‘A Speck in the Sea’: Lobster Fisherman Recounts His Amazing Tale of Survival Alone, Adrift in the Atlantic

If there’s such thing as a worst-case scenario, lobster fisherman John Aldridge found himself smack dab in the middle of it early one morning on July 24, 2013.

Aldridge was alone on deck of the Anna Mary at the time, his longtime fishing partner Anthony Sosinski was asleep below, as the boat motored 40 miles out into the Atlantic on autopilot from Long Island’s Montauk harbor.

Before reaching their first string of traps, the 45-year-old fisherman went to work dragging a massive 200-pound ice chest across the deck with a metal hook placed around the cooler’s plastic handle.

Then it happened.

“I was pulling on it with all my might and the handle snapped,” Aldridge, whose story of survival is chronicled in the recently-released book A Speck In The Sea, tells PEOPLE. “Everything started going by in slow motion.”

Because the stern of their 44-foot vessel had no transom, he stumbled backwards and immediately plunged into the chilly ocean, then watched as the Anna Mary sped away from him in the darkness. His fishing partner was still fast asleep.

“I’m screaming, but nobody heard me,” he says. “All of a sudden, I was alone watching the lights fade away. There was nothing in the ocean but me.”

Aldridge panicked as his heavy rubber boots began to fill with water, so he yanked them off, emptied the water out and transformed them into a makeshift life vest. It was just after 3:30 a.m. and he began to shiver as the 72-degree seawater drained the heat from his body.

In the moonlight while treading water to keep afloat, he could make out the dorsal fins of two blue sharks circling him.

“They kept swimming back and forth on the surface,” recalls Aldridge, who clutched his pocket knife, telling himself he’d fend the sharks off with the tiny blade if they tried to attack. “I just kept spinning around in circles, trying to see them when they disappeared under the surface.”

It didn’t take long for Sosinski to realize that Aldridge had fallen overboard when he awoke at 6 a.m., nearly three hours after Alridge had plunged into the sea. He immediately radioed the Coast Guard and announced, “This is the Anna Mary. We’ve got a man overboard.”

It quickly became a race against the clock. The Coast Guard calculated that Aldridge could survive roughly 19 hours in the water before hypothermia would set in, causing his body temperature to plummet and his muscles to give out. Few people, Sosinski learned, survived even half that long under the conditions Alridge was facing.

As a Coast Guard helicopter scanned the water from above, Sosinski put the call out to other fishing boats in the area, asking for their help. But finding him was like looking for a needle in a haystack since it was unclear exactly when and where Aldridge had fallen into the sea.

But after about two hours, Sosinski spotted the broken handle on the cooler and pieced together what happened. Factoring in the tides and currents, he did some calculations and came up with a “guess” regarding where he believed Aldridge might be. Before long, 21 commercial fishing boats were in the area, desperately searching for a man that many believed might already be dead.

But Aldridge was still very much alive — and fighting to stay that way. His brush with the sharks and the panic that followed quickly forced him to realize that his only hope of survival was to keep his mind calm and focused.

“I realized that I needed to get into a whole other mindset to keep myself from freaking out totally,” he says. “So I just started setting goals for myself. Instead of being so overwhelmed by the whole situation, I broke things down into different categories. The first thing I told myself is that I’ve got to stay alive until sunrise. And once I make it to daylight, I’ll figure out the next goal.”

By daybreak, he spotted a buoy and used his knife to cut it free, eventually tying it to another buoy he encountered after hours of treading water and being pulled along by the currents.

As the morning dragged on, he stayed afloat using the buoys and his inflated boots. In the distance, he spotted a number of fishing boats and realized they were searching for him. “But no one was seeing me,” he says. “I was just a speck in the sea.”

The hours passed and, despite his focus, Aldridge realized he was tiring. If he wasn’t rescued by sunset, he planned on tying himself to the buoy in the hope that someone would find eventually his body. “I was running on heavy adrenalin,” he recalls thinking. “But I knew my body was deteriorating.”

Two more hours passed and the Coast Guard rescue helicopter that had been searching for Alridge for most of the day was nearly out of fuel. When Aldridge spotted it overhead, he started “waving and kicking like crazy.”

By the time he was plucked out of the sea, his body temperature had dropped to 93 degrees. He credits his survival to his rubber boots—and his ability to control his mind.

“I got a crash course in positive thinking,” says Aldridge, whose odyssey is now being made into a feature film. “But positive thinking really freaking works. I’m living proof.”

The Most Outrageous And Amazing Fashion At The 2017 Billboard Music Awards

Much like the Grammys, the Billboard Music Awards are a place for celebrities to wear pretty much whatever they want on the red carpet.

At the 2017 BBMAs on Sunday night, Halsey took that message to heart ― showing up in a bra, a skirt fashioned out of what looked like a trench coat, and heels that laced up all the way to her thighs. Singer Dencia wore what some likened to a Rubik’s Cube, while Celine Dion wowed in a white dress with built-in angel wings.

Take a look at all of the amazing and outrageous looks below:

Amazing Dance Photos From Musicals That Won Best Picture

Whether “La La Land” — and its history-making turn this awards season — has you celebrating or bemoaning its winks at classic American musicals, there’s no denying the Damien Chazelle–directed film has made its mark. It’s up for a record-tying 14 awards at the 89th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 26, including Best Picture.

It isn’t common for a production with singing and dancing to snag the Oscars’ top spot — the last to do so was “Chicago” in 2003. We wanted to look back at some of the other movie-musicals that took home the Best Picture statue over the years. Here are four of them:

“The Broadway Melody” (1929)

This was one of the first musicals to be seen on screen and the first sound film to ever take home the Best Picture statue at the 2nd Academy Awards. “The Broadway Melody” remains only one of three films in Oscars history to take home Best Picture and no other awards.

”The Great Ziegfeld” (1936)

This flashy film was a cinematic adaptation of Broadway’s “Ziegfeld Follies.” It took home Best Picture along with Best Actress and Best Dance Direction at the 9th Academy Awards, but critics at the time called it “a bit wearing” for its length and the story “fragmentary and, in some places, confused.”

”An American in Paris” (1951)

Imagine a movie today where 17 minutes of screen time was devoted to a single dance. “An American in Paris” pulled it off, with its famous ballet scene making it a memorable winner of the 24th Academy Awards. The film stands the test of time, boasting a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“West Side Story” (1961)

The skirts! The tough guys! The finger snaps! The film adaptation of the “Romeo and Juliet”-esque 1957 Broadway musical won 10 of its 11 nominated categories at the 34th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. It’s the winningest musical in Oscars history — and to that, we say, Krup you!

This Amazing Video Is Taking Voguing Out Of The Club And Into The Streets

Voguing, the classic queer dance, takes center stage ― but off stage and off the runway ― in a stunning new video entitled “HANDS.”

Creator Kemar Jewel, who previously released “Voguing Train,” told The Huffington Post that the video is intended to help people understand that no matter who you are or how you identify, voguing can be a part of your life.

“The beauty of taking vogue and putting it into everyday life is that it helps to reveal the people who are apart of voguing and ballroom culture as apart of society,” Jewel told The Huffington Post. “Seeing voguing in parks, schools, bars, and churches (shameless plug for my next video) helps to bring awareness that this style of dance is used to celebrate life and self-expression.”

Check out “HANDS” for above. Missed “Voguing Train”? Head here to check it out.

Princess Victoria Looked Amazing in an Under-$100 ASOS Dress

A pregnant Princess Victoria just reminded us that sometimes stellar style needn’t cost much at all. The royal just stepped out in Peru wearing a star print dress from ASOS that costs $ 99 (and is still available to shop!). The maternity style is perfect for expectant moms thanks to the cinch empire waist, ideal for positioning wherever an individual bump requires. Don’t forget Kate Middleton mined the budget-friendly retailer too, rocking this polka dot maternity style when pregnant with Princess Charlotte.

princess-victoria-asos-star-dress-pregnant

The dress currently for sale on the ASOS site is a maxi, whereas Victoria is clearly in a shorter version. It’s possible that her style has sold out or is not yet available yet, but more likely she’s pulling the Kate Middleton-beloved royal switcheroo trick, altering an off-the-rack piece to make it fit for a specific occasion.

The other recent royal style moment we’re still drooling over? Kate Middleton’s stunning lace Dolce & Gabbana dress!

14 Amazing Vintage Photos of Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, and More ’90s Supermodels

Seeing Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, and other ’90s supermodels reunite for a pretty epic photo shoot yesterday got us feeling a bit nostalgic for the days when Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington sashayed down the runways, wore the most amazing clothes, and basically made life look like the ultimate party. They were the OG Girl Squad!

Today’s top models, such as Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, and Gigi Hadid are carrying on the torch of the model sisterhood (with a much appreciated dose of Taylor Swift!)—and the best part is: We all get to watch it happen on Instagram.

But since Instagram wasn’t around in the ’90s (can you imagine?!), here are 14 vintage photos of your favorite ’90s fashion plates that’ll have you wanting to tap “like” over and over again:

Why Everyone Is Talking About Fan Bingbing’s Amazing Style

Students of red carpet glamour have certainly become familiar with Fan Bingbing—but everyone else? Get ready to have a new red carpet fave. The 33-year-old Chinese actress long-ago conquered international best-dressed lists (she was on Vanity Fair‘s tony Best Dressed list in 2012), but now she’s poised to get a bit more mainstream—Forbes just handed her the number four spot on its list of the year’s highest-paid actresses, reporting that she’s net a cool $ 21 million in 2015. For movie stars, there’s a pretty legit correlation between salary and red carpet know-how, so it’s no surprise that the well-paid actress has had plenty of time to nail formal wear, typically picking super-glam gowns.

fan-bingbing-marchesa-dress-cannes-2015

We fell in love with her fairytale princess, blossom-covered Marchesa gown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but trust: It wasn’t an outlier, by any means.

fan-bingbing-ralph-russo-cannes-2015

A busy festival schedule had her packing multiple showstoppers. This Ralph & Russo couture beauty, with a long train and sleeves that draped elegantly behind her, was one of the red carpet’s most stunning numbers. Her jewels were by Chopard and clutch by Louis Vuitton (she’s an ambassador for the brand).

fan-bingbing-red-velvet-dress-shanghai-film-festival-2015

For the Shanghai Film Festival this summer she picked a velvet Stéphane Rolland couture gown with a partly sheer skirt. Her jewels are Chopard.

fan-bingbing-pink-marchesa-dress-oscars-2013

She wore Marchesa again to the Oscars in 2013, picking a vivid fuchsia ball gown that had walked down the label’s runway just days earlier.

fan-bingbing-dress-elton-john-oscars-party-2013

And because two gorgeous gowns are always better than one, Bingbing changed before heading to Elton John’s post-ceremony party. Her peach Elie Saab couture gown had a regal embellished capelet that covered her shoulders and a skinny belt worn right at the waist. Her clutch is Roger Vivier.

fan-bingbing-elie-saab-yellow-dress-cannes-2013

For the Cannes red carpet that same year, she picked another strong solid-colored beauty. Her Elie Saab gown was a dusty goldenrod hue and featured an embellished top and belted waistline.

fan-bingbing-elie-saab-cannes-2012

For the Shanghai Film Festival this summer she picked a velvet Stéphane Rolland couture gown with a partly sheer skirt. Her jewels are Chopard.

She wore Marchesa again to the Oscars in 2013, picking a vivid fuchsia ball gown that had walked down the label’s runway just days earlier.

8 Amazing New Handbag Brands That Will Inspire You to Go Shopping Now

street-style-bags

If there’s one thing we learned from the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag phenomenon, it’s that when you find a bag you love, buy it immediately or risk being waitlisted.

So whether you’re still on the waitlist for a Mansur Gavriel bag or are simply on the hunt for a terrific everyday handbag, scope out these styles from eight new brands we’re beyond excited about.

gunas-handbag

The Brand: Gunas New York

The “It” Bag: The Flamingo satchel, $ 165
Why We Love It: This vegan bags hits all the high notes: Great color, silhouette, lots of details and it’s affordable.

mandy-chang-handbag

The Brand: Mandy Chang Design Studio

The “It” Bag: The Pushing The Envelope tote, $ 480
Why We Love It: It’s no surprise that this bag earned the top prize at the Independent Handbag Awards earlier this month. It’s angular, but graceful at the same time. It’s an ideal work bag.

little-liffner-bag

The Brand: Little Liffner
The “It” Bag: The Saddle Up bag, $ 279

la-contrie-handbag-1

kara-bag

The Brand: Kara

The “It” Bag: Large Stowaway Bag, $ 390
Why We Love It: If you love the look of a minimal bag, but prefer something unstructured (a.k.a. the bag you can stuff everything but the kitchen sink into), this is your best bet. Plus, the zip closure is ideal when you’re wearing it cross body, so no one can tell that you’ve packed your gym clothes among other unmentionables in there. Don’t worry, we won’t tell either.

Speaking of stuffing your bag, here’s the ideal way to stuff your carry on, according to the Man Repeller:

Amazing Video Sums Up The Hilarity That Is Kids’ Sports

For parents, summer means beach trips, barbecues and adorable little kids playing T-ball. Although, anyone who’s watched Little League and the like knows that young children’s sports games are not always thrilling.

In fact, it’s quite remarkable when the “wee warriors” manage to make an actual play.

The Holderness family put together a spot-on video about 5-year-old Penn Charles’ T-ball team as part of their new series “SmallStars” — “a hilarious look at youth sports.”

The video has all the makings of a classic ballgame — from the outfield players lounging in the grass to the infielders chatting about lightsabers to the hitter making a run for it way beyond the first base.

Ultimately, the game ends on a high note, as the narrator declares, “They don’t keep score, but everybody wins today. Time to hug Mommy.”

Stuart Weitzman Shares How Blissfully Amazing It Is Working With Gisele

Stuart Weitzman is so devoted to Gisele Bundchen as his campaign star that news about her retiring didn’t make him flinch for an instant.

“I think it was pretty clear that she was referring to runway shows, and since we had engaged her in a contract, we knew her retirement wasn’t taking into account the kind of work she was doing for us,” he told Glamour. “We didn’t need to make a phone call for clarification on that one.”

stuart-weitzman-with-gisele-on-set

Weitzman with Gisele on-set

Phew, right? The designer also made it sound like we don’t need to worry about the bombshell disappearing from the brand’s sexy-sophisticate black-and-white ads any time soon.

“I’m not sold on the principle that you should change your model every year and a half or so. We haven’t gotten to the point where we think our products don’t look good on Gisele, especially in the winter season when we believe very strongly in fashionable boots,” he said. “I’m sure there are other gorgeous legs out there, but we don’t know them. She shows those boots off so beautifully, there was no decision; it was like, ‘OK, let’s keep going. This is working out very well.’ Evidently she likes working for us, [and] she makes things very easy for us.”

Weitzman previously revealed to Glamour that it was Gisele who predicted the runaway success of his flat over-the-knee-boots. The super asked to take the pair she shot in home, caused a paparazzi frenzy three days later, and promptly reported back that he better stock up.

gisele-stuart-weitzman-over-the-knee-boots

To hear him tell it, shoe hits are less about luck than thoughtful prediction and expert naming. “I probably spend as much time thinking about the name as I do designing. That’s why the Nudist is called the Nudist,” he said while discussing the new super-high style Gisele wears in the fall 2015 ads: the AllLegs. And if shoes were a betting game, the world would do well to place some money on the new guys. Gisele has given them her endorsement.

“She loved this new boot that was about six inches higher up the thigh, so it was almost like a pair of leggings,” he explained about the super and the new boot. “They hug and stretch on the legs like a pair of leggings. Women are so used to that kind of attire these days that it was not radical to put on a pair of boots that felt like leggings. [Gisele] loved the new one that goes up a little higher.” He referenced shoe-selling 101—”the higher the boot the more limited the sale”—but said that universal appeal isn’t always the top priority.

“I like to get confirmation from the kind of customer for whom I’ve designed a certain kind of product. When we go to shoots with a lady like Gisele and before that Kate Moss, I’m trying to create a product for a specific kind of lady. ‘Is that model or actress that kind of girl?’ I like to hear what they say when they see it. Gisele loves clothes, she loves fashion, but she’s not a crazy fashionista. She loves new, clean, sexy products that girls can wear that way.” Where his recent tall-boot hits have designed with a woman like Gisele in mind, he pointed to the equally successful knee-high flat gladiator sandals as being done for Moss.

gisele-fall-2015-stuart-weitzman-campaign

Gisele in the fall 2015 campaign

Across the fashion-editor and consumer populations, Weitzman is revered for creating stylish shoes that are actually comfortable, no small feat when you think of the gorgeous shoes you might have painfully paraded around in. It’s something he thinks about frequently, with staffers sharing a favorite office tale of how he’s been known to stop women on the street wearing his shoes to ask how their feet feel.

“I’ve recognized for a long time that the final vote of anything I design is cast by you, as the consumer,” he said. “We can love it, we can make as many samples as we want and put it in the stores, but if the woman doesn’t say ‘I’ll take these,’ we didn’t guess right.”

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Amazing ‘90s Costumes in Dope

dope-1

As we’ve learned from films like Sex and the City, The Great Gastby, and An Education, the costumes in some movies can often make as big of an impact as the performances (or the plot!).

Dope, the Sundance breakout hit about ’90s-obsessed kids who live in Inglewood, California and get caught up in a drug deal gone bad, is no exception. High-waist jeans, bamboo earrings, boxer shorts exposed Marky-Mark style, and tons of plaid shirts pepper the present day-set film. So, yes, while we cannot wait to see the stars of Dope—Shameik Moore, Kiersey Clemons, and Tony Revolori—make their movie debuts, we’ll admit the costumes have us equally excited. Here are fun facts to know about the movie’s seriously buzzed-about outfits.

Patrik Milani is the person behind Dope‘s costumes: The Italian costume designer is relatively new to the movie game, though, having only worked on four films prior to this.

Milani found his inspiration on social media: He told The Fader, “The main research I did was going to Instagram and looking under #Inglewood, #InglewoodHigh, and #InglewoodProm. I got into all of these peoples’ accounts and started following real kids who were students. Obviously I would pick the people who were more fashionable. That was a lot of really good research. I’m almost 45, what am I going to do? Hang out at high schools? I printed everything and showed it to the director and he was like, “Oh my god.”

Major players in ’90s hip-hop culture also served as inspiration: “Aaliyah was a big point of reference for Diggy,” Milani shared with I-D. “I wanted to help draw out her feminine side in a way that felt authentic for the character. At first, I was thinking more along the lines of Missy Elliott, but I wanted to create a more feminine silhouette. Aaliyah was so sexy even though she wore baggier men’s clothes, so Diggy stemmed from there. I also looked a lot at NWA for Tony [Revolori]’s character, Jib.”

Many of the pieces were actually sourced on eBay: In an interview with The Examiner he said, “Vintage stuff is so rare, that I found myself up late at night bidding on auctions on eBay—just to find the right pieces for the film.” Milani also hit up local West Coast shops. He shared with Refinery 29, “There’s a store in Sun Valley where I got a poncho for one of the characters for $ 3. I mean, $ 3 in Sun Valley! I think if you have a good eye, you don’t have to spend a lot of money.”

Pharrell also played an influential part in creating the costumes: As the executive producer the CFDA Fashion Icon helped take the costumes to the next level through his connections. “I only met Pharrell once, but I was dealing with his producer, Mimi Valdes,” Milani told Complex. “When she came on, she said my friend has this website Karmaloop, you can order anything you want. Since this is an independent movie, that really opened up my budget. The main kids, I had already shopped for, but the website really helped make the movie be what it is. Having Pharrell involved opened up a whole new world to me.”

There was one very specific ’90s trend Milani would not touch: “I knew I couldn’t revisit MC Hammer. I mean, it was scripted, but also, I just didn’t love that look, so I stayed away from it on purpose,” he told Refinery 29.

The Amazing Balancing Man

The Amazing Balancing Man

The Amazing Balancing Man By David Linden This is the personal story of one person balancing pursuing his dreams and putting bread on the table. Born during the Great Depression to a barber and a homemaker in Albany, New York, David’s prospects were not very bright. However, his parents, who immigrated from Russia and Austria shortly after World War I, instilled in him the belief that you could do anything you wanted, as long as you did the work needed to prepare for it. He left high school before graduating to work and bring in a little extra income to help out the family. This was his first balancing act: finish high school or help the family. It wasn’t a lot of money, but it helped stretch the family budget a bit, and taught him valuable lessons about doing every job as well as he could and always trying to do better. David, it turns out, was an excellent salesman, regularly winning bonuses and recognition for tripling and quadrupling a department’s sales. Whenever he needed to put bread on the table or a roof over his head, David could always get a job as a salesman. He was very good at it, but was not particularly passionate about sales. As a teenager, David enjoyed participating in all sports and started developing a love of physical fitness, reveling in what he could get his body to do – and enjoying the cheers of the crowd when he made a great play. It was while learning and practicing diving and some basic gymnastics at a local park with a pool that he started becoming aware of the strength and gratification he received from cheers and applause, especially from the attractive girls. When the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus was came to town and he saw Ove Unus “The Talk of the Universe” perform a one-finger handstand and heard the thunderous applause, David knew that was what he passionately wanted to do – perform acrobatics for live audiences! He taught himself the art, building up the necessary physical and mental skills, watching others perform,

Confirmation: Dressing Kate Middleton is Absolutely as Amazing as You’d Think

When I got to sneak backstage after Friday’s Zimmermann show to talk to the designer, you know what I had on my must-ask-about list: Kate Middleton. The duchess put the Australian label firmly on the map when she wore its crisp white eyelet dress Down Under last April.

kate-middleton-white-zimmermann-eyelet-dress-australia

“That definitely would have been one of the biggest things that’s happened to us in 20 years of business,” designer Nicky Zimmermann told me with a grin. “It affected our parents, our family. Everybody loved it! If you’re Australian, British royalty is a big deal and it meant a lot to a lot of people. She’s the epitome of a sophisticated, beautiful young woman, and we are massive fans.”

Nicky was on holiday with her fam when Kate decided to wear the frock (typically designers and brands have no idea that a major celeb is going to wear a piece until they’re out and being photographed).

“I was walking through caves with my children with no communication,” she said when I asked when and where she found out. “I got back to the house and every person that I was with, their phones were going berserk. We flipped on the news and ‘Kate Middleton Wears Zimmermann on Manly Beach’ was the title.”

Ahh! I can’t even imagine how thrilling that moment must have been.

If you’re wondering what Kate could wear from the just-debuted fall collection, I’m one step ahead of you.

zimmermann-fall-2015-bright-print-maxi-dress
I’d love to see her in this multi-colored gown. The ruffles at the shoulders and voluminous skirt moved so beautifully on the runway, I’m sure the magic would be repeated on a red carpet or stepping out of one of the monarchy’s cars.

zimmermann-fall-2015-brown-suede-dress-hat
The neckline of this suede beauty is a little too low for Kate, but I think she’d look fantastic in it.

Could you see Kate in either of these fall designs? Ever wondered how crazy exciting it must be to realize that someone so famous is wearing something you created?

The Scoop on the Music Industry’s Most Amazing Costumes, Ever

The Grammys are this weekend and along with all the red carpet style, you can count on the stage performances having some major moments too. Some costumes are gorgeous, others are scandalous, but it’s all always just a little over-the-top and made for a specific purpose: to shock and delight us. Designer Marco Marco has worked with mega popstars (do the names Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea, or Jennifer Lopez ring a bell?) and now, he’s answering my questions about what goes into all that gorgeous stuff.

katy-perry-green-leaf-costume-prismatic-tour

Glamour: What’s been your favorite piece that you’ve worked on so far?

Marco Marco: Whatever I’ve just completed is always my favorite. I’m totally fickle and forget about everything I’ve ever done as soon as I’m doing something new.

Glamour: What was the trickiest thing you’ve ever done, whether while planning or actually constructing?

MM: Years ago when I was working for the Black Eyed Peas, Will.i.am wanted subwoofers that would turn into “robot” dancers in a Transformers kind of way. I had to develop a way that the dancers could fit into these speaker boxes and break into androids without interrupting the choreography. Many cardboard boxes were harmed in the making.

Glamour: Anything that looked simple but was actually tricky?

MM: We’ve been making these chiffon and organza tops for Florence Welch that look fairly simple, but take an extremely patient hand and a high level of technical ability. Other than that, I would say that the most hair-pulling happens with dancer costumes, which are often just as intricate if not more than the artist’s, but get no real air time.

Glamour: What’s your role in the artist’s total process, whether for a music video or a performance?

MM: Every artist has her own version of the creative process. Typically, I come into it after they have an aesthetic direction, and it’s my task to interpret their concepts into illustrations, and eventually, reality. With tours, I’m brought in much earlier as there are so many more costumes and a lot more logistics in terms of changes and times. With videos, there’s always a stylist who is coordinating all of the looks for everything and then I’m asked to make a specific piece.

Glamour: Any tricks you’ve used for a costume that looks risqué, but is never at risk of anything falling out or flipping up?

MM: We use a variety of different fabrics that are extremely sheer or flesh-like in order to mimic skin in places where we can’t have the real thing. Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora’s “Black Widow” performance looks used these techniques.

Glamour: What’s your background?

MM: I received a bachelor’s in theatrical design with an emphasis in props and costumes from Cal Arts. When I moved out to LA I had a small custom boutique where I got a lot of experience with different body types. Eventually, I got into television and commercials and started working for American Idol. That is where I fell in love with the music industry and making costumes for musical performances.

Glamour: Do you watch concerts or shows with pieces you’ve designed?

MM: I never watch anything more than once and I always try to watch from a television or screen so I can see it the way it’s going to be seen by everyone else, even if I’m backstage or on set. I’m pretty emotionless until it’s done. Anything can happen from the time you start until they walk on stage. I’ve made hundreds of things that never ended up making it all the way through the process, so the first and only time I allow myself to get excited about a piece is the moment they step out in it and there’s no turning back.

Have you seen any concerts with costumes that were particularly fantastic?

Little Man Max Charles Tackles Big Roles in American Sniper and The Amazing Spider-Man

2015-01-04-MaxCharles_Headshot_PhotoByLesleyBryce.JPG

Young performer MAX CHARLES has won over hearts with his portrayal of the young Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel. Currently, you can see Max as Bradley Cooper’s son in American Sniper by Clint Eastwood. Photo By Lesley Bryce.

Max Charles has a resume longer than his arm. This confident young man is not only adorable, but a pleasure to interview!

Let’s see – Max is in the recently released feature film American Sniper, just did an episode of the controversial TV series Constantine and oh, you may remember him as the young Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-man movies.

But wait! There’s more! Read on to find out more about Max Charles!

Tell us about Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas. What was your audition like?

It was a fun movie to do, because I got to sing and that was cool. It was my first musical, and I really liked doing this so I hope I get to do another one. I also got to see how stop motion animation works and visit the studio. I was offered this role, so there wasn’t an audition for me on this one.

Who helps you decide which roles to audition for?

I have an awesome team. We all talk about what projects are the best for me to work on for my career and which ones to pass on.

You’ve done an episode of the TV series Constantine which has gained a lot of criticism for the main character not being true to the comic book character. Do things like this make you wonder if other super hero characters that we see on TV and film today are not like they were written in the comics? Who is your favorite super hero?

My favorite super hero has always been Spiderman. I even dressed up as him for Halloween when I was three years old, so it was really cool to play young Spiderman. I like the super hero comic books and I like to see what the actors do creatively with the characters and how they bring these superheroes to life in the movies.

When you went up for the role in The Amazing Spider-man 2, did you KNOW it was for the Spider-man movie or was the casting call very vague?

When I first auditioned for The Amazing Spider-man, I didn’t know that it was to play young Peter Parker or that it was for the movie The Amazing Spider-man the first couple of auditions. Then I found out what movie it was when I was going back for producers’ sessions. Then I had a couple of meetings with Marc Webb and Avi Arad before I got the call that I got the role. I was also pretty excited, when I found out I was coming back for The Amazing Spider-man 2!

Describe your audition for Spider-man.

The first couple of auditions were with the casting director then I had a couple of callbacks with producers. Then I had a couple of meetings with Marc Webb and Avi Arad, before I was offered the role. I had to learn sides [pieces of script] for each audition, and then I met with Marc Webb a couple of times and he directed me to see how we worked together. Marc was awesome to work with and he’s an amazing director. It was cool to work on this huge project as my first feature film. It was pretty cool to be the first person to ever play young Spider-man too.

How does your schooling work?

I’m in 5th grade, and I have a set teacher when I’m working on projects so I never really miss school. My favorite subject is math. When I finish my school work for the day I like to go play basketball, ride my bike or skateboard, play video games or go free running.

How and when did you get started in show business?

We were living in Tennessee and my brother Logan was starting to pursue his singing career. A producer saw his website and called him out to come do an audition in California when I was six years old. Me, my mom and my brother came out to California together and he did the audition then started doing more. I would always listen through the door at his auditions and beg my mom to let me do some auditions too. Amazing Spider-man was my first feature film audition so it was cool to book that. I also booked my first TV role and commercial then and that was True Blood and Mercedes Benz commercial.

Besides acting, what activities do you enjoy?

Besides acting I like free running, skate boarding, biking, basketball and I like to play Xbox One. My favorite games on Xbox are racing games mostly. I actually have a really cool skateboard that looks just like Peter Parker’s because my brother Mason made it for me for my birthday two years ago.

You play Bradley Cooper’s son in American Sniper which came out December 2014. What did you do for the holidays?

It was great to work with Bradley Cooper and Clint Eastwood on American Sniper and I’m excited for everyone to see this movie.

I’ll be home for a couple of weeks at Christmas and we’ll just be hanging out with family and friends. We always go cut down our Christmas tree and we have a big turkey dinner, like we do at Thanksgiving.

When did you join SAG-AFTRA?

I think I joined SAG-AFTRA when I was six years old. I don’t recall having any direct contact with any union representative on set, but I know we worked under their guidelines.

You did the voice of Sherman in the 2014 film Mr. Peabody & Sherman. How do voice overs work? Did you ever see the original cartoons?

After I booked the role of Sherman I watched some old episodes from the original series. It was cool to see the old Sherman. I worked in a studio at Dream Works in Los Angeles for this project and recorded for about 2-1/2 years. Most of the time in a voice over you record by yourself with just the director. Rob Minkoff was fun to work with and an amazing director. I got to do one recording session with Ty Burrell and that was the first time I met him. It was really fun because our first scene was the one where we had to yell at each other. When we were done with the scene, we said “Hey, nice to meet you,” and we just started laughing.

Now that the world knows who you are, do you have any fear about being safe?

I have an incredible support network, who always watch out for me and protect me.

Are your friends supportive of your decision to be an actor?

Everyone has been really supportive about my career so far. When I’m with friends, we just do normal kid things like video games or shoot hoops.

Do you travel a lot for work? Where is your home base?

I travel a lot to work on different projects, and my mom always comes with me. I was born in Dayton, Ohio and we live in Los Angeles, but it’s fun to visit different places and meet new people.

Any advice for actors your age?

I would tell people my age to believe in your dreams and never give up!

‘Amazing’ Is in the Eye of the Beholder

powerranger2

by guest blogger Renee James, humorist and blogger

Many things sound so much better in theory than they turn out to be in reality. Unfortunately, you usually can’t tell if that’s the case until you’re in the midst of the experience. Then it begins to dawn on you that, in fact, you’re in a bleak situation, or you at least made a dumb decision, and things are not as amazing as you pictured.

This was definitely true about a day many years ago when my boys and I spent several hours standing in line (the likes of which I’ve not seen since) to meet the Green Power Ranger at a local tire and auto business. I can kind of laugh about it now, but we weren’t laughing then.

We drove by the business holding this event every day. Once the boys heard the news about the Power Ranger appearance, their energy and enthusiasm for meeting one of their heroes was unleashed. Every time we passed the parking lot, they’d check it out for some sign of the rapture to come. When a tent appeared, along with a sign depicting the Green Ranger, they practically leaped out of their booster seats with anticipation.

How I drew the lucky straw on this adventure is still unclear. But it was on a Saturday, and we do have an institution called Penn State football; that probably factored into the decision about which parent would share the joy. So there we were, three boys who couldn’t have been much more the 4, 4 (twins), and 5 years old–maybe even younger–along with their mother, who’d planned to be in and out of there in about half an hour. Just the four of us–and another thousand kids with their moms or dads.

It took us the better part of four hours to inch around the building, getting closer and closer to the tent that concealed the GPR. For long gasps of time, the line simply did not move. At all. There came a point when I wondered if we should leave or stick it out. I figured if the boys could stand it, I could, too.

We were well into hour three before we stepped through the flaps of the tent to behold the superhero himself. By now, the boys had practically collapsed with exhaustion. Their dispositions held up remarkably well–better than mine, in fact– but their little legs were simply worn out from standing, mostly immobile, for hours.

Lucky for us, we have a Polaroid photo commemorating (see above) the event. Three boys, clearly thrilled and proud, surround a Green Power Ranger sitting in an armchair looking not unlike a green Santa, with what appears to be one of the auto center’s spare tires under his costume. It was comical. All this time, effort, and promotional energy–not to mention a thousand excited young fans–and this was the payoff? I guess a chubby green ranger was better than no ranger at all.

A few months later, it was a Power Ranger Christmas Miracle at our house, complete with figures, weapons, and genuine leatherette gloves that played the “PR” theme song with the swipe of your hand. The boys insisted on wearing them to church that morning, and I cringed several times as we heard them in concert with Christmas carols.

Fast-forward to 2014. There have been no action figures in our house on Christmas morning for many years. So why do I want to frame that Polaroid and pull it out every year, just to show them, just to remind them…of what? Childhood heroes? Their exuberance? I’m not sure. Maybe to prove that some experiences–even the most highly anticipated–can be unrewarding. To show them that if you expect too much, you will invariably be disappointed? How festive!

But wait just a minute. The picture shows none of that. It looks like three boys who are a combination of excited, slightly in awe, and perhaps a little exhausted. Maybe I have this all wrong. Maybe I pull that picture out to remind me that, although they’re young men, they were once so, so little, with all the joy and excitement children naturally bring to…well…everything. Older now, but the Christmas Miracle these days is that they’re still full of anticipation about what’s to come. They are my treasures, who–among many, many other things–have taught me that (even a lumpy, semi-disappointing, not-quite-as-you-pictured-it, somewhat adjusted) reality, when viewed through a prism of joy, can be every bit as amazing as you imagine it.

The 10 Amazing Things to Do, Eat or Shop to Get Through the Rest Of Winter

The holiday season is coming to its final weeks and this means one and only one thing: The long winter ahead of us, which for much of the country will stretch well into March, April and in some cases, even May. While it may not be another polar vortex, or other wicked winter weather year, that doesn’t mean that month of gray skies, dry air and chilly cold temperatures doesn’t take a toll. By the time early 2015 rolls around, many of us are more than ready for the warmer months again.

But though it’s not always possible to escape the winter season — even a getaway somewhere warm in the midst doesn’t chase it entirely away — there are some great ways to brighten up the dark days and cold nights of this time of the year.

Once the holidays are put to bed and you’ve started taking down the decorations, consider doing a mini-update to your space. It doesn’t have to be a huge overhaul or undertaking of giant proportions. Even just rearranging a few things can make your environment feel fresh and new. It’s a great time to leverage accent items and little details to punch things up. A cozy throw or new coffee table book can do the trick. West Elm’s Ivory Knitted Sequins throw (available in stores and online) weaves shimmery silver sequins into a thick knit that puts an instant bright spot to wherever it lands. Park a new ottoman in any room — especially in a bright color — for a pick-me-up addition. Online retailer Serena & Lily has a good mix for any taste, style or budget.

Of course it’s the little things that are everything to the environment, so even just a pretty candle in a fresh scent can make a difference in taking the winter month’s up a notch. LoveSpoon’s an editor favorite for its soy candles in amazing fragrances. Go with a sweet floral like rose for a soft vibe, or grab the cotton scent for a fresh experience.

Beauty items can also play a huge part during the winter months. You should already have a really good moisturizer for the body, particularly if you’re in cold, dry temperatures this time of year. But a great body scrub in a decadent scent or a fabulous body oil for the bath are also must-haves. Believe it or not, Whole Foods can be an amazing source for these types of items and often the products are natural, organic, cruelty-free, etc.

Food never fails to warm the heart and home, especially when it comes to home cooking. But you can cheat a little with pre-made items without skimping on that homemade experience. Trader Joe’s is an ace for this type of stuff — the mini frozen tacos in any combination are delicious. For more of an upgrade to a truly fresh made meal, keeping things healthy and whole is easier than ever. A big trend at the moment is to do interesting and unexpected things with items like rice and quinoa — adding brown sugar, fresh fruits and other unique items and recipe treats. There are so many great startup, boutique and incredible new food companies on the market — Mighty Rice, Justin’s nut butters, Fork In The Road meats, etc. It’s easier than ever to experiment.

This Man Orchestrated His Own ‘Amazing Race’ To Propose To His Girlfriend

We’ve seen quite a few elaborate marriage proposals over the years. But when it comes to dedication and attention to detail, this “Amazing Race”-inspired proposal gives the others a run for their money.

The mastermind behind the intricate scheme is a Phoenix radio show producer named Justin Scheman. He successfully tricked his girlfriend Diana Bishop into thinking she was a contestant on an online edition of the “Amazing Race” — a show the couple has binge-watched 18 seasons of since they’ve been together.

The two teamed up for the adventure, which ultimately spanned 5,000 miles, six states and two countries. The prize for completing the race? A trip to Iceland, which is where Scheman very nervously got down on one knee and popped the question to his girlfriend under the northern lights.

2014-12-19-121814rightaftershesaidyes.jpeg
Courtesy of Justin Scheman

Scheman told The Huffington Post that it wasn’t until they were already on their way to Iceland that he revealed the whole thing was a ruse.

“When she realized CBS didn’t set up that race she was floored!” he said. “She kept kissing me and squeezing me. It was so cute, I wish the camera was rolling! She couldn’t believe I was so detailed. With the pull-tab envelope, the way the clues were written, the arrows posted on the streets, real release forms, etc. I even used the same cars they use on the show.”

Scheman said it only took him six weeks and $ 2,500 to plan the proposal. But it was complicated, he told us, by the fact that he is living Phoenix, while Bishop has been living across the country in Philadelphia. He hired people from Craigslist to assist with the clues and challenges and didn’t meet the cameraman until the day of the proposal.

Fortunately, it all came together in the end in a beautiful way. Watch the romance and adventure unfold in the video above.

Roommate Dancing While He Thinks No One’s Watching Is AMAZING

They say you should dance like no one’s watching. But if you actually don’t want anyone watching, you should make sure that no one is.

That lesson was learned the hard way by this poor soul in the video above, who was cleaning up after a Halloween party whilst dancing to the Sheena Easton classic “9 to 5,” according to the video description.

The dancing is great and this guy has nothing to be ashamed of. See for yourself above.

Zaki’s Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Read my 2012 review of The Amazing Spider-Man here

In 2012, after a creative roadblock halted development on a planned Spider-Man 4 that would have re-teamed director Sam Raimi with star Tobey Maguire, and with the loss of the whole franchise to Disney a very real possibility, Spider-Man rightsholders Sony Pictures chose to reboot the Marvel Comics’ webslinger’s big screen series from the ground up just ten years after it started, and a mere five years after its last unfortunate installment. As a result, a lot of folks came down hard on The Amazing Spider-Man, with much of that resentment stemming from what they perceived as a wholly unnecessary razing-and-restart.

And as far as the necessity of the reboot, I’ll offer no argument. There was really no reason to see awkward loner Peter Parker get bitten by a genetically engineer spider again, to see his poor old Uncle Ben get fatally shot again, and to see him learn to master his spidery powers again — with the filmmakers twisting themselves into pretzels all the while to be different without being too different. That said, taken on its own merits, I enjoyed the film quite a bit. And I can now say the same thing about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is the fifth Spider-Man film overall, the third Spider-Man sequel, and the first sequel to the reboot. Still with me?

Directed once again by Marc Webb (who feels a lot more confident at the helm of a mammoth superhero spectacle), we pick things up very shortly after we left the story last time, with Peter (Andrew Garfield) freshly graduated from high school, still struggling to find that balance between power and responsibility as his spandex-suited alter ego, while also doing the on-again/off-again dance with long-suffering gal pal Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), even after vowing to her dying dad in the first flick that he’d protect her by keeping her out of his world.

In his second spin through the title role, Andrew Garfield has really found his groove as Spidey, showing both his scientific know-how and propensity for witty banter in ways that were lacking in the Raimi-Maguire iteration of the franchise. Of course, this being a Spider-Man story, we know that things have to get more complicated. Thus, we’re introduced to new baddie Electro (Jamie Foxx), not to mention the return of Peter’s millionaire chum Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan, taking over for James Franco from the previous series) to reclaim his family’s company.

Ultimately, if these movies live and die by their villains, then we’re kind of at the shallow end of the baddie pool with Electro (created in the ’60s by comic creators Stan Lee & Steve Ditko). We all know what a compelling actor Jamie Foxx is, but the underwritten role (courtesy of the script by Star Trek‘s Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman) sets him up as warmed over version of Jim Carrey’s Edward Nygma in 1995’s Batman Forever. He goes from fawning Spider-Man fanboy to furious Spider-Man foe while pretty much hopscotching right over the beats to get us from point A to point B. Batman Forever did it better (which is just a weird, weird sentence to type).

The Osborn family plotline, which encompasses Harry’s dying dad Norman (Chris Cooper) as well as further revelations about the mysterious disappearance of Peter’s parents (Campbell Scott and Embeth Davitz) when he was a child, is also marred by a lack of focus. In the interests of preserving some of the film’s third act surprises, I won’t get into spoilers, but I’ll say that it seems like the producers (among them franchise vet Avi Arad) are determined not to do the same old thing with Harry-Peter dynamic given how much it was laced through (or weight down, if you like) the prior trilogy. I give them credit for the intent, if not the execution.

While this is starting to sound like something short of a ringing endorsement, endorse it I do, based almost entirely on the strength of the Peter-Gwen relationship, itself elevated by the easy chemistry between Garfield and Stone. It’s so, so good, and such a far cry from the creepy-weepy relationship between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst (which I never liked) in the other movies. That relationship felt forced and artificial, this one doesn’t. Not only do we believe in their affection for one another, we also buy Gwen’s integral role in both halves of Peter’s life, which in turn makes the climax (reprising a beat that should be familiar to longtime Spider-Man comic book fans) feel more consequential.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 really shouldn’t as work as well as it does. Because of Sony’s ambitious (read: risky) plans to spin-off (read: strip mine) the Spider-Man rights for all they’re worth, it’s tasked with not only furthering its own internal storyline, but also laying pipe for several other potential franchises. As a result, it has a few too many balls in the air, and a few too many plot threads randomly started or abruptly ended. It feels at times like two separate movies awkwardly scotch-taped together, which has me a bit worried about Sony’s big mega-franchise plans. But as far as this entry goes, despite its flaws, I left the theater feeling satisfied. Not amazed, but satisfied. B

Man Captures Amazing Aerial Footage Of Dolphin Megapod Migration (VIDEO)

This incredible footage from a drone flying over Dana Point in Orange County, Calif. was captured by Captain Dave Anderson of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari. In this five-minute segment, we get soaring views over a megapod of dolphins and three gray whales migrating down the coast off San Clemente. Edited in is also some breathtaking footage of a Humpback whale calf nuzzling its mother, and an escort whale in Maui.

In the video description, Captain Dave says, “This is the most beautiful and compelling five-minute video I have ever put together. I learned so much about these whales and dolphins from this drone footage that it feels like I have entered a new dimension! I have not been this excited about a new technology since we built our underwater viewing pods on our whale watching boat.”

Amazingly, Captain Dave filmed the entire thing from a small inflatable boat, where he launched and caught the quadcopter by hand. It was a dangerous process, but no laws were broken. Still, wildlife videographers should not attempt to repeat the feat unless they are experienced and abiding by all laws.

Captain Dave works to educate the public about the massive whale and dolphin population off the California coast. He even started Orange County’s first whale disentanglement group in 2008, as entanglement in fishing gear is a major cause of dolphin and whale deaths around the world.

The Amazing Way This Hospital Is Fighting Physician Burnout

Hospitals have procedures and alerts in place to deal with practically anything that could possibly go wrong: “Code Red” for fire, “code blue” for medical emergencies, and “code white” for behavioral disturbances, to name a few. But the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio has introduced a new alert, “Code Lavender,” for a more unlikely and much more common threat: stress and burnout.

Code Lavender — which has also been employed at North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea — is a “holistic care rapid response” serving patients and physicians in need of intensive emotional or spiritual support, according to Amy Greene, director of spiritual care at Cleveland Clinic.

“It was an idea to indicate that we were going to respond as quickly as possible to a need for intensive emotional and spiritual support,” Greene tells The Huffington Post. “We thought originally that it would be for patients and their family members, but as it turned out, we started doing them mostly for staff.”

The Clinic is consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the world, and as such, it houses some of the sickest patients, including both children and adults, in the country and beyond.

The Code Lavender program, which has been in place since 2008, aims to support nurses and physicians during emotionally troubling or exhausting times, often after experiencing the death of one or several patients.

“[Cleveland Clinic] caregivers are used to seeing really difficult cases, but even they are going to buckle when they get hit two or three times in one day,” Greene says. “Code Lavender is a holistic team approach to going up and saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got your back.'”

Within 30 minutes of a call, the Clinic’s team of holistic nurses arrives at the unit in need to provide Reiki and massage, healthy snacks and water, and lavender arm bands to remind the nurse or physician to take it easy for the rest of the day.

“I love the whole concept of Code Lavender. It makes us feel appreciated and valued,” one nurse wrote in a Cleveland Clinic survey, while another noted, “It is helpful because it’s nice to get your stress out. It’s also good to know that our workplace feels our pain and is willing to be there for us.”

The Healing Services Team employs holistic methods that include spiritual support, counseling and therapeutic massage. Bringing together conventional medicine and alternative remedies, the Clinic also offers employees yoga classes, weight loss programs and mindfulness training.

The Cleveland Clinic is a one of a growing number of health care facilities integrating holistic healing into their services. A 2011 American Hospital Association report found that 42 percent of surveyed hospitals offer one or more Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies — including acupuncture, homeotherapy and herbal medicine — increasing from 37 percent in 2007, and 26 percent in 2005.

The Code Lavender program is just one of a growing number being created to address burnout among physicians and health care providers. One 2012 national study found that nearly half of all physicians experience burnout, more than any other type of U.S. workers. Emergency care, critical care, and family medicine workers experience the highest rates of burnout among health care providers.

Recent research has found that mindfulness training may be effective in not only reducing burnout, but also in boosting compassion among physicians. University of Virginia research from 2012 also found that mindfulness-based stress reduction courses to significantly improve burnout and well-being scores for various types of healthcare providers. And according to a small, recent study published in the Annals of Family Medicine, mindfulness training programs help physicians to feel better connected to their patients.

“[Compassion-based care] does go against an old style of medicine where it was just, ‘Go go go, stay tough, don’t be impacted by it, keep moving,'” says Greene. “We’re seeing that this is long-term not sustainable. Doctors and nurses are human beings.”

These 10 Wedding World Records Are Nothing Short Of Amazing

By Kristen Droesch for YourTango.com

Weddings are becoming more and more extravagant, and we’re all aware of it. Haven’t you ever found yourself at a wedding reception and thought, “Gosh, this must be a record-setter”? Well, a record was quite literally recently at a Sri Lankan wedding, when the bride rolled in with 126 bridesmaids. Yes 126! This got us thinking — what other world records* are out there relating to weddings?

Wet and wild.
The largest underwater wedding was achieved with 303 divers in Poland attending the nuptials of Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski in 2011. Even the priest, Father Pawel Wrobel, was a licensed diver!

All that glitters.
The record for most pearls on a wedding gown was set by Yumi Katsura of Japan, who put a whopping 13,262 cultured Akoya pearls on her gown in 2012.

That’s a lot of conjugal visits.
In 2000, 120 prisoners at Carandiru prison, Sao Paulo, Brazil, got married to their respective fiancées, setting the record for largest prison wedding.

Rolling thunder.
Also in 2000, Peter Schmidl and Anna Turceková of Bratislava, Slovakia included a wedding procession of 597 motorcyclists on their bikes. What, they couldn’t make it an even 600?

That’s some meal.
Jayalalitha Jayaram took the cake for largest wedding feast when she spent $ 23,299,162 on her foster son’s reception in 1995, hosting 150,000 guests. The menu alone was estimated at $ 621,311!

A table-breaker.
Weighing in at 15,032 lbs, the largest wedding cake in the world was made by the chefs of Mohegan Sun in Connecticut for their New England bridal showcase.

Watch your step!
The longest wedding veil measured 11,017 ft 0.5 in and was worn by Lebanese bride Sandra Mechleb. How do you store something like that?

Bark if you believe in love.
The largest dog wedding took place in the United States in 2007 and involved 178 dog “couples.” Though not official, we’re sure the dogs enjoyed themselves.

The Vomit Comet.
All it took for Erin Finnegan and Noah Fulmor (USA) to perform the first zero-gravity wedding in 2009 was a “modified Boeing 727-200” (and, we assume, a daredevil preacher).

Zoom!
In 2011, Eleanor Franks of the UK set the record for fastest marathon ran in a wedding dress (veil included) by clocking in at 4 hr 11 min 01 sec.
