At 33 years old, Susie was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was 1978, and the disease wasn’t yet a significant part of the public consciousness. Doctors didn’t know much about treating it. There were no support groups, toll-free numbers or Internet forums.
Eventually, Susie lost her battle with the disease; however, her memory lives on thanks to her sister, Nancy. In 1982, Nancy founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. To this day, the organization has invested more than $ 2.5 billion in breast cancer research. Watch as Nancy shares how her life’s work has affected hundreds of thousands of women.
