Real Brides Reveal: How I Would Do Over My Wedding Dress

For BRIDES, by Whitney C. Harris.

Your wedding dress is probably the most memorable piece of clothing you’ll ever put on (as an adult anyway). You wear it on one of the most important days of your life, and it’s a significant investment both emotionally and financially. So you want to make sure you get it right. Many brides often look back on their wedding dress and wish they could have a redo — whether it be a small element like an accessory or rethinking the whole thing. What else do women walking down the aisle wish they had known before picking out their dress? Here are 14 former brides who reveal what they might do differently.

“I would have gone simpler, lighter, and more classically elegant and choose an option in that category that is price-friendly. If I redid my gown, I would try on a couple of simple silk or satin A-lines and see how I feel versus going straight to the bigger and frillier dresses. The last thing I would want is not to be able to dance the night away.” —Natalie N.E., Philadelphia

“Looking back, I would have loved a dress that didn’t require so many alterations. I went a bit over my original budget and didn’t realize that I’d have to spend nearly $ 500 to add French bustles as well. I was able to cut costs by ordering a veil online and sticking to ballet flats, but that only helped so much.” —Meghan E., Richmond, Virginia

“If I could do it all over again, I would have gone with a 1960s bohemian/beatnik style, which was just ahead of trend when I was getting married six years ago and not easily found. Something with long sleeves and an open back for my early spring celebration would have been supercool but practical at the same time.” —Maggie N., Sleepy Hollow, New York

“I probably would’ve allowed for a smidge more breathing room or a bit more stretch, as my dress was very snug. I did want a form-fitting silhouette, but it would’ve been nice to not have to suck in all night!” —April H., Honolulu

“I wanted a classic style that wouldn’t look too dated in pictures and chose a strapless piece in ivory satin with a boned corset and slight detailing and gathering at the hip. I had purchased a dress to change into for the evening function, however I never used it as I wanted to keep my wedding dress on and keep the fairy tale going! In hindsight, I wish I had chosen something a bit more ornate and detailed had I known I was going to wear it all day and night. Something with delicate lace on the arms/shoulders or maybe a matching lace over shrug that I could have removed for the evening to make the dress appear different would have been nice. I would also go for a sleeker style that didn’t restrict my movement so much, as the train and skirt on my original dress was quite heavy and it was difficult to dance in!” —Charlotte F., Manchester, England

“I would love to have a wedding dress with cold shoulders and ruffles, two trends that have taken the fashion world by storm over the past year! If I had done it when I had gotten married two years ago, it might have looked less traditional and even tacky, but today, I can see how it would have made the gown so much more chic!” —Pratibha V., New York City

“I would have made sure I tied the corset tighter. As I bent over to fill the unity sand bottle (we had a beach wedding), the audience got a great view of my ‘chicken cutlets’! Oh, to have larger boobs… “ —Jenn W., New York City

“I strongly recommend brides choose something classic that will still be in style for many years to come and avoid trends. I got married in 1988, which was just a horrible year for fashion. My dress was plantation style—I wish I had chosen something more formfitting so years later I could look at pictures and see what a great body I had. But the worst thing was the veil. I chose a veil that was designed as a giant bow. So in all my pictures, which really are lovely, I have this giant bow on my head. Everyone who looks at my pictures just laughs, and for this reason I took down wedding pictures that were hanging in my house. It was a trend then, but I so regret it now.” —Paige E., Woodland Hills, California

“I still think about the dress that I tried on two years ago and let get away. The dress fit like a glove and had enough embellishment that a simple veil would’ve paired perfectly. At the time, it seemed above my budget but honestly might’ve been worth all the time I spent second-guessing my decision. Also, by the time I finished altering my ‘cheaper’ dress and buying its ornate veil, the price wasn’t that much less than the other. For the record, I loved my ‘second’ dress and so did my husband, but it didn’t compare to the Romona Keveza. My advice to brides: If you see something you absolutely love and can’t stop thinking about—and aren’t above pinching pennies if you have to—go for it. For most of us, it’s the one time to wear an amazing gown and feel like a princess.” —Lauren W., Memphis

A Dry Cleaner Lost This Bride’s 147-Year-Old-Wedding Dress. So She Turned To Facebook For Help.

Tess Newall’s wedding gown had extra sentimental value. Her dress is a delicate family heirloom her great-great-grandmother handmade more than a century earlier, in 1870.

Newall wore it to her June 2016 wedding in Scotland and took it to the dry cleaners in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, after the big day, and her joy suddenly turned to despair.

The business went into liquidation sometime after she dropped off her dress and before she was able to pick it up.

“After the wedding, we took the dress to the cleaners and were told it would take 10 weeks to dry clean,” Newall told the British news website Metro. “But then we didn’t hear from them for ages, so we went to have a look ourselves – and it was in liquidation.” The bride told The Huffington Post that she dropped off the dress in September, and was told to pick up her gown in December. In October, the shop liquidated and sold off the items of clothing in their care.

So she turned to Facebook, and posted a public message asking for anyone and everyone’s help.

“It seems that the dress was taken to be sold so it could be winging its way anywhere,” Newall wrote in a post that has been shared more than 300,000 times. “Please share this far and wide in case anyone stumbles across it! I realise there are far greater issues in the world but it means the world to us. More family memories need to be woven into its threads.”

The post struck a chord. Local news outlets picked up Newall’s story and posted her plea. A wedding planning website said it would organize a search of 1,000 bridal gown shops across the United Kingdom.

Due to Newall’s viral Facebook post, the dress was recovered within days after a landlord for the space saw the story. The gown was found left behind in the very shop the dry cleaners vacated, crumpled up on the floor.

The dress hadn’t even been cleaned, according to Newall’s post below.

Newall said her dress finally returned home on Monday. “We are just so thankful to safely have it back and so grateful to everyone as well,” she added.

Now it’s nothing but all smiles. Cue this level of happiness again:

Notes of a Retired Wedding Videographer: From Proposal to Reception; Lessons Learned from Brides and Grooms

Notes of a Retired Wedding Videographer: From Proposal to Reception; Lessons Learned from Brides and Grooms

Initially this book originated by way of a response to a reprehensible and professionally insulting article I stumbled across in a popular wedding magazine. I telephoned the editor and reviewed the article sentence by sentence with him regarding the inconsistencies and inaccuracies of a real-life wedding focusing specifically on the videography facet. By the end of our conversation, he asked me to commit these thoughts to paper for consideration and I did. The article with my amendments was first published in the Summer 2005 issue of Premier Bride Magazine. Inspired by this, I continued to expand and record my experiences and observations with the sole intent of offering an experienced, unique insight for all would-be newlyweds to consider. "Notes of a Retired Wedding Videographer" is intended to provide an entertaining and informative guide to help brides and grooms understand all that the camera captures throughout the wedding day as well as some frequently overlooked tips on how to ensure that the festivities recorded on video best capture the festivities occurring in live action at the time. Enjoy the most memorable insights based on actual first-hand experiences through the course of nearly 1000 completed wedding assignments during the last 11 years. Topics include observations and opinions regarding bridal logistics, wedding themes and color schemes, music/photographer/videographer selection, wedding within budget,7 tips for men in kilts, how to avoid becoming a victim of Murphy’s Law, and much more- all illustrated by real-life personal experiences from behind the camera.

What “Obligations” Do Brides and Grooms Have to Their Wedding Guests?

Mothers of brides and grooms can get really ridiculous sometimes when they’re trying to get their own way – but it gives me GREAT blog material! I recently received an “Ask Sandy” request from a Mother of the Groom who wanted me to explain to her son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law that they “have an obligation” to their wedding guests to stay at the destination for a few days after the wedding to entertain those who have travelled a great distance to celebrate with them.

The bride and groom want to depart for their honeymoon the morning after their wedding, and this MoG was hoping I’d tell her she’s totally right and that the bride and groom are being tacky “abandoning” their guests. But she’s wrong. Totally WRONG.

Brides and grooms at destination weddings (or anywhere else they choose to get married) have zero obligation to their wedding guests after the wedding reception is over. Sure, some may choose to have farewell brunches or other day-after events, but that’s totally their prerogative. If they just want to escape alone the next day, that’s perfectly acceptable too.

The Exception to the Rule: The only time a bride and groom can’t run away right after the wedding is if they’re DIYing the wedding and they are responsible for making sure cleanup and teardown happens after the wedding. It’s really one of the biggest things I did wrong in my own destination wedding planning. By departing the next day early, I stuck my mom with having to ship back all the leftover mess of my big day. She spent the couple of days of vacation she’d planned for herself dealing with the cleanup and teardown. So if you’re planning your own wedding, you have to stay long enough to clean up the mess you made, or you have to ask somebody, IN ADVANCE, to be responsible for all of that.

Let’s assume the bride and groom don’t have any DIY-type jobs to do after the wedding. In this case, traditionally they should wing away somewhere else, away from the guests, to spend their first week of married life together alone, enjoying only each other. Not all brides and grooms choose to honeymoon immediately following their destination wedding – in fact, it’s more and more common to delay it. But not because you feel like you have to stick around to play host and hostess to your out-of-town guests.

Brides and grooms do have some responsibilities regarding entertaining their guests. Most of it is just good manners, but let’s discuss five specific “obligations” you really do have:

1. Provide good information and directions to all of your wedding events.
If transportation is provided, tell them when and where to be. Maps can be very helpful if you have a lot of out-of-town guests. If you’re getting married someplace most people have never been, additional information about the location, shopping and activities in the welcome packet is appreciated. Make sure the info on your wedding website actually matches the schedule of events you’ve presented your guests so you don’t confuse people and have guests miss the actual ceremony.

2. Show up on time to each and every wedding event you host. Most of your guests will be on time and it’s rude to make them stand around waiting for you, even with a cocktail in hand. For welcome parties this is especially important if you have some guests who don’t know any of the other guests. It’s your job to introduce your guests to one another and greet all of them.

3. Talk to every one of your guests at every event. Even if you’re not excited about some of your parents’ friends who are there, they are attending in your honor and you are obligated to show enthusiasm and chat with them an appropriate amount. They are still YOUR GUESTS, regardless of whomever put them on the invitation list.

4. Plan something special with your out-of-town guests if you’re getting married at home so that you get to spend some real time with them. Many traditional at-home weddings only include a rehearsal dinner in addition to the wedding day festivities. If you have extended family you never see coming to town, a family get-together with your fiancé’s family might be something to consider adding. If your sorority sisters are together for the first time in 15 years, a lunch might be fun. Make an effort to plan something that allows you more time than the quick hug and 20 seconds of chat time you’ll realistically have at the actual wedding reception.

5. Thank and say goodbye to each and every guest at your wedding reception. It’s easy to get bogged down in a group of your closest besties, but it’s important to remember that everyone at your wedding deserves acknowledgment and thanks when the main event is finished. Don’t disappear quickly after the last dance to change dresses for your after-party – you have to say goodbye to all of the older guests who might not be planning to head out to the bar with you til the wee hours. Only after you have said goodbye to each guest can you make your escape.

At that point, you can go out and party with your friends, or leave on a honeymoon, or do anything else you like. You have no more “obligations” to your guests. If you’ve planned a day-after event, you have to drag your butt out of bed and look presentable and attend because IT’S A PARTY FOR YOU. But you helped plan it and you know it’s happening so a hangover is no excuse. The guests of honor must be there, even if it’s only to get a mimosa as quickly as possible.

If you do not want to have a day-after event, make that clear to both sets of your parents at the outset so that they don’t plan something you don’t want to attend. That doesn’t mean that your mom might not still host her besties for a breakfast, but it won’t be something they’re expecting the bride and groom to attend so there’s no letdown factor when you don’t show.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the responsibility you have after the wedding to write thank you notes in a timely manner. Some people say it’s alright to wait six months but I disagree. Most people will have given you an envelope or sent the gift via online registry, and until they receive an acknowledgment of the gift, they worry you didn’t receive it. This is especially important for monetary gifts given during the wedding festivities, but really, everyone wants to know you got their wedding present. Make the time to write the notes as fast as you can after you get back to real life. And if you can’t get them all written well and quickly, pop off a few emails to let folks know you did receive their gift and will be sending a note but you didn’t want them to worry about whether it had arrived. And then write the note anyway, even if they tell you it’s unnecessary. It’s totally necessary.

I love it when the questions people send me inspire fun blogs like this one. It was a good question – I just doubt the Mother of the Groom was pleased with my answer.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

How To Make DIY Flower Crowns, Because They Aren’t Just For Brides And Hippies Anymore

diy

There are certain music festival trends that we hope never make the transition to mainstream (read: all-fringe everything), but there are others we welcome with open arms. Take the flower crown, for instance, which was once exclusively the territory of bohemian brides and hippie flower children. It’s now become a summer staple (thanks, Beyoncé!).

It’s for good reason: The flower crown looks good on everyone, complements any hair style (including bad hair days), smells delightful, and looks just at home on the beach as it does at a bachelorette party or baby shower. But the best thing about flower crowns has to be that you can make them yourself — really, it’s surprisingly easy and cheap to string something together. You can have customizable headgear all summer long.

In Hawaii, flower crowns are known as haku lei — just another version of the traditional lei. Women rock them at the beach for no particular reason, or make them for friends and loved ones on special occasions. They’re so ubiquitous and popular that Honolulu-based flower shop Paiko hosts a DIY flower crown workshop three times a week.

The women at Paiko have become experts on the process, and graciously shared the below tips so we can all blossom into summer with the freshest of trends.

5 Expectations Brides and Grooms Should Have of Their Wedding Planners and Vendors

Wedding planning is an art form. No really, it is. A good wedding planner not only has to have good business sense and excellent organizational skills, but she also has to be able to see the brides’ and grooms’ visions for their perfect days and know how to execute them. Experienced professional wedding planners know exactly what they’re doing and have planned for every contingency.

No matter what you’ve seen on reality television wedding shows or in the movies, wedding planning at its core is not glamorous. It’s a lot of lists and details, followed by blood (setups can be rough), sweat (try setting up a wedding on a beach in August) and tears (hopefully happy ones from the bride, but not always).

Unfortunately, in this day and age, it’s easy for anybody to call themselves a wedding planner by putting up a website (usually featuring somebody else’s pictures) and promoting their business on social media. For brides and grooms who don’t do their homework before hiring these people, it can be a really disastrous situation. Frankly, you’re better off DIYing your wedding than hiring a bad wedding planner, or one without enough experience to execute your vision on your wedding day. Claiming to be a “certified wedding planner” means exactly nothing. They offer certifications courses online for $ 29.99.

I have heard some really bad wedding planner stories from brides and vendors that I work with, and truth be told, it always makes me cringe. One bad actor reflects on the entire industry and it’s important to realize that the horror stories you may hear are not representative of wedding planners across the board.

There are some basic guidelines that should apply to all professional wedding planning staff and most vendors – when these things don’t happen or aren’t what they should be, the bride and groom can be in for some seriously ugly surprises. Here are five examples of what should and should not happen when you’ve hired a professional:

1. Wedding planners should be available to the bride and groom from dawn til the whole event is over on the wedding day – they should never be MIA. I know of planners who have their own hair and makeup done for every wedding and I’ve never understood where they find the time for that. If we’re not working on the actual décor and setup, we’re supervising all the other vendors as they arrive at the venue. We run home to shower and make ourselves look like professionals and then return back to the venue hours ahead of the wedding to finish all the little details. Sometimes we have to bring a change of clothes if the venue is remote. But no matter where we are or what we’re doing, if we’re not within yelling distance of our clients, they can always reach at least two of us by phone or text. I’ve done flowers for brides who used other planners and the brides were calling me hysterical on the day of the wedding because they couldn’t find the planner they’d hired. I can’t do anything to help at that point because it would be completely unprofessional to show up and run somebody else’s event. But I always wonder how these planners thought they were going to get away with being unavailable to a bride at any point on her wedding day.

2. Event staff are not wedding guests, and they shouldn’t be flirting with the guests, dancing the night away, or drinking alcohol. I know that a lot of my colleagues in the industry believe it is okay to drink and be merry after the ceremony is over with, but I disagree completely. The drama and problems usually occur late into the event after everybody has been drinking for an extended period of time. That’s when a wedding planner really has to have their A-game going so they can troubleshoot and do as much damage control as possible when nobody else is sober enough to be the adult. It’s also not okay for the caterers to be drinking in the kitchen (violates most insurance policies too, I’d imagine), it’s not okay for the DJ to be slugging back cocktails while he spins, and it’s not okay for the bartenders or servers to do shots with the guests. This is one time when it’s really not alright to “buy a shot” for the guy pouring your drinks unless you want to get him fired.

3. Wedding planning staff and vendors get fed last at all events. That’s just the rules because the caterer has to be sure to have enough of everything for the guests and sometimes people change their orders at the last minute. Whether it’s a “staff meal” or the couple have paid to feed the planning team the same food as the guests, we always eat after everybody else has been fed. I recently heard a story about a diva wedding planner visiting our island who insisted she and some of the vendors be fed a special meal BEFORE the guests were fed. That isn’t how it works and the caterers were moving 100 mph pushing out plates to a very large group of wedding guests. But she was insistent. Interesting priorities, huh?

4. Appropriate professional attire is always required at wedding events. Depending on the event, what’s appropriate might change. For example, we wear uniform shirts with shorts and flip flops to run beach parties because all of the guests are in bathing suits. Wedding vendors (planners, photographers, etc.) should NOT match the wedding party or the wedding theme colors on the big day. Sometimes it happens by accident, and there are some little touches that are cute – like when the planning team all paints our fingernails to match the bride’s signature color. Occasionally, the bride has asked us all to wear a certain color and we respect her wishes if we have those clothes. When it’s a “white wedding,” we all wear white. 2015-05-18-1431976721-5638731-WIVcrewinwhite.jpg But overall, we’re supposed to blend into the background when we’re doing our jobs. Some wedding pros believe head-to-toe black is most appropriate, and that’s true in major cities. But it would look weird here in the Caribbean where nobody is wearing all black because of the temperatures. Use your judgment and match the type of attire without matching the color scheme. People who are not supposed to stand out in everybody else’s pictures (such as photographers and videographers) should not be wearing super-bright colors or vivid patterns. More importantly, never under-dress to work a wedding event. When in doubt, step it up, don’t go more casual.

5. Unless otherwise specified, wedding planners are responsible for making sure that all of the wedding events have the proper permits and permissions, and that the event follows the rules of the venue where it’s being held. If the music has to be shut off by 11 o’clock, and the event completed by midnight, it’s the planning team’s job to make that happen. Venues are often located in hotels or private homes that are close enough to other properties for the music and party noise to really bother people late at night. If you’re getting married at a landmark or on a beach, you probably need a permit of some kind. The planner should have all the permits in hand and be knowledgeable about the rules and prepared to enforce them. More than once, I’ve pissed off guests and even clients because I wasn’t willing to put my company’s name and reputation on the line to break the law so they could do something stupid like set off Asian fire lanterns or dig a fire pit on a beach where endangered turtles have been nesting.

It’s one thing to play at being a wedding planner, but when the chips are down and the wedding day arrives, clients expect their event coordinator to know what he or she is doing and be available to them for anything and everything. Don’t get into this business because you think it’s glitz and glam because that’s only on television and in the movies. Real wedding planners stay up late working and get up early to set up events. They take ridiculous calls from clients at odd hours and find a way to make themselves available when needed.

I always tell brides and grooms who want to DIY their weddings to think of it as taking on a part-time job – because really, that’s what it is – and make sure they have time for that second job before they get overcommitted. It isn’t that everyone who hires a wedding planner couldn’t plan their own wedding, many don’t have the time or resources to do it. But when you hire a professional to run the trains for you on your big day, you should expect them to be professional from beginning to end, and to have their ducks in a row. That’s what you hired them for so you could relax and be the guests of honor at your own wedding.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

Back to Tradition – The Classic Guide for Modern Brides Who Want a Unique and Memorable Wedding

It Will Be the Best Day or Your Life. .or the Most Embarrassing!” As a bride-to-be you want a wedding day that is both special and memorable. You’ve been waiting for this all your life and it needs to be perfect. If you’ve been planning your wedding and wondered what was missing, this book has the answer! I want you think back to when you were a little girl. Do you remember looking at photographs from your grandmother’s wedding? Perhaps some really old photographs from her mother’s wedding? What were these weddings like? Were they simple? Formal? Regardless of the “style” of wedding, I can tell you something that weddings from this time did have. Elegance. If you look at photographs of most modern weddings, you may see expensive gowns or fancy locations, but you don’t see the elegance. That’s something you can’t buy. Elegance is free. This book will help you to bring back the elegance and sophistication of weddings of the past. Mixing these classic wedding elements with the modern aspects of current weddings will enable you to create a one-of-a-kind event that will leave guests talking for years and be a monument to the love you feel for your soon-to-be husband. Eleanor Kennedy has been a wedding planner for over 40 years and successfully organized thousands of wedding and special events. She lives with her husband in La Jolla, California.
