The Countdown to 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive Reveal Is On! Today’s Hot Guy: Kumail Nanjiani

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: the 2017 Sexiest Man Alive will be revealed on Tuesday, Nov. 14! Ahead of the big day, we’re counting down with a handful of hot Hollywood stars who earned spots in the pages of the issue.

Sexiest Husband Kumail Nanjiani, 39, saw his star rise this year with the debut of his film The Big Sick, based on the true story of his relationship with now-wife Emily V. Gordon. But it’s not just her devotion to her — he proposed shortly after she awoke from a medically induced coma just months into their courtship — that makes him sexy, it’s his humor, too.

A tech guy on Silicon Valley, “I did have a tech job for real,” he tells PEOPLE. “For five years in Chicago. I was very bad at it.

“For me, the sexiest part about being a tech guy was leaving the job and not being a tech guy anymore. Even porns don’t have tech guy scenarios: it’s always pizza guys and plumbers. Those are sexy professions. A tech guy would just show up, say, ‘Did you try restarting it?’ and leave before anything really exciting happened. Nobody wants to see that.”

Check out yesterday’s sexy man of the day, 50 Cent. And come back to PEOPLE on Tuesday, Nov. 14, to find out who’s been crowned 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive!

The Countdown to 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive Reveal Is On! Today’s Hot Guy: 50 Cent

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: the 2017 Sexiest Man Alive will be revealed on Tuesday, Nov. 14! Ahead of the big day, we’re counting down with a handful of hot Hollywood stars who earned spots in the pages of the issue.

PEOPLE’s Sexiest Triple Threat, rapper/actor/producer 50 Cent, defines sexy as having confidence.

“I think a lot of a man’s confidence is connected to his accomplishments,” the 42-year-old Power star tells PEOPLE. “I don’t think men are as sexy as women are until we’re successful and it’s publicly noted. But if you can have the confidence to just be yourself … you’ll say things that make women laugh, know they like having you around because your energy is just good. It’s you being you versus you trying to be something.”

What also gives him confidence is being a father to his son, 5-year-old Sire.

“He’s the most important person in my life,” the rapper, né Curtis Jackson, explains. “He’s my motivation.”

Check out yesterday’s sexy man of the day, Kofi Siriboe. And come back to PEOPLE on Tuesday, Nov. 14, to find out who’s been crowned 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive!

Texas Church Shooting 911 Caller Describes How 8-Year-Old Girl Emerged Alive from the Rampage

Soon after Kathleen Curnow called 911 on Sunday morning to report the sound of gunfire at the church across from her house in Sutherland Springs, Texas, her husband went over to investigate amid the gathering first responders.

“I kept waiting for people to come out but no one was coming out. … My husband went to the doors of the church. He’s a strong man, but he said, ‘What I saw I was not prepared for,’ ” she tells PEOPLE.

And then from inside the First Baptist Church — the site of what would become the deadliest mass shooting in modern Texas history — came an 8-year-old girl, brought out by authorities.

Curnow, 43, says the child was “covered in blood and human flesh,” with “a bruise on her forehead.” Curnow tended to her as the details of the rampage became more apparent.

“We kept her on the porch because she was nodding her head and I didn’t want to take her inside and not be able to get her out,” Curnow says.

She continued: “She lost everybody but her stepfather. He came out and he was very stunned and dazed. He saw her and there was a sigh of relief. Her aunt was one of the ones coming late to church. We were able to get them together. I told them to stay as long as they want.

“After that, there were not a lot of people walking out. I was very thankful to learn that many of the people actually escaped from the side or the back. They got to safety at a convenience store close by. If they had stayed, I guarantee they wouldn’t have made it.”

As authorities later detailed, a gunman in all-black tactical gear and armed with an assault rifle began shooting on First Baptist from outside, shortly before 11:30 a.m. Sunday during a worship service, before walking into the church and continuing to fire.

At least 26 people were killed and 20 more injured.

The shooter, identified as 26-year-old former Air Force member Devin Kelley, fled the scene after exchanging gunfire with a local resident outside the church. He died from a gunshot in a neighboring county, though it’s unclear how he received his wound.

No victims’ names have been confirmed or released as authorities continue to work the crime scene, Wilson County, Texas, Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt said during a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Children were among the victims, who ranged in ages from 5 to 72, according to authorities.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

That morning, as Curnow was with the young girl on her porch before her relatives also re-emerged, she says she offered her aid and comfort.

“We were in the shade, I got her apple juice, I was trying to clean her up,” Curnow says. “I asked her, ‘Sweetie what’s your name? Where do you go to school? Do you have brothers and sisters? Do you live close to here? Do you remember any phone numbers?’

“I told her, ‘You’re very very brave.’ “

Don’t Worry, Britney Spears Is ‘Alive And Well’

Despite an earlier report from the Sony Music Global Twitter account that stated Britney Spears was dead, a rep for the singer confirmed to CNN that she was “alive and well.” (Don’t scare us like that, 2016.)

On Monday morning, the Sony account posted a now-deleted tweet reading, “britney spears is dead by accident! we will tell you more soon #RIPBritney  ” Despite the alarming news from the music account, the odd phrasing and use of emoji made the report seem suspicious.

Oddly, or perhaps tellingly, the official Twitter account for Bob Dylan was the only other source for the news of Spears’ death. The announcement used the same crying emoji.

CNN news editor AnneClaire Stapleton tweeted that Spears’ rep confirmed that the singer is indeed alive.

It appears the tweets were posted as a result of a hacking. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a group called OurMine was found to be behind the erroneous information. THR noted that the group was possibly using these hacks as a way to tout its security services.

Spears had last posted on Instagram about hunting and ziplining with her two sons, Sean and Jayden, and her niece, Maddie, for the holidays.

Some good hunting and zip lining for the holidays! Merry Christmas!!

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. Chris Rock: I Won’t Be Alive To See Cops Stop Killing Black Kids

In support of the UK premiere of his flick, “Top Five,” comedian-actor Chris Rock conducted an interview with The Guardian, in which he shared his thoughts on everything from Hollywood’s ongoing diversity issues to Barack Obama’s presidency and police violence against black men in America.

During the interview Rock, who was pulled over by police on three separate occasions over the span of seven weeks, went on to reveal his feelings on America’s string of fatal police encounters.

It’s not that it’s gotten worse, it’s just that it’s part of the 24-hour news cycle. What’s weird is that it never happens to white kids. There’s no evidence that white youngsters are any less belligerent, you know? We can go to any Wall Street bar and they are way bigger assholes than in any other black bar. But will I see cops stop shooting black kids in my lifetime? Probably not.

The Art of Being Alive Series: Live Fully Alive and Awake

2015-01-01-1.jpg
The feature image photo credits: Brie Seavey, Olga Dossa, Gvantsa Mamatsashvili, and Ellie Savoy. (Edited by Adedayo) The image used is with their permission along with their stories submitted for purposes of the book and related work with “The Art of Being Alive” project.

This is a continuation of the first entry in this series “The Art of Being Alive: What does it mean to come Alive?” so if you missed that, please check that out first.

I believe that there are solutions to our anxieties and our fears; and having conversations regarding issues that matter like this creates an avenue for solutions to become apparent.

One of the most prominent motivational speaker today, the bestselling author of The Charge: Activating the 10 human drives that make you feel alive Brendon Buchard has three questions that he says got him awake to life and sparked his desire to live fully alive; he said “At the end of our lives, we will all ask, ‘Did I live?’ ‘Did I love?’ ‘Did I matter?’ How profound! I believe that is the question that will bring us to our realization as to how we choose to come alive and what the “art of being alive” means to us respectively.

It is everyone’s desire to matter, to live fully alive and awake, and one of the ways to start feeling more alive is I believe begins by focusing on as little or much of what our daily practices look and feel like. Just as Mike Murdock quotes that “The secret of our future is hidden in our daily routine,” hence our daily practices matter like gratitude and carving our meaningful connections, our consciousness about how we live, what we eat and who we are, awareness about our environment and awakening to the life we are living is crucial to our happiness and our well-being.

In her book Thrive, Arianna Huffington, a woman I personally admire says:

A life that embraces the third metric is one lived in a way that’s mindful of our eventual eulogy… changing deeply ingrained habits is especially difficult, and when many of these habits are the products of deeply ingrained cultural norms, it is even harder. This is the challenge we face in redefining success…

Only the failure to strategically control the contents of your consciousness keeps you from feeling the consistent internal charge of being fully alive, engaged, connected and fulfilled. — Brendon Buchard

What it means to come alive is to understand the points that we are in our lives, our degree of consciousness, awareness and awakening. What lights us up? What makes us feel free? How are we showing up every day in the world in relation to our goals, ambition and desire? What daily practices and habits are we infusing into our daily lives to optimize our well-being?

Are we connecting socially, are we serving as agents of change towards a greater good or are we just all about self? Are we doing things to improve our physical health like exercise and good nutrition or are we so much disconnected from ourselves that we don’t take notice of the impact of these things? Are we being creative, exercising our creative energies that takes us into a FLOW or are we mindless TV addicts? Do we take time to step out into nature and just appreciate the art of the things that have been given to us free? How are we using our pain experiences to serve us in a purposeful manner, or are we choosing to remain the victim that undermines our experiences which inevitably always serve as the source that brings out our life’s awakenings?

I believe there is so much to explore with the “art of being alive,” I don’t think there will ever be an ending to this project except for constant breakthroughs that will create epiphanies for us. This new quest to define what it means to live fully alive has only just begun. As a result I will be interviewing people from all walks of life and background, to explore what it means to come alive, to feel fully alive and awake to all that life has to offer us.

Your story to how you have found a meaningful way to come alive is needed to make this project viable. Please share your story using this link so your voice can be heard and be part of the game-changers making a difference.

Notes: Three ways you can be a part of the evolving of the project:
1. Be in the book series or a part of the movement by using this form to submit your inspiring story. (Every submission will be used either in the book if submitted early or in the social media feed to promote the movement.)

And only she knows how far she would go to keep her secrets safe. When a documentary producer invites Ani to tell her side of the chilling incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Bradley School, she hopes it will be an opportunity for public vindication. Armed with the trappings of success-expensive clothes, high-poweredbyline, a massive engagement ring-she is determined to silence the whispers of suspicion and blame from her past, and prove once and for all how far she’s come since Bradley. Chris Hemsworth Named People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

NEW YORK (AP) — People magazine has named Chris Hemsworth the “Sexiest Man Alive” of 2014, cheering the Australian actor’s rise as hammer-wielding, bone fide hunk in the “Thor” films.

Hemsworth, who also starred as Formula One racer James Hunt in the Ron Howard-directed “Rush” and the “Star Trek” reboots, was unveiled as the winner on Tuesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” When asked who he wanted to thank, Hemsworth told Kimmel his parents, “for putting this together.”

He joins a list of hunks with the honor, including Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Patrick Swayze, Sean Connery, Ben Affleck, Channing Tatum and Adam Levine. Mel Gibson, another Australian, was the first in 1985.

The 31-year-old star of “Thor: The Dark World” and his 38-year-old wife, Elsa Pataky of “Fast and Furious 6,” have three children. The actor’s younger brother, Liam, stars in the “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Chris Hemsworth told People that the award “bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights” around the house and with his wife. “I can just say to her, ‘Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don’t need to do the dishes anymore, I don’t need to change nappies. I’m above that. I’ve made it now.'”

Playing Along to Stay Alive: Surviving Molestation

This story was written and performed by Darrin Larson for the live, personal storytelling series Oral Fixation (An Obsession With True Life Tales) at The Winspear Opera House in Dallas, on March 17, 2014.

The theme of the show was “Elephant in the Room.”

Trigger warning

“Darrin boldly describes the fateful New Year’s Eve when, at age 14, he is forced to deter a molester and then struggles to deal with the shame that follows,” says Oral Fixation creator and director Nicole Stewart. “What a brave move it was for him to stand on stage and recall that terrible night and then share how it shaped his life and informs his parenting. Read his story here and don’t miss his performance in the video below.”

An hour after ringing in the new year with my first full can of beer, I no longer feel the pleasant numbness that crept over my 14-year-old body and made me laugh and talk too much. There’s now a big, walrus-bearded man lying in bed next to me, his stale breath sailing into my face as his fingers circle uninvited beneath my T-shirt. His hand has found an area unprotected by clothing, bones, hair, or solid muscle, and he traces rings that radiate outward from my belly button like a target.

“This will help your stomach,” Sid whispers.

It’s a softer voice than the one that booms over the counter when he’s selling burgers and cokes to us at the lodge near our weekend cabin, where he jokes with the crowd of kids in wet bathing suits while the moms read books on lawn chairs down by the lake.

Earlier in the night, when we were sitting around his family room drinking beer, I told him I didn’t want to get sick. My older brother spent the night hunched over a toilet the first time he got drunk, and as my own buzz was kicking in, I suddenly worried that I would lose it also.

But my stomach is fine. I stopped after one beer — apparently I’m a lightweight — and I wasn’t worried about throwing up by the time I walked into the bedroom to go to sleep.

When he got he got into the bed with me, I thought it was a joke, like he was pretending to not know that he was in the wrong room, but then he inched in next to me, placed his hand on top of my T-shirt, and started rubbing my stomach.

His fingers began tentatively, with small side-to-side motions that barely went up or down. My heart began to pound, but I remained motionless, as if my stillness could stop him from doing whatever a grown man does when he crawls into bed with a 14-year-old boy. Then his arm slid under my T-shirt, and I felt cold air on my skin as he placed his hand directly on my belly.

Oh God, no.

We’re in his son’s room — Nick, a guy I barely know. He’s a year or two older than me, smells like cigarettes, and looks half-wasted a lot of the time. He invited my older brother over for New Year’s Eve, and I tagged along when I found out there would be beer. We’ve known Sid for a while, and we like him because he’s always saying funny, sarcastic things out of earshot of our parents. We only met Nick a few months ago, when Sid adopted him.

“Man, you’re so lucky,” I told Nick when we got to his cabin. “Your dad is cool with you drinking.” He nodded and gave a short laugh. I hadn’t said anything about the beer to my parents. “We’re going to watch TV and hang out,” I told them. Unlike Nick, I normally played by the rules.

Now Nick is passed out in a bed on the other side of the room. My older brother is in the same condition in the other bedroom, and my parents are miles away, beyond the snow, trees, and darkness surrounding this cabin. That’s where I should be, in my own bedroom, on the top bunk with my younger brother snoring below and our dogs sleeping on the floor by the heater.

It’s quiet except for Sid’s heavy breathing and the things he says in a hushed voice to make me think this is normal. His hairy, beer-bellied wall of a body stretches from the foot of the bed to headboard. He’s at least a half a foot taller than me and three times as heavy, and though I could outrun him on the track or soccer field, I feel trapped and powerless here.

I can’t push his hand away or tell him to stop rubbing me — that would make him mad. I hide my repulsion, my fear, my knowledge that what he’s doing is wrong. See, no problem — I won’t tell anyone. You won’t have to kill me.

“Does it feel better?”

“Yeah,” I say, hoping it will make him take his hand off me and get the hell out of the bed.

His hand keeps moving, though, and my boxers, which I wear around my house at night like pajamas because they cover up what is private, now feel so thin and unprotective.

Maybe he’s not trying to do anything.

No, he’s going lower. Oh God, please make him stop.

His hand finally brushes against the top of my underwear, and I feel the waistband give. A bolt of panic shoots through me and words spill out of my mouth before I can stop them.

“I’m fine. My stomach is fine.” I try to say it gratefully, sleepily, in a way that won’t provoke him.

I roll over on my side toward the wall, and my abrupt shift causes his hand to fall back. I brace myself for him to follow, to ignore my words, but he doesn’t. He sinks back into his side of the bed and after a few minutes of shifting and settling, he becomes still.

I’m not going to fall asleep. I can’t or else his hand will be on my body again, tugging at the elastic boundary that separates inappropriate from criminal. He seems like he’s asleep, but I won’t look and risk stirring him.

After a while, he begins to snore, and my heart descends back into my chest and slows to a resting rabbit pace.

I drift in and out of sleep waiting for morning to come — and for my brother and Nick to wake up so I’m not all alone with him. Staring into the darkness all around me, I’m hounded by the thought that I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t wanted so badly to see what it felt like to get drunk. I try to pray, but it doesn’t work the way it did when I used to ask the small framed picture of Jesus I made in Sunday school to please keep me from getting leukemia like that kid at school. I seem too old for that God, and he seems far away.

By the time the morning light pierces the room’s darkness and secrecy, my muscles are drained from hours of trying to stay alert. I hear my brother get up to go to the bathroom, and when he’s done, Nick follows. I quietly slide to the foot of the bed, careful not to wake up Sid, climb out, and go to the hallway to wait for my turn.

I will not go back in the bedroom or any place alone with that man ever again.

Sid takes us back to our cabin and I pretend like nothing happened as we say goodbye. When my parents ask how things went, I say nothing about the fingers tugging at my boxers. Or the beer. They all go together at this point — things that shouldn’t have happened — and I’m keeping them all a secret.

A couple of days later, we leave our cabin and make the four-hour drive home, farther and farther from Sid. School starts and life gets back on a schedule, and I eventually start to feel like my old self. But underneath it all, in the place where my voice lives, I’ve changed. I don’t trust grown-ups the way I used to, and I’ve lost some of my sense that bad things won’t happen to me.

Several years passed before I told my parents about that night. And when I did, I didn’t even call it what it was. He didn’t cross the line and touch me there, so I said, “I was almost molested.” My mom sounded so devastated that I just left it at that.

But he did cross the line. I was too old to have someone rubbing my tummy to make me feel better and too young to consent to what he wanted to do that night.

For the longest time, I felt weak for not telling him to stop. I didn’t understand why I just lay there. But as I went back to that night in my mind, on the page, and in a therapist’s office, I came to see that what I was doing was trying to survive. I didn’t want to be one of those kids they find buried somewhere after they’ve been molested. If I acted like there was no problem, there should be no reason to kill me.

That night and for years afterward, what he did to me somehow became something I was ashamed of. But it was his actions that were repulsive, not mine. There was nothing for me to feel guilt or shame about.

I don’t know what became of Sid, but I know what became of me. I worked hard at shedding my innocent, good-kid skin — it protects you only when you live in the shadow of mom and dad, not when you have to hold your own with other kids or men who want try to crawl into bed with you. Beer, pot, and anything I could pour into a Coke seemed to be the ticket out of childhood for a while, but eventually I didn’t need them to feel like I was living life on my own terms, standing on my own.

And standing on my own has put me in the position to stand up for others, whether it’s in my career as a public servant, the classes I teach on resolving conflict, the causes I support that combat child and animal abuse, or the stories I tell in front of a microphone.

When I became a father, I made sure my daughter would know how to stand up for herself — and how to listen to the voice inside her that will protect her.

“I didn’t tell anyone about what happened to me, and I should have,” I told her. “If anyone ever tries to do anything to you, tell them they can’t. Tell them no. And don’t be afraid to tell me. I’ll believe you.”

Because of what happened to me that night, I understand why people who’ve been molested are sometimes afraid to speak up. And that’s why I tell this story — for me and for them.

How This Widow Is Keeping Her Husband’s Memory Alive For Their Sons (VIDEO)

During the final season of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Oprah and her team took the show — and one very lucky studio audience — to Australia for the adventure of a lifetime. There was an unprecedented look inside sacred caves, an encounter with some frisky koalas, Hugh Jackman on a zip line… and one particularly unforgettable Aussie couple.

Kristian and Rachel Anderson were college sweethearts living in a suburb of Sydney with their two young boys, Cody and Jakob. Not long before “The Oprah Show” arrived in Australia, Kristian had been diagnosed with liver and bowel cancer, and was literally in the fight of his life. Touched by the couple’s story (which gained attention after Kristian posted a loving video tribute to his wife on YouTube), Oprah had them join her for an episode at the Sydney Opera House and gave them a special surprise.

“We wanted them to spend every ounce of their energy being together and focused on getting well,” Oprah told the Opera House audience, before turning toward the couple. “You shouldn’t worry about the bills… because you will be getting a check for a quarter of a million dollars.”

Sadly, a year after that show, Kristian lost his battle with cancer at age 36. Now, almost three years after his death, Rachel tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” how she and their sons have been coping.

“Since we were on ‘The Oprah Show,’ life is… it’s pretty much turned upside down for us,” Rachel says. “In sad ways and good ways.”

With the $ 250,000 gift, the Andersons felt a great sense of relief and gratitude to be able to spend some incredible quality time together. “We booked a Disney cruise, and went to Disney World and Disney Land,” Rachel says, smiling. “[We] had the most magical time as a family.”

The Andersons made the most of their time together, and after Kristian passed, Rachel was devastated. “It was like living in a black hole,” she says quietly. “I remember waking up the first morning after he died. I remember lying there and seeing his wardrobe open and his clothes all there. Just realizing that was it. That was all that we had left. He was gone.”

In the midst of her grief, Rachel focused on her children, though she often struggled when either of her boys reached a childhood milestone. “About two weeks after [Kristian] died, Cody lost his first tooth and I just remember being devastated that Kristian had missed that,” she says. “It was horrible.”

Because Cody and Jakob were young when their father died, Rachel has remained fiercely dedicated to keeping Kristian’s memory alive. “I work very hard to make sure that he’s part of our day, still,” she says.

It’s something Kristian gave thought to as well. Just after he was diagnosed, Kristian started a blog that is now filled with reflections, stories, triumphs and fears. “It was one of his dying wishes that we would get his blog published so that we had something tangible for the children to have growing up,” Rachel says, holding up a book. “I now have this that the boys can sit down and read, and they can find out exactly how Daddy felt at every, single point in his journey.”

As for Rachel, the mother of two has begun a new chapter in her own journey. During an appearance she made on New Zealand television discussing the book, a man named Richard saw her and reached out. The two began communicating and, eventually, dating.

“He turned out to be the most incredible man,” Rachel says. “In January of this year, we got married. He has a daughter that’s in between the ages of my children, so between us, we have a 5-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 7-year-old.”

Cody and Jakob enjoy their stepdad. “The boys think the world of Richard. He’s a big kid, really,” Rachel says. “He’s just fantastic.”

As the children continue to grow and change each day, Rachel believes Kristian is proud and happy to see their lives continue with love and joy. “I honestly do think that Kristian is watching over us,” she says. “I honestly do think he gets these windows into our lives and gets to see what’s happening. [He’s] taking care of us.”

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

Stephen Collins, ‘7th Heaven’ Star, Still Alive After False Shooting Report On Twitter

Police responded to reports of a gunshot at the Los Angeles home of actor Stephen Collins on Tuesday night, but say reports the “7th Heaven” star had shot himself are untrue.

Collins had been in the news all day after he was reportedly heard on a recording obtained by TMZ confessing to child molestation and exposing himself.

He was then fired from his role on the film “Ted 2,” and resigned from the National Board of the Screen Actors Guild. In addition, the New York Police Department said it was investigating a complaint filed in 2012 over allegations of lewd conduct on an underage girl in 1972.

On Tuesday night, someone reported a gunshot at Collins’ home in the Tarzana neighborhood. The Los Angeles Police Department told Buzzfeed that officers responded, but didn’t find anything.

However, reports spread on social media that Collins had shot himself after former “Baywatch” actress Donna D’Errico, who lives in the same neighborhood, tweeted: “That guy from 7th Heaven lives right around the corner from me & just shot himself a few minutes ago…”

She later deleted the tweet, but it had already been retweeted numerous times — and, in a number of cases, the information was repeated without attribution.

D’Errico later deleted the tweet and apologized for spreading false rumors:

Her mea culpa led to the following responses from the LAPD’s social media coordinator:

New Discovery: Having a Life Purpose Keeps You ‘Stayin’ Alive!’

In the “all things are connected” department, a large-scale longitudinal study has found that people who have a sense of purpose live longer. The research, published in the journal Psychological Science, found that those who had died over the course of the study had reported lower purpose in life and fewer positive relations than did survivors.

Summarized in a report from the Association for Psychological Science, the study also found that having a life purpose consistently predicted lower mortality risk across the lifespan, whether for younger, middle-aged, or older participants.

According to the lead researcher, Patrick Hill, the findings indicate that creating “a direction for life, and setting overarching goals for what you want to achieve can help you actually live longer, regardless of when you find your purpose.” The study examined data from more than 6,000 people, including their self-reported level of purpose in life, across a 14-year follow-up period.

The study also found that a sense of purpose had similar benefits regardless of retirement status, a known mortality risk factor. And, that the longevity benefits of life purpose held up even after other indicators of well-being, such as positive relations and positive emotions, were taken into account. “These findings suggest that there’s something unique about finding a purpose that seems to be leading to greater longevity,” says Hill.

Can You Create a Sense of Purpose?
I think he’s right, but it’s more likely that they are interwoven factors: A sense of purpose is likely inseparable from a positive spirit about living, which infuses both physical and emotional wellbeing over the long-run.

So how can you create a sense of purpose within today’s turbulent, often confusing world? Most people acknowledge there are “parts” of themselves — desires, imaginative capacities — that remain stifled or dormant. Family experiences and conditioning into your beliefs and values often result in a limited, constricted definition of who you are. For example, I often see people who are outwardly successful in their work or relationships, yet feel hollow or unfulfilled. They report feeling “off-track” in some way, or incomplete. They ask if they’ve been on the “wrong” path — the wrong career, the wrong life partner. This reveals their longing for a meaningful sense of purpose in life.

You always retain the ability to open your consciousness to what you want to really live for. Purpose is different from “happiness,” which fluctuates with daily life events. It’s more of an underlying sense of fulfillment, a feeling of integration and direction that transcends life’s disappointments or successes, even. When you’re living in accordance with your life’s purpose, the above fluctuations are simply what you will encounter along the road. They don’t distract you from your larger vision, beckoning you.

Those who have a sense of purpose share some common themes. One is that they aren’t very preoccupied with self-interest, their ego-investments in what they do. Another is that they use their mental and creative energies to serve something larger than themselves. Here are some ways you can learn from them and work towards discovering your own purpose.

Back Off and Tune Inward
Your purpose might be right in front of your eyes but you don’t see it, like looking for your missing keys when they’re in plain sight. Back off to a larger perspective, from outside yourself, and look inward. You might recognize an inclination or leaning that’s always been inside you. Reflect on whether it meshes with what you’ve been doing in your way of life and commitments. Do the latter serves something of meaningful value to you, over the long-run?

Learn From Your Choices and Their Consequences
Your “successes” or “failures” over the years tell you where you’ve been in harmony with yourself — or not. That’s a good indicator of your life purpose because both your good and bad life experiences are lessons: They teach you what you’ve been trying to express throughout your life, directly or indirectly. They can reveal your longings, your inner vision, and show where you’ve gotten “off-track” from your true purpose.

Get on the Path
When you feel a pull towards something more in synch with who you are, internally, pursue it vigorously, with great intent, whether it’s something material or spiritual. Different ways of life embody one’s purpose, for different people. But always look for the feedback your actions give yourself, for guidance. You’ll learn from that feedback if it’s the true path for you or not.

Stretch Yourself
Build momentum towards your emerging sense of purpose by stretching yourself towards it. Create a vision of what it looks like. Imagine it’s a powerful magnet that’s pulling you along a path towards it. Identify what you can do each day that brings you closer. Trust what your heart tells you, especially when your mind says otherwise (“No, you shouldn’t go there; you can’t do it; you won’t be able to learn how”).

Pursue It With Love

Infuse your actions with a spirit of giving, of service. In effect, with love. When expressing your life purpose, think of yourself as giving love for its own sake, without regard for seeking to be loved back or looking for a “return on investment.” Just pursue your purpose with a sense of giving to it, for itself.

The Sufi spiritual leader Hazrat Inayat Khan, who brought his teachings to the U.S. and Europe in the early 1900s, described awakening to your purpose in an interesting way. He wrote that one:

… may suddenly think during the night, “I must go to the north,” and in the morning, he sets out on his journey. He does not know why, he does not know what he is to accomplish there, he only knows that he must go. By going there, he finds something that he has to do and sees that it was the hand of destiny pushing him towards the accomplishment of that purpose which inspired him to go to the “north.”

Seeking your purpose in the form of something larger than yourself, that beckons you, while keeping short-term self-interest at bay, makes you more likely to find and fulfill it — while living a long, healthier life.

‘Mountain Monsters’ Are The Quarry Of Hillbilly Hunters Trying To Bring ‘Em Back Alive

Ever heard of Mothman? Or the Braxton County Monster, Blue Devil, Sheepsquatch, Thunderbirds and Devil Dogs? Not your typical kind-hearted denizens of the forest, these and other mysterious creatures are the targets of a group of hunters known as the Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings, or A.I.M.S.

The six-man A.I.M.S. crew may look like expert moonshiners, but these guys seriously research and hunt odd creatures on their TV series, “Mountain Monsters,” which kicks off its second season tonight on Destination America.

Leading this group is John “Trapper” Tice, who hopes to track and capture some of the most allegedly evasive beasts.

“They’re scary sons of bitches,” Tice told The Huffington Post. “A lot of them make a bellowing, yelling scream at you. The Wolfman did it to us in Kentucky, and just things you see, you know are way faster than we are. We usually have them beat on intelligence, so we have to use our intelligence with old school tracking and reading signs ability with new technology. And we interview a lot of eyewitnesses. That’s how we can get so close to ’em.”

Check out some of the creatures being hunted by the ‘Mountain Monsters’ team.

Native sons of West Virginia who have spent their lives navigating the backcountry make up the A.I.M.S. team. They’ve investigated monster reports in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Ohio, but have captured none.

“Catching one is different [from proving they exist],” said Tice. “In the first place, the guys have jobs, so we usually try to do it in three days, over a weekend and we have limited time. We’ve been very close, and it’s gonna take a bunch of luck, along with a lot of experts to do this. But I think it’ll eventually happen.”

One of Tice’s team members, “Wild Bill” Neff, is a former Marine who looks like he could probably wrestle any number of ferocious creatures to the ground. He doesn’t like the attitude of city slickers who want to go to the forests and start killing unknown animals.

“People from the big cities will overrun a place, and the first thing they’ll say is that they’re gonna kill it,” Neff told HuffPost. “We’ll, we’re not after it to kill it — we’re after it to prove that that animal exists. Anybody who says they wasn’t scared is a lyin’ S.O.B. I was a Marine and I do not fear. Let me tell you something — when they say they don’t fear, they’re lyin’ to ya.”

When this reporter recently sat down with some of the “Mountain Monsters” team and asked if they’ve discovered any real evidence of an unknown animal, Tice offered as his Exhibit A a 2-inch-long tooth (pictured below) he found around 2005 on a trail in Pocahontas County, W.Va. He claims it was from a Bigfoot.

bigfoottooth

Tice has never felt the need to have the tooth analyzed by any scientific organization. He says he just knows what it is.

“I thought it was a bear tooth and Bill and I had both killed bears and knew it was not a bear tooth. It’s not from a domesticated animal — nothing has a tooth like that. On my mantel, I have a skull collection of every wild species in West Virginia, from a bobcat, coyote, bears, all the way down to a gopher — I’ve got ’em all. I was bear hunting at the time, and where his toenails tracked, I seen a little bit of white in the ground and took a knife and dug it out.

“I think it’s an incisor [front] tooth from a Bigfoot.”

Watch the ‘Mountain Monsters’ team at work tracking down unusual creatures.

“Mountain Monsters” begins its second season tonight on Destination America at 10p.m. Check your local listings.

Surrealism Is Alive And Well In Roberto Gil de Montes’ Dreamy Depictions

Roberto Gil de Montes’ paintings exist in a hazy terrain somewhere between Mexico and Los Angeles, art history and folklore, a memory and a dream.

His works are tapestries of life as it exists around us and as it lives in our minds, weaved together into two-dimensional fields. His colors are as buttery and sharp as morning, rendered with the soft edges of a legend partly forgotten. “Hecho en México,” a new series of neo-surrealist artworks, are the perfect antidote to gallery trends and their clever emptiness.

turle

“I paint as a way of discovering stories hidden within myself, peeling away layers, digging deeper each time, revealing images of forgotten stories,” Gil de Montes says in the gallery statement. Gazing upon his artworks feels like traveling through time, unearthing Pre-Columbian symbols and painted allusions without a singular guide to navigate the journey.

Rather than merely depicting the world, Gil de Montes invites viewers to physically experience it,” the L.A. Times wrote in 1996. “His painting’s stark, jarring contrasts and highly animated patterns stimulate your retinas, causing your body to respond well before your brain has a chance to intervene.”

In his works you’ll recognize reincarnations of Paul Gauguin’s “Spirit of the Dead Watching” and Henri Rousseau’s “The Sleeping Gypsy.” Yet scroll further and you’ll see a delicate rendering of a shirtless selfie of two men entitled “Facebook Photo.” Despite the thematic leap from mythical badlands to social media uploads, the sense of mystical possibility lingers. The electric potential lies in every colored mark, each one drawing the viewer deeper into a vibrant land where enchanted tigers and computer screens can coexist.

“Hecho en México” runs from April 5 until May 10 at Lora Schlesinger Gallery in Los Angeles. See a preview of the work below.

“God’s Not Dead” Keeps Its Message Alive

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“God’s Not Dead” (Pure Flix)

“God’s Not Dead” is the latest entry in the Christian/family entertainment market. Directed by Harold Cronk, the movie sends a strong Christian message while being entertaining at the same time. The cast is largely full of lesser known actors with the exception of Kevin Sorbo and Willie Robertson, but all involved play their roles with competence.

The plot involves a college freshman named Josh (Shane Harper) who signs up for a Philosophy class taught by Professor Radisson (Sorbo). On the first day of class Radisson, an atheist, asks the class to sign a statement that “God is dead” so they can skip over that philosophical argument. It must be unanimous by all class members. Josh refuses to sign the statement so Radisson tells him he can have twenty minutes or so in each class session in order to sway the class members to his side. Then there will be a vote by the class as to which side is right.

The challenge is taken though Josh’s parents and his girlfriend (Cassidy Gifford) ask him to just let it go. He researches his belief and does a magnificent job of going head to heads with the professor. Of course this stunning ability to debate such a complex issue strains credibility, but in this movie anything is possible.

There are side issues in this movie involving a young woman facing cancer, another woman trying to convince her atheist boyfriend to accept her Christian beliefs, a third woman going against her parents in order to pronounce her faith. There are a lot of challenges in being a Christian and this movie projects a variety of them.

Sorbo is effective as the atheist professor and Harper is strong as the dedicated Christian student. Willie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty: fame appears as himself in order to make a statement about his beliefs. There is also a solid performance from Tricia LaFache as the young woman with cancer. The musical group Newsboys appear as themselves at the end of the film to present some uplifting songs.

The movie is rated PG for adult themes.

“God’s Not Dead” is not a movie that will appeal to everyone. It is definitely aimed at Christian believers. Still the dramatic context of the script and the talent of the cast could make it entertaining for anyone. It is a bit overdone in the presentation of its message but not as extreme as it could have been.

I scored “God’s Not Dead” a living 6 out of 10.

First Nighter: Conor McPherson’s ‘The Night Alive’ Is Mostly Alive

Kitchen sink dramas have been with us for several decades, which means they’re not as startling as they were when they began rendering obsolescent the prevailing works that examined the lives of the well heeled. This may explain why I could admire the expert acting of the charged events depicted in Conor McPherson’s new entry, The Night Alive, at the Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater, and yet decide on leaving that I hadn’t seen much of anything impressively new.

Perhaps I should say that from where I was sitting, I’m not absolutely certain I saw an actual sink on Soutra Gilmour’s version of a shabby ground-floor room in a deteriorating Edwardian home near Dublin’s Phoenix Park. All the same, I certainly saw McPherson’s bottom-feeding characters bring in plenty of foodstuffs that they more or less prepared over the several days and then months during which the action unfolds.

Tommy (Ciaran Hinds) is the official occupant of the large space — with its narrow bed and other dilapidated furnishings, its upstage stained-glass door to a garden and adjacent door to a bathroom. He’s the kind of man-with-van who makes whatever living he can by doing small jobs. He has no prospects and, more to the point, doesn’t appear to care about acquiring any.

When first seen, Tommy is returning to his digs with Aimee (Caoilfhionn Dunne), who’s holding a towel to her face. She’s been assaulted in a pub brawl. A hooker without a heart of gold but with redeeming features nonetheless, she’s grateful for Tommy’s ministrations but doesn’t want to rely on them more than necessary. She’s a hooker with a heart of self-sufficiency.

She does stick around, however, because she and Tommy slowly establish a romantic interest in each other, which is somewhat endangered by Maurice (Jim Norton, a McPherson vet). He’s the relative from whom Tommy rents his space and who regularly threatens Tommy with eviction. The Tommy-Aimee bond is far more imperiled with the arrival of Kenneth (Brian Gleeson) — as if from Harold Pinter and, specifically, from Pinter’s The Homecoming or No Man’s Land. He’s the abusive boyfriend who dealt Aimee her earlier blows.

Actually, until Kenneth strides chillingly into Maurice’s house, it looks as if The Night Alive isn’t going to amount to much more than a slice-of-life representation of Dublin’s and Ireland’s current societal and economic erosion.

But there Kenneth is, almost instantly picking up a hammer with which he stalks Tommy’s sometime partner Doc (Michael McElhatton), a regular visitor to the household and a freeloader on it. It’s as if Kenneth’s wielding the tool is introduced as an extension — to include blunt instruments — of Chekhov’s theory that a gun once brought on stage must go off, usually causing harm.

The Night Alive suspense then builds on whether Aimee will be able to extricate herself from Kenneth’s sinister demands, which include stealing money Tommy has hidden beneath floorboards. Will she be able to remain with Tommy, or will she continue in Kenneth’s thrall?

The outcome McPherson provides for them is properly ambiguous and doesn’t occur without one highly dramatic event that won’t be revealed here. The event, however, does develop into something that, as indicated, is quite dire, but from which the playwright unconvincingly retreats.

As mentioned, McPherson has imagined three-dimensional figures in Tommy, Aimee, Maurice and Doc. They’re far from upstanding citizens, but they’re appealing in their ways. They’re trying to make something of their lives, and even if the attempts aren’t the wisest they might choose, the benighted folks are worth rooting for. Given their compromised potential, they’re trying to do the best they can.

Kenneth is more two-dimensional. He intensifies McPherson’s drama, but it’s hard not to feel he’s brought in only because McPherson realized he needed something to raise the stakes. Yes, Kenneth’s appearance has been somewhat foreshadowed from the moment the battered Aimee enters without admitting to Tommy the perpetrator of her injuries, but he still feels like more of a device than the others.

At the same time, though, as the proceedings have the old deja view aspect to them — remember that McPherson’s early click, The Weir, had a four-men-one-woman cast — there’s no quarreling with his direction of the ensemble.

Hinds’s imbues Tommy with shady shadings and humane longings, too. (The actor is more authentic here than he was in last season’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof revival.) Dunne’s Aimee, sparrow thin, is admirable for her highly pronounced independent streak. Norton’s nicely balances Maurice’s constant mood swings. McElhatton’s Doc has the right measure of sycophantic weakness and likability. Gleeson encounters no trouble bringing to the surface all the unadulterated evil called for.

So while it’s true that the magnetic effect of the writing, acting and directing quickly dissipates once the lights fade on the intermissionless 90-minutes-plus The Night Alive, the heavy-duty pull it exerts while passing can’t be denied and doesn’t need to be.

Andy Kaufman Is Alive, Says His Brother

Andy Kaufman faked his death, says the legendary comic’s brother.

According to reports, Kaufman’s brother brought down the house at last week’s Andy Kaufman Awards show with a winding tale involving a letter, a favorite restaurant, and this conclusion: Kaufman is alive. And the prankster has a daughter, apparently, who also took the stage, and may or may not be a theater student.

Kaufman is known to have one daughter, Maria Colonna, an occupational therapist living in upstate New York, who occasionally breaks from her life to consult on stories about the mystery of her dad.

But Colonna appears not to have been involved in this latest stunt. The girl who joined Kaufman’s brother onstage also reportedly claimed to be 24 years old. If true, that places her birth date after Kaufman’s official death date. The funnyman is said to have succumbed to lung cancer at Cedars Sinai hospital, on May 16, 1984.

It’s a good time to read HuffPost’s profile of the highest-trafficked Kaufman conspiracy site on the web. Our investigation this summer led us down a rabbit hole constructed by one man who claims to know an awful lot about Kaufman. That includes his whereabouts, tracked down (supposedly) to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Of course, where Kaufman goes, smoke and mirrors follow. But this new theory sounds enough like the one we heard back in May that we’re scratching our heads a bit. Let us know if we’re the only ones.
