“Who can make a statement better than Oprah? This whole world we live in is a dream. And you came to honor me, and I am honoring you because I know most of the people who are in this room and those who I don’t know I am going to know. And I am very thrilled that you are here, I am very thrilled to know you, I’m thrilled about my life, my wife and my family have carried through with me and helped me through all these years. I’m not so glamorous at home, you know. I walk around with a ripped robe — and now towel — but I think I’ve been very lucky to have a family, to have a company that has great people in it. I’m not the one who did all of this; it’s a team. And I don’t say that with anything but truthfully. I have a wonderful team and I like working, I like working with people in my company, I like working with you. Steven [Spielberg], we haven’t worked together, but we’re going to do a movie, right? How Bravado Is Extending Music Merch Beyond T-shirts

Bravado has managed to elevate music merchandise and that was always the goal for Mat Vlasic, the company’s chief executive officer who grew up in the music business — his mother, Marsha Vlasic, was — and still is — a rock agent.
For Vlasic, the turning point was when Barneys said yes to Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour collection, which drew a wide swath of fans, but Vlasic still sees a lot of untapped opportunities within the music merchandise space. He spoke to WWD’s editorial director James Fallon on how he matches designers with musical artists, who is buying the most music merchandise and what prevents them from working with larger brands and retailers.
WWD: What is Bravado?
Mat Vlasic: We do a lot of things, but we look at ourselves as a brand management company for artists. Most of our clients are musicians and we provide them an infrastructure to sell T-shirts, expand into fashion, home decor and other categories where they can extend their brand beyond music. It’s particularly important now as music has migrated to digital and you don’t have a lot of physical touch points anymore. So we spend our day thinking about how can we connect artists deeper to

Shepard Fairey, Takashi Murakami, Jenny Holzer, KC Ortiz and Others Offer Street Art for This Spring’s ‘Beyond The Streets’

THE GREAT INDOORS: In May, the global movement of graffiti and street art will be in focus in “Beyond The Streets” a three-month museum like experience in Los Angeles.
Orchestrated by curator-collector-consultant Roger Gastman, the ticketed event, which opens to the public May 6, will examine mark making and rule breaking. Gastman knows a good deal about both, having caused a ruckus last week by rallying artists to boycott H&M after the Swedish chain challenged copyright protection of street art with a lawsuit in a federal court in New York. Within 24 hours of his Instagram call-to-action, the fast fashion retailer withdrew its legal complaint and pledged its support to artists.
The ties between graffiti and fashion remain strong. Balenciaga’s fall runway featured a graffiti-covered mountain, Christopher Bailey’s final Burberry collection included neon graffiti looks and Coach hooked up with the Keith Haring Foundation for a collaboration. The latter also enlisted street artists such as Crash, SUCH, WhIsBe and Tats Cru to create 13 murals for an outdoor project. Gastman said, “Fashion is constantly looking at the streets to see what the new cultures are, what the kids are clamoring towards, who has more followers now on social media and who are

Grailed Extends Beyond Secondhand Shopping

“I see too many tweets about kids getting their phone taken away because they are using Grailed,” said Arun Gupta, a lanky 29-year-old who speaks as if he’s being timed for speed.
Gupta, who studied physics at Yale, is the chief executive officer and cofounder of Grailed, the men’s resale site that launched in 2014.
Last week, Grailed’s Twitter mentions were particularly pointed. The e-commerce site released an update to its iPhone mobile app and there were a few glitches. Users were upset about a missing “back” and “done” button, the inability to add pictures to a listing and not being able to send messages to other users.
App glitches that prevent customers from purchasing or selling product are a problem, but the mentions, which ranged from obnoxious to highly concerned, were indicative of Grailed’s connection to its user, who is typically male, between ages 17 and 35 and has a penchant for streetwear and high-end designers. The site isn’t as omnipresent as, say, Instagram, but it’s quickly become a resource and daily attraction for a demographic that most retailers and brands are trying to win over.

Stephen Colbert Is Beyond Happy That Donald Trump Is Out Of The Country

With Trump away on a nine-day jaunt to the Middle East and Western Europe, Colbert said it meant “we have the whole country to ourselves for the weekend.”

The host went on to dissect just some of the challenges Trump may face on his trip, during which he is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican, and attend a G7 meeting in Sicily and a NATO summit in Belgium.

Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond

Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond

In May of 1963 Seattle mountaineer Jim Whittaker stepped into world history by becoming the first American to summit Mount Everest. Fifty years later, he is still regarded as a seminal figure in North American mountaineering, as well as an astute businessman who helped create the outdoor recreation industry. A Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond is Jim’s courageous, no-punches-pulled autobiography and a look at a peripatetic, sometimes difficult life. Beyond the glory of the Everest summit and his other extraordinary climbing feats, including the first American summit of K2, he openly describes his personal, everyman experience of social upheaval in the 1960s and 70s, an early divorce, family strife, a passionate new love later in life, and business triumphs and losses. Jim tells it all with verve and honesty and, true to his nature, turns every setback into the stage for new adventure. This special 50th anniversary edition celebrates the story of Jim’s life and features a new foreword by Ed Viesturs, as well as a new final chapter that brings readers up-to-date, including details of his trek to Everest Base Camp in 2012 and his son Leif’s recent successful summits of Everest.

Hairdresser Goes Above And Beyond For Young Customer With Autism

A West Virginia mom’s viral Facebook post is demonstrating the power of empathy when it comes to kids with special needs.

On Dec. 29, Jennifer McCafferty posted a photo that shows her 4-year-old son Isaiah having his hair cut while sitting on the floor of a Sport Clips salon in Charleston. In the caption, the mom explained that Isaiah has autism, so this hairdresser’s kindness meant a great deal to their family.

“This woman, Kaylen, … did more for my heart than she will probably ever realize,” McCafferty wrote. “Haircuts with Isaiah are no small feat. He hates having anything near his ears, the sound of clippers sends him in to a tailspin.”

McCafferty explained that this particular evening at the salon was consistent with their past difficult experiences. “I was ready to give up, but she wasn’t,” she said. “She sat on the floor with my baby in her lap, and she cut his hair. They talked about Dory and Christmas, and she even let him spray her with her water bottle.”

Concluding her post, the mom shared a message on behalf of her family and others facing similar challenges. “Autism can be so very, very hard, but people like this make our days just a little easier,” she wrote.

McCafferty’s post received nearly 95,000 likes. The Love What Matters Facebook page shared her story as well. The comments sections on both posts are filled with responses from fellow parents of kids with autism.

McCafferty told The Huffington Post that Kaylen was a real lifesaver that day at the salon. When Isaiah had a meltdown, she went above and beyond to help him find “his quiet, safe space” in the midst of the overwhelming sensory stimulation.

“She wasn’t fazed by his screams; she understood his fears,” McCafferty recalled. “She figured out where it was he needed to go, which just so happened to be the floor, and she took him there.”

The mom said Isaiah has a “beautiful soul” and a warm heart. “He is everything that you would want your child to be,” she said. “He’s fun and full of energy. He’s sweet and kind, and ridiculously funny. He loves with everything he has.”

Isaiah’s love is especially boundless when it comes to his 6-year-old brother, Alex. “They have an amazing bond, and I credit Alex for a lot of the progress Isaiah has made with his social interactions,” McCafferty said. “Alex is able to comfort Isaiah when the rest of us can’t, and always seems to know just what Isaiah needs to soothe him.”

McCafferty told HuffPost she hopes Isaiah’s haircut story will bring hope to other parents of kids with special needs. “I want them to realize that even though it can feel like it, they are not alone,” she said. “I want everyone to see just how much love and kindness matter.”

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated that the mother lives in South Carolina. She lives in West Virginia.

Beyond War

Beyond War

A profoundly heartening view of human nature, Beyond War offers a hopeful prognosis for a future without war. Douglas P. Fry convincingly argues that our ancient ancestors were not innately warlike-and neither are we. He points out that, for perhaps ninety-nine percent of our history, for well over a million years, humans lived in nomadic hunter-and-gatherer groups, egalitarian bands where warfare was a rarity. Drawing on archaeology and fascinating recent fieldwork on hunter-gatherer bands from around the world, Fry debunks the idea that war is ancient and inevitable. For instance, among Aboriginal Australians, warfare was an extreme anomaly. Fry also points out that even today, when war seems ever present, the vast majority of us live peaceful, nonviolent lives. We are not as warlike as we think, and if we can learn from our ancestors, we may be able to move beyond war to provide real justice and security for the world.

Cities Beyond Borders

Cities Beyond Borders

Drawing on a body of research covering primarily Europe and the Americas, but stretching also to Asia and Africa, from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, this book explores the methodological and heuristic implications of studying cities in relation to one another. Moving fluidly between comparative and transnational methods, as well as across regional and national lines, the contributors to this volume demonstrate the necessity of this broader view in assessing not just the fundamentals of urban life, the way cities are occupied and organised on a daily basis, but also the urban mindscape, the way cities are imagined and represented. In doing so the volume provides valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of using multiple cities to form historical inquiries.

Reading Beyond the Book: The Social Practices of Contemporary Literary Culture

Reading Beyond the Book: The Social Practices of Contemporary Literary Culture

Literary culture has become a form of popular culture over the last fifteen years thanks to the success of televised book clubs, film adaptations, big-box book stores, online bookselling, and face-to-face and online book groups. This volume offers the first critical analysis of mass reading events and the contemporary meanings of reading in the UK, USA, and Canada based on original interviews and surveys with readers and event organizers.

The resurgence of book groups has inspired new cultural formations of what the authors call “shared reading.” They interrogate the enduring attraction of an old technology for readers, community organizers, and government agencies, exploring the social practices inspired by the sharing of books in public spaces and revealing the complex ideological investments made by readers, cultural workers, institutions, and the mass media in the meanings of reading.

Empowering Series Gives Princesses Lives Beyond Happily Ever After

The usual fairy tale goes: Prince Charming sweeps a princess off her feet, they ride into the sunset and that’s where the story ends. But that’s not how it works in Amelia Case’s fairy tale universe.

Case, mother to 12-year-old Isabella and 9-year-old Sophia, is the creator of “Princesses with a Twist,” a book series that gives readers a look at what life is like for princesses after their happy endings. She came up with this added layer of princess fiction to spread a message of female empowerment to her daughters and show that these classic characters can accomplish their goals — even after they find their prince.

“It’s a way to give the princesses some self-esteem, too,” Case told the Chicago Tribune. “They’ve been through some serious stuff. Why on earth would any story end there?”

So far, Case and her daughters have written 15 stories about beloved princess characters. In Cinderella’s post-pumpkin carriage life, the princess finds meaning in starting a business that creates — you guessed it — glass slippers. Snow White faces her fear of apples in Case’s fictional tale, and they end up becoming her favorite food. Other featured princesses include Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid.

From offering their imaginations to choosing an illustrator (and even sketching illustration ideas of their own), Isabella and Sophia have been there every step of the way. “Except for choosing the font and paying the bills, they have just about done it all,” Case said in an email to The Huffington Post.

 Story continues below images

Case hopes to create the first three books with help from a Kickstarter campaign. According to a video featured on the page, the money raised will fund things like professional illustrations and legal fees. As of July 9, the campaign has raised more than $ 16,000 of the $ 30,000 goal.

With more than half of the money raised and two weeks left in the campaign, it seems like the “Princesses with a Twist” series is well on its way to proving that the life of a princess isn’t all ball gowns and cute animal sidekicks. Like the site suggests, “there is more to all of these lovely characters than just a pretty face and a handsome prince.”

A Political Parable: The Little Bush That Could — The Roots to the White House and Beyond

Gather around, my children, for a tale that’s sure to warm the heart. Watch the lay of the land unfold as a not-so-exotic vegetation emerges from among us, coming from nowhere to a position of leadership. It’s sure to encourage us all to pursue our dreams and never give up hope.

2015-06-11-1434054370-3471484-Elm.jpg

Once upon a time, there lived a nondescript bush. Lonely and unrecognized amidst the more colorful vegetation, he dreamed one day of becoming a bush in his own right. For too long he had stood in the shadow of bush the elder, a bush transformed in people’s eyes into a mighty elm. Each day, he looked up at that great tree, sobbing softly to himself: “I am somebody, yes, I am… Someday I too can attain that same greatness of stature.”

But a number of obstacles stood in his path. Though the bushes had all been raised in a hothouse, they all suffered from the illusion that they were actually part of the forest primeval. His younger sibling, the shrub, had always stressed his rural roots. After all, where does one find most bushes — certainly not in urbane, metropolitan areas.

In 1910, the major leagues of baseball, created and subsidized the minor leagues, generally locating them in small cities and towns. Thus were born the “bush leagues” and “bush towns,” along with an association with things “mediocre,” “second rate,” “amateur,” and “unsophisticated;” in short, the “inferior reaches.”

2015-06-11-1434054663-7290931-Bush3.jpg

Shrub had embraced this definition. But it was a real problem for our aspiring bush — how to kick that image.

Adding to his woes was that when folks got fatigued, exhausted, sapped, or pooped out, they said they were “bushed” — perhaps from the 19th century meaning, “lost in the woods.” So it was that the actions of his brother, shrub, had left folks “bushed out.”

Adding further to his woes was that our little bush, like others in the family, had a speaking style, described as “bushwa(h),” causing him to sound “nonsensical and pretentious,” “exaggerated,” and “deceitful;” i.e., “full of baloney.”

Coined in about 1900, “bushwa” derives from an old word, “bodwash,” meaning “bosh” or “trash.” It, in turn, derives from the old French bois de vache, “cow’s wood or “dried manure.” We don’t use “bushwa,” very much nowadays, preferring instead to call ’em the way we see’z ’em.

Poor little bush. He wanted so much to have everyone root for him, meaning they would be a regular supporter of his, to cheer him on. This “root,” incidentally, comes from the British dialect route, “to roar or bellow.”

Encouraged by his supporters and undeterred by the obstacles, he set off on his trek — bright-eyed and — what else but — bushy tailed — “eager and energetic,” “in fine fettle,” “wide awake,” and “prepared for any situation.”

2015-06-11-1434055115-4121761-Bush.jpg

We’ve been bright-eyed and bushy tailed since the 1930s, alluding to the seemingly attentive behavior of squirrels, chipmunks and other animals, as displayed in their wide eyes, quick movement, and high degree of nervous energy,.

But a funny thing happened on the way to his goal. A bunch of rival vegetation lay in ambush for him from the old French embusche, from embuscher, literally meaning, “to hide in the bushes.” It was an insidious plot, the ultimate roots of which are in the Latin insidere, “to lie in wait.”

In plain English, they were hoping — you guessed it — to bushwhack him. Our very first bushwhackers, got their name by pulling their boats up parts of the Mississippi River by grasping at bushes along the bank. Today, bushwhacking is back in style; though the grasping of straws, rather than bushes, is more the norm.

There was lots of bushwhacking during the Civil War by the soldiers who hid in the bushes, wood, or thickets as part of their guerrilla tactics. Later, bushwhacking came to mean “making one’s way through unbroken forest,” by pushing bushes aside or breaking them.

Undaunted by such stalkers, and taking advantage of the greenery in which he hid and from which he received sustenance, the little bush moved on. Weed-whacking the competition, he made his way out of the woods to the big horticultural Show on a certain magic Tuesday in March. This would be his telling encounter. Everyone in the forest was following his progress. Some were fir him, others agin. All the firs were on pins and needles awaiting the result.

Could the little bush really do it? Would he go on from there to his final resting place? Would he finally make it to his ultimate destination… and at last sink his roots into the fabled rose garden?

Out in the Night: A Gripping Reminder of LGBTQ Issues “Beyond Caitlyn” [Spoilers]

2015-06-09-1433883790-7981613-AllfourPOV.jpg

The NJ4: Venice Brown, Terrain Dandridge, Patreese Johnson and Renata Hill

The initial overwhelmingly positive reaction to “newborn” Caitlyn Jenner was a worldwide watershed moment to be sure.

But Out in the Night, a POV documentary airing June 22nd on PBS, reminds us that countless others in the LGBTQ/gender non-conforming communities still face discrimination daily.

The documentary opens with a police radio call describing “officers fighting with gangs…with Bloods and Crips.”

The assailants are identified as “five female blacks” who, according to an “anonymous unverified” account may have stabbed a male victim. Subsequent media sound bites allege said victim was stabbed by a “pack of lesbians,” who attacked him “just because he was a straight man.”

The four alleged “assailants” tell a very different story in the film.

According to Renata Hill, she and friends Terrain Dandridge, Patreese Johnson and Venice Brown headed for New York to “to have fun, look at girls, be gay.”

“We thought we wouldn’t have any problems,” she adds. “We could be ourselves.”

She was wrong.

Their night on the town took a dangerous turn when a young man, Dwayne Buckle, took a liking to one of the four. In his court testimony, read by an actor in the film, Buckle said, “They looked feminine. One was slightly pretty. So I said, ‘Hi’ to her.”

But Johnson remembers him saying, “Lemme get some o’ that,” a statement she took as a playful request for a sip of soda.

Wrong again.

“He said, ‘I don’t want that,'” Johnson recalls. “He pointed at my lower area and said, ‘I want that.'”

When Johnson laughed and told him, “Mister, I’m gay,” she alleges that the man spat and threw his cigarette, yelling, “Dyke bitches! You lesbian bitches! I’ll f–k you straight!”

Hill says she and her friends began to walk away, backwards, realizing, “He was coming for us. That was clear as day.”

Surveillance camera video proves that he came for them with a vengeance, ripping a handful of dreads from Brown’s scalp and even pinning Hill down on the ground with his arm. A group of male bystanders finally intervened, wrestling Buckle roughly to the ground and berating him for fighting with women.

Despite that damning video evidence, the four women were arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree with intent to use, assault in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree, gang assault in the 1st and 2nd degree, and attempted murder.

And the media went into a feeding frenzy.

2015-06-09-1433883874-7250738-POVheadline1.JPG

One of many lurid, fear-mongering headlines

Fox News said the attack was part of a crime wave instigated by lesbian gangs called “Gays Taking Over” and “Dykes Taking Over” who were attacking and raping young girls in Philadelphia and Tennessee. On camera, New York Post reporter Laura Italiano proudly declares she still stands by her description of the women as a “seething, Sapphic, septet from Newark, New Jersey.”

“I don’t think it was a stretch to say they were out for blood,” Italiano insists.

The jury agreed. All four women were convicted. Three were sentenced to 8 years in prison. Johnson received 11 years for stabbing Buckle with a small knife. The wound was not life threatening.

Director/producer blair dorosh-walther–she prefers lowercase–believes the “NJ4” case is yet another example of prejudice and discrimination in the American legal and law enforcement systems.

2015-06-09-1433884057-2129216-doroshwalter.jpg

Director blair dorosh-walther–she prefers lowercase–on set

“There is so much that still needs to happen,” she explained in an email exchange. “Unfortunately, I don’t think it is just a matter of changing a few laws or fixing particular parts of the criminal legal system or putting cameras on police. I think the entire system of law enforcement and the legal system need to be destroyed and reconstructed. The system is just too rooted in prejudices with no oversight. I think it is unwise to try and crawl out of a racist system inch by inch.”

dorosh-walther also had harsh words for the media.

“I believe the media vilified them because of their intersectional identities,” she said. “When I spoke with Laura Italiano, the New York Post journalist who is interviewed in Out in the Night, she repeatedly referred to the women as ‘tough.’ What makes these women ‘tough?’ That they are Black? Because they look like Black men? Because they physically fought back? Because they do not dress like you? What is it exactly that makes them ‘tough?'”

And though this story unfolded in 2006, dorosh-walther isn’t so sure our attitudes toward racial “minorities” and those who identify as LGBTQ or non-gender conforming have changed as much as we like to think.

“It is great that Caitlyn Jenner has received such a warm welcome,” she said. “Likewise Laverne Cox, who is also an activist and fights for trans civil rights constantly. My fear in lionizing individual people or even a law is that people who are not directly affected think the fight for equality or civil rights are over.”

As for the four women whose stories inspired Out in the Night, dorosh-walther hopes viewers will, “honor their unapologetic defense of who they are.”

“They were a pocket of resistance, both that night and in the courtroom when they plead [sic] not guilty,” she asserted. “They were facing 25 years, so a not-guilty plea was incredibly difficult and holds the courts accountable. They should be honored for the resistance, resilience and perseverance.”

This Pet Duck Is Beyond Psyched To See His Human Bestie Come Home From School

Friendship knows no species — just ask these two BFFs.

Jonny and Nibbles are the best of friends. Nibbles is an 11-month-old duck, and Jonny is a 10-year-old human. BuzzFeed recently spoke with Jonny’s mother, Jamie Toschi, who posted a video of her son’s feathered friend eagerly awaiting the arrival of his BFF. In the video, Nibbles sits shotgun in the car while he and Toschi wait for Jonny to get off the school bus. And Nibbles gets totally turnt, quacking up a storm, when he sees his bestie. “I knew he was going to start quaking when he saw Jonny get off the bus,” Toschi told the site.

Nibbles is a Rouen drake who has had a special bond with Jonny since his birth, Toschi wrote on YouTube. Jonny was best friends with Daisy, Nibble’s mom, who died a month after she laid 10 eggs. When the baby chicks hatched, Jonny was the first person Nibbles saw. “Jonny was devastated when Daisy died and he held on to Nibbles and never let go,” Toschi wrote.

This special moment blossomed into a wonderful friendship. Toschi chronicles the growing bond between the boy and his duck on a Facebook page, “The Adventures of Jonny and Nibbles.” There, she describes Nibbles as Jonny’s BFF (BIRD FRIEND FOREVER). The photos show the two friends playing outside, riding in the car, and just chilling and watching TV together at home. You know, best friend stuff.

Nibbles has helped Jonny to come out of his shell.” Toschi told BuzzFeed. ““This duck has definitely made an impact on his life.”

Above and Beyond Official Trailer 1 (2015) – Documentary HD

In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. This ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride. ABOVE AND BEYOND is their story. The first major feature-length documentary about the foreign airmen in the ’48 War, ABOVE AND BEYOND brings together new interviews as well as stunning aerial footage to present a fascinating, little-known tale filled with heart, heroism and high-flying chutzpah.

Beyond Art

Beyond Art

Dominic McIver Lopes articulates and defends a ‘buck passing theory of art’, namely that a work of art is nothing but a work in one of the arts. Having traced philosophical interest in theories of art to a reaction to certain puzzle cases of avant-garde art, he argues that none of the theories that have dominated philosophy since the 1960s adequately copes with these works. Whereas these theories have reached a dialectical impasse wherein they reiterate, and cannot resolve, disagreement over the puzzle cases, the buck passing theory illuminates the radical provocations of avant-garde art. In addition, when supplemented by a systematic framework for crafting theories of the individual arts, the buck passing theory grounds our empirical inquiries into the arts as well as our practices of appreciation and art criticism. Lopes seeks to model the diverse strategies employed by humanists and social and behavioural scientists who study the different arts. He gives the specificity of each art form a central role in our appreciative endeavours, and yet he stresses the continuity of the arts with similar, non-art activities such as fashion design, sports and games, cuisine, nature appreciation, and non-literary writing.

Problems in Bed, Booze, and Beyond

It’s hard to believe that five years have passed since Lady Gaga recorded “Bad Romance.” But with the fifth anniversary of the release date of Gaga’s album, The Fame Monster, on October 26, 2014 it’s interesting to note the song’s impact on popular culture.

  • “Bad Romance” earned Lady Gaga the 2010 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Short Form Music Video.
  • At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, “Bad Romance” won seven of the ten awards for which it had been nominated.
  • By December 31, 2010, “Bad Romance” had become one of the music industry’s best-selling singles of all time, with 9.7 million copies sold worldwide.
  • By August, 2013, the song had achieved sales of 5.401 million digital downloads.
  • The Recording Industry Association of America certified “Bad Romance” as a ten-time platinum success.
  • As can be seen in the following YouTube clips, “Bad Romance” also inspired a wealth of parody videos ranging from the political to the surreal; from wildly scatological humor to an animated tongue-in-cheek sendup.

The crucial lesson to be learned from this is that once a rock-solid template becomes embedded in popular culture, numerous permutations are bound to ensue. As one culls through the literature based on bad romances, it becomes obvious that problems with alcohol, control issues, and sexual compatibility are recurring themes. Two Bay area productions highlighted these issues in impressive stagings of highly-celebrated American plays.

* * * * * * * * * *

Many years ago, I was interviewing a young soprano who was in the apprentice program at the Santa Fe Opera. Having just graduated from a music conservatory, she confessed to being at a loss when it came to sitting down for interviews with national music critics. She told me that one interviewer after another had asked her the standard questions about what productions she had been in, where she would be appearing in the upcoming season, and what major recordings she had coming out. What she didn’t know how to tell them was that, once the Santa Fe Opera season ended, she would have to go back to waiting tables in Denver.

The San Francisco Bay area has a very active theatre community which has provided steady work for numerous artists who have chosen to live here rather than pursue potentially more lucrative careers in New York or Los Angeles. Most, if not all of them, will swear that this is a quality of life issue (or, as someone explained to me when I moved to the Bay area in 1972 and inquired about earthquakes, “The bottom line is that you can have 15 great years in San Francisco or 25 shitty ones in Los Angeles. The choice is yours!”)

Frequently, I’ll see some very good work done in small theatres that few people in the mainstream ever bother to attend. Occasionally, one learns via the grapevine or in unusual ways about an upcoming production at a company with scant resources for marketing and media outreach.

Because Bay area audiences often get to experience the work of a core group of actors in a wide variety of roles during the course of any season, one tends to keep an eye out for chances to see some of these people tackle especially challenging roles. In late July, while attending a performance of Dracula Inquest at Central Works, I happened to notice that one of the actor’s program bios made reference to an upcoming appearance in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof as part of the annual Eugene O’Neill Festival in Danville.

Huh? My interest perked up immediately.

As it turned out, the Role Players Ensemble of Danville was presenting the play that won Tennessee Williams his 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama using the 1974 version for which the playwright (who died in 1983) had made numerous revisions and strengthened the third act. The lead roles would be taken by two extremely talented young actors whose work I have admired (and who were both performing in the cast of Dracula Inquest). At the time I had no idea they had also become a couple offstage.

Dracula Inquest (Photo by: Jim Norrena)

  • I had seen Megan Trout perform in productions by the Shotgun Players of Adam Peck’s musical adaptation of Bonnie & Clyde, Tom Stoppard’s daunting trilogy entitled The Coast of Utopia, the Aurora Theatre Company’s production of Samuel D. Hunter’s provocative A Bright New Boise, and several other plays.
  • Joshua Schell left a really strong impression following his performances in Thomas Bradshaw’s outrageous sex comedy, The Bereaved, at Crowded Fire Theatre Company and his starring role in the CentralWorks trilogy of plays based on the story of Richard the Lionheart.

To have an opportunity to watch these talented and extremely photogenic actors perform two of the most famous roles written by Tennessee Williams in Danville’s 245-seat, 101-year-old Village Theatre under the direction of George Maguire (whose work I have always respected) was quite tantalizing.

Megan Trout and Joshua Schell as Maggie and Brick in
Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (Photo by: John Carter)

If any play reeks of a bad romance, it is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Its protagonists are Brick (a former college football star whose career as a sports announcer was ruined by his alcoholism), his sexually frustrated wife, Maggie (a relatively poor girl from Memphis who married into a wealthy family), and the unseen ghost of Brick’s best friend, Skipper (a closeted homosexual whose unrequited love for Brick caused him to drink himself to death).

Adding to Brick and Maggie’s personal misery are Brick’s blood relations: brother Gooper (Robert Sholty), his prodigiously fertile wife, Mae (Jessica Lea Risco), and their tribe of rugrats that Maggie refers to as “no-neck monsters.” The clan has gathered to celebrate the 65th birthday of Brick’s father, Big Daddy (Randy Anger), who has been undergoing medical tests at the Ochsner Clinic for a cancer scare.

Although the initial report is that Big Daddy is cancer free, the truth — which has been kept from Big Daddy and his wife, Big Mama (Beth Chastain) — is that the disease is malignant and rapidly metastasizing to various organs in his body. It’s important to keep in mind that during the time in which Cat on a Hot Tin Roof takes place, no one ever wanted to mention the C-word any more than they wanted to deal seriously with alcoholism or an intensely platonic bromance between two football jocks.

2014-10-20-cat2.jpg

Poster art for the original Broadway production of
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Ever since its 1955 Broadway premiere (with a cast headed by Barbara Bel Geddes, Ben Gazzara, Burl Lives, and Mildred Dunnock) and the release of the 1958 film adaptation (starring Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, and Judith Anderson), the legend of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has metastasized almost as rapidly as Big Daddy’s cancer. These days, the play is often produced as a major star vehicle (in 1990 I saw it with a cast headed by an over-ripe 46-year-old Kathleen Turner playing opposite Daniel Hugh Kelly, Charles Durning, and Polly Holiday).

To witness two lean and healthy young leads like Trout and Schell do a stunning job of delineating the conflicts between Maggie, Brick, and the rest of the Pollitt clan using a version of the play that, under Maguire’s direction, clarified so many moments in the script, was cause for celebration. Working on a unit set by Paul Collins, the production benefitted immensely from Randy Anger’s powerful and poignant performance as Big Daddy — a huge man with no patience for pretense who has been surrounded by greed and “mendacity” for his entire life and been left with nothing but scorn for his wife, son Gooper, daughter-in-law Mae, and their obnoxious brood.

On rare occasions in regional theatre, you get more than you bargained for. In this case, it was a near-revelatory production of a classic work by one of America’s greatest playwrights that laid bare all the petty squabbling, medical ignorance, sexual frustration, shattered dreams, and rampant greed that had held the Pollitt family in its grip for years (by the final curtain, administering a morphine drip to ease Big Daddy’s pain was the least of the family’s problems).

fireworks display in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Photo by: George F. Maguire)

With three hugely talented and forceful actors using every bit of their craft, I can assure you that this production was well worth the trip to Danville. It made me feel like I was hearing Williams’s writing for the very first time. Bravo!

No one in his right mind would ever suggest that Cat on a Hot Tin Roof took place in a feminist culture. However, Gina Gionfriddo’s comedy of contemporary crises entitled Rapture, Blister, Burn (one of the 2013 finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama which recently received its Bay Area premiere from the Aurora Theatre Company) most certainly does. And yet, after decades of sexual politics, the play’s core is about a strained marriage whose conflicts reflect a familiar set of ingredients:

  • One character’s struggle with alcoholism.
  • An ineffectual husband with no interest in living up to his potential.
  • The ghost of a past romance that was never fully realized.

While Cat on a Hot Tin Roof may be soaking in testosterone, Rapture, Blister, Burn is awash in estrogen. Its characters include:

  • Don (Gabriel Marin), the dean at a small, inconsequential liberal arts college in New England whose ambition has been sapped by smoking lots of marijuana and watching Internet porn in order to escape from the harridan-like behavior of his wife, who is a recovering alcoholic.
  • Gwen (Rebecca Schweitzer), Don’s wife and the mother of his two children. A dry drunk with major control issues, Gwen often wonders what her life might have been like if she had followed a career path instead of becoming a mother. Their second child, Devon, was basically created in an attempt to keep their marriage afloat.

2014-10-20-rapture1.jpg

Gwen (Rebecca Schweitzer), Catherine (Marilee Talkington)
and Don (Gabriel Marin) in a tense moment from
Rapture, Blister, Burn (Photo by: David Allen)

  • Catherine (Marilee Talkington), Gwen’s college roommate who has achieved that rare level of notoriety in academia — a strong feminist celebrity (nicknamed “The Doomsday Chick”) who is known for her writing and appearances on talk shows. Shortly after learning that her mother suffered a heart attack, Catherine was seized with doubts about not having raised a family. To her surprise, she occasionally found herself agreeing with the noted arch conservative, Phyllis Schlafly, on matters related to a woman’s place in the world.
  • Avery (Nicole Javier), one of Don’s troubled students who has been babysitting for his two boys. On the night of Catherine’s arrival in town, Avery’s black eye completely freaks out Gwen, who insists that she be sent home. While Avery represents a younger generation with radically different values than Gwen’s, she’s no fool. She knows a troubled marriage when she sees one.
  • Alice (Lillian Bogovich), Catherine’s mother who, although glad to spend time with her celebrated daughter, is not afraid to face her own mortality.

2014-10-20-rapture2.jpg

scene from Rapture, Blister, Burn (Photo by: David Allen)

Old friends getting together. What could possibly go wrong?

  • In order to earn some money while staying with her mother, Catherine asks Gwen to see if she can arrange some teaching assignments for summer school and the fall semester (this is a task that the highly-driven, super-organized Gwen can easily accomplish).
  • When Catherine offers to teach a course entitled “The Fall of American Civilization” (with a special emphasis on torture horror as an entertainment genre and sadistic pornography as a distraction from real life), only two students register for her course: Gwen and Avery.
  • When Gwen’s loose lips spill some of Don’s secrets, her indiscretion reignites an old romance between Don and Catherine.
  • With Gwen envious of Catherine’s celebrity lifestyle and Catherine wondering whether she should have had a family instead of a career, a curious swap is negotiated. Don will move in with Catherine while Gwen takes their precocious teenage son (who loves show tunes) to live with her in Catherine’s New York apartment.

Needless to say, the best-laid plans soon fall apart.

  • Don’s lack of ambition becomes abundantly clear to Catherine (who starts pushing him to write a book).
  • Gwen’s (presumed to be gay) teenage son falls in love with a Goth girl that he met on line for tickets to Wicked.
  • Perhaps out of weakness, Don and Gwen make up and move back in together.

2014-10-20-rapture3.jpg

Lillian Bogovich, Marilee Talkington, and Nicole Javier in a
scene from Rapture, Blister Burn (Photo by: David Allen)

That leaves Catherine, Avery, and Alice (three women of distinctly different generations with radically different thoughts about feminism) to bond together in a new and unusual way. One of the hidden perks of Gionfriddo’s script is that, despite paying homage due to Betty Friedan, it may be the only feminist tract in which Phyllis Schlafly gets the last laugh.

As directed by Desdemona Chiang on Kate Boyd’s flexible unit set, Aurora’s ensemble laid on Gionfriddo’s bittersweet jokes and personal digs with a trowel. However, midway through the second act, Rapture, Blister, Burn started to lose steam as the heat of rekindled romance began to fade, the joyless Gwen returned to town, and all four women realized that Don was a pretty hopeless case.

2014-10-20-rapture4.jpg

Don (Gabriel Marin) and Catherine (Marilee Talkington) in
a scene from Rapture, Blister, Burn (Photo by: David Allen)

Over the years, Gabriel Marin has perfected the art of playing a spineless straight man. Watching his body language as he tries to duck the strident anger of his wife (who would much prefer to be drunk) and his lover (who wants more from him than he can give) was a joy.

I was particularly impressed with Marilee Talkington’s characterization of Catherine and Nicole Javier’s feisty Avery. While Lillian Bogovich’s Alice gave her daughter plenty of loving support (bolstered with margaritas), the manipulative abrasiveness of Rebecca Schweitzer’s Gwen often made it difficult to appreciate the actor’s work because her character was so tightly wound and utterly obnoxious.

Zimbabwe: Beyond a School Certificate

Zimbabwe: Beyond a School Certificate

This book chronicles how Zimbabwe''s boom educational and health systems unravelled after independence in 1980 and how exuberance gave way to pessimism. The uncomfortable truth about how socialism lost its way and the dramatic reversal of fortune is told. No jobs were created for the school leavers, inflation went up and poverty started to creep in. The 1980s actually laid the foundations for the economic problems Zimbabwe now faces. Trapped in an ideological commitment to socialist enterprises, policy makers permitted accountability to slip, carried co-operatives further than they should have, and pandered to socialist greed with its corrupt tendencies.

Zimbabwe: Beyond a School Certificate examines the relations between governance and discursive practices in the modern labour market: the role of institutions of learning and skills development, and the brain drain as creative and retrogressive forces in the economy; labour laws and the job market in a critical methodology for organisational research; and the health system and the poverty datum line as a measurement of the dynamics in industrial development.

This is a genuinely authentic analysis based on statistical data which support the unfolding events in the southern African country. This book is useful for students (and lecturers alike) and donor agencies wanting to know more about Zimbabwe. Organisations helping to fight the HIV pandemic will also find the book a source of information.

From Homeless To Harvard (And Beyond): Khadijah Williams Starts New Life In NYC (VIDEO)

In 2009, Oprah met Khadijah Williams, a driven young woman who grew up in homeless shelters but never stopped believing in herself and the power of education. Though she went to 12 different schools in 12 years, she managed to graduate high school with honors and was accepted into Harvard University. Four years later, she graduated with a degree in sociology and even got a shout-out from Oprah during her 2013 commencement speech.

Williams — who says she was in the bathroom when a friend came running in to tell her Oprah was talking about her on stage — now has quite an impressive reference. “Just to have someone like Miss Winfrey acknowledge you and say, ‘You did a great thing,’ … it’s not only a great confidence booster, but it’s also something I can send to employers like, “Look! Oprah talked about me, here’s my recommendation!'” Williams says.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” recently caught up with Williams in New York City, where she landed a job and moved into her own apartment after graduation. “Right now I am a project manager at an education technology firm,” she says. It’s a very adult job, I have actual responsibilities – which is a little bit scary, but it’s exciting.”

“Just being able to have my own apartment and make adult decisions — or try to, anyway — is very empowering,” Williams says. “And I absolutely want to give back. I will give back. And right now I’m just setting that foundation so I can do that.”

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on OWN. Programming note: In 2014, “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs on a new day and time. Catch up with past “Oprah Show” guests, newsmakers and celebrities on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET, beginning Jan. 3.
