It’s Equal Pay Day! 5 Easy Tips for Women to Negotiate the Salary They Deserve – According to Catt Sadler

In the past year, women across the country have joined forces to protest unequal pay in the workplace, from minimum-wage workers to blockbuster stars including Jennifer Lawrence. And perhaps no one has protested that wage gap more publicly than Catt Sadler, who inadvertently became the face of the movement when she quit her job at E! after discovering she was making half the salary of her male co-host.

So who better to raise awareness of Equal Pay Day – April 10, which is as far into this year  the average woman has to work to make what her male counterpart made in 2017 – than Sadler, who is teaming up with Luna Bar and AAUW to highlight the wage gap and offer solutions (including salary negotiation workshops hosted around the country, among other tools).  The star, who’s currently working on a docuseries about the topic with Lawrence, shared five easy tips for salary negotiation that she’s learned since becoming an activist for the cause.

1. Don’t rely on the company to make the best offer.

No one is more committed to your success than you, so you need to be prepared to be your own best advocate right out of the gate – don’t wait until you’ve “proven yourself” or trust that they’ll raise your compensation once you’ve put in time. “I would encourage people to start the day they step into the workforce,” Sadler says. “You often trust in your employer or the company in which you have dedicated more than a decade, like I did. I really just trusted the process, but that’s not enough. I wish I would have known to ask more, sooner. If you enter the workforce making more from the get go then you are not playing catch-up; for me I think it was just a little too late. At the end of the day we were just never going to get there.”

2. Do your research to find out what salary is fair, and write that number down ahead of time.

“I think a lot of women get the job offer and already the employer has dictated the ballpark range of what you can potentially make,” Sadler says. “A tip that surprised me was, you put down the number first. That requires doing some research, finding out what other women with similar experience in a similar position with the same expertise as you might be making – but you can gain a lot from that starting point being a little bit higher.”

3. Be ready to ask tough questions.

Because money is still a taboo topic, it can be very uncomfortable to bring up salary comps, but Sadler says it’s so important. “I think just talking at all and getting rid of this taboo notion that we are not supposed to share how much we make – I mean that’s where it all begins,” she says. “We can’t even have an argument or conversation amongst one another or say that in the workplace if people aren’t being completely transparent.”

And for women just starting out in their careers who might not have networks to tap for that information? “I think the future generations are already far more attuned to what’s going on, so I think we are growing a generation of girls from day one who just are expecting more,” she says. One way for new-to-the-workforce women to approach the topic: “Ask questions like, If I take this job, can I be sure that a male doing a similar job and contributing the same with the same education is not going to be paid more than me? These are questions that we can ask and we can expect what is fair from our employers.”

RELATED PHOTOS: 21 Female Stars Who Have Spoken Out About the Pay Gap

4. Bring men into the discussion as allies.

Sadler also thinks the next generation will be more attuned to wage disparity from both sides – it won’t just be a women’s issue. “When it comes to men and boys in general, the guys aren’t the problem. They aren’t the enemy; it’s the system that’s the issue. It’s the systematic way that we have done things for so long,” she says. As a mom of two young boys, she says they ask, “you have all these same contributions but this guy gets paid more only because his gender? For them it’s like, that’s not fair, that doesn’t make sense.”

5. And of course, support other women.

The star got very public support from stars including Debra Messing and Reese Witherspoon after her E! exit, and she says it’s so important to build up the women around you – which you can do by role-playing salary negotiations with friends to help them prepare and sharing salary information when you have it.

“We have to have women rally around one another, and I think we are doing that,” she said. “I’ve never been prouder to be a woman than I am today. That is the absolute truth. I mean the women that came before me, before my departure, they inspired me and I think it’s a real trickle effect. We have to keep being these champions for one another.”

All the Celebs Who Have Animal Doppelgangers, According to the Internet

Politicians. Dramatic actors. Broadcast journalists. Musicians. Entrepreneurs.

None of the above are known for having an especially great sense of humor. Fortunately, Mother Nature — and the Internet — have other ideas.

Is there anything funnier (or sillier) than a famous person embracing his or her animal lookalike? We think not. Check out some of the most delightful celebrity-furball doppëlgangers the World Wide Web has to offer.

Joe Biden Puppy

When Joe Biden met … Joe Biden? Netizens went nuts for this adorable photo-op of a 4-month-old golden retriever named after the former vice president posing with his namesake. “As soon as I told him his name was Biden, he started kissing the dog, which is like exactly what I expected Biden would do,” Sydney, the pup’s owner, said.

2. Adam Driver Cat

Eagle-eyed (or shall we say cat-eyed?) Time Inc. editor Marci Robin noticed a striking resemblance between this Monmouth County SPCA kitty and Kylo Ren himself, a.k.a. Star Wars actor (or Girls actor, your choice) Adam Driver. Throngs of fans online concurred; “Adam Driver Cat” became a sensation and was adopted soon thereafter.

3. Nicki Minaj Meets Melon Cat (or Limecat)

We believe this image speaks for itself, but should clarify that the infamous cat meme’s fruit-helmet is neither a melon nor a lime, but is (most likely) a pomelo.

4. John Travolta Dog

Those eyes. That jaw. The ever-amiable grin. This uniquely familiar-faced shelter pup and the Pulp Fiction star share a name, as well as some striking bone structure.

5. Anderson Cooper Cat

Of the stunning white-furred feline, the silver fox himself purred, “It does sort of look like me … I don’t know who you are, or where you’re from, or whether you were heretofore unaware of my steely blue eyes, but you and I have nothing in common. I mean yes, I once peed on the floor, but who hasn’t in Wolf Blitzer’s billiard room?” Oh, Anderson.

6. Samuel L. Jackson Dog

While John Travolta dog opines about Parisian burgers (“They call it a royale with cheese”), Samuel L. Dogson is more likely to let loose a string of righteous, expletive-laced Biblical verses (“There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17…”). All Pulp Fiction references aside, the Reddit community discovered this priceless dog mug back in 2013 and the Internet’s been barking about it ever since.

7. Taylor Lautner Alpaca

Cute and fuzzy, with deep-set brooding eyes and a seductive pout … we’re talking about the alpaca not the Twilight star, duh. You’d have to “twi-hard” to resist this pair of adorable twins.

8. Eliza Dushku Dog

Well, this is a first. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress actually invented this canine comparison herself — and more than 12K fans agreed.

9. David Schwimmer Cat (a.k.a. Ross Geller Cat)

The catty comparison was uncanny. And no, we’re not talking about Schwimmer’s turn as lawyer and celebrity patriarch Robert Kardashian. It started with one simple tweet, but snowballed into a full-on feline celebration of the beloved/beleaguered Friends character.

10. Patrick Stewart Dog

Just when we thought these celebrity doppëlgangers couldn’t get any more adorable, along came this tweet about the pup version of Sir Patrick Stewart. Coincidentally, the iconic actor had recently become a foster parent to a homeless pit bull. Good sport that he is, even Stewart agreed the likeness was spot-on.

11. Nick Offerman Cats a.k.a. Cats That Look Like Ron Swanson

Skip ahead to 1:43 in this Conan interview, where The Parks and Recreation actor admits that all the feline twin attention is “flattering.” Honestly, who wouldn’t want an entire fan-made Tumblr devoted to kitty lookalikes?

12. Steve Buscemi Dog

As it turns out, Ari isn’t the only dog who looks like Steve Buscemi, but she is arguably the most famous. This mutt’s mug launched a thousand articles, and we’re happy to report the once-homeless pup not only achieved fame with her unique face, but also a forever home.

13. Harrison Ford Dog

The origins of this scruffy cutie (we mean the dog, not Han Solo) are a bit sketchy, but his Internet stardom seems to have traveled from Buzzfeed to Twitter and Imgur instead of the other way around. Hmmm. This case may need a little Indiana Jones-style detective work.

14. Richard Branson Dog

These Are The Best Mineral Sunscreens, According To Dermatologists

We all know that wearing SPF is important, but chemical sunscreens ― the kind you’ve probably been wearing for years ― can be irritating for some people with sensitive skin. That’s where mineral sunscreen comes in.

Mineral sunscreens help prevent sun damage, just like traditional sunscreens, but they do so using physical blockers like zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. These  ingredients work by reflecting the sun off your skin, as opposed to absorbing and transforming harmful rays on the skin as chemical sunscreens containing the likes of oxybenzone, avobenzone and homosalate do.

With so many mineral sunscreens on the market now, it can be difficult to know which might be best for you. So we called up a couple of experts: Dr. Janellen Smith, a dermatologist at UC Irvine Health, and Dr. Angela Lamb, director of the Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology faculty practice, director of dermatology at the Institute of Family Health and an assistant dermatology professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Smith told HuffPost what matters most of all is picking a product you’re actually going to use.

“Mineral sunscreens are thicker and may leave a whitish color on your skin, so if this keeps you from wearing it, that is not good, and ‘medically’ means you are higher risk for skin cancer,” she said. “On the other hand, chemical sunscreens tend to have more ingredients and may be more irritating for sensitive skin. So both the irritation and your tendency to avoid them could leave you with a medical problem.”

Keep in mind as you shop around that although it most often refers to mineral sunscreens, “natural” is “not a term that dermatologists use” when referring to sunscreen, as Smith previously told HuffPost, nor is the term legally regulated in personal care products. Remember that the real danger of sun exposure isn’t the use of chemicals in sunscreen. But no matter which type of sunscreen you choose, make sure it’s labeled “broad spectrum” for protection from both types of harmful rays and has an SPF of 30 or greater.

Check out Dr. Lamb and Dr. Smith’s picks for best mineral sunscreens below.

7 Signs Your Relationship Will Go The Distance, According To Experts

A strong relationship is a marathon, not a sprint.

Some couples start off hot and heavy, but fizzle out over time. Others with a slow-but-steady burn can last decades or even a lifetime.

We asked relationship experts to tell us what common threads they notice among healthy, long-lasting relationships versus short, fleeting ones. See what they had to say below:

1. You can laugh at yourself and each other.

“I need to be clear here: I’m not talking about the scornful, contempt-filled laughter that is all about feeling superior and rejecting the other person. That can do serious damage over time. I’m talking about the self-effacing, I-don’t-take-myself-too-seriously sort of laughter that points out the quirks in ourselves, our partners, and our relationship while keeping it light. It’s when people can smile and rib one another about their favorite movie, shake their head and laugh about bad decisions they made in the past, and own up to their own selfishness from time to time.” ― Ryan Howes, psychologist

2. You find little ways to express your love every day.

“Having sex is easy. Being loving every day isn’t always. Showing your partner you care, appreciate, and value them can be done in many small, day-to-day ways. Little things add up, like making him a cup of coffee every morning or telling her you appreciate how hard she works. When these caring gestures become habits, it’s a sign a relationship is more likely to last.” ― Kurt Smith, therapist who specializes in counseling for men

3. You’re on the same page where it matters most.

“One good sign your relationship will last: your basic values are closely in sync. Research shows in general that the more similar partners are on the most important things in life -– such as religion, money, whether to have children and how to raise them –- the more likely they are to wind up together for life. That’s why it’s good early in a relationship to have a serious ‘values discussion,’ because this basic orientation toward what matters most is unlikely to change.”― Karl Pillemer, professor of human development at Cornell University and author of 30 Lessons for Loving

4. You give each other the benefit of the doubt.

“This means that even if your partner did something that seems insensitive or unkind, like show up late for your big night, you assume that their intentions are good and that they are not trying to hurt you on purpose. Instead of looking for blame, you share how you feel and see if there’s a way to do it differently in the future. Or if they are going to always be late, find some acceptance for who you chose.” ― Celeste Hirschman, sex expert and author of Making Love Real

5. You don’t keep score.

“Ideally, partners in a relationship do loving things for one another without expecting anything in return. They give freely, because giving to one another is reward enough. But that isn’t always the case. Many couples find themselves giving to the other in order to receive the same treatment in return. The problem is more than just a focus on giving in order to get: it’s when the arguments about ‘What you’re not doing for me’ start and partners start rolling out the scorecards: ‘I did the dishes five times last week!’ or ‘You’ve gone out with your friends five times since the last time I went.’ Instead of keeping score and waiting for the partner to make things fair for you, how about you just ask for what you want? Like, ‘I know we both hate doing the dishes, but how about we alternate weeks?’” ― Howes

6. You tackle problems together instead of avoiding them.

“Tackling problems head-on is a sure sign of relationship health. Problems are part of life and don’t have to be viewed as something bad to be avoided. They can be opportunities to grow and strengthen your connection and commitment to each other. It takes courage to address problems, but the reward is a stronger, more secure relationship.”― Smith

7. You each take responsibility for your mistakes.

“If each person is able to take responsibility for their part in challenging dynamics and admit when they are doing something from an upset or protective place instead of their calm, connected place, it makes a huge difference. Imagine one person saying, ‘I know when I get really upset I chase after you and that can be overwhelming’ and then the other one saying, ‘Yeah, it can, and I know I can shut down sometimes and that can be really scary for you.’ That’s a relationship that can last.” ― Danielle Harel, sex expert and author of Making Love Real

10 Things Husbands Can Do Better In 2017, According To Ex-Husbands

If experience is the greatest teacher, there is no one better to suited to offer advice to men on staying married than guys who’ve experienced divorce.

We asked divorced men to share the the resolutions they think married guys should make in 2017. See what they had to say below.

1. Don’t shy away from confrontation.

“I don’t mean Martha and George in ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’-level fighting but a good fight is sometimes good for the soul. My ex-wife and I never fought and you would think that was a good thing, but it’s not. You are two people, living together, day-in-and-day-out; at some point, annoying things your spouse does will get to you. But a good fight clears the air, blows the cobwebs out of the relationship and gives you a clean start. By the time my ex and I did fight, there were so many unresolved conflicts, we never had a chance of lasting. You will lose every fight that you don’t have.” ― Al DeLuise, blogger at Conflict and Scotch

2. But always seek to be the peacemaker.

“Arguing when you’re married happens as frequently as a fart joke in an Adam Sandler movie. The important thing to remember in the midst of fights with your spouse is that there are times when appeasement beats arrogance. If you love the person you’re with, the best gift you can give them is to let them win because odds are, you’re not as right as you think you are.” ― Craig Tomashoff, writer/producer and author of The Can’t-idates: Running For President When Nobody Knows Your Name

3. Try to do more of what makes your spouse happy.

“Ask your spouse: ‘What are the things I do that make you feel happiest in our marriage?’ Whatever she says, do that. If she hesitates, looks uncomfortable or doesn’t answer, you have an important follow-up question: ‘What are the things I do that make you feel bad?’ She might have a laundry list. You might feel defensive and want to say ‘Yeah, but…!’ to each thing. Your feelings might be hurt even if you pretend otherwise. You might disagree with her assessments. You might think she’s wrong, illogical or unfair. Doesn’t matter. Whatever she says, believe she’s telling you the truth. Then work with her each day so that none of those things will be said in the year to come.” ― Matthew Fray, blogger at Must Be This Tall To Ride

4. Express your appreciation for your spouse.

“Show your appreciation for your spouse ― for big things and small things. If she cooks supper,  say ‘thank you.’ When she does something for your children, let her know you appreciate what she does. Don’t wait for her to show appreciation to you before showing her some appreciation.” ― Elliott Katz, author of Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants: Timeless Wisdom On Being A Man

5. Keep the farts in check, please.

“Accidents happen. But for the love of all things sexy, do not expel gas out of any part of your body anywhere near your spouse.” ― Bill Flanigin, writer and teacher

6. Recognize how important the little things are.

“Remember that notes, flowers, cards or getting her favorite candy never get old. It’s a reminder that she still matters to you. It doesn’t always have to be planned dates, gifts or vacations. The smallest things make the biggest impact. So often men forget to continue to chase the women we love once we’re in the relationship. It’s the good morning texts, the kisses on the forehead and the walks in the park that keep her coming back for more. Keep that flame burning as long as you can and always put her at the forefront of your life.” ― Anthony D’Ambrosio, writer

7. Participate in her hobbies.

“Humans usually couple up with someone they feel shares a lot of common interests. Then, once you’re married, the reverse starts happening. It’s easy to start focusing on the ways you’re different instead, which is the path toward a life alone in your furnished studio apartment. If you accepted her love of antiquing or Bridget Jones movies when you were single, it’s important to not just tolerate but also participate in what she’s interested in. Find a way to enjoy what she enjoys.” ― Craig Tomashoff

8. Compliment your S.O. more often.

“Tell your wife you like her new outfit or the delicious dinner she made without her having to fish for a compliment. Every day there is something you can say to her to make her feel special. Remember, if you don’t, someone else might.” ― Bill Flanigan

9. Be smart about how you spend your money.

“Financial stress can bring out or worsen problems in a marriage.” ― Elliott Katz

10. Validate whatever your spouse is feeling about the state of your marriage.

“What your wife believes and feels about your marriage is true and real and important. And you having different beliefs and feelings has no bearing on hers. Her beliefs and feelings will be real whether or not you agree with her. Resolve to understand your wife’s beliefs about you and your marriage in 2017 and change the ones that matter. Do good things.” ― Matthew Fray

The World According to Humphrey

The World According to Humphrey

‘The time had arrived to put my plan into action. I was in grave danger and I had no choice. I only had one weapon: a rubber band. It had taken me a long time to get it hooked around the edge of my food dish. Now I carefully pulled it back as far as I could, aiming directly at those big doggy nostrils.’You can learn a lot about life by observing another species. That’s what Humphrey was told when he was bought as a classroom pet for Room 26. And it’s definitely true! In addition to his classroom escapades, each weekend he gets to sleep over with a different student like Stop-Giggling-Gail and Repeat-That-Please-Richie. Humphrey learns to read, write, shoot rubber bands and much more. With adventures galore, Humphrey’s life would be absolutely perfect if only the teacher, Mrs Brisbane, wasn’t out to get him.

The Gospel According to Rev. Walt ‘Baby’ Love

For more than three decades, Walt “Baby” Love has touched the lives of more than ten million listeners across the world. Every week he shares his triumphs, challenges, and soul-stirring moments through his award-winning radio programs. He has built a following of millions of listeners and repeatedly shattered racial barriers as a black man in an industry long dominated by whites. Yet this former army paratrooper with the famed 82nd Airborne Division, who served in Southeast Asia, also broke ground as a man of disciplined, abiding faith who refused to bow to corrupt influences. His enormously popular syndicated rhythm-and-blues show lost its spot on a Chicago radio station because Walt would not refrain from counseling his listeners to look to Jesus. Though beloved by his devoted listeners, Walt was often treated as an outcast by other African-American broadcasters and industry executives because of his outspoken and steadfast devotion to the Christian way of life. Still, both earthly and heavenly rewards have come in great abundance to the man raised by his great-grandparents in rural Pennsylvania. In The Gospel According to Rev. Walt “Baby” Love he offers reflections and inspirational thoughts drawn from his life. He shares how his religious convictions helped him survive and thrive in an industry he believed to be rife with corruption and ungodly influences. And he recounts the story of his progression of faith from a player of gospel and R & B music to an ordained minister and preacher of God’s Word. Each chapter focuses on a Bible verse, reflecting on its significance to him and guiding you on how to incorporate its teachings into your own daily life. An uplifting story of faith, family, and forgiveness in the face of God’s plan, The Gospel According to Rev. Walt “Baby” Love is inspirational reading at its best.

Angelina Jolie ‘Seems OK’ Amid Divorce From Brad Pitt, According To Ex Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thornton is keeping tabs on famous ex-wife Angelina Jolie during her divorce from Brad Pitt. The “Bad Santa 2” actor opened up about the actress during an interview with Entertainment Tonight last week.

“She seems, you know, OK to me when I talk to [her],” the actor told ET. “I don’t talk to her that often, though. You know? We’re still very good friends, but she’s got her world. I’ve got mine.”

Thornton recently opened up about his former wife of two years in a quirky, candid GQ interview, telling the magazine he “never felt good enough for her.” But it seems the pair has still managed to form a friendship.

“Once in a blue moon we come together,” the actor added in his ET interview. “Every now and then we talk, you know? Whatever. But when people are going through their trials and tribulations I try to leave them alone unless they want to talk to me.”

“Trials and tribulations” seems to be the mildest form of language possible to describe Jolie’s divorce from Brad Pitt. Pitt was only recently cleared of child abuse allegations after the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services investigated an incident between the actor and his eldest son, Maddox. The “Allied” actor and Jolie are still wrestling with a custody agreement for their six children.

The Perfect Wedding Dessert, According To You Personality

Are you having your wedding at Four Seasons or at a campsite? No matter the vibe of your big day, we’ve got a dessert for you.

You and your partner have everything planned for your wedding: the rings you’ll exchange, the first song you’ll dance to, and the pajamas you’ll put on as soon as the last guest has left. You’ve even made sure the friend from college—the one who’ll inevitably get a little sloppy and distract from the tension between your extended family members—has RSVP’d yes.

But the detail that can sometimes be hardest to finalize—the same detail that will leave a lasting, and hopefully sweet, impression on your guests—is dessert. In so many ways, we’re living in an era after the reign of the standard three-tiered wedding cake with two figurines on top. Today, there’s more room for creativity—to serve pudding or milkshakes or trifle as the last course, depending on the mood you’re going for.

To celebrate the start of wedding season and the launch of Food52’s registry, we’ve organized 24 desserts by wedding personality. If you serve any of these, we expect an invitation.

8 Facts That’ll Change How You View ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ According To Alyson Hannigan

For everyone who thinks they know everything about “How I Met Your Mother,” prepare to be lawyered.

Alyson Hannigan, otherwise known as Lily Aldrin, has been busy since the show ended a little more than a year ago. She’s had her hands full with being a mom, has a role in a new film called “Modern Love” and she’s even working with Ball Park’s Finest hot dogs, which she did admit, though she “usually” doesn’t try to brag, looked so good after she cooked them over a campfire that they wouldn’t even need a filter on Instagram.

During a short reprieve from her busy schedule, Hannigan took some time to chat with The Huffington Post about some behind-the-scenes stories from “HIMYM.” Prepare yourself: they might change the whole way you look at the show.

1. The cast talked about having an intervention for all of their puns.

Image: Netflix

When asked if the cast had any interventions that didn’t make the show, Hannigan said, “We talked about needing an intervention for ourselves to stop making so many puns. We would just pun for hours and hours and hours. It was great, but we were like, ‘We might have a problem,’ but we enjoyed it.”

The puns all started when a guest star mentioned the magazine Cat Fancy, Hannigan added: “We started having cat puns, and we had an afternoon of punning anything about cats. Fancy that!”

2. Alyson Hannigan’s real kid was fired from the show.

One of Hannigan’s kids was slated to play Lily and Marshall’s second child, but then she got some disappointing news. “They fired my kid from that role. She was gonna be the baby, but [producer] Carter Bays was like, ‘Nope. She’s too old,’ and she got replaced,” Hannigan said.

“I was like, ‘You fired my child. First of all that’s ageism. I don’t think you’re allowed to fire her because she’s too old,'” she joked.

3. The Cockamouse was real.

Image: PopSugar

The Cockamouse was the mysterious hybrid creature that Marshall and Lily found in their apartment, and though it seems like something someone made up, like the “South Park” monster ManBearPig, it turns out this was based on a real story.

“Yes, that is based on a story that happened to [producer] Kourtney Kang in New York in an apartment she lived in,” says Hannigan. She continued, “They were not sure if it was a cockroach or a mouse. And they’re pretty convinced it must’ve been both and it did fly away.”

To that, HuffPost responded, “Are you freaking kidding me?” Hannigan said, “I don’t think it flew out of the window, but it flew.”

4. The cast originally wanted Victoria to be the mom.
himym

“Early on, I wanted Victoria to be the mom,” Hannigan said. “I guess Carter later said had we got canceled she would’ve been the mom. But, you know, somebody great would come on [the show] and we would be like, ‘Yeah, we want her to be the mom,’ so it was sort of just like whoever was on for a long period of time. We’re like, ‘Let her be the mom. Let her.’ We just loved everybody.”

5. Some of the cast knew early on that the mom would die.

Image: Giphy

Actor Josh Radnor was told about the major “HIMYM” finale twist during Season 1 of the show and Hannigan actually found out early as well. They had to film a lot of reactions for Ted Mosby’s kids early in the series that would then air in later seasons, the actress said, and after that some “whisperings” started getting out that the series would end with the mom’s death.

“I knew that was the case,” said Hannigan. “I didn’t know who the mom was going to be, but I did know that the reason he was telling all these stories is because she passed away, which was very sweet.”

6. Producers were worried Alyson Hannigan and Cristin Milioti looked too similar.
180792549

Hannigan says the whole process of finding the right actress to play the mom was “very secretive” and caused some suspicion around set when trailers that would “never be locked” suddenly were. Hannigan says she first met the mother, Cristin Milioti, in a makeup trailer because producers wanted to see how the pair looked side by side.

“They wanted to look at us next to each other to see if they were going change her hair or something because they were a little worried that we looked similar, so I had to go stand next to her and we had some people look at us together,” she said.

7. Alyson Hannigan was the reason Lily never had a musical number.

Image: Giphy

Each of the main cast members on “HIMYM” had a musical number except for Lily — and it turns out there was a good reason for that.

“I begged them not to make me,” said Hannigan. “Yeah, singing has never been something that I wanted to do publicly. It’s actually like a phobia. I know it sounds weird, but it has always been that way. And then I find myself in these shows that want to do musicals, and I’m like, ‘Noooooo!'”

Hannigan says she has gotten better when it comes to singing, but she’s “not gonna be dropping an album anytime soon.”

8. If it was up to Jason Segel, “HIMYM” would have a Hanukkah reunion show.

A photo posted by Jason Segel (@jasonsegel) on

The actress told HuffPost she’d definitely be into a “HIMYM” reunion and that Jason Segel was actually coming up with some ideas during the finale.

“Jason was pitching some really funny specials, like a Hanukkah special and all these things with Carter. It was quite funny… Carter said we could do eight Hanukkah specials. One for each night. I’d be up for it,” she said.

How To Eat Spaghetti Like A Lady, According To A Vintage Issue Of Life Magazine

In 1942, “Bambi” was released by Walt Disney, Jimi Hendrix was born and folks were instructed to eat forkfuls of spaghetti four noodles at a time.

A vintage issue of Time Life provided a step-by-step guide to teach people how to eat noodles with charm and dignity. No, it’s not as simple as transporting the food from plate to mouth; there is a certain art to eating tube-shaped sauced carbohydrates. If you’re interested in learning the most polite method of spaghetti consumption, look no further than the tutorial below. All quoted captions are Time Life’s originals.

Step 1: “Four strands of spaghetti should be segregated from the pile.”

Alfred Eisenstaedt via Getty Images
No more and no less. Anything larger would be positively vulgar.

Step 2: “With soup spoon as prop, twirl fork and spaghetti gently.”

Alfred Eisenstaedt via Getty Images
No diner should have to endure the indecency of loose pasta splattering on a pristine tablecloth. The spoon acts as a noodle hood, mitigating potential twirling mishaps.

Step 3: “A ladylike mouthful of spaghetti is ready for consumption.”

Alfred Eisenstaedt via Getty Images
After the taxing work of segregating and twirling, this mouthful is just about ready to eat. Admire the masterpiece wrapped around the fork.

Step 4: “Full forkfuls should be consumed in entirety. Nibbling is out.”

Alfred Eisenstaedt via Getty Images
If you plan to nibble, well, don’t. Nibbling is out! The spaghetti has been twirled into a sizable portion, meant for a chomp, not a delicate, rabbit-like bite.

Step 5: “Truant strands require patience, lip facility, suck-power.”

Alfred Eisenstaedt via Getty Images
Noodles will inevitably escape from your mouth, but we have lips for a reason. According to Time, that reason is “suck-power.”

Step 6: “With end in sight, diner has consumed 160 in. of spaghetti.”

Alfred Eisenstaedt via Getty Images
You’ve done it! You are prim, you are proper and you’re ready for another four noodles. Some may be exhausted by this process by the end of the meal, but with practice you’ll become a disciplined diner worthy of an etiquette trophy.

Autism and the World According to Matt

Autism and the World According to Matt

They say you must walk a mile in another person’s shoes to really know them. Liz Becker is an Autism Mom who walks a marathon in her autistic son’s shoes and details it beautifully in her book Autism and The World According to Matt: A collection of 50 inspirational short stories on raising a moderate/severe mostly non-verbal autistic child from diagnosis to independence. This delightful collection of stories is a love letter from a mom who refuses to accept the 1990 view of autism that is imposed on her son, and instead embarks on a journey to uncover the beauty of who her son really is. The stories encompass everything from the trials and tribulations of potty training to helping Matt get his own apartment. Becker’s style of writing evokes an Earl Hamner simplicity, making you feel as though Walton’s mountain has visited the land of Autism. The result is lush and beautiful, you feel as though you are a part of the family that continually gathers ranks to protect Matt and help him safely make his way to independence. Readers will find themselves laughing along as both mother and son find the way to communicate in a world filled with complexities, half-truths and unrealistic expectations. They will cheer as Matt enjoys victories large and small and, like me, they will likely shed a tear when the road blocks seem just too tall to scale. Do yourself a favor and read this inspirational book from a Mom who helped to forge a path for Autism parents before Autism Speaks, before insurance reform and before there was any reason to hope.” -Shannon Penrod, Host, Autism-Live

‘According To My Mother’ Takes A Comedic Look At LGBT Acceptance And Cultural Differences

Like a lot of queer people, Daniel K. Isaac has a complicated relationship with his mother, Esther.

Esther is a devoutly religious Korean-American who doesn’t approve of her son’s sexuality — and she isn’t shy about telling him so. For a long time, Isaac grappled with how to deal with his mother’s disapproval and constant comments about his sexuality. But then friends made him realize something powerful — the way his mother communicated her feelings about his life and sexuality are actually hilarious.

Like…

daniel

And…

daniel

They’re so funny, in fact, that Daniel created a hashtag, #AccordingToMyMother, which became a viral Internet sensation. This happened not only because of the comedic nature of their communication, but because of the visible exploration of the love between a mother and child, despite the way that cultural and religious differences can serve as a wedge in their relationships.

Now, Isaac plans to turn the #AccordingToMyMother sensation into a film, funded through a Kickstarter campaign. While his mother is embarrassed by the online attention she has received, especially with her living in California and Daniel in New York, she is fully supportive of the film and embraces the idea that art can be therapeutic.

The Huffington Post spoke with Isaac this week about why he decided to start sharing his relationship with his mom with the public, and what he hopes can be achieved achieve through this film.

isaac

The Huffington Post: What made you want to start sharing your mom’s quotes?
Daniel K. Isaac: Living on opposite sides of the country, the main form of communication my mom and I have is by phone. In order to limit the duration of these conversations, I often call my mom on my way to something: the subway station, work, rehearsal, or home. On many occasions, I would arrive at a destination while finishing up a call in front of my friends or castmates or coworkers and they would ask why I was in whatever emotional state my mother had put me in. I would recount the conversation, and rather than finding empathy or compassion for my plight, I would be met with laughter or utter shock and disbelief. It took an outsider’s perspective for me to realize how ridiculous or absurd and downright comical my mom sounded. When I learned to observe the hilarity rather than the negative arguments themselves, I didn’t mind calling my mom as much. In fact, I looked forward to it. I realized maybe other people would enjoy hearing about this too and see how a different perspective can radically change a relationship dynamic. So I took to Facebook and received more “likes” on those snippets of conversations than I ever did on a new profile picture. And that led to a Tumblr and an Instagram account and now a movie!

HP: What has the reaction been like?
I can no longer have a “mom-free” conversation. Instead of being introduced as Daniel the actor, I now hear, “You should add Daniel as a Facebook friend so you can read more about his mom.” People I haven’t spoken to in years will share embarrassing and intimate details about their family and their parental relationships or how they have been meaning to start their own hashtag or blog for “According To My Southern Mother” or “Sh*t My German Mom Says.”

I have a handful of friends and old acquaintances who are reticent to express their support. I’ve been told #accordingtomymother is improper. Or I am airing my dirty laundry. Or disrespecting my elders. Or dishonoring a familial bond or parent-child confidentiality (is that a thing?). I counter these points with stories about friends/acquaintances/strangers who tell me about their idiosyncratic families, who share potentially traumatic anecdotes for the first time, who are given permission and a platform to express their personal experiences and how they empathize with their own family backgrounds. And that makes it worth it — to at least help start the conversation.

What do you think your relationship with your mom can show us about understanding and love between people who maybe don’t see eye to eye?
When my mom disowned me for being gay, it was my freshman year of college. I remember going to the Financial Aid Office to consider my options as a suddenly-and-unexpectedly financially-independent 16-year-old, and they had me fill out some surprisingly simple paperwork and register for ten sessions of therapy. The therapist I was assigned ended up being the best thing to come from the Financial Aid Office — of all places! He really helped me find a new way to approach my relationship with my mother.

He said I could be “White,” “Black” or “Gray.” “White” meant I could go back in the closet as my mom hoped and prayed and return to the church and fight this “sin” and have the old relationship I had with my mother. “Black” meant resuming our silence, letting the rift grow larger and learning to live without a relationship with my mother because neither of us was going to change. I was always going to be gay. She was always going to believe that homosexuality was a choice and a sin. Or I could try to find the “Gray.” He highlighted the fact that my mother was a single parent and I was an only child and that our relationship, while incredibly messy, was important to each of us. And perhaps we could find a gray area in which I would accept the likelihood that she was never going to change her belief system, but I would learn to have compassion in the face of her homophobia, or ignore her ignorance, and let her words that were meant to hurt just go through one ear and out the other. Love by example, even when it may never be reciprocated in the same fashion. Am I always successful at this? No. I mean, I find a weird form of catharsis by writing about it and sharing it with the world. But I think the intention is pure. And maybe if we found the gray area in our extreme points of view a little bit more, then maybe we could have a little more understanding in the world. A little more love.

What’s the one thing you want people to take away from your experience?
I think by writing #accordingtomymother, I’ve learned the importance of trying to find laughter and comedy when there’s seemingly none to be found. I think humor is part of my healing and coping process and I hope to be able to share that with these posts and with this movie. I hope that, past the hilarity and the absurdity of it all, you can see one guy’s “resilience,” which sounds like too strong a word, but basically this is how I work with the cards I’ve been dealt and maybe that can help someone else through their own journey.

Oh, and, call your mom.

Kim Jong Un Learned To Drive At 3, According To A North Korean Teacher’s Guide

Kim Jong Un is an extraordinary human being if a teacher’s guide being sent to North Korean schools is any indication.

The guide, Kim Jong Un’s Revolutionary Activities, includes a lot of facts about the North Korean dictator that are — spoiler alert — hard to believe.

For instance, the guide suggests that teachers tell their impressionable students that Kim was able to drive a car at 3, and beat the chief executive of a foreign yacht company in a boating race when he was 9, UPI.com reports.

Similarly dubious claims were made about Kim’s father, Kim Jong-il, who reportedly shot 11 holes in one the first time he played golf and then never played again, the Mirror reports.

Taylor Swift Should Date Orlando Bloom, According To Ed Sheeran

Taylor Swift insists that she’s happily single, but according to her friend Ed Sheeran, the “Shake It Off” singer should look no further than her New York City apartment building for love.

Sheeran told British magazine Now that he thinks Orlando Bloom would be a wonderful match for the 25-year-old.

“He’s lovely, and they live in the same building,” Sheeran said. “[I’m hoping that] the magic might present itself eventually.”

Bloom, 37, is already pals with Swift’s best friend Selena Gomez, so perhaps sparks could fly between the two. Still, Swift isn’t interested in dating at the moment.

“Dating or finding someone is the last thing on my mind, because I can’t picture how it could work with the way my life is,” she told Vogue UK’s November issue. “I don’t know how a guy is supposed to walk next to his girlfriend when there are 20 men with cameras, and he can’t protect his girlfriend because that’s the life she chose. I just don’t see how it could work, so I don’t think about it, and I kind of run from it when it presents itself. ‘Cause I don’t think any guy really … They think that they would want to get to know me, and maybe date me, but I don’t think they want what comes with it.”

Since Bloom knows the business, maybe there’s hope, Ed. Maybe there’s hope.

The Top 100 Baby Names Of 2014, According To Nameberry

According to Nameberry, the most popular baby names for 2014 are Imogen for girls and Asher for boys. Nameberry’s Top 100 list is based on the number of views each name attracted on the website, out of a total of nearly 50 million views in 2014.

But the biggest news is the huge influence of television and celebrities on names zooming up Nameberry’s popularity list. The “Game of Thrones”-inspired girls’ name Khaleesi ranks at Number 2, with Daenerys also in the Nameberry Top 100.

On the boys’ side, new names entering the Top 10 are Silas, popularized by “Weeds,” along with Jasper, Milo and Ezra. The biggest leaps were the Jolie-Pitt-influenced Knox, up 60 places, followed by Archer and Ryker.

The three names climbing furthest up the Nameberry Top 100 for girls are Ellie, Cordelia and Maya; others include Adeline, plus four stylish L-names: Lucy, Lila, Louisa and Luna.

Names that made the biggest slides are emblematic of pop culture shifts. For girls, names losing popularity include Katniss from “The Hunger Games” along with popular celebrity baby choices Harper, Seraphina, and Everly. For boys, Flynn, of “Breaking Bad,” dropped 67 places, followed by Christian of 50 Shades of Grey and Arlo of “Justified.” Even George, as in 2013’s little prince, lost 36 spots.

How To Tell The Difference Between ‘In Like’ And ‘In Love,’ According To Science

We all know there’s a difference between being “in like” with someone and being “in love,” but it’s often hard to tell how the other person feels about you.

A new study about love and lust, recently published in Psychological Science, discovered how to tell if a person is feeling the romantic, long-term will-you-marry-me kind of love or the more common I-just-want-to-have-sex-with-you sexual lust.

It turns out, the answer lies in how they look at you.

Researchers from the University of Chicago conducted two studies on a group of heterosexual undergrads. In the first study, participants looked at a set of 120 photographs of couples and were asked if the photos elicited feelings of romantic love or sexual desire. Sexual desire was defined as an increase in sexual thoughts and fantasies toward a target, whereas love was defined as a sentimental and tender state that made participants long for a union.

Afterwards, the participants were shown the same photographs and asked simply to look at them and think about their feelings. While students were gazing at the photographs, their eye movements were tracked and recorded to determine where on the photo they fixated most and for how long.

In the second study, participants were given 80 photographs of individuals of the opposite sex and asked if they could possibly feel love toward or lust toward them. Again, their eye movements were tracked.

At the end of both studies, the results were pretty clear: “Subjects were more likely to fixate on the face when making decisions about romantic love,” the researchers wrote. “Judgments that involved lust elicited more eye fixations toward the body.”

Indeed, as the authors point out, “Mutual eye gaze is one of the most reliable markers of love between couples.”

So if your S.O. spends more time looking at your face than looking at your butt, odds are good that he or she is in it for the long haul.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West Might Marry In Italy, According To Latest Rumor

The countdown to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding date is underway, which means more sources are coming out of the woodwork offering information on the big day.

At this point, it’s commonly believed that the couple is planning to tie the knot in Paris on May 24, unless you believe “Entertainment Tonight’s” source who says the wedding will actually take place in Florence, Italy.

michelangelo david florence italy

Florence, huh? The next thing you’ll hear is that Kimye is planning on saying “I do” in front of Michelangelo’s David, right? (We’re not saying that’s happening for those of you who don’t understand sarcasm.) Well, according to “ET’s” source, Kimye’s guests can expect a pre-wedding dinner in Paris, but then the couple will fly their guests in private planes to Florence to the actual wedding ceremony, because they obviously want to bring new meaning to the term “destination wedding.”

With just nine days to go until their nuptials, you can be sure there will be many more wedding reports and rumors, and yes, it’s going to be exhausting.

‘Goonies 2’ Is Happening According To Richard Donner

Goonies never say die, and neither do sequel rumors. While discussing the state of Hollywood superhero movies with a paparazzo from TMZ, director Richard Donner let slip that he was making a sequel to “Goonies,” the 1985 adventure film produced by Steven Spielberg.

“We’re doing a sequel,” Donner said while signing autographs for some lucky fans. According to the director, discussions are ongoing with the film’s original cast, which included Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman and Sean Astin.

This isn’t the first time a “Goonies” sequel has been mentioned by Donner. Back in 2010, he told Collider that it was difficult to find a storyline for the second film, which is why he had planned to turn the beloved feature into a musical.

“I don’t think there’d be a sequel. I wouldn’t remake it. If anything it’d be something new and fresh. Hopefully we’re doing this as a musical on Broadway,” Donner said.

In 2011, Donner discussed that Broadway musical in an interview with Movieline. “We’re really trying extraordinarily hard to get it made. It’s a tough road — Broadway is another world totally — and hopefully, probably around September, we’ll be talking a lot more positively,” he said. “We have Tim Long doing the book, and it’s quite good. The process on Broadway is another world. But if we’re going there with ‘Goonies’ — which has such a great following, a great life — it has got to be the right thing. Hopefully we’ll be presenting it to you in the spring of the following year.”

Donner never did get to present the “Goonies” musical, but that didn’t stop the cast from speculating about future “Goonies” installments.

“It will happen,” Astin said in 2012 when asked about a possible “Goonies” sequel by IGN. “I’m 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.”

A Pilgrim’s Process To “The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: DISCORD”

Twenty-seven years ago I had an idea for a play. This week, it opens in Los Angeles at the NoHo Arts Center under the title “The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: DISCORD”. I don’t know how audiences and critics will respond to it, but I know this epic process has enriched my life.

The journey started in June 1986 with a near death asthma attack that landed me in the hospital for a week. Upon my release, I experienced an epiphany like Saul on the road to Damascus. Or Scrooge on Christmas morning. I instantly evolved from cynical comedian to non-affiliated deist. It became the B.C./A.D. moment of my life. I went into a bliss which faded after ten days. Which I did not want to happen. I wanted to permanently become the better man that I had been during that time.

So I began a spiritual journey, making a pledge to the universe that I would henceforth consider anyone who wanted to talk with me about God, have me read their literature or attend a ceremony.

So it was with great interest that, on October 5, 1988, I watched an episode of “A World of Ideas” on PBS. Host Bill Moyers was interviewing Rev. Forrester Church of All Souls Unitarian in New York. And it was here that I learned about the Jefferson Bible.

In 1804 President Jefferson bought two identical copies of the King James Bible. He needed two versions because he would need both sides of the page for his secret project. Then, over three consecutive nights, he took a razor and cut out from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John only the verses he liked. (As you’ll hear, his audacity in condensing Holy Scripture was compounded by what he edited out.) Jefferson then pasted his chosen scraps of scripture into the pages of a blank book. He named his volume The Philosophy Of Jesus of Nazareth. Then, in 1819, while retired at Monticello, Jefferson produced a sequel to called The Life And Morals Of Jesus Of Nazareth. For this more elaborate work, he bought eight Bibles — two each in Latin, Greek, French and English. He then divided a scrapbook’s pages into four columns so one could follow his expanded chronicle of Christ in a single language by reading down or, by reading across, scan a verse in a quartet of tongues.

Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. His heirs sold Life And Morals to the Smithsonian in 1895 for $ 400. In 1904, Congress printed 9,000 copies of it to be given to incoming Senators and Representatives. In 1956, Idaho’s Senator Frank Church received a copy that he then gave to his young son, Forester. Church the younger later credited Jefferson’s work with leading him to Harvard Divinity School and on to a career working in a, well, church. In 1988 he was editing a new edition of Jefferson’s Bible with Yale Divinity School’s Jaroslav Pelikan — and thus the subject came up on Moyers’ program.

Now, I had recently seen the great English actor Alec McCowen perform his one-man show of the unabridged St. Mark’s Gospel. So I thought that there might be a play here. But that’s as far as it went.

In 1996, I was producing Comedy Central’s “Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher.” The show moved that year from New York to Los Angeles. My wife and I got a house near Larchmont Village. There is a bookstore there called Chevalier’s and, one day, I found a book called “The Life Of Our Lord” by Charles Dickens. It turns out that he, too, had written a gospel. His was for his children and he included all of the miracles that Jefferson’s razor had cut out. There was a play: the two of them debate their visions of Christ.

But not so fast. While reading Stephen Mitchell’s excellent “The Gospel According To Jesus,” I discovered the Leo Tolstoy had also abridged the gospels. So I my debating duet became a trio.

One hundred drafts and 50 readings later, the play is coming to fruiting.

And, as I look back on the research that I have done, I’ve come to understand that the careers of Jefferson, Dickens and Tolstoy as something of a trajectory of humanity’s quest for liberty:

In 1776, young slave-owner Thomas Jefferson asserted, in his Declaration of Independence, the “self-evident” truth that all are “created equal” and endowed by God “with certain unalienable rights,” including “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” His words sparked a Revolution.

After which, Jefferson became our Ambassador to France. Just before their Revolution. Which devolved into the Reign of Terror. Which was described in A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.

Dickens became the favorite novelist of young Leo Tolstoy.

Tolstoy’s success as a novelist prompted a suicidal depression. Which launched a spiritual journey. Which culminated with his assertion that the central teaching of Jesus Christ is for us all to “resist not evil.” This was developed, as revolution fermented in Czarist Russia, into the technique of “passive resistance.” Which Tolstoy described in the last letter he ever wrote, in 1910, to a young Mohatma Gandhi.

Gandhi, by passive resistance, liberated India. He inspired a young Martin Luther King, Jr. to apply the philosophy of passive resistance to struggle for African Americans to be able to free ride at the front of a bus, eat at a lunch counter or attend a puclic school.

In his most famous speech, King asserted that the “magnificent” words of Thomas Jefferson and the other “architects of our Republic” were a “promissory note to which every American was to fall heir” and that he and others in the American Civil Rights movement had come to “cash this check.” And a nation’s slumbering conscience slowly but surely awoke. And these rights – deemed “self-evident” and “unalienable” by Jefferson – were increasingly asserted Black, female, gay, brown, red, disabled, yellow and poor Americans.

And, in 2008, a president was elected whose skin color could have, in 1776, made him eligible to have been owned.

Humanity has come a long way. And, in pursuing this project, I have, too.

The Gospel Of Parenthood, According To Tina And Amy

Put down the parenting books, stop Googling, hang up with your mom. Want to know what being a mom (or dad) is really like? Here are 16 undeniable facts about life as a parent, in the words of Golden Globe hosts and goddesses of the universe, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

“I never get to go to movies, because I’m a mom.” — Tina

“Sleep at this point is just a concept, something I’m looking forward to investigating in the future.” — Amy

“You’re just like a human napkin for kids, like, they just wipe their face on you and stuff.”– Tina

“When you’re a twerking mother, balance is really important because you don’t want to go too low and blow out your butt and bust your knee.” — Amy

“It is less dangerous to draw a cartoon of Allah French-kissing Uncle Sam — which, let me make it very clear, I have not done — than it is to speak honestly about [working moms].” — Tina

“There’s a lot of peeing.” — Amy

“I had to get back to work. NBC has me under contract. The baby and I only have a verbal agreement.” — Tina

“Sometimes I forget where I’m driving them to. I do just stop in the middle of road and go, ‘Where are we going? How are we in this car? Who am I dropping off? and Where are we going?’ That happens a lot. It’s a lot of forgetful stuff that every mother has to deal with.” — Amy

“Whatever you do breastfeeding-wise — great. Great. Whatever.” — Tina

“Always remember where you put your kid. Don’t let your kid drive until their feet can reach the pedals. Use the right size diapers… for yourself. And, when in doubt, make funny faces.” — Amy

“Ah, babies! They’re more than just adorable little creatures on whom you can blame your farts.” — Tina

“Sometimes you need to straight up yell at them.” — Amy

“It’s so funny because they’re not strong enough to kill you. And they want to kill you so bad! They can’t kill you. Not yet. Try again in a couple years.” — Tina

“When you’re a stay-at-home mother you have to pretend it’s really boring, but it’s not. It’s enriching and fulfilling, and an amazing experience. And then when you’re a working mother you have to pretend that you feel guilty all day long.” — Amy

“You go through big chunks of time where you’re just thinking, ‘This is impossible — oh, this is impossible.’ And then you just keep going and keep going, and you sort of do the impossible.” — Tina

And for the grand finale: an excerpt from Tina Fey’s “A Mother’s Prayer for Her Daughter”

And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister,
Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends,
For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.

5 Good Reasons To Get Married While You’re Young, According To Research

The average age for Americans getting married has reached a historic high — 27 for women and 29 for men — a jump from the 1990 average marrying age of 23 for women and 26 for men.

While delaying marriage has advantages — a lower divorce rate, higher income for women and fewer and less intense arguments between spouses — studies show there also may be benefits to tying the knot before age 30. (However, there is such a thing as marrying too young. Research shows that marriages beginning when a woman is 18 are twice as likely to end in divorce as those beginning when she is 22.)

Below are five reasons to get married in your 20s.

1. It could make you happier.
According to the National Marriage Project’s 2013 “Knot Yet” report, the highest percentage of people ages 20 to 28 who consider themselves “highly satisfied” with their lives are married, as opposed to single or cohabiting. What’s more, the largest number of women who described their marriage as “very happy” tied the knot when they were 24 to 26. A 2010 study found that “the greatest indicated likelihood of being in an intact marriage of the highest quality is among those who married at ages 22–25.”

2. You’ll make more money (at least if you’re a man).
An analysis of American Community Survey data from 2008 to 2010 revealed that among men in their mid-30s, those who married in their 20s had the highest levels of personal income. Economists have found, in general, that married men earn more than single men — even when you control for other factors like age and education.

3. You’ll have more sex.
Couples who marry in their 20s tend to have more frequent sex than those who marry later. In a 2011 paper, Dana Rotz of Harvard University wrote that “a four year increase in age at marriage is associated with a couple having sex about one time less per month.” What’s more, married people as a whole have more sex than their single counterparts. The sooner you marry, the more time you’ll be spending between the sheets.

4. You’ll drink less alcohol.
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior found that married and engaged young adults reported lower frequency of drunkenness than those who are not in a serious romantic relationship. “Marriage and engagement likely carry with them a heightened sense of responsibility and obligation and a less active social calendar, which leads to less drunkenness,” the study’s authors wrote. Laying off alcohol has many health benefits, including weight loss, better sleep, better skin and a reduced risk of some cancers.

5. There’s nothing to be gained from waiting — if you think you’re ready.
We certainly aren’t advocating a rush to the altar, but if you feel like you’re prepared for that next step, go for it. Research says there’s no advantage to delaying marriage just for the sake of delaying it. A 2010 study by sociologists Norval Glenn and Jeremy Uecker states that “A 25-year-old person who meets an excellent marriage prospect would be ill-advised to pass up that opportunity only because he/she feels not yet at the ideal age for marriage. Furthermore, delaying marriage beyond the mid-twenties will lead to the loss during a portion of young adulthood of any emotional and health benefits that a good marriage would bring.”
