Bodice, Antar-Agni Win Regional Awards for Woolmark Prize

Indian designers won the women’s and men’s wear awards for the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East region of the International Woolmark Prize.
Ruchika Sachdeva, whose label Bodice won the women’s wear award, and Ujjawal Dubey, whose label Antar-Agni won in the men’s wear category, both emphasized wool’s weave and the fabric itself, in their respective collections.
“India has an advantage in that it is such a treasure trove. The handspun merino wool also lends us an abundance of techniques. The tradition of craft available for centuries adds to that,” Sachdeva, who started Bodice six years ago, told WWD.
The nominees for the Indian Subcontinent and Middle East included, for men’s wear Antar-Agni – India; Dhruv Kapoor – India; Theorem – India; Varoin Marwah – Dubai, and Ziggi Men’s Wear – Pakistan. For women’s wear, the nominees were Bodice – India; Hemang Agrawal – India; Matar – Bahrain; Khadija Rahman – Pakistan; Nour Najem – Lebanon; Timi Hayek – Lebanon; Péro – India, and Zonia Anwaar – Pakistan.
While wool has not really been a traditional fabric in India, it has made major inroads into the market in recent years and designers have been working their way past the mental block created by the subcontinent’s

Keith Urban Thanks Wife Nicole Kidman In Sweet CMT Awards Speech

It’s been quite the year for power couple Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. Kidman’s performance in HBO’s “Big Little Lies” was fawned over by critics, while Urban has been praised for his album “Ripcord.”

At the 2017 CMT Music Awards in Nashville on Wednesday night, Urban walked away with four wins, including Video of the Year, Male Video of the Year, Collaborative Video of the Year and Social Superstar. But in his eyes, it’s his wife who keeps it all moving.

During his acceptance speech for Male Video of the Year, the 49-year-old singer thanked Kidman for being alongside him every step of the way, sharing her insight on all his projects.

“I want to say a massive thank you to my wife, Nicole. You have no idea how much of what I do … she’s involved in every little piece of it,” he said, adding as the camera panned to a blushing Kidman, “She hates me saying this, but I want it to be said. She helps me so much making these videos what they are.”

Urban also shouted out to the couple’s daughters, Sunday, 8, and Faith, 6.

“To our little girls at home, Sunny and Fifi, we’re going to bring you next time for sure!”

Kidman has made sure to thank her husband for all the support he gives her, too. Although her role as abused wife Celeste Wright on “Big Little Lies” was tough to play, Urban was there for her every step of the way and encouraged her to get into the mindset of her character.

“He’s an artist, so he knows that the work is the work, and obviously this character is … it’s important in terms of the way in which the storyline plays out,” she told E! News

Kidman also opened up about balancing her career and family with The Hollywood Reporter this week, saying that there’s no way she can take on every project she’s offered if she wants a stable home life.

“I’m now at a point where I have to go, ‘What is that going to cost me? And what is that going to cost the people I love? Do I want to leave now to do this?’ Men have that, but they don’t have it in the same way that we have it,” Kidman explained. “We don’t get the choices as much with our careers and our lives because a lot of it is, we have to be there to take care of everything still. Or I do.”

Well, it’s nice to know her husband appreciates all she does.

The Best, Worst And Wildest Looks At The CFDA Awards

The red carpet is to an awards show as the cocktail hour is to a wedding: It’s the indisputable best part.

So when the annual CFDA Awards honor the designers who make those red carpets possible, needless to say, the arrivals area is nothing short of a fashion spectacle.

This year, the likes of Kenneth Cole, Pat McGrath and Calvin Klein’s Raf Simons were honored inside the event, but our accolades ― for best, worst and wildest looks ― were awarded outside. Janelle Monae maintained her position as resident risk-taker in asymmetrical Christian Siriano, Gabrielle Union knocked it out of the park in Rodarte and Gloria Steinem wore sparkly black Michael Kors bell bottoms.

The Most Outrageous And Amazing Fashion At The 2017 Billboard Music Awards

Much like the Grammys, the Billboard Music Awards are a place for celebrities to wear pretty much whatever they want on the red carpet.

At the 2017 BBMAs on Sunday night, Halsey took that message to heart ― showing up in a bra, a skirt fashioned out of what looked like a trench coat, and heels that laced up all the way to her thighs. Singer Dencia wore what some likened to a Rubik’s Cube, while Celine Dion wowed in a white dress with built-in angel wings.

Cher Makes Us ‘Believe’ At The Billboard Music Awards

The spirit of the late ‘90s was alive and well at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

Shortly after Celine Dion sang her 1997 hit “My Heart Will Go On,” Cher killed it onstage with her 1998 No. 1 song “Believe.” She then turned back time to 1989, performing “If I Could Turn Back Time,” in a similar outfit to the one she wore in her legendary music video filmed aboard the USS Missouri.

Everyone was taken with Cher’s performance, even Dion:

After her two powerhouse performances, Cher was presented with the Icon Award by Gwen Stefani.

“So, I’ve wanted to do what I do since I was 4 years old, and I’ve been doing it for 53 years,” Cher said as the crowd broke out in applause. “That’s not an applause thing. I’m 71 yesterday. And I can do a 5-minute plank. OK? Just saying.”

She continued, “I want to thank my mom. When I was really young my mom said, ‘You’re not going to be the smartest, you’re not going to be the prettiest. You’re not going to be the most talented. But you’re going to be special. And then when I met Sonny [Bono], he said the same thing. And there was really nothing about me that lead anyone [else] to believe that I was going to be special.”

Cher wrapped up her speech by crediting a lot of her success to plain old luck.

“I work with people you might not know, but they are like the greatest people in our industry,” she told the crowd. “And I just have to say I think luck has so much to do with my success. I think it was mostly luck and a little bit of something thrown in.”

The Oscar-nominated actress will also be the leading lady at a dinner hosted by Kering on May 21, as the winner of the 2017 “Women in Motion” award, which is part of the third edition of the group’s program of the same name that is geared at showcasing the contribution of women to the film industry.

Huppert, in turn, has handpicked Palestinian director and scriptwriter Maysaloun Hamoud to receive the young talents award, which comes with funding worth 50,000 euros, or $ 54,710 at current exchange, to go toward her filmmaking projects.

Hugh Jackman’s Logan Costar Dafne Keen Steals the Spotlight During MTV Awards Acceptance Speech

Move over Wolverine, there’s a new mutant in town — and she’s in charge now.

Hugh Jackman got adorably upstaged by his 12-year-old Logan costar Dafne Keen at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night.

When the pair took the stage to accept the award for best duo, Jackman reached for the mic to give his acceptance speech.

“Thank you, thank you. Listen, on behalf of —” Jackman began, before Keen interrupted.

“You do 17 years , I don’t speak for half of the movie, and you get to say the thank-yous? Okay, no,” she said as she grabbed the mic from her costar.

“Tonight I want to thank MTV and mom,” Keen continued. “Happy Mother’s Day in Spain.”

But before she could continue, Keen noticed that Jackman left a very important person off his thank-you list — and she wasn’t afraid to call him out for it.

“You didn’t write your parents here,” she said. “He thanks Mom and Dad.”

The two wrapped up their speech with a joint Wolverine-style growl.

The Best Looks At The MTV Awards Were Definitely The Wildest

There’s nothing better than a red carpet full of risk-takers. Perhaps that why we look forward to an MTV awards show so much.

The network’s always playful events bring out a fun side in our favorite celebs, sometimes to failure and sometimes to major payoff. We saw mostly the latter at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night: Chrissy Metz looked amazing in bold red latex, Taraji P. Henson slithered her way into a backless silver stunner and Cara Delevingne made a strong case for the summer 2017 buzzcut, just to name a few of our faves.

Check out the best looks from the event below.

Jennifer Lopez Knocks Red Carpet Gown Out Of The Park At Billboard Latin Music Awards

Jennifer Lopez hit a few home runs of her own at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Given her romance with Yankees great Alex Rodriguez, we thought a few baseball metaphors might be in order.

It’s fair to say she swung for the fashion fences on the red carpet Thursday at the awards in Miami, wearing a net-like gown that barely covered all the bases.

And it was a hit, People said.

Take a look:

The ensemble got an assist  from Jimmy Choo heels. Her stylists Rob and Mariel told Billboard the fashion choice was “totally unexpected and classic Jen.”

Lopez, 47, didn’t strike out in the Julien Macdonald number that she wore during the ceremony either.

Lopez had a busy night, performing “Mirate” from her upcoming Spanish-language album while accepting the Telemundo Star Award and Social Artist of the Year award.

CFDA Awards Under New Creative Direction

The CFDA Awards will have a new look this year, thanks to a change in the creative teams that will work on the awards. After years of working with Laird + Partners, the CFDA has enlisted The Creative Group, Condé Nast to develop all of the print digital materials surrounding the event, including the invitations and the nominees’ videos.
“It’s always nice to try something different and freshen it up,” said Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA, of the decision to work with The Creative Group over Laird + Partners. “We put out an RP and got a number of proposals and landed on The Creative Group.”
The invitation design, which features quotes from designers — “I don’t design clothes. I design dreams,” Ralph Lauren; “We need leaders,” Public School — in graphic, colorful blocks, will also be distributed as a poster, and will be plastered around the city leading up to the event. “We want the awards to have a sense of playfulness and also New York casualness. The quotes give a voice to designers and the members of the CFDA,” Kolb said.
The printed CFDA Awards journal has been discontinued in favor of a digital portfolio. Portraits

The budding photographer slung a Canon EOS Rebel T3i over his shoulder during the ceremony and reception for an exhibit of his works for sale at Max Mara’s store in the Miami Design District on April 12. The series of self-portraits depicts his coming of age as a cross between introspection and celebration. Themes touch on what defines manliness for his generation and suburbia as a place for a young artist to escape yet call home.
“I couldn’t believe how a 17-year-old could be so tormented,” said Maria Giulia Maramotti, Max Mara’s U.S. retail director, who purchased two photographs after presenting him with the $ 10,000 award. “You just don’t see work that powerful and meaningful outside of a major art gallery. Red Dot Design Awards Attract Record Number of Entries

DESIGN’S SIGN OF APPROVAL: Designers and manufacturers from 54 countries have entered a record number of more than 5,500 product innovations for this year’s Red Dot Awards. This year’s Product Design awards will be doled out on July 3 at Essen’s Aalto-Theater.
Contenders for the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” will be doled out to such firms as Audi, Kartell, Artemide, Hansgrohe, Bora, Electrolux, LG, Canyon Bicycles, Philips, Puma, Niessing, Apple and Bose. Two recurring themes were nature and sustainability in materials and in product design. One example of that was the “biobrush” toothbrush using plastic and packaging based on cellulose made from leftover wood from sustainable forestry. Virtually carbon neutral, the toothbrush was made with paints and plastic that are biodegradable, even its packaging can be composted for a garden. For that reason, the “biobrush” was awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best.
Jurors also noted the continued influx of robotics and new technology on the design process. While industrial robots are already prevalent, other robots are starting to be used for mowing lawns, cleaning windows and vacuuming. PuduBOT, this year’s Red Dot: Best of the Best for “robot technology” took a different approach to help waiters. PuduBOT brings

The Most Outrageous Looks From The iHeartRadio Awards Red Carpet

Talk about “belting it out.”

Halsey’s all-yellow-everything look at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in California on Sunday night was essentially just pants, a jacket and a strategically-placed belt. Thus, it earned our top spot for most outrageous look of the evening.

Miley Cyrus, a mainstay in our wildest looks roundups, surprisingly did not make the cut with the “I love Noah” T-shirt she wore to support her sister at the event.

Noah, on the other hand, landed a spot thanks to a see-through mini dress and unbelievably high platforms, while Katy Perry showed off her new cropped haircut in a surprise jumpsuit.

It was a fun ― if not necessarily the most high-fashion ― red carpet we’ve seen in a long time. Check out more of our picks for most outrageous outfits below.

‘Moonlight’ Sweeps 2017 Independent Spirit Awards

Moonlight” triumphed at the Film Independent Spirit Awards with six wins on Saturday, besting grief drama “Manchester by the Sea” ahead of Sunday’s Oscars ceremony.

”Moonlight,” about a black boy in an impoverished Miami neighborhood as he grapples with his sexuality, was named best feature, the top award. It also won for best director and best screenplay for writer-director Barry Jenkins, and an ensemble cast award.

”This movie exists as a beacon of inclusivity,” Jenkins said.

“Moonlight” will be competing for eight Oscars, including Best Picture.

The Independent Spirit Awards, held on California’s Santa Monica Beach on the day before Hollywood’s glitzy Oscars ceremony, honor the year’s best achievements in independent film made on small budgets.

The last three winners of the Spirit Awards ― “Spotlight”, “Birdman” and “12 Years a Slave” – all went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, the highest honor in the movie industry.

But this year, some of the films getting the most awards buzz, like “La La Land,” “Lion” and “Hidden Figures,” were not eligible for Spirit Awards.

Hosted by comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, Saturday’s show was a light-hearted affair but that didn’t stop stars from taking some jabs at the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Casey Affleck, who won for his lead role as a grieving janitor in “Manchester by the Sea,” used his acceptance speech to say “the policies of this administration are abhorrent and they won’t last.”

French star Isabelle Huppert was named best actress for playing a woman who pursues her rapist in “Elle.”

”I’ve made so many independent films and I think it’s independence that makes art win,” Huppert said.

”O.J.: Made in America,” a look at the 1995 murder trial of former U.S. football star O.J. Simpson, won best documentary over Ava DuVernay’s “13th” and Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro.” All three are also Oscar-nominated.

Other winners included supporting actor Ben Foster for “Hell or High Water,” and Molly Shannon for her supporting role in “Other People.”

Coming-of-age tale “American Honey” went home empty-handed despite getting six nominations.

Grammy Awards 2017: Katy Perry, Chrissy Teigen and Lady Gaga Bring the Heat in These After Party Looks

Every year, the Grammy Awards are known to be the most unexpected and over the top red carpet of the season. And it makes perfect sense considering all of the outlandish, theatrical things these nominees wear on a regular basis as part of their day job being some of the biggest pop stars in the world. After all, where else can you get everything from Oscar-worthy ball gowns, to a man painted entirely gold, and even a woman who appears to have fashioned a dress out of a #MAGA throw blanket. But if you thought the looks on the red carpet were awe-inspiring, just wait until you see what A-listers like Katy Perry, Chrissy Teigen, and Lady Gaga chose to wear out to celebrate this big night in music.

Katy Perry started off the night debuting a brand new look, a full head of bleach blonde hair, which she paired with a Tom Ford dress that was a far cry from her usual moving, light-up, technicolor gowns. Instead, the pop star went from something very understated with a long sleeve champagne colored column dress that was sequins on top and feathers on bottom. After a brief costume change into a white pantsuit for the very political performance of her new single “Chained to the Rhythm,” Perry attended the after party circuit wearing an equally simple, yet sexy, black jumpsuit with a deep scoop neck, faux double breasted blazer buttons, and thigh-high slits up the legs to give an extra flash of skin.

RELATED PHOTOS: Grammys 2017: The Most Bizarre Outfits on the Red Carpet

Chrissy Teigen also attended the ceremony with her husband John Legend wearing an illusion dress with tons ornate crystallized embroidery, tons of straps, and tons of skin-exposing cutouts, all ending in a fringe-laden skirt. To celebrate with all the winners from last night at the GQ party, the Sports Illustrated model changed into something a little more covered-up and casual, wearing a burnt orange Paule Ka long sleeve satin wrap dress, cinched at the waist with a tan and gold belt.

Lady Gaga, on the other hand, we pure rock and roll from start to finish. The pop star was clearly taking her role performing with Metallica deadly seriously, beginning with the moment she arrived on the red carpet with freshly dyed pastel pink hair, pitch black sunglasses, a custom, under-boob baring crop top with spiky sleeves, chain-covered booty shorts, and thigh-high boots with some serious heels. For her performance with the iconic heavy metal band Gaga changed into one of their vintage rock tees and a ripped-up fishnet bodysuit, before making her final change of the evening, channeling Blondie in even more asymmetrical black leather with a glittery silver and blue lightening bolt across the side.

Which of these after party looks was your favorite? Sound off below!

France Awards Human Rights Prize to Copenhagen Summit’s Eva Kruse

COPENHAGEN — The French embassy in Denmark has awarded its Human Rights Prize to Eva Kruse, founder and chief executive officer of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit and former head of Copenhagen Fashion Week, for her work on sustainability in fashion and on promoting better working conditions in garment factories.
Kruse launched the Copenhagen Summit on sustainability in fashion on the margins of the United Nations’ “COP 15” climate change conference in 2009. Since then the biannual conferences have brought together fashion executives, humanitarian organizations, policy-makers and others to discuss ways to mobilize the international fashion industry to become more fair and environmentally sustainable.
In an early-morning reception at the French embassy during Copenhagen Fashion Week, Ambassador François Zimeray joked that the night had been short for many after an evening of fashion parties.
He pointed out that while the joy and frivolity of the fashion industry may seem opposed to the seriousness of human rights issues, both fields dealt with individual dignity and freedom of expressions.
“Wearing fashion says, ‘I am a person, I am an individual and I want to dialogue with the world,’” Zimeray said. “Fashion has to do with the dignity of the person, so it cannot work against the dignity of people [who work in the

Barb From ‘Stranger Things’ Was Unrecognizable At The SAG Awards

If you’re still coming to terms with Barb’s untimely death on “Stranger Things,” this one’s for you.

Actress Shannon Purser looked like a completely different person out of character ― and without a slug hanging out of her mouth ― on the SAG Awards red carpet in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Wearing a custom black off-the-shoulder Christian Siriano gown with a full tulle skirt, Purser added some serious old-Hollywood glamour to the mix. There’s nothing we love more than a redhead with a red lip.

Purser, who called herself just a “small piece” of the phenomenon that is “Stranger Things,” thanked Siriano for the “stunning” dress in an Instagram caption. For his part, the beloved designer seemed downright giddy to dress the iconic character:

Justice for Barb, y’all.

Polanski a ‘shocking’ pick for French awards ceremony host: minister

(FILES) This file photo taken on March 20, 2015 shows French-Polish film director Roman Polanski during a conference at the Paris Book Fair. Polanski will preside over the 42nd Cesar Awards ceremony, on February 24, 2017 in ParisFrance's minister for women's rights said Friday she found it "surprising and shocking" that controversial Franco-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski was chosen to preside over France's equivalent of the Oscars. The award-winning director of "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby" has been wanted in the US for almost four decades for the rape of a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles. The decision to honour him at France's annual Cesars ceremony has infuriated women's groups, with many taking to social media to call for a boycott of the televised show.

5 Kids Dressed Better Than All The Adults At The People’s Choice Awards

At the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles Wednesday night, the kids were our choice. They dressed better than just about every single grownup in attendance.

There was some good in the adult red carpet: Forty-seven-year-old Gwen Stefani was on hand in an adorable Reem Acra two-piece to remind us all she’s aging in reverse. Jennifer Lopez, who is also 47 and somehow appearing more youthful all the time, looked lovely in a gown by the same designer. “This is Us” star Chrissy Metz gets an honorable mention, too, for looking gorgeous in a custom Eloquii gown.

Other than that, though, the looks were a little scattered. We’re not here to name names, but let’s just say that the handful of kids, in their floral gowns and smart suits, looked better than the rest of the red carpet combined (ahem, “Fuller House” cast).

Check out the good, the bad and the adorable below.

Get Ready For A ‘9 To 5’ Reunion At The Screen Actors Guild Awards

Pour yourself a cup of ambition, because this is an ‘80s dream come true: Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton will present Lily Tomlin’s lifetime achievement prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards later this month.

Fonda, Parton and Tomlin starred in the successful 1980 feminist comedy “9 to 5,” playing secretaries who team up to take down their sexist boss. The film has since earned spot No. 74 on the American Film Institute’s list of greatest comedies, and Parton’s title song was nominated for an Oscar and three Grammys. The trio have also remained friends, making regular public appearances together over the years and hinting at a potential on-screen “9 to 5” reunion ― Parton recently floated the possibility of appearing on Fonda and Tomlin’s Netflix series, “Grace and Frankie.”

But now it appears they’ve decided not to wait for casting directors to get their act together. (What a way to make a living!

The SAG Awards air live on TBS and TNT on Jan. 29. In the meantime, you can make your day a little better with these photos celebrating Tomlin, Fonda and Parton’s friendship:

Golden Globes: Hollywood gears up for film and TV awards

SPECIAL DISCOUNT UPDATE:

A Brief History of Superhero Movies at Awards Shows

As we near the Golden Globes on Sunday, there’s a distinct possibility that Deadpool could change the way awards show season has historically treated comic book movies by walking away with a best musical or comedy Globe.

Comic book movies, despite becoming one of the most dependable genres at the box office over the past decade, haven’t fared as well in the scrum of early-year awards shows. But it’s not all bad! While quite a lot of superhero movies have been nominated for the “technical” awards — makeup, sound, visual effects, art direction, etc — they tend not to fare as well when you get into the acting and directing categories. Let’s take a look at their history, below.

(Again, we’re ignoring the technical categories: Almost every Marvel tentpole from the past few years has been nominated in the visual effects category, and most of the superhero films of the ’90s picked up at least nominations for their technical work.)

Superman

Superman picked up a special visual effects Oscar, but its score — by usual Oscar sure-thing John Williams — failed to connect with the Academy and snag the corresponding trophy.

Dick Tracy

The Academy granted Stephen Sondheim a Best Original Song award for his contribution to Dick Tracy. (We’re including it because it was based on a comic strip and includes numerous not-exactly-realistic elements, even if it might not exactly fit the “superhero” mold.)

Men in Black

Did you guys know Men in Black was based on a comic book? From Marvel, no less? While it won a Best Makeup award for the effects from non-CGI makeup wizard Rick Baker, its score, by Danny Elfman (who also created the distinctive theme for Tim Burton’s original Batman movies) was left in the cold.

The Incredibles

It’s not strictly a “comic book movie,” but it’s definitely a superhero movie. And either way, Pixar’s feature film picked up a statuette for Best Animated Feature at its Academy Awards, so that has to count.

The Dark Knight

Aside from being a titanic performance that rivals Anthony Hopkins-as-Hannibal-Lecter in the “most impact made in shortest amount of screen time” category, Heath Ledger’s turn as the Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar (posthumously, sadly) and legitimized the modern era of comic book films. (It also probably paved the way for DC’s current fixation on all things grim, but that’s neither here nor there.) Ledger also won the equivalent Golden Globe for his performance.

Big Hero 6

Also originating from a Marvel comic, Big Hero 6 picked up an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film of the year in 2014.

The Golden Globe Awards air on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

Our Top 3 Favorite Looks At The Critics’ Choice Awards

Ready or not, here comes awards season.

While you sat on the couch in pajamas fighting off the Sunday scaries (just us?), a slew of well-dressed celebs took the blue carpet by storm at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Santa Monica.

Following in last year’s stylish footsteps, attendees looked more fashionable than ever, notching win after win before even stepping inside the venue. Picking favorites was a daunting task, but there were three dresses in particular that really tugged our red carpet-loving heartstrings.

Behold, our three, hands-down favorite looks of the evening:

Jessica Biel in Elie Saab

Any Jessica Biel/Justin Timberlake sighting is a treat, but Biel stole the show with her Elie Saab gown. The flowing, low-cut, long-sleeve dress, which was cinched with a belted waist and paired with perfectly tousled locks, is a home run.

Nicole Kidman in Brandon Maxwell

There’s a reason Brandon Maxwell is beloved by both Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama: His edgy yet elegant designs have best dressed written all over them. Kidman totally knocked it out of the park in this off-the-shoulder cut-out gown that had just the right amount of slit.

Viola Davis in Michael Kors

Can Viola Davis do no wrong? She cannot, and this custom Michael Kors look is further proof. Not only is that shade of turquoise flawless against her skin, but the fit ― a sleeker cut than we’re used to seeing her wear ― is that of a glove. This is perfection.

Check out more great looks from the blue carpet below.

Wieners Rush Red Carpet To Protest Australia’s ‘Sausage Fest’ Film Awards

A group of women filmmakers wearing sausage costumes rushed the red carpet at one of Australia’s most prestigious screen awards to protest a lack of female nominees this year.

Sixteen members of the Women in Film and Television New South Wales chapter chanted “end the sausage party” on the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards red carpet Wednesday, interrupting live broadcastings of the event.

In the SBS World News Facebook Live video below, you can see protesters chanting and handing out flyers about their demonstration. Then one demonstrator yells,“Sausage roll!” That prompts all the protesters to drop to the floor and roll around the carpet.

Protesters shouted out, “Gender roles not sausage rolls!” as security escorted activists off the red carpet, onlookers reported. One video that the Guardian’s Steph Harmon posted to Twitter appears to show a guard aggressively pushing a demonstrator. But WIFT president and sausage party protester Sophie Mathisen said the group was not surprised by the response.

“None of the protestors were significantly roughed up, we were pushed around,” she said in an email to The Huffington Post. “You know, I think that the adrenaline meant that we didn’t really pay too much attention.”

WIFT supports Australia’s entertainment industry adopting a quota system to increase the number of women working in film and television. Research shows that when more women work in roles behind the camera, there is greater gender diversity on screen as well.

“Women are making more content than ever before and this year’s nominations in not only feature films but also television categories are not at all reflective of this fact, a deeply disappointing and shameful situation for a body that proclaims to celebrate the width and breadth of screen excellence,” Mathisen said in a statement.

For those considering staging their own sausage party protests, Mathisen said that WIFT is making the costumes available for loan

“We think that this is a really important stance, something that we hope catches on,” she said. “There is disparity in a number of different industries, not just film industries, so it’s important that we actually start to call out these institutional biases and really raise awareness for them and institute change.”

MLB Institutes Electoral College, Awards World Series To Indians

Read The Political Garbage Chute for all your daily fake news needs.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — In a stunning and highly rare sequence of events, Major League Baseball has stripped the Chicago Cubs of their 2016 World Series championship and awarded it instead to the Cleveland Indians. Citing a desire to “keep the competition within baseball modern and relevant” Commissioner Rob Manfred told the stunned media assembled outside MLB’s headquarters the news.
2016-11-14-1479135702-5133621-20161006_Progressive_Field_before_ALDS_Game_1_between_Cleveland_and_Boston.jpg

“Major League Baseball has always believed that our game should reflect the mood, tenor, and feel of the American way of life,” Manfred told the press, “and so we met the day after the election was held last week and decided to institute an Electoral College system. The results of that system are that the Indians have now officially been declared the winners of the World Series, despite the Cubs having won more games in the seven game series.”

Manfred said MLB’s Electoral College would weigh the size of each team’s media market and “handicap” them based on a number of factors. This way, Manfred said, even though a team may score more runs, or win more games in a series, the winner will be determined in a way that makes people living in smaller, lesser-populated areas feel good about themselves, because that’s more important, obviously, than the actual winner, like, winning or whatever.”

“Look, we instituted instant replay and everyone thought that was going to fundamentally ruin baseball,” Manfred said, “and the Wild Card has been a fantastic addition to the postseason. So what’s the matter with a competitive mechanism that turns the winner into a loser, really?”

Manfred told the press that at this time, MLB plans to only implement the Electoral College in the post season, when games matter most.

“Why doesn’t it make the most sense in the world to have a system in which the person who lost actually won,” Manfred said, “and why shouldn’t that system only apply to the most important contests?”

The Cubs won the World Series the old fashioned way — by winning more games than the Indians — last month. They hadn’t won a championship in over a hundred years prior. Manfred said that MLB will be removing the World Series trophy from Wrigley Field in Chicago and taking it to its “rightful home” in Cleveland sometime in late January.

Victoria and David Beckham Wore Matching Black Tuxedos at British Fashion Awards 2015

While Victoria and David Beckham haven’t always had success with matching outfits (the matching leather duds the duo wore at the 1999 Gucci show aren’t remembered fondly), the couple gave it another go at last night’s British Fashion Awards. Victoria, nominated for the womenswear designer award, wore a tux jacket from her own label. While we would have loved to see that sharp look strut across the stage, sadly she didn’t get to take home a statuette; the honor went to J.W. Anderson.

victoria-beckham-david-beckham-matching-outfits-black-tuxedos

Even if we expect to see Victoria looking posh and pretty perfect all the time, it’s a different story in her home life. We melted over the fact that she greeted a recent interviewer in sweatpants, and David’s copped to preferring his wife casual (ideally in jeans and Adidas sneakers).

Beyond the whole looks-good-in-a-tux thing, come see why David Beckham so rightly deserved People‘s sexiest man label this year.

The Bessie’s: The Dance Community Awards Excellence Among Its Members

2015-10-23-1445611976-4336934-151019_Bessies_Camille_A_Brown_002.jpg

Rarely are dancers celebrated for their work. They almost never break free from an attentive gaze that comes with constant critique and comparison. In the studio, teachers correct every articulation, striving for perfection in the human body. On the stage, critics dissect performers’ motions, searching for error. As unrealistic as Black Swan might have been, the film captured one thing beautifully: dance is a stressful art form, not just tutus and tiaras.

So it’s especially lovely when the dance community can gather together and applaud each other’s efforts. Such is the environment at the Bessie’s, dance’s version of the Academy Awards or the Tony’s. This year, the 31st-annual ceremony took place at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, with its iconic neon-red sign. Bright, plush, velvety décor set the mood, chandeliers cascading to make prisms on the walls. A DJ played music more reminiscent of a club than a cultural event, and the room felt warm, inviting — more than cordial.

2015-10-23-1445612169-2146963-BessiesHosts_CarmelitaTropicana_JockSoto.jpg

Hosts Carmelita Tropicana and Jock Soto. Photo credit: Yi-Chun Wu.

Performance artist Carmelita Tropicana and former New York City Ballet principal Jock Soto made an unlikely pair as hosts. She proved eccentric, a serpentine bodysuit hugging her curves as she told too many sex jokes to count. He harbored all of the professional, stoic rigidity of a male ballet dancer whose discipline and concentration led to a 24-year career with George Balanchine’s ensemble. Still, they managed to get along, informal and improvised.

The presenters were all big names in the industry, from dancers to choreographers to programmers. Kyle Abraham took the podium, as did one of the women who launched him, Ella Baff. Ivy Baldwin delivered especially poignant eulogies for her deceased collaborator, Lawrence Cassella, and Marcelo Gomes stunned in a gorgeous silver suit.

As for the winners, most were respectful, earnest, and timid. Amar Ramasar, who was awarded Outstanding Performer, thanked Peter Martins for believing in a kid from the Bronx in an especially memorable speech. And in David Neumann’s acceptance for Outstanding Production in I Understand Everything Better, he admitted something with which any dancer could empathize: he was humbled, amazed, and… tired.

2015-10-23-1445612080-90583-151019_Bessies_awards_022.jpg

Amar Ramasar accepts his award for Outstanding Performer. Photo credit: Yi-Chun Wu.

For me, the only surprise was that Robert Fairchild did not win Outstanding Performer for An American in Paris. I admit, I’m biased, and always will be biased — ballet is what I most enjoy, and I can grasp it much better than some of the alternative works downtown (though I like those, too, for the challenge). But Fairchild blew me away as Jerry, especially in his final dance scene. His charisma, his finesse, it was all magnificent… a triumph for ballet. The fact that it went unrecognized by the Bessie’s — not only Fairchild’s extraordinary dedication to his part, but also Christopher Wheeldon’s engaging choreography — baffled me.

Another notable absence was any nominee from American Ballet Theatre. This did not shock me; I’ve been following the company since I was a child, when Gomes was the new kid on the block, and I know the company is in a period of transition right now. But the hope is that Kevin McKenzie will nurture a new vanguard of artists and technicians, like Martins has at NYCB in recent years.

The evening’s apex: Steve Paxton called in from Paris to accept the 2015 NY Dance and Performance Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Dance. In a video beforehand, he seemed a little peeved to receive a “lifetime achievement” award; after all, he’s still kicking, still innovating, still creating. But on Skype, he was congenial, offering some off-the-cuff advice: everyone should choreograph something at least once in their life. And if you think about it, we choreograph every day. How we move along the street, how we navigate situations — it’s all choreography, whether physical or psychological.

Like most award shows, the Bessie’s sprinkled in a few performances to rupture the seriousness of the situation. After all, it would be a shame to take up the Apollo stage and not use it. Storyboard P, who won the 2015 Emerging Choreographer Award, liquefied his bones in what seemed a tribute to Michael Jackson. Lisa Nelson improvised a sweet solo with a ribbon at its center. But really the only moment that left an impression was when Camille A. Brown emerged in her white gloves. She’s intoxicating, truly, with the star quality that makes her worth watching. These days, you can’t always believe the hype surrounding a choreographer. Believe the hype about Camille A. Brown.

By 9:30, the show was over. Most people headed to an after-party to dance the night away, sans pirouettes and with alcohol and pizza. Everyone seemed to know everyone else — there were no outsiders, except perhaps me, but I was fine with being an outsider looking in. It was nice to look, to see the friendship and appreciation. I don’t envy artists for their vulnerability to the public, but at the Bessie’s, they mingled among others who understood. Speakers emphasized how hard it is to dance in NYC in the 21st century. But they do it because they love it.

That’s what you could feel at the Apollo: all the love.

How Not to Kill Your Awards Show

David Ahearn is co-founder of Four Day Weekend.

Our comedy group, Four Day Weekend, has had the honor and pleasure of performing at corporate awards banquets for more than a decade. Typically, we were hired to perform after the awards, which meant we were invariably met with a very challenging room. So we were forced to figure out how to take a bit more control of the outcome of the event, and thus our interstitial show was invented.

It’s like the Oscars telecast. We open by interviewing an attendee, transition into an improvised song, and the show is off and running, with the Four Day Weekend hosts handing out the awards.

At various points during the ceremony we take a break from the awards portion of the show to perform one of our comedy routines. The format is a win for everyone, because awardees are honored while the audience is entertained throughout the evening.

Along the way, we’ve discovered some tips, tricks and tools for meeting planners and producers. Here are three:

1. Shrink the Centerpiece

Those large ornamental table decorations look amazing — and also block the action on stage. When the husband’s or wife’s or parent’s or friend’s name is finally announced, that looming feather table piece that looks like a costume Cher wore to the actual Oscars in the 80s might be right in the way.

This creates a giant disconnection with the audience, which makes them ultimately turn to the person sitting next to them and start talking. Soon these amazing table ornaments have single-handedly created apathy for those watching the production. Want to take a picture of your special loved one who is receiving their award after a lifetime of hard work to get to this moment? Not if the NBC Peacock has anything to do with it.

Tip: Keep your centerpieces small and elegant, and allow people to see the production on stage. This is why they came to the event. Consider setting the room for the production and not to make the room look like the most amazing prom night any adult could ever hope for. Let our award winners be the stars and not a headdress Björk would wear for her upcoming concert.

2. Beware the Comedy Moat

When you set up the dance floor in front of the stage you create a huge chasm between your audience and the stage. We like to call this the “comedy moat.” It is the 50-foot space between the people on the stage and the audience that ignores them, because they forgot to bring their opera glasses for the performance. We understand that you want to have the dance floor close to the stage so that at the end of the night when everyone is singing “Sweet Caroline,” our middle-aged dancers can interact with the band. We also know this doesn’t actually happen, and that the minute the band strikes up, the room clears like a Gulf Coast city after a Category 5 Hurricane Warning. That stage looks like Kim Kardashian’s spiritual journal — one empty space after the next. Forget about it.

The awards event, the event that everyone came for, will last between 90 minutes and two hours, and the room gets set to accommodate the 11 people that will dance after that event. Consider moving the stage to the back of the room, and at the end of the awards ceremony have your emcee direct everyone’s attention to the back of the room where the dancing will begin. This way, our closest VIP tables truly will be at the front of the stage and all of the attention of the room will be placed on the most important aspect of the evening: your award winners.

3. Eat First

Nothing, let me repeat, nothing competes with food. Stephen Hawking could take the first step out of his wheelchair in years and if people are eating no one would notice. Nothing kills a performance or an awards banquet more quickly than the clanking of silverware while the VP of sales tries to engage the audience with his/her latest “that’s what she said” joke. (We know you saw “The Office,” Mr./Ms. VP. We all did. And for the record, they were making fun of people who say, “That’s what she said.”)

For all the people at the event who are not receiving an award the highlight is pretty much the free meal and open bar. People are hungry when they arrive. Their teambuilding session took a lot out of them and most of them can’t believe they lost the bike-building contest to the western region. When is the east going to get the respect they deserve?

Let the people coming to the event eat, drink, and impress their co-workers first. Once dinner is out of the way the plus-ones and also-rans will be more inclined to watch the guy who won the award instead of them. (Bitter is better on a full tummy.)

If you pre-set desserts and then have a five-minute Voice of God announcement that the program will soon begin, you can tell your banquet captain to suspend service during the awards ceremony. This will draw the attention of the audience back to the stage where we can now honor all of the awardees and the producers and crew can get back to making fun of the talent with headset chatter. (We know you make fun of us. It’s O.K., we know we are soft and entitled. We can handle it.)

These are just some friendly tips from they guys who take the stage and are out on the frontlines of combat for you. Oh, and one more small note: please try to keep rehearsals to less than an hour. And for the love of God, don’t have a rehearsal to talk about the rehearsal.

Happy Awards Season from Four Day Weekend Comedy!

Gigi Hadid’s Super-Cool Jacket and More Best-Dressed Moments From the MuchMusic Awards 2015

Gigi Hadid‘s hashtagged jacket might have won the best-topper award from last night’s MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, but the model had serious competition for overall first place (including Sarah Hyland looking pretty flawless).

Gigi’s cropped, boxy white jacket offered a little bit of extra coverage on the carpet, but its real job was definitely reminding onlookers who they were gazing at. Wondering if little sister Bella will borrow it soon?

Seen from the front, her sexy crop top and slit skirt, a matched set by Canadian designer Mikhael Kale, were on full display.

Bella Thorne went for all-red, finishing off a long-sleeve Julien Macdonald dress with simple ankle-strap heels from Stuart Weitzman. Her Rauwolf clutch, also done in red, didn’t break the monochrome moment either.

The clean cut and simple styling of this black dress show that Sarah Hyland‘s completely grown-up fashion M.O. is all about minimal glamour. It’s sexy too: Those front panels of her dress were completely cut away at the side, exposing a lot of torso. Rather than a necklace, she wore a white-and-black diamond body chain by Lorraine Schwartz.

Disney star Debby Ryan covered up for an equally chic look. She picked cropped black trousers, a matching blazer, and a classic white button-up, all by Alice + Olivia, for a fashion-forward black-and-white look. Er, not all black—turquoise heels and a red skin clutch provided pops of brilliant color.

When your music is as bubble-gum-cheerful as Carly Rae Jepsen‘s hit singles, it only makes sense that your red carpet game be pretty poppy. The singer wore a bright pink Lumier by Bariano column dress with a geometric neckline, finished by black booties.

An Exclusive Peek Inside This Year’s Tony Awards Gala

Answer: Party at the Plaza Hotel into the wee hours!

Question: This Sunday at the American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards, after the last circular medallion is handed out at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, what happens next?

For the fifth year, the nominees, presenters and other VIPs hightail it to the famous and historic Plaza Hotel for a Tony gala for the ages. “We’re the only event that takes over the entirety of the Plaza Hotel including the Todd English Food Court, the Palm Court and the Terrace Room. That makes it very special,” says Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, which presents the Tony Awards along with the American Theatre Wing.

This year’s theme is Marie Antoinette with shades of pink, flowers and crystal galore. “It’s very Versailles-looking, which certainly matches the decor of the Plaza,” says St. Martin. In fact, the shindig has been in the works for an entire year. As Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing explains, “The Tonys is June 7. On June 8, we begin planning next year’s Tonys.”

The glam Tony gala is a collaboration of 24 different businesses. So what can the partygoers expect at this year’s gala? For a preview of the big night (from 1,800 glasses of champagne to 1,500 pieces of shrimp), click on this story at Parade.com
