Repetto Appoints Gilles Assor as CEO for the Americas

Repetto has appointed Gilles Assor as chief executive officer for the Americas.
The Frenchman has previously worked for Maison Margiela, Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier. Most recently he worked as the vice president for the Americas at Robert Clergerie.
Assor told WWD that while Repetto boasts strong followings across Asia and Europe, the U.S. and the Americas at large remain underpenetrated markets.
“What is important to know about Repetto is that it’s run with values and a strong identity. We already are very successful and known worldwide. The U.S. is one of the last continents where we have to work on that. We already have one store on West Broadway in SoHo. I’ve just arrived but I have a lot of plans including new retail expansion and repositioning the brand in terms of wholesale,” said the executive.
Assor intends to strike an even balance in the annunciation of Repetto’s three brand pillars: ath-leisure, professional dance products and fashion shoes.
With this positioning, he looks to multiply the brand’s U.S. business by six times in the next two years.
A Los Angeles store is first on the agenda for the label, followed by the addition of four to five more brick-and-mortar units. The brand intends to

Teen On ‘America’s Got Talent’ Brings The Tears As She Performs For Her Father With Cancer

You’ll need all the tissues you can find watching Evie Clair’s performance from Tuesday night’s “America’s Got Talent.”

While onstage, the 13-year-old singer tearfully revealed that part of the reason she’s performing is for her dad, who was diagnosed with colon cancer about a year ago.

The audience was in tears even before Clair sang one note of Christina Perri’s “Arms,” a song she sings to her father when he’s going through rough days. When she started singing, and shots of her family watching offstage appeared on screen, it was just too much.

Just try not to cry all over your keyboard. Then you’ll be sobbing for other reasons.

12-Year-Old Ventriloquist Blows Away ‘America’s Got Talent’

Before performing on Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent,” a nervous and giggly Darci Lynne Farmer told the judges that she “would really like to keep ventriloquism alive because it’s not common, you know?”

The 12-year-old from Oklahoma City then did her part in a big way. As Farmer provided the skillfully hidden vocals, her puppet rabbit Petunia belted out a dazzling “Summertime.” The duo earned wows from the panelists and host Tyra Banks (making her “AGT” debut) before Mel B. pushed the Golden Buzzer to vault Farmer into the live show round.

A well-deserved happy ending.

Corneliani to Focus on Americas, Strengthens Management Team

MILAN — Corneliani is focusing on the Americas, building its executive management team to further develop business in the region.
The Italian men’s wear company has tapped Maurizio Mantovani as its Americas chief executive officer, and he is charged with boosting the brand’s wholesale network and its retail business. He reports to Corneliani ceo Paolo Roviera. Most recently, Mantovani was senior vice president of operations and outlets at Ermenegildo Zegna in New York, leveraging 20 years of experience at the men’s wear group holding different roles in the North American division. Roviera, who joined Corneliani from Pal Zileri in September, is also a Zegna alum.
Corneliani has also appointed Sean Hieter senior vice president of sales. Hieter was previously vice president of Robert Graham Designs. His strong  relations with retailers will be key in growing the brand’s business through department stores and high-end specialty stores, the company said.
“North America accounts for less than 10 percent of sales and it is only a wholesale business,” Roviera said. “This can’t be. We aim for the region to represent more than 20 percent of total.”
Roviera said a web of relations already stands with “key players,” from Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to Nordstrom, but that

John Oliver Goes Off On America’s Most Absurd Marijuana Laws

John Oliver returned on Sunday after a brief hiatus with a detailed story about America’s most counter-productive and antiquated marijuana laws.

In addition to detailing how the U.S. tax code screws marijuana businesses that operate legally within their states, Oliver showed how federal regulations put individuals who were complying with state laws at risk.

“If you have marijuana right now, even if you are acting completely legally according to your state, you may still be in serious jeopardy,” Oliver said. The “Last Week Tonight” host then went through numerous examples of how federal law interfered with people who had medical marijuana prescriptions to treat everything from epileptic seizures to PTSD.

“I know that some people will say, well hold on, the medical efficacy of marijuana needs a lot more study, and that is true,” Oliver said. “The problem is, it’s very difficult to do that because federal laws are standing in the way.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump’s administration have hinted that the federal government may crack down on states that have legalized recreational marijuana use.

“I don’t think America is going to be a better place when people of all ages, and particularly young people, are smoking pot,” Sessions told reporters in February. “I believe it’s an unhealthy practice, and current levels of THC in marijuana are very high compared to what they were a few years ago, and we’re seeing real violence around that.”

Watch Oliver’s take-down, including his response to Sessions, in the video above.

360-Degree Photographs Invite You Inside America’s Most Majestic Libraries

Whether or not you consider yourself an avid reader, there is something undeniably magical about entering a library. Perhaps it’s the cloak of silence blanketing the space, which amplifies the sound of every flipping page and muffled whisper. Maybe it’s the majestic architecture that transforms the public spaces into literary temples, or the subconscious feeling that an infinite wealth of knowledge is at your fingertips.

If perchance you are not in the immediate vicinity of a hall of books, worry not; Thomas R. Schiff will bring the library to you. The photographer’s series “The Library Exhibition” features a selection of 360-degree, panoramic photographs that mimic the feeling of entering an expansive library space. And the best part is, there’s no library card necessary.

Schiff, who has previously photographed modernist homes and cathedral ceilings with the same panoramic style, captured the image of 38 libraries around the country, from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello library to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale. Because Schiff captures the spaces before the libraries open to the public, few people are seen roaming the book-laden halls, allowing the eye to focus on the myriad architectural details and structural differences.

The photographs come together to show the history of the library in America, a space traditionally designated for community and learning. There have been, however, significant changes to the library model over time. For example, prior to the late 18th century, libraries were spaces reserved for the elites; not until Benjamin Franklin opened the first American lending library in 1790 were the spaces open to the public.

Are such ideological shifts evident in the buildings’ stained-glass windows, winding staircases, and looming chandeliers? Take a brief tour through Schiff’s favorite libraries and come to your own conclusion.

Thomas R. Schiff’s “The Library Exhibition” is on view from March 15 until April 20 at Aperture Gallery, New York.

Fubarnomics: A Lighthearted, Serious Look at America’s Economic Ills

FUBAR, an acronym stemming from World War II GI slang, means “fouled up (or some other “F” word) beyond all recognition.” To the author, “fubarnomics” perfectly captures the sorry state of our economy today. In this witty, informative, and nonpartisan overview of contemporary economic ills, Wright takes a fresh approach to public policy by finding fault with both the government and the market, and with both Democrats and Republicans. The author convincingly shows that major economic trouble has almost always been the result of a hybrid failure, a combination of both bad policy making and marketplace deficiencies. He examines contemporary and historical examples of FUBAR across a wide spectrum, from mainstay social institutions such as higher education to cataclysmic national upheavals such as the Great Depression. In analyzing our most current crises, he offers unique insights into the recent crippling recession, including the subprime mortgage meltdown, as well as the looming healthcare crisis, and the perennial problem of social security. Beyond identifying the major problem areas, the author also offers practical solutions. From creating combined life-healthcare insurance policies and divorcing healthcare from employers, to government education subsidies for students only, and using long-term bonds to pay for private insurance that mimics social security, his suggestions are provocative and creative, and may just solve some of the thorniest problems facing us toda

America’s Greatest Democratic Presidents of the 20th Century: Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton

*Weaves the lives and presidencies of all 6 Democratic Presidents into one entertaining and educational narrative*Includes dozens of pictures of the presidents and important people, places, and events in their lives*Analyzes the legacies and accomplishments of each president. *Includes a Table of Contents. The Democrats who were elected president in the 20th century were responsible for a seemingly never ending list of accomplishments. Woodrow Wilson established the blueprint for the progressive presidents that would follow him, particularly Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson, while guiding the nation through World War I. FDR expanded that vision with his New Deal, completely revolutionizing the social contract between Americans and their federal government. While combating the Great Depression and the Axis powers in World War II, FDR has widely been considered one of the greatest presidents in history. When Roosevelt died in April 1945, Vice President Truman, somewhat unprepared for the Presidency, now had to fill some of the biggest shoes in American history. The new president had to usher America through victory in Europe in his first month and decide to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki a few months later, but the end of World War II produced only the first of many consequential decisions Truman would face during his nearly 8 years in office. As president, Truman would lay the groundwork for the next 50 years of American foreign policy, as the architect of Cold War containment, the man who signed off on the Marshall Plan, and the commander-in-chief during much of the Korean War. In many ways, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his young family were the perfect embodiment of the 60s. The decade began with a sense of idealism, personified by the attractive Kennedy, his beautiful and fashionable wife Jackie, and his young children. Months into his presidency, Kennedy exhorted the country to reach for the stars, calling upon the nation to send a man to the Mo

The Gettysburg Address: Using Lincoln’s Words to Tell the Whole Story of America’s Civil War, 1776 to the Present

”Four score and seven years ago … ” They’re the famous opening words of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address delivered in 1863, and they point back to the founding year of the United States: 1776. To understand the issues involved in the Civil War, it’s necessary to go that far back in American history. Based on the founding fathers’ vision for America, how free were the states to leave the Union if they wanted to? Did the federal government have the power and right to stop them? What did Lincoln really think about the issues of slavery and race? Those are just some of the questions this graphic novel examines. Divided into sections corresponding to the phrases of the Gettysburg Address, this is an enlightening read that brings the reader face to face with the complex historical issues behind the Civil War. More than just a comic book, it goes surprisingly in-depth and shows the causes of the Civil War were not as simple as you may think.Product DetailsDimensions: 6” W x 9” HSoftcover graphic novel, 224 pages, by Jonathan HennesseyArt by Aaron McConnellISBN: 978-0-06-196976-8

Captain America’s 10 Most Kick-Butt Moments

Captain America is a bada– oh, excuse us for almost using a bad language word! He is a kicker of butt. There’s no questioning that fact. He might not be the strongest hero in the Marvel Universe, but he’s certainly the most courageous. Whether he’s punching out Hitler, waging one-man wars or making gods and aliens defer to his command, Steve Rogers is never one to back down from a challenge.

Cap will be facing one of his toughest challenges yet as he defies his government and challenges the likes of Iron Man, Spider-Man and Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. In anticipation of that blockbuster movie, we’re counting down Steve Rogers’ ten most impressive moments from Marvel’s comics and films.

Playboy Names America’s 25 Sexiest Cities, New York Tops The List

Forget the best cities in the country. Playboy magazine released its list ranking America’s 25 Sexiest Cities on Wednesday and we’re already contemplating a move.

According to the magazine, the list was determined by two separate polls that looked at metrics including nightlife, general lifestyle habits and “an undercurrent of desire.” So it’s not exactly scientific.

New York City ranked #1 on the list, mainly because its residents were into “kinky” things and a LOT of sex. “The people are hot, the sex is prime quality and the frequency is high, averaging 138 times per year,” wrote Playboy. Considering NYC has the Museum of Sex and a topless book club, we have to agree with the ranking.

Scroll down to look at the cities that made the top 10 and head over to Playboy to see the rest:

ROYAL RAIN OUT: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed to Portsmouth, England, to support Olympic gold medalist Sir Ben Ainslie and his crew who are participants in the America’s Cup World Series race. The duo visited and took a tour of the royal naval base and met with the staff and team crews.

America’s Best Muslim Comedians To Star In First-Ever Muslim Funny Fest

What do Muslims in America have to laugh about?

Quite a lot, say the organizers of New York City’s — and possibly America’s — first-ever Muslim stand-up comedy festival.

The Muslim Funny Fest, slated to take place between July 21 and 23, will bring 14 Muslim entertainers together for a bit of comic relief.

Dean Obeidallah and Maysoon Zayid, the two comedians co-producing the event, have been putting together the New York Arab American Comedy Festival for the past 11 years. But this year, they felt it was important to rally around the shared experience of growing up Muslim in America, and use comedy to process that experience.

“Even though all the comedians are Muslims, we all have very different experiences, whether it is the culture we grew up in or the extent to which we practice our faith,” Zayid told The Huffington Post. “The common link that, sadly, brings us together is the bigotry and hatred we are currently experiencing as American Muslims, and I am hoping that the Muslim Funny Fest will do something to dilute that hate.”

American attitudes toward Muslims have taken a turn for the worse in recent years.

In 2010, close to half of Muslim-Americans said they’d experienced some form of personal racial or religious discrimination. And Muslims are viewed more coldly than any other major religious group in the country, according to a 2014 Pew Research Center poll.

“The United States is scared of two things: black people and Muslims,” comedian Preacher Moss says in a trailer for the fest. “I’ve got the best of both worlds.”

The festival will feature stars like Negin Farsad, a producer, actor and social justice activist, “Mo” Amer, who was part of the comedy tour “Allah Made Me Funny,” and Azhar Usman, a former attorney who has performed stand-up on five continents.

Obeidallah said that one of his biggest hopes for the festival is that the audience is diverse and that it includes non-Muslims of many faiths and backgrounds.

“We felt really strongly the need to show people that Muslims can be funny, that we have a sense of humor, and most importantly, that we can laugh at ourselves,” he said.

Of Thee I Zing: America’s Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

Of Thee I Zing: America’s Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots

While Laura Ingraham was walking through a Northern Virginia shopping mall one Saturday afternoon, it all became clear to her. Everywhere she turned, she saw signs of the impending disaster: zombie teens texting each other across a cafe table; a man having his eyebrows threaded at a kiosk; a fiftyish woman shoe-horned into a tube top and skinny jeans; and a storefront ad featuring a Victoria’s Secret model spilling out of her push-up bra and into the faces of young passersby. Ingraham wondered to herself, "Is this it? Is this what our forefathers fought for? What my parents struggled for? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is still having that two-for-one sale?" A menacing force surrounds us. We see it, we feel it, we know it. The country we love is in grave peril. While politicians and "experts" prattle on about the debt crisis at home, and terrorism abroad, a more insidious homegrown threat is emerging. It endangers our future and undermines our present. The uncomfortable truth is: We have become our own worst enemy. The culture we have created is now turning on us. We’re on the verge of drowning in our ignorance, arrogance, gluttony . . . can you believe there are only three shots of vanilla in a Caramel Macchiato? ? Now in an act of patriotic intervention the most-listened-to woman in talk radio casts her satirical eye upon all that ails American society. In this sharp-witted, comic romp, Laura Ingraham takes you on a guided tour through ten levels of our cultural hell. You know we’re in trouble when . . . – Airplane seats shrink–just as the passengers expand. – Celebrity baby names go from the peculiar (Apple, Stetson, and Daisy Boo) to the pathetic (Bamboo, Blanket, and Bronx). – People meticulously tend their virtual crops on Farmville, while their children eat takeout. – "Breaking News" usually means it happened yesterday. – The weddings last longer than the marriages. – Facebook has become a verb and reading has become an ancient art form. "Of Thee I Zing "is cultural commentary too funny to ignore, igniting a national conversation long past due. America, your cultural recovery begins here.

America’s Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression (Condensed Edition)

America’s Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression (Condensed Edition)

For nearly three decades, America has been gradually losing ground to the developed world in many critical areas. The result is that the American standard of living has been in decline for over two decades, with the middle class having been affected the most. Meanwhile, the rich have gotten wealthier and now America is a nation controlled by corporate America. Hidden by two-income households and open access to credit, declining living standards have gone unnoticed by most Americans. Spending beyond one’s means has become the American way of life and is encouraged by the government. In contrast, saving is almost unheard of in America. As a result, this once power nation has changed from the world’s largest creditor to the world’s largest debtor. Decades of over consumption by Americans can only last so long before a day of reckoning occurs. The deflation of the Internet Bubble resulted in the paper loss of over trillion dollars, yet most people seem to have already forgotten the most scandalous charades in U.S. history by Wall Street and corporate America. And now, as the retirement assets of tens of millions of Americans are in question, an even larger number are caught up in the largest real estate bubble in our history. As we enter the two next decades, 76 million baby boomers will retire, most of them in poverty. Thus, the generation that was responsible for creating the greatest bull market in U.S. history may, through no choice of its own, also be the same group that causes an economic meltdown due to decades of government mismanagement, inadequate planning, and overconsumption. During this same time frame, many expect the global oil production is gradually decline due to whatis known as the peak oil theory. Obviously, this has enormous consequences of its own. Today, America is in the final preparatory stages that will lead to a massive economic meltdown resulting in the Next Great Depression, as over 46 million Americans already have no healthcare insurance, Social Security will be inadequate for the 76 million baby boomers who will retire over the next several years, energy prices will remain high for some time, and for the first time ever, Americans can no longer live with the comfort knowing that they are safe on their own soil. These issues will only get worse and when the appropriate triggers are set off, a domino effect will commence, sending the stock and bond markets into a downward spiral. This book claims to represent the most detailed and exhaustive analysis of America’s current and future economic plight, as well as that of its capital markets. Rather than making bold claims supported by scant data, this book makes use of several hundred figures, tables, and charts, as well as over 700 references to support the premise that a depression is inevitable for America. Finally, the final three chapters address economic and market risks and provide investment guidance and strategy for investors to position themselves to profit befo

Blue Revolution: Unmaking America’s Water Crisis

Blue Revolution: Unmaking America’s Water Crisis

Americans see water as abundant and cheap: we turn on the faucet and out it gushes, for less than a penny a gallon. We use more water than any other culture in the world, much to quench what’s now our largest crop-the lawn. Yet most Americans cannot name the river or aquifer that flows to our taps, irrigates our food, and produces our electricity. And most don’t realize these freshwater sources are in deep trouble. “Blue Revolution” exposes the truth about the water crisis-driven not as much by lawn sprinklers as by a tradition that has encouraged everyone, from homeowners to farmers to utilities, to tap more and more. But the book also offers much reason for hope. Award-winning journalist Cynthia Barnett argues that the best solution is also the simplest and least expensive: a water ethic for America. Just as the green movement helped build awareness about energy and sustainability, so a blue movement will reconnect Americans to their water, helping us value and conserve our most life-giving resource. Avoiding past mistakes, living within our water means, and turning to “local water” as we do local foods are all part of this new, blue revolution. Reporting from across the country and around the globe, Barnett shows how people, businesses, and governments have come together to dramatically reduce water use and reverse the water crisis. Entire metro areas, such as San Antonio, Texas, have halved per capita water use. Singapore’s “closed water loop” recycles every drop. New technologies can slash agricultural irrigation in half: businesses can save a lot of water-and a lot of money-with designs as simple as recycling air-conditioning condensate. The first book to call for a national water ethic, “Blue Revolution” is also a powerful meditation on water and community in America.

Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America’s Favorite Food

Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America’s Favorite Food

Anthropologist Steve Striffler begins this book in a poultry processing plant, drawing on his own experiences there as a worker. He also reports on the way chickens are raised today and how they are consumed. What he discovers about America’s favorite meat is not just unpleasant but a powerful indictment of our industrial food system. The process of bringing chicken to our dinner tables is unhealthy for all concerned-from farmer to factory worker to consumer. The book traces the development of the poultry industry since the Second World War, analyzing the impact of such changes as the destruction of the family farm, the processing of chicken into nuggets and patties, and the changing makeup of the industrial labor force. The author describes the lives of immigrant workers and their reception in the small towns where they live. The conclusion is clear: there has to be a better way. Striffler proposes radical but practical change, a plan that promises more humane treatment of chickens, better food for the consumer, and fair payment for food workers and farmers.

Prada Drops Out of America’s Cup

MILAN — Luna Rossa wants out.
Prada’s sailing team said Thursday it will no longer be taking part in the 35th America’s Cup, withdrawing from the competition in disaccord with new regulations voted by organizers. Citing “serious implications” determined by the overturning of rules unanimously adopted by the teams in force since June 2014, principal Patrizio Bertelli thanked his team for the work done during the past year, underscoring that its efforts have been “frustrated by this maneuver that is unprecedented in the history of the America’s Cup.”
“However, in sports, as in life, one cannot always go for compromise, after compromise, after compromise; sometimes it is necessary to make decisions that are painful but must be clear cut, as only these can make everybody aware of the drifts of the system and therefore set the basis for the future: respect of legality and sportsmanship.”
Lamenting “a lack of credibility and uncertain technical grounds for what should instead be the most sophisticated sailing competition in the world,” the team also highlighted “a waste of important resources already invested based on the rules that were sanctioned in June last year.”
The Luna Rossa team was working in Sardinia to set up the new boat for

John Oliver Explains How America’s Neglected Infrastructure Is Like A Lego Set

If you weren’t aware that U.S. roads, bridges and dams are in serious state of disrepair, allow John Oliver to put it plainly: “We aren’t just flirting with disaster, we’re rounding third base and asking if disaster has any condoms.”

On Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver broke down the sorry state of America’s neglected infrastructure, including “hold your breath” bridges, killer potholes, a severe lack of inspectors and potential floods from our half-century old dams.

“Much like most Botox recipients and competitive cloggers, the average dam is 52 years old and has something deeply broken inside of it,” said Oliver.

As Oliver explains, The White House is counting on the closure of corporate tax loopholes, no one wants to raise the gas tax and House Speaker John Boehner has his own ideas about fixing the problem which involves two years of not doing anything followed by ignoring Oliver’s phone calls, emails and Vines.

During a montage of politicians cutting ribbons with oversized scissors, Oliver also points out that repairing infrastructure isn’t as “sexy” as building anew, and backs it up with the perfect Legos analogy.

“Infrastructure is like Legos,” he said. “Building is fun, destroying is fun, but a Lego maintenance set would be the most boring fucking toy in the world.”

To top it off, Oliver presents a trailer for a new kind of summer blockbuster movie, one that’s more about fixing cracks and less about explosions.

In The Wake Of ‘The Interview,’ A Brief Look At America’s Film Censorship Through The Years

As we’re bombarded with developments surrounding Sony Pictures’ decision to cancel the release of “The Interview” in the wake of terrorism threats, we’re reminded of America’s long history with film censorship — one that, thankfully, doesn’t often rear its head anymore. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s comedy stars Rogen and James Franco as journalists ordered to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un after landing a rare interview with him. It’s an (almost) unheard-of case of executives electing to pull a movie; historically, it took a court order to strong-arm studios into cutting their losses over a controversial project. This is, after all, an entertainment industry that operated under the Motion Picture Production Code (aka the Hays Code), which regulated what could be seen onscreen from 1930 to 1968. That set of regulations brought about an onslaught of imbroglios over what did and didn’t violate standards. We’ve compiled a list of several movies that act as precursors to the censorship questions being raised with the “Interview” controversy. It only skims the surface of film restrictions in American history, but it’ll give you an idea of some of the battles filmmakers and distributors have faced over the years.

A People at War: Civilians and Soldiers in America’s Civil War

A People at War: Civilians and Soldiers in America’s Civil War

Claiming more than 600000 lives the American Civil War had a devastating impact on countless numbers of common soldiers and civilians even as it brought freedom to millions. This book shows how average Americans coped with despair as well as hope during this vast upheaval. A People at War brings to life the full humanity of the war’s participants from women behind their plows to their husbands in army camps; from refugees from slavery to their former masters; from Mayflower descendants to freshly recruited Irish sailors. We discover how people confronted their own feelings about the war itself and how they coped with emotional challenges (uncertainty exhaustion fear guilt betrayal grief) as well as physical ones (displacement poverty illness disfigurement). The book explores the violence beyond the battlefield illuminating the sharp-edged conflicts of neighbor against neighbor whether in guerilla warfare or urban riots. The authors travel as far west as China and as far east as Europe taking us inside soldiers’ tents prisoner-of-war camps plantations tenements churches Indian reservations and even the cargo holds of ships. They stress the war years but also cast an eye at the tumultuous decades that preceded and followed the battlefield confrontations. An engrossing account of ordinary people caught up in life-shattering circumstances A People at War captures how the Civil War rocked the lives of rich and poor black and white parents and children-and how all these Americans pushed generals and presidents to make the conflict a people’s war.

Selecting the Mercury Seven: The Search for America’s First Astronauts

The names of the seven Mercury astronauts were announced in April 1959 amid a flurry of publicity and patriotism. This work provides biographical details of all thirty-two finalists for the seven coveted places as America’s pioneering astronauts. All of the candidates were among the nation’s elite pilots involved in testing new supersonic aircraft capabilities. Most had served as wartime fighter and bomber pilots; some were test pilots on top secret and sophisticated aviation projects, while others were fleet admirals, prisoners of war, and proposed pilots for spaceflight programs such as the Dyna-Soar (X-20). The names of all 32 finalists have been kept secret until very recently. "Selecting the Mercury Seven" also relates the history and difficulties behind the initial choice of candidates. The lives, motivations, military careers, and achievements of the unsuccessful twenty-five finalists are explored first in fully authorized biographies. Test pilots for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, each man has a fascinating and very different story to tell. All thirty-two men had to endure meticulous, demeaning, and brutal week-long medical examinations at the Lovelace Clinic in New Mexico. This was followed by another torturous week at the Wright Aeromedical Laboratory in Ohio, where they were subjected to extreme fitness and physiological testing, the sole purpose of which was to sort out the Supermen from the near-supermen. The final part of the book examines the accomplishments and spaceflights of the seven successful candidates, bringing their amazing stories right up to date.

Liberty and Freedom: A Visual History of America’s Founding Ideas

Liberty and Freedom: A Visual History of America’s Founding Ideas

Liberty and freedom: Americans agree that these values are fundamental to our nation, but what do they mean? How have their meanings changed through time? In this new volume of cultural history, David Hackett Fischer shows how these varying ideas form an intertwined strand that runs through the core of American life. Fischer examines liberty and freedom not as philosophical or political abstractions, but as folkways and popular beliefs deeply embedded in American culture. Tocqueville called them “habits of the heart.” From the earliest colonies, Americans have shared ideals of liberty and freedom, but with very different meanings. Like DNA these ideas have transformed and recombined in each generation. The book arose from Fischer’s discovery that the words themselves had differing origins: the Latinate “liberty” implied separation and independence. The root meaning of “freedom” (akin to “friend”) connoted attachment: the rights of belonging in a community of freepeople. The tension between the two senses has been a source of conflict and creativity throughout American history. Liberty & Freedom studies the folk history of those ideas through more than 400 visions, images, and symbols. It begins with the American Revolution, and explores the meaning of New England’s Liberty Tree, Pennsylvania’s Liberty Bells, Carolina’s Liberty Crescent, and “Don’t Tread on Me” rattlesnakes. In the new republic, the search for a common American symbol gave new meaning to Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, Miss Liberty, and many other icons. In the Civil War, Americans divided over liberty and freedom. Afterward, new universal visions were invented by people who had formerly been excluded from a free society–African Americans, American Indians, and immigrants. The twentieth century saw liberty and freedom tested by enemies and contested at home, yet it brought the greatest outpouring of new visions, from Franklin Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms to Martin Luther King’s “dream” to Janis Joplin’s “not

One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America’s Future

The acclaimed brain surgeon and bestselling author’s plan for restoring America’s greatness Dr. Ben Carson made headlines with his keynote at the National Prayer Breakfast in February 2013. Standing just a few feet from President Obama, the neurosurgeon offered a common sense critique of liberal government, calling for a return to our historic culture of personal responsibility, free markets, and upward mobility. The speech instantly went viral; “The Wall Street Journal” even ran an editorial, “Ben Carson for President.” Now, in this sequel to their #1 “New York Times “bestseller “America the Beautiful,” Dr. and Mrs. Carson offer a bold plan to stop the country’s slide into fiscal and moral decay. Avoiding the political correctness of politicians and the animosity of Washington lawyers, Dr. Carson calls for respectful discussion and disagreement, with no subjects off limits. Applying the problem-solving skills he honed as a surgeon, he takes on tough issues such as education, health care, family values, race relations, taxes, charity, and the role of faith in public life. In his journey from poverty to the top of his field, Dr. Carson has lived the American dream. He shows how we can save that dream for our future generations, by restoring a moral, informed citizenry that will support “one nation, under God, indivisible.”

America’s Last Real Home Front

America’s Last Real Home Front

The leadup to America’s entry into WWII was a clash between two national heroes: President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Aviator/Isolationist Charles Lindbergh. Their harsh debate was finally silenced by Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. The author, who experienced the war as a teenager, recalls the nation’s overnight coming together, the Fireside Chats and how the American people produced the greatest arsenal in history through sheer determination. often-strained teamwork and heavy personal sacrifices. While hundreds of thousands of their loved ones were being killed or wounded overseas, some American men and women worked seven days a week. They learned to live with limited food, clothing and gasoline, accepted and paid higher taxes, salvaged everything from newspapers to kitchen grease, put up with a horribly complex rationing system and loaned their government billions of dollars in bonds and stamps. The author also lists 14 areas which may require special Home Front attention in case of another global war.
