How To Plan Your Spectacular Sparkler Farewell (Without Burning Anyone)

Everyone wants a dreamy wedding photo like this, right?

“100+ intoxicated guests, layers of flammable tulle and fire; what could possibly go wrong?” says Kiera of Kiera Blanden Events + Styling.

She has witnessed firsthand what happens when sparkler exits go bad (think: Michael Jackson in that Pepsi commercial – ouch!)

So when I approached Kiera for some info on how to recreate one of the hottest (no pun intended) trends for your wedding, she was happy to share her checklist with Unbridely.

Thanks Kiera!

DOWNLOAD MY SPARKLER FAREWELL CHECKLIST FROM UNBRIDELY

1) Ask your venue first

While some wedding venues are usually pretty happy for your guests to light it up (so to speak..) at the end of the night, there are others that ban the use of sparklers entirely. If your venue has had a bad experience previously or don’t have an outdoor option, the answer might be no.

2) Check with your local fire service about seasonal and daily fire bans

In the U.S. you can check out state fire restrictions at: firerestrictions.us

In Australia, the local Country Fire Service (SA), Rural Fire Service (NSW), Country Fire Authority (VIC), Fire and Emergency Services (QLD), Fire and Rescue Service (NT), Fire Service (TAS), Fire and Rescue (ACT) and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (WA) should be your primary source of information about fire bans.

3) Let your suppliers know what you want

In order to capture the memories of your whimsical sparkler exit forever, your photographer and videographer need to be told well in advance. They can then prepare to be in the right position with the right lens at the right time.

Your photographer might also have past experience and be able to guide you with suggestions about artful and original poses to maximise the moment.

4) Choose ‘Team Sparkle’ carefully

You will need to nominate one sparkler exit helper for every 25 guests or so. And, although it may seem obvious in the cold, hard light of day, keep in mind that you want your most responsible, tea-totalling, designated-driver type family or friends to be on duty when everyone else is tipsy at the end of the evening.

They will be handing out one sparkler to each of your guests (multiple sparklers per person increase the likelihood of burns) and helping them to assemble in a guard of honour formation. Standing approximately 2 metres apart is a good guide – the sparklers held on each side of the path shouldn’t be able to touch.

When your MC or DJ gives the cue, your helpers will then carefully light your path!

5) Get your kit together

Once you have permission from your venue, it’s okay with the firies, your photographer and videographer are on board and you’ve assembled your crack team, the next step is to make the process virtually foolproof by being prepared.

You will need:

  • long handled (42cm or 70cm) sparklers that have a burn time of around 2-3 minutes – 1 per guest,
  • gas stick firelighters – 1 for each sparkler exit helper,
  • buckets of sand to put the burnt sparklers in – approx 1 for every 25 guests (in Kiera’s experience,  venue owners aren’t too thrilled about finding exhausted sparkler handles in their gardens, in the pond, pot plants or on the roof the morning after),
  • buckets of water or a hose stretched out and ready to go, and
  • if you’re not at a venue (like on a private property in a marquee, for example), have a first aid kit on hand.

6) Delegate and communicate

The quickest and least confusing way to let your guests know where they are needed at the appropriate time is to delegate the responsibility to your MC or DJ. It can also help to have a sign next to or on the container that holds your sparklers and to include the exit time on any programs or wedding day timeline signage.

Generally, it is best practice for your MC/DJ to ask your guests to:

  • put their drinks down first
  • ensure that all children are kept well clear of the guard of honour and don’t have access to the gas lighters, and
  • hold ‘em high and not across the guard of honour (this protects your hair sprayed ‘do’ or flower crown from getting singed and keeps your photographer/videographer safe from burns).

And if you’re wearing a veil, make sure that you take it off before you walk through.

Then all that’s left is to enjoy the magic as it unfolds!

New Musical Shines Light On ‘Paris Is Burning’ Star And The Mummified Man Found In Her Closet

For over a year before it premiered this past weekend at the Rep Stage regional theatre outside Baltimore, the musical “Dorian’s Closet” was sparking buzz in the media, from Out magazine and the LGBT press to the Baltimore Sun and theater journals. Playwright Richard Mailman, who wrote the book and lyrics, fielded interviews while the show was in rehearsals over those long months, awaiting its debut.

The intense interest isn’t at all surprising. With music by Ryan Hasse and directed by Joseph W. Ritsch, “Dorian’s Closet” is based on the life of Dorian Corey, a prominent subject of Jennie Livingston’s groundbreaking 1990 documentary film, “Paris Is Burning,” about the remarkable Harlem drag balls of the 1980s and the powerfully-bonded community of black and Latino gay and trans people who created them. “Dorian’s Closet” has all of the glamour and the sequin ball gowns and the show-stopping numbers one would expect, relaying the story of a legendary figure on the Harlem ball scene who became internationally famous as a star in the beloved documentary.

Corey, who used female pronouns and was the “mother” of the House of Corey, succumbed to AIDS in 1993. Soon after, her notoriety shot even higher, when police found a mummy in the closet of her Harlem apartment ― a dead, preserved body of a man who was killed by a gunshot wound, likely 15 years earlier. “Dorian’s Closet,” via musical numbers performed by a grippingly talented cast, follows that story, taking us first back to Corey’s early years in Manhattan. Mailman, who’s worked on many stage and television productions ― but for whom this is his first musical ― discussed the show, the storyline and and where it’s all going, in an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress. This is an edited version of that conversation.

Michelangelo Signorile:  Looking at Dorian Corey’s story, what made you decide, ‘This would be a great musical’?
Richard Mailman: Why wouldn’t a mummy in the closet make the best musical ever? [Laughter] You know, all those years ago when I saw “Paris is Burning,” it screamed out to be a musical. Obviously this isn’t a musical version of “Paris is Burning.” But just the whole world ― the balls, the drag queens, their performing, that’s definitely ripe for a musical. But I was always a fan of theatrical backstage stories. There’s totally that element of Dorian’s career ― how she ended up in New York, working at [the drag bar] Sal’s in Times Square, and in the Harlem balls. But throw in what they found in the closet after she left it there and, you know, that’s a fabulous number! When I first saw the movie, I was totally intrigued by her.

She was the mother of the House of Corey. These were [queer] families [of choice], these houses [which competed in runway walking and voguing against one another at the balls].
There’s all of those elements as well [in “Dorian’s Closet”]. The stories of all of those children ― a lot of them tragic ― that were part of those houses and hers… just what was going on in New York at that time and around that community. I really think that right now, especially with what’s going on politically in the world right now, particularly in this country ― obviously we’ve taken a real slide backward. But I think in a way the story now becomes even more important ― for people to remember what we went through and the struggle we went through. And do we really want to go back there? There’s a lot of that in there too.

For over a year before it premiered, the show was getting this incredible buzz and it just keeps increasing and increasing right up to today. You’ve been doing interviews for about a year.
A lot of that has to do with the fact that people know “Paris Is Burning.” I think we’ve forgotten about how much of an impact that movie had. For a small documentary, how many people remember it. And it still holds up well. It’s still relevant. People remember Dorian. About a year ago when Rep Stage announced their season, and we were included in that, word got out and it just exploded. When people heard about it, they went crazy about it. It made me nervous at first. But it really made me feel good. I started getting so many emails from people who remember Dorian and really, really wanted to see her story told. I should preface the whole thing by saying it is somewhat a fictional account of her life because there’s a lot we don’t know.

There’s a lot we don’t know about the man she purportedly killed and mummified and put in the closet. Was it a boyfriend? Was it a robber? Was it both ― a scammer? There are so many different theories that are out there about what transpired. You had to take [one] narrative and run with it.
The scary part was not knowing the truth. But there was a moment when I realized that the story we really wanted to tell was not so much who he was and how it happened. But how someone could keep a body in their closet for over 15 years and what would make a person do that. By the time you get to the end of the story you understand what these people were going through and what they were faced with.

Stephen Scott Wormley, who plays Dorian Corey is spectacular and James Thomas Frisbee, who plays Jesse Torres, another drag performer, is also amazing.
Doing a musical is not easy. Getting even just a small production out there is very difficult and takes a long time and there are a lot of elements involved. This show rests really on Dorian’s shoulders. During almost the entire show she’s onstage. So you’ve got to have a performer not only who can carry that vocally but also who can create this character that people can fall in love with. And I have to say, this [past] weekend [audiences] took to him ― it was amazing. He does a beautiful job with [Dorian].

It has already received some great reviews after the premiere. That’s got to feel good.
It feels really, really good. You kind of lose perspective. You’re locked in a theater, trying to bring it together. You don’t know how it will fly with people. But it was kind of amazing [opening night]. All of a sudden it hit me ― they’re really, really getting it. The thing that I’m just so thrilled about more than anything is that people are walking out, feeling really [good.] This is not a happy story ―

No, but it is kind of uplifting at the end.
When I first saw Dorian, there was something about her ― to quote a song in the show. She does have this optimistic outlook in life.

Where does the show [performed at Rep Stage in Maryland until May 14] go from here?
From everything that everyone’s been saying to us, they really feel there’s a way bigger life for this show. It could happen any number of ways. I’m ready for whatever anyone what’s to do with it. I’m ready.

Hilarious Black Dude Answers White People’s Most Burning Questions

“Have you ever had a question you wanted to ask the one black friend that you know, but refrained because you didn’t want to run the risk of sounding racist?”

That’s the question Gabriel Green asked at the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational finals  in March. Green, a student at Eastern Michigan University, gives hilarious responses to common mysteries he assumes white people are dying to solve. For example, why are black people so good at basketball?

His explanations are funny, but also serve to demystify the black experience for his white peers.

On his list of questions is, “Do black people hate all white people?” to which Green says, “Of course we don’t, we just hate the people who perpetuate or refuse to acknowledge the history of social, political, and racial f**kery placed against us.”

And yes, Green reminds white audience members, if you have to ask if something is racist… it is.

The competition included several other talented poets that performed pieces about the challenges of black experience. Head over to Button Poetry to watch those.

We Should Build A Wall That Keeps Burning Man Attendees From Coming Home

What separates the burning men from the burning boys, is really nothing, because they’re all awful. This is why we should seriously consider Cultivated Wit’s new proposal to raise $ 7.3 billion to build a wall that’d prevent Burning Man attendees from returning home.

Perhaps it would be too intense to burn not just the Burning Man man, but also burn all the burning men, so a wall seems like a justified response to the annual wildfire that will continue to rage in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert near the California border starting August 30.

Make Smokey Bear proud and prevent this fire from ever happening again. The proposed wall may only appear to save San Francisco. The wall may also put the rest of the country at risk as burning families are forced to move into new neighborhoods outside of the Bay Area. But California is in drought, and we must band together as a nation to help our fellow Americans overcome this crisis. Sometimes you’ve got to fight fire with over seven billion dollars of concrete.

How to Be a Lesbian: Our Burning Questions Answered

2015-02-05-SneakersonaPier3.jpg

I’ve been learning how to be a lesbian lately, because my boyfriend and I opened our relationship last year.

“Open relationship,” for us, means we’re still committed to each other but also date other people. So I get to be a lesbian sometimes, and he gets to be, um, the same. But with more sex.

Ten productive months into being a sometimes-lesbian, I still have a lot of questions. So I reached out to Natashia Mower, this lesbian I know personally,* to set me, well, gay, I guess.

Dana: Where can I find the best vests? Is there a special store online?

Natashia: You don’t actually find the best vests; the best vests find you. Be patient; it’ll happen. My favorite vest didn’t find me until I had been out of the closet for almost six years. (Things would’ve been so much easier if the vest had been in the closet I came out of.)

Dana: How short does my hair have to be before they’ll know I’m gay? What styles read “bicurious”?

Natashia: This is heavily debated in the gay community, so I can only give you my personal opinion. Sideburns are tricky and will most likely indicate “straight” or “bicurious.” Trust me; I’ve been side-burned too many times thinking a girl was gay just because she had short hair with sideburns. In my experience, the best method to ensure your hair clearly defines your sexuality is to find a photograph of your father from the late ’70s and go with whatever haircut he had at the time.

Dana: Can my dog be any kind of mutt, or does it have to be a purebred German shepherd?

Natashia: You won’t be kicked out of the lesbians if you have a mutt; we find any breed or mix of breeds acceptable. German shepherds are only so common amongst gay women because they’re like the lesbians of dogs: loyal, capable and they look great in vests. Again, German shepherds aren’t a requirement. It is preferred that you at least have a pet of some kind: dog, cat, gerbil, ant farm, algae, etc. For the record, ferrets are very in right now.

Dana: Is there a class I can take on “EDM for Introverts,” or is that something you just learn from the other lesbians?

Natashia: Well, I hope there’s a class, because I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about right now. I guess I’m just too busy being home alone, avoiding everyone and everything. By the way, can you recommend any good music?

Dana: What is the easiest way to locate my nearest Whole Foods?

Natashia: Get yourself a GPS (gay-positioning system) off of Amazon, $ 35. It will point you towards the nearest Whole Foods, Lady Foot Locker and the renovated garage where my ex-girlfriend Trinity grooms homeless dogs.

Dana: Is there a cheaper version of Birkenstocks? (How is a barista supposed to afford those?)

Natashia: Stirkenbocks, found at Payless, Shoe Carnival and some farmer’s markets. They are very uncomfortable. Stirkenbocks!

Dana: How long into a first date should I wait to give her a key to my apartment?

Natashia: Immediately, if not before the date. If that’s too fast for you, judge based on how the date is going. For example, if the date is going well, give her the key right before you order your food. You may have a love-at-first-sight scenario, in which case you will want to have come prepared with what’s referred to as a “bouquet of keys” (a key ring with a copy of every key you have), a romantic tradition started by lesbian janitors.

Dana: Tofu, tempei, seitan: Which really tastes like chicken?

Natashia: This is a common misconception wherein people confuse gay women with people who have money. I don’t have money. Is the answer chicken? Chicken tastes like chicken.

Dana: So that I’m not lost in a conversation, what are some of the must-know fanfic sites?

Natashia: FictionElle, FictionEllen and FictionL-Word are the three most popular and are currently part of various lawsuits against each other, for obvious reasons.

Dana: How many bumper stickers is too many — or too few?

Natashia: Quality over quantity, I say. If you pull up to a coffee shop or lesbian bar in a Subaru that is plastered in a variety of bumper stickers, the only thing it will say about you is that you couldn’t afford a new paint job. Think very carefully about your personal values, opinions and which secondhand bookstore you most want to advertise for.

Dana: Are there great trails for hiking anywhere in the U.S., or do I need to move west to be a lesbian?

Natashia: When you’re a lesbian, you can hike anywhere. As long as you’re a homosexual lady walking outside, it counts. It’s called dykeing.

Dana: Now that I’m a lesbian, will I still get into Heaven — sorry, Sheaven?

Natashia: As long as you never renounce your lesbianism and never murder anyone, you will most likely get into Sheaven. Heaven, on the other hand, isn’t a real place.

*No we’re not sleeping together. But you’re right; that would be hot.

Oakland’s New Mayor Has Been Driving Around Town In A Giant Burning Man Snail Car

Libby Schaaf may very well be the first mayor of a major American city to ride around town in a flame-shooting Burning Man art car shaped like a giant snail. She notes that she may also be the only mayor of a major American city to have gone to Burning Man.

“To be fair, I went a long, long time ago,” she told The Huffington Post of her visit to the annual celebration of art and creative expression in the Nevada desert. “But the Burning Man community is a complete asset to the larger Oakland community.”

Voters in Oakland, California, elected Schaaf to the Bay Area city’s highest office in November. As part of her victory lap, she drove the snail car, the brainchild of local artist and blacksmith Jon Sarriugarte, through the streets to meet with constituents. On Monday, she drove her husband and two children to her inaugural ceremony downtown in the same mutant vehicle.

snail 4

Schaaf arrives at her inauguration with her family at Oakland’s Paramount Theater on January 5.

And this Sunday, the snail will be out and about in all its fiery glory at Schaaf’s inaugural festival, which also features a parade of other Burning Man art cars along with fire dancers, musicians and food and drink purveyors — all of whom call Oakland home.

“It’s not your daddy’s inaugural ball,” Schaaf, a lifelong Oakland resident and graduate of the city’s public school system, said with a laugh.

Sarriugarte told HuffPost he’s been a longtime Schaaf supporter, having first met her while she was serving as an Oakland city councilwoman a handful of years ago. He volunteered for several mayoral campaign events, using the snail car as a conversation piece to attract voters.

“We would hold signs out on the street right next to a giant snail car shooting fire out of it,” he said. “I joked that if she won, we should drive her around in it.” Team Schaaf didn’t take it as a joke.

snail 2

Schaaf with Sarriugarte.

One of the reasons Sarriugarte is such a fan of the mayor, he said, is because of her pledge to reinforce Oakland’s burgeoning community of artists and “makers.” “We have a wonderful make community,” he said. “I want to see industrial areas set aside for making and producing things … [Schaaf] is really good at taking feedback from the community.”

For her part, Schaaf said she pledges to build programs that foster the growth of local arts institutions, without pursuing developments that grow to be so big they eventually get pushed out. “What makes Oakland Oakland is our diversity and our incredible arts scene,” she said. “Our gritty industrial flavor, as well as our long history of embracing social movements. We are an incredibly creative place.”

Schaaf noted that one of her final initiatives as a councilwoman was to champion a law that requires private developers in Oakland give 1 percent of their project costs to benefit the public arts sector. The money helps create performance arts spaces, galleries and installations. And with nearby San Francisco becoming more unaffordable by the minute, many developers are looking toward Oakland as their next frontier.

snail 3

Schaaf and her family greet supporters.

But Schaaf says it’s essential not to let new developments squeeze out the existing communities that make her city unique. “I’m very aware that we cannot sell our soul for growth,” she said. “Part of that soul is our artist community. That balance of growth and revitalization but preserving our Oaklandishness — our secret sauce — that’s an acute awareness I bring to this position.”

Bitter Beer and Burning Whisky: An Interview With Musician Jeremy Mage

2015-01-04-May19.04JeremyMage0211.jpg

With the release of his latest music video, psychedelic singer-songwriter Jeremy Mage offers up a year-end toast to the “hell of a year” of 2014. Featuring Reggie Watts (incoming house band leader for CBS’s The Late, Late Show) on background vocals, and a host of Hungarian shoe puppets, Waste This Year is a darkly comic, commercially successful poke in the eye to unbridled avarice.

Recently I chatted with the Grammy award-winning Mage about his latest musical endeavor.

Stroud: You describe Waste This Year as a “wounded but not dead, apocalyptic but hopeful goodbye to 2014.” Why?

Mage: A lot of things came to a head in America this year. Somehow the combination of social media, a rollercoaster global economy, and very real racial tensions — combined with having a black President — seems to have brought up a lot of the divisions in America. Stuff is coming to a head and a lot of people are feeling even though we’re more connected, we’re more apart than we’ve ever been. Although I don’t know if that perception is actually true, because I think that it’s just easier to encounter the people that we disagree with now.

Stroud: What inspired you to write this song?

Mage: The melody came first and it just came with those words. Then I had to write backwards and figure out what I was talking about. Because I’m not a nihilistic person, I had to figure out what could it mean, how Waste This Year could actually be a positive thing. So I ended up writing a drinking song, basically a toast and a little bit of throwing up hands, about making a difference. But at the same time, it’s a call to community and recognition of a common enemy.

Stroud: Who’s the enemy?

Mage: In the song, the enemy is greed – greed and social control. I imagine some kind of pub in a mining town, maybe in a Road Warrior future, and this is what they’re singing. They can’t outright call the masters to task, but they can sing and the subversive content is bubbling underneath.

Stroud: What’s your favorite line in the lyrics?

Mage: I guess “fill my veins with pomegranate wine” is one of my favorites, or “the winking dollar casts his eye on everything.” When I’m singing it live, my favorite line is “If you know the enemy, you’ll recognize your friends” because it lets me look out at the audience and indicate to them that I consider them, in that moment, my friends.

Stroud: Comedian and musician Reggie Watts sings background vocals. How did he become involved?

Mage: An artist that I work with, [Afro-beat queen] Wunmi, brought me on tour to Australia. We did that country’s biggest festival circuit, which is The Big Day Out. It’s amazing — hundreds of bands from Indie rockers all the way up to the biggest global names. We were on what’s called the Lily World stage. Reggie Watts was one of the other acts, so we got to spend quite a bit of time together. He’s a genius, just as funny off-stage as he is on, but also very tenderhearted and very considerate with a lot of humility.

We ended up going to an after party, really late at night, and finished in my hotel room. It was about 3:00 in the morning. Reggie led the others in singing Waste This Year. I got a great take that ended up being in the final mix.

Stroud: What’s next for you?

Mage: I’m supporting my record on Tummy Touch, which is Jeremy Mage and the Magi, self-titled. Waste This Year is one of the tracks and it has been a really successful single in Europe, where it’s been getting a lot of play on the radio.

Stroud: Anything more you’d like to share with readers?

Mage: The spirit of the song, the reason I say “apocalyptic but hopeful,” is because that’s the kind of crossroad humanity is at right now. We’re facing some stark choices for our survival as a species on the planet. We stand on the precipice with one foot already hanging over, but I think that the spirit of community and sharing can ultimately triumph over greed.

Grover Norquist Reveals His Ultimate Burning Man Dream Team

Grover Norquist, the founder of Americans for Tax Reform, had a few interesting picks when he was asked who would be in his ultimate “fantasy” political lineup at Burning Man, the week-long counterculture festival that the conservative advocate attended this year.

In an interview with Fusion’s Cleo Stiller to be aired Monday, Norquist said his dream team would consist of politicians who brought a mix bit of athletic, artistic and technical skills, including Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), because “he’s a surfer, he would be a natural in here.” He also would draft Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) because “he’s a high-tech guy.” The only non-Californian to make the cut was Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). According to Norquist, Paul “would be perfect. I think if he came out here, he’d carry the art vote.”

Burning Man occurs annually the week before Labor Day and is a celebration of art and self-reliance. The environmentally-friendly atmosphere in the Nevada desert is absent of trash cans, and participants take their garbage with them when they leave. This year an estimated 66,000 people from around the world attended the festival, according to the Associated Press.
