Jet-a-porter Puts the Focus on Dressing for Holiday, Adventures

HOLIDAY READY: Net-a-porter is putting more focus on holiday wear as it looks to answer to the needs of an increasingly global and mobile consumer who is big on experiences, travel and her social media image.
The e-tailer has launched a new category, Jet-a-porter, offering a curated selection of resort, swimwear and ski clothing. According to the company, skiwear has increased by more than half since last year. Given its significant growth trajectory, it made up almost three-quarters of Net’s Cruise 2017 buy.
“We’ve seen major growth year-on-year since launching the sports category, Net-a-sporter, in 2014 and we don’t see this slowing down any time soon,” said Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net’s global buying director.
She said that among the best-selling brands were Fendi, Perfect Moment, best known for their onesies, Moncler Grenoble and the knitwear label Chinti and Parker, which recently created an exclusive capsule for the retailer.

St. Barts Travel Adventures

St. Barts Travel Adventures

Whenever you hear about St. Barts, its usually in connection with which celebrities are partying there. Its definitely known as the island of the stars. Why is that? Well, it may be because of the islands pristine beauty. And while its small, only eight square miles, there are a lot of hills, inlets, coves, beaches and tropical landscape packed into that space. Driving around the island, wherever you go, the villages are neat, houses are well-tended, roads are good (although narrow and winding), and even the cemeteries are beautiful. Then there are the hotels and villas. The hotels have been carefully planned to be small and precious, with an emphasis on exquisite service and a guarantee of privacy. The luxurious private villas outnumber the available hotel rooms and overlook the sparkling turquoise sea. The villas are self-contained residences with wait staff, pools, Jacuzzis, and home theaters ideal for hiding from crowds of admirers and paparazzi. But wait, there are also the restaurants. The French heritage shines through loud and clear, and the fusion of French and Creole cuisines is offered in gorgeous settings. Even the plentiful beach restaurants turn the typical barbecue and burger fare into gourmet experiences. But the choices also include American favorites. After all, this is St. Barts and the watchword is: You want it? You got it. With its long history as a duty-free port, you know there are some bargains to be had. The shops in Gustavia and St. Jean offer couture clothing, accessories, jewelry and more. Its Parisian shopping in paradise. And no doubt a big part of the allure comes from what the island doesnt have flashy casinos, high-rise hotels and crowded beaches. The real draw of St. Barts, whether you are rich or poor, is the chance to enjoy the ambiance and character of France in a tropical setting. The island is part of Guadeloupe, a department of France, the official language is French, the electrical current is 220 and the official form of mo

The Adventures of Lewis and Clark

The Adventures of Lewis and Clark

In 1803, when the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France (for a scant million), it doubled the size of the young country. Stretching north from New Orleans to the Canadian border and westward from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, the area contained over 800,000 square miles. That same year, President Thomas Jefferson designated two young men – Meriweather Lewis and William Clark – as leaders of an expedition to explore this vast new acquisition, as well as other lands of the West. In the spring of 1804, the two men and an intrepid band of hunters, carpenters, gunsmiths, and blacksmiths, known as the “Corps of Discovery,” embarked on a perilous journey that would truly give meaning to the term “Wild West.” In this exciting, action-packed young reader’s edition, based on the author’s acclaimed earlier study of the two great American explorers, historian John Bakeless chronicles the daily challenges these men faced – from encounters with indigenous people, snake-infested waterways, prairie fires, floods, heat, and thirst, to illness, famine, and frigid mountain passes. The result is a saga of epic proportions, an amazing story of courage and determination sure to delight readers with its authenticity and vivid, dramatic style. It’s a “thrilling account of one of the most magnificent expeditions in all history. absorbing and inspirational from start to finish.” – New York Times Book Review.

I know a way to make you feel really cheap.”Tonight, Tommy will take her to a crummy bar, where he sets up a serial gangbang on a ripped pool table in the back room. Instead of a campus intellectual and a girl cop, Alison will satisfy seven sex-crazed men-construction and steel mill workers. She’ll dress the part: her shortest miniskirt, a push-up bra, and a top with a plunging neckline. She’ll layer on the makeup and wear take-me shoes. Because that’s what real sluts do. Alison says yes. And she’s scared.

Adventures in the Trade Wind

Adventures in the Trade Wind

This is at once the biography of an Englishman who became the pioneering charterboat skipper of an American yacht, and a history of the charterboat business in the islands. Morris Nicholson’s story reflects a time now all but vanished in the islands, beginning when they were neglected colonial outposts and a single yacht meant income for the islanders. In no other book is there an account of how skippered yachts, bareboats, and headboats came to sail the Caribbean Sea and became an economic sector. However it is Nicholson’s story-and his stories of others-that drives the narrative and fills it with human interest.

Wild Life: Travel Adventures of a Worldly Woman

Foreward Reviews’ INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award Gold Winner for Travel. Winner 1st place for best travel memoir at the 2014 North American Book Awards. Also winner of the silver Solas Awards for Best Travel Story of the Year 2014. From licking a Monet in Paris, to pushing an abusive macho honeymooner off his sailboat in the shark-infested Galápagos, to saving her toddler son from a charging bull elephant in Africa, these delightful tales will inspire readers to follow the call of a wild life and leave home with their doors unlocked. “When you’re hitchhiking about in foreign lands, whether in France, Morocco, or perhaps New Zealand, it helps-as California-girl Lisa Alpine discovered-to be “young, blond, persistent, and female.” And to get along, once you’ve reached an approximate destination in hardscrabble exotica, you should be friendly, fearless, and sometimes counter intuitively trusting. There is daring, humor, and even a bit of Eros in the fourteen stories that span her life from the innocence of eighteen, when she was struck with wanderlust, into middle age. “I am a woman who wanders and wonders and writes,” she explains. And what wandering there’s been, beginning in Paris, where she tasted art by licking a Monet. In Vienna, she asked an old woman, who turned out to be a survivor of Auschwitz, where she might find cheap lodging and ended up as the woman’s house guest. She met the chauffeur of Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones in Switzerland and was offered a job babysitting Richards’s two children, but after witnessing a temper tantrum by Richards’s live-in girlfriend, declined and took a job as a bartender, offering free drinks in order to get her slave-driving boss, who held her passport as ransom, to fire her. She had the sort of inevitable adventure that tests us all, coping with her mother’s dementia before her death on Mother’s Day, 2011. In a bittersweet way, it was probably her most admirable adventure of all.” – Foreword Reviews’ “Lisa’s love of

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is a popular 1876 novel about a young boy growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the town of “St Petersburg”, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain grew up. In the story’s introduction, Twain notes: “Most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred; one or two were experiences of my own, the rest of those boys were schoolmates of mine. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom Sawyer also, but not from an individual-he is a combination of the characteristics of three boys whom I knew, and therefore belongs to the composite order of architecture.” (Wikipedia)

Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward (1883 – 1959), better known as Sax Rohmer, was a prolific English novelist. He is best remembered for his series of novels featuring the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu. He issued the first Fu Manchu novel, in 1913. It was an immediate success. The Fu Manchu stories, together with his more conventional detective series characters-Paul Harley, Gaston Max, Red Kerry, Morris Klaw (an occult detective), and The Crime Magnet- made Rohmer one of the most successful and well-paid authors of the 1920s and 1930s. The first three Fu Manchu books were published in the four years 1913-17; but it was not until 1931 (some fourteen years after the third book in the series) that Rohmer returned to the series with The Daughter of Fu Manchu. The reason for the long interval was that Rohmer wanted to be well and truly done with the series after The Si-Fan Mysteries, much as Arthur Conan Doyle did with Sherlock Holmes. The first three books had been successfully filmed by Stoll in the twenties as a pair of serials. In 1928, Rohmer bowed to pressure and agreed to write a fourth novel as a serial for Collier’s. Paramount had the first Warner Oland picture gearing up for production and the daily newspaper strip based on the series was in the offing. In this ebook: The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu, 1913 The Hand Of Fu-Manchu, 1917 The Return of Dr. Fu-Manchu, 1916 Tales of Chinatown, 1922 Brood of the Witch-Queen, 1918 The Devil Doctor, 1916 Bat Wing, 1918 The Yellow Claw, 1915 The Golden Scorpion, 1919 The Quest of the Sacred Slipper, 1919 Tales of Secret Egypt, 1918 Dope, 1919 The Green Eyes of Bâst, 1920 Fire-Tongue, 1922 The Orchard of Tears, 1918 The Haunting of Low Fennel, 1920 The Sins of Séverac Bablon, 1914

Understanding Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Understanding Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Since the time of its publication in 1884, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has generated heated controversy. One of the most frequently banned books in the history of literature, it raises issues of race relations, censorship, civil disobedience, and adolescent group psychology as relevant today as they were in the 1880s. This collection of historical documents, collateral readings, and commentary captures the stormy character of the slave-holding frontier on the eve of war and highlights the legacy of past conflicts in contemporary society. Among the source materials presented are: memoirs of fugitive slaves, a river gambler, a gunman, and Mississippi Valley settlers; the Southern Code of Honor; rules of dueling; and an interview with a 1990s gang member. These materials will promote interdisciplinary study of the novel and enrich the student's understanding of the issues raised. The work begins with a literary analysis of the novel's structure, language, and major themes and examines its censorship history, including recent cases linked to questions of race and language. A chapter on censorship and race offers a variety of opposing contemporary views on these issues as depicted in the novel. The memoirs in the chapter Mark Twain's Mississippi Valley illuminate the novel's pastoral view of nature in conflict with a violent civilization resting on the institution of slavery and shaped by the genteel code of honor. Slavery, Its Legacy, and Huck Finn features 19th-century pro-slavery arguments, firsthand accounts of slavery, the text of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, and opposing views on civil disobedience from such 19th- and 20th-century Americans as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Stephen A. Douglas, and William Sloane Coffin. Nineteenth-century commentators on the Southern Code of Honor and Twain's sentimental cultural satire directly relate the novel to the social and cultural milieu in which it was written. Each chapter closes with study questions, student project ideas, and sources for further reading on the topic. This is an ideal companion for teacher use and student research in English and American history courses.

Happy Chaos: From Punky to Parenting and My Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between

Happy Chaos: From Punky to Parenting and My Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between

Enthusiastic, spunky, and positive, Punky Brewster was the quintessential eighties kid. Nearly thirty years later, Soleil Moon Frye-the adorable girl who played her on TV-is all grown up. Now she’s a married mom of two, an entrepreneur who parlayed her successful kids’ clothing line into a partnership with Target, and a social media whiz with millions of followers. Many of the same girls who watched Soleil on television are now grown up with children of their own, too, and they look to her as a go-to source for realistic, in-the-trenches parenting advice, inspiration, and fun. Happy Chaos invites those women into Soleil’s world, and makes them revel in the chaos of their own lives, too. Soleil believes that “happy chaos” is the sign of a family operating at its best-when parents accept that they’ll make mistakes, that there will be messes, tears and skinned knees. She learned to love a jumbled life during her own childhood, when her own mom created an atmosphere that was thoroughly unconventional. Their house in Los Angeles was a haven for many young stars of Soleil’s generation, often far from home and looking for a safe place to hang out. In this book, she shows how her happy but chaotic childhood informed her parenting: Each chapter begins with a telling reminiscence before moving into insightful advice and fun stories about life with her husband and two adorable daughters.

Adventures of Midnight the Cat

Adventures of Midnight the Cat

this is a very entertaining and touching story about midnight’s adventures, told from his point of view, beginning with life as a kitten, taking advantage of education his mom provided, finding his home after his family was abandoned, his vacation in the rocky mountains and alaska, and the epic aftermath of his home alone party and the cat nip party at the cat phoenician resort and much much more.my homeone day, much to my surprise, the short one, my master, said to me that i was more dog like than cat like because of my outstanding personality. at first i was insulted. dogs, even rufus, slobbered all over everything. hunter the schnauzer slobbered. the dogs in the veterinarians office slobbered. rufus always fell all over himself when the humans came home, wagging his tail and whining. i think that he wanted attention and a treat. maybe all dogs have some kind of attention complex, but i don’t. at mealtime rufus would sit and stare at the humans and when a crumb fell, he jumped on it as if he hadn’t eaten in a week. i still think he ate all the food so that the humans couldn’t afford to keep us.alaska vacationThe highlight of the trip was when we passed a small pond about 15 feet from the road where a black bear was getting a drink. the short one insisted that the tall one turn the motor home around so that she could get pictures of the bear. when we got back to the pond, some tourists were standing about ten feet in front of the bear taking pictures..i often wonder about the brilliance of tourists. at least cats are smart enough not to stand in front of an animal that could eat us. that was one of the first lessons my mom taught us kittens. maybe the tourists mom’s didn’t care if their kids were eaten or not.

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

“America’s funniest science writer” (Washington Post) takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: the questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts? Can constipation kill you? Did it kill Elvis? In Gulp we meet scientists who tackle the questions no one else thinks of-or has the courage to ask. We go on location to a pet-food taste-test lab, a fecal transplant, and into a live stomach to observe the fate of a meal. With Roach at our side, we travel the world, meeting murderers and mad scientists, Eskimos and exorcists (who have occasionally administered holy water rectally), rabbis and terrorists-who, it turns out, for practical reasons do not conceal bombs in their digestive tracts.Like all of Roach’s books, Gulp is as much about human beings as it is about human bodies.

Adventures of an Air Force Wife

Adventures of an Air Force Wife

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a military wife? Did you know that young military families often struggle to survive on military pay? Read the book to learn more about the adventures and struggles of an 18 year old Air Force wife. If being a young military wife wasn’t difficult enough, add a baby to the family. The adventures begin at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois where the family of three lived in their first apartment. An overflowing bathtub, a missing hamster, and some too close neighbors added to the mayhem. To make life even more exciting, the young family was forced to leave their “comfort zone” in the midwest and relocate to cold, snowy Minot, North Dakota. Can you imagine moving 1,400 miles from home in the middle of winter at tender age of 18? Arriving in a far off northern tier state with no home, no furniture, and not much money presented many unique challenges. Share the adventures as a young mother daydreams about the rich people who shopped at the former fur store she lived above. Did she find any forgotten fur coats in the vault at Van de Streek Furs? This book details a young family’s struggle to survive the brutal North Dakota winters, and creatively live on an airman’s pay. Have you ever gone dumpster diving to provide for your family? The adventures take place in the ’70s, before cell phones and the internet. Remember CB radios? In the ’70s, they were a great way to communicate and meet new people. Would you entrust the care of your baby to someone you met on the CB radio? Read about the family’s move to the coveted base housing, which came with a new set of rules and problems. Have you ever thought about joining the military or marrying a service member? Then this is the book for you This book is an interesting read for current or former military wives, who will be able to relate to the challenges of living from paycheck to paycheck. You haven’t shopped until you have waited in line at the commissary for an hour

The Adventures of a Hard-up, Diabetic Traveller with a Corn Flake Problem

The Adventures of a Hard-up, Diabetic Traveller with a Corn Flake Problem

The Adventures of a Hard-up, Diabetic Traveller with a Corn Flake Problem, details a decade’s worth of experiences from my travels in over 60 countries. I have travelled for 71.3% of this past decade, with a daily expenditure of £14.13, pretty cheap when you consider that includes everything. I have also had type 1 diabetes since I was 9 years old, which has caused plenty of problems along my journeys around the world. I have tried to travel off the beaten track and slowly, to look at places thoroughly and to take it all in. I have kept a daily diary on my travels so the experiences are recollected and told from the night that they happened, often written in a tent or a dingy hotel room. And that’s how to see this book, as a collection of short stories told in chronological order, one trip at a time. It’s not a guide book about specific places, although I would recommend anyone to visit any of the places that I consider to be one of my highlights. I grew up in the South of England, went to college in London, then University in Nottingham to study Genetics. On graduation I was faced with the prospect of joining the rat-race but chose travelling instead. Over the years I decided I wanted to visit everywhere and my ambition developed into ‘eating a bowl of corn flakes in every country in the world’, to add a little spice to my cause.   To whet your appetite here are some of the things I consider to be highlights from over the years: I’ve camped in a mosque and outside Venice with 200 dogs, I’ve visited ancient sites such as Machu Pichu and a lost city in the Colombian jungle. I’ve hang-glided over Rio and Hot-air ballooned over the Valley of the Kings. I’ve come across hippos, bears, Komodo dragons and an anteater. I’ve been diving with sharks, seahorses, dolphins and I’ve ridden a camel and an elephant. I’ve encountered all sorts of people, from an evangelical Christian in Albania, to a guy in Mauritania who lent me his house. I’ve seen the Sahara, the jungle, w
