Concert Review: Childish Gambino Takes L.A. to Church for ‘This Is America’ Tour Finale

Sunday night’s “This Is America” tour stop could have been seen as a funeral for Childish Gambino — the musical alter-ego Donald Glover has said he’s retiring after this tour and forthcoming album — but that doesn’t mean it was a somber occasion. On the contrary, Gambino put on a show at Los Angeles’ the […]

Street Signs: Slam Jam Brings Innovative Distribution Model to North America

After almost three decades in business, Luca Benini, the founder of Slam Jam, which is based in Ferrara, Italy, decided it was time to enter the North American market.
“The key objective for Slam Jam is to go international with our distribution by 2020,” said Benini. “Approaching America is a crucial pillar of the strategy, with the very valuable support of market specialist Point.”
Benini partnered with Point, which includes Jason Sherman, Jason Benta and Jordan Thomas, who have held stints within sales at brands including Diadora Heritage, Under Armour and Billionaire Boys Club. They built a relationship organically and got to know each other during Paris fashion week and Miami Art Basel.
Slam Jam is a retailer, distributor and operates production facilities. Long before the luxury and streetwear categories were bedfellows, Benini was connecting these worlds and rooting his brands in skate, art and music. Late last year, Slam Jam teamed with Carhartt WIP to open Spazio Maiocchi, an art space in Milan that hosts exhibitions and fashion events and Benini has helped revive and reposition heritage brands such as Kappa.
In 1989, Benini started distributing Stüssy in the European market and Carhartt WIP quickly followed. Slam Jam currently handles the Italian distribution for brands

Stevie Wonder Takes a Knee ‘for America’ in Solidarity After Trump’s Colin Kaepernick Tirade

Stevie Wonder took to his knee in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and other athletes who previously knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality against African-Americans.

Before performing hits such as “Higher Ground” and “Overjoyed” at Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Saturday, the 67-year-old singer started his headlining set by addressing the controversy reignited by President Donald Trump’s most recent remarks about NFL player who kneel during the national anthem.

“Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America,” Wonder said as he knelt with his son Kwame Morris. “Not just one knee, but I’m taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, leaders of our world and our globe. Amen.”

He added, “I wanted to say that prayer before I serve you my musical meal.”

RELATED VIDEO: Diddy Tells NFL Players to ‘Stand Up for Each Other’ After Trump’s Colin Kaepernick Tirade

During a rally speech in Alabama on Friday, Trump stated, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say, ‘Get that son of a b–ch off the field right now. Out, you’re fired.’”

He followed this up by pouring more gasoline on the fire with a series of tweets. “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect…our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem,” he wrote. “If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”

Numerous celebrities — including Diddy — have also joined in standing behind the players, causing a resurgence of the #TakeAKnee hashtag on social media.

RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

In August 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines for refusing to stand for the national anthem.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said at the time. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Oldest Male Orangutan in North America – Who Loved Bob Barker and The Price Is Right – Dies at 45

Toledo is mourning the loss of one of its longest and most beloved residents: J.J. the orangutan.

The 45-year-old ape, who lived at the Toledo Zoo in Ohio, died over the weekend from heart failure. According to the zoo, J.J. – whose full name was Jiggs Junior – was the oldest male orangutan in North America.

The zoo announced the news on Facebook, Tuesday, calling J.J. a “beloved member,” noting that “millions of visitors enjoyed his gentle disposition, remarkable intelligence and endearing interactions.”

J.J.’s long-time zookeeper, Suzanne Husband, shared that the orangutan loved visiting with toddlers and was a little bit of a TV addict.

“One of his favorite enrichment items was watching TV,” she said. “He loved football and would make a nest in front of the TV on weekends and look like every other guy, kicked back watching the games.”

RELATED VIDEO: Orangutan Can’t Stop Laughing After Seeing This Magic Trick

Other than sports coverage, J.J.’s favorite series was game show The Price Is Right.

“He would come in from exhibit every day at and wait for us to turn on the TV,” said Husband. “He would even be a little annoyed if we were late!”

She noted that after Drew Carey took over hosting duties a few years ago, J.J.’s interest in the series waned – revealing that his affection was really for former star Bob Barker.

“Later in his life, we were able to stream his TV through the Internet and pull up old shows and his interest in the game show came back,” said Husband.

The zoo called J.J. an “incredible ambassador for his species,” noting, “He will be dearly missed.”

101 Portraits Tell The Stories Of People Who Survived Gun Violence In America

One day while picking up her daughters from daycare, Shirley Justice was attacked by her ex-husband. She was shot 14 times, and she survived.

Since 2013, photographer Kathy Shorr has chronicled people like Justice, survivors of gun violence in America. In her portrait, Justice stands near a window wearing a bra, revealing the scars writ across her chest and stomach. The expression on her face reads as mournful, even incredulous, yet at peace.

“Fourteen bullets entered my body that day,” Justice recalled in her interview with Shorr. “Fourteen bullets that ripped through every major organ and artery. Fourteen chances to die. ‘I will live for you,’ I promised my girls as I lay on the ground watching my ex-husband flee the scene.”

Shorr’s photo book, simply titled Shot, features 101 portraits accompanied by interviews and descriptions of her subjects, all of whom survived instances of gun violence in America. Shorr first began thinking about the project after she and her daughter were held up at gunpoint during a home invasion.

Neither Shorr nor her daughter were physically injured during the encounter, but the experience and the subsequent emotional trauma left the artist agonizing over the thousands of Americans each year whose lives are irreparably changed by virtue of a loaded gun.

According to CNN in 2016, there are more mass shootings in the U.S. than in any other country in the world. That same year, The New York Times reported that gun homicides are a common cause of death in America, killing about as many people as car crashes. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that between 2001 and 2014 alone, 440,095 people died at the hands of a firearm on U.S. soil.

“People don’t always think about the survivors,” Shorr told The Huffington Post. “Gun violence survivors are here and have a voice, a very important voice. They have experienced something that is kind of indescribable to someone that hasn’t experienced it.”

To begin her project, Shorr reached out to a man named Antonius, whose story she’d learned while listening to the NY1 news. She approached him on Facebook, they emailed back and forth and eventually met in person. After talking through the details, Shorr and Antonius returned to the Brooklyn street corner where he had been shot only seven weeks prior. Antonius took a Xanax to stay calm.

The shoot, according to Shorr, was overwhelmingly positive. People from the community came by to shake Antonius’ hand. He pulled up his shirt and Shorr photographed his scar. Antonius told the photographer how cathartic it was to return to the site and take back the space. “At that point I realized this was a project I could really do,” Shorr said.

“I always saw it as a book,” she continued. “I just felt that once I started there was no turning back. Especially once I started talking to people and learning their stories, I felt an incredible amount of responsibility to complete the project.”

Shorr’s subjects adhere to no single age, gender, ethnicity, class or occupation. Their stories are equally as far-ranging. There is 8-year-old Taniya, accidentally shot by a fellow third grader who brought his father’s gun to school, and Greg, a Georgia-based police sergeant shot by a drug dealer during a bust. There are victims of robberies, domestic abuse, hate crimes and stray bullets. The physical impact of the violence manifests in wheelchairs, prosthetic aids, purple contusions or scars of gauzy flesh. The emotional impact the viewer can only attempt to imagine.

Shorr describes her style as part street photography, part documentary portraiture. Some images zoom in on the physical residue of where bullet met flesh, while others are more straightforward portraits, focusing more on the person than the tragedy that shattered their sense of normalcy. Many photos were captured at the location where each subject was wounded, which the artist described as a way of saying, “You didn’t get me, I’m here.”

“The project was always meant to bring a face to an abstract situation,” Shorr said. “To show how gun violence affects everyone, not only certain groups of people. Anyone can be shot, anywhere. Many of the people in the project are gun owners themselves; one is even a member of the NRA.”

Shorr hopes her portrait series serves as a non-partisan foil to the polarizing shouting matches on the subject of gun violence. “It’s time to start talking about these issues so we can grow and learn from each other,” Shorr said. “When people can see both sides of an issue, and both sides have valid points, we can talk to each other rather than at each other. It’s not a black and white issue.”

Kathy Shorr’s Shot: 101 Survivors of Gun Violence in America is available now. On Thursday, April 13, Shorr will join Lyle Rexer for a discussion and book signing at Brooklyn’s Powerhouse Books. All captions were provided by the artist.

Sean Spicer Sends Distress Signal To America With Upside-Down Flag Pin

During Friday’s White House press conference, Sean Spicer sent Twitter into a frenzy when he wore his American flag pin upside down. Though Spicer’s unfortunate move was likely accidental, an upside-down American flag is an officially recognized sign of distress.

Almost immediately, everyone on Twitter began making the same joke about what kind of signal Spicer was trying to send.

The upside-down flag was recently used in a promotion for the next season of “House of Cards,” so of course the Netflix show tweeted about Spicer’s mishap:

Spicer’s error was flagged down during the press conference and he quickly fixed it. According to Yahoo White House correspondent Hunter Walker, Omarosa Manigault reportedly passed Spicer a note about the error.

We know Melissa McCarthy and the “Saturday Night Live” writers are just loving this new material.

Who’s Minding America?

Who’s Minding America?

Who’s Minding America? In today’s world of expanding violence, corrupt governments, greedy industries, exploding terrorism and growing gun control issues, someone had better be asking the question. Enter internationally read, much loved, From Gents’ Pens author D.A. Grady. Drawing upon his own military background, corporate insider knowledge, broadcasting expertise, and outdoorsman skills, D.A. spins a complex web of international intrigue, crooked politicians, misplaced loyalties, high tech espionage, and cutting edge weaponry that is all the more frightening because not only is it possible, it is probable. Within the covers of this, the first full-length novel in the John Hatch Tales series, the author skillfully unveils a twisted plot to set aside the Second Amendment and take over America. Following a horrific event he has witnessed live on national television, famed outdoorsman John Hatch reaches out to Citizens Against Guns leader, Gray Grayson. Both men soon realize that gun control is merely a symptom of a greater problem, as they join forces to save an America that is clearly floundering on the brink of destruction. A flick of a switch or a squeeze of a trigger can thwart all of their efforts as they travel the globe in a race against time, engaging with a variety of circumstances, forces, politics, and clandestine figures that hold both the country and the reader in their tightening grasp until the final pages of this first entry in the John Hatch saga. Can a small group of everyday citizens save America, indeed the world, as we know it? You won’t want to miss this one!

Bill Maher Wants To ‘Make America Learn Again’ This Valentine’s Day

Bill Maher wants just one thing this Valentine’s DayAnd that’s to “Make America Learn Again.”

On Friday’s broadcast of “Real Time,” Maher said “one of the saddest things” about the America that people now live in is that “we don’t seem to want smart people in our lives any more.”

“Smart presidents? Can’t have that. Scientists? What do they know? Newspaper editors? Liars, fake news!” he quipped.

More people now get their news from their Facebook feeds “by sharing, or as it used to be called, hearsay” than newspapers, Maher continued. Given that, he asked whether “this Valentine’s Day, can we please fall in love with knowledge again?”

Check out the full segment above.

Is America Still A Nation of Immigrants?

The letter below was originally written after 9/11 as an open letter to a relative of mine who had worries about migrating to America. But it feels that it is especially relevant to our time. So here it is, revised.

Dear Cousin,

What is it like to be an immigrant in America these days? Is it still worth coming, you ask, and is the American dream still possible?

Your questions gave me pause. Who from Vietnam, after all, would have thought to ask them a few years back? Didn’t the American dream, or rather the dream of coming to America, cause the movement of millions in our homeland, and stir the soul of many millions more? It breaks my heart then to hear that you might not come. It is to me the worst news yet about my adopted country.

Yet it’s undeniable. The nation of immigrants is turning its back on immigrants once more. The immigrant’s hold on American soil has become increasingly tenuous. Even citizens now face a barrage of hate speech and many are being attacked in a rising wave of hate crimes. In schools, white students scream “build the wall” at their classmates who are Mexicans or Muslims.

“Build the wall” has become a racist mantra chanted by many around the country against non-whites.

2017-02-08-1486590726-9013476-gop2016trumpjpeg950be.jpg

Cousin, have you heard the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine? When it stops singing, it means the oxygen has run out, providing a warning to all.

In America, and in the context of a free and open society, often the immigrant is that canary. In economic down times he is often the first to be blamed. And amid the ongoing US war against terrorism, he is fast becoming a scapegoat.

After the 2016 election that ushered in Donald Trump as President of the United States, many hate-crime related incidents occurred in which the President’s name was invoked by the perpetrators, as if to sanction the violence and verbal abuse.

In the name of protection and security, immigrants’ rights are being eroded as I write. Foreign students and workers tremble. I’ve seen an old South Asian man whose hands shook at the airport when he gave his green card to immigration officers, fearing sudden arrest and deportation. I know an undocumented college student at Berkeley — he was brought to the US when he was three years old — who now fakes his address on any application for fear of being deported.

2017-02-08-1486590339-421738-H05_Racist_Trump_USA.jpg

‘I have my hopes’

Yet I have my hopes. Americans rallied at airports in protest when Trump signed an executive order to keep certain groups of people out of the country, including green card holders. The protest against the new tyranny is strong and ongoing. I have hope to that the damage Trump is creating both at home and abroad can be mitigated by his growing unpopularity. After all, he is dismantling international institutions that have been in place since World War II, potentially returning the world to a state of competing nations with hard borders, high tariffs, trade wars, and gun boat diplomacy, turning against the forces of globalization.

And worse, in turning against America’s liberal values and our identity as a nation of immigrant, we are losing our strength in diversity.

Over the years I find it beneficial to look at this country through two different lenses: America versus the United States. The United States is a sovereign nation with permanent interests that is currently waging a war on terrorism. And it will trample upon innocents in its path, be it at home or abroad, if need be, in order to win it. In the process, the newcomer to this country, one without a voice and resources, often becomes collateral damage.

America, on the other hand, has everything you and I ever dreamed of: transparency, freedom, democracy, opportunity, due process, fair play and the promise of progress. America is where you work hard and earn respect.

The two versions exist in a kind of complex dance. In good times, America leads. In bad times, America is forgotten and the United States dances alone. These days, I fear that to be a patriotic immigrant is to love the ideals of America despite what the United States is doing in the name of security.

While I understand the logic of permanent interests, if America is destroyed in the process, then what is the use? And as far as I am concerned the only good patriotism is a civilized one. Blind patriotism always leads to bloody ends. To be patriotic is to dare ask questions. Must rights be abused in the name of security? Is it truly the country’s interest to demonize its minorities and its newcomers?

Dear cousin, I hope I haven’t completely frightened you, but the situation requires honesty. To reach American shores these days is a much more difficult undertaking, with fewer ready-made promises on the horizon.

I still want you to make this difficult journey, but you must be prepared for the challenges ahead. And I’ll let you in on a secret about this American dream you spoke so fondly of: it is you who must renew it. Without you, who dream the American dream, the country is in danger of becoming old. Without your energy, we would weaken. Even if we don’t know it yet, we all desperately need to be reborn through your eyes.

So, is the American Dream still alive? No, cousin, not really. Not without you at the table. Not without you prospering. Not without you.

Stephen Colbert Takes Down Trump Over Damage Done To America And Hobbits

Just like in “The Hobbit” when Bilbo Baggins returned from his adventures and found his relatives auctioning his possessions, Stephen Colbert was equally surprised at what he found in his first show since the Trump administration.

“You ever regret going on vacation?” said Colbert.

In a lengthy takedown, Colbert assessed all the damage caused by Donald Trump in his first week in office.

“You gotta give the guy credit. He can really get a lot of stuff undone. From Obamacare to climate change to torture, he’s already moved the country back to 2004. If this keeps up, pretty soon I’m gonna launch ‘The Colbert Report,’” said “The Late Show” host.

Colbert also took on the Trump’s executive order severely restricting entry into the U.S. for refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, which has led to numerous outrageous incidents, including a 5-year-old Iranian boy being detained and kept from his mother for hours.

“Or as Kellyanne Conway calls it, ‘alternative daycare,’” said Colbert.

The final straw happened when Colbert addressed comments from Steve Bannon, who was placed on the National Security Council.

Bannon described Trump voters as “the working-class hobbits,” and that didn’t sit right with Colbert.

“Hey, now you’ve gone too far. You might be the dark media genius behind the biggest electoral upset in American history, you might be playing footsie with Neo-Nazis, but now we’re talking Tolkien. That’s a subject that I happen to know a little bit about,” said Colbert.

The “Late Show” host proceeded to explain that “there is no working class” in Hobbiton.

“It’s an agrarian society,” he said before explaining that the only working-class citizen in Hobbiton was actually the bad guy, Ted Sandyman.

“When it comes to hobbits, maybe you should shut your mouth and listen for a while,” said Colbert.

Twitter Users Recall All The #TrumpFirsts That America Is Enduring

For better or worse, President-elect Donald Trump vowed to shake up the political system.

William H. Macy And Stephen Colbert Call A Family Meeting For America

Actor William H. Macy had a heart-to-heart with the nation on Friday.

The “Shameless” star joined “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert for a “family meeting” with America, in which the two dads talked about pretty much everything from porn, puberty, taking drugs, Thanksgiving fireworks, where babies come from and drinking alcohol.

Their most crucial piece of advice came toward the end of the skit, however, alongside a thinly veiled dig at President-elect Donald Trump.

Check out the full skit above and watch Colbert’s later interview with Macy below.

The ‘Arthur’ Generation Will Need To Save America

The first lady of the United States gave Marc Brown a call after the publication of his popular 1991 children’s book, Arthur Meets the President.

Barbara Bush, wife of President George H.W. Bush and creator of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, wanted to include the democracy-themed story ― which features an aardvark family going to Washington D.C. ― in the National Archives. Brown, still half-a-decade away from premiering the first episode of his animated “Arthur” television series, was happy to help. And over the next few years, the author joined Bush’s literary initiatives by attending various events and meeting families across the country.

When “Arthur” the TV show, which launched in 1996, became a success during the Bill Clinton administration, the original President book became an animated segment where Arthur Read’s family met an amiable Clinton in the White House. They all shared a pizza.

As the second Bush administration took power and Laura Bush revived Barbara’s literary initiative in the White House, Brown again joined the effort.

Part of this experience involved taking shots of vodka in Russia with Vladimir Putin.

“Laura Bush invited me to go to Russia with her and represent the country at the first children’s book festival that then Mrs. Putin was trying to replicate what Laura was doing in Washington,” Brown told The Huffington Post in a rare interview about the creation of his beloved aardvark character.

“And so that was very interesting to go over there and actually have dinner with President Putin … He made a big entrance. As I remember it, we were in the Kremlin and the entire room was covered in gold leaf. There were first ladies from all over the world and each one would give a toast. We all had to drink vodka shots after each toast and so things were getting a little fuzzy.”

A representative for Laura Bush relayed the details to her for HuffPost and the former first lady apparently recalled the incident with fondness and laughter.

The second Bush administration eventually ended, and the Obamas entered the White House. The animated “Arthur” series remained on PBS and continued to be as popular as ever. The show introduced a lovable Obama character, of course.

“Arthur” has always been a bipartisan story for kids all over and across America ― teaching morals of love, friendship and acceptance any parent could get behind. And so the rise of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States has created a conundrum for the show, which celebrates 20 years on the air this year.

“I am terrified that this maniac could actually become a leader of this country,” Brown told HuffPost before Election Day.

Over the course of 2016, Brown spent his free time drawing cartoons depicting Trump as the emperor with no clothes. In one cartoon Brown sent to HuffPost, a naked Donald wears a crown while sitting atop a gold throne.

He’s on a cellphone talking to Putin and says, “Vladdy, it’s me, Donny. Got a little cash flow problem over here …” Another depicts a traditional Christian church where the steeple’s cross has been changed to a golden “T.”

“With all the work that I have done and invested with children being successful …” said Brown, “I worry about what would happen with children.”

It remains unclear whether this will be the first presidential administration during the history of “Arthur” that has no involvement with the program. HuffPost tried following up with Brown after the election, but did not get a response.

Unlike the popular children’s show “Sesame Street,” which teaches basic fundamentals such as the ABCs and counting, “Arthur” is geared toward a demographic that is just starting to form opinions about the world and is searching for a way to live. Similarly, “Arthur” sets itself apart from the Disney and Nickelodeon shows that tend to favor pure (typically slapstick) comedy over substantial ideas about morality and how to be.

The first lines of the now iconic theme song told young viewers, “Everyday when you’re walking down the street / Everybody that you meet / Has an original point of view.” A song from the show that became almost equally as recognizable touted the joys of having a library card. “Arthur” constantly pushed its audience to go explore and then report the cool things they found out to strangers who could soon become friends.

Brown’s creation was, and still is, overtly pro-education and pro-inclusivity.

Arthur and his friends are animals of all shapes and colors because Brown cared deeply about the ills of stereotyping people. “I wanted all kids to be able to relate to any of the characters,” said Brown.

Just recently, while guest-teaching a class of college students at the University of Wisconsin, a student asked Brown if the character Francine is gay. “You know, I thought about it, I said, ‘Well, she could be, of course she could be,’” explained Brown. “And so they kind of liked the idea that Francine could be gay.”

Despite these super-sized doses of positivity and teaching moments, “Arthur” has still found a way to resonate with restless kids. Amid the lessons, the series has referenced shows such as “South Park” and “Beavis and Butt-Head,” as well as a notable episode-long cameo from the Backstreet Boys at the height of their fame. “It was fun,” A.J. McLean of the boy band told HuffPost. “It was weird to see yourself as an aardvark.”

The show knew exactly what it had to do to both win at the ratings game and achieve its goal of truly affecting children. “Collectively, what we wanted to do with the show was to use animation and television ― two very seductive mediums ― to engage kids and make them want to read,” said Brown.

“That was this underlying agenda, but also, we were hoping that we could get parents and caregivers wanting to watch the show with kids so there might be conversations that we could start between them … you [as a parent] can share your values, it’s such an opportunity.”

This cross-generational appeal of the show has led some viewers to return to “Arthur” as grown-ups.

Earlier this year, countless memes based on stills from the animated show notably propagated online. Fans would take a screenshot from “Arthur” and write their own dialogue and jokes for the characters.

A parody of this “Arthur” meme phenomenon even found its way on the new and critically-acclaimed FX show “Atlanta.”

Brown is well aware of these memes, which had fans sharing a certain image of Arthur’s fist and jokingly questioning why the animal characters would wear headphones on the sides of their heads rather than their actual ears.

Arthur’s glasses also notably just float on his head without any support.

“I’m really having such a good time watching Arthur and all his friends pop up on BuzzFeed all the time,” said Brown. “It’s very interesting that I’ve been able to sustain these characters through an entire generation, a little longer actually … 40 years?”

Despite its longevity, Brown actually struggled for years before his true breakthrough came with the publication of the first book in the Arthur series, Arthur’s Nose, in 1976. He briefly held a job at a television news station in Erie, Pennsylvania, where his creative ideas weren’t exactly respected. Trying to pitch something nobody had ever done before, Brown came up with an idea to turn the weather person into a weather fairy. In his vision, the weather fairy would descend into the scene via a swing and Brown himself would hide in a wishing well to help talk about the weather.

“So, there was no reaction from my boss,” Brown recalled. “I was explaining how perhaps it could have a little mechanical squirrel [give the weather fairy] a magic marker to do the weather maps … I finished and left his office and then the next day there was a little pink slip of paper in my mailbox informing me that I was no longer needed,” Brown laughed.

“I think I learned early on that perhaps I needed a career where I was more self-directed.”

The genesis of Arthur came right after Brown lost a teaching job and his son, Tolon, asked for a bedtime story. “I don’t know why, I sometimes think maybe I was thinking alphabetically, and aardvark popped into my head,” said Brown.

This idea that just popped into his head went on to dominate Brown’s life for over four decades and continues to do so today. The prevalence of “Arthur” in his life has come at great reward, but also existential cost.

“I have been frustrated by having such good fortune, to have this wonderful adventure with ‘Arthur,’” explained Brown. “I never ever expected the television show to last as long as it has and PBS shows no sign of it ending anytime soon. But as an artist, personally, I have had to put a lot of things I wanted to do on the back burner ― styles I’ve wanted to experiment with and other kinds of books I’ve wanted to write.”

Brown is clearly proud that he’s gotten to call the shots for so many years and had such success doing so, but it’s also been a sacrifice. Creating a property geared toward educating children doesn’t necessarily earn critical attention from peers and adults, except as a parenting tool.

But our world, now perhaps more than ever, needs more people like Brown. Luckily, he helped raise a generation that continues to share his beliefs of acceptance, curiosity and the will to do what’s right.

We can all dream of becoming president, but if you can even influence the person that eventually does take over that job ― and for the better ― well that’s a pretty amazing place to start.

As Brown put it …

“Kids are my boss and, you know, I really like my job.”

Listen below to Chance the Rapper’s cover of the “Arthur” theme song. “Ohhhh, I love his version,” Brown said of the musician’s song. “I was just blown away, it was so powerful and beautiful and dreamy.”

Top Scientists Confirm: America Already 4.8% Greater Again

Read The Political Garbage Chute for daily, totally fake news.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Less than 48 hours after alleged billionaire Donald J. Trump was elected as the 45th President of the United States of America, some of the nation’s top scientists have made a rather momentous announcement. Speaking at a press conference outside the National Science Institute’s headquarters, Dr. Glenda Halsey told reporters the NSI’s initial tests confirm an “uptick” in the country’s Greatness Quotient — a measurement the science community has relied upon for centuries to empirically measure just how great a country is or isn’t.

“As soon as Mr. Trump was declared the winner,” Dr. Halsey told reporters, “the nation’s GQ — that’s Greatness Quotient — went up by 4.8%.”
2016-11-10-1478792125-9589554-Donald_J._Trump_at_Marriott_Marquis_NYC_September_7th_2016_03.jpg
Halsey says that the NSI uses an evaluative battery of tests to determine the GQ of any nation. The tests look to see how many guns are owned per citizen, how much freedom “libtards and other Commies” have, in addition to a multitude of other variables. The results are measured against the optimal levels and then the GQ is calculated. Dr. Halsey, when reporters asked what factors caused or contributed to the uptick in America’s GQ, hedged a bit.

“We’re not really one hundred percent sure,” Dr. Halsey said, “we just know that magically, overnight, America was greater again. Nothing specific happened, but we do have some interesting hypotheses.”

One theory, Halsey said, is that the country’s colors stopped running. Another is that a large number of Americans who didn’t love it, left it. Still another theory is that Americans en masse began contributing their daily $ 1.05 to the Freedom Fund started after 9/11 by the George W. Bush administration. Her colleagues told Dr. Halsey they have another theory that involves “millions of true, red-blooded, ammo hoarding patriots” replacing the words “France” or “French” with “freedom” in their common vernacular.

“I’m not really sure which, if any of these theories is the correct one,” Halsey said, “but we are very soon going to have a reality-TV star and guy who’s taken several of his businesses into bankruptcy as our president, so I’m not even entirely sure the normal universal scientific laws even apply anymore.”

A Tribe Called Quest Releases A Perfect Meditation On The Sad State Of America

While it seemed that virtually everyone, regardless of their political beliefs, was utterly shocked when Republican candidate Donald Trump won last week’s presidential election, iconic hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest saw it coming.

“I knew it was gonna happen,” Jarobi White told Vanity Fair last week. The outcome was predicted on A Tribe Called Quest’s latest album, “We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service,” their first release in 18 years.

The album, available for streaming below, features Jarobi White, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and the voice of late member Phife Dawg, along with guest appearances by artists including Elton John and André 3000.

Although there is a song titled “The Donald” on the record, the track “We the People …” features lyrics that will surely resonate the most with those who opposed Trump. The song’s chorus sums up present-day America in simple and scathing verses:

All you black folks, you must go
All you Mexicans, you must go
And all you poor folks, you must go
Muslims and gays, boy, we hate your ways
So all you bad folks, you must go

The band performed “We the People …” and “The Space Program” last weekend during their first performance on “Saturday Night Live.” Check it out, and stream the whole thing on Spotify, below.

Jeanne Gang Designs ‘Working in America’

It’s been 40 years since Studs Terkel published “Working,” a book packed with 150 people explaining what they do all day – and why.

Jane Saks – whose father was Terkel’s friend – hasn’t forgotten it. In fact, she’s celebrating it by updating it for the 21st century. To do that, she assembled a star-studded team consisting of Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, Pulitzer Prize winner photographer Lynsey Addario, and National Public Radio.

“My work is about using art and culture to collaborate and create new models of cultural participation that have social impact,” Saks says.

She’s created a three-part, multimedia experience designed to travel the nation’s public libraries. “Working in America” tells 24 stories of as many individuals – a veteran-turned-urban-farmer, a high school principal and a professional escort, among others.

2016-11-11-1478874939-8401470-WIA2016_22937.JPG

“It’s museum quality but accessible to the people,” she says. “It’s not to be nailed to the floor or walls – it’s for multiple spaces.”

And it’s about issues of economics and equity – the widening wealth gap, access to quality education and the impact of globalization on people trying to make a decent living. “It’s about the social inequalities of our time,” she says.

Among the three parts is the exhibit designed by Studio Gang, currently on display at the Chicago Public Library’s Harold Washington Library Center and designed to travel to libraries nationwide.

“They’re very large photographs of individuals in their workspace – it really draws you in, because the photography is stunning,” Gang says. “There’s a library shelf for books related to work or labor – and that brings reading and history into the exhibit.”

The displays are designed also for a desk element to be inserted, so viewers can actually sit down and get engaged with the story of the people and their photographs. Each birch-wood display folds up for flexible transit – with soft leather handles that won’t bruise a librarian’s hand when it’s unfolded and assembled.

It’s that kind of thoughtful work, driven by clients, users and viewers alike, that sets Studio Gang’s architecture apart from all others, even in a library exhibition on the nature of labor.

“I’m interested also in how work has changed today – with people working anywhere and all the time,” Gang says. “It’s so strong to put that in a library, where people are going to search for work today – we thought that would be very impactful.”

In addition to the exhibition, there’s also a radio series, co-produced by Saks and Joe Richman and featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered” this fall. At working.org., members of the public can upload their own stories and photographs to an online archive called “Your Working Story.”

“It’s about participation – what you take away and what you give,” Saks says. “The more participation, the more alive it becomes.”

Surely, Studs Terkel would approve.

Designed especially for kids. This luggage featuring Marvel superheroes was created by Heys with the unique characteristics of children in mind. Incorporating several design features that benefit children, these cases are the perfect travel companion. These beautiful cases have Marvel characters specially printed onto their hardshell surfaces. There are a variety of unique character prints in this collection; these prints include popular Marvel characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Flash, Thor, Spiderman and many more. In creating a ‘High-end’ series for Marvel, our designers incorporated several children-specific features. One of these is the internal ‘reversed-curved’ handle system that curves the handle inwards & upwards closer to the child, making it much more comfortable for the child – at a low height – to hold and navigate the case. The Patent Protected design of this case also allows the wheels to ‘protrude’ out. This protrusion keeps the case elevated, so that even when being rolled at a very low height off the floor, the wheels will be the only point of contact and the case will continue to roll with ease. The cases weigh in at a mere 3.7 lbs, and feature our inline skate wheels that make their rolling even smoother, so any child can easily wheel these fun cases around. They also have a zipper closure system, that when opened reveals a beautifully lined interior as well as a zippered divider for internal organization. Patent Protected

Walpole, Massachusetts, located about 20 miles southwest of Boston, has undergone an interestingtransformation from a rural community dotted with farms, to an industrial landscape dominated by factories and plants, to a modern bedroom suburb of Boston. This volume of over two hundred photographs, many published for the first time, presents a well-rounded view of Walpole from the late eighteenth century into the mid-twentieth century. Readers will see a Walpole that has mostly disappeared and will have the opportunity to stroll down Main Street before it and other roads were paved, to observe and peek into forgotten, antiquated homes and government buildings, and to walk in the shadows of the great mills. Two of the nationally known industries that this book touches upon are Kendall’s Curity, which produced diapers, band aids, and other medical supplies; and Bird and Son, which manufactured roofing shingles, siding products, floor coverings, and cardboard boxes.
