ASVOFF Festival Sets New Dates and Venue for 10th Anniversary

CHANGE OF SCENERY: The annual fashion-centric short film festival “A Shaded View on Fashion Film” has found a new venue for its 10th anniversary edition after Pierre Cardin withdrew from the event.
Originally set to take place from Sept. 7 to 9 at the 96-year-old designer’s Palais Bulles, located in the French city of Théoule-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean coast, the festival has been rescheduled for Oct. 12 to 14 at the Club de l’Etoile near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, organizers said, without proving additional details.
The jury, to be headed by Spanish actress Rossy de Palma, will include Rick Owens and his wife and muse Michèle Lamy; Jean Paul Gaultier; costume designer Eric Daman; Pamela Golbin, chief curator of fashion and textiles at Les Arts Décoratifs; artist Orlan, and film critic Elisabeth Quin, among others.
Founded in 2006 as “You Wear It Well,” the festival was renamed “A Shaded View on Fashion Film” in 2008 when it moved to Paris, to match the “A Shaded View on Fashion”  blog created by Diane Pernet, a blogger and multihyphenate industry insider.
The three-day program will feature more than 80 films, including a collaboration with the film school École de la Cité and Casa 93, a

Christian Siriano to Discuss His Career, 10th Anniversary With Fern Mallis at 92Y

HAVE A SEAT: With a new multistory Midtown address and store, Christian Siriano has never been more ensconced in New York City. And on June 12 at 92Y, the youngest winner of “Project Runway” will be detailing how his career fast-forwarded over the past 10 years.
Siriano will be looking back (and forward) with Fern Mallis in one of her “Fashion Icons” Q&As. Along with a celebrity client list that has included Leslie Jones, Debra Messing, Scarlett Johansson and Lady Gaga, the designer has his own loyal fan base that was jump-started by his “Project Runway” win. Of course, that was one of several influential launching pads. Siriano had runs at Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. Earlier this week he opened The Curated NYC, a multibrand store at 5 West 54th Street, in a 1918 neo-Renaissance style townhouse that at one-time housed Fabergé’s headquarters as well as Cary Grant’s office.
Explaining the concept to WWD, Siriano said, “I really wanted to create a mini-department store. If you come in to shop for a beautiful Christian Siriano dress, what else can go with it that looks amazing? I don’t do jewelry so I wanted to partner with great jewelry brands, I don’t do

A Look Back At Fall Out Boy’s ‘Thnks Fr Th Mmrs’ On Its 10th Anniversary

Ten years ago, Fall Out Boy were at the height of their fame, but they weren’t really sure how they felt about it.

Following up their 2005 breakthrough album, “From Under The Cork Tree,” the band released “Infinity on High,” ― a record that was largely dedicated to their first interactions with fame ― in February 2007.

“FUCT” had sold 3 million copies and produced two of the catchiest, radio-friendly rock singles of the mid-aughts; “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Dance, Dance.” In a few short years the band, comprising singer Patrick Stump, guitarist Joe Trohman, drummer Andy Hurley and bassist, lyricist and de facto frontman Pete Wentz, had gone from sleeping on strangers’ floors to headlining arena tours.

And Wentz ― one of the few male celebrities to endure a nude photo leak ― embraced his newfound fame as rumors he was romancing Michelle Trachtenberg, Lindsay Lohan and Ashlee Simpson swirled, while his clothing line and record label, among other business ventures, helped the band earn the nickname “Sell Out Boy.”

“Rock guys are like, ‘Fuck, I don’t want to do stuff like that.’ But look at the state of rock music. Bands can’t sell fucking records. The new rock stars are dudes like Jay-Z,” he told Rolling Stone in 2006, adding that he wanted Fall Out Boy to be “a culture. You’re going to eat, sleep and breathe it. I want it to be a way you think about the world.”

A year later he told the magazine, “I want to be the biggest band on the planet.”

Those statements are at odds with many of the lyrics on “Infinity on High,” which is a largely a meditation on the perils of fame. It’s also why Def Jam president Jay Z is the first voice you hear on the album’s first track, “Thriller.”

We dedicate this album to anybody people said couldn’t make it. To the fans that held us down till everybody came around, welcome. It’s here.

It’s also a reminder of just how the band had come.

Monday marks 10 years since Fall Out Boy released the album’s third single, “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” and, like the video for the their previous single “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race,” it touched on the absurdities of fame. This time around, it showed the band filming a video while being directed by a chimpanzee.

While the song itself is mostly about a broken relationship, it also alluded to the Hollywood starlets to whom Wentz was romantically linked, as in lyrics like, “They say I only think in the form of crunching numbers / In hotel rooms collecting Page Six lovers.”

Ironically, the video co-starred Kim Kardashian as Wentz’s love interest. At the time, Kardashian was just starting to earn her own headlines in Page Six. She was then best known as Paris Hilton’s friend. Her sex tape leaked just a month before FOB’s video dropped.

“I’m a fan of Fall Out Boy and I agreed to do it,” Kardashian told Newstimes in 2007. “And it was so much fun working with them. … I think music videos kind of all show the same thing. They kind of want a hot girl and cool cars. This one was totally different.”

The band couldn’t have known that Kardashian would go on to become the reigning tabloid queen, but Wentz quickly became a tabloid fixture as soon as he revealed he was dating Ashlee Simpson, whom he’d been linked to since 2006.

The band’s success and Wentz’s love life weighed on the band. Their next album, “Folie a Deux,” focused on themes similar to their last.

“Rock stars have been making records about rock stardom for decades, but few have had such fun singing about the absurdities, the narcissism — and, as the album title suggests, the follies — of a life lived in fame’s strobelit glare,” Rolling Stone’s Jody Rosen wrote in a review of the 2008 album.

When the band announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus in November 2009, Wentz told Kerrang! that he felt his high-profile relationship with Simpson and his personal life had become a “hindrance for the band.”

“I think the world needs a little less Pete Wentz. A lot of people think Fall Out Boy is me. But it’s the four of us. I want to fucking vomit when I read intros that say, ‘Pete Wentz: accidental internet poster boy.’ It makes me feel ugly,” the band’s frontman explained at the time.

The band’s hiatus lasted three years. Fall Out Boy has since released two albums. When the 10th anniversary of “Infinity on High” rolled around last month, Wentz reflected on the album in a short blog post on the band’s website:

this one was strange. it was transitional. If FUCT was the caterpillar album- Infinity On High was the cocoon one. we had been on tour around the world nonstop but hadn’t really seen any of the magazine covers we were on or had any perspective of seeing our videos on TRL- it was odd how everything was changing but it felt like we were in a time capsule… this record would bring so many ideas from jay z doing the intro to working with baby face on “thnks fr th mmrs” to the flight 101 saga (3 shows in a day in ny, chicago, and la)… but first and foremost it documented this blur that had become our lives. this record more than any of the others has always reminded me of night time- both the anxiety of insomnia and the peace of being awake when everyone else is asleep. i remember before we released it i used like a security blanket listening and trying to fall asleep. i really appreciate everyone who gave this one a chance.

“Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all.” vincent van gogh

Apollo Theater Celebrates Its Rich Legacy With 10th Annual Spring Gala

Monday night marked the 10th anniversary of the Apollo Theater’s annual Spring Gala, which was met with much fanfare.

The event, which featured a celebratory benefit concert, was hosted by Extra TV correspondent AJ Calloway and featured star-studded performances from Nile Rodgers and his pioneering disco-funk group Chic, Ne-Yo, Luke James, Rosanne Cash, “The Voice” season 8 contestant Kimberly Nichole and South African a capella trio The Soil.

During his opening monologue, Calloway shared some of his personal experiences and memories of the Apollo.

“I used to sneak into the Apollo when I was in high school,” Calloway said. “I was in [New] Jersey, my parents didn’t know I was here, but I used to watch Amateur Night so I’m very happy to be on this stage. And I started my career here. The first time I was on this stage was ‘106 & Park’ and that was 15 years ago. So I’m really, really happy to be here.”

In addition to Calloway’s return to the Apollo stage, the event also served as a homecoming for Rodgers, who landed his second professional gig performing with the theater’s house band. Prior to taking to the stage to perform a medley of Chic’s biggest hits, Rodgers opened up to The Huffington Post about the significance of headlining this year’s annual gala.

“When I played here I was 19-years-old,” Rodgers said. “I had just finished a year with ‘Sesame Street,’ which was my first professional job. And I was just telling the band how it was the first time I walked out onto this stage. It’s amazing for me to be here now, all these years later playing my own music, which is crazy.”

For Apollo Theater President & CEO, Jonelle Procope the Gala has served as an important part in the theater’s growth for the past 10 years.

“Although the Apollo is now in its 81st year, we have only been a nonprofit since 1991 and I would say it has really been over the last 10 years that the institution has experienced tremendous growth as a nonprofit with expanded artistic, educational and community programs,” Procope said to the Huffington Post.

“The Gala, which is one of our largest fundraisers, has provided crucial support toward those initiatives. It also allows us to celebrate and honor the Apollo’s rich legacy as the musical home for so many legendary artists like Nile Rodgers and the opportunity to continue that legacy as an important springboard for the next generation of artists.”

The benefit, which raises funds for the theater’s education and community outreach programs, also honored James Dolan, President and CEO of Cablevision Systems Corporation and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, who accepted the Corporate Award on behalf of The Madison Square Garden Company, and Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, who accepted the Percy C. Sutton Civic Leadership Award on behalf of The Ford Foundation.

The Empire State Building Goes Green For HuffPost’s 10th Birthday

The Huffington Post is celebrating 10 years in style.

On Thursday night, New York City’s iconic Empire State Building turned its lights “HuffPost green” in honor of The Huffington Post’s 10th birthday.

HuffPost’s co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington did the ceremonial honors by pulling the light switch, turning the building green for the night.

The Empire State Building is one of the most-photographed buildings in the world, but you’ve probably never seen it like this. Getting up close and personal with the (temporarily) green giant takes going into a helicopter. It’s even more majestic from above:
