Queen Elizabeth’s Doctor Dies in Tragic Cycling Accident in London

Queen Elizabeth’s longtime doctor has died in a tragic road accident in London.

Peter Fisher — a physician to the Queen for around 17 years — was killed when his bicycle collided with a truck in High Holborn, Central London, at around 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The driver of the truck stopped at the scene and is currently assisting the Metropolitan Police with their investigation. The incident occurred on national Cycle to Work Day in Britain.

Buckingham Palace confirmed to PEOPLE that the Queen has been informed of Fisher’s death but had no further comment to make.

“He was much respected as a good doctor who saw homeopathy as complementary to medical care,” Sir Marcus Setchell, former surgeon-gynecologist to the Queen, told the London Evening Standard about the death of his colleague. “We are all shocked by his tragic loss.”

Gill Gaskin, medical director at University College Hospital, London — where Fisher, 67, worked for more than 35 years within The Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM) — added that staff were “shocked and saddened” at his death.

“Peter was a highly regarded colleague and friend of many at the RLHIM,” Gaskin added in the written statement. “He was committed to holistic and compassionate care for his patients.”

“He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and patients alike.”

The royal family has used homeopathy (a holistic, natural approach to medicine) for generations. In 1920, the Duke of York, later King George VI, became patron of RLHIM, while Frederic Quin, who founded the hospital in 1849, was once physician to Prince Leopold, Queen Victoria’s father-in-law. The Queen continued her father’s patronage when she assumed the throne in 1953 and Prince Charles is known to be a big fan of using alternative therapies to treat both himself and his farm animals.

During his life, Fisher combined homeopathy and other forms of complementary medicine with conventional medicine, specializing in the treatment of rheumatological complaints including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and soft tissue syndromes such as fibromyalgia.

He also treated skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis and a range of general medical problems for both NHS and private patients.

“It is with deep sadness that Pete’s family and friends would like to recognize and honor the loving man, father, son and dear friend who has been tragically taken from us,” his family said in a statement released through Scotland Yard.

“He was devoted to his cause, a global authority in his field. We are all devastated by his sudden loss, as he had touched deeply so many of our lives.”

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are currently investigating the incident. No arrests have so far been made.

NCIS: Los Angeles’ Linda Hunt Recovering After ‘Minor Traffic Accident’

Linda Hunt is on the mend after a car crash on Monday left her hospitalized.

The 73-year-old Oscar winner and NCIS: Los Angeles star told CBS2 Los Angeles on Tuesday that she didn’t suffer any serious injuries in the wreck and was getting back on her feet.

“Yesterday I was involved in a minor traffic accident and taken to the hospital,” Hunt said in a statement to the outlet. “I’m pleased to report I’m recovering well and have no serious injuries. Thank you for all the well wishes! I’m looking forward to starting production on NCIS: Los Angeles later this summer.”

A rep for Hunt did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

TMZ was first to report Hunt’s crash. According to the outlet, she was making a left turn when the black BMW SUV she was driving collided with two cars.

“An eyewitness tells us Hunt struck a sedan and then collided with a Honda SUV,” TMZ reported. “Hunt was visibly shaken, and witnesses escorted her to a lawn chair on the sidewalk. We’re told paramedics evaluated Linda on the chair and then determined she needed to be taken to the hospital.”

Pictures from the scene captured paramedics speaking with Hunt before her hospital visit. The other drivers suffered minor injuries from the crash, TMZ reported.

Hunt won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 1983 for her performance in The Year of Living Dangerously. She made history as the first star to win an Oscar for playing a role of the opposite sex.

The New Jersey native has since gone on to appear in more than 200 NCIS: Los Angeles episodes, as well as tackle roles in The Practice, Carnivàle, and Disney’s Pocahontas (in which she voiced the character of Grandmother Willow).

Canadian Snowboarder Wins Olympic Medal One Year After Near-Fatal Accident: It’s a ‘Miracle’

Just 11 months ago, Mark McMorris lay in a Canada hospital with 17 broken bones, a collapsed lung, a ruptured spleen, a fractured jaw and internal bleeding. But on Sunday, the 24-year-old snowboarder won the bronze medal in men’s snowboard slopestyle at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“I’m pretty stoked because people would die for a medal at the Olympics — and I nearly did,” the athlete told reporters on Monday. “To stand on the podium again, it definitely feels special. Yeah, it’s definitely a miracle and I’m really thankful.”

The Regina, Canada, native navigated an intricate course filled with jumps and rails to take home the medal. After the win, McMorris tweeted a grateful message: “Thank You Life🙏🏻❤.” He included a pair of photos, one showing him in a hospital bed nearly a year earlier, and the other of himself holding the medal.

In March 2017, McMorris was snowboarding in Whistler, British Columbia, and mistimed a jump, CNN reports.

“Hit a tree out of mid-air and pretty much broke everything and hurt a lot of internal organs,” he told CNN. “ was lucky enough to have my brother and a really awesome crew that had a satellite phone and got a helicopter there and pretty much saved my life. So pretty lucky.”

McMorris said that as he lay waiting for a helicopter that day, he was sure he wouldn’t survive.

“When I was laying there I was pretty sure I was gonna die because I had so many broken bones,” he told CNN. “I could tell there was a lot wrong inside.”

But McMorris made it.

On Sunday he stood proudly on the Olympic podium in Pyeongchang and smiled wide as he held up his medal. Soon, the Twittersphere flooded with praise for the snowboarder, with ski racer Lindsey Vonn calling the win “amazing” in a tweet.

“What a journey back to the podium for @MarkMcMorris. Mark – your tenacity & courage inspire so many of us. #PyeongChang2018,” Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted on Sunday.

The 2018 Winter Olympics began on Thursday and continue through Feb. 25.

North Carolina Pastor and Wife Who Lost Newborn and Toddler Sons in Tragic Accident Welcome Twins

A North Carolina pastor and his wife who lost their two sons in a tragic accident on the way home from a family wedding in 2015 welcomed twins Monday.

Hadley and Gentry Eddings, a pastor at Forest Hills Church in Charlotte, named the twin boys Isaiah Hobbs and Amos Reed in honor of their older brothers.

The couple was in a caravan with family members on their way home from Wilmington to Charlotte during Memorial Day weekend in 2015 when a truck driver slammed into them, killing their 2-year old son Dobbs and sending Hadley, who was 37 weeks pregnant, into labor.

Hadley, a teacher at a church, ended up having an emergency C-section, but the baby boy — whom they named Reed — died just two days later.

In January, the couple announced the happy news that they were expecting twins.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Hadley said at the time, “The Lord has not left us for one second in our grief of losing our two boys almost two years ago. God is a redeemer and a restorer! God blesses us beyond what we deserve or could ever imagine.

“We are excited that Dobbs and Reed are going to be big brothers to twins! We are so thankful for our family and so many friends who have prayed for us and cheered us on our way. We’re rejoicing, and thank Jesus for these two precious little ones!”

The couple made headlines when they publicly forgave the driver who caused the wreck.

Gentry, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, spoke to mourners at the time of the accident, saying he and his wife had forgiven the truck driver and were relying on their faith to get through such a difficult time.

Why Planes Crash: An Accident Investigator’s Fight for Safe Skies (Unabridged)

Boarding an airplane strikes at least a small sense of fear into most people. Even though we all have heard that the odds of being struck by lightning are greater than the odds of perishing in a plane crash, it still doesn’t feel that way. Airplane crashes might be rare, but they do happen, and they’re usually fatal. David Soucie insists that most of these deaths could be prevented. He’s worked as a pilot, a mechanic, an FAA inspector, and an aviation executive. He’s seen death up close and personal – deaths of colleagues and friends that might have been prevented if he had approved certain safety measures in the aircrafts they were handling. His years of experience have led Dave to become an impassioned consultant on the topic of airline safety. This includes not only advising the Obama administration, but also taking a leading role in the congressionally funded NextGen interdepartmental initiative in regards to both the department of transportation and the departments of defense, homeland security, FBI, CIA, and others. Enrique Iglesias Recovering After Fingers Sliced By Drone In Concert Accident

NEW YORK (AP) — Enrique Iglesias was recovering Sunday after some of his fingers were sliced when he grabbed a drone during a concert in Tijuana, Mexico.

A representative for the singer said in a statement to The Associated Press that Iglesias was “semi-treated” after the accident at the side of the stage to stop the bleeding on Saturday night. He was advised to end the show but went on to perform for an additional 30 minutes. “During the show a drone is used to get crowd shots and some nights Enrique grabs the drone to give the audience a Point of View shot. Something went wrong and he had an accident,” the statement read. “He decided to go on and continued playing for 30 minutes while the bleeding continued throughout the show.”

Concertgoers at Plaza de Toros de Playas posted photos on social media of Iglesias, 40, with blood all over his white T-shirt.

“He was rushed to the airport where an ambulance met him there. He was then put on a plane to L.A. to see a specialist,” the statement read.

Iglesias’ show for 12,000 fans is part of his Sex and Love World Tour. His website says his next show is in July in Mexico City.

Inspiring 8-Year-Old Won’t Let A Tragic Accident Stop Her From Dancing

Alissa Sizemore was playing outside with her siblings one night in May 2014 when a UPS truck ran over her right leg. According to, the 7-year-old’s foot couldn’t be saved.

At the time, Alissa’s dance teacher told the local news outlet, “She’ll dance again.” Mom Heather Sizemore recalls Alissa’s determination to do so. When the mom took Alissa’s sisters to their dance studio last summer for dance team placements, the little girl handed her mom her crutches and started to dance. “She hopped to the middle of the room and gave it her all. She wasn’t going to let anybody hold her back,” Heather told PEOPLE.

Members of the dancer’s hometown raised enough money for the little girl to get a prosthetic leg in September 2014 — a big contribution came from an 11-year-old girl who sold her prize pig to donate $ 10,000 to the Sizemore family. After receiving the limb, Alissa started rehearsing for her dance studio’s recital.

“Dancing has been my favorite thing since I was 4. I don’t have part of my leg, but I can’t let that stop me. I still want to dance,” Alissa told PEOPLE.

In late February, the now 8-year-old took the stage to perform a beautiful and inspiring routine to Colbie Caillat’s “Try,” and received a standing ovation.

Watch her performance above, and head over to PEOPLE to read more about Alissa.

Champagne Was Created By Accident, And We Have Mother Nature To Thank

Champagne is a tongue-tingling symbol of celebration, extravagance and class. Poppin’ bottles is an exclusive activity reserved for blinged-out rappers, dripping in diamonds and costly furs, well-paid athletes who’ve won it big and the general elite. (Marilyn Monroe allegedly bathed in a tub filled with 350 bottles of the bubbly drink.)

But the drink wasn’t always the crème de la crème. Just as lobster was once regarded as a poor man’s food, Champagne was considered a result of careless winemaking. In the 1400s, capricious temperature changes in Europe infringed on the fermentation process. “The cold temporarily halted fermentation, the process by which wine is made,” Marina Koren writes in Smithsonian Magazine. “When spring arrived with warmer temperatures, the budding spirits began to ferment again. This produced an excess of carbon dioxide inside wine bottles, giving the liquid inside a fizzy quality.”

The weather-induced effervescence was initially met with disdain. Bottles of the accidental bubbly would continuously explode and the flawed drink was deemed unacceptable by many. But in the same way lobster came to be a divine delicacy, the twice-fermented wine transformed from a spoiled drink into a luxurious libation.

By the end of the 17th century, a monk named Dom Pierre Pérignon (sound familiar?) was asked to fine-tune the drink, and make it even more enriched with bubbles. (These days, champagne contains approximately one million bubbles per glass.) Though Pérignon was not the only one focused on the drink, he is often cited as Champagne’s creator. This could explain why Dom Pérignon-branded Champagne starts at upwards of $ 100. But really, we owe our appreciation to the weather fluke.

Take Champagne’s story as an inspiration. This year, as you clink and toast with a glass that hisses and pops, remember that the best things in life can’t always be planned, and that some accidents are actually miracles. Cheers to you, Champagne.

Walmart: Tracy Morgan Partly To Blame In Truck Accident Because He Wasn’t Wearing Seatbelt

DAVID PORTER, Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Actor-comedian Tracy Morgan and other people in a limousine struck from behind by a Wal-Mart truck on a highway in June are at least partly to blame for their injuries because they weren’t wearing seatbelts, the company said in a court filing Monday.

The filing was made in federal court in response to a lawsuit Morgan filed in July over the accident, which killed his friend James McNair, who was accompanying the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” star back from a show in Delaware. Morgan spent several weeks in rehab with rib and leg injuries.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said in the filing that the passengers’ injuries were caused “in whole or in part” by their “failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device,” which it said constitutes unreasonable conduct.

An attorney representing Morgan and the other plaintiffs called Wal-Mart’s contentions “surprising and appalling.”

“It’s disingenuous,” attorney Benedict Morelli said. “It’s not what they said they were going to do initially, which was take full responsibility. I’m very upset, not for myself but for the families I represent.”

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and punitive and compensatory damages. It says the retail giant should have known that its truck driver had been awake for more than 24 hours before the crash and that his commute of 700 miles from his home in Georgia to work in Delaware was “unreasonable.” It also alleges the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said in an email that the company “continues to stand willing to work with Mr. Morgan and the other plaintiffs to resolve this matter.”

Passengers Ardley Fuqua and Jeffrey Millea and Millea’s wife, Krista Millea, also are named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Krista Millea was not in the limousine when the crash occurred but is a plaintiff because she has a related loss-of-services lawsuit stemming from the crash.

Truck driver Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, Georgia, pleaded not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges in state court. A criminal complaint also accuses him of not sleeping for more than 24 hours before the crash, a violation of New Jersey law.

A report by federal transportation safety investigators said Roper was driving 65 mph in the minute before he slammed into the limo van. The speed limit on that stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike is 55 mph and was lowered to 45 mph that night because of construction.

Roper had been on the job about 13 1/2 hours at the time of the crash, the report concluded. Federal rules permit truck drivers to work up to 14 hours a day, with a maximum of 11 hours behind the wheel.

Paul Walker’s Car Accident Was Not Caused By Mechanical Issues, Official Says

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators have found no evidence that the Porsche carrying “Fast & Furious” actor Paul Walker had mechanical problems before it crashed.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation tells The Associated Press the car lost control due to “speed, and speed alone.” The official requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly.

The investigation also ruled out debris in the roadway as causing the car in which Walker was a passenger to smash into a light pole and tree.

The Nov. 30 crash killed Walker and the driver, his friend and financial adviser Roger Rodas.

Investigators won’t set a firm speed at which they think the car was traveling until Porsche engineers come to California next month to extract information from on-board data collectors.

Cirque du Soleil Accident Leaves Performer Hospitalized

LAS VEGAS — LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Cirque du Soleil performer remains hospitalized after a fall during a show Friday night at the Aria resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

The performance company issued a statement Saturday saying the male artist was appearing in the “Wheel of Death” act during the 7 p.m. performance of “Zarkana” when he slipped and fell off the wheel. The act features two people who perform high-risk feats atop and inside a pair of spinning wheels rotating high above the stage, including rope skipping and jumps.

The company says the show was halted and the performer was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition and expected to be discharged in the next few days.

The company says it has a policy of not releasing performer’s names.

The accident occurred four months after a Cirque du Soleil acrobat died in a fall during a performance of the show “Ka” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, safety officials announced plans to cite Cirque du Soleil and the MGM after investigators concluded 31-year-old Sarah Guillot-Guyard fell 94 feet to the floor below on June 29 when a wire rope she was suspended from was severed due to her rapid ascent.

Guillot-Guyard was the first Cirque du Soleil performer to die in an onstage accident in the company’s 29-year history.
