Ex-Cavs GM Explains What Caused Friction Between Kyrie Irving, LeBron James

LeBron James has moved on from Cleveland, but his former sidekick beat him to the punch. The Cavaliers lost franchise players in consecutive summers, as the team traded Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics last year before James joined the Los Angeles Lakers at the turn of free agency this offseason. James and Irving both find themselves in great, new situations, but their breakup in Cleveland still has left fans with questions. While the answers to many never will be revealed, former Cavs general manager David Griffin recently shed some light on what might have driven the two superstars apart. “Kyrie and LeBron didn’t have drama as individuals,” said Griffin said on the “Good N’ Plenty w/ Jeff

There is a war brewing between Lonzo Ball and the Lakers

With each leak, the foundation of Lonzo Ball and the Lakers’ relationship seems to weaken. It is no secret that Ball and his ever-volatile father, LaVar, were determined to have him get drafted by the Lakers and build their legacy there. Ball had a respectable rookie season for the Lakers when healthy, but with LeBron James in Los Angeles and in need of another star, Ball’s future there is as precarious as ever. The Lakers have been in talks with the Spurs for the disgruntled Kawhi Leonard, but the Spurs seem more enamored with Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and future draft picks than they do Ball. Any chance of Ball being included in that trade, however, seemed to end when it was reported

Gap Flashes Back Nearly 50 Years, and Decades In Between, for Collection

Ah, memories.
Gap Inc. will launch Archive Reissue — Logo Remix, a collection for men and women that includes T-shirts, sweatshirts and rugby shirts, designed with logos from across the decades of the brand, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019. Logo Remix will be available at gap.com on Jan. 27 and select Gap stores globally beginning Jan. 29.
A limited-edition Logo Remix capsule featuring 30 one-of-a-kind items, made by deconstructing and reworking vintage Gap logo sweatshirts and T-shirts from the brand’s archives, was assembled by hand at Gap’s New York design studio.
A Logo Remix film is populated by a cast of  global talent that’s creating culture on their own terms through music, acting, comedy and activism. “They’re the world’s leading culture remixers,” said Craig Brommers, Gap’s chief marketing officer. “Gap is always one to celebrate and bring culture to the mainstream.”
The group, which includes Awkwafina, Bria Vinaite, Connor Franta, Maya Jama, Metro Boomin, Miles Heizer, Naomi Watanabe, Sabrina Claudio and SZA, will appear in a 30-second version of the film that will air on Sunday during the Grammy Awards.
If the music for the film sounds familiar, it’s Eighties anthem “Hold Me Now,” by the Thompson Twins, remixed by Boomin, who updated the original with his signature 808 beat, making it relevant to today’s hip-hop culture.

Pity China’s ‘bare branches’: unmarried men stuck between tradition and capitalism

Lucy Nicholson/Reuters

Xuan Li, NYU Shanghai

Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is a highlight in Chinese society. But for many young people, the joy of vacation and family reunion is mixed with questions from parents and relatives about their achievements in the past year, including about their relationships.

This is a particularly stressful occasion for single men who – unless they choose to rent a fake partner or have a stroke of luck at the local marriage “market” – are forced to face the miserable fate of singlehood.

These involuntary bachelors, who fail to add fruit to their family tree are often referred to as “bare branches”, or guanggun. And the Chinese state has recently started to worry about the dire demographic trend posed by the growing number of bare branches.

The 2010 national census data suggests that 24.7% Chinese men above the age of 15 have never been married, while 18.5% of women in the same age group remain unwed.

The disparity in marital status between the sexes is particularly large in younger age groups. According to the same data source, 82.44% of Chinese men between 20 and 29 years of age have never been married, which is 15% more than women of the same age. The gap is approximately 6% among those in their 30s and less than 4% for those in their 40s or older.

Hiding in plain sight?

China’s surplus of men is attributed, at least in part, to the family planning policy implemented in the country since 1979. The One Child Policy, coupled with the patriarchal tradition of son preference, has led many families to give up on their daughters. This has happened through gender-selective abortion, infanticide or by giving away girl children.

The bitter fruit of the preference for sons is a female deficit of 20 million people in the coming decades for men of marrying age.

But there is an argument that the sex birth ratio might not be as skewed as all that. It points out that many of the “missing” girls were unregistered at birth in official records. By examining multiple waves of census data, for example, researchers have found that millions of “hidden girls” turned up in later statistics.

That being said, the extreme 118:100 sex birth ratio still points to huge pools of bachelors in China in the decades to come.

What alarms the state is not the singleton status of these men, but their socioeconomic characteristics. China’s wealth is unequally distributed across the population, with particularly huge income gaps between urban and rural populations.

As in most countries, men are expected to be the head and main provider for the family, and women are allowed and encouraged to “marry up” to males with resources. Caught between the patriarchal tradition and the widening social gap, Chinese men on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder have a particularly hard time attracting brides.

The “marriage squeeze” would not be so devastating for these bachelors had the Chinese government been thorough and persistent with its gender equality policy. Gender equality has been written in the constitution since 1954 and has been proudly promoted by the socialist state.

New generations of Chinese women, who now make up 45% of the country’s workforce and are almost on par with their male compatriots in education enrolments, no longer need to be financially dependent on future husbands. They have the potential to shake rigid gender roles that require men to shoulder the economic burden alone.

But the translation from educational attainment to earning power and equal status is not at all straightforward. The labour market in China has become increasingly hostile towards women in recent years and the gender gap in employment rate and income have expanded.

Many young women – especially those without promising career prospects – are looking again to marriage as their once-in-a-lifetime chance for upward social mobility. This is reflected in the increasing dating costs and rocketing “bride wealth” that women request from their male partners, which further disadvantage impoverished men.

Young men – economically disadvantaged and sexually frustrated – might eventually vent their anger through violence against others, thereby threatening public security and social stability. At least, that’s what the Chinese government fears.

The conviction is not ungrounded. Social scientists argue that long-term bachelorhood not only compromises men’s well-being, but also puts hormone-fuelled, underprivileged men at risk of gravitating towards aggression, as already observed in historical China and contemporary India.

Easy targets

Social gaps are so difficult to close that the Chinese authorities are firing at the easier target: women.

Over the years, the Chinese state has tolerated sexist representations of women in high-profile media outlets, put derogatory labels on unmarried women by calling them “leftover” and describing them as “emotional” and “extreme”, and
curtailed women’s rights after divorce.

But little is discussed in official channels about abandoned girls, domestic and international human trafficking, and supporting women in workplaces.

Of course, not all “bare branches” are disadvantaged because of socioeconomic reasons. Homosexuality was formally decriminalised in China as recently as 1997 and removed from the list of mental illness in 2001.

Still excluded from the institution of marriage or any civil union, many Chinese gay men either have to stay legally single or form a sham union – often with lesbians who have the same problem. But some choose to or have had to marry straight women, causing tremendous distress to both parties.

No longer wanting to spend their lives alone or to deceive innocent straight women, Chinese gay men are starting on the long, hard fight for marriage equality. Victory is still a long way away; China abstained from voting on the UN resolution on the rights of LGBT people in 2011. And in June 2016, a Chinese court dismissed a gay couple’s lawsuit for their right to marriage.

Despite the conservative stance of the government and the dominating power of capital, there are signs of progress. In a recent survey on relationship values conducted by Tencent.com, – one of the leading internet companies in China – both male and female respondents listed “individual space” (32.8%) and “real connections” (24.6%) as their top requirements for starting a marriage. Only 9.3% males and 16.6% females put “house and car” as a requirement, suggesting a rejection of the purely materialistic model of marriage.

Similarly, in study on dating attitudes and expectations among Chinese college students, both sexes put “kind”, “loving”, “considerate” as the most desirable qualities in a romantic partner.

If they play nice and work with women to push for gender equality, perhaps there’s hope for the bare branches yet.

Vanity Fair once wrote that comparisons between Michelle Obama and Jacqueline Kennedy were “inevitable,” citing them as “two elegant women, catapulted into the national spotlight by their charismatic, ambitious husbands.”

Americans were captivated by Kennedy and continue to be with Obama for a number of reasons, but you cannot draw similarities between these two women without acknowledging their shared keen sense of style. Whether on a trip to Hawaii or at an inaugural event, both Obama and Kennedy exhibited excellence in dressing the part as first lady.

The Differences Between Living In The Suburbs And The City

Life in a suburb or small town is very different than life in, say, New York City. The ample space and slower pace of the ‘burbs generally make it easier to head outdoors or find your dream home, but you may risk boredom without the hustle and bustle of big-city offerings.

An Unlikely Friendship Between a Pregnant Collegiate and a Gentle Black Man

2016-05-02-1462219184-1511887-dearorph.jpg

Dear Morph*,

It’s been over a year since we met, can you believe that? I can remember it pretty clearly.

I was walking into class, it was The Understanding of Art. I chose it because I’d taken art before, and since this was my first semester at the big state university, I wanted at least one blow-off class.

Stains covered the dingy white floor of the classroom. I would know, because that’s what I was staring at as I entered the mammoth-sized double doors.

I was shy by nature (I bet you never would have guessed!) and the thought of being a part of a classroom of 150 students filled me with a bit of anxiety.

As I entered the threshold, I heard our professor greet the class with a quiet, “Hello.” I was flanking the left side of the classroom, looking towards the empty cluster of seating that I intended to make my temporary residence for the semester.

“HEY TEACHER!” Your voice boomed through the classroom and into the tall, echoing ceiling.

You certainly knew how to make an impression, didn’t you Morph?

It was then that I made a decision. I could stay in a lonely corner by myself all semester, or I could sit with the class clown. The opportunity was just too good to pass up.

I walked up to you, with more boldness than I actually possessed, and asked if I could sit by you. You were a bit surprised, but then gave me a beaming grin and said, “Sure!”

What an odd pair we were, huh?

You, a tall, mid-twenties, black man that smelled of cocoa, and me, a tiny, late teens, white woman with a terrible sense of fashion (especially while sporting a baby bump).

You know the first thing I noticed about you?

Your ring.

I hoped you might be married, like me. I didn’t get the nerve to ask about your ring until later in the semester, but I’m glad I did.

As we began our introductions, I was a bit hesitant. What would you think of me? After all, I was younger and married, which usually left people with a bad impression of me. I soon learned I had nothing to fear.

We spoke like we’d known each other for centuries. In fact, the professor believed us to be old friends, and when we, in unison, informed her that we weren’t, she assumed that we must be married to each other.

What a laugh we had over that! I think some of our classmates still believe that.

Despite the teasing, our friendship was never weird, or awkward. That was such a breath of fresh air.

Do you know how hard it had been for me to make friends, Morph?

I worried of making female acquaintances because, as I ended up learning to be true, many of them were vicious and petulant.

I worried of befriending males because when you are married, that terrain is tricky to maneuver. Of course, barring that, there was also my deep-seated fear of men.

I didn’t have to worry with you, though.

You defended me against those who tried to bully me for being different. You protected my reputation and honor. You helped me when I became sick, even to the point of nearly being vomited on.

I remember when I told you I was pregnant. It wasn’t a happy telling. In fact, I recall the sting of tears threatening the corners of my eyes.

You see, you weren’t the first classmate I told, and to my regret, they were not as receptive to my good news as you were.

I considered stopping at, “It’s been a bad morning…” but you knew something more was going on. I told you about the girls that morning. What they had said, and what they had done.

You were furious.

Then I told you why they had treated me poorly.

Every head in the class turned with curiosity as you squealed with delight. That was certainly not the reaction I had anticipated, Morph. Although you thought I was a little nuts (and let’s face it, I was), you were happy for me and my baby.

After this, I decided it was safe to ask you, “What’s with the ring?” Do you know how overjoyed I was to find out your answer?

2016-05-02-1462221358-9412684-341462_332782336765344_1760284614_o.jpg

“It’s a purity ring.” You smiled as you answered.

Our pasts, at least in one small aspect, were similar. You understood part of the way I grew up, and for that I was thankful.

The weeks flew by, and we had each other’s backs. When you slept in, I took notes for you. When I almost threw up on you, you screamed like a girl… I mean, escorted me safely to the restroom. Each day we chatted until class began, and sometimes after class began.

We passed notes about the absurdity of some of the art (like the urinal turned upside-down) and you never once missed a beat when you noticed that my child’s name was written across every line of the pages of my notebook. We took bets on whether my baby was a boy or a girl. We celebrated every day I didn’t throw up or land in the hospital somehow.

You were the only person I had classes with that supported me in the challenges of pregnancy. When my irrational pregnancy hormones caused a fit of crying, you took it in stride, calmed me down, and we carried on. When I showed up to class in a hot pink tutu, maternity leggings and a t-shirt because of my terrible fashion sense, you laughed and sat down beside me, despite being slightly embarrassed.

When I started feeling my baby kick, we celebrated with gluten-free licorice, and even though it was awful tasting, you ate it with me anyways. When you knew I was discouraged with having to drop a class from being sick with hyperemesis gravidarum, you brought a chocolate bar and surprised me with it. When I let you know I was in the hospital and wouldn’t make it to class that day, you made it your personal mission to go, in person, to all of my professors and let them know.

I remember the day of finals I saw you as I was leaving. You had your headphones in and were watching DragonBall Z with a somber look on your face. I turned around and sat down next to you.

We talked one last time before I disappeared out of the large glass doors and onto the dew covered grass on the campus lawn. I walked to the bus stop and climbed aboard my ride to the parking lot.

As I sat there, gazing out the frosty window that December morning, I knew I’d miss you.

I’ve often wondered, since then, if it’s possible to be supportive of a pregnant woman in college.

Then I remember you.

Thank you, Morph, for being a friend to the outcast.

The Connection Between Honesty and Good Health

2015-08-20-1440095666-4933500-speakingthetruthBrisbaneCityCouncil.jpg

By Susi Amendola

Being truthful in our thoughts, words, and actions can create integrity and harmony in our lives. It provides us with a foundation for connected relationships with others and ourselves. When we are able to speak what we truly feel and believe, we set the foundation for honest and open communication with others.

Being truthful can also be linked to good health. In 2012, Anita Kelly, a psychology professor at the University of Notre Dame, spent 10 weeks tracking the health of 110 adults. “When they told more lies, their health went down,” she has said. “And when they told the truth, it improved.” In fact, she found that people who told three fewer minor lies a week had four fewer mental health complaints and three fewer physical complaints.

Deliver Truth with Compassion

Telling the truth can be very different from simply voicing our opinions and judgments. Yesterday while shopping, I was trying on clothes in the dressing room and I heard the woman next to me saying to her friend, “I’m just going to tell you the truth! That dress looks awful on you! I hate that color and the way it hangs!” The other woman said, “Really? I kind of like it, I feel good in it.” The woman was offering her friend an opinion that didn’t match what her friend was feeling. Opinions connect us to our thinking mind. They are quite often rooted in judgments, where as being truthful requires listening to our hearts. Real truth involves a level of compassion that can trump the negative effects of the brutal honesty we deliver to others in order to be real. Using the truth as a weapon lacks compassion. For our inner truth to emerge we need to hold a place of tenderness as we pay attention to what we are feeling in each moment. This kind of moment-by-moment awareness leads us to what is true.

How Yoga Can Help Us Be More Truthful

Our daily yoga practice gives us the tools to face ourselves with kindness and honesty. On our yoga mat we have the choice to listen to our body or disregard what is being presented to us in every moment. For example, if we start to slide into a seated forward bend and we feel the agonizing pull of the hamstrings, we can retreat, push, or pause. If we retreat, we disengage and that may take the pressure off, but we also might lose some valuable information the posture is offering us about ourselves if we were to stay engaged. If we push through, we are going against the simple truth that our body is telling us (or yelling us) in that moment. We are disregarding the message to reach some sort of outcome or meet some goal we have created for ourselves. If we pause, we can listen more deeply and gather more information. We are inviting a dialogue with our own body.

When we become skilled at pausing and listening we gain a sense of clarity and honesty with ourselves. This kind of honesty goes a long way in teaching us about aligning with our own inner truth. When we step out of what is true for us, we pay a price. If we try to be someone else or something else, or if we try to be somewhere we are not, it’s like trying to swim against the current.

Doing yoga postures daily gives us the opportunity to align ourselves with how we are feeling. In time, we begin to trust ourselves and honor what is right for us. We move, we observe, we explore our edges. We notice our resistance, our sensations, and feelings as we drop into the richness of each moment. It’s there that we meet our authentic self. The more we practice, the more opportunity we have to cultivate a heartfelt connection to ourselves. Being authentic comes from knowing ourselves and honoring what we know to be true for us in any given moment. If we think, speak and act from our truth our lives begin to take shape around the organizing principle of honesty. The truth finds its way from our hearts into the hearts of those around us.

5 Key Differences Between Cheap Jeans and Expensive Jeans

When it comes to jeans people fall into two camps: Those who are perfectly willing to plunk down the big bucks for a pair versus those who would rather go the inexpensive route. This makes perfect sense, because, yes, on a purely surface level you can’t really them apart. But according to Refinery 29, “jeans are also more complicated than they appear.” The site chatted with several jean designers from AG, Big Star Denim, Level 99 Jeans, Nudie Jeans, and other brands and got them to share key indicators between a pair of jeans that costs $ 200 and ones that costs $ 20.

flares-jeans-flares-BFA

Through out their series of interviews, they found that type of cotton, place of manufacturing, treatments of denim, quality of construction, and environmental safeguards are all cost-influencing facts that come into play when creating a quality pair of jeans. Things you may not always see, but have a serious effect on the world Head over to their site for an eye-opening infographic on how cheap jeans are really made.

Between River and Sea

Between River and Sea

Dervla Murphy describes with passionate honesty the experience of her most recent journeys into Israel and Palestine. In cramped Haifa high-rises, in homes in the settlements and in a refugee camp on the West Bank, she talks with whomever she meets, trying to understand them and their attitudes with her customary curiosity, her acute ear and mind, her empathy, her openness to the experience and her moral seriousness. Behind the book lies a desire to communicate the reality of life on the ground, and to puzzle out for herself what might be done to alleviate the suffering of all who wish to share this land and to make peace in the region a possibility. Meeting the wise, the foolish and the frankly deluded, she knits together a picture of the patchwork that constitutes both sides of the divide Hamas and Fatah, rural and urban, refugee, Bedouin nomad, indigenous inhabitant, Black Hebrew, Kabbalist, secular and Orthodox. She keeps an open mind, but her sympathies are clearly with the Palestinians, remorselessly dispossessed of, and cut off from, their lands and frustrated and humiliated on a daily basis. Clinging to hope, she comes to believe that despite its difficulties the only viable future lies in a single democratic state of Israel/Palestine, based on one person, one vote the One-State Solution.

The Biggest (And Best) Difference Between Millennials and My Generation

We’re an enigma, those of us born at the tail end of the ’70s and the start of the ’80s. Some of the “generational” experts lazily glob us on to Generation X, and others just shove us over to the Millennials they love to hate. No one really gets us or knows where we belong.

We’ve been called “Generation Catalano”, “Xennials”, and “The Lucky Ones”, but no name has really stuck for this strange micro-generation that has both a healthy portion of Gen X grunge cynicism, and a dash of the unbridled optimism of Millennials.

A big part of what makes us the square peg in the round hole of named generations is our strange relationship with technology and the Internet. We came of age just as the very essence of communication was experiencing a seismic shift, and it’s given us a unique perspective that’s half analog old school and half digital new school.

You Have Died of Dysentery

If you can distinctly recall the excitement of walking into your weekly computer lab session and seeing a room full of Apple 2Es displaying the start screen of Oregon Trail, you’re a member of this nameless generation, my friend.

We were the first group of kids who grew up with household computers, but still novel enough to elicit confusion and wonder. Gen X individuals were already fully-formed teens or young adults when computers became mainstream, and Millennials can’t even remember a time before computers.

But, when we first placed our sticky little fingers on a primitive Mac, we were elementary school kids whose brains were curious sponges. We learned how to use these impressive machines at a time when average middle class families were just starting to be able to afford to buy their own massive desktops.

This made us the first children to grow up figuring it out, as opposed to having an innate understanding of new technology the way Millennials did, or feeling slightly alienated from it the way Gen X did.

An AOL Adolescence

Did you come home from middle school and head straight to AOL, praying all the time that you’d hear those magic words, “You’ve Got Mail” after waiting for the painfully slow dial-up internet to connect? If so, then yes, you are a member of the Oregon Trail Generation. And you are definitely part of this generation if you hopped in and out of sketchy chat rooms asking others their A/S/L (age/sex/location for the uninitiated).

Precisely at the time that you were becoming obsessed with celebrities, music and the opposite sex, you magically had access to “the Internet,” a thing that few normal people even partially grasped the power of at the time.

We were the first group of high school kids to do research for papers both online and in an old-fashioned card catalogue, which many millennials have never even heard of by the way (I know because I asked my 21-year-old intern and he started stuttering about library cards).

Because we had one foot in the traditional ways of yore and one foot in the digital information age, we appreciate both in a way that other generations don’t. We can quickly turn curmudgeonly in the face of teens who’ve never written a letter, but we’re glued to our smartphones just like they are.

Those born in the late ’70s and early ’80s were the last group to have a childhood devoid of all the technology that makes childhood and adolescence today pretty much the worst thing imaginable. We were the last gasp of a time before sexting, Facebook-shaming and constant communication.

We used pay-phones. We showed up at each other’s houses without warning. We often spoke to our friends’ parents before we got to speak to them. And we had to wait at least an hour to see any photos we’d taken. But for the group of kids just a little younger than us, the whole world changed — and that’s not an exaggeration. In fact, it’s possible that you had a completely different childhood experience than a sibling just five years your junior, which is pretty mind-blowing.

Napster U

Thanks to the evil genius of Sean Parker, most of us were in college in the heyday of Napster and spent many a night using the university’s communal Ethernet to pillage our friends’ music libraries at breakneck speeds. With mouths agape at having downloaded the entire OAR album in under five seconds, we built our music libraries faster than any other dorm-dwelling generation in history.

We were the first to experience the beauty of sharing and downloading mass amounts of music faster than you can say, “Third Eye Blind,” which made the adoption of MP3 players and music streaming apps perfectly natural. Yet, we still distinctly remember buying cassette singles, joining those scam-tastic CD clubs and recording songs onto tapes from the radio. The very nature of buying and listening to music changed completely within the first 20 years of our lives.

A Youth Untouched by Social Media

The importance of going through some of life’s toughest years without the toxic intrusion of social media really can’t be overstated. MySpace was born in 2003 and Facebook became available to all college students in 2004. o if you were born in 1981-1982, for example, you were literally the last graduating class to finish college without social media being part of the experience.

When we get together with our fellow Oregon Trail Generation friends, we frequently discuss how insanely glad we are that we escaped the middle school, high school and college years before social media took over and made an already challenging life stage exponentially more hellish.

We all talked crazy amounts of shit about each other, took pictures of ourselves and our friends doing shockingly inappropriate things and spread rumors like it was our jobs, but we just never had to worry about any of it ending up in a place where everyone and their moms (literally) could see it a hot second after it happened.

But unlike our older Gen X siblings, we were still young and dumb enough to get really into MySpace and Facebook in its first few years, so we understand what it feels like to overshare on social media and stalk a new crush’s page.

Time after time, we late ’70s and early ’80s babies were on the cusp of changes that essentially transformed modern life and, for better or worse, it’s shaped who we are and how we relate to the world.

Jimmy Fallon Explains The Reason For Netflix’s Countdown Between Episodes

Have you ever wondered why Netflix has that countdown between episodes? Well, that worrisome thought will never interrupt your binge-watching again.

While writing his weekly “Thank You Notes,” Jimmy Fallon finally explained the reason for the streaming service’s timer. Apparently, Netflix does it just to mess with us. The company knows we’re going to keep watching, and they want us to know that they know.

For the record, Netflix does give you the option to opt out of automatically playing the next episode. It’s currently available on a number of devices.

But if you haven’t heard, the new season of “House of Cards” is coming out next month, and Netflix has plans to premiere up to 20 new shows or new seasons of original shows a year. So really, why bother?

The Link Between Age Compatibility And Relationship Success

2014-12-27-c6.jpg

Life in the Boomer Lane has written numerous brilliant, profound, and downright side-splitting posts. But no matter how many seriously valuable topics she attempts to cover, from cats who want to kill you to big butts, there are three topics that remain permanently on her Biggest Hits List. They are:

1. The Universal Hot/Crazy Matrix: A Man’s Guide to Women
2. The Myth of older Men Wanting Younger Women
3. The Link Between Physical Attractiveness and Relationship Success

For this reason, she has decided to combine all three into one end-of-year post that will give readers a veritable climax of blog reading: We will discuss information about women that men can use, the older man/younger women dynamic, and what determines relationship success.

Every time she writes a post about older men and younger women, she receives a lot of well-considered responses from men, to the tune of “BLAH BLAH BLAH We don’t care what you write because REAL MEN only want young babes because they are hot and MY GIRLFRIEND/WIFE is 30 years YOUNGER than me and we have a deep and meaningful relationship in which we spend all of our time in bed, while she does acrobatic tricks and I try not to have a heart attack.”

OK, then. So the following is clearly not for you. You may bypass this post and go back to either your perfect relationship or searching for dates on postadolescentmatch.com. LBL will not attempt to prove that men prefer younger women. She concedes that, in a perfect fantasy world, most men probably do prefer younger women. She will, instead, show that actual relationship success is determined by partners being age-compatible.

Now, let’s get to it: A recent study by Emory University polled data compiled from 3000 married and recently divorced couples. Various indices were used to predict relationship success. One of them was the age gap between partners. A one-year discrepancy in a couple’s ages, the study found, makes them 3 percent more likely to divorce (when compared to their same-aged counterparts); a 5-year difference, however, makes them 18 percent more likely to split up. And a 10-year difference makes them 39 percent more likely. Once you enter large-gap territory, the 20-year difference and the 30-year difference, the odds of divorce are huge.

Let us now rephrase this and put it in bold: The wider the age gap of partners, the lower their chances are of relationship success.

Differences in ages also mean differences in life experience and cultural reference points. Generations may be an invention, but they are meaningful nonetheless. With all the strikes against long-lasting marriages nowadays, at least marrying someone age-compatible gives one a better shot at marital longevity. Note to men whose wives are way younger: LBL suspects she already knows what you are going to say. So you can save your energy for other, more fun, activities.

A College Education Might Be The Thing Standing Between You And Marriage

Blame the drop in marriage rates on declining American values, and you may be ignoring what often provides the push for couples to walk down the aisle: education.

That’s what Andrew Cherlin, a Johns Hopkins sociologist, argues in his new book Labor’s Love Lost. Cherlin told The Huffington Post that the move away from marriage has to do with the fact that those without a four-year college education face fewer job options and less financial stability, which causes them to delay marriage or eschew it altogether. A disregard of morals isn’t the culprit here.

And it’s not a subconscious choice: 34 percent of young adults cited financial security as the reason they weren’t currently married, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll.

Young adults with only a high school diploma aren’t earning as much as their parents and grandparents.

Between 1979 and 2007, young male high school graduates saw their real earnings fall by about 30 percent. Unlike their mid-century predecessors, men in this moderately educated group can’t expect to be as financially stable as their parents or grandparents, so they end up putting off marriage or avoiding it completely.

In 2013, marriage rates hit an unprecedented low, bottoming out at 50.3 percent. Compare that to 1950, when 82 percent of non-widowed women between the ages of 18 and 64 were married, and it’s hard to ignore the shift.

Cherlin ties this change to the “slow-motion collapse” of what we used to call the “working class” or “blue collar” family. Forty or 50 years ago, these families took on mid-level jobs that didn’t require higher schooling, so men were able to make enough to support a wife and kids. Many of those jobs have been lost with modern technology. (It’s worth noting that mid-century women weren’t given opportunities to be household breadwinners and often relied on husbands for economic stability.)

Without financial security, couples are taking increasingly complex relationship paths in lieu of marriage.

Nowadays, young men and women without college degrees are facing dimmer job prospects than ever, so they’re avoiding marriage. Without a stable income, it’s not advantageous for either partner — man or woman — to enter into a seemingly permanent union.

“More and more of the moderately educated young adults, those without college degrees, are having kids in living-together relationships, often ending those relationships after a couple of years, starting another one, perhaps having a kid in another relationship and building unstable, complex families,” he said.

Of course, this marriage gap wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t shift our norms since mid-century America. It’s now more acceptable and common for couples to cohabit and have children before marriage. But the big difference between college grads and those without a degree is that cohabiting college grads tend to be more economically stable and make it to the altar before they have children, while the less educated are having children before marriage and then breaking up.

Closing the marriage gap may involve putting more folks without college degrees on the path to stable, mid-level jobs.

It’s this “interaction effect between a changing economy and changing attitudes,” as Cherlin put it, that he argues has led to the marriage gap.

The remedies? Cherlin said that more education is needed — not in the form of four-year college degrees, but vocational education at community colleges that can put young adults on the path to entering the few mid-level jobs that are left. He also said that labor market interventions, like strengthening unions and increasing the minimum wage, might bring the moderately-educated closer to their college graduate counterparts when it comes to marriage.

“As far as I can tell, a college degree is really the closest thing we have to a class boundary in the US,” Cherlin said. “Certainly in terms of family life.”

There’s Only One Real Difference Between Liberals and Conservatives

Your crazy old divorced uncle is a Conservative. Your crazy young divorced aunt is a Liberal.

Liberals are concerned about economic inequality. Conservatives are confident that one day they’ll be rich.

Conservatives vote. Liberals don’t vote, but they urge their fellow like-minded liberals to get involved.

Liberals are honest about the complex issue of race. Conservatives “don’t see color.”

Conservatives don’t want to hear liberal Hollywood celebrities talk about politics. Liberals also don’t want to hear liberal Hollywood celebrities talk about politics.

Conservatives are enamored with conservative Hollywood celebrities who talk about politics. Liberals don’t know who those celebrities are. “You know- Nick Searcy. You’ve seen him. He’s on that show Justified. You know- Justified. It’s on FX. Well, I’m sure you’d know him if you saw him.”

Liberals are pro-choice. Conservatives had an abortion years ago, but now they’ve seen the light and don’t think other people should be allowed to have one.

Conservatives celebrate Christianity. Liberals celebrate Christmas.

Conservatives vote against their own self-interest. Liberals vote in the interest of their own self-loathing.

Liberals support good teachers. Conservatives support eliminating bad teachers.

Conservatives oppose violent Islamic extremism and the homophobic, misogynistic, oppressive ideals that it represents. Liberals oppose Israel.

Liberals, for the most part, support the Democratic Party platform of fair taxation, equal rights, and job creation. Conservatives, for the most part, support the Democratic Party platform of fair taxation, equal rights, and job creation.

Conservatives support free speech. Liberals support free speech unless it’s politically incorrect.

Conservatives watch FOX News for their news. Liberals watch FOX News for laughs. Both Conservatives and Liberals think that CNN is horrible. Nobody watches MSNBC.

Conservatives hate soccer. Liberals love soccer once every four years.

Happy Chaos: From Punky to Parenting and My Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between

Happy Chaos: From Punky to Parenting and My Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between

Enthusiastic, spunky, and positive, Punky Brewster was the quintessential eighties kid. Nearly thirty years later, Soleil Moon Frye-the adorable girl who played her on TV-is all grown up. Now she’s a married mom of two, an entrepreneur who parlayed her successful kids’ clothing line into a partnership with Target, and a social media whiz with millions of followers. Many of the same girls who watched Soleil on television are now grown up with children of their own, too, and they look to her as a go-to source for realistic, in-the-trenches parenting advice, inspiration, and fun. Happy Chaos invites those women into Soleil’s world, and makes them revel in the chaos of their own lives, too. Soleil believes that “happy chaos” is the sign of a family operating at its best-when parents accept that they’ll make mistakes, that there will be messes, tears and skinned knees. She learned to love a jumbled life during her own childhood, when her own mom created an atmosphere that was thoroughly unconventional. Their house in Los Angeles was a haven for many young stars of Soleil’s generation, often far from home and looking for a safe place to hang out. In this book, she shows how her happy but chaotic childhood informed her parenting: Each chapter begins with a telling reminiscence before moving into insightful advice and fun stories about life with her husband and two adorable daughters.

Everything’s here. A modern art lexicon. Figuration. Audubon birds, the texture of tree trunks, the cotton candy wispiness of cumulus clouds. Things hover in an atmospheric space. Abstraction. Some rectangles are diaphanous. Some are opaque. They occlude land- and cityscapes like geometric smudges on a window. Irregular negative spaces blaze with blues, reds, and greens. They flatten the space and emphasize the picture plane. Gravity-compelled paint blobs whose tendrils winnow down the surface. And both. A flower that looks like a Rothko circle. An eclipsed sun that doubles as a Malevich Suprematist sphere. Arrangements of flowers and clouds that look like Fourth of July fireworks.

Drowning Out All Birdsong

A gamut of emotions. They’re joyous. Titles that allude to birdsong, epiphanies, and paradise. Subject matter that features birds that eat and drink. Flowers that reach for the sun, that drape freeway signage. Sinuous vines that cascade like a waterfall. And they’re melancholy. Smog that smothers trees. A pink cross that negates flowers that emerge from a decapitated tree. The suggestion of freeway noise that drowns out birdsong. Individually and from piece to piece, subjects decompose, they regenerate.

Privilege Entails Responsibility

The human condition. Sisyphus? He’s joyless, one side of the existential coin. Adams’ work combines three things. The persistence of Sisyphus. The tranquility of a Buddhist monk. And the unacknowledged rainbow exuberance of a flower vendor. It documents a world that generates and entropies, regenerates and re-entropies. Any one point on the continuum is a worldview, a zeitgeist. They’re but the swing of a pendulum. Adams’ work subsumes them all, Edens, dystopias, and everything in between. It’s pre- and postlapsarian. Those birds that seem so innocent? They aren’t. That sky that seems so blue? It isn’t. The flora that suggests regeneration? It can’t. They’re all better for the experience. It’s a world beset by lassitude, fecklessness, and carelessness. The one thing you don’t see in her work is people. That’s because her work is about the difference between human nature and the human spirit. We are the cause and the effect.

Seconds To Go

Everything’s here. There’s a unity, taut and prescribed. Though the scenarios aren’t utopian, the colors are bright and hopeful. The compositions are stable. They suggest cycles, constant states of affairs. It’s an aesthetic that’s not so much inchoate as un-choate. Beauty is a perpetual state of blossoming.

These are myths, personal, subjective myths, a breviary, a daybook. They sigh with nostalgia and resignation, common sense and poetic rapture. They’re didactic the way a stained glass window is didactic.

And The World Shall Remain Silent

Call them Adams’ Mythology. Each picture, all seven of them, tells a story. It’s the same story, a Joseph Campbell one. It’s not a modern (or postmodern) tale. It’s a timeless one. As Campbell writes, “we are concerned … with problems of symbolism, not of historicity.” It involves a hero, scratch that, a heroine. She leaves home (Separation), endures trials (Initiation), and matures from the trek. It’s the voyage back, the sharing, (Return) that interests us. Her sharing of the wisdom acquired, the lessons learned.

2014-09-10-LISAADAMS_TheMireofEpiphany.jpg
The Mire of Epiphany

This mythology doesn’t just provide emotional ballast. It heralds, time after time, a vivid renewal of life. It’s not about alienation but forgiveness. It’s about the way a personal myth can tap into universal truths of perpetual renewals. She’s managed to step out of the labyrinth of style and contemporary concern. This provides her with a bird’s eye view of the world as it can become, the way it has been, and the way it will continue to alternate between becoming and having-been.

Sandy Says So

It’s not monumental work but it is heroic. It holds fast to the present while it focuses on the future in the face of grin-and-bear-it doldrums. It shows the episodic nature of the world, a given, behind which lies an unchanging essence of I can. And so, Campbell again: “every one of us shares the supreme ordeal – carries the cross of the redeemer – not in the bright moments of his tribe’s great victories, but in the silences of his personal despair.”

How To Tell The Difference Between ‘In Like’ And ‘In Love,’ According To Science

We all know there’s a difference between being “in like” with someone and being “in love,” but it’s often hard to tell how the other person feels about you.

A new study about love and lust, recently published in Psychological Science, discovered how to tell if a person is feeling the romantic, long-term will-you-marry-me kind of love or the more common I-just-want-to-have-sex-with-you sexual lust.

It turns out, the answer lies in how they look at you.

Researchers from the University of Chicago conducted two studies on a group of heterosexual undergrads. In the first study, participants looked at a set of 120 photographs of couples and were asked if the photos elicited feelings of romantic love or sexual desire. Sexual desire was defined as an increase in sexual thoughts and fantasies toward a target, whereas love was defined as a sentimental and tender state that made participants long for a union.

Afterwards, the participants were shown the same photographs and asked simply to look at them and think about their feelings. While students were gazing at the photographs, their eye movements were tracked and recorded to determine where on the photo they fixated most and for how long.

In the second study, participants were given 80 photographs of individuals of the opposite sex and asked if they could possibly feel love toward or lust toward them. Again, their eye movements were tracked.

At the end of both studies, the results were pretty clear: “Subjects were more likely to fixate on the face when making decisions about romantic love,” the researchers wrote. “Judgments that involved lust elicited more eye fixations toward the body.”

Indeed, as the authors point out, “Mutual eye gaze is one of the most reliable markers of love between couples.”

So if your S.O. spends more time looking at your face than looking at your butt, odds are good that he or she is in it for the long haul.

Pope vs. Pope: World Cup Final Between Argentina And Germany Pits Francis Against Benedict XVI

The FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Germany could herald a rift in the Catholic church, pitting Argentine-born Pope Francis against German Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis has almost surely been secretly rooting for Argentina, despite his pledge to keep his prayers neutral.

But Germany’s unbelievable 7-1 rout of Brazil during yesterday’s semi-final could make for an awkward final match for the Vatican’s holiest football fans.

When Francis first met Benedict XVI in person after his election, he declared, “we are brothers,” but family feuds have started over less.

Francis earlier joked of a “war” between him and his protectors, The Swiss Guards, during the Argentina-Switzerland match. But could we now see a holy war between two Popes?

No word from the Vatican as of press time, but fans are already speculating. The jury’s out on Jesus, however.

What’s the Connection Between Memorial Day and Radio Countdowns?

If we know nothing else, we know Americans love lists. We love to rank football teams, rock albums, cars, pizzerias, movies, former girlfriends, and anything else of which there’s three or more.

Why?

Because we Americans understand — more so than any other culture — that some things have to be better than others. And once teased, we must know the better from the other. That’s why, every Memorial Day, we celebrate not just by hosting barbecues and honoring fallen soldiers, but by obsessively listening to radio countdowns.

Now I can rationalize a connection between between fallen soldiers and family barbecues… I think. Something about patriotism, and perhaps open fire.

But the connection between honoring soldiers and knowing if Iggy Azalea landed at No. 3 or No. 6? Not so much. We just love lists.

A few years back, one of my local radio stations naturally decided to count down “The Top 1001 Songs!” Their description provided no historical or genre limitations — just “as voted by you.” Without any other qualification, it simply existed as THE TOP 1001 SONGS OF ALL TIME. A high bar, to be sure.

This was their Top 5 (because, as an American, you now must know):

No: 5: “Get Down Tonight” by K.C. and the Sunshine Band
No: 4: “Hey Jude” by The Beatles
No: 3: “Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones
No: 2: “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey
No: 1: “Rag Doll” by the Four Seasons

“Rag Doll”? “RAG DOLL”?

Number 1,000 was REO Speedwagon’s “Keep on Loving You.” Why you voted to put 998 songs between REO Speedwagon’s greatest hit and Journey’s greatest hit is beyond me, but such is the mysterious allure of the radio countdown.

Of course, a real “Top 1001 of All Time” would be a very random list. But given it’s Memorial Day, I must do my patriotic duty. So below, I present my version of the Top 10 of all time (influenced heavily by my dislike of both country music and Elvis, my brother Paul’s fourth grade piano recital, and the fact that I’ve been tuning out most of this year).

No. 10: “Gangnam Style” by PSY
No. 9: “Respect” by Aretha Franklin
No. 8: (tie) “Hungarian Rhapsody” by both Queen & Franz Liszt
No. 7: “Fur Elise” by Beethoven (and played to small-fingered perfection by Paul)
No. 6: “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie
No. 5: “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”
No. 4: “Colored Lines” by Robin Thicke
No. 3: “Yesterday” by The Beatles
No. 2: Gregorian Chants (particularly 1-4903, 5542, and 5553)
No. 1: (tie) “Happy Birthday to You” and “Stairway to Heaven,” the latter by Led Zeppelin

See? Like a true American, you read all the way to the end, despite the fact that you don’t really give a crap.

But if you did stop before you got to No. 1, you’re a stronger person than me. Or maybe Canadian.

DJ is David McLean’s eldest grandson, so it stands to reason that he be the one to scatter his beloved grandfather’s ashes. At least that’s how DJ sees it. He’s always been the best at everything–sports, school, looking after his fatherless family–so climbing Kilimanjaro is just another thing he’ll accomplish almost effortlessly. Or so he thinks, until he arrives in Tanzania and everything starts to go wrong. He’s detained at immigration, he gets robbed, his climbing group includes an old lady and he gets stuck with the first ever female porter. Forced to go polepole (slowly), DJ finds out the hard way that youth, fitness level and drive have nothing to do with success on the mountain–or in life.

This Guy Wants To Outlaw Oral Sex Between Teenagers In Virginia

Virginia lawmakers sure are obsessed with oral sex!

Just months after the Supreme Court declined Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s attempts to reinstate Virginia’s anti-sodomy law, which had been struck down as unconstitutional, the legislature is out to regulate Old Dominion bedrooms once again.

Only this time, the state is limiting its reach — to teenagers. (Also, to adults who have certain kinds of sex in public and those who hang out with prostitutes.)

Recall, Virginia’s bizarre “crimes against nature” law made it a felony for any person to carnally know “any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth”; anyone who “voluntarily submits” to that sort of activity would also be a felon.

The United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit found in March of last year that this law was a violation of the 14th Amendment.

According to an “impact statement” accompanying this new bill, limiting the proscriptions to non-adults is an attempt to get around these due process problems.

Here’s the official summary of the SB 14, which was introduced by Republican Senator Thomas Garrett, who ran for office as a “Cuccinelli conservative” and vowed to go farther to the right than any other candidate:

Crimes against nature. Clarifies that engaging in consensual sodomy is not a crime if all persons participating are adults, are not in a public place, and are not committing, attempting to commit, conspiring to commit, aiding, or abetting any act in furtherance of prostitution. The bill states that an emergency exists and it is in force from its passage.

The full text of the bill makes clear that the “crimes against nature” statute that makes consensual sodomy a felony is reinstated, except against adults who are enjoying themselves in private:

A. If any Any person who (i) carnally knows in any manner any brute animal, or (ii) carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, he or she shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony, except as provided in subsection B. The provisions of clause (ii) shall not apply where all persons are consenting adults who are not in a public place and who are not committing, attempting to commit, conspiring to commit, aiding, or abetting any act in furtherance of prostitution.

Think Progress, which reported about the bill on Wednesday, notes that Virginia law allows heterosexual 16-year-olds to marry; they can get hitched even younger if there’s a pregnancy.

UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh points out some other sticky inconsistencies:

Well, Virginia law provides that genital sex with a 15-to-17-year-old is a misdemeanor, and sex among 15-to-17-year-olds is perfectly legal. So if two 17-year-olds are choosing whether to have oral sex or genital sex, the law would push them towards the form of sex that is more likely to transmit disease, and more likely to cause unwanted pregnancy. Genius.

The publication also spoke with lawyers who were unimpressed with this new bill.

Claire Guthrie Gastañaga, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, told Think Progress she believes the bill still discriminates against same-sex couples and as such would be deemed unconstitutional, and that her group would “oppose it, unequivocally, because it leaves in place discriminatory treatment and doesn’t address the underlying problem that LGBT people are treated differently than folks that have other kinds of sex.”

University of Florida law professor Darren Hutchinson told HuffPost he agrees that the state can’t say that teens can’t have sodomy while not outlawing other kinds of sex.

“Virginia cannot make distinctions among LGBT teens and heterosexual teens with respect to the criminal law. Unless all forms of teen sexuality are illegal in Virginia, this bill would violate Equal Protection,” he said. “The state seems to have invented an ’emergency’ to justify immediate application of the law — but this looks exceedingly deceptive in light of the antigay history of Virginia law and the recent unlawful enforcement of the state sodomy law, which remains on the books ten years after the Supreme Court protection of a right to engage in sodomy.”

But if attorneys can say they don’t see a law like this holding up, they can’t tell us why a politician see the need, sincerely urgent or otherwise, for the bill in the first place. For that we’ve reached out to Garrett, and will update this piece with any response.

Meantime, here are some other causes that have occupied the time and docket of this state senator since taking office in 2012:

Allowing persons convicted of violent crimes to become tow truck drivers;

Making it lawful to hunt and/or kill coyotes on Sundays;

Prohibiting the state from funding abortions from low-income women “in cases in which a physician certifies that he believes that the fetus would be born with a gross and totally incapacitating physical deformity or mental deficiency”;

OK, OK, it’s hard to hate this one: Celebrating the life of a Virginia K-9 named Maggie, who solved her first case when she was nine months old and died in 2011, due to injuries incurred in the line of duty.

maggie

Still, we’d really like to know what makes this teen sodomy bill so urgent. And there’s no one else we can ask just yet, since Garrett, according to the Senate’s website, is thus far the bill’s only patron.

Interface Oral Health Science 2007: Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium for Interface Oral Health Science, Held in Sendai, Japan, Between 18 and 19 February 2007

The Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry has proposed Interface Oral Health Science as the main theme of next-generation dental research since 2002. That theme is based on the new concept that healthy oral function is provided by biological and biomechanical harmony among three systems: oral tissues, parasites, and biomaterials, and that oral diseases are interpreted as “interface diseases” caused by disruption of the intact interfaces among those systems. The Second International Symposium was organized to promote advances in dental research and to activate interdisciplinary research with related fields by putting interface oral health science into practice. Researchers at the global forefront of the field participated in the symposium, the contents of which are summarized in this book. Also included are the text of a lecture by the president of Tohoku University, an educational lecture by the vice-dean of King’s College London Dental Institute, the contents of three symposia and more than 70 poster presentations.

Between Two Worlds

Between Two Worlds

On the treeless shores of Itta, Greenland, as far north as humans can settle, sixteen-year-old Inuit Billy Bah spots a ship far out among the icebergs on the bay–a sight both welcome and feared. Explorers have already left their indelible mark on her land and its people, and a ship full of white men can mean trouble. The ship carries provisions for Robert E. Peary, who is making an expidition to the North Pole. As a child, Billy Bah spent a year in America with Peary’s family. When her parents went to America years later, they died in a tragic scandal. Now, Peary’s wife, daughter, and crew are in Itta to bring him supplies. Winter comes on fast, and when the ship gets caught in the ice, Billy Bah sets out to find Peary. The journey will imperil her life, and that of the man she loves. By turns lyrical and gripping, “Between Two Worlds” is an impassioned coming-of-age novel set in a land of breathtaking beauty and danger, where nature and love are powerful and unpredictable forces.
