Net-a-porter on Keeping Exclusive Capsules Actually Exclusive

CAPSULE CRAZY–Another day, another “exclusive” capsule collection. If that adjective fails to excite any longer, you’d be joining a growing set of voices in that view.
Conscious of consumer fatigue and a saturation point for limited edition products, Net-a-porter is trying to reinvent the future of an exclusive capsule.
Calling it “a work in progress”,  Elizabeth von der Goltz, global buying director for Net-a-porter said, “We’ve done them for such a long time. All of them almost have to be brands–we can’t say we don’t [let them]–but we like to be the only retailer you’re doing an exclusive collection for the year.”
She continued: “We’re seeing so much out there it’s getting a bit noisy to keep it really special. Every design needs to be unique and different. It’s not just a coloration, it [needs to be] different from the past seasons,” she said.
Since von der Goltz joined Net-a-porter, collaboration highlights include the debut of a Balenciaga collection, the Fendi logo project and securing a role as Kith’s exclusive online retail partner for women’s.
“There’s so much competition than when [Net-a-porter] started,” von der Goltz said. “The number one focus is to offer the best curation, the best edit, and in the markets that we’re strong,

Pigs Are Flying And Piers Morgan Actually Apologized To Ariana Grande

Pigs are flying, the temperatures in hell are subzero, and Piers Morgan actually admitted he was wrong. Literally anything can happen in 2017, folks.

After a terror attack at Ariana Grande’s Manchester concert claimed the lives of 22 people in May, the British TV presenter did as he is wont to do, i.e. stuck his foot in his mouth on social media. Instead of showing *gulp* actual human empathy, Morgan criticized the pop star for not visiting the victims in the hospital and flying home to be with family.

Of course, Grande not only returned to the city to surprise and sit with her injured fans, but she also hosted the benefit concert One Love Manchester, which raised over $ 3 million dollars for British Red Cross’ Manchester Emergency Fund

The 23-year-old, along with a slate of performers, including Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Coldplay, took the stage with a message of love and unity a day after another attack in the heart of London

“I thought Ariana Grande was wrong to fly off after . But tonight she’s putting on a fabulous show,” Morgan wrote on Sunday.

“I misjudged you & I apologise. You’re an admirable young woman & this is a magnificent night. Respect,” he added in another tweet, alongside a photo of Grande embracing a choir girl who performed with her at the show.

Many were quick to react on social media to Morgan’s admission of wrongdoing, considering his track record for spouting off controversial and damaging opinions with zero remorse.

One apology down, so many more to go.

Happy Endings Abound In The ‘Love Actually’ Mini-Sequel

Love Actually” is still all around us, thanks to the mini-sequel that aired Thursday during NBC’s Red Nose Day charity special. We are now blessed with an update on most of the characters from the 2003 Christmas hit that continues to inspire obsession and vitriol around the world.

It’s happy endings (mostly) all around. The couples formed in the film ― Natalie (Martine McCutcheon) and the prime minister (Hugh Grant), Jamie (Colin Firth) and Aurelia (Lucia Moniz), even Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Joanna (Olivia Olson) ― are still together. Mark (Andrew Lincoln) is still showing up at Juliet’s (Keira Knightley) door while Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) awaits her return, but now Mark is married to Kate Moss. Billy Mack’s (Bill Nighy) manager has died, but Billy is still recording half-baked publicity singles and giving cantankerous radio interviews. Rufus (Rowan Atkinson) is methodically packaging gifts at Walgreens, because product placement is real, and Daniel is inquiring about Sam’s life on that same waterfront bench (sans Claudia Schiffer). The happiest ending of all goes to Sarah (Laura Linney), who’s bagged a new fellow played by Patrick Dempsey.

Cast members missing from the roster: Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman (who died in 2016), Rodrigo Santoro, Kris Marshall and the rest of Colin’s crew, and Martin Freeman and Joanna Page, who played the flirty body doubles.

You can watch the full 16-minute bit above.

12 Celebrity Baby Names That Are Actually Quite Nice

Nameberry is honoring the veteran celebrity moms ― the ones who have gracefully combined high-profile careers with parenting and added another baby to the mix since last May.

These stylish mamas have chosen a mix of traditional and surprising names for their new additions. Plenty of these could prove influential in the upcoming years. What are your favorites? From Amalia to Zen, there’s something here to suit every style.

Amalia

Natalie Portman made headlines when she named her firstborn Aleph in 2011. Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Recently she and husband Benjamin Millepied added a daughter to their family. Amalia is a slightly more conventional choice, but sticks with the A theme. With Amelia near the top of the popularity lists, cousin Amalia promises to inspire.

Caleb

Kerry Washington has stuck with a winning strategy for naming her two children with husband Nnamdi Asomugha. New baby Caleb Kelechi joined big sister Isabelle Amarachi last October. Both first names are mainstream favorites, but the “Scandal” star and her NFL husband chose middles that honor his Nigerian heritage.

Daisy

Olivia Wilde impressed us all when she and husband Jason Sudeikis named their son Otis Alexander. They did it again, with daughter Daisy Josephine’s name in October. The first names are vintage and nickname-proof, while the middles feel longer and slightly more traditional. Otis re-entered the U.S. Top 1000 following his birth announcement; Daisy already ranks in the Top 200, but might also get a boost.

Dimitri

After Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher named their daughter Wyatt Isabelle, we knew their son’s name would be equally unexpected. Sure enough, the couple went with Dimitri Portwood for their November 2016 new arrival. Ashton has shared that Mila suggested the name, but not explained why. Since Mila was born in the Ukraine, it feels like a great heritage choice for the couple.

Hugo

Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas might be the best boy namers of our time. Firstborn son Oliver Finlay arrived in 2014. The “Once Upon a Time” stars added son Hugo Wilson in June 2016. Oliver has raced up the popularity charts in recent years. Now his little brother’s name seems likely to do the same. The subtle connection between an O-starting and an O-ending name links the boys nicely, too.

Ines

After bestowing family name James on a daughter in 2014, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds surprised us with their second daughter’s name, too. Instead of a borrowed-from-the-boys pick, the famous family opted for a traditional Spanish choice, Ines. A form of Agnes also spelled Inez, it was quite stylish in the US circa 1910. No word on why they made the choice, but Ines feels like one to watch.

Lula

Liv Tyler knows what it means to grow up with a trendsetting name, and now her children will, too. She welcomed firstborn Milo back in 2004. Now she and David Gardner are parents to son Sailor Gene, born in 2015, and July 2016 arrival Lula Rose. Vintage Lula fits in with Lucy and Louisa, an early 20th century favorite all but forgotten until now.

Major

Like Natalie and Benjamin, Eva Amurri and husband Kyle Martino stuck with their favorite initial for their children. Daughter Marlowe arrived in August 2014. The family added son Major in October 2016. Eva has talked about sticking with her instincts and choosing unusual names that feel right for her family. Major makes for a big name, but like many bold word names, it feels very current.

Onyx

Alanis Morissette went with the short and meaningful Ever Imre for her son back in 2010. Now she and Mario Treadway have added a daughter to their family with an equally brief and bold name: Onyx Solace. The double word name fits nicely with big brother Ever. While gemstone names like Ruby and Pearl are familiar for girls, Onyx tends to lean masculine – at least for now.

Phoenix

Vanessa Lachey and husband Nick have traveled the U.S. with their children’s names. Eldest son is Camden, followed by daughter Brooklyn. In December 2016, they added son Phoenix. While it sounds like the couple is borrowing from the map, that’s not quite the case ― though Camden was inspired by an LA street and Brooklyn by New York. This last time, Vanessa just plain liked the fast-rising and meaning-rich name.

Sally

Audra McDonald’s firstborn was already a teenager when she welcomed her second. The Tony-winning actress named her elder daughter Zoe Madeline, a choice that proved very stylish in recent years. Last October, she and husband Will Swenson added daughter Sally James to the mix. We know that James is a white hot middle name pick for girls. Is Sally the next Sadie?

Zen

Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego added a third son to their family earlier this year. Zen joined brothers Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio, twins born in 2014. Zoe and Marco have opted for modern names with roots, unexpected and seldom heard but still very wearable. All three choices could prove influential in the coming years. What we’d love to know: Zen’s middle name!

Lyft made these goofy wearables as a prank but they're actually kind of cool

Lyft made these goofy wearables as a prank but they're actually kind of coolWould you believe it if Lyft rolled out an actual, physical product to hail a ride? A one-use wearable, giving you streamlined access to all the service's cars at the lyft (lolz) of your thumb? You shouldn't believe it — well, not completely. The ride-hailing app is currently shilling Mono, a wearable with some legitimately cool specs: it has BLE tech to pair with your phone, a micro-controller synched with the Lyft API that reads gyroscope and accelerometer data to request rides, and motion-triggered LED confirmation indicators to let you know your trip status without having to check your phone.   Just stick your thumb in the air wearing the Mono, Lyft claims, and you'll soon be ferried on your way.  SEE ALSO: Lyft just came out with its biggest innovation yet: buses But you'll (probably) never see someone rocking a Mono to get a ride home after a night out on the town — it's April Fools' Day season again, and the wearable is Lyft's idea of a viral prank, designed to confound the internet and get us all buzzing. The only problem is, Lyft didn't just make a joke prototype for a one-off photoshoot — the company went all the way in, creating actual working Mono devices.  Sure, we have all the hallmarks of a viral prank campaign — a slightly ridiculous concept that's
just believable enough, especially with the hyped-up videos and web presence to back it up. But bringing Mono to life makes it less a prank and more a one-off promotion, like Pizza Hut's pie-ordering sneakers for March Madness.  We're giving away 5 Monos! Post a photo of the Mono on Twitter/Instagram tagging @lyft, #GetMono, and #Sweepstakes. https://t.co/O58NUdhPSh pic.twitter.com/jb4ZjqYaIY — Lyft (@lyft) March 30, 2017 It's almost like Snapchat Spectacles on a small scale: a wearable created to give users a physical extension of an experience typically tethered to smartphones. Mono's little more than a novelty item — obviously, no one's
really gonna walk around with their thumb in the air more than once or twice for kicks — but it is kinda cool looking and, dare I say it, fun.  That's what April Fool's is all about, right? We'll cut Lyft some slack here for the full-out effort even with the botched delivery — just as long as they don't immediately start bragging about how #woke hailing a car with your thumb can be.  WATCH: I tried a self-driving car in London and lived to tell the tale

The ‘Love Actually’ Mini-Sequel Won’t Include Alan Rickman Or Emma Thompson

Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson’s storyline was perhaps the most heartbreaking of the 2003 ensemble “Love Actually.” When Harry (Rickman) attracts attention from his young secretary ― spoiler! ― his wife and the devoted mother of his children, Karen (Thompson), finds out after realizing a necklace he’d bought wasn’t a gift for her. Instead, she’d received instead a decidedly unsexy Joni Mitchell CD, and their marriage is left strained.

Unfortunately for fans, the upcoming mini-sequel to the hit film won’t fill us in on what Harry and Karen have been up to.

According to director Richard Curtis, the new script won’t include Thompson or a tribute to Rickman, who died in 2016, per Digital Spy. It’s just too tough.

“You know, dealing with Alan is very complicated,” Curtis told the Press Association, so a tribute is “not really” part of the plan. He also confirmed the actress won’t be able to participate.

The project, announced last week, will be made in celebration of Red Nose Day, a biennial event that supports the British charity Comic Relief that Curtis co-founded in 1985. Original cast members including Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Andrew Lincoln, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Rowan Atkinson are all set to appear ― so at least we’ll find out what happened after that creepy nighttime cue-card scene between Juliet (Knightley) and her husband’s best friend, Mark. (Lincoln, who played Mark, has said his character “is a stalker.”)

“It’ll certainly be a nostalgic moment getting back together and recreating their characters 14 years later,” Curtis said in a statement last week.

It’s set to air March 24 on BBC One and May 25 on NBC.

Sorry, You Don’t Actually Have A Year To Send A Wedding Gift

You may have heard somewhere that guests have up to a year after the wedding to send a gift to the newlywed couple.

These days, though, etiquette experts insist that a year is way, way too long to wait.

“A year is a long time and a lot can change!” Amber Harrison of Wedding Paper Divas told The Huffington Post. “For example, it is totally possible that the couple might be making a big cross-country move or welcoming a new baby one year after the wedding, in which case receiving a wedding gift might feel out of place.”

So how long is the window, really?

“Guidance for proper timing of the gift is not as clear cut,” Harrison added. “Gifts are welcome and appropriate at any time before the wedding and even at the reception. It is perfectly fine for gifts to also arrive after the wedding, but it should be soon enough that the wedding is still top of mind. There are always exceptions to the rule, but sending a gift more than a month or two after the wedding is probably too long.”

There you have it.

Woman Arrested in Craigslist Rape Fantasy Plot Was Actually Framed by Ex-Boyfriend’s Wife, Prosecutors Allege

A California woman who authorities claimed had recruited men on Craigslist to rape her ex-boyfriend’s wife has been cleared of all charges related to the case — and officials allege the man’s wife herself was behind the whole thing.

Michelle Hadley, of Ontario, was arrested in July, accused of harassing Angela Diaz, 31, and sending men to her home to engage in “rape fantasies.” Hadley was exonerated on Monday and Diaz is facing a slew of charges as a result of the twist in the case.

“Ms. Hadley is an innocent victim of a diabolical scheme,” Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas announced in a statement.

Rackauckus alleged Diaz went to great lengths to frame Hadley by allegedly falsely reporting a rape claim and posing as Hadley in emails and on Craigslist.

Diaz has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, falsely reporting crimes, perjury, grand theft and forgery, among other charges. She was arrested by Phoenix, Arizona, police on Friday.

Hadley, who had been released from custody in October nearly three months after her arrest, became emotional outside a Fullerton courthouse on Monday after she was officially exonerated.

“Obviously, this has been a huge nightmare for me, probably the most traumatic experience of my life,” Hadley said, according to the Associated Press. “I’m glad it’s finally over, and I can move on.”

Diaz Allegedly Sent Herself Threatening Emails

The ordeal began in June when Diaz allegedly posed as Hadley on Craigslist and sent responses to people who had responded to “rape fantasy” ads. She allegedly reported to Anaheim police that men arrived at her home to engage in the act. Prosecutors alleged the men were intercepted by police. (The men have not been publicly identified.)

Authorities alleged Diaz sent herself threatening emails, using “violent language” and including pictures to portray herself as a rape victim. Rackauckus also alleged that Diaz falsely reported that a man attempted to rape her in her garage.

Prosecutors said that, for about a month, Diaz allegedly told police Hadley had been threatening to have her raped and had threatened to kill her and what she represented as her unborn child. However, prosecutors alleged Diaz faked the pregnancy.

Hadley’s arrest made headlines, with details of the case garnering widespread attention. But Diaz’s alleged plan soon fell through as authorities learned the threats and Craigslist solicitations allegedly came from Diaz’s phone and condo.

Authorities have not determined a motive for Diaz’s alleged actions. But the women are linked by Ian Diaz, an agent with the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the AP. Prosecutors have said they have no evidence indicating Ian was involved.

It is unclear whether Diaz has entered a plea or acquired a lawyer. Prosecutors said she faces a maximum sentence of 12 years and eight months in prison along with 11 years in county jail.

The exhibition runs through May 16th. For more information click here.

Resolution 2: This year, I should really learn something more about New York City.

2017-01-06-1483736969-5158617-GayGothamEventHero.jpg

Through February 26, you can learn about the city’s role in creating a place for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities during the 20th century. The Museum of the City of New York’s exhibit Gay Gotham explains how much of the work in the arts of the United States we accept as classic examples today were created by these visionaries who also just happened to be non-heterosexual. For more information click here.

Resolution 3: I want learn how artists make work that is relevant to the world around them.

2017-01-06-1483737081-9438679-StudioMuseum.gif

In the 1970’s many artists chose to focus exclusively on social issues of the day. The Studio Museum in Harlem has a powerful exhibit called Circa 1970 displaying these pieces in various media. Consider how this past year has looked in terms of artistic achievement and compare it to that earlier time. The exhibition runs through March 5, and if you haven’t been before, it affords a great opportunity to take in this museum, founded in 1968 “…for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.” The Studio Museum in Harlem is on 125th Street, just east of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. For more information click here.

Resolution 4: I should waste less and recycle more.

2017-01-06-1483737210-9854389-CooperHewitt.jpg

Through April 16, see how designers and business owners handle the issues of waste and reuse at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Scraps: Fashion, Textiles, and Creative Reuse shows that through innovative thinking and practice, waste at all levels of production can be reduced to near zero. It will definitely help you remember to take your own worn out textiles to the recycle locations at farmers’ markets around the city. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is on Fifth Avenue at 91st Street. For more information click here.

Resolution 5: I want to appreciate the finer things in life.

2017-01-06-1483738987-1257054-Frick.jpg

Visit the Frick Collection’s exhibit of Pierre Gouthière: Virtuoso Gilder at the French Court through February 19 and marvel at the skills used to create objects that decorated the court residences of the kings of France. Then go home and look at your chipped Ikea furniture. For more information click here.

Resolution 6: I need to do more to support conservation issues.

2017-01-06-1483739079-1642567-MAD.jpg

Anybody can go scuba diving and see coral reefs in all their glory. But it takes a creative mind to actually make a coral reef replica (in crochet, no less) and get it displayed in a museum. Visit the Museum of Arts and Design at 2 Columbus Circle to see Crochet Coral Reef: TOXIC SEAS and admire the craftsmanship. This exhibition, a product of sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim and their Institute for Figuring, runs through January 22. For more information click here. Then text a few bucks to a reputable conservation charity.

Resolution 7: I should travel.

2017-01-06-1483739190-3454442-Rubin.jpg

Then start your journey at The Rubin Museum of Art and their exhibit Masterworks of Himalayan Art. Among other things, you can go on a virtual pilgrimage to Mount Wutai, a sacred site in Buddhist teaching, located in Northern China. Start a bank account for travel with automatic deposits from your paycheck. The Rubin Museum of Art is off Seventh Avenue at 17th Street. This exhibition runs through February 6. For more information click here.

Resolution 8: I want to learn from the best.

2017-01-06-1483739283-9567649-martinscorsesemomi04720x480.jpg

Take a trip out to Queens to see the exhibit Martin Scorsese at the Museum of the Moving Image. The memorabilia from childhood to his work on such classic films as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Gangs of New York, to name just a few, is impressive and gives insight into the creative process of this giant of American cinema. After you’re done, go see his new film Silence. The museum is at 36-01 35 Avenue in Astoria, and is easily accessible by the R/M and N/W subway lines. The exhibition runs through April 23. For more information click here.

7 ‘If We’re Not Married By…’ Pacts That Actually Ended In Marriage

In “How I Met Your Mother,” Ted and Robin make an agreement that if they’re still single at 40, they’ll just marry each other.

Spoiler alert: They do eventually end up together (with a whole lot of ups and downs in between). But to our surprise, this kind of thing isn’t just a pop culture trope; it happens in real life too.

Read on for seven stories of real couples who made similar “if we’re not married by…” pacts and actually ended up together. Some didn’t wait until the agreed-upon age, but that doesn’t make their love stories any less sweet.

1. We made the pact as a joke in high school. At 30, we tied the knot.

“Brittany and I were in each other’s lives longer than my memory will go back. We were always good friends, but got really close in middle school and high school. Sometime in high school we started joking that if we were both single at 30, then we would get married. At 24 we started hanging out a lot. By 25 we were in an official relationship. And on our 30th birthday (yes, we share that) we were married. We didn’t force anything because of the pact we made. It all happened as it was supposed to. We celebrated our first ‘birthiversary’ earlier this month, and we are still madly in love!” ― Byron

2. After some heart break, we made the marriage pact in jest. Now we’re 30 and planning a wedding.

“Rey and I met online and became good friends when we were both 23, and since we lived 2000 miles apart, it was only a friendship. After each of us had a few bad relationships and shared mutual heartaches, we jokingly made our pact; If by 30, if we were still single, I’d take the leap of faith, move across country and we would date for a year or two before getting married. We both tried dating others, but by 28, we reconnected through social media. Our friendship grew and when the pact was mentioned again, we both embraced it. I moved to Texas in 2014, and now at 30, we are happily engaged and planning a wedding for the spring of 2018.” ― Heather W.

3. We decided on age 33, but destiny couldn’t wait that long.

“Jason and I met in high school in 1996 (we were 17) and ended up going to senior prom together since neither of us had dates. We decided that we were such good friends that if we weren’t married to other people in 2011 by the time we turned 33 (our birthdays are five days apart) that we’d marry each other. Fast forward to 1997 when we had our first child before getting married on Valentine’s Day in 2000. We were both so scared of finding ‘the one’ so young that we fought it, but fate had plans for us and they couldn’t wait until 2011! We now have two children, 16 years of marriage and are looking forward to old age together. Even when we are angry with each other, we can find a laugh because our friendship is so strong. It’s pretty damn awesome.” ― Dawn-Maia S.

4. We agreed that if we were single at 30, we’d get together. At 34, we were married.

“I first met Burnill in fourth grade and didn’t like him one bit. When we were 13 we met again at a skating rink while I was on a date with his friend and he was on a blind date with my friend. We eventually started spending time together, and we became a couple at 16. We broke up and lost touch for about a year after, and ran into each other again when we were 18. That’s when we made our pact that if we weren’t both married at 30 then we would get married. After this I didn’t see him for about nine years until he found me on Facebook. At the time I was married and had two kids. About six years later, I was single and he contacted me again via Facebook. We got married at 34 and have one beautiful little boy together, along with my two older children.” ― Rae M.

5. We started out as best friends with an “if we’re still single at 30…” agreement. Six months later, we were husband and wife.

“My best friend of 10 years said to me one day in a group conversation that if we weren’t with anyone by the time she was 30 (she was 25 at the time) that we would have to be together. As beautiful as she was/is, I never made a move because I used to date her best friend, so I thought the ‘girl code’ would halt my advances. Sure enough, once she said that, I was like, ‘Hold up, she’s possibly into me?!’ So I made the move! Six months after that conversation, we got married. It was a fairly easy transition. Currently married for three years with two children. I’m loving every moment of it.”― Korderius D.

6. We made the pact in college. Two years later we were married ― long before age 40.

“Sarah and I became best friends after working as EMTs on our college ambulance service. We were never single at the same time, so when I was 20 and she was 22 we made a pact to get married when I was 40 if we were both single. I made it to age 22 before asking her to marry me. Our wedding was in 2013 and it was a ton of fun ― she’s a private pilot and I’m in the Air Force so we had a formation flight before exchanging vows on the taxiway at the small airport where she learned to fly.” ― Ahmed H.

7. We agreed to be each other’s backup spouse if we weren’t married by 30. Just a few years later, we got married.

“I met Sam in 2010 during our freshman year of college. At the time we were both seeing other people, but we became very good friends very quickly mostly because of our mutual interest in self deprecation. Sometime that year we were talking about the inevitability of our current partners giving up on us and decided we should probably have some sort of contingency plan so we didn’t die miserable and alone. We decided if we were both single when we were 30, we would give up on love and resign ourselves to lives of senseless banter. She and I were 18 and 19, respectively. We decided we did actually love each other, so we moved our timetable up a bit and got married in April of 2013.” ― Ethan W.

Love Actually: Don’t Fast Forward To The Happy Ending

One of the many characters in Love Actually is a widower named Daniel (Liam Neeson.) While delivering his wife Joanne’s eulogy, he gives us a hint at her sense of humor:

“Jo and I had uh, a lot of time to prepare for this moment. Some of her, uh, requests – for instance, that I should bring Claudia Schiffer as my date to the funeral – I was confident she expected me to ignore.”

In a scene shortly following the funeral, Daniel cries in front of his married friend Karen (Emma Thompson.) Karen responds be telling him:

“Get a grip, people hate sissies. No-one’s ever gonna shag you if you cry all the time.”

In the movie, that bit of dialogue is not meant to paint Karen as being a bad friend. Rather, this is how the movie actually sees the world: Only wimps have emotions, real men don’t cry, and it’s a widower’s JOB to get laid.

And sure enough, by the end of the movie, the widower is successfully flirting with (and beginning a relationship with) Carol, a women who happens to look a lot like Claudia Schiffer (perhaps because she’s being played by Claudia Schiffer.) The timeline between the widower burying his wife and hitting it off with a supermodel? Five weeks.

Five weeks. That’s the timeline movies like Love Actually have for grief. After that, it’s time to give the audience what they really want, namely the excitement of seeing a “boy meets girl” moment. Joanne, who is never even seen alive during the movie, was only written into existence to set up a surprise romance. It’s suggested that Joanne suffered through a long illness, but her real cause of death was narrative efficiency.

There is a shocking amount of pressure placed on real-life widows and widowers to “get back out there.” People will actually start talking to the bereaved about dating as early as the funeral. Love Actually, The Holiday, and other movies that use an off-screen dead spouse to help set up an eventual “meet cute” romantic-comedy moment are only contributing to the problem.

People’s lives do not follow narrative arcs. When you or somebody you know faces a personal loss, respect that loss for what it is. Let it be a self-contained terrible moment in time, not a mere set up for something wonderful that you want to believe is just around the corner. Don’t try to fast forward to the happy ending.

A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Could Actually Happen

More “Game of Thrones” is coming … maybe.

We’ve heard rumors of a “Game of Thrones” movie or prequel for years now. (Years!) And apparently HBO is still pursuing that dream.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the network’s programming president Casey Bloys says HBO is stills in talks with author George R.R. Martin about another series.

Bloys said, “I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks.”

The programming president didn’t specify which parts of Martin’s works could be adapted, but he added that HBO is exploring different “areas.”

What could those “areas” be? Let’s speculate, Crows.

Besides his A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the inspiration for “Game of Thrones,” Martin has his Dunk and Egg novellas, which are prequels to the series. Plus, there is a lot of backstory with Robert’s Rebellion that fans want to see. Robert’s Rebellion is the war that put Robert Baratheon on the throne and eventually led to the craziness Westeros is going through now.

In any case, HBO is fighting to bring more “Thrones” to your faces.

As far as the possibility of expanding “Game of Thrones” Season 8 from the meager 6 episodes we’re reportedly getting, Bloys said, “I’ll take as much as we can get.”

In other words, your watch hasn’t ended just yet.

No, Jon Snow! Aren’t you listening? Not yet!

Whoa, Elsa Might Actually Be The Villain In ‘Frozen’

Remember how the people of Arendelle freaked out when they found out Elsa had ice powers in “Frozen“? And you’re all like, “Chill, people. She’s cool.”

Well, what if they actually had a point?

The latest video from YouTubers BloodBlitz Comedy imagines what it’d be like if Elsa actually was the monster everyone thought she was. And the girl is scary.

There’s definitely a lot more bloodshed in the vid than we remember in the movie, but the YouTubers also made a video turning Harry Potter into a villain, so at least Elsa has some good bad company.

WSJ Columnist Says She Has Proof Latino Voters Actually Like Donald Trump

Although a Gallup poll released this week shows that Donald Trump is far and away the most disliked Republican presidential candidate among Latino voters, one conservative columnist says she may have found signs to the contrary, courtesy of some anecdotal evidence.

In her column on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan cited a conversation with a Dominican friend to explain why she thinks Trump’s “staying power in the polls reflects a change in the electorate.”

Something is going on, some tectonic plates are moving in interesting ways. My friend Cesar works the deli counter at my neighborhood grocery store. He is Dominican, an immigrant, early 50s, and listens most mornings to a local Hispanic radio station, La Mega, on 97.9 FM. Their morning show is the popular “El Vacilón de la Mañana,” and after the first GOP debate, Cesar told me, they opened the lines to call-ins, asking listeners (mostly Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican) for their impressions. More than half called in to say they were for Mr. Trump. Their praise, Cesar told me a few weeks ago, dumbfounded the hosts. I later spoke to one of them, who identified himself as D.J. New Era. He backed Cesar’s story. “We were very surprised,” at the Trump support, he said. Why? “It’s a Latin-based market!”

There you have it, folks.

18 Real Things Donald Trump Has Actually Said About Women

Donald Trump claims to “cherish” women, but his actions — and words — suggest otherwise.

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly called him out on his sexist behavior during the GOP debate on August 6, reminding him: “You have called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs’, ‘dogs’, ‘slobs’, and ‘disgusting animals.”

Trump laughed off the question, claiming he doesn’t “have the time for total political correctness.” Later, Trump called Kelly a “bimbo” and said that he “didn’t recognize” the remarks she was referencing.

Well, we recognize them.

Trump has consistently insulted, belittled, sexualized and stereotyped women. He has also taken the time to personally insult individual notable women like Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie O’Donnell, Cher, Bette Midler, and others.

Here are 18 of the most outrageous things Trump has said about women:

Am I Actually a Lion or a Sheep in a Lion’s Body?

As I fell down the rabbit hole of Instagram late one night, as many of us unhealthily do, I found myself staring at the pictures of people who once were friends, good friends, and I couldn’t shake a feeling of contempt, annoyance and a general disdain.

One photo led to a different person’s profile, which lead to another photo, which led to another person’s profile, and before I knew it, I forgot how I had even gotten to the profile I landed on, especially because I in fact do not follow any of these people. However, curiosity killed the cat, or lion as this story would have it, and I always find it beyond fascinating how people we tend to not enjoy seem to find one another. My guess is they share a similar quality that we’d actively not wanted to be a part of, and like attracts like.

Sitting in the dark, staring at the glowing screen on my phone, the recently popular saying, “A lion doesn’t lose sleep over the opinion of sheep,” came to mind. Here I was a lion, and there they were, a herd of sheep. Yet, I was up later than I wanted to be, and it was in fact because of people I would relate to as sheep.

However, something about that saying felt somewhat unfair, not quite right, and made a lion somehow better than sheep. And while I do not necessarily like all these people because of past interactions, I find it healthier to let things go, and not think myself better than anyone else.

Sure, lions are technically more alpha to sheep, and in a head to head match a lion would greatly out preform a sheep in every possible way, but who’s to say that the lion doesn’t care, or is in fact better? That’s what the statement is implying after all, right?

We’ve all seen the amazingly adorable, and somewhat astonishing videos of animals that shouldn’t be getting along, interacting in such friendly manners, gently playing with each other, caring for one another, and cuddling. There’s the hippo and the dog, the chicken and the cat, the baby deer and the lion.

It was this last duo that seemed to relate somewhat perfectly to what I had been pondering, and got me thinking. How were the two able to interact in such “unnatural” ways? What could possibly be different about this interaction? How had they “befriended” each other?

Then it hit me: Hunger.

Hunger and thirst are what motivate us to act in such “animalistic” ways, and can completely change the interactions that we have. When we aren’t hungry, or hungry for something someone else has we tend to play nice as a whole. Both animal kingdom and mankind are able to shift primal forces into civilized needs.

While a deer and a sheep are in fact not the same, the idea correlates quite easily that normally we’d expect the lion to simply kill and eat the deer, or sheep, but when the lion is not hungry, she sees the deer differently, more complex, more equal.

Primal urges are replaced with an intricate thought.

I don’t know what came of the two animals, but considering this interaction opened my eyes in two specific ways, and helped me identify why I had such a negative reaction to people I once cared deeply for.

Firstly, I had felt hurt because I had been left behind by sheep, a herd, a group of people. Secondly lions are more than meat hungry death eaters.

As I pondered lions and sheep and deer, oh my, I began to understand why my emotions had initially been so strong, and why that specific quote can feel quite empowering. Ultimately, it’s because no one likes to feel left behind.

Here I was late at night, unexpectedly staring at my ex, my ex-friends, and a really promising, but bad first date all hanging out together, appearing to be happy. They had created their herd. Whether or not they’re all friends, in fact happy, or just using the same person for an awesome beach house is unknown to me, but I understand that being a part of a group, or a herd, if you will, feels safer, better, more comfortable.

As I realized the deeper emotions of hurt, loss, and a tinge of sadness I realized it was time to turn off my phone, and to not wish these guys anything but happiness, and if they had found it together than great.

I also came to the realization that while I may feel left out at that one trivial moment late night, I was in fact not alone, and like the lion far more complex. I had allowed myself the moment of hunger, but realized I was not hungry for anything they had at all. I was and am beyond full.

By being left behind by the large herd of sheep, I have been able to find my smaller, but stronger pride of lions. I have been able to satisfy my hunger, and at moments even play nice with the sheep. In general, I have been able to understand that it is ok to still be a lion, and care about the opinion of sheep, but not let it be what affects me, drives me and keeps me up a night.

My pride of lions is one of strength, honor, understanding and a civilized sense of hunger. We treat others as equals, look past our primal thirst and take pride in our pride.

Ultimately, what I have realized is that we aren’t just lions or just sheep, but as we interact with each other, we have the opportunity to take the courage of the lion and marry it with the gentleness of a sheep to move forwards both proud and humble. For if one can be such differing ideas at once then they truly live a life of love.

Rihanna’s Met Gala Dress Designer Didn’t Actually Want Her to Wear It

rihanna

Chinese couturier Guo Pei became an international fashion superstar the moment Rihanna took her first step on the Met Gala red carpet in May—but if the designer had her way, RiRi wouldn’t have worn it at all.

“I actually didn’t think the dress was the right one for her,” Guo told WWD. “I thought it would be too heavy and too hot, but she was so touched the moment she put it on.”

Bad-gal RiRi knows what works for her, though. The embroidered cape with fur trim and mile-long train was arguably the most photographed—and talked-about—dress of fashion’s biggest night. Pei revealed that the cape weighs 55 pounds and took nearly two years to make. Talk about conviction!

Why Sharing Your Struggles Actually Makes You Stronger: A Lesson From Terry Crews

I was coming home after dropping off my daughter at school and heard Terry Crews being interviewed on the radio. I knew he was an actor on Brooklyn Nine Nine, (I have never watched but my hubby and son love it). I knew he was a comedian and the cool Old Spice guy. Other than that I didn’t know much about him.The DJ introduced Terry by listing all of the projects Terry is involved with these days. The DJ asked how he had time to be involved with so many projects.

Terry said, “I am going to be completely honest, I used to be addicted to porn. Addiction takes a lot of time.” He explained that now that he’s not addicted to porn, he has time to do productive and fulfilling things. He went on to talk about all of his failures. He said no one had failed more than him, and that is why he succeeds now. Terry said that people are living way to safe and you can’t be scared of being you. Take risks.

He was so authentic and real. He talked about his addiction to porn almost cost him his marriage. All of this at 8:00 0.a.m on a morning radio station! They kept trying to make jokes about porn addiction and he kept being real. He did not let them make light of it, regardless how hard they tried.

One minute into his interview, I wanted to know everything about him.I was not expecting to hear this kind of raw truth during a morning radio show interview, with a comedian of all people. It was so refreshing! I was instantly drawn to him. I felt better about myself. I have been feeling like a bit of a failure lately. Somehow his truth let me know I was going to be OK, because he was.

You don’t hear many celebrities being honest about their failures, daily challenges or addictions. Reality is a bit skewed these days. Facebook and social media have become a place of posting about your kids amazing accomplishments, your perfectly cooked risotto at the hottest restaurant in town or your latest vacation to a tropical island. It focuses on mostly our accomplishments and how great our lives are. Those things are all great, and there is another side of real life that is not always so shiny and glittery.

On the other hand we can have really hard days, most of us struggle with something. Yet we don’t talk about our struggles or challenges. We don’t share our hardships. That would make us weak. That might push people away. We question — would my friends still love me if they new my inner struggles and weaknesses? You generally don’t see people post, “Just got back from marriage counseling, it was a hard but productive session”. You don’t see mom post a picture of her baby screaming it’s head off a with the caption, “Today I hate being a mom”. We don’t tell the mom at the park, “I screamed at my 3 year old today and I scared myself”.

Even though these are realities, people prefer to only show the happy shiny facade.
We are afraid to share our failures. Why? It seems like we feel if we post about our amazing lives people will be drawn to us and like us more. We will feel validated that we are important and people will love us. Ironically I have found the exact opposite to be true. We need to be real, raw, authentic. People want to connect and we all have baggage, struggles, weaknesses.

I have made a conscious decision over the past year to live and share my authentic life, warts, failures and all. Maybe that feels gutsy but the payoff is worth it to me. I am who I am. Sure I can glamorize the good stuff and brush the bad stuff under the rug, but that’s not real life. Ironically, I have found that when I share my hardships with raising a daughter with bipolar disorder, or how I have been in marriage counseling for 1 ½ years, people lean in. They open up to me about their lives.

I am blown away by how many friends/clients I have that also have bipolar disorder and have never told anyone. They talk to me about their original struggles with it and how they are living awesome productive lives now. They tell me not give up and it will get better. They check in on me. If I didn’t share, I would feel so alone, so isolated. I am supported because I share. I am not alone because I share. It is so freeing when you share your truth and your friends and family still love you. You don’t have to feel like a liar or a failure. You can’t fail when you are you.

I encourage everyone to embrace who you are. Learn from Terry Crews. We don’t need to feel guilt or shame from our failures, we need to embrace them, share them and move on from them. Celebrate the good stuff and don’t be afraid to share your struggles. You will be amazed at the doors it opens and the support it brings.

Listening To Heavy Metal May Actually Make You Calmer, Study Finds

Apparently, Ozzy Osbourne may hold the key to happiness.

A recent study has found that “extreme” music genres — including heavy metal, emo, punk and screamo — may actually help calm angry listeners. Researchers say the results contradict the notion such music is linked to aggression and delinquency.

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience in May, was conducted at Australia’s University of Queensland. Researchers asked 39 extreme-music lovers to describe a frustrating situation involving relationships, finances or work. To measure participants’ emotions, researchers monitored their heart rates and asked them how they felt throughout the anger-inducing process. Some participants then sat in silence for 10 minutes, while others spent 10 minutes listening to the extreme song of their choice.

Instead of increasing listeners’ anger, the extreme music calmed them, producing a result similar to sitting in silence.

“We found the music regulated sadness and enhanced positive emotions,” Leah Sharman, a student at the university’s School of Psychology and co-author of the study, stated in a release. “The music helped them explore the full gamut of emotion they felt, but also left them feeling more active and inspired.”

Sharman and co-researcher Genevieve Dingle, a lecturer in health and behavioral sciences at the University of Queensland, sought to challenge the theory that extreme music causes anger, a long-standing argument for foes of the genre. The pair also sought to test the notion that listeners can find happiness in harsh-sounding screamo or emotion-laden emo music.

In a September 2013 article for The Atlantic, Leah Sottile wrote about a separate study on music and emotions conducted at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The research showed “people who chose to be pissed off actually showed a greater sense of well-being overall than the people who avoided feelings of unpleasantness,” Sottile wrote.

The University of Queensland study echoes these findings, with participants reporting “they used music to enhance their happiness, immerse themselves in feelings of love and enhance their well-being.”

However, the study does note that the soothing effects of extreme music may be unique to fans of the genre. All of the participants were self-identified metal connoisseurs who weren’t undergoing any actual symptoms of distress. The researchers say they’re still unsure of the effects of extreme music over longer periods of time, and they didn’t measure factors like personality and the “tendency to ruminate.”

But the choice to listen to angry music to match an angry mood may be an active way to understand and regulate negative emotions.

So play on, metalheads.

Yep, Fully Stackable Legos You Can Eat Actually Do Exist

Sometimes, brilliance comes in bite-sizes.

Just take a look at the inspiring video above, brought to you by Youtuber Grant Thompson, a DIY scientist and self-described “King of Random.”

With the right molds, some gelatin and patience, Thompson demonstrates how to make Lego-shaped Jell-O blocks at home that aren’t just delicious, they’re completely stackable, too — “as long as you can resist the temptation to snack on them first,” Thompson adds.

lego hand

In the video, Thompson uses Lego-shaped ice cube trays and his own silicon-based mold shaped out of real Lego bricks, and makes the whole process look unbelievably easy.

By heating the Jell-O mixture over a slow heat, the gummy sections come out extra clear and not at all as sticky as you might think, which makes them perfect for stacking.

“You can see there’s a surprising amount of detail captured in the gummy snack, and they’re not sticky at all but actually quite firm — and they smell delicious,” Thompson says in the video.

For tips on how to make your own Lego mold out of silicon like the one featured in the video, this Instructables post has you covered. Thompson added vitamin C powder to his Jell-O mix for a healthy boost, but we think a little vodka would go great for your next grown-up party.

Kylie and Kendall Jenner Have Actually Gotten Lost in a Family Member’s Closet

As part of a very fashionable family, no one was surprised when Kendall and Kylie Jenner entered the creative space as professionals. Among their individual accomplishments (beauty lines, walking in Chanel shows), the girls also carve out time to work together, creating an eponymous line sold at PacSun. The twosome chatted with Glamour about what it’s like to do work together on the line that hit stores last week.

kylie-kendall-jenner-pacsun-collaboration

Glamour: How is it working together?

Kylie Jenner: Kendall and I do just about everything with each other, but as we’ve grown up, our interests are changing. It’s really nice to be able to spend time on something we love and work together so closely on this since we can’t always be together.

Kendall Jenner: Totally. We’re sisters, so we’re always going to butt heads a bit, but at the end of the day, we respect each other’s opinions. We’ve worked together on the collection from start to finish, so there’s a little of Kylie and a little of me in every piece.

Glamour: Which piece from the new collection do you think you’ll end up living in?

Kendall: Oh God. It’s tough, but I’m gonna go with the crochet bikini. It’s different compared to the other swimsuits that I have at home, and I feel like it’ll be my go-to for pool parties or the beach this summer.

Kylie: I love that suit too! I guess I’d have to say the crochet romper because it’s different than what we’ve designed in the past. Something about it makes it so easy to dress up or down when I’m with my friends, or I’ll throw it on when I have to run errands.

Glamour: Describe each other’s style in a few words…

Kendall: Kylie, you go first.

Kylie: Let’s see…timeless, casual, and chic?

Kendall: I can work with that. My three words [for Kylie] would be edgy, fun…different. Wait, can I use “out there”?

Glamour: Totally. We’ve heard you both say whose family member’s style you admire the most, but who has the best closet, physical space-wise?

Kylie: Definitely Kim.

Kendall: All of our sisters have amazing closets, but Kim’s is insane. You could literally get lost in there. I probably actually have once or twice.

Julianne Hough Was An Extra In ‘Harry Potter,’ But We Actually Already Knew That

Julianne Hough took part in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me” feature, in which the magazine asks celebrities to list 25 interesting or random facts about themselves that the public probably doesn’t know about them. But Hough’s list comes up short, because there’s at least one fact we definitely already knew:

11. I was a Gryffindor in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” but don’t blink or you’ll miss me!

While this isn’t news to us, maybe it’s news to you. And there really isn’t a bad time to revisit a moment in Harry Potter history. Hough’s role’s as a Hogwarts student was blink and you’ll miss it, indeed. She can be seen sitting near Hermoine (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) while they cheer on Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) at a Quidditch match.

juliannehoughharrypotter

Hough has actually spoken her appearance in beloved 2001 children’s movie on more than one occasion.

“Oh, yes. I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m still such a big fan. I always go and watch the midnight showing, so I’m excited to see it,” she told Parade magazine in 2011 when asked if the ending of the film series felt bittersweet.

She added, “I might get in trouble for this, but I actually stole the Gryffindor scarf that I had as a memento. I was like, ‘I have to keep this scarf!’”

Then in 2012, during an appearance on “Live With Kelly,” Hough brought up the scarf story again and admitted that while filming the movie as an 11-year-old she fell hard for Harry Potter himself.

“I was kind of in love, especially with Daniel Radcliffe. I wrote him a love note. It was Valentine’s Day and I got him the Valentino Beanie Baby. I never heard back,” she said.

You can also see Hough in this deleted scene from the first “Harry Potter” movie:

12 Couples That Almost But Never Were Actually Couples

Remember the time that C.J. and Toby finally realized they were madly in love and began a romantic relationship that went down in favorite-TV-couples history? No? That’s because it never happened. It should have, but alas, “West Wing” mastermind Aaron Sorkin doesn’t really care what you want. Sorkin isn’t the only writer/producer/creator who kept some of our favorite almost couples from having beautiful and meaningful relationships. Occasionally, audiences were treated to, say, an awkward kiss never to be repeated, an “I love you” that was quickly taken back or — at most — one night of romance.

In a match-making collaboration with Juicy Fruit, we’re recapping some of our favorite never-were couples from film, television and literature — the ones that left us wishing the love birds would all realize their true feelings, leading to an ending filled with both figurative and literal fireworks. Warning: this list contains spoilers.

Will Truman and Jack McFarland (“Will & Grace”)

Jack was there for Will when he came out of the closet. There was also that almost romantic night they didn’t actually spend together on Karen’s boat. Will supported Jack financially and Jack reminded Will when he needed to hit the gym. Isn’t that the very definition of a couple? Despite the zings about Will’s weight and hairline, and Jack’s spazztic personality and frequent unemployment, these two really cared for each other and found ways to show it, including that one time Jack told Patti LuPone to shut her “beautiful brassy trap.”

Hermione Granger and Harry Potter (Harry Potter books)

Plenty of readers thought that something more should have blossomed between Potter fans’ favorite witch and wizard. Ron always seemed a bit too dim for Hermione. But her relationship with Harry displayed respect, kindness, love and a deeper understanding of one another. Ron and Hermione constantly bickered. Plus, Ron was incredibly awkward and had zero game. But there was a comforting shoulder to cry on and blue eyes for days with the ever-sensitive Harry.

Peggy Olson and Don Draper (“Mad Men”)

Peggy Olson: a great example of a strong woman who wouldn’t be afraid to tell a man what’s up and to get his act together. The recent downward spiral Don experienced would never have happened had he been involved with Peggy Olson. She would not have put up with that crazy business. And when it comes to their work, they make each other better. We’d also love to see Peggy with someone who won’t cut his nipple off and give it to her in a box.

Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy (“30 Rock”)

They decided in Florida that their untraditional friendship was too interesting to become romantic and ruin everything. But that didn’t stop many fans from wishing sparks had flown between “sister-ployee” and “work oracle.” Jack suffered from major mommy issues and Liz, a serious cheese problem. Despite their flaws and differences (and there were many), the two looked out for each other. Remember in season three when Liz flashed an entire room at a business retreat to pull the attention off of Jack when he forgot to remove his mic? While they were certainly not the best people in the world, Jack and Liz weren’t the worst, either. “Graduate students are the worst.”

Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”)

Everyone loves to watch lifelong best friends fall in love. The only hitch for Willow and Xander was, the sparks started while they were in love with other people. They kissed in episodes throughout season three (including one where Cordelia nearly died trying to rescue them while they were getting cozy). Guilt-ridden by their betrayal and the hurt they caused, the two never developed a long-term romantic relationship. Eventually Willow fell in love with another witch and Xander fell in love with an ex-demon and almost everyone died.

Frasier Crane and Roz Doyle (“Frasier”)

Work relationships in TV shows are a breeding ground for sexual tension. Straight-shooter Roz was never afraid to get into a verbal battle of wits with Frasier. As his producer for his radio show she freely mixed her own two cents in to his advice for callers. The zings about her healthy sexual appetite and his pretentious yet childish demeanor flew back and forth throughout the series. Still, there were plenty of warm moments between the two of them. They slept together once, and it made things super weird, but in the end they smoothed it all over and restored a solid friendship. They were both complete messes (he had a crazy ex-wife and her baby-daddy was a college undergrad) but they created a perfect balance at the same time.

Leslie Knope and Jean-Ralphio Saperstein (“Parks and Recreation”)

Strictly speaking pre-Ben, here. Despite the soft spot we all have for Jean-Ralphio’s shenanigans and the way he sings the end of every other sentence like he’s Mary J. Blige laying down a track at Columbia, Ben Wyatt trumps Jean-Ralphio any day. That being said, we think Leslie and J-R could have had an interesting connection, not too dissimilar from the time that Ann and Tom dated. Leslie would have been an organizing influence on him — and his fake death in the series finale would have gone a lot smoother because of it.

Dottie Hinson and Jimmy Dugan (“A League of Their Own”)

There may not be crying in baseball, but we’re crying over the fact that she didn’t stay in Rockford. Imagine the career the Peaches’ starting catcher would have had if she’d left her dairy farm and her World War II-wounded veteran husband for her coach. Like any queen of diamonds, Dottie knew how to put a washed-up, occasional misogynist like Jimmy in his place. Not to mention, her command of the field earned his respect. It’s hard to say how a romance would have changed things, but there definitely would have been a new generation of insanely talented ball players who could catch foul balls in mid-splits and bat over .500.

Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister (“Game of Thrones”)

He saved her life at the cost of his own hand, and she managed to reunite him with his indifferent family. Arguably, Brienne is the only person with whom Jamie has been truly open, which shows his trust and respect for her. Likewise, she has shown the same for him. He’s beautiful and rich, and she, well, isn’t … but it could work. Mr. Martin, if you’re reading this, incest is so two season ago. Bring on the Tarth.

Edith and just about ANYONE (“Downton Abbey”)

Aside from the dead ones, Edith is probably the unluckiest character in Downton. Her demeanor and untraditional look regrettably marks her as the “other” daughter when introduced at dinner parties. First, we saw her jilted at the altar by an old dude with whom no one was really hoping she’d ride off into the sunset. And just when we think she’s found true love with married man Michael Gregson — so many things wrong with that scenario to start — he goes off to Germany, gets murdered and leaves her pregnant with his child out of wedlock. At this point, we’d settle for any well-meaning, age appropriate suitor for Edith. Not an easy task when it literally feels like the eligible bachelors on this show keep dying off or heading across the pond to America (in which case, they may as well be dead).

Dr. Ian Malcolm and Dr. Ellie Sattler (“Jurassic Park”)

If it weren’t for that pretentious, awkward-around-children Dr. Grant, perhaps Ellie would have taken Ian’s flirting more seriously. Who can resist a chaos theorist who knows how to rock a black leather blazer to a field expedition? She definitely wouldn’t have lured him back to another dino-filled island in the second movie. If only love — like life — found a way.

Mindy Lahiri and Peter Prentice (“The Mindy Project”)

As Peter left for Texas to follow love, he told Mindy she is his best friend. And when he came back just before his wedding, he asked her to be his best man (cue the sappy noises from the audience). They share a lot more in common than she and Danny, and how adorable were they as a fake couple at Mindy’s ex’s wedding? If they ever got together, we bet they’d spend weekends picking out cute outfits for Nicole the dog, reading gossip magazines and crashing weddings of professional athletes.

The Internet Is Actually Your Great Grandma Doris

The Internet seems like it is always changing and is always on the forefront of new technology, but when it comes down to it, the Internet always has been and always will be our Great Grandma Doris: absolutely lovable but also a bit stuck in her ways and ultimately someone who you think twice before bringing to an upscale restaurant. Stick with me here.

First of all, the Internet has been a bit senile and doing this thing lately where it forgets the natural passing of time. Essentially, the Internet is our Great Grandma Doris sending us five dollars for our birthday three times a year and then surprised to see how much we have grown. It’s okay, Internet. We all make mistakes. While triple the birthday money is almost always welcomed with open arms, why is the Internet so obsessed that time passes and people age? Should we truly be surprised that a child star who was five the last time we saw them now looks like a 20-year-old because the person is indeed 20 years old? The Internet is Doris pinching your cheeks, showing your friends the pictures of you in your diapers or naked in the bathtub and not recognizing your new found adulthood.

Also, there’s no denying that Great Grandma Doris is kind of racist and can sometimes be a bit rude. And truly, so is the Internet. This one needs no further explaining, just read a few YouTube comments and you will understand. While we should not stand for this, we sometimes just accept it and say, “Ah! Just Doris being Doris.”

Great Grandma Doris wants nothing more to set you up with her best friend Gladys’s grandson and before that, it was her tax attorney. She is the original Tinder, OkCupid, Match, Christian Mingle, and would it be far off to say that Great Grandma Doris has a higher success rate?

Pinterest! This needs no explanation. Pinterest is essentially Great Grandma Doris’s craft room. Woman knows her way around a needle and thread.

Next, Great Grandma Doris does have an endless list of stories to share from her years growing up. But, take her stories with a grain of salt, as over the years details may be hazy and hey, maybe she is just bored and is making things up as she goes. Hate to break it to you, but chances are, she didn’t actually lose the role of Letter Turner for Wheel of Fortune to Vanna White (dream job, by the way). Regardless, both Doris and the Internet should be fact-checked. On that note, Great Grandma Doris has embarrassing stories about you that she has no qualms about sharing. Hate to say this, but so does the Internet.

All in all, the Internet is your Great Grandma Doris. She is a huge gossip, she says what is on her mind, and she is a questionable party guest, especially after a few drinks. She remembers the Beatles in their prime, worships Betty White, and is obsessed with real-life murder mysteries and Family Feud. She somehow knows all your business and always accidentally tells your mom. Thank you, Internet. Thank you for being all of our Great Grandma Doris. Now, please stop sending me chain emails that threaten my love life.

3 New Year’s Resolution Remixes: How to Actually Enjoy Them This Time

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again. A time where we take a break from work, spend time with friends and family, and refocus on what’s important. But unfortunately, it’s also a time where we sometimes eat and drink things in huge quantities, spend too much money, and secretly worry about what we are doing. Many of us, in an effort to make up for how we’ve splurged in December, make promises to ourselves for self-betterment in the new year.

The end goal for most New Year’s resolutions is living a better life, and I’d like to suggest the key to a better life is not cutting out something you love doing; rather, it’s deliberately crafting a balanced life you enjoy. What people enjoy differs from individual to individual, but I think what people want to get out of their enjoyment is the feeling of happiness. To point out the obvious, people want to be in-joy.

Below find the three New Year’s goals I most commonly hear, and an alternative, more balanced goal that allows you to both enjoy the moments that pass throughout the year and feel great on Dec. 31. Be warned! The substitutions proposed below are probably much harder than the more regularly set goals. Balance is tricky.

Giving Up Something I Enjoy

Instead of giving something up entirely, try committing to learning to trust your body, mind, and intuition.

If you’re considering giving up something you enjoy, like alcohol or sweets, instead commit to trusting yourself to listen to your intuition and make responsible decisions depending on the situation. That might mean at a Christmas party where alcohol is free, you have a gut feeling it wouldn’t be worth the headache to drink at all. It also might mean when you’re out to dinner with an old friend, it might be worth it to go for that second bottle of wine (and then cab home). For sweets, it might mean passing on the box of cookies going around the office, but waking up one morning, realizing you really want a donut, and then enjoying it guilt-free!

I Want to Lose Weight

Instead, commit to adding something positive to your life, something you enjoy, like exercise, mediation, or a balanced eating routine.

If you’re like many and concerned about the extra pounds you’ve slowly added on over the holidays, reframe your goal to be more positive. Instead of wanting to lose weight, commit to add something you enjoy that will also make you healthy. Clear your mind of any arbitrary pound shedding ideals and replace them with thoughts of making a point to get together with friends for a weekly yoga class and dinner. You’ll naturally begin to look and feel amazing!

I Am Going to Spend Less and Save More

Instead, I’m going to develop a healthy relationship with money.

No matter how much money you have, spending money and saving money can make anyone feel weird. Developing a healthy relationship with money is important, and just like with any healthy relationship, communication is vital. The communication begins internally. Take some time before the year is over and understand what it is you value. Do you value experiences like going out for dinner or do you value more tangible things like new clothes? Also, take some time to think about situations that have come up in the past that made you uncomfortable about money. It’s a great starting point for figuring out what you do not care to spend money on. Once you know what you value, commit to do doing the tough thing and sharing your spending preferences with people you know you’ll be spending money with. It might be a bit awkward at first, but it’s likely you’ll open up the floor for interesting conversation and they’ll share their preferences, too!

Playful Photos Capture What It Actually Looks Like To Be A Nun Today

When we imagine the life of a nun, we imagine scenes of reverent prayer, humble wisdom and constant piety. We don’t really conjure images of, say, trying to mow the lawn when a dog obnoxiously gets in the way and messes with your groove.

But, then again, someone’s got to mow the lawn.

dog

Today we’re smiling over photographs of modern day nuns doing their not quite so sacred duties, thanks to Scotland-based photographer Craig Buchan. The series, titled “Commitment,” features the sisters of the Poor Clare Monastery living lives of total devotion to the Bible, free of worldly possessions or desires. However, despite how different their lives may be from the average contemporary city-dweller, there are still moments of shared experience in the banal chores of everyday life.

“I had a chance meeting with sister Dominique and the idea, to start this project, grew from there,” Buchan explained in a statement. “I’ve always been drawn to individuals who seem to break the mold or challenge our preconceived notions of identity, the sisters of Humbie very much do so. I was welcomed into their private world and photographing in this environment for me was inspiring, to have the chance to capture the little moments that reveal themselves.”

Buchan’s images capture the sweet juxtaposition of divine calling and banal duty, revealing that the space between people living very different lives is often not as vast as it seems. Whether taking a drive or vacuuming a rug, the sisters of Humbie capture the contemporary reality of a lifestyle that’s often assumed to be from another time. “I hope to give an insight of what life is like as a nun in this day and age and to show a lighter side too,” Buchan continued. Mission accomplished.

Here’s Why We’re Actually Still Watching Crime Shows

Since I write television, allow me to begin by stating the obvious: America has become more polarized than at any time since the 1960s. People on opposite sides of the partisan divide have not only ceased listening to each other, they are also looking to buy homes and rent apartments in politically homogenous neighborhoods (and cities!); so that the newspaper resting at the bottom of their cages won’t ruffle their ideological feathers; so they can tell birds singing different songs to flock off.

In another chapter from the hard to believe, crossing party lines has become a criminal offense, so that it’s impossible to get anything done without offering insult to one side or the other. And every action by moderately opposing forces is greeted with hysteria. Democrats adopt a Republican health care proposal from the 1990s, which was actually implemented by a Republican governor (and eventual Republican presidential nominee), and the rage on the right cannot be contained. Democrats furiously condemn a policy of fighting a war in Iraq and keeping prisoners in Guantanamo and the ethics of drone strikes and then, when they gain power…oh, the list is too long.

For better or worse, the justice system has become the last refuge for those of us looking for common ties with our fellow Americans. The need to arrest criminals and put them on trial transcends our petty differences, and allows varied communities to unite in common cause. Murder is terribly hard to politicize. As one of Henry the II’s sons says in The Lion in Winter, “I’ve never heard a corpse ask how it got so cold.”

And homicide investigations are largely successful. In most big cities, perhaps especially in Los Angeles and New York, every effort is made to comply with the law while hunting down those who have not. The LAPD polls regularly as the most respected municipal institution in Los Angeles. Our law enforcement agencies exist as working proof that government can move competently – even with bravery and selflessness – to do the right thing.

The unconscious fantasy element of procedural drama has evolved, from marveling at the intelligence of a particular detective, into a wistful desire that our entire body politic could put aside our mostly imaginary arguments long enough to focus on the crisis at hand: to drop our opinions in favor of the pattern of facts.

We love a good whodunit; bringing a murderer to heel satisfies our heroic impulses, and unites the audience with shared, public approval. If only we could figure out how to respect each other as well as we do the abstract principles of the justice system! That, ladies and gentlemen, is a mystery we ought to solve together.

In the meantime, procedural drama will have to do.

But don’t toss her in with the attention-grabbing Lady Gagas and Ke$ has of the world just yet — the young lady has actually had some elegant, toned-down fashion moments this year. Chic jumpsuits, well-played crop tops and muted designer duds, courtesy of Marc Jacobs, Valentino and Proenza Schouler, all rounded out her 2013 wardrobe amid all of the sheer numbers and pantslessness.
