Kim Kardashian Used Healing Crystals to Recover From 2016 Paris Robbery

Kim Kardashian is diving further into the beauty world, launching three eau de parfums at her online beauty destination, kkwfragrance.com, on Nov. 15. The three variations on gardenia, her favorite flower and scent, are first come, first serve fragrances. Once they’re gone, that’s it.
In an exclusive interview with WWD, Kardashian outlined the process of creating and launching her three fragrances, Crystal Gardenia, Crystal Gardenia Citrus and Crystal Gardenia Oud, including the inspiration behind them.
“Honestly, after my Paris situation [when she was held at gunpoint and robbed], a lot of my friends would come over and bring me healing crystals, and I obviously knew what they were — it’s very L.A. and it’s very popular right now — but for me it meant something so different. I was sitting there and I’d get these collections of them and I started to really dig deeper into what they meant and the meanings behind them and started to go to these crystal warehouses in Culver City and downtown [L.A.],” said Kardashian.
Developing each scent was about “being calm and healing,” which are the two words Kardashian used to describe a newly zen approach she’s taken over the past year. The color variations of each

Owner of Oakland Warehouse Loft Arrested in Connection with 2016 Fire that Killed 36

California police have arrested the owner of an Oakland artist’s loft where 36 partygoers died last year in a deadly fire during a rave, PEOPLE confirms.

Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 47-year-old Derick Almena — the owner of the “Ghost Ship” loft space in a warehouse — on Monday in Lake County, a Lake County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman tells PEOPLE. Almena has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fire, jail records show.

Max Harris was also arrested in connection with the fire, ABC 7 reports. Harris served as the Ghost Ship’s creative director, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Almena’s attorneys Jeffrey Krasnoff, Kyndra Miller and J. Tony Serra did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE. However, the trio has released a statement regarding the incident, CBS reports.

“We intend to vigorously defend him in the court of the law,” the statement reads. “We believe that these charges represent no less than a miscarriage of justice, and we are confident that this attempt to make a scapegoat out of our client will fail.”

Officials Say at Least 36 Dead After Fire Breaks Out During Warehouse Rave in Oakland

Almena is expected to be arraigned on Thursday. It is unclear whether the men have entered pleas and whether Harris has retained an attorney.

Both men are expected to face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter, according to The Mercury News.

The fire broke out during a rave at the warehouse on the night of Dec. 2. Police spent days searching for missing partygoers who would later be found dead.

Approximately 100 people attended the event, which featured a performance from Madison, Wisconsin-based electronic act Golden Donna. A Facebook page for the party at the time noted that attendees could get their hair and nails done at a “secret East Oakland location,” which was announced the day of the show.

Although investigators with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have determined the cause of the fire, their findings have not been made public, the Times reports.

Then-President Barack Obama spoke out about the tragedy, as authorities were still working to find the victims.

“Today our prayers go out to the people of Oakland, California, in the aftermath of this weekend’s deadly warehouse fire – one of the worst fires in the state’s history,” he said in a statement.

“While we still don’t know the full toll of this disaster, we do know that an American community has been devastated, and many people – including young men and women with their whole futures ahead of them – have tragically lost their lives.”

The Ghost Ship — a DIY venue — operated inside a warehouse building that was reportedly used by artists as studios and living spaces.

“Habitability” complaints had been made about the building to owner of the entire warehouse space — not Almena, who only owns the loft — with one complaint filed in the month before the fire, according to the East Bay Express.

Former employees initially pointed the finger at the owner, telling KGO that Almena laughed off warnings from police and fire officials about the building’s fire hazard.

Ivanka Trump’s Clothing Sales Increased In 2016

Perhaps Ivanka Trump didn’t need that glowing endorsement from Kellyanne Conway to help boost profits.

Trump’s businesses are mentioned virtually every time she is, and those mentions came fast and furious over the past year she helped her father become president. There were also headlines over boycotts of Trump products, stores that dropped her lines, accusations of copying designs, retweets from the official White House Twitter account and the hypocrisy of importing goods made in China as her father insisted he’d rebuild the country with American labor

It all combined for a hefty increase in sales in 2016.

G-III Apparel Group, Ltd., which licenses Trump’s clothing collection (her shoe line is licensed through Marc Fisher), reported a “$ 17.9 million increase in net sales of Ivanka Trump licensed products” for the year ending January 31. The company credits the brand with helping bring up its gross profits as a whole, according to a new annual report released April 3.

There were observed drops in sales over the period ― at Nordstrom, for example ― and while sales of G-III-licensed merchandise continued to increase, they did so at a significantly slower pace. Forbes reported the brand did $ 100 million in revenue with G-III during the 2015 fiscal year, when it saw net sales increase by $ 24.9 million over 2014.

Trump’s brand declined to comment, and G-III did not return a request for comment by the time of publication. A spokesperson did tell Refinery 29 off-record Monday that “while Ivanka Trump might have been one of its faster growing brands last year, it is not one of the larger brands that the company operates.” The Calvin Klein label, for example, saw twice as much growth for G-III, garnering an increase in sales of $ 43.7 million.

The news adds fuel to the fire engulfing the Trump family’s numerous conflicts of interest. While Trump announced she was stepping down from her company in January and prohibited the brand from using her likeness in March, she still receives financial reports and profits from the company, even after becoming an official White House employee. An ethics expert told The Huffington Post last month that the only way Trump can truly avoid a conflict of interest is to sell the company or decline a job in the White House.

The only things that seem certain is that Trump’s brand, like her position in the White House, will continue to be a point of contention during her father’s presidency ― and that any publicity really is good publicity.

Ermenegildo Zegna Profitability, Sales Dented in 2016; CEO Sees Growth in 2017

MILAN — Putting 2016 down as “a transitional” year, Gildo Zegna, chief executive officer of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group, is banking on a new brand strategy, the company’s newly reorganized structure and a rebound in China and Europe to boost business in 2017.
“I am confident we will grow again this year; we started off on the right foot,” said Zegna in a phone interview ahead of boarding a plane for Dubai to join artistic director Alessandro Sartori on a number of personal appearances in the region. “One-on-one relations are fundamental, Alex is almost like a personal stylist in some cases,” said Zegna.
While 2017 looks promising, results last year were hit by extraordinary costs and write-offs, as well as lackluster sales in the group’s main markets.
In 2016, Zegna’s net profit fell 55.5 percent to 20 million euros, or $ 22 million, from 45 million euros, or $ 49.9 million, in 2015.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization dropped 14.3 percent to 125 million euros, or $ 137.5 million, from 146 million euros, or $ 162 million, the previous year.
Revenues decreased 8.2 percent to 1.15 billion euros, or $ 1.26 billion, compared with 1.26 billion euros, or $ 1.4 billion, in 2015. At constant exchange, sales were down

We’re Already Getting A Miniseries About The 2016 Election

We are 26 days into Donald Trump’s presidency, and there’s already a miniseries about the 2016 election on the horizon.

That’s right, you can soon channel your crippling panic about America’s federal horror show via an eight- to 10-hour drama from “Zero Dark Thirty” scribe Mark Boal and producer Megan Ellison, according to Deadline. Boal, who won an Oscar for writing “The Hurt Locker,” is expected to make his directorial debut and pen part of the series.

Boal and Ellison will work with Hugo Lindgren, the former New York Times and Hollywood Reporter editor who in 2014 launched Page 1, a company that develops movies and TV series based on recent news stories. Lindgren is reportedly compiling a team of investigative journalists in New York and Washington, D.C., to work on the project.

Whether or not a few months provides enough distance to process the nutty election we just endured is yet to be seen. It seems like this endeavor most closely resembles Game Change, the meticulously reported behind-the-scenes account of the 2008 election. Game Change started as a 2010 book and became an Emmy-winning HBO movie in 2012.

There’s no network attached to Boal and Ellison’s series yet. Showtime has already contributed to the election postmortem with “Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time,” a documentary that aired Feb. 3. PBS also dedicated a January episode of “Frontline” to chronicling how the hell Trump made it all the way to the White House. It’s almost like the whole thing is so dreadful that no one can think of anything else! Fire up your Hillary Clinton casting wish list now.

These 16 Great Videos Remind Us What It Meant To Be LGBTQ In 2016

2016 will be remembered as a particularly challenging year for many people, including those in the LGBTQ community.

The June 12 Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida and the controversy surrounding transgender “bathroom bills” in states like North Carolina left many queer people feeling vulnerable. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s surprise election victory in November cast a grim shadow on the future of LGBTQ rights after a series of progressive strides under President Barack Obama

The year’s uncertainty was, of course, reflected on countless social media outlets. These 16 incredible videos ― which made a splash on Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets over the past year ― represent 12 months of LGBTQ trials and tribulations, as well as the community’s cheeky sense of humor.

A few same-sex couples gave us life (and fitness) goals by organizing heartfelt proposals at the gym. An iconic “Mean Girls” scene got a hilarious, all-male redux in support of Hillary Clinton, and the bisexual community got the rock anthem it didn’t know it needed. LGBTQ allies got in on the fun, too: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Justin Bieber and Judy Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft, helped us mourn the 49 Orlando victims in poignant ways.

Take a look back at 2016 with these 16 great videos.

The fashion industry is still working its way to real size inclusivity, but it undoubtedly played a major role in shifting toward more body positivity in the media ― and among those who consume it.

In 2016, there were champions of body positivity starring in major campaigns and magazine covers and wearing store-bought awards show dresses instead of conforming to strict sample sizes.

Because we could all use a reminder of some of the good things that happened this year, check out 11 body positive moments in fashion below.

1. Ashley Graham’s history-making Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

Graham’s February cover marked the first time a plus-size model headlined the hotly anticipated Swimsuit Issue, leading the way for her incredibly fruitful year ahead.

2. Bryce Dallas Howard calls out the industry for its lack of options.

Howard revealed in January that she often buys her own dresses at department stores instead of borrowing from sample-size-loving designers, so that she can choose from “lots of options for a size 6, as opposed to maybe one option.” She both won the hearts of women everywhere and pointed out how truly size-exclusive fashion can be.

3. Christian Siriano’s Spring 2017 runway show.

The designer is a longtime advocate of inclusivity and champion of great style for women of all shapes and sizes. He further proved that there’s a place for varied bodies on the runway when he cast five plus-size models in his show at New York Fashion Week.

4. The All Woman Project.

Co-founded by models Clementine Desseaux and Charli Howard, this empowering campaign was organized to shake up the industry standards of beauty and offer up new role models for underrepresented women.

5. Jasmine Tookes’ unretouched Fantasy Bra photos.

The news that Tookes is the third black woman ever chosen to wear the elaborate bra was cause for celebration, but this behind-the-scenes image released by the brand, proudly featuring the model’s stretch marks, was the icing on the body positive cake.

6. Refinery29’s 67% Project.

Today's #InstagramStories wants you to #SeeThe67 Photographed by @alexandra_gavillet

A photo posted by Refinery29 (@refinery29) on

Refinery29 launched an initiative back in September to more accurately represent the “67 percent of women who identify as ‘plus-size’” in its online content. It partnered with Getty Images to roll out a series of inclusive stock images and committed to featuring more diversity on the site moving forward.

7. Self Magazine’s final print issue.

Self cast self-love champion and curvy model Iskra Lawrence as its final cover star, leaving a lasting visual message and reminder that health is not one-size-fits-all.

8. This awe-inspiring take on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

This video, in which women of all shapes and sizes stripped down to their underwear and recreated the VS show in front of friends and colleagues, was super empowering ― plus it just looked plain fun.

9. These Women’s Running magazine covers.

The running-focused magazine continued its streak of delighting us when it put a plus-size model on its March cover, and further impressed us by teaming up in November with plus-size model Candice Huffine on Project Start, a running initiative launched by the model and the mag to help beginners get started on their own running programs.

10. Tim Gunn’s scathing op-ed about the fashion industry.

Leave it to Tim Gunn to rally for body positivity while throwing the best shade at the same time. Calling out the industry for its lack of choices for women over a certain size, Gunn once again cemented his status as a champion of all women in the pages of The Washington Post. “I profoundly believe that women of every size can look good. But they must be given choices,” he said, calling out designers as “not interested” in catering to women over a certain size. “This is a design failure and not a customer issue. There is no reason larger women can’t look just as fabulous as all other women,” he said.

11. Ashley Graham’s British Vogue cover.

Ashley Graham both kicks off and signs off this list, as there’s no denying her impact in fashion in 2016. She nabbed a ton of covers throughout the year, but became the first plus-size model to cover British Vogue in December, giving us hope for the year ahead and beyond.

Someone Literally Turned 2016 Into A Horror Movie

Everyone’s been saying it: 2016 was one traumatic year.

It’s the year we lost David Bowie, Harper Lee, Prince, and Princess Leia and her mother. It’s the year the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. It’s the year Donald Trump was voted president of the United States. It’s the year Harambe was shot.

These past 12 months have played out like a surreal horror film ― so Friend Dog Studios turned the year into one, in the form of a fake movie trailer.

The comedy studio premiered the trailer Wednesday for “2016: The Movie,” and it hits way too close to home.

The trailer’s story touches all the shitty things that happened this year, including notable deaths, exploding phones and Trump’s “locker room talk” defense.

If there’s anything this movie trailer does, it confirms that we’re not just going crazy: This year felt bad universally.

And whatever you do, don’t trust the boyfriend in the video above when he says, “It’s OK. It’s not like it could get any worse.”

These 15 Viral Beauty Tricks Made 2016 Even Weirder

Yes, 2016 was weird. And it had the beauty trends to match. Luckily, nothing lasts forever, even if those 100 coats of nail polish videos felt like they might.

As the year comes to an end, there’s no better time to revisit the trends that inspired a whole lot of head scratching, wonderment and just as many YouTube tutorials.

Check them out below and stay weird, beauty lovers.

1. Succulent nails

Because the only thing more painfully hip than nail art is succulent nail art.

2. KFC’s chicken-flavored nail polish.

Edible, chicken-flavored and oh so weird.

3. The V-Steam.

This Gwyneth Paltrow-approved treatment involves a tube that blows hot steam onto your vagina that allegedly “balances female hormone levels” (dubious). We’re not so sure about paying upward of $ 50 to give our vaginas steam “facials,” but who are we to judge!

4. Hologram lips.

OK, this one, that requires just one $ 14 lip gloss, is just as cool as it is weird.

5. Lisa Frank hair.

Because rainbows make everyone smile. #lyssdidmyhair #rainbowhair #hairvideo #allthecolors #lisafrankhair

A video posted by Connecticut Hairstylist (@lysseon) on

The Lisa Frank obsession this year prompted a clothing line, coloring books and this mesmerizing, psychedelic trend in hair dye. Rainbow hair isn’t necessarily weird, but the fact that it’s inspired by 90s-era school stationary is a little unusual.

6. Crystal lips

They’re made using “heavy glitter, base color and clear gloss” and they are so intense.

7. 100 layers videos.

Starting with “polish mountain,” beauty vloggers spent hours of their lives in 2016 demonstrating what 100 layers of mascara, foundation and liquid lipstick look like (to name a few). Jenna Marbles took it about 500 steps further when she did them all, plus hairspray and false lashes, because why not?

8. The edible chocolate manicure

OK, this mani made with icing may have been a joke, but that didn’t make it any less weird (or fun to watch).

9. Nutella hair dye.

As if we needed another reason to idolize Nutella: it allegedly lightens hair (we are highly skeptical) in addition to being the most delightful snack on the planet. Have we mentioned we’re skeptical? Of course, pretending to use Nutella as a hair dye would be pretty weird too.

10. Cheeto Curls

YouTuber Grav3yardgirl actually achieved some enviable ringlets from wrapping her hair in puffy Cheetos, but we’d still advise against trying this one at home.

11. Penis-imprinted highlighters.

Makeup brand Bitch Slap Cosmetics crafted these genitalia-themed highlighters that no one ever asked for.

12. Neck contouring.

So… Will this be a new trend? What do you guys think? #neckcontour ( @mwhairstyles) #fdbeauty

A video posted by Female Daily Network (@femaledailynetwork) on

Maybe useful for a red carpet you’re planning to walk down backward? Otherwise, this one just seems difficult to maneuver and a waste of time.

13. Boob masks.

You know those sheet masks you put on your face? Well, these are those but for boobs. They even have nipple cutouts. Reminder: Your boobs are perfect the way they are, sheet mask or otherwise.

14. Glow-in-the-dark hair.

Celebrity hairstylist Guy Tang created this high-octane dye job that legit glows in the dark. Black lights have never been more needed.

15. Vagasil as a primer.

Vagisil treats yeast infections, sure, but its ingredients do wonders for filling in your fine lines and acting as a great base for makeup, according to a bunch of beauty bloggers.

Gay Podcasters Pick Their Top Entertainment of 2016

If you’ve been feeling down in the dumps about 2016, now’s a good time to take a deep breath and remember that it’s actually been a great year to enjoy some amazing art and culture. As bad as 2016 got, we had some amazing music and film and television to get us through it all — and it’s looking like 2017 could be even more artistically fertile.

Every week on my podcast The Sewers of Paris, I talk to gay men about entertainment that changed their lives. And for a special year-in-review episode, I asked some of my favorite gay podcasters what they loved this year. From Savage Lovecast’s Dan Savage to Feast of Fun’s Marc Felion they provided some fantastic recommendations for things you might have missed over this past year.

You can listen to the full episode featuring everyone’s recommendations at SewersOfParis.com. And I’ve rounded up a few highlights below.

Dan Savage chose Moonlight as his top pick. “Sitting there with my own gay white male biases and expectations,” he said, “I was forced to confront my own privilege and bias and expectations.”

Dave White and Alonso Duralde of Linoleum Knife had some movies to suggest: Dave liked Cemetery of Splendor, while Alonso liked Take me to the River. One is a story of soldiers who literally sleep through the horrors of war; and the other is a story of family secrets. Both are haunting.

From the Risk podcast, Kevin Allison loved this season of Game of Thrones for the escapism — and also showing him that a part of him relishes a revenge story.

From the podcast Bad Gay Movies, Bitchy Gay Men, Bil Antoniou chose Isabelle Huppert in Elle, and Daniel Krolik liked Season 2 of Difficult People. Daniel loved that the show portrays some realities of gay dating. “I think it’s the most truthful depiction of what it is for a gay man to be single,” he said.

Ryan O’Connor of the Ladywatch podcast had trouble choosing: he loved Lemonade, and also the movie Jackie, and also Sally Field in My Name is Doris.

But maybe Cody Melcher of Tomefoolery had the most surprising recommendation. In addition to watching a lot of British panel shows, he’s been catching up on Reba, the sitcom from the ‘90s. That’s because the show is comfort food for him, after a year that was particularly difficult. “I’ve been having a rough one since March,” he said. He had a breakup this year, and Reba felt more timely than ever — it’s about a woman who goes through a divorce and isn’t interested in diving back into dating. It’s about taking care of yourself. And in 2017, self-care is going to be more important than ever.

Get more recommendations and watch more clips from the Best of 2016 episode at SewersOfParis.com.

Harambe and ‘Damn Daniel’ Among The Memes That Won The Internet In 2016

2016 has widely been considered a tough year. But not all of 2016 was a downer. The Internet, as it often does, has provided plenty of hilarity in the form of viral memes to lighten things up.

We took a look at Google’s 2016 search trends and found the top 10 most sought-after memes of the year. From Harambe memes to the angry Michael Phelps face, these Internet creations will go down in online history as classics.

1. Harambe

When Harambe the gorilla was shot in order to protect a small child who had wandered into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, public outrage ensued. The Internet, however, had other plans for Harambe, and used the incident as the basis for a series of viral memes that were hard to miss on social media, making Harambe the top trending meme of the year.

It’s no surprise that a meme making light of an animal’s death caused quite a bit of controversy, especially with the Cincinnati Zoo. The zoo deleted its social media accounts amidst a barrage of Harambe memes. During the 2016 presidential election, people even joked that they voted for Harambe as a candidate.

2. Damn Daniel

The “Damn Daniel” trend all started with a viral tweet, which featured a video of teenager Daniel Lara in his white Vans sneakers. Throughout the clip, Lara’s friend comments on his shoes, saying “damn Daniel.” You have to watch it to truly understand why this is Internet gold, and the second top trending meme of the year

3. Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go is not only the top Google search of 2016, it is also the third most viral meme of the year. With the game’s U.S. release on July 6, it makes sense that only a few weeks later, the Internet had already gone to work creating memes.

4. Dat Boi

It’s difficult to trace the origin of “Dat Boi,” the meme featuring an animated frog on a unicycle, but several sources believe it was inspired by an older meme on Tumblr from 2015. While pinpointing the source for its popularity is tricky, “Dat Boi” skyrocketed to viral fame in May 2016, when the vast majority of the “Dat Boi” memes were created.

Adding even more humor to this meme, it appears the image may have come from a physics textbook, according to this Twitter user’s discovery:

5. SpongeBob Caveman

Perhaps one of the most visually hilarious meme trends of the year was SpongeBob Caveman, also known as Primitive Sponge. For any SpongeBob SquarePants fans out there, you’ll likely remember the 1999 caveman episode that created the magical creature that is SpongeGar. Fast forward to May 2016, when a Reddit user decided to bring back SpongeGar, sparking the viral meme trend that is now known as SpongeBob Caveman. This timing explains why a spike in Google searches for the meme started in late May.

6. Michael Phelps

If you watched the Rio Olympics, you’re likely familiar with the angry Michael Phelps meme. When the camera featured Phelps’ face in the holding room, as he was listening to music and preparing for his 200m butterfly semifinal, the Internet immediately moved to meme-ify the moment.

What resulted from this unintentional death stare was a series of memes that we are certainly not going to forget anytime soon.

7. Donald Trump

The Donald Trump memes started trending during the first presidential debate in September, and saw its biggest spike in Google searches in early November, when the election took place. Largely created as a response against Trump’s policies and statements, this meme trend was met with controversy from Trump supporters.

8. “Making A Murderer”

The Netflix original documentary “Making A Murderer” left many viewers convinced that Steven Avery was framed and innocent. This inspired a series of comedic memes in his support. Google searches for the memes spiked around mid-January, about a month after the show premiered on December 18.

9. Ken Bone

During the second U.S. presidential debate on September 29, undecided voters had the chance to ask candidates their questions directly. Ken Bone inquired about the candidates’ energy policies, and immediately became an Internet sensation.

The memes started rolling out within the next few days, causing a spike in Google searches.

10. Birdman

During an appearance on the radio show “The Breakfast Club,” rapper Birdman went on a rant and abruptly walked off the show, thus sparking yet another viral meme trend. The first to poke fun at the awkward interview was an Instagram user who uploaded an edited version of the video, with Michael Jordan’s crying face over Birdman’s:

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Top Ten Films of 2016

It’s one critic’s opinion. Let’s save the fighting for the future of our democracy. And let’s hope for streaming video for the titles at the bottom.

1. Newtown
Kim Snyder’s emotionally devastating one year followup on the survivors of the horrific shooting of schoolchildren in Newtown, Connecticut avoids explicit violence and manipulative sequences. Instead, she shows how irreparably damaged parents and siblings of those lost are, and condemns this nation rightfully for its refusal to enact any gun control. A transcendent doc that earns it tears fairly.

2. Miss Sloane
Screenwriter Jonathan Perera was living in Asia, unrepresented, before this literate, constantly surprising project got in the hands of director John Madden and Jessica Chastain, playing a brilliant, ruthless Washington lobbyist who sacrifices her career while trying to enact, yes, once again, gun control legislation. Reminiscent of Michael Clayton with its finely etched characters.

3. Weiner
Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg had no idea that Congressman Anthony Weiner was going to witness a major scandal that would melt down his career while on camera. His brilliance, passion and humor are put in sharp relief by his compulsive, self-destructive behavior. A squirm-inducing, miraculous film.

4. Zero Days
Prolific, multi-award winner Alex Gibney has created a documentary about our greatest and most overlooked threat to the planet, the hacking of our critical infrastructure. It plays out like an international thriller, involving the US and Israel secretly cyber-attacking Iranian nuclear power centrifuges, but when Israel launched a second attack, the code was discovered and has now spread worldwide. Chilling and of the utmost importance.

5. Tower
Keith Maitland expands the nature of documentary with a primarily rotoscoped visit back to the sniper who took 16 lives from a clock tower on the University of Texas, Austin campus in 1966. There are fascinating shifts in perspective and storytelling by Maitland, as well as recalling inspiring acts of personal bravery.

6. Remember
Atom Egoyan returns to top directorial form, as the impeccable Christopher Plummer plays a senior citizen with dementia, on a personal mission to murder the Nazi guard who killed his family, recently found in America. Martin Landau supports with excellent work in this taut, finely constructed and moving feature.

7. Hell or High Water
Scotsman David Mackenzie and his screenwriter, David Sheridan, nail the quirks and mannerisms of West Texas, as two bank-robbing brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) try to save their ranch. They’re up against Jeff Bridges, as a charmingly laid back but brilliant lawman unwilling to give up on apprehending them. Foster is yet again a revelation as actor.

8. Neruda
Director Pablo Larrain has a beautifully shot and poetic tale in this, the persecution of Nobel Prize winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, hunted down by an inspector (Gael Garcia Bernal) who admires his work. A luxurious, metaphysical chase thriller, nominated for the Golden Globe for Foreign Film.

9. The Infiltrator
By now, we all know Bryan Cranston can do anything and here he rejuvenates the undercover thriller. Director Brad Furman has plenty of nail-biting tension and respect for his Columbian cartel characters as well, especially with Benjamin Bratt as an associate of kingpin Pablo Escobar. Based on the nonfiction book by US Customs agent Robert Mazur.

10. The Girl on the Train
It’s a delight to see how far Emily Blunt has come, from comedic second banana to this wrenching portrayal of an alcoholic who might be a murderer. Tate Taylor’s adaptation of the best seller by Paula Hawkins not only keeps you guessing but is lensed with great precision and color.

Great Films, No Theatrical Distribution:

Asperger’s Are Us, Blue Jay, Borderline, My King (Mon Roi), Sensitivity Training.

One Tear-Jerking Last Look At Michelle Obama’s Best Outfits Of 2016

We spent a large part of 2016 celebrating Michelle Obama’s legacy and trying our best to ignore the imminent end of her tenure as first lady. She has done a great deal to help distract us from the latter, blessing the masses with arguably her best dressed year yet.

Sure, FLOTUS has had too many incredible style moments to count over the past eight years, but she really turned it out for the farewell tour. This rose gold Atelier Versace moment serves as proof.

Nothing can prepare us for the dark day looming in the distance when she passes along her title and the slew of best-dressed opportunities that come with itto the incoming first lady. But as they say, it’s better to smile because it happened than to cry because it’s over.

It’s in that spirit that we present 11 of Michelle’s best looks of 2016, which we intend to scroll up and down over and over again for the remainder of this year.

I’m Tired Of Hearing How Bad 2016 Was

How was your year?

Whenever I get on Facebook these days I see an insane amount of bellyaching and newsfeed shitposting that’s quite frankly got me tired as hell.

Yeah, Mr. Trump is our President-elect, and yeah, the election had us on a figurative roller coaster that got worse and worse as the year went on.

However, despite all this insanity that kept happening around me (and the fact that I literally heard Donald Trump’s name 10 times per day), I had the best year of my life.

Turns out it’s actually pretty easy to have a great time despite what’s going on around us. Now, I don’t mean to say we should ignore what’s happening in the political sphere, but we shouldn’t let it decide whether we have a good year or a bad one.

I remember I met an English guy in Austin right around the time Brexit was happening. When it did happen he was pretty devastated–even though I could tell he was holding back from showing it a bit.

The crazy thing is we drove six hours that day to a beautiful spot up in Tucson, catching the sunset in a place called Sabino Canyon. I could post pictures, (which I will) but trust me when I say these images will never give you the same feeling I felt standing there in real time.

Arizona. #travelblog #digitalnomad #outhere #sabinocanyon

A photo posted by Tom Kuegler (@tomkuegler) on

Oddly enough I never heard one more word about Brexit the entire time we were together. Granted, we were only with each other for a few days after that, but come on–nothing??

The next day we saw Sedona in upstate Arizona, both absolutely fascinated by these beautiful red rocks jutting out of the desert. You should’ve seen our jaws on the drive up there.

The point is there’s more important things in life.

Now, how the hell could I say something like that about something like government?

I honestly think political issues get so blown out of proportion by the media (hypocritical, I know) that we lose track of the things that hold us together.

These issues are important to talk about, however are they more important than treating our fellow man with some iota of respect? Or standing in awe of this sophisticated planet we inhabit?

I mean, we aren’t the only beings that live here–and I get it, government can help (or not help) make this amazing world a better place. But I think often times we get so caught up in the fighting and shitposting that we forget about what we’re actually here to do, or what we’ve come to save.

There’s nothing like sitting at the end of the world while watching a sunset to bring you back to this realization. It definitely grounds you a bit.

As a side note, sometimes all we want to do is be heard. I try to hear everybody even if I disagree.

I had a wonderful 2016. I watched the first presidential debate in Bozeman, Montana. I watched the second one in Salt Lake City. I watched the last one in Denver.

I spent two and a half months with my best friend in San Francisco and met so many other people that made my year fantastic.

San Francisco, I'm officially and undoubtedly deeply in love with you. #travelblog #laborday #itiswhatitis

A photo posted by Tom Kuegler (@tomkuegler) on

I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I believe I had a great year because I spent it in awe of this country (and world), while simultaneously trying to spend more time with the people that mean a lot to me.

And yes, the political situation this year had me down on a multitude of occasions, but I chose to focus on other things. I saw the beauty of this country (and this country’s people) while working on finding myself as a 23-year-old caught up in the world.

So, before we keep talking about the shitty year that we had, let’s take a look around us! The people and places that surround us are what we’re really here for. We can find the light in any situation. I hope we can all find it from here on out, wherever we go or whatever happens.

12 Of The Most Shocking Entertainment Stories Of 2016

Over the past 12 months, the world has thrown some pretty hard punches our way, often leaving us all in a state of shock or disbelief.

In January, we lost music legend David Bowie, and a few months later, Prince followed him to the stars. Then, Hollywood’s most famous union fell apart. Yep, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie split, and it wasn’t pretty. Of course, no year would be complete without some Kardashian kontroversies, and 2016 was full of them.

Check out our list below for 12 of the year’s most shocking moments in entertainment.

The 22 Most Outrageous Red Carpet Looks Of 2016

We fashion enthusiasts live for red carpet moments that take our breath away, reminding us why we care about what celebrities wear to events in the first place.

This look was one of those moments:

Some others, exhibited below, are not.

In 2016, celebrities the world over stepped out in looks that left us scratching our heads, looking on in utter amazement and thinking, “How did they do that? WHY did they do that?”

There were thigh-high slits and nearly naked wardrobe malfunctions waiting to happen. There was big hair, tiny tops and, of course, Nev Schulman’s nearly-naked fiancée, Laura Perlongo.

In short, 2016 was made even more outrageous than it was on its own thanks to the 22 daring outfits below. We’re looking at you, Lady Gaga.

15 Notable Podcasts That Came Out In 2016

What happened with podcasting in 2016? Certainly there was no runaway hit like “Serial” Season 1 that we can use as a tentpole to draw conclusions about The State Of Audio Today. When I think of this year’s water-cooler conversations on culture, the things that come to mind are “Stranger Things,” “Westworld” or “La La Land” — at least in my experience, no one podcast has yet to reach the critical mass of Sarah Koenig and co.’s serialized investigation of a murky Baltimore murder.

That doesn’t mean that podcasts didn’t make an impact. When I look back at the audio that affected me this year, I think of emotional fictional narratives or soul-baring admissions of humanity

In an episode of Chris Gethard’s podcast “Beautiful/Anonymous,” he tells someone that in doing his show (wherein anyone can call in anonymously to a number and Gethard will give them one hour of his time to listen and chat), he hopes that people find solace in having a platform and feeling listened to. And in turn, listening to people reminds him that his everyday trials and anxieties are part of a larger whole.

That is part of why I find podcasts so appealing — they help me remember that there are millions of experiences and perspectives I have yet to learn from, or appreciate. In short, in 2016, I spent a lot of time listening to people.

Below is a selection of podcasts that were born (or reborn) in 2016 that I loved, and hope you will, too.

“The Zezimas’ 2016 Christmas Letter”

By Jerry Zezima

Since I am in the holiday spirit (and, having just consumed a mug of hot toddy, a glass of eggnog and a nip of cheer, the holiday spirits are in me), I have once again decided to follow in that great tradition of boring everyone silly by writing a Christmas letter.

That is why I am pleased as punch (which I also drank) to present the following chronicle of the Zezima family, which includes Jerry, the patriarch; Sue, the matriarch; Katie and Lauren, the childriarchs; Dave and Guillaume, the sons-in-lawiarch; and Chloe and Lilly, the granddaughtersiarch.

Dear friends:

It sure has been an exciting 2016 for the Zezimas!

Jerry had a particularly exciting year, which began with the publication of his third book, “Grandfather Knows Best.” Like his first two books, “Leave It to Boomer” and “The Empty Nest Chronicles,” it’s a crime against literature. It also comes in handy for propping up wobbly table legs. Somehow, it didn’t make the New York Times bestseller list.

Jerry reached the pinnacle of his journalism career when he got a paper route. On a rainy night, he helped his newspaper carrier fling papers into subscribers’ driveways and returned a lost dog to her grateful owners, which was the best delivery of all.

Jerry also completed his two-year term as president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists without running that otherwise august organization into the ground. Members attending the NSNC conference in Los Angeles celebrated with a four-letter word: beer.

Jerry’s other adventures included being a server for a night at a restaurant. To ensure that the place wouldn’t go under, he waited on his own family (Sue, Lauren, Guillaume and Chloe) and got a nice tip: Don’t quit your day job.

That same group went bowling and Chloe, in an outing to celebrate her third birthday, beat everybody in the first game. She kindly let Jerry, whom she helped roll a strike and a spare in two late frames, win the second game.

Chloe also had her first sleepover at Nini and Poppie’s house and began a tradition of making breakfast (scrambled eggs, sausage, toast and a bagel) with Jerry, whose scant culinary skills pale in comparison with those of his granddaughter.

Chloe got her first haircut (Jerry got one the same weekend, approximately his millionth) and got her first big-girl bed, where she keeps her stuffed friends. (Jerry, who goes to bed when he’s stuffed, keeps pajamas and other dirty clothes on his.)

Sue and Jerry refinanced the mortgage on their house, a hellish process that took months and was almost undone by a three-year-old unpaid traffic ticket. Now Jerry is afraid to drive to the bank to pay the new mortgage.

Jerry turned 62, which means he is eligible for Social Security and can, if he wants, retire. Considering his financial obligations (see above), he is convinced he will be working posthumously.

Speaking of death, Sue and Jerry lost Bernice, the last of their four cats, who at age 17 went to that big litter box in the sky. To fill the void (Bernice was fat), they welcomed Maggie, their sweet granddog, who is 11 and living with them temporarily. She keeps the house safe by being a canine alarm system, which makes her more valuable than Jerry.

Katie and Dave, both journalists living in Washington, D.C., had lots to report on this year and learned the wisdom of the late, great humorist Art Buchwald, who also was based in the nation’s capital and famously wrote, “You can’t make anything up anymore. The world itself is a satire. All you’re doing is recording it.” Katie and Dave record it very well.

For the record, the best thing to happen in the family in 2016 was the birth of Lilly, Lauren and Guillaume’s beautiful baby daughter. Everyone loves the adorable girl, including Chloe, who kisses her little sister and helps Lauren and Guillaume take care of her. So does Sue. Jerry tells her jokes, just as he does with Chloe. When you’re a grandfather, that’s your job.

Merry Christmas with love and laughter from the Zezimas.

5 Black Beauty Moments That Stole The Spotlight In 2016

Let’s be real, 2016 was filled with so many magical black girl beauty moments. From music videos to magazine covers, black women rocked them all.

On Thursday’s episode of the “BV Breakdown” ― HuffPost Black Voices’ bi-weekly show devoted to all things black culture ― Essence’s fashion and beauty director Julee Wilson joined as a guest to reflect on a few of her favorite show-stopping looks.

This list is by no means comprehensive (we’d be here all day if it were) but to give you a glimpse, here are five of Wilson’s most memorable black beauty moments from this year:

1. Solange’s “A Seat At The Table” Album Cover

Solange released her third studio album in September and blessed us with an incredible cover image to go with it. The artist’s bold brows, barely-there makeup and multicolored duckbill hair clips fit the unapologetic tone of her album perfectly, and even inspired a wave of Solange Halloween costumes

”This will forever be an iconic image. I think that she has just really pushed the envelope stylistically with her music, but also [with her] fashion and beauty,” Wilson said. “This ‘Seat At The Table’ album was such a beautiful homage to black women and I love that she went this very creative, abstract route for her album cover.”

2. Any Of Alicia Keys’ “No Makeup” Looks

Alicia Keys set off a major beauty movement when she announced her commitment to go makeup-free. While her choice to relinquish her makeup routine sparked both cheers and criticism, Keys looks as beautiful as ever with her sans-makeup look.

“Everyone was talking about it when Alicia Keys wrote that ‘Lenny Letter’ essay about forgoing makeup. I think it was really powerful,” said Wilson. “I wear makeup. I’m wearing makeup right now. I think my makeup is on fleek … but I think it’s just a beautiful stance for a woman, any where, any how, to say, ‘I’m just going to let you see me for me.’”

3. Gabby Douglas’ Bold Lipstick At The Olympics

Gabby Douglas won an Olympic gold medal with her “Final Five” teammates in Rio this year, “but she also gets a gold medal for this makeup look,” Wilson said. Douglas’ crimson lipstick caught our eye the moment that she stepped up to start her routine.

“Some people tried to come for her hair again, but she wasn’t playing those games,” Wilson said. “I love that she really brushed the haters off this year and I think she stepped into this womanhood. I feel like that lipstick was really a moment to be like, ‘I’m grown. Don’t come for me. I’m a badass athlete. I’m a gold medal Olympian.”

4. Lupita Nyong’o’s Towering Met Gala Hair

Actress Lupita Nyong’o abandoned her signature close-cropped cut and opted to take her hair to new heights at this year’s Met Gala. While Vogue compared the look to Aubrey Hepburn, Nyong’o and her hairstylist Vernon Francois actually drew inspiration for the ‘do from Nina Simone and African traditions.

“They just have such an amazing partnership and they came up with this beautiful hairstyle, which is a homage to lots of different hairstyles from the past,” Wilson said of Nyong’o and Francois’ friendship. “Nina Simone had a hairstyle like this… I think it was beautiful that [Nyong’o] chose to do it on the biggest red carpet for fashion.”

5. Sasha Obama’s Standout Cornrow Braids

The White House’s Canadian state dinner was filled with all sorts of stunning looks, but Sasha Obama’s braids, which she paired with winged eyeliner and a choker, stole the show.

“I feel like everyone was doing those two cornrow braids, dutch braids, and she just did it in such a chic, beautiful, new way,” Wilson said. “It’s also a great nod to black hair and braids… You know she could have gone for the sleek cut, but I love that she did this.”

Woman Hacks Her Fridge To Dispense Wine, Makes 2016 Great Again

It’s been a rough year. Let’s wine whine about it.

When British blogger Clare Potts recently moved into a new home, she found herself with both a new refrigerator and some wine that needed storing. One genius hack later, she tweeted what may be the greatest invention of 2016, if not ever:

Potts simply filled her fridge’s water cooler with wine and let it flow from the door dispenser as normal. Anyone with a similar system can do it, but Potts recommends washing the cooler to prevent clogging if you choose to fill it with water again afterward.

“We’ve only had the fridge for a few days so we haven’t felt the effects yet,” she told HuffPost. “I’m sure it will come in very useful over Christmas and New Years!”

Oh, what a fabulous holiday season it will be with this invention. Cheers!

But you could also say “blonde” or “braids” or “bombastic ponytails” and you wouldn’t be wrong. As we saw it, this year Blake Lively won hair at least fifteen times this year. The 6 Things You Shouldn’t Bring To The 2016 Thanksgiving Table

With the country feeling about as fractured as it’s ever felt, Thanksgiving ― a holiday already fraught with family demons ― is looking to be a doozy. Here’s some advice we gave you in 2013 about what not to bring to the Thanksgiving table, updated:

1) Your politics.

Just like the Civil War divided families, so has the election of Donald Trump. We have either all seen or all denied the big uptick in hateful behavior since Nov. 8.

Everyone needs a day off, right? There is no point in telling Uncle Tim what a gross disservice he did to his daughters by voting for Trump. Nor does it serve any useful purpose to see how many times you can call Clinton “Crooked Hillary” just to annoy people.

Just give it a rest.

2) Your eating habits.

Sure you can skip all the meat dishes, as well as anything with gluten, sugar or nuts, but how about just doing it quietly? Most Thanksgiving tables are laden with enough food to feed a small army, so pick your spots. Just don’t make a big deal about it, OK?

Both you and your mom will feel better if you skip the eye roll when she offers you the turkey drumstick even though you have been a vegetarian since college. Did she just forget, or is she taking a happy walk down Memory Lane when you were a little kid and used to make her promise the drumstick was yours, all yours?

As for everyone else, your hosts have spent a lot of time, energy and money on this feast. In the spirit of the holiday and in recognition of their effort, how about just buttoning up the lecture on why you feel so much better now that you are gluten-free and let the rest of us enjoy the stuffing in peace?

3) A dish without asking.

I like to claim credit for inventing the pot luck, but I suppose sharing the burdens of meal preparation was something the cavewomen came up with. But before you just bring something, please check what your hostess needs. That or she will wind up with four green bean casseroles, as I once did. And damn my kids for liking the one our Alabama guest made better than mine. She opened cans of green beans, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions and just kind of tossed it all together. I’ve never been able to serve my kids the fresh organic bean dish since.

4) A bottle of wine.

Don’t bring a bottle of wine; bring two. One is your contribution to the meal and the other is for your hosts to enjoy later. Bringing a hostess gift is a long-lost tradition that should be revived. Especially if I’m the hostess. Pinot Noir, please.

5) Your sense of entitlement.

Thanksgiving is when we remember what we are grateful for. Make sure that people are grateful for you and grateful you are there. You do that by genuinely being interested in what Uncle Bob has to say, showing real happiness that your cousin just got into a better college than the one you went to, and that your divorced sister just got engaged to a really great guy while the seat to your left remains empty. Adopt an attitude of gratitude for what you have and put all other feelings aside.

6) Your rotten childhood or any other baggage.

Most of our problems don’t start at the Thanksgiving table. And we shouldn’t bring them along. Thanksgiving isn’t the time to ask for money, nor is it the time to point fingers of blame on things in your life that aren’t going so swell. Seriously, save that for Christmas. And remember, you already have the therapist booked for Monday.

PassPorter’s Walt Disney World 2016

PassPorter’s Walt Disney World 2016

The size and scope of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is enough to make the most seasoned traveler shiver. Disney has packed four major theme parks and 22 resort hotels into those fabled 47 Florida square miles. With all those choices, how can an everyday Mom and Pop hope to deliver a family vacation to remember? “Planning!” say Walt Disney World vacation veterans Jennifer and Dave Marx. “The vast Walt Disney World complex is not designed for procrastinators or last-minute travelers. Without a plan, a Disney vacation is nowhere near as much fun, and can quickly sink a family’s finances. A plan and a budget will keep your vacation happily afloat.”The Marxes put their advice where it could help others with their award-winning travel guide, PassPorter’s® Walt Disney World® 2016: The unique travel guide, planner, organizer, journal, and keepsake! The Marxes have been honing their advice, expanding their coverage, upgrading the book’s features, and delighting readers in 18 editions published over the past 17 years. Not content to write “just” another guide, the authors continue where other guides leave off. In one neat, spiral-bound package they’ve combined a 362-page guide with 14 organizer “PassPockets,” creating a proven planning system for the perfect vacation. What do you do with a PassPocket? Write your vacation itinerary on the front of each pocket before you go, store maps, brochures, passes, and receipts inside the pocket while you’re there, and record your memories and expenses on the back to review when you return home! Printed front-and-back with fill-in-the-blank sections for itineraries, To-Do lists, notes, expenses, meals, photos taken, and cherished memories, PassPockets make organized travel a snap! One pocket is dedicated to travel plans, another pocket is for lodging, ten one-a-day pockets are dedicated to vacation fun, another pocket is for an extra day or a special event, and a final pocket saves special memories and creates a trip report.
