Nana Judy Emerges on Fairfax Avenue as L.A. Comes Into Focus for Brand

LOS ANGELES — Nana Judy is the latest brand to set up shop on Fairfax Avenue, marking the brand’s entry into retail.
The company’s 2,650-square-foot store is next to Tyler the Creator’s Golf Wang shop. The space, which the company will officially ring in on its Oct. 25 grand opening, will also serve a dual purpose as the company’s U.S. headquarters and showroom.
“The brand’s been around for 11 years in Australia and we have a flagship in Melbourne, which does extremely well,” Nana Judy founder Glenn Coleman said of the thinking behind opening a Stateside store now. “We’ve been in the U.S. market for two years and the demand has been a natural progression and it happened organically through our consumers.”
The company’s had its eye on Fairfax Avenue for a few years now, Coleman said, jumping at the chance to sign a lease when space became available.
Coleman pointed to the street’s culture and the existing brands on Fairfax that made it a primary focus for Nana Judy’s first store.
The Fairfax flagship will carry in-store exclusives, including the Oct. 26 launch of a men’s and women’s collaboration with Disney’s “101 Dalmatians.” Disney has been on a tear of late with collaborations marking

Dolls Kill Arrives on Fairfax Avenue With Concept Shop

WELCOME TO FAIRFAX: Dolls Kill founders and husband-and-wife team Shaudi Lynn and Bobby Farahi saw a nice-looking space on Fairfax Avenue and went for it. The two on Saturday celebrate the grand opening of the company’s second store outside of their hometown of San Francisco, where they opened their first store in the Haight District a year ago.
The Los Angeles location, at 415 North Fairfax Avenue, is designed with an industrial nightclub in mind. To that end, the company imported a sound system from Italian custom audio equipment manufacturer Pequod Acoustics and played up the store’s gritty brick walls.
“Unlike the many retail stores that pop up all over L.A. in locations that over and over serve as some sort of clothing venue, our location on Fairfax had never been a storefront before,” said Shaudi Lynn in reference to the space’s past life as a mattress seller.
The store well exceeds the size of the company’s foray into retail with Fairfax totaling 6,000 square feet and dubbed a concept shop. San Francisco totals 1,100 square feet at 1475 Haight Street.
The Fairfax store’s assortment will include limited drops from the company’s proprietary labels Club Exx, Current Mood, Poster Girl, Widow and Sugar Thrillz

Madison Avenue Says ‘Let’s Dance,’ Ballet-style

There will be dancing in the streets and tutus in the windows on Madison Avenue in September.
“American Ballet Theatre on Madison Avenue” will be presented by the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District and the classical ballet company from Sept. 20 to 27, to benefit the American Ballet Theater’s Costume Fund and spur shopper traffic on the city’s most luxurious shopping avenue.
Retailers up and down the street will fill their windows and set up in-store exhibits with ballet costumes and memorabilia from ABT’s  archive covering ABT’s 78-year history of performing in New York. Costumes from classic ballets like “Swan Lake” as well as those from new works will be displayed.
“This really is a way to engage the neighborhood and a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with one of the nation’s great cultural institutions,” Matthew Bauer, president of the Madison Avenue BID, told WWD.

Dior Wraps Avenue Montaigne Flagship in Protest Posters

PARIS — That’s a wrap.
To mark the launch of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s fall collection, inspired by Sixties youth culture, Dior has encased its Paris headquarters at 30 Avenue Montaigne with the colorful collage that served as the backdrop for her ready-to-wear show in February.
Among the torn images, culled from the protest and feminist posters of the May 1968 student uprising in France, are phrases such as “Women Empowerment,” “Youthquake” and “C’est non, non, non et non!” — a slogan that appeared originally on a Miss Dior scarf, but has a particular resonance in the #MeToo era.
“It was a moment of great change, and this is also a moment of big change, so the reference is because in ’68, like now, the young generation sent us a message. We have to listen to them and understand what they are really saying,” said Chiuri, who has championed a feminist agenda since joining the house in 2016.
Also in the patchwork of images is an archival photo showing a woman demonstrating in London in the Sixties brandishing a sign proclaiming “Dior Unfair to Mini Skirts,” an early example of a female consumer expressing dissatisfaction with the status quo, Chiuri noted with amusement.

Gabriela Artigas & Company Opens First Retail Store on Melrose Avenue

Gabriela Artigas & Co., the 10-year-old Los Angeles-based jewelry brand that wholesales in more than 70 brick-and-mortar stores globally, has opened its first retail store at 7970 Melrose Avenue, a stone’s throw from Reformation, G-Star, Adidas Originals, Revolve showroom, Fred Segal and Jonathan Adler.
Influenced by their roots in Mexico City, sisters Gabriela and Tere Artigas, who are designer and director of sales, respectively, founded the line, which ranges from delicately minimalist earrings to bold architectural necklaces and bracelets, in 2008. The company formerly occupied a studio and private showroom space nearby, but when water damage forced them to move, they found the Melrose space and decided to try retail.

“We’ve learned so much about our customer over the last decade that we felt confident enough to present our own space,” said the designer.

J​ack Erwin​, a men’s online footwear brand, will open its first full-service brick-and-mortar store in Manhattan this summer.
The flagship will be located at ​488 Madison Avenue​, between 51st and 52nd Streets, and will carry the brand’s full line of European-made, handcrafted shoes as well as some exclusives.
“Over the past three years, the Tribeca showroom has shown us that many of our customers not only want to try on our shoes for fit and comfort, but also really enjoy seeing the quality of our materials and craftsmanship while engaging with our team in-person,” said co-founder Lane Gerson. “As Jack Erwin grows, it’s important for us to continue nurturing these customers by improving and expanding our retail experience, and with so many new products launching this year, we think now is the perfect time to introduce Jack Erwin Madison.”

Lutwyche Opens Bespoke Shop on Madison Avenue

The British invasion into New York City continues.
Following in the footsteps of Huntsman and Thom Sweeney, two U.K. tailors that recently set up shop in the city, Lutwyche has also entered the fray.
The London-based bespoke maker has opened an appointment-only shop at 717 Madison Avenue, where it will create custom clothing for customers from an upscale location on the third floor.
The brand was founded by Tony Lutwyche in 2000 and currently offers bespoke and made-to-measure clothing as well as a small ready-to-wear collection. The ready-to-wear is carried at several Saks Fifth Avenue stores and Lutwyche also hosts trunk shows at the Saks stores twice a year.
His new 3,000-square-foot shop will not carry the ready-to-wear but will focus exclusively on custom and made-to-measure clothing.
Before starting his business, Lutwyche attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was a major in the cavalry. It was there that he got his first taste for sartorial dressing when he had to buy his officer’s uniforms from Savile Row tailors. “They were reassuringly expensive,” he said, “but the experience was disappointing and the product was great, but musty.”

De Grisogono Marks Madison Avenue Flagship

De Grisogono is raising the curtain on its partnership with DLK founders and former Leviev executives Lisa and David Klein.
The two entities look to match De Grisogono’s flair for color and unconventional designs with the Klein’s expertise in important gemstones, which they honed at Leviev. As such, the two parties have worked together on new designs to be sold internationally. Additionally, the Kleins have spearheaded a new De Grisogono store at 700 Madison Avenue from which they will direct the jeweler’s U.S. business. The boutique officially opened its doors on Monday.
David is to fulfill the role of De Grisogono’s U.S. president, and Lisa its vice president. De Grisogono’s international operations will continue to be run out of Geneva, Switzerland.
In February WWD announced the partnership, which has seen the Kleins’ Leviev business cease operations in order to focus on De Grisogono’s U.S. business development. They have also been hard at work to lend their expertise in stones to De Grisogono creative director Fawaz Gruosi’s designs, which have been known to skew brash and over the top, often through a use of semiprecious stones instead of remarkable gems.

The Tie Bar to Make Madison Avenue Store Permanent

The Tie Bar is putting down permanent stakes in New York.
The Chicago-based men’s accessories brand opened a pop-up shop at 400 Madison Avenue in May that was originally expected to be open for only six months. But the success of the location, which is between 47th and 48th Streets, prompted the brand to make it the company’s first permanent store in the city.
“New York continues to be a rapidly growing market for us, so to maintain a permanent store presence here was a must,” said Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer of The Tie Bar. “Our now family of stores has proven extremely effective for the brand, exposing us to a new regional clientele.”
The brand, which offers neckwear, dress shirts, socks, pocket square, ties bars and other accessories, also has a store in Chicago and recently opened a unit in Boston. Both of those locations also got their start as pop-ups.
According to the company, the brand expects to expand to several other “key markets” in 2018. Specific cities were not disclosed, but a spokesman said The Tie Bar is looking at the East and West Coasts as well as in parts of the South.

EXCLUSIVE: Balenciaga’s Avenue Montaigne Store Opens Sept. 23

INDUSTRIAL CHIC: Balenciaga is to open a boutique Saturday on Avenue Montaigne, transporting the design concept of its minimalist Rue Saint-Honoré store to the tony luxury strip.
The Haussmannian space has been outfitted with industrial touches, such as warehouse conveyor rails, aluminum display tables and slick, gray flooring in resin. Flat benches with thin, khaki-colored velvet cushions contrast with the shell of an old fireplace, original molding and marks from kids who once drew on the walls.
Artwork by American street artist Mark Jenkins is scattered around the store, including the figure of a woman in an oversized, puffy jacket slumped against a smooth, white wall.
With the opening, the brand will count three stores in Paris. The new Avenue Montaigne address, to be Balenciaga’s new Paris flagship, is its second foothold in the golden triangle district, one of the French capital’s most exclusive neighborhoods.
Balenciaga has shuttered its men’s store on Rue de Varenne.
The label has a handful of other locations designed under the eye of its artistic director Demna Gvasalia, including in London and on Madison Avenue in New York.

Eton Revamps Madison Avenue Boutique

Eton is bringing a little taste of Stockholm to Madison Avenue.
The upscale Swedish brand known for its luxury men’s shirts and furnishings, has revamped its boutique at 625 Madison Avenue, between 58th and 59th Streets, and will celebrate the renovation with an event on Thursday during New York Fashion Week.
Hans Davidson, chief executive officer and grandson of Eton’s founders, said the store, which opened at the end of 2010, “was updated with our latest retail concept, originally launched in 2016. This was developed and designed to reflect the breath of the Eton brand; from the Swedish heritage, to craftsmanship and high quality.” But at the end of the day, he added, “the store is the stage for our lead character, the shirt.”
Designed by the British interior design company, Brinkworth, the 450-square-foot unit is patterned after the company’s flagship in Stockholm.
The New York outpost is one of eight that Eton operates worldwide. The others are located in London — one on South Molton Street and the other in Kingsway — three in Sweden, in Stockholm, Malmö and Lund, one at the Copenhagen airport and the most recent, in Frankfurt, Germany. Balenciaga to Open Avenue Montaigne Store

HEAVY METAL: Balenciaga is on a retail roll, with the second store under creative director Demna Gvasalia’s artistic direction set to open in Paris in September.
It marks the brand’s fourth boutique in the capital and second in its so-called golden triangle, which also counts a store on the neighboring Avenue George V that Balenciaga said it plans to keep.
The boutique, located at 57 Avenue Montaigne, will sport the same metal-based industrial concept unveiled at the recently revamped Rue Saint-Honoré flagship in March, based on a clothing warehouse, and is to house Balenciaga’s full men’s and women’s collections.
In the Saint-Honoré store, clothes hang on industrial conveyor rails similar to those in the brand’s production headquarters in Italy. Adding to the factory feel of the space, ceilings are covered in aluminum foil, the changing room walls are made of cast concrete and the utilitarian benches are covered in synthetic leather. Other industrial touches include silicone changing-room curtains and long, aluminum tables for displaying accessories.
The Kering-owned brand, which has 115 stores worldwide, under its new chief executive officer Cédric Charbit recently revved up its management team for merchandising and retail development.

Reem Acra to Hold Bridal Fashion Show at Tiffany Flagship on Fifth Avenue

ACRA’S BRIDAL MARCH: Reem Acra won’t just be using Tiffany & Co.’s Fifth Avenue flagship to debut her spring bridal collections. The designer also plans to create wedding gowns and dresses inspired by Tiffany style and glamour.
While not a brand collaboration, Tiffany first connected with Acra when one of her gowns was featured as part of the Moda Operandi exhibition at the store last fall. Afterward, Acra “shared her affinity for the Tiffany brand,” a Tiffany spokesman said Monday.
Two hundred guests are expected at the April 18 fashion show. But there will be no cobranding or cross-promoting of the 20-style collection beyond the event invitations, the Tiffany spokesman said.
By staging a bridal show at Tiffany, Acra will be following in the footsteps of Carolina Herrera, who held one there in 2009 inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse and other artists. And another bridal powerhouse, Vera Wang, teamed with Tiffany for a runway show at the Audi Fashion Festival in Singapore in 2011. Acra declined comment Monday through a spokesman.

Brioni Opens New York Flagship on Madison Avenue

NEW YORK — Brioni is taking its luxury Italian aesthetic to Madison Avenue here with the opening of a two-level, 5,974-square-foot flagship on 62nd Street.
The store is the second iteration of a David Chipperfield Architects Milan design that launched in Paris in July on Rue Saint-Honoré. But Gianluca Flore, chief executive officer of the Kering-owned Brioni, said the layout of the New York store allows for a fuller expression of the design.
“It’s even nicer than Paris,” he said. “That fact that it is two full floors allows for the concept to express itself in a better way.” The Paris store is also on two levels, but one is below ground.
The New York store, which opens Thursday, replaces a smaller unit on 57th Street that closed on Sunday. The flagship was intended to open in late October, but construction delays, due in part to the fact that the location is a residential building, pushed back the opening date.
The opening of the store comes as Brioni is in the midst of another reboot after a tumultuous 10 months. It parted ways with its then-creative director Brendan Mullane, tapped Justin O’Shea as his successor, and then pushed O’Shea out after six months following pushback from

Manolo Blahnik Books First-ever Personal Appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue

SHOE IN: Manolo Blahnik will make his first-ever personal appearance at a Saks Fifth Avenue store next month. On Sept. 10 the stiletto-maker will appear within his Saks shop-in-shop boutique — located on the retailer’s “10022” shoe floor — for a signing.
From 5 to 7 p.m., shoppers who purchase a new pair of Blahniks can have their shoes signed by the footwear impresario.
Blahnik’s Saks shop-in-shop — his first-ever permanent retail fixture at a Saks store — opened within the retailer’s Manhattan flagship location earlier this month.
“New York is a very important city for me, so seeing this shop coming to life means a lot…It is very exciting to meet new faces and see the usual customers again. I really enjoy communicating with them; it’s always great to hear their experiences and feedback in first person,” Blahnik said of the event.

Saks Fifth Avenue Dedicates Windows to Fern Mallis

SAKS CELEBRATES MALLIS: Saks Fifth Avenue is putting Fern Mallis in the spotlight by dedicating 16 of its streetfront windows — including all of the Fifth Avenue ones — to her new book “Fashion Icons.” Drawing from her “Fashion Icons” conversations at 92Y with the likes of Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs, the Rizzoli-published tome will be stacked up in the displays with select mannequins adorned in designer attire from each of her respective subjects.
