Bobby Hundreds’ Not So Surprising Path From Streetwear to Author

LOS ANGELES — Vernon is an industrial city south of downtown filled with low-rise industrial buildings, where big rigs heave and clog major thoroughfares. Here, as well as places dotting the San Gabriel Valley, is the California apparel industry’s beating heart, and it’s here, in a nondescript, 90,000-square-foot building, that The Hundreds sits. Framed art adorns one wall of the lobby entrance. There’s a screen printer, a recording studio and space to host the occasional punk show, most recently New York hardcore band H20. It’s what cofounder Bobby Kim (or Bobby Hundreds) calls a Never-Never Land of Lost Boys and Girls, holed up in a world created nearly 16 years ago.
WWD caught up with The Hundreds at an interesting time in its history. The business blew up, cycled into a contraction, the staff had to be cut and stores closed, but in recent years there’s been another upswing. The Hundreds is no longer an emerging brand, but it hasn’t been relegated to old and irrelevant either. Now it’s stretching its legs into a new endeavor — helping other brands get off the ground — through the fledgling Second Sons services arm.
Kim, on a more personal level, is perhaps at an

Victoria Beckham, Alexa Chung, Bobby Abley Join London Fashion Week Schedule

LONDON — Victoria Beckham is just one of the new names to join the London Fashion Week women’s calendar in September, according to the preliminary LFW schedule, which is now on the British Fashion Council’s web site.
Other newcomers include Alexa Chung, who has been eschewing the traditional show schedule in favor of themed events hosted around the world and a see-now-buy-now format, and men’s wear talents Bobby Abley and Kiko Kostadinov.
Burberry will host its seasonal show on Sept. 17 and though not new to the lineup, all eyes will be on the brand this season since this will be the first show from new creative director Riccardo Tisci.
Beckham will host her spring 2019 show in London on the morning of Sept. 16 and mark the 10-year anniversary of her business. The company also said that more events, exclusive pieces and other activations will take place throughout the year to celebrate the brand’s decade.
The contemporary label Rixo London, best known for its mid-priced printed dresses, will be hosting a see-now-buy-now presentation during the five-day event, which runs from September 14 to 18, while emerging men’s wear labels Bobby Abley and Kiko Kostadinov are also taking the September plunge as they dip

RHONY Star Jill Zarin’s Husband Bobby Dies After Battle with Cancer

Jill Zarin‘s husband Bobby has died from cancer.

Jill announced the news in a family statement on her official website, revealing that Bobby died on Saturday surrounded by his family.

“With the heaviest of hearts, we are devastated to share the news that our beloved Bobby Zarin passed away peacefully today surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer,” the family said in a statement. “There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are. Thank you, everyone for all your love, and support during this difficult time.”

His stepdaughter Aly Shapiro remembered him in a touching Instagram post also on Saturday, sharing a gallery of photos of the two over the years.

“We ❤ Bobby…” she wrote. “Thank you for giving me such a wonderful family and being the most incredible step-Dad anyone could ever ask for. I don’t remember a time without you, and you will not be forgotten. Every shot of patron, every time we listen to Hotel California, every vroom of a Ferrari you will be right there with us. You fought with dignity and courage, surrounded by all of us with love and respect till the very end. You can rest In peace now, we love you so much.”

She also provided service details, which will be held Monday, Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. at Riverside Memorial in New York City.

Bobby was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2009 and went on to have his thyroid removed as well as underwent radioactive iodine treatment.

“The radioactive iodine usually kills off whatever undetectable cancer cells are left in your body after surgery,” he previously told PEOPLE. “We thought it was cured – and it usually is in about 93 percent of cases. But I wasn’t able to absorb the radioactive iodine. So it came back.”

The cancer wound up returning and spread to his lungs. In Fall 2016, Jill revealed to PEOPLE that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent Gamma Knife Radiosurgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Although the Real Housewives of New York City alum remained hopeful throughout Bobby’s treatment, she said “his cancer took an unexpected turn” over the summer. In July, Bobby was admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he recovered from a procedure.

“He is not going down without a fight,” Jill told PEOPLE exclusively. “We’re hoping for a miracle,” she said about the love of her life.

After he was admitted to the hospital in July, Jill hadn’t left his side and did everything she could to make him comfortable.

“I’m in shock,” she said. “I’m in physical shock. I’ve lost 8 lbs. already. He was doing well for a very, very long time. Then the cancer came back in his brain last fall and since then, it’s been one thing after another.”

As Bobby’s treatment continued, Jill remained dedicated to raising money for thyroid cancer research for him and others who have the deadly disease through her Annual Luxury Luncheon, which was opened to the public for the first time last year.

Last January, the couple celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary. “Happy 16th wedding Anniversary to the most wonderful husband, father and friend in the world. I love you with all my ❤❤❤ we will get thru this and be together forever,” Jill wrote about her husband.

And in celebration of his birthday last February, Jill posted multiple photos of Bobby on Instagram with loving captions. “I’m so happy and at peace these days with the love of my life living La Vida Boca!” she wrote.

“He is the most loving and caring person I have ever known besides my father. Sometimes life just isn’t fair,” she previously told PEOPLE about Bobby. “But we have such a great love story. He is the love of my life and I will do everything in my power to heal and care for him.”

Bobby ran Zarin Fabrics, which was opened by his father, Harry Zarin, in 1936. The New York native is survived by Jill, his three children — Jonathan, David and Jennifer Zarin — and stepdaughter, Ally.

When Billie Beat Bobby: The True Story Behind Battle of the Sexes

Forty-four years ago this month, Billie Jean King, one of the top female tennis players of all time, beat Bobby Riggs, a retired former #1 player in the men’s circuit, in front of an estimated worldwide audience of 90 million people.

Besides sending the cocksure and (admittedly) chauvinistic Riggs into a depression, the match, which some dismissed as a publicity stunt, would go on to be remembered as a symbolic achievement for women in a decade of tremendous social progress.

Now, the story behind the game, and the changes it helped inspire, is on the big screen in Battle of the Sexes, with Steve Carell as Riggs and Emma Stone as King.

Here’s the true story behind the historic showdown:

Meet Bobby Riggs

When we first meet Riggs in Battle of the Sexes, he’s a 55-year-old has-been with a gambling problem and a desperate need for attention. But back in the 1940s, he was one of the best tennis players in the world, with six major titles under his belt. He had won Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships as an amateur and was ranked the #1 player internationally for three years.

After he retired in 1951, Riggs used his considerable prowess as a promoter and entertainer to keep the spotlight on tennis — and himself. Ultimately unsatisfied with his life outside the court, he found he could gain attention in the press by disparaging the quality of women’s tennis and claiming that he could beat any of its top players.

While Riggs’ pronouncements failed to gain much traction among female tennis pros — including King, who turned him down repeatedly — he finally found a taker in Australian champ Margaret Court, who, at the age of 30, was the top women’s player in the world.

They played each other in front of 5,000 fans in Ramona, California on May 13, Mother’s Day. Using a series of drop shots and lobs to fluster Court, Riggs won the match easily. Dubbed the Mother’s Day Massacre, the event earned Riggs the cover of both Sports Illustrated and Time.

“Now I want King bad,” he proclaimed after the game. “I’ll play her on clay, grass, wood, cement, marble or roller skates … We got to keep this sex thing going. I’m a woman specialist now.”

Billie Jean King

At 29, King was at the top of her game when she finally accepted Riggs’ challenge in July 1973, agreeing to participate in a $ 100,000, winner-take-all televised showdown dubbed by promoters as the “Battle of the Sexes.”

At this point in her career, King, who would go on to win a total of 29 Grand Slam titles before she retired, was already an outspoken advocate for women’s tennis and women’s rights in general.

RELATED: Billie Jean King, Emma Stone Discuss ‘Battle of the Sexes’

For instance, when the Pacific Southwest Tennis Tournament offered women just 15% of the prize money that it awarded the men — despite the fact that both finals earned equal ticket sales —  King led a walk-out. She and several other women went on to create the Virginia Slims tour and later the Women’s Tennis Association.

Although she was in her prime, like Riggs, King was also immersed in her own personal problems at the time of the match. During the lead up to the game, she was in the midst of an affair with her hairdresser-turned-secretary Marilyn Barnett. King was still married to her husband, Larry King, at the time. The couple divorced in 1987, and King has since become a prominent LGBTQ advocate.

The Battle of the Sexes

Despite her seriousness about promoting women’s tennis, King did playfully engage in the outrageous trash talking — led by Riggs — that drove press for the match throughout the summer.

The duo held a series of press conferences together, where banter included barbs from Riggs like, “I’ll tell you why I’ll win. She’s a woman and they don’t have the emotional stability.”

Finally, on September 20, 1973, 30,000 fans filled the new Houston Astrodome to enjoy the spectacle. King made her grand entrance on a Roman-style litter carried by four buff, shirtless members of the Rice University track team. Riggs, meanwhile, opted for a rickshaw driven by a group of buxom models dubbed “Bobby’s bosom buddies.”

They even exchanged gifts: King received a novelty-sized Sugar Daddy lollipop (Riggs’ personal sponsor for the match), while Riggs was given a baby pig, a symbol of his self-proclaimed chauvinism.

While the final score card suggests an easy victory for King, she later admitted to getting rattled early on, telling CNN that after Riggs broke her serve in the first set, she realized she “had to win” given the implications of the match.

Having learned from Court’s mistakes, King refused to be fooled by Riggs’ tricky drop shots and lobs. She ended up winning the contest in straight sets: 6–4, 6–3, 6–3.

The Aftermath

The match represented an enormously satisfying win for women in tennis, but critics were quick to downplay its significance.

Many argued that the age difference (26 years) between King and Riggs played too large a factor in the outcome, while others theorized that Riggs lost the match on purpose to settle gambling debts.

Years later ESPN would even report that the entire game was rigged by the mob, but those close to Bobby have said the rumors are “ridiculous” — citing Riggs’ fragile ego as proof enough alone that he’d never bet against himself.

Another clue lies in their personal post-match conversation, in which King later revealed Riggs told her, “I really underestimated you.” He also reportedly later said after the match, “This is the worst thing in the world I’ve ever done.”

On a positive note, after the “Battle of the Sexes,” King and Riggs remained close friends until his death in 1995. King said she spoke to Riggs the day before he died, and they said “I love you” to each other.

Battle of the Sexes is in select theaters now — it opens wide Sept. 29.

Bobby Kolade RTW Spring 2016

Nobody could accuse Bobby Kolade of playing it safe. His free-wheeling mix of tailored precision, bravado and multicultural references has made his show one of the hottest tickets during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. And boy did he mix things up for spring.
While not one to broadcast references, the German-Nigerian, Uganda-raised designer said before the show his starting point was Benin photographer Leonce Agbodjelou’s portraits of Egungun masqueraders. Specifically, he was inspired by depictions of their costumes covering every part of the body and dating back to a tradition from the 14th century. At the opposite end were bare-it-all Nineties pop stars such as Lil’ Kim and Aaliyah. And while Kolade is no Stones fan, there was a lot of Jumping Jack — or shall we say Jill — Flash to those silver-foil platform boots.
Having some fun was at the heart of it all. Thus a crisply tailored blue wool double-breasted jacket appeared literally cut in half, the left side attached to a silver glitter jumpsuit. Proper white cotton shirts or vibrant laser-cut ones sported brash snap buttons and one sleeve that flapped open, like a cape. He transformed the sleeve of a traditional African boubou (or long men’s robe) into

Bobby Flay Cheated With January Jones, Claims Estranged Wife In Court Docs

Bobby Flay and Stephanie March’s divorce is not what you’d call amicable.

The couple split in early April after 10 years of marriage and March is challenging the prenup under which Flay is required to pay the actress $ 5,000 a month.

In Touch reports that March is challenging the prenup on the grounds that Flay allegedly cheated on her with three women, including actress January Jones.

A source familiar with the case told the magazine that the former “Law & Order: SVU” actress is claiming in court papers that the 50-year-old celebrity chef “committed adultery” with Jones several times in the in early 2010. The magazine also reports that March has accused Flay of cheating with a food stylist and his assistant.

Page Six previously reported that it’s believed the couple’s prenup had no infidelity clause, and if true, March’s claims likely would not help her cause. However, TMZ reported that the actress also filed documents claiming that it’s her “amazing palate” that is responsible for his success.

Reps for Flay and Jones have yet to respond to requests for comment.

Bobby Womack, Legendary R&B Singer, Dies At 70

Bobby Womack, a colorful and highly influential R&B singer-songwriter who influenced artists from the Rolling Stones to Damon Albarn, has died. He was 70.

Womack’s publicist Sonya Kolowrat said Friday that the singer had died, but she could provide no other details. With an incomparable voice few could match, Womack was a stirring singer and guitarist in his own right and a powerful songwriter whose hits like “Across 110th Street,” ”If You Think You’re Lonely Now” and “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much” captured the imagination of future stars in rock ‘n’ roll and R&B.

“He had a style that nobody else could ever capture,” longtime friend, gospel singer Candi Staton, said in a statement. “I loved him and I will miss him so, so very much.”

Womack’s death comes as something of a surprise. Though he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago and overcame addiction and multiple health issues, including prostate and colon cancer, recently, he seemed in good health and spirits when he performed earlier this month at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

He told the BBC in 2013 the Alzheimer’s diagnosis came after he began having difficulty remembering his songs and the names of people he had worked with.

And there have been many. The soul singer cut a wide path through the music business as a performer and songwriter in a career that spanned seven decades. Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, long after he’d lost his fortune and his career to addiction.

He spoke of kicking his substance abuse problems in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press and all the friends he’d lost to drugs over the years.

“I think the biggest move for me was to get away from the drug scene,” Womack said. “It wasn’t easy. It was hard because everybody I knew did drugs. … They didn’t know when to turn it off. So for me looking at Wilson Pickett, close friends of mine, Sly Stone, Jim Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and I can go on and on and on, and I say all of them died because of drugs.”

According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, Womack was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and sang gospel music at a young age, performing with his brothers in The Womack Brothers. Under the influence of gospel and R&B legend Sam Cooke, who signed the group to his personal label, Womack moved into secular music. In the early 1960s his group recorded “It’s All Over Now,” which was covered and by the Stones and became the band’s first number-one hit.

His songs have been recorded by multiple artists, and he played as a session musician in Memphis in the 1960s.

Albarn and XL Recordings president Richard Russell helped Womack regain his career with 2012 comeback album “The Bravest Man in the Universe.” The album was a departure for Womack, full of electronic music and beats. But it was lauded by critics for a simple reason: That distinctive voice of his still brought chills.

“I don’t think he ever really thought that he would do anything again,” Albarn said of Womack in March. “Watching his rehabilitation and watching his ability to confront new material and new challenges was nothing short of miraculous at the time, and he still today continues to battle his demons and his illness. But he’s a beautiful person and when he opens his mouth and that voice comes out, it is something that is somehow touched by God.”
