Woolmark Prize Asia Semifinal Winners Named

HONG KONG — It’s certainly intimidating for a young fashion designer to speak in front of a roomful of editors, buyers and industry heavyweights, and doubly so if they cannot speak English. That was predicament facing two of the four winners named at the Woolmark Prize Hong Kong 2018/19 semifinals on Thursday.
But both of the non-English speakers managed to find the words at a dinner at Aberdeen Street Social, where designers Zhi Chen of I-Am-Chen, Mooyeol Lee of Youser, and Yohei Ohno and Angel Chen, each of whom have eponymous labels, were chosen to move on to the next round of the global competition.
“I never expected this, so I’m just surprised now. Thank you so much,” Japanese designer Yohei Ohno told the crowd with a stunned laugh. Earlier in the day, Ohno had conducted interviews accompanied by an interpreter.
Mooyeol Lee, who heads up South Korean label Youser, managed to say: “I never expected this honor, so thank you so much.” Lee had no interpreter, so to speak to the press about his brand he’d come equipped with a written statement in English.
Lee said winning felt like a dream, and his head is already swimming with ideas for the finals, which will

Yohji Yamamoto Receives Design for Asia Lifetime Achievement Award

HONG KONG — “Let me say, I think I’m a good dressmaker, but I’m not a very good talker,” said Yohji Yamomoto.
The Japanese designer was in Hong Kong at the Design for Asia gala dinner Friday night to accept a lifetime achievement award. Dressed in all black, he tipped his signature hat onstage as he collected the accolade, given to a figure who has demonstrated “visionary shaping designs across a variety of fields, and who uses design to educate and promote wider use of design in society.”
Although the 74-year-old designer has been a celebrated figure for many years — best known for his dark and avant-garde tailoring — he shared that the night held extra special meaning for him.
“In my long career, in design, architecture, [I’ve been to] so many parties, this is the very first time that I have such a warm feeling, I really appreciate this. Please let me become your family,” he said.
In 2011, Yamamoto received the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest honor in arts and culture in France, where he has shown his collections since 1981.
The night also honored hotelier Adrian Zecha, the founder of the Aman resorts and a new affordable luxury hotel

Melania Trump Plans Return to the White House After Nonstop, Stylish State Visit Throughout Asia

BEHIND THE SEAMS: On the road since Sunday, First Lady Melania Trump will be heading back to the Beltway after numerous official stops in Asia that has highlighted her international style and original brand of diplomacy.
Following what is expected to be a morning arrival at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, the First Lady plans to participate in a Month of Military celebration. Afterwards, she is expected to return to Washington, D.C., while the President continues his trip to Vietnam and the Philippines in keeping with their plans. Nearly 10 months into the Trump administration, the First Lady has proved to be a goodwill ambassador of sorts especially overseas.
Knowing the inevitable who-is-she-wearing question would punctuate every photo-op, the First Lady gave a lot of thought to each of the 18 pieces she wore with the help of designer and stylist Hervé Pierre. Although he designed the leather pencil skirt she paired with a boldly striped and belted Fendi coat when Air Force One touched down in Tokyo, Pierre pulled together an assortment of designer labels. The former creative director at Carolina Herrera has become a confidante of Trump’s.

Fendi and Coach Get Real, Grittier With Millennials in Asia

HONG KONG — Millennials are growing tired of the luxury of yore and just want to “be real” — that was the message Fendi and Coach sent out this week in Hong Kong as the two fashion houses hosted parties targeted at a younger generation.
On Thursday, Fendi took out the basement of Cosco Tower in Sheung Wan, lighting the space up in a rainbow of neon lights. There was no Champagne here, just strong vodka mixers as a “no-holds-barred” attitude permeated the party. It was the second stop after New York for the “F Is for Fendi” initiative — the dedicated online platform for Millennials the Italian house launched in February — and the event saw a cast of pan-Asian cool kids come out to party: Korean pop star Taeyang, rapper Okasian, music producer Choice 37, Shanghai-based DJ Victor Aime and Japanese designer Alisa Ueno.

The idea of authenticity came up several times in conversation during the night.
“What we try to tell our artists is don’t worry about what other people think or what you think is popular,” Choice 37 said. “Try to find who you are and your identity first.”
Ueno was candid about a slight outfit snafu

Human Development in South Asia 2010-2011

Human Development in South Asia 2010-2011

Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre’s 2010-2011 Report on Food Security in South Asia is a valuable contribution towards the conceptual and empirical analysis of food security in South Asia. It analyses the issues of availability and access to food for all South Asians, especially the poor. Ensuring adequate food at affordable prices to all people at all times is the duty of each government. The high prices of food and fuel and economic crisis of recent years have put half a billion South Asians in poverty, millions of children out of school and into work, and over 300 millions of South Asians malnourished. The Report presents critical analyses of food production, distribution, and access for three South Asian countries, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The Report also assesses food security from the perspectives of women and climate change. The Report critically reviews the public food distribution system and social safety net programmes. The Report argues that to give economic growth a human face, South Asia needs to seriously address the effectiveness of its food security initiatives. The objective of all development programmes must be the people and their wellbeing, and food security is the main lifeline of the people.
