Sister Act! Watch the KarJenners Pose Around the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Sexy Gala Video

Kim, Kendall, and Kylie take the Met!

Keeping Up with the Kardashians stars Kim Kardashian West, Kendall JennerKylie Jenner and mom Kris Jenner appeared to have a ball at Monday’s 2018 Met Gala, walking the red carpet of the Costume Institute’s annual benefit and sharing a slew of selfies from inside the ball.

But while the three sisters didn’t pose together for photographers, they united inside New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art where “they struck poses against the gorgeous walls of the French Wrightsman galleries” in a video shared to Vogue‘s Instagram page.

Meanwhile, all three reality stars looked glam on fashion’s biggest night out.

Though all seemed to skip the over-the-top couture designer duds that stars like Cardi B, Rihanna, and Katy Perry costumed themselves in for the event’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme, the KarJenners found their own way to stand out.

Kardashian West, 37, looked like liquid gold in her custom chainmail Versace dress featuring crosses embroidered on the bodice and hip. She teamed the look with double cross necklaces, super long extensions and a Cleopatra-like makeup look featuring a smokey cat eye and a very ’90s over-lined lip that would make co-host Donatella Versace  proud.

Kendall, 22, rocked an off-the-shoulder ruched couture top with sheer elbow-length gloves and matching “long train” couture pants designed for her by close friend, Off-White creative director Virgil Abloh.

The model was “reminiscent of an angelic cloud sought to signify Roman Catholicism in renaissance art – embodying purity and delicacy of a modern angel,” according the release sent by the brand.

Meanwhile, Kylie, 20, made her post-baby return to the red carpet just three-months after welcoming daughter Stormi Webster.

Attending alongside boyfriend Travis Scott, she wore a head-turning strapless black Alexander Wang gown with a stomach cut-out, mirrored sunglasses and Chopard diamond earrings.

“We were all so nerve-wracked because it was such a big moment, but she killed it,” makeup artist Ariel Tejada told PeopleStyle of her look. “It’s refreshing for somebody to walk onto a carpet looking refreshed and glowing and just ready to take on the event.”

What to Watch: Sportswear Dollars Now Spread Around the World

It’s no surprise that some of the stalwarts in the sportswear arena have been struggling of late.
Ralph Lauren, whose polo has long been an industry staple, is in the midst of a major restructuring as revenues continue to shrink. After a rocky 18 months under Stefan Larsson as chief executive officer, the company named Patrice Louvet of Procter & Gamble to the top spot to help the brand navigate the rapidly changing fashion landscape.
But the company is not alone is searching out ways to reverse its fortunes. Nautica recently had a change at the top, tapping Brendan Sullivan from VF Corp., its parent company, to succeed Karen Murray as president. And J. Crew has also had its share of problems: longtime chief Millard “Mickey” Drexler stepped down as chief executive officer and handed the reins to West Elm’s James Brett.
As these companies work to right their ships, other brands have started to make headway. Thanks to a Nineties resurgence, Tommy Hilfiger is hot again and other labels such as Vineyard Vines and Psycho Bunny continue to gain momentum. Although the bulk of the sales for these large American brands come through bricks-and-mortar stores, the online competition continues to heighten, particularly

Fashion Firms Partake in Solar Eclipse Viewings Around the Country

LET THE SUNSHINE IN: While many companies held informal gatherings on their office rooftops to view the solar eclipse Monday, others initiated more formal plans for the event. Warby Parker bussed its Nashville headquarters’ employees to celebrate the eclipse at its Nashville store, Warby Parker Edgehill. The party included a performance by Futurebirds, then during the city’s one minute and 57 seconds of eclipse-induced darkness, the Nashville-based ALIAS Chamber Ensemble played a composition that they crafted especially for the occasion. Martin’s, a local barbecue joint, fired up lunch on-site for attendees.
Lividini & Co., a fashion public relations and brand strategy company at 264 West 40th Street in New York, entertained some 30 to 40 people on their rooftop Monday afternoon, including staff from other companies in the building, such as Robert Graham, as well as media. Bottled water and stars and moon cookies were served, along with sun-protection glasses.
Nike held a viewing party on it Beaverton, Ore, campus, while Nautilus threw a viewing party for hundreds in their corporate office with a glasses-decorating station, brunch and drink stations for specialty coffees and smoothies.

Here’s What The First ‘Harry Potter’ Book Looks Like Around The World

In its 20 years on this planet Earth, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — or Philosopher’s, if you’re British — has been officially translated into 68 languages (and unofficially even more than that).

Naturally, some aspects of J.K. Rowling’s characters and plot require a bit of finessing so they make sense in languages other than her native English. The verbal clues that help readers imagine the school houses of Slytherin and Ravenclaw, for example, turn into “Serpentard” and “Serrdaigle” (roughly “snake” and “eagle talon”) in French. In German, “The Mirror of Erised” becomes “Der Spiegel Nerhegeb” — “nerhegeb” being the German word for “desire” spelled backwards.

Character names aren’t safe from alteration in translation, either. Buckbeak the Hippogriff becomes “Hardodziób,” roughly meaning “haughty beak,” in Poland. In Iceland, Crookshanks the cat becomes “Skakklappi,” or “crook-legged.” The wayward owl Pigwidgeon simply is “Kvík” in Slovak, or “squeak.”

Rowling’s affinity for puns requires some smart work on the part of the translator, as well; in a recent discussion over whether Ron Weasley and Lavender Brown ever had sex on the “Harry Potter” sub-Reddit board, users mused over the differences in translation over a scene during Divination class. After Lavender realizes she’s found Uranus, Ron requests whether he can “see Uranus, too.” Oh, ho, ho — but for readers in other languages to get the joke, the pun had to be altered somewhat, from “Uranus” to simply a “heavenly body” (that Ron would like to see, too). Ten points to the translator who had to finesse that one.

The text isn’t the only thing that has changed as the story of “Harry Potter” traveled from country to country. Various publishers chose to stray from the American cover illustrated by Mary GrandPré or the U.K. version created by Thomas Taylor, while others did not. Here are 21 magical covers from the first “Harry Potter” book that stole our hearts.

Photographs from ‘A Day Without Women’ and Women’s Protests Around the World

On International Women’s Day, women around the world are participating in “A Day Without Women,” a strike designed to show women’s impact on the global economy. One estimate by the Center for American Progress found that if every woman in the U.S. refused to work, it would cost the country $ 21 billion in GDP for a single day, or $ 7.6 trillion for an entire year.

Many of those who cannot take a day off of work are wearing red or patronizing only female-owned establishments. Organizers are asking men to care for children and support family-oriented policies at work. And in cities across America and the globe, women are rallying for equal pay and equal rights. Here are images from the protests and strikes.

World War II Veterans From Around The World Tell Their Own Moving Stories

The word “veteran,” at least to Americans, is likely to elicit an image of a reverent man, chin held high. But, as photographer Sasha Maslov illustrates in his new book, Veterans: Faces of World War II, veterans from a single, recent war include a huge swath of people, with wildly different perspectives.

One of his subjects ― from Austin, Texas ― lamented that he got swept up in the draft and had to witness the loss of so many friends. But several others signed up willingly, including Themistoklis Marinos of Athens, Greece, who voiced his enthusiasm for fighting “against invaders.” Maslov took Marinos’s portrait sitting in his living room, surrounded by crosses and other religious iconography.

His story is among the dozens told and chronicled by Maslov, who aimed with this book to collect veteran stories from around the world and to thereby illustrate just how far-reaching the effects of World War II were.

“The scale of this conflict was so large that I wanted to show as many angles of it as I could,” Maslov told HuffPost in an interview. “Then I discovered that in many countries, including the United States, the view of World War II is somewhat shaped by what is being taught in schools or what the ‘government line’ is, so it often isn’t accurate. That’s why it was so important to get the stories of the people who actually participated in the war and witnessed it first hand.”

When he began the project in 2011, Maslov wanted to be sure to capture not only his subjects but their environments, and how their homes and other personal spaces reflected their personalities. “The folks I photographed for this project had lived in their houses for a long time, so their homes said a lot about who they were,” Maslov said.

“With the rise of hatred globally, maybe this is a good time for this,” Maslov said. “What I’m afraid of is that people in need of history lessons now are not seeking education.”

Read a few excerpts from Maslov’s book below:

Imants Zeltins, from Bauska, Latvia

“By February 1, 1945, the Americans had invaded Germany. The soldiers put signs on hospital doors that forbade patients to leave the area. After a few days,
all the Latvians there got together and literally cried, not because the war was ending, but because they knew Latvia would be once again occupied by the Russians.”

Richard Overton from Austin, Texas, United States

“I didn’t want to go to war. Uncle Sam picked me; he enlisted me. […] I lost a lot of friends. Everybody in the army was my friend. I did regret going, but after I went, I was glad I went. I learned a lot.”‘

Anna Nho, from Almaty, Kazakhstan

“In 1937, many Koreans were deported from the Far East [of Russia]. We were transferred to Karaganda in Kazakhstan. They put up tents for housing. A few families lived in each one, but it was so cold that someone died every day.”

Themistoklis Marinos, from Athens, Greece

“I finished my school in Zakynthos and then moved to Athens to study economics. To finance my studies, I was also working odd jobs. When the Italians attacked Greece, I was called to arms, and I stopped studying.

“When the war was declared, we were very enthusiastic, and we were looking forward to fighting against the invaders. The Germans and Italians took over Greece, and I left for Crete, which was still free.

“With no practical experience in the military, I took part in the Battle of Crete.”

Jaku Kikuchi, from Tsukuba-Shi, Japan

“All these American planes would fly over and bomb us. When the Japanese airplanes met them in the air, the Americans would shoot them down. I do remember being very scared then.”

How To Live Longer So You Can Be Around For People Who Need You

Who wouldn’t want to live to see 100? We bet Ruth Bader Ginsburg would. Imagine a few extra years to spend with loved ones, see the world, or cast the deciding vote in even more high court decisions.

Here are several research-backed tips to help you live longer. They’re so simple, you can work them into the busiest routines ― even that of, hypothetically, a Supreme Court justice.

1. Follow a Mediterranean diet.

A 2011 study found that elderly individuals who eat fish, produce and foods high in healthy fats may have a 20 percent increased chance of living longer compared to their peers who don’t follow a so-called Mediterranean diet. This would definitely apply to people who are 84.

2. Spend time with good friends.

Strong social bonds can have a positive influence on your health. Research shows those who have close connections with others are at lower risk of dying early than those who don’t. So don’t shut out your closest pals, even those who vehemently disagree with you politically.

3. Embrace aging.

Getting older is the one thing every person must deal with ― so don’t make a federal case out of it! A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that adults who had a positive outlook on aging lived an average of seven years longer than those who had a dissenting opinion of the aging process.

4. Consider getting married. (Or remarried. Or supporting marriage for everyone.)

More good news for people who just want to have a state-recognized family of their own: Research shows that marriage can boost a person’s wellbeing. A 2013 Danish study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology also found that “among men in Denmark, it is more dangerous to be unmarried or divorced than to be married to another man.” At press time, same-sex marriages are legal in the United States.

5. Manage your stress.

This one is really important for everyone, especially for those with a high-profile career or a full caseload to judge. Studies show that excessive or chronic stress can shave time off your lifespan, which could mean missing out on watershed moments in American jurisprudence. Looking for some ways to keep your worries at bay? Here are 100 tricks to get you started (that also happens to be a wonderful age).

6. Help others.

There’s power in lending a hand. Those who volunteer for selfless reasons live longer than those who do it for more personal reasons or those who aren’t altruistic at all, according to a 2011 study. Or, as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently said of the best way to live a meaningful life, “One lives not just for oneself, but for one’s community.”

7.  Hit the gym.

Just a little bit of exercise can work wonders. Being active can extend your life by about four to seven years, or well past the next presidential election. The recommended amount of physical activity is approximately 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Remember to consult your doctor or a fitness expert before beginning any new exercise regimen. (Washington, D.C.-based trainer Bryant Johnson is supposed to be great.)

Students Around The Country Are Sending Letters To Trump Via A Large Vagina Sculpture

On April 21, President Donald Trump is slated to receive an unusual package.

A campaign called #ReadMyLips is inviting women from around the world to write the president with their convictions and concerns regarding women’s rights and health under Trump’s administration.

The letters will then be delivered to the White House in a most conspicuous packaging ― a large vagina sculpture made by Dan Castelli, a former specialty-prop fabricator at “Saturday Night Live.”

The project is the brainchild of Mogul, a social media platform specifically designed for women. #ReadMyLips came into being after students from universities around the country flooded the site with their hopes and fears following the 2016 election.

Mogul opted to reroute these concerns straight to the source, via the vehicle of a giant vagina. “By having the statue as this shape, it empowers women to be proud of their sexuality and bodies,” Michelle Wen, a student organizer from Cornell, explained in a statement. “Women have nothing to hide; we only have our determination, spirit, and strong minds to be proud of.”

The #ReadMyLips effort, originally brewed among 24 universities, spread to encompass thousands of colleges around the world. “The #ReadMyLips campaign is hugely important, not just in representing women across America, but in representing women across the world,” Oxford organizer Sasha Skovron said.

“Through this movement, we can send a message loud and clear: nobody has the right to deny a woman the freedom to make decisions over her own body. President Trump poses a great threat to this freedom, and so whether an American citizen or not, #ReadMyLips stands for women everywhere.”

To participate, make yourself a Mogul profile and post a message to President Trump here. If you share the movement on Facebook, you’ll get a free #ReadMyLips pin

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox Warns Donald Trump: ‘Don’t Mess Around With Us’

Mexico’s former president Vicente Fox has issued some stern words of warning to President Donald Trump.

“Don’t mess around with us Señor Trump, because if you look for it, you’re going to find it,” he said on a special Mexico edition of Conan O’Brien’s late night show that aired Wednesday.

Fox arrived for the interview bearing a gift of cowboy boots for O’Brien, after earlier trolling Trump on Twitter during his first major speech to congress Tuesday.

The shoes were inscribed with the words “No Fucking Wall” — in reference to his oft-repeated statement that Mexico would not pay for Trump’s proposed southern border barrier.

Fox cited the failure of the Berlin Wall that once divided the German city as an example of such barriers not working, before describing the people of the United States and Mexico as “neighbors,” “friends,” “partners” and “roommates.”

Many Mexicans are doing great work in and for the United States, he stressed. “And now they wanna kick them in the ass and throw them out,” Fox said of the U.S. policy. “That’s gonna be a big, big loss for United States.”

Fox, who was Mexico’s president from 2000 to 2006, also had some words of advice for Trump ― should he care to heed them.

“If he wants to negotiate we have to go for the whole enchilada, not just one piece,” said Fox. “He has to learn that we are his best friends and partners.”

Check out the full interview above.

Two citizens have paid to be sent around the moon, SpaceX has revealed, in its Dragon spacecraft.

The exact amount wasn’t specified, other than it required a “significant deposit.” The mission is set to take place during the second quarter of 2018.

“Designed from the beginning to carry humans, the Dragon spacecraft already has a long flight heritage. These missions will build upon that heritage, extending it to deep space mission operations, an important milestone as we work towards our ultimate goal of transporting humans to Mars.”

Rats Beware: These Broom-Toting College Students Don’t Mess Around

This plan is as elaborate as the Mousetrap board game.

A group of college roommates attending Duquesene University in Pittsburgh faced a daunting problem when a large rat moved in to their space. Instead of cowering in fear at the threat ― like many would ― they banded together to defeat the “Rat King.”

Their plan required patience, precision, and a ridiculously clutch sweep of a broom. The women blocked off the “Rat King’s” route and prepared for battle.

“We were all freaking out,” Jody Mackin told Buzzfeed News.

After they set the trap, Mackin and her friends sprung into action. Video shows the rat flopping down the stairs like a rag doll before the boyfriend of one of the roommates sweets the animal outside.

Many Twitter users hailed the women as heroes for creating the ingenious trap.

But some felt sorry for the rat.

But many were happy that the rodent escaped intact.

Seven Steps to Completely Turn Your Life Around This Year

How can I change my life completely in the next year or two? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Max Lukominskyi, CMO at Sliceplanner, on Quora:

Changing your life completely is a huge step that requires a major effort. Nonetheless, the result is worth the struggle. Commit to this 7-step challenge and you will arrive at the desired destination already next year:

Begin With The End In Mind. While making a decision to commit to something, take a moment to get it crystal clear what change you would like to experience and what kind of person you would like to become within the next year or two. Imagine how you achieve your goal and try to design a blueprint of how you are going to move towards your desired destination. Then you will know exactly what steps to take.

Declutter Your Life. Slow down and take some time to simplify your life. Get rid of the things that have always been holding you back. Get rid of the stuff that associates with the life you would like to change. Stop comparing yourself with others and prioritize your goals. Clear your mind from the unnecessary thoughts and create more space in your life for new pure energy and massive wins.

Master Your Mindset. Embrace the truth: Everything worth doing is going to be neither easy nor fast. It holds true for this challenge as well. Therefore, be ready to face tough obstacles and deal with the unexpected issues. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean you cannot succeed. It only means you need to be ready. Stop doubting your strengths. Make the goal to change your life completely your priority. Become obsessed. And get down to work.

Start Small. Your life is a set of little seemingly innocuous decisions, choices and actions. The repeated ones constitute your daily habits. These are the ones that eventually shape your life and define your level of productivity and success. Start small and strive to develop a good habit attitude by breaking bad habits and developing only routines that are the perfect fit for the life you would like to live.

Grow 0.1% A Day. Whatever you want to achieve, try to approach that goal with the constant pace: 0.1% a day. Since your personal growth has a compounding effect, these seemingly trivial steps will eventually allow you to grow 37.78% a year and become multiple times better than you are now already in two years. Commit to continuous and consistent growth. Do the things that take you closer to your aspirations every single day.

Avoid Negative People. Your environment is crucial. The chances are that you are not likely to experience any change if you stay in the stagnant and not challenging environment. You need to surround yourself with people who are better, smarter, stronger and faster. Choose your environment wisely and avoid negative people who are always too pessimistic and skeptical towards your goals. Get around greatness and make sure the people who you hang out with are supportive and inspiring.

Stamos shared a goofy picture of himself with Lourd and told the star “love you” in his post.

Passing Around the Doctor’s Pet (Bimbo Aphrodisiac MFM Menage Exhibition Erotica)

Passing Around the Doctor’s Pet (Bimbo Aphrodisiac MFM Menage Exhibition Erotica)

Hopelessly struck by Dr. James Vellano’s good looks, celebrity renown, and of course his erotic pleasure therapy techniques, Kelly Mundson has surrendered herself to the famous researcher’s experimental project to create the perfect sex kitten: voluptuous, horny, and eager to please. A month ago she was just a shy intern drifting without direction, but through intense and extensive pleasure therapy – along with the physical modifications that have given her the body to make any man go wild – she has proven a flawless test subject for the doctor’s highly charged experiments in creating his ideal bimbo. In the wake of his success, Dr. Vellano’s lab is moving to a private facility and he’s sent Kelly to stay with his friend across town. But after weeks living in a world of eager obedience and simple pleasures, she’s become dependent on the man that transformed her – and on the pleasure treatment regimen that satisfied her overcharged sex drive. Deprived of them both, the sheltered, pleasure-loving test subject soon finds herself helplessly horny and helplessly lost in the big city, trying to pretend she doesn’t have a body specifically designed to make all the men around her wild with desire. She wants to be a good girl and find Dr. Vellano’s friend, but soon she’ll be unable to resist even the most casual advances, and it’s only a matter of time before someone comes along to take advantage of the situation. Reader Advisory: This story is for mature audiences only and features intensely erotic situations, bimbofication, the use of potent aphrodisiacs, multiple partners and rough group sex, public exhibition, a dominant older man and the increasingly submissive, fertile young subject of his experiments. All characters are 18 or older. ExcerptMy skimpy clothes were clinging to me as I stepped in out of the rain. I was shivering, just a little bit, and it felt good to close the door behind me and feel the warm air of the bar wash over my chilled body, even if the mingling sme

360 Degrees Longitude: One Family’s Journey Around the World

360 Degrees Longitude: One Family’s Journey Around the World

Much more than a travel narrative 360 Degrees Longitude: One Family’s Journey Around the World is a glimpse at what it means to be a global citizen”-a progressively changing view of the world as seen through the eyes of an American family of four. After more than a decade of planning, John Higham and his wife September bid their high-tech jobs and suburban lives good-bye, packed up their home and set out with two children, ages eight and eleven, to travel around the world. In the course of the next 52 weeks they crossed 24 time zones, visited 28 countries and experienced a lifetime of adventures. Making their way across the world, the Highams discovered more than just different foods and cultures; they also learned such diverse things as a Chilean mall isn’t the best place to get your ears pierced, and that elephants appreciate flowers just as much as the next person. But most importantly, they learned about each other, and just how much a family can weather if they do it together.360 Degrees Longitude employs Google’s wildly popular Google Earth as a compliment to the narrative. Using your computer you can spin the digital globe to join the adventure cycling through Europe, feeling the cold stare of a pride of lions in Africa, and breaking down in the Andes. Packed with photos, video and text, the online Google Earth companion adds a dimension not possible with mere paper and ink. Fly over the terrain of the Inca Trail or drill down to see the majesty of the Swiss Alps-without leaving the comfort of your chair.

How to Turn Your Life Around

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” — Anais Nin

I had a hard time beginning this blog yesterday because, frankly, I was in a bit of a slump. I blame it on the endless left brain edits I had to make after the completion of a lengthy right brain novel. Add to that a good dose of tedium generated by the anticipated marketing effort and a smattering of grief as I buried my latest characters, and you have the full catastrophe. If you’re an author, you get the picture. If not, just follow me into a tangled forest somewhere in the Deep South complete with dense underbrush and huge overhanging thickets of Spanish moss. Now look up; way up. Tied to the branch of an ancient live oak is a slender but sturdy vine.

Hanging in wait.

I’ve seen this vine too many times not to understand that the choice is mine. I can climb it in good faith, lean back and swing into a sunlit clearing, or I can loop it around my creative neck and yank. In other words, I can find a way to reinvent myself after the completion of every story, or I can choke on the lack of creative oxygen a more practical job would provide. Writing is a tough business.

But it isn’t the only one.

Almost anyone in any career, relationship, or life situation has seen that figurative vine. Do we use it to swing into: new city, new career, new pair of arms? Or do we set up camp in the forest and whine? Do we disable ourselves or enable ourselves? Finding a way out of stagnation isn’t easy, especially if we assume the victim role. We’ve all done it: “You have no idea how hard this is!” “Nobody understands my pain!” The truth is, at least initially, most people prefer the comfort of a familiar negative to the discomfort of a positive change, however promising.

Sometimes we just want to yank the vine.

But giving up is the easy route, at least short term. I know I’d be miserable in any other occupation, no matter how defeated I may feel in a given moment. One thing I understand by now is that action is an inescapable part of the solution. I can take action now, or I can marinate in misery for another day or another year. It’s up to me. But at some point I have to sit my butt down in front of the computer and type. At some point I have to begin a new book or a new job. No one else can do it for me. But where to begin?

First, climb the vine.

For me, any upward movement out of an inert situation involves mental preparation–or what I like to call — meditation. Performed properly, meditation is one of the finest mental and spiritual panaceas available. Think of it as a sorbet, a mental palette cleanser. Or for the technically minded — a cache scrubber. For the non-techs, cache is the part of your computer where old links, passwords, and search histories are stored. After a while, all it really does is slow the computer down and create automatic responses that, especially if we are trying to do something new, are distracting and largely irrelevant. Old cache consumes critical space that could better be used to process new information more quickly. Cleaning the cache is an essential component of computer hygiene.

The practice of meditation is an essential component of mental hygiene.

Meditation, even ten minutes a day, has the potential to clear old habits, emotional patterns, automatic responses, and fixed belief systems that drag us down and shackle us to the past. Meditation combined with the clear intention to begin anew, has the power to ignite possibility. Possibility creates probability. Meditation quiets — and with practice, silences — the nagging voice that taunts, ‘Why bother? You’ll never get anywhere anyway. You’re finished.’

As a writer, I know I will never create a new story by re-using the same material over and over again. Somehow I have to drag my mind out of the past and into conscious and purposeful movement that exists nowhere but ‘now’. It’s safe to say that the reinvention of anyone’s life must apply the same principles–clean the cache and start fresh. Climb the vine. Life is a constant invention or it’s nothing at all. And that’s the good news. So how do you turn your life around?

One blissful meditative moment at a time.

If you’re in a dead-end job, meditate first, then do one thing to move out of that job today. Create a balance sheet of assets and liabilities — what you stand to gain and what you stand to lose. The loss is generally short-term, so long-term benefits become obvious. If you’re in a dead relationship, get help. The same ‘ole same ‘ole is a waste of precious time. Sooner or later, action is required to make things right. Don’t wait. Do it now. Lay your old stories to rest and breathe a lungful of invigorating fresh air. All things are truly possible. Believe it.

Guided meditations can get us started, but as we gain confidence in the process, we are most productive left alone in our own ‘inner rooms’. Close your eyes, place yourself in Divine Presence, and gently release intruding thoughts, one by one. With practice, you will gain more control over negative thoughts, and more peace and clarity with which to swing into new territory.

Slumps are temporary situations and should never be misconstrued as a way of life. We are not meant to waste our days in darkness. Life is a sacrament, and we its offering. What we must leave on its altar is an intentional life of purpose, nothing less.

Begin your new life now.

Nasty Thought Buzzing Around? Trap It, Map It and Zap It Now

Tie your shoes. Drive a car. File taxes. Cook a chicken. Floss. Some skills are so fundamental to being an adult that most everyone picks them up one way or another, whether from family, at school, or even from television shows.

But there’s one skill that can lower your stress, up your resilience, and help you move toward the most important goals in your life — and hardly anyone teaches or learns it. The skill? Managing negative thoughts.

How have we not made this skill a priority? Every single person has thoughts all day, every day, like an endless social media feed in our minds, and many of those thoughts aren’t friendly. Some make you feel sad, some angry. You have guilty, anxious and embarrassed thoughts. You have thoughts of shame, perhaps the most painful of them. These thought-fueled emotions raise your stress levels, keeping you stuck in a difficult cycle of thought-emotion-stress.

If you can recognize and handle these types of thoughts and feelings, you have a much better chance of being happier and healthier. If you don’t have this skill, well, it’s never too late to learn.
Trap It, Map It, Zap It: the answer to negative thoughts

You can’t just snap your fingers and cancel out a thought, but you can become aware of sudden strong emotions and map them back to the underlying thoughts in order to examine whether they are valid or not. Then you’re more likely to zap the stress that resulted and get on with your day. At meQuilibrium, we call this process Trap It, Map It, Zap It. Here’s how it works.

1. Trap the Emotion.

At first, you may not be able to identify the thoughts that trigger your emotion. However, you can probably recognize its symptoms. Is your heart beating faster? Are you weepy for no clear reason? Do you have a hollow feeling in the pit your stomach? Is your mouth dry? When moments like this come along, flag them. Tell yourself, “I’m feeling angry (or anxious or frustrated) right now.” Saying it out loud makes you better able to distance yourself from it.

(Read more on physical symptoms of common negative emotions.)

2. Map the Thought

Once you realize how you’re feeling, tell yourself, “I’m feeling angry (or anxious or frustrated, etc.) right now, so I must be having a thought that’s prompting this emotion.” Again, saying it out loud helps. Where are these feelings coming from? What thoughts flash through your mind? When’s the last time you had this feeling? Once you’ve identified the thought or story behind the feeling, write it down.

(Read more on common negative emotions and the thoughts behind them.)

3. Zap the Thought

Now that you’ve found the thought, test if it’s true. Ask yourself, “Is this thought real, or am I inventing something that’s not really there?” For example, say you’re hit with sadness, and you map the emotion to the thought that your friend didn’t call because she doesn’t like spending time with you. Is that true? If it is, then it may be time to have a talk with your friend. But if not (and this is the case nine times out of 10), you’ll see that it’s a false thought. Once you zap the thought, the emotion will dissipate and go away.

You will have thoughts in your head every waking hour. Learning how to manage them doesn’t just make you feel better in the moment; you gain more control of how you react to the events of your life. It’s like learning how to drive the car of the your mind — now you can go wherever you want to go.

A SCOTSMAN NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR

Vanessa Able wanted a truly independent Indian adventure, but nothing prepared her for the noise, chaos and terror of driving 10,000 km around the subcontinent or for finding the love of her life.
Behind the wheel of a yellow Tata Nano (the world s cheapest car), Vanessa steers the reader through a hilarious, high-octane adventure. Taking any help she can get from loopy spiritual gurus to professional driving instructors, and even a divine insurance policy she drives her way around an alien road network through India s white-knuckle traffic where vehicle size, full-beam lights and roads that simply disappear seem to trump all common sense. Narrowly escaping death by truck, she learnsthe real rules of the road, the vehicle pecking order, what to do when the SH11T hits the fan and to appreciate the true kings of the dusty tarmac: the bullocks.
En route, she falls hopelessly in love with a mathematician named Thor who might be, ironically, the worst driver she s ever met. Their romance does not start promisingly the first rendezvous is interrupted by that universal passion-killer, Delhi belly but will they survive unexpected sheep-jams, a car full of elephant slime, and the endless cacophony of horns?

This Striking Image Flips The Narrative Around Black Women And Police Brutality On Its Head

When 29-year-old artist Markus Prime watched footage of a McKinney, Texas police officer aggressively manhandling a 15-year-old black girl, he was overcome with emotions.

Markus said he felt a rush of anger followed by seeping frustration as he watched the viral video of patrol supervisor Cpl. Eric Casebolt’s blatantly disrespect a teenage girl, whose name is Dajerria Becton. He said watching footage of Casebolt forcing Benton face-down to the ground and sitting on top of her as she cried out for her mother triggered an immediate need to respond. He decided to channel these emotions, use them as fuel and express them through art.

“It struck a nerve,” Markus told The Huffington Post. “This particular incident spoke to me because these things happen every day but this time it happened to a child.

Markus said the officer’s actions were inexcusable, and the narrative around police officers using excessive force against black individuals, specifically black women, is an all-too-common and overlooked concern.

Markus wanted to show what it would look like if a black woman were awarded the kind of respect white men receive.

mckinney artwork

The image shows a white police officer lying face-down on the ground with his hands tied behind him. Meanwhile, a black girl wearing an orange swimsuit stands over him with one leg placed on the officer’s back and her hands triumphantly on her hips.

“The video bothered me and I didn’t want [my response] to be anything complicated,” he said. “I just wanted to make my point in the most simplistic but powerful way possible.”

Though the figures pictured draw parallels to Becton and Casebolt, they are faceless in Markus’ image, which reflects the ongoing harsh treatment of black lives at the hands of the police. The message it sends is symbolic of the entire Black Lives Matter movement, Markus said.

The image captures the scope of #BlackLivesMatter, while putting systemic nuances into sharp focus. With these two characters, Markus hones in on a group that has largely gone overlooked in the national conversation around race and policing: Black women and girls.

Markus explained that the positioning of the players in the drawing are important. “The officer is restrained and under control, that’s the point,” Markus said, explaining that he thinks officers should practice these traits more often. “They’re not supposed to create more chaos.”

Markus said using his artwork to react to real-life events is the sort of thing he doesn’t do too often, mainly because he despises the idea of using his work as a prop to gain more attention. But watching Becton forced face-down to the ground by a police officer was something that he, as an artist, couldn’t ignore.

“I’m behind her, I support her and I hope that there’s some kind of justice and closure for her and her family,” he said.

As an artist, Markus said he simply wants to create — and isn’t too concerned with the praise or recognition he receives. Most of his work is centered around various empowering depictions of black women and reimagining how they’re presented.

“Black women are strong and powerful,” he said. “They’re resilient because they deal with everything a black man deals with, plus some. Personally, it’s an obligation because of what we’re going through as a race, we should put black women at a higher platform.”

And if viewers don’t recognize that message reflected in this image, Markus doesn’t seem to care. He says he’d rather share his work with those who do.

Amy Schumer Admits She Got Awkward And Starstruck Around Kimye

Amy Schumer reminded all of us in April why she deserved a spot on Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list: because of her epic Kimye prank.

Remember when Schumer threw herself onto the red carpet at the Time 100 Gala in front of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian? Of course you do, but here’s a refresher just in case:

amy schumer

On “The Graham Norton Show” on Friday, the host asked Schumer whether or not the prank made West smile. Schumer confirmed that the “All Day” rapper definitely did not break his usual “sad Kanye” face. But she noted that later on, West did sort of smile at Schumer — while she was nervously lying to his wife.

The comedian told Norton that when meeting the couple during the gala itself, she became completely fake. “You know when you’re in front of a celebrity?” Schumer said. “I become such a flake, I was just saying things I don’t mean.”

“‘You and your sisters, they’re just inspiring,’ just nonsense,” the comedian recalled saying to Kardashian.

West, Schumer said, was smiling during that charade, “but as if you programmed a robot to smile.” It definitely wasn’t this kind of Kanye smile.

Blind Pooch Gets Help Moving Around From Two Loving Pups

This dog can count on her furry friends to always have her back.

Kiaya, an Akita from Waterford, Michigan, lost both her eyes by the end of last year due to a battle with glaucoma. But the 10-year-old pooch can still get around fine, all thanks to Cass and Keller — two other dogs who help guide her, functioning much like seeing eye dogs.

“Her brothers are pretty amazing at the way they help to guide her around,” Gwen Sila, the veterinary ophthalmologist who operated on Kiaya, told ABC News. “Each of them will stand on either side of her so she doesn’t bump into anything and lead her around the yard.”

    dogs
From left to right: Cass, Kiaya, and Keller.

The 10-year-old dog began getting assistance from Cass back in 2013 when her left eye was removed, the owner of all three dogs, Jessica VanHusen, said. Cass grew more attached to Kiaya and stayed by her side. After the pooch’s second eye was removed in November of last year, he stepped up his game. He’s become protective of his “sister.”

“Cass always allows Kiaya to get to her food dish first and waits for her to start eating,” VanHusen said, in a press release. “When I take them in the car, he leans against her to keep her steady because she sometimes gets a little off-kilter. He also loves to groom her.”

VanHusen says that Keller, who’s the youngest of the bunch, took a little longer to react to Kiaya’s condition but has become more and more careful and watchful.

Cass and Keller show incredible compassion, and VanHusen hopes that her dogs’ story will show others that caring for a special needs pet can be a beautiful thing.

“They’re an inspiration to everyone,” VanHusen said. “I hope others will see them and realize that a special needs pet deserves a chance. It takes a little effort, but it’s absolutely worth it.”

Sometimes, when an animal is in need, their furry friends step up to lend a helping hand. Tervel, a blind farm dog who is also partially deaf, was afraid to leave the safety of his bed, according to a National Geographic video. But a stray cat named Pudditat grew attached to him and later on began taking on the role of “guide cat,” helping the pooch get around.

“I think Pudditat must’ve realized that Tervel was a bit vulnerable,” the pooch’s owner said in the video. “He just seemed to know that there was a need there, somehow.”

Astors Maiden Cruise around the world 1987-1988

Mauritius in the late 1980?s, unemployment is at its peak and a young girl gets the amazing opportunity to travel leaving behind her bleak job in a textile factory. A whole Mauritian crew of one hundred and fifty is recruited to form the hotel staff of a brand new cruise ship, the Astor which flies the Mauritian flag and is due for a three month maiden voyage from the port of Southampton in England to Genoa in Italy around the South America Coast to Peru and the Caribbean islands. Their difficulty to adapt to European food and misery of seasickness is compensated by the luxury of their new living quarters and fascination seeing so many wonderful places. The cabin stewardesses Mela, Bianca, Nicoleta and other members of the crew tour this great world stunned by the beauty of Norwegian Glaciers and fjords, the greatness of the Amazon River and awed at Jerusalem and the holy land. Souvenirs of unpalatable pizza in Portugal, encounter with rude Spanish horse carriage drivers in Malaga, meeting with a Togolese in Hamburg, a Pakistanis in Montreal are evoked. They befriend Turkish students in Ankara, eat delicious baby octopus salads in the Balearic Islands and dive in cold seas of the Mediterranean and warm lagoons of the Indian Ocean. In French speaking countries they delight in using their familiar Creole with people of Haiti and Jamaica and enjoy the different French accents of Montreal and Quebec in Canada, Casablanca in Morocco, and Dakar in Senegal. They dance in the nightclubs of the world, moving to South American music in Salvador de Bahia and carnival music in Rio de Janeiro, Whitney Houston?s 1987 tube? Oakland’s New Mayor Has Been Driving Around Town In A Giant Burning Man Snail Car

Libby Schaaf may very well be the first mayor of a major American city to ride around town in a flame-shooting Burning Man art car shaped like a giant snail. She notes that she may also be the only mayor of a major American city to have gone to Burning Man.

“To be fair, I went a long, long time ago,” she told The Huffington Post of her visit to the annual celebration of art and creative expression in the Nevada desert. “But the Burning Man community is a complete asset to the larger Oakland community.”

Voters in Oakland, California, elected Schaaf to the Bay Area city’s highest office in November. As part of her victory lap, she drove the snail car, the brainchild of local artist and blacksmith Jon Sarriugarte, through the streets to meet with constituents. On Monday, she drove her husband and two children to her inaugural ceremony downtown in the same mutant vehicle.

    snail 4

Schaaf arrives at her inauguration with her family at Oakland’s Paramount Theater on January 5.

And this Sunday, the snail will be out and about in all its fiery glory at Schaaf’s inaugural festival, which also features a parade of other Burning Man art cars along with fire dancers, musicians and food and drink purveyors — all of whom call Oakland home.

“It’s not your daddy’s inaugural ball,” Schaaf, a lifelong Oakland resident and graduate of the city’s public school system, said with a laugh.

Sarriugarte told HuffPost he’s been a longtime Schaaf supporter, having first met her while she was serving as an Oakland city councilwoman a handful of years ago. He volunteered for several mayoral campaign events, using the snail car as a conversation piece to attract voters.

“We would hold signs out on the street right next to a giant snail car shooting fire out of it,” he said. “I joked that if she won, we should drive her around in it.” Team Schaaf didn’t take it as a joke.

    snail 2

    Schaaf with Sarriugarte.

One of the reasons Sarriugarte is such a fan of the mayor, he said, is because of her pledge to reinforce Oakland’s burgeoning community of artists and “makers.” “We have a wonderful make community,” he said. “I want to see industrial areas set aside for making and producing things … [Schaaf] is really good at taking feedback from the community.”

For her part, Schaaf said she pledges to build programs that foster the growth of local arts institutions, without pursuing developments that grow to be so big they eventually get pushed out. “What makes Oakland Oakland is our diversity and our incredible arts scene,” she said. “Our gritty industrial flavor, as well as our long history of embracing social movements. We are an incredibly creative place.”

Schaaf noted that one of her final initiatives as a councilwoman was to champion a law that requires private developers in Oakland give 1 percent of their project costs to benefit the public arts sector. The money helps create performance arts spaces, galleries and installations. And with nearby San Francisco becoming more unaffordable by the minute, many developers are looking toward Oakland as their next frontier.

    snail 3

Schaaf and her family greet supporters.

But Schaaf says it’s essential not to let new developments squeeze out the existing communities that make her city unique. “I’m very aware that we cannot sell our soul for growth,” she said. “Part of that soul is our artist community. That balance of growth and revitalization but preserving our Oaklandishness — our secret sauce — that’s an acute awareness I bring to this position.”

Sienna Miller Pokes Fun at Herself, Wears Ridiculous Outfit to Walk Around Her Neighborhood

This Vogue video of Sienna Miller poking fun at herself brightened my morning so much (pre-coffee!) that I had to share. I’ve had a style-based crush on Sienna ever since the world was introduced to her, and now I’m also of the opinion that she’s just kind of a hilarious, awesome all-around girl. If you can be so silly and make fun of how whack-a-doo people sometimes wonder if celebs are, you’re clearly pretty amazing.

    sienna-miller-vogue-video

In it, she welcomes the videographer to her “physical space,” talks about loving her daughter while sipping from a mug that says “children are maggots” and takes her two dogs on a walk wearing a fantastic-if-ridiculous outfit of pom-pom-topped baseball cap, bold heels, and two pieces that loudly say her name (an embroidered bomber jacket and personalized Fendi top-handle bag).

Watch and tell me if you loved it as much as I did.

Would You Walk Around NYC In Body Paint Instead of Jeans? This Woman Did

You know those nightmares where everyone’s wearing pants except you? Well, one bold lady in NYC made that her reality—on purpose.

Leah Jung agreed to let the masters of disguise at Body of Art paint a pair of “skinny jeans” on her otherwise bare bottom half. She then took the subway, strolled around a very crowded Times Square, hit up a McDonald’s, and even shopped at a Forever 21 while Model Prankster TV documented the whole thing.

Though the painted-on jeans do look realistic with their strategically placed rips, it’s still pretty amazing that almost no one seems to notice that Jung isn’t actually wearing pants.

Watch it all go down here and ask yourself: Would you notice?

A Play for Our Times: Pia Wilson’s Turning the Glass Around

A remarkable new play, Turning the Glass Around, by Pia Wilson, fearlessly plunges into the ever-morphing conversation about immigration, race and class. Turning the Glass Around evokes images of Death of A Salesman. Wilson creates a nuanced pressure cooker played out when an economic and emotional meltdown befalls a young interracial couple striving towards the American dream. They forge ahead in spite of their difficult financial circumstances and their parents’ cultural expectations of them.

    2014-11-02-IMG_20141030_215051_387.jpg

Daina Lee ( Carmen Gill) is an African-American woman who grew up in wealth and privilege. Much to the chagrin of her parents, she married Korean-American, Philip Lee ( Don Castro ) whose mother (Kristen Hung) doesn’t hesitate to express her harsh feelings about Daina, and about his decision not to marry a good Korean girl. Very soon into the play, Philip loses his job in finance during the recession. His job loss occurs just after his father dies. The sting of this loss is coupled with the fact that Philip is convinced it was a racially motivated firing having to do with the discomfort that the traditional Korean mourning ritual caused others in the office.

Riding the subway to and from endless job interviews, he becomes obsessed with the idea that he has discovered his doppelganger in the form of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed man (Topher Mikels). His descent into this delusion only exacerbates the financial struggle that losing his job already caused in their marriage. Daina stays home all day, becoming increasingly concerned about her husband’s mental health, but also tormented because she can’t ask her parents for help. In Philip’s mind, assistance from her parents will prove that he is incapable of living up to the American dream.

Daina went to the best private schools and hails from a prominent family who clearly never approved of their daughter’s marriage to the son of Korean immigrants. While she is able to talk easily about their differences, he harbors a grudge against his public school education — a reminder of the fact that she “married down.” To make matters worse, Philip’s imaginary “doppelganger,” suddenly arrives at their house, angry and threatening to call the police because, as it turns out, Philip has been spending his days not on a job search, but following this white man around and taking pictures of him on his cell phone.

Philip’s white “doppelganger” meanwhile, takes an interest in Daina and his visits become frequent. Daina herself realizes that she has more in common with this well-bred white country club hedge fund manager than her own husband. Their parents, it turns out, even know each other.

Added to the domestic chaos, Philip’s father appears as an apparition to him (Sam Gold) and forces him to confront his deepest fears and failings directly. In these poignant dream sequences, Philip recognizes that he has an obligation to make the ancestral spirits happy even though he has chosen a path that he knows they cannot understand. The ghost is more of a monster, one who is shaken by all that he sees.

    2014-11-02-IMG_20141030_215826_144.jpg

The brilliance of incorporating such phenomena as ghosts into the story is that it points to the spiritual dimension of the American nightmare (Philip’s mother’s term for the American dream). Ghosts stand in for all that we don’t see and cannot, as mere humans, simply work out and resolve in our blindness. In our contemporary recession-slapped America, many tensions involving differences of all sorts, not just ethnicity, class and race, but also gender, age, religious and educational differences bubble to the surface. This portrait of one such complicated dynamic gives a glimpse into this unique moment in our history.

And as such, I can only say, this is just great theater. You experience life from another point of view and recognize what is happening right now, in the world in which we live. Wilson’s prose is effortless. She writes with grace, empathy and brilliance about what we think of when we say we are American. Kevin Spacey should be very proud of having helped give this play its debut, as the production was supported by his foundation. Having just completed its run at Teatro Círculo in New York, I look forward to the next production of this play, and of course, seeing whatever Pia Wilson comes up with next.

If You’ve Been Rushing Around and Multitasking, Get Ready for the Consequences

    2014-07-29-rushingaround.jpg

Most people think running around as fast as they can trying to get things done, doing multiple things at once, results in more efficiency and productivity. How many people would be surprised to learn that they are actually creating inefficiency and lack of productivity? Impossible? Well, ask yourself how many details you overlook and wrong decisions you make when you’re on turbo speed? Then, ask yourself how much time it takes you to go back and correct all the errors that were made?

The fact is, we accomplish a lot less when we’re in a hurry and dividing our attention between several different things at one time. The reason for this can easily be explained from an energetic point of view. You would naturally assume that the faster you are going, the faster your energy vibration, and therefore, you are attracting the same faster, higher vibration of the things around you. This type of raised vibration is aligned with happiness, peace, joy, and a general ease of flow to life. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth is that our bodies and minds working at a breakneck pace is experienced on a frequency that is very low and slow. This means that we align ourselves with other things that are of a low vibration, like anger, fear, worry, and frustration. When we’re rushing around and not being mindful of our thoughts and actions, we are creating more of what we’re trying to avoid. This is when mistakes happen, decisions are poor, and nothing seems to go right.

Take a moment throughout your day and ask yourself if you feel centered or off-balance. If you feel centered, then you’re calm, in control of your emotions, and aware of everything that’s happening around you, which you are able to handle with efficiency. If you feel off-balance, then you are scattered, stressed, and everything you touch turns into a big mess…one thing goes wrong, then another, then another until you wish you hadn’t gotten out of bed that day!

If you do feel off-balance during the day, here are some ways you can slow down, and therefore, raise your vibration, so that you accomplish much more and experience a peaceful life.

    1) Stop in Your Tracks

Whatever you are frantically doing, no matter what it is, you need to stop immediately. If you don’t, you’re headed down a very slippery slope. Nothing good can come from frantic energy. You are just asking for trouble. Know that whatever it is you are doing will get done when, and if, it is meant to get done. Recognize that you have been thrown off balance and need to collect yourself and get centered before you unwittingly pull in negative circumstances.

    2) Step Out of the Room

If there are people around you, there is a distinct possibility that you are picking up on their energy, which may be carrying with it all kinds of issues that they are having at the moment. So step out of the room in order to break the energy, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine yourself with white light around you like a shield. All you’re doing is creating the intention for yourself of being your own sovereign being of energy and not absorbing it off of others.

    3) Trust Life

Trust and have faith that everything works out the way it is supposed to, and that, you don’t need to control each detail of a situation. Believe me, life will go on and time will pass whether you are in charge or not. Trust that all will happen in its own timing, and you will get where you are going at the perfect moment.

Be sure to remember that when your mind and body are flying around, so to speak, be aware that it’s happening and breathe. Because in that moment, you are choosing your alignment – your point of attraction to all things. Simply taking action to be calm and mindful will attract the perfect solutions and situations to come in for you at the perfect time.

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

Invoking the same spirit that fueled the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, author William Lambers calls for a global school lunch program to fight child hunger. 300 million children suffer from hunger worldwide. School lunch programs fight child hunger and also boost school attendance and performance. This book highlights the use of school lunch programs in Europe following World War II and how they can be used today in countries like Afghanistan, Kenya, Guatemala and Sudan. The future of these nations depends on a nourished and educated youth. Special attention is given to the work of charities such as Food for the Poor, Childslife International and the World Food Program. Supporting the U.S. government McGovern-Dole Food for Education program is seen as key to ensuring every child around the globe can receive a school lunch. McGovern-Dole helps fund the work of the World Food Program, Catholic Relief Services and other organizations that carry out school lunch programs in developing countries.

7 Ways Stress Ruins Your Life and 5 Steps That Start to Turn It Around

We think our problems produce the stress we experience, but it’s actually the reverse. Stress causes most of our troubles — from money, family, and work problems, to physical and mental health issues. In working with private and corporate clients, I’ve found that most people realize that stress is harmful, but few understand it as causal… at least until I review the following research findings with them:

Stress and money: When our mind is preoccupied with fears of financial scarcity, it activates stress reactions, releasing stress hormones that dampen the brain’s executive functions. This leads to a decline in fluid intelligence, which is the “smarts” the higher brain generates to solve money problems. [1]

Stress and bad decisions: The greater the stress, the greater the likelihood you’ll make bad decisions at home and at work. Knee-jerk reactions can cause you to make risky or premature decisions. You’ll drop long-range goals for immediate survival needs, and every day you’ll wonder why you keep falling behind instead of getting ahead. [2]

Stress and declining performance: Stress hormones shrink higher brain networks and break the connections between them. This inhibits you from maximizing your full measure of talent and sustaining peak performance. [3] You’ll have a good day now and then, but your brain won’t be able to generate your best day every day.

Stress and dampened creativity: Your capacity for creative insight and innovation is thwarted by stress. [4] Those sudden “aha” moments of insight, inspiration, and comprehension will be few and far between.

Stress and emotional negativity: Stress locks you into fight, flight, or freeze reactions. Your emotional set point switches to negative, predisposing you to anxiety, anger, aggression, paranoia, and depression. [5]

Stress and family: The greater the stress, the more reactive you’ll be to the normal ups and downs at home. You and your partner will argue, criticize, blame, and withhold affection, not realizing that stress is distorting how you see the relationship. Stress hormones also lower sex drive, adding to the estrangement. [6]

Stress and health: Chronic stress impairs the immune system. It wreaks havoc on the cardiovascular system. It damages chromosomes prematurely aging your body and causing the production of cancer. It kills brain cells, and if left unchecked, can eventually kill you. [7] If you add up all the deaths from stress-related illnesses, you have our No. 1 killer.

Obviously, if you want a healthy, happy and successful life, ending stress belongs at the top of your to-do list. Yet 83 percent of us are doing nothing about it. [8] Too often, the wake-up call comes on the gurney in the emergency room. Make no mistake, stress is life-threatening serious. “It is not something that maybe someday you should do something about,” says Carol Shively of Stanford. “You need to attend to it today.” [9]

    There is a solution

If you have a problem with stress, it’s because genetics and hard knocks have wired you for a hyperactive stress response system. There is a solution to stress that is based on the capacity of the human brain to: a) rewire primitive neural circuits that habituate stress reactions, and b) stimulate the growth of higher brain networks that enable you to succeed fully. The process of rewiring, called neuroplasticity, is surprisingly simple. It’s achieved through a specific shift in mindset. Norman Doige of Columbia University calls neuroplasticity “the single most important change in our understanding of the human brain in 400 years.” [10]

Neuroplasticity works in real life situations, where stress abounds. It’s been studied in high pressure corporations and found to achieve impressive results in increasing morale and productivity in previously unproductive groups. [11] In an independent evaluation of a training my firm conducted at Wells Fargo, more than 300 managers making a similar shift experienced a significant improvement in their level of stress, job performance, creativity, and personal relationships… all in three weeks. [12] Who doesn’t want those outcomes? It starts with making stress a priority.

5 steps that start to turn it around

If you’re one of the 83 percent who are procrastinating, here are five simple neuroplastic steps that can get your mindset moving in the right direction:

1: Bust Stressful-Provoking Thoughts: Be aware all day of stress-provoking thoughts as they occur. Tell yourself: These thoughts are in me, not in reality. Then refuse to believe the stressful thought and see what happens to your experience. An anxious thought not believed doesn’t turn into stress.

2: Stop Worrying (The Clear Button): Imagine there is a button at the center of your palm that, when pushed, signals the brain to stop worrying. Keep pressing the button while you slowly count to three, thinking of each number as a color. As you exhale on the final breath, let your mind go completely and relax into the present moment. Repeat the process until your worries are gone.

3: Start Each Day in Quiet: Set aside five minutes first thing each morning to frame a positive mindset. Feel appreciation for the gift of another day of life. Set your intention to have a rewarding day. Commit yourself to being at peace on the inside, regardless of what happens on the outside.

4: Take Regular Breaks: A 15-20 minute break every two hours allows your brain to rebound. So, every two hours step away from your work and go outside or to a window. Watch the clouds pass, the wind blow, or the sun shine, allowing your mind to grow quiet and to connect with life.

5: Count Your Blessings: Once a week, at bedtime, recall three things that happened during the previous week for which you are grateful. Then acknowledge three things in your life for which you feel blessed.

Jay Shells Posts Famous Rap Quotes Around Los Angeles In Clever Street Art Project

Get excited, California. Because artist Jay Shells has taken to Los Angeles with his clever guerrilla street sign installation, “Rap Quotes.”

New York art blog ANIMAL followed Shells as he cruised along the palm tree-lined streets of the Pacific coast city, placing his bright orange signs along the way. The declarations display quotes from famous hip hop artists like Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Warren G, and Notorious B.I.G., and are appropriately placed in the exact location the lyric calls out.

Take, for example, Warren G’s quote, “So I hooks a left on 2-1 and Lewis, some brothers shooting dice so I said ‘let’s do this,'” which can be seen on the corner of Lewis and 21st. Or Xzibit’s line, “Down La Cienega to bust a left on Venice where you can find me and mine,” which can of course be found on the corner of La Cienega and Venice.

The project aims to celebrate the roots of some of these artists as well as the cities that produce them. Shells previously took “Rap Quotes” to New York City, so we’re anxious to see which locale gets “signed” next. Feel free to speculate in the comments.
