Founder of African Fashion International Partners with Global Citizens Festival

Dr. Precious Moloi Motsepe is partnering with Global Citizens Festival, which is put on by the Global Poverty Project that aims to end extreme poverty by 2030.
Through the Motsepe Foundation, where she serves as co-founder and chief executive officer, the doctor, fashion entrepreneur and philanthropist will help support the South African edition of Global Citizens Festival, which will celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday. She will get on stage this weekend at the New York edition of the festival, which will feature performers from Janet Jackson, Janelle Monae, The Weeknd, Cardi B and more, to speak about the partnership,
“I went to the festival before and I was really impressed with their model of convening young people around the issues and ensuring that leaders in business and politics connect with young people and young people hold them accountable,” said Dr. Motsepe, who was recently named co-chairman of the Maverick Collective by outgoing co-chair Melinda Gates. “We thought it would be best to take the Global Citizens Festival to South Africa in celebration of Nelson Mandela. In Africa, the youth population is huge and we need to ensure they are educated and engaged.”
The festival in South Africa will take place on December 2

South African Fashion Weeks See Spurt of Young Designers

South Africa’s two rival fashion weeks were a celebration of African design as well as an indication of the growing corporate support for the country’s young designers.
At South Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg, which was held earlier this month, one of its banner sponsors, the department store chain Woolworths, backed the Woolworths StyleBySA show, which featured eight local designers: Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, AKJP, Maria McCloy, Sol-Sol, Selfi and Young & Lazy.
The designers showed modern streetwear to footwear and accessories inspired by the African continent; from the runway, the collaborative capsule collection was, in a first for SAFW, made available online immediately and what ensued was “a frenzy of online sales,” according to Charmaine Huet, Woolworths’ group director of marketing and sustainability.
Fast-tracking runway to retail has been a priority for the partnership of Woolworths and SAFW.
“As a passionately South African retailer we want to boost the visibility and viability of local designers,” Huet noted. “The quality of the work on show, and the response to it, is compelling proof of the incredible local talent the South African fashion industry has on offer.’’
After inventory of the StyleBySA capsule collection was exhausted via online sales, the collections became available in select Woolworths

An American Beach for African Americans

An American Beach for African Americans

In the only complete history of Florida’s American Beach to date, Marsha Dean Phelts draws together personal interviews, photos, newspaper articles, memoirs, maps, and official documents to reconstruct the character and traditions of Amelia Island’s 200-acre African American community. In its heyday, when other beaches grudgingly provided only limited access, black vacationers traveled as many as 1,000 miles down the east coast of the United States and hundreds of miles along the Gulf coast to a beachfront that welcomed their business. Beginning in 1781 with the Samuel Harrison homestead on the southern end of Amelia Island, Phelts traces the birth of the community to General Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15, in which the Union granted many former Confederate coastal holdings, including Harrison’s property, to former slaves. She then follows the lineage of the first African American families known to have settled in the area to descendants remaining there today, including those of Zephaniah Kingsley and his wife, Anna Jai. Moving through the Jim Crow era, Phelts describes the development of American Beach’s predecessors in the early 1900s. Finally, she provides the fullest account to date of the life and contributions of Abraham Lincoln Lewis, the wealthy African American businessman who in 1935, as president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, initiated the purchase and development of the tract of seashore known as American Beach. From Lewis’s arrival on the scene, Phelts follows the community’s sustained development and growth, highlighting landmarks like the Ocean-Vu-Inn and the Blue Palace and concluding with a stirring plea for the preservation of American Beach, which is currently threatened by encroaching development. In a narrative full of firsthand accounts and “old-timer” stories, Phelts, who has vacationed at American Beach since she was four and now lives there, frequently adopts the style of an oral historian to paint what is ultimately a pers

Galeries Lafayette to Celebrate African Art and Design

ART OF AFRICA: Galeries Lafayette will celebrate African art and design with an exhibition and pop-up shop next spring.
From March 29 to June 10, window displays at the French department store chain’s Boulevard Haussmann flagship will feature works by Lakin Ogunbanwo, a Nigerian photographer best known for his portraits. Joël Andrianomearisoa, a mixed-media collage and sculpture artist who lives and works between Paris and Madagascar, will create an installation under the store’s signature cupola.
The store’s first-floor gallery space will host an exhibition curated by Marie-Ann Yemsi called “Le jour qui vient” (“The Day to Come” in English), featuring painters, sculptors, photographers and video artists, many of whom the store said have never shown their works in France. Among them will be pieces by Igshaan Adams, a South African tapestry artist, and Ruby Onyinyechi Amanze, a Nigerian-born artist based in Brooklyn, N.Y., whose drawings evoke key themes of the African diaspora by depicting characters she calls “aliens” — people with fluid geographic and cultural identities.
“This artistic voyage through critical, dense and promising works invites us to transform our outlook, our perceptions,” Galeries Lafayette said in a statement.

A Dark African Fever

A Dark African Fever

Sophie was a prim and proper young American girl, at odds with the times, though perhaps not given her gentle life in the southern state of Georgia. After graduating, she takes a year off and joins the Peace Corps, to help educate the people of Africa in proper hygiene and health. It embarrassed her somewhat that the villagers wore so few clothes, but she had no intention of imitating them. Until a tall, broad shouldered young man put other images into her head, images which made her squirm with excitement. When she manages to lose herself – naked – while bathing, and was captured by an even taller, more powerfully built African man, intent on taking her home to be his wife, all her inhibitions began to melt under a dark torrent of shocked arousal and darkly wicked excitement! But having sex outside of marriage is forbidden, and the village elders believe she is possessed by a sexual demon! The demon must be punished by the village women, but also given scalding pleasure by the village men! And the formerly virginal girl wonders if her mind can survive so much heat and pleasure, or if she will become little more than a sexual animal awash in sensations and sexual need! Warning: Graphic sex and sexuality. BDSM themes

Germans and African Americans

Germans and African Americans

Germans and African Americans, unlike other works on African Americans in Europe, examines the relationship between African Americans and one country, Germany, in great depth. Germans and African Americans encountered one another within the context of their national identities and group experiences. In the nineteenth century, German immigrants to America and to such communities as Charleston and Cincinnati interacted within the boundaries of their old-world experiences and ideas and within surrounding regional notions of a nation fracturing over slavery. In the post-Civil War era in America through the Weimar era, Germany became a place to which African American entertainers, travelers, and intellectuals such as W.E.B. Du Bois could go to escape American racism and find new opportunities. With the rise of the Third Reich, Germany became the personification of racism, and African Americans in the 1930s and 1940s could use Hitler’s evil example to goad America about its own racist practices. Postwar West Germany regained the image as a land more tolerant to African American soldiers than America. African Americans were important to Cold War discourse, especially in the internal ideological struggle between Communist East Germany and democratic West Germany. Unlike many other countries in Europe, Germany has played a variety of different and conflicting roles in the African American narrative and relationship with Europe. It is this diversity of roles that adds to the complexity of African American and German interactions and mutual perceptions over time.

Men’s Wear Makes Strong Showing at African Fashion Weeks

Mercedes-Benz Cape Town Fashion Week bowed last week, the third fashion week in Africa for the month of July alone. Perhaps indicative of the growing popularity of men’s wear in the African market, MBCTFW opened at its new venue at The Watershed along the V&A Waterfront with a show by Goose Homme Prorsum, a new label from young Cape Town designer Snorley McLarean. Other men’s wear designers who showed strong collections during the three-day event included Ruald Rheeder and Adriaan Kuiters.
According to Sizwe Nzimande, group marketing executive of African Fashion International, which owns MBCTFW, “We always look to provide a platform for up-and-coming designers to enhance and drive their careers in fashion.” Goose Homme Prorsum was, along with XIPIXI, one of the two designers who made their debut in Cape Town.
“I wanted to create a collection that would have people at the edge of their seats, and I think I’ve achieved that,” McLarean said. “I am still in shock that I was asked to be the opening event.”
Using fabric he’d been storing since 2010, including a chain-and-rope scarf print reminiscent of Gucci and Hermès that was tailored into a shirt-and-shorts ensemble, the former architecture student-turned-fashion designer explained that he was

Diddy Says African American Communities Are ‘Committing Genocide On Ourselves’

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been vocal about the #BlackLivesMatter movement in the past, taking the nation’s justice system to task for non-indictments in the deaths of unarmed black men.

In reaction to the recent death of a New York rapper, Combs implored the community to look within.

Following the fatal drive-by shooting of New York rapper Lionel “Chinx Drugz” Pickens on early Sunday morning (no suspects have been arrested, as the shooting is still under investigation), Diddy posted a message to 4.6 million followers. In it, the 45-year-old declares that in some instances, African Americans should take more accountability in ending the violence related to death of black men and women in America.

For the last couple of months we have experienced a lot of injustice and wrongdoings to a community. But there is a flip side. Yes #BLACKLIVESMATTER ! But no one will respect us if we as a people don’t have any respect for our own black lives. We are committing genocide on ourselves. We are always looking for scapegoats . We as a people hurt ourselves more than anyone has ever hurt us. That makes no sense. We as a people including myself have to take accountability and do whatever we can do individually or together to stop the madness and realize that we are KINGS and QUEENS AND Must love ourselves and each other. I know I’m rambling a little bit. #BLACKLIVESMATTER SO AS A PEOPLE LETS PRACTICE WHAT WE PREACH.!!! MAY GOD BLESS US ALL! Ii LOVE YOU!!!!!!

A video posted by Sean Diddy Combs (@iamdiddy) on

“We are committing genocide on ourselves. We are always looking for scapegoats,” he wrote on the social media platform. “We as a people hurt ourselves more than anyone has ever hurt us. That makes no sense. We as a people including myself have to take accountability and do whatever we can do individually or together to stop the madness and realize that we are kings and queens and must love ourselves and each other.”

Combs’ has also spoken out on the grand jury decision in the Eric Garner case, and the aftermath in Baltimore following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. He referenced these events, and their impact on the community, earlier this month during an interview with The Associated Press.

“The black community are the forgotten ones — just like people are in poverty all over this country, but especially the black community,” he said. “So you have a lot of built-up frustration especially in the kids that see their future is bleak and they are being forgotten. People need to pay attention to that…”

This is such a great color- and one that I have just seen! It’s a delicious berry-red color. There are HUNDREDS of beads on this 32″+/- strand. So perfect with the current TRIBAL and NEON fashion trends. Temporarily strung on thread, you could wear these beads as-is. Or why not cut them apart and make some vinyl magic of your own? Ebola Guide: Infection Control for Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs) in the African Health Care Setting (including Lassa Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Ebola, Marburg, Yellow Fever) – Isolation Precautions

Ebola Guide: Infection Control for Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs) in the African Health Care Setting (including Lassa Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Ebola, Marburg, Yellow Fever) – Isolation Precautions

This vital guide from the CDC and WHO, converted for accurate flowing-text ebook format reproduction, provides critically important information about procedures for preventing the transmission of VHFs. In Africa, viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) include Lassa fever, Rift Valley fever, Marburg and Ebola haemorrhagic fevers, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and yellow fever. Humans initially contract an infection with a haemorrhagic fever virus through exposure to rodents or insects (for Ebola and Marburg VHFs, the natural reservoir is unknown). Person-to-person transmission of Lassa, Ebola, Marburg and CCHF viruses can occur through direct contact with VHF-infected material. This manual describes a system for using VHF Isolation Precautions to reduce the risk of transmission of VHF in the health care setting. The VHF Isolation Precautions described in the manual make use of common low-cost supplies, such as household bleach, water, cotton cloth, and plastic sheeting. Although the information and recommendations are intended for health facilities in rural areas in the developing world, they are appropriate for any health facility with limited resources. Contents: Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers: An Overview * How VHF Is Transmitted in Health Care Setting * What Is in This Manual * Who the Manual Is For * Objectives * How to Use the Manual * Glossary for Use with This Manual * Use Standard Precautions with All Patients * Section 2 Identify Suspected Cases of VHF * Use Information from Previous Outbreaks to Suspect a VHF * Begin VHF Isolation Precautions * Alert Health Facility Staff about Specific Risk for VHF Transmission * Report the Suspected Case to the Health Authorities * Identify Patient’s Contacts and Travel History * Isolate the Patient * Wear Protective Clothing * Disinfect Reusable Supplies and Equipment * Prepare Bleach Solutions * Prepare Supply of Soapy Water * Disinfect Gloved Hands between Patients * Disinfect Used Gloves before Reuse * Dispose of Waste

African American Grief

African American Grief

African American Grief is a unique contribution to the field, both as a professional resource for counselors, therapists, social workers, clergy, and nurses, and as a reference volume for thanatologists, academics, and researchers. This work considers the potential effects of slavery, racism, and white ignorance and oppression on the African American experience and conception of death and grief in America. Based on interviews with 26 African-Americans who have faced the death of a significant person in their lives, the authors document, describe, and analyze key phenomena of the unique African-American experience of grief. The book combines moving narratives from the interviewees with sound research, analysis, and theoretical discussion of important issues in thanatology as well as topics such as the influence of the African-American church, gospel music, family grief, medical racism as a cause of death, and discrimination during life and after death.

African Camp Fires

African Camp Fires

Stewart Edward White (12 March 1873 – September 18, 1946) was an American author. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan he attended Grand Rapids High School, and earned degrees from University of Michigan (B.A, 1895; M.A, 1903). From about 1900 until about 1922, he wrote fiction and non-fiction about adventure and travel, with an emphasis on natural history and outdoor living. White’s books were popular at a time when America was losing its vanishing wilderness. He was a keen observer of the beauties of nature and human nature, yet could render them in a plain-spoken style. Based on his own experience, whether writing camping journals or Westerns, he included pithy and fun details about cabin-building, canoeing, logging, gold-hunting, and guns and fishing and hunting. In this edition White describes his trip to Africa and adventures on safari in Kenya before the First World War.
