Oliver Peoples Fetes ‘California as We See It’ With Lisa Eisner

A clutch of bespectacled Angelenos joined luxury eyewear brand Oliver Peoples on Thursday to fete the launch of the Assouline tome “California as We See It.” Cohosted by photographer and Los Angeles style arbiter Lisa Eisner, who penned the book’s foreword, the party drew Shaun Ross, Levi Dylan, William Peltz, Stormi Henley, Markus Molinari, Brad Elterman, Lorenza Izzo, Ivan Olita and Tasya van Ree, along with Oliver Peoples chief executive officer Rocco Basilico and creative director Giampiero Tagliaferri.
“Do you remember their first shop?” asked Eisner of the Sunset Plaza store a few blocks down the street. “It was right in the middle of all this history — George Hurrell’s studio, Billy Haines’ showroom, Adrian’s shop. Then there were all the rock clubs like The Whiskey a Go Go and The Roxy.” She also pointed out the pioneering retailer Charles Gallay — the first boutique in the U.S. to carry Azzedine Alaïa — and the location used for the apartment of Richard Gere’s character in “American Gigolo.”
“That’s sort of the area in which we played, and when I bought my first pair of Oliver Peoples in the Eighties, we were like this clique,” she said. Eisner has also photographed several campaigns

Three Victims of Deadly Hostage Shooting at a California Veterans Home Identified

The names of the three female victims of Friday’s deadly shooting at a Veterans home in Napa County, California, have been released by the coroner’s office.

Christine Loeber, 48, Dr. Jennifer Golick, 42, and Dr. Jennifer Gonzales, 29, were killed after an armed gunman entered a staff meeting at Yountville Veterans Home campus in Yountville — the largest veterans home in the country — and took hostages, CNN reported.

June Iljana, a spokesperson for the California Department of Veterans Affairs, confirmed to PEOPLE that all three women were staff of the Pathway Home, a non-profit at the Yountville Veterans Home. The facility provides mental health and case management services for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Iljana said.

Loeber was the Pathway Home’s executive director, while Golick and Gonzales were both psychologists — Golick a staff psychologist and Gonzales a clinical psychologist with the San Francisco Department of Veterans’ Affairs Healthcare System, ABC-7 reported.

“These brave women were accomplished professionals who dedicated their careers to serving our nation’s veterans, working closely with those in the greatest need of attention after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan,” The Pathway Home said in a statement to ABC-7 reported. “All of us at The Pathway Home are devastated by today’s events. We stand with the families, friends, and colleagues who share in this terrible loss.”

The gunman, who has been identified at Albert Wong, 36, was a former patient who had been treated at the Pathway Home, USA Today reported.

Shots from a rifle were first fired at about 10:20 a.m. in the dining room of the veterans home where Pathway employees were having cake for a going-away party for their coworkers leaving the job, CNN reported. The gunman took several hostages into one room before letting all but three escape.

After an 8-hour long standoff with police, he killed himself and three hostages, KCRA reported. Law enforcement officials found the bodies of three women and the gunman in a room inside the property.

Days before the shooting, Wong been asked to leave the program for unknown reasons, State Sen. Bill Dodd told the San Francisco Chronicle.

California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Chris Childs told the Associated Press it was “too early to say if were chosen at random.”

According to Napa County Sheriff John Robertson, police had “tried numerous times” to reach the Wong via his personal cell phone and the phones within the facility but could not reach him, The Mercury News reported.

Larry Kamer told the wire that his wife, Devereaux Smith was at a staff party and said the gunman had entered the facility and allowed multiple people to leave before taking others hostage.

The Pathway Home has helped more than 450 veterans cope with the effects of their deployments since opening its doors in 2008, its website states. The facility has a staff of 18 people.

One of it’s graduates, Adam Schumann, was the subject of the book, Thank You For Your Service, according to the home’s website. It was turned into a 2017 film starring actor Miles Teller.

California Governor Jerry Brown issued a statement after the shootings, saying, “Anne and I are deeply saddened by the horrible violence at the Yountville Veterans Home, which tragically took the lives of three people dedicated to serving our veterans. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones and the entire community of Yountville.”

He ordered flags at the capitol to be flown at half-staff in memory of the women, USA Today reported.

Most Shocking Photos of the California Wildfires That Have Killed at Least 10 and Injured Dozens

At least 10 people are dead and thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed after several wildfires continue to ravage California’s wine country, reports say.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in several counties as the fires, which began on Sunday, swept through Northern California and urged Donald Trump to declare an official state of disaster to support local relief efforts.

“In less than 24 hours, more than 18 fires began burning in at least seven counties and have collectively burned more than 80,000 acres,” Brown wrote in a statement.

The flames broke out nearly all at once as residents fled the high-end region. The fires worsened overnight.

“I can’t shake hearing people scream in terror as the flames barreled down on us,” Noah Lowry, a former San Francisco Giants pitcher, told the Associated Press. Lowry said he fled his home with his wife, two daughters and 2-week-old son.

The fires continued well into Tuesday and Brown said that the flames grew so rapidly that residents had little time to leave their homes and flee to temporary shelters. He added that officials expect the number of deaths as a result of the fire to grow.

“Thousands have been made homeless. Many schools remain closed. Major roads were damaged or destroyed. The fire destroyed utility poles causing the loss of power to over 38,000 residents,” he wrote in the statement to Trump. “These fires have destroyed and continue to threaten critical infrastructure, including 80 communication towers, impacting essential services for thousands of people.”

Kim Hoe told the AP that he and his colleagues were staying at the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country when flames began to overtake the building.

“We just had to run and run,” he said. “It was full of smoke. We could barely breathe.”

Most of the damage was in Santa Rosa where the fires destroyed homes, melted the glass off of cars and turned wheels into liquid, according to the AP.

Photos of the devastation showed homes engulfed in flames and relief teams working to quell the fires. Pictures shared on Instagram showed flames on the horizon behind Disney California Adventure Park.

How Oprah Learned to Stop and Smell the Roses (Literally) at Her California Home: ‘This Garden Makes Me Present’

There are some old adages Oprah takes very seriously.

“I’ve done many interviews with people who had to lose what they had in order to value what they still have,” she tells Veranda in their September/October 30th Anniversary issue. “Sometimes I stand under the arbor, close my eyes, and allow myself to take in as much as I can: I hear birds splashing in the fountain and literally smell the roses. This garden makes me present.”

The TV mogul’s Santa Barbara home overlooking the Pacific Ocean is a world away from her Chicago base. And when she purchased the property in 2001, it’s 42 acres came with a steep learning curve.

“What did I know about a garden?” she says. “I would leave my apartment in the Water Tower in Chicago at 5:30 in the morning and come back at 8:30 at night, when it was dark.” When she found out the plot came with a designated area for a rose garden that was not yet designed, she says, “I thought, Oh boy, what am I going to do with that?”

As she would in any episode of her beloved show, she turned to the very best expert in the field: Dan Bifano, who’s designed gardens for Barbra Streisand and Tom Ford. Together they picked every bloom, structure and detail of the garden.

“I’m very hands-on,” she says. “I picked the gravel. I picked the grout between the stonework. I decided which way the roses would face. Love is in the details.”

Now, Oprah’s fully stepped into her gardening shoes. She joined a local club called Rose Buddies, and helped develop a new hybrid flower called Legends, in honor of her female African-American heroes.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux Bring their Laid-back California Style to the Streets of Paris

In many ways, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux are the quintessentially cool Californian couple. She has her effortlessly tousled and endlessly aped locks, perennially perfect golden tan, and deep and abiding passion for paddle boarding; he channels all of the bad boy charm and understated acting chops of James Dean with a collection of motorcycle jackets to prove it. And this week the pair are proving that California is more than just a state, it’s a state of mind, taking their particular bohemian joie de vivre to the chic streets of Paris.

The couple have been on a stylish tour of the City of Light all week, making one high fashion pitstop after the next, including an appearance at the exclusive Louis Vuitton dinner in honor of the brand’s latest handbag collaboration with artist Jeff Koons. But on Wednesday night they changed up the pace a bit, forsaking glamorous gatherings in favor of a quiet date night in the neighborhood of the Louvre, dining at wine bar Verjus.

From Coinage: Tips for Planning a Wedding on a Budget

RELATED PHOTOS: Jennifer Aniston Is PEOPLE’s 2016 World’s Most Beautiful Woman!

For their evening out, Jennifer and Justin took a break from the matchy-matchy style streak they’ve been having. The actress gave a slight twist on her typical collection of all-black dresses, mixing it up with a low-key maxi dress featuring a smattering of pink flowers all over, a knotted halter neckline, a low back, and a classy touch of exposed sideboob. Her husband, on the other hand, stayed true to his foolproof “winter from the waist down” fashion formula in a leather jacket, black t-shirt, and faded black jeans.

One other way Theroux switched things up? Rather than post a schmoopy Instagram with his girl as he had done several days prior, he posted a shot of the “Eifellas” (himself and The Leftovers creator Damon Lindelof) in front of the famed Paris landmark. But of course in Paris, there’s plenty of love to go around.

What do you think of Jen and Justin’s date night looks? Sound off below!

Strangely Compelling ‘Shybot’ Roams California Desert Avoiding Humans

A lone little robot roamed California’s Sonoran Desert for a week this month. Its only mission: Avoiding humans.

“Shybot” was part of a weirdly mesmerizing art project in early March. It was designed by the Italian artist Norma Jeane and engineers for the Desert X Biennial, which uses the “canvas” of the Coachella Valley in southern California and its desert landscape. It’s one of several projects ongoing through the end of April.

The rover’s camera streamed its experiences back to The Lab art gallery in San Francisco, which presented the work in collaboration with the city’s Italian Cultural Institute. The robot had no practical purpose. It traveled wherever it rolled, though assiduously avoided humans, and was forced to maneuver around obstacles too large for it to climb. Drones tracked its progress from the air — which Shybot at times appeared not to appreciate.

If you’re wondering what the point of the project was, whether it’s a comment on machine versus nature, or a study of a land without humans, the artist tried to clarify in a statement, calling it a “fantasy of the desert sublime.”

“The machine is let loose in the landscape, free of the human determinism that thus far framed its existence,” Jeane said. “And we, in turn, are free to imagine a world liberated from the indeterminacy of us.”

California Home Goods 3 Compartment Bento Reusable Food Storage Containers with Lids, Set of 10, For Meal Prep, 21 Day Fix

California Woman Inspires Teens All Over the World to Perform Acts of Kindness

Even though she had a privileged childhood, Gaby Ghorbani never got numb to the poverty surrounding her as a child growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico as she witnessed children begging or selling gum on the streets to put food on their tables.

“I would always give food away and when I got my driver’s license, I would see kids on the corner and I would ask “Are you hungry? Where is your Mommy?’ ” Ghorbani, 46, tells PEOPLE. “And they would say ‘Yes, I’m hungry. But I don’t know.’

” I would take them in my car to get something to eat and then drop them back off on the corner,” she says. “When I got caught, I got in so much trouble. My mother would get mad and say, ‘You can’t do that!’ And she would tell me I couldn’t help every one, so why even try?”

Undeterred, that drive to help others never abated, and when she immigrated to the United States when she was about 18, she began planting the seeds for  Pledge to Humanity, an organization she founded in 2009 that inspires youths to make a difference both locally and globally. Groups are formed through schools, sport clubs and service organizations and perform acts of kindness.

Thousands of students have participated in the program. She works with kids to make sandwiches to donate to shelters, takes kids to spend time with the elderly or severely disable children and she organizes them to assemble and collect hundreds of care packages for veterans and the homeless. The projects are seemingly endless, from helping underprivileged kids from neighboring schools to spay and neuter clinics.

Globally, the organization has built schools in Third World countries and volunteers can travel to the places they have supported to see the fruits of their labor. The organization is growing nationwide as volunteers go away to college and start their own programs.

“Our children here live in a bubble, where they have access to so much,” says Skye Larch, principal of Rancho Romero Elementary school in Alamo. “The power behind this is that it develops empathy and compassion in the most natural of ways. They learn small deeds really impact someone’s life and extends beyond them.”

Ghorbani married at 20 and has two sons, Arman, 24 and Jovani, 14, and a daughter Natalia, 20, who all share her passion for helping others. Ghorbani would take her young children with her to give out food and gift cards to the needy. When they ate at restaurants, she would order meals and give them to people outside. Every international trip included handing out gifts to people less fortunate.

“I would think, ‘My children will know how they need to be part of the change we need to be and to be giving, loving and grateful citizens of the world,” says Ghorbani, of Alamo, California.  “Out of all the things we do for our kids, the most important thing is to teach them to give of themselves.”

Ghorbani started taking some of her children’s friends with them on their outings to the tenderloin for many years. Although she was a successful entrepreneur and the wife of a prominent businessman, it wasn’t enough to fulfill her.

“Every day I thought, I would rather be helping in a soup kitchen,” she says. “I tell children what real success in life is not in monetary form, but being engaged in what is around you and caring for the needs of others without hesitation. Don’t do it as your good deed of the day, do it like breathing, because breathing is automatic and necessary.”

Ghorbani encourages students to “turn on their antennas” so they can locate people in need — from children who need a friend at school, to seniors who need help with their groceries. They sign a “kindness contract” to look for ways to help others.

One second grader who signed a contract excitedly told Ghorbani how he had told a friend on crutches that he would help him with whatever he needed.

“To go from that to global service is an attitude that ripples out,” she says.

Ghorbani says it all started with the intention of empowering children.

“I went to elementary schools and told them ‘You don’t know me and I don’t know you, but I know that you are capable and you have everything within you to make someone’s life better to be a blessing to someone else’ ” she says. “I told them, ‘You don’t have to be an adult. You don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to be famous or a super star or a sports star, to have an impact on someone today. Kids started listening and embraced that and it grew, grew, grew.”

One of those students was Kailey McKnight, 18, who says Ghorbani’s passion for helping other inspired her to start the San Ramon Valley High School club when she was just 14. The club has grown from about 10 members to more than 400. There are so many students wanting to participate that the club had to start a waiting list.

“I have a lot of friends I never thought would do community service and would never thought they would care about other people besides themselves,” says Kailey McKnight. “But they love doing it and keep signing up for more.”

Kailey’s mother Beth says she has never volunteered before becoming involved in Pledge to Humanity and now “she’s hooked.” “They say you can’t save everyone, but Gaby just might,” says Beth McKnight.

Jon Campopiano, principal at Stone Valley Middle School in Alamo, says Ghorbani’s son Jovani started a buddy program for kids who felt ostracized at school.

“He took these lunch periods, which can be long and awkward, and made it a time for the kids to all feel included,” Campolpiano says. “Middle schoolers are not known for their empathy, but Gaby and her son have made that happen almost effortlessly.”

All of this is music to  Ghorbani’s ears.

“When we are gone from this earth, I want to think that Pledge to Humanity will have hundreds of thousands of ambassadors doing kind things daily, “she says. “It’s not just a non-profit in Danville and Alamo, but a global movement. I believe in the children. If I’d gotten the same support at 12, God knows what it would be like now!”

California Launches Effort Promoting Art and Culture Districts

Last week, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Assembly Bill 189 , a measure empowering the California Arts Council to designate areas as Cultural Districts in a competitive application process.

Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council said, “The signing of AB 189, is great news for communities of all sizes, all across our state … (we will) play a central role in strengthening local communities through economic growth, increased tourism, and community cohesion. The resources we expect to bring together on a statewide level will strengthen existing districts and foster the development of new cultural hubs.”

2015-09-29-1443562128-990848-artcouncil.jpg

Governor Brown, Craig Watson, and of course, Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) who introduced AB 189, all undoubtedly see the connections between the arts and creativity and, in turn, between creativity and innovation and want California to continue to lead the nation in the development of theatrical films, television, cable and Internet programs, video games, high tech hardware and software goods and services which are the heart and soul of the new economy.

AB 189 charges the Council to formulate a plan to foster Art Districts throughout the state, thereby enhancing creativity, and in the process, reinventing the landscape of cities throughout the state. The Council, always looking at ways to enhance creativity in the schools and almost everywhere art is displayed, has now joined the movement to change communities too. They will, according to the legislation, “provide technical and promotional support to the districts, as well as collaborate with public agencies and private entities to maximize the benefits to the local and state economy.”

To date, 15 states have taken on a formalized State role in the creation of art and cultural districts. Together, they are leading the effort to transform America for the rapidly evolving creative economy.

According to the National Assembly of State Art Agencies, such “districts are special areas designated or certified by state governments, that utilize cultural resources to encourage economic development and foster synergies between the arts and other businesses. State cultural districts have evolved into focal points that feature many types of businesses, foster a high quality of life for residents, attract tourism and engender civic pride.”

Arts districts, usually found on the periphery of a city center, are intended to create a critical mass of art galleries, dance clubs, theaters, art cinemas, music venues, and public squares for performances. Often, such places also attract cafes, restaurants and retail shops.

2015-09-15-1442343291-6046668-10BROADJP2master315.jpg

More and more however, cities are thinking about such districts as a way to insure the city attracts, nurtures and retains the creative workforce it needs to succeed in the new economy, an economy vitally dependent on creativity and innovation. As important as reinventing our systems of education, communities where people young and old spend more than half their day living and working, aspiring art and culture districts are essential to establishing vibrant and productive communities. Indeed, these places are the incubators of creativity.

Art and Culture Districts, says Theresa Cameron, formerly Local Arts Agency Services Program Manager of Americans for the Arts (AFTA), “have the potential — with their critical mass of art galleries, cinemas, music venues, public squares for performances, restaurants, cafes and retail shops — of attracting, and nurturing the creative workforce our cities need to succeed in the new economy.” Recently AFTA has created a website devoted to the “who, what and why” these districts are so important.

2015-09-15-1442343923-5090666-NCDE.jpg

As the geographical landscape of a city morphs into a larger metropolitan region–partly because of population growth, mostly out of economic necessity — what we call downtown becomes even more critical to the wealth and well-being of the people living in those communities. Few efforts to insure America’s success and survival in the new economy could be more important.

Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky and Massachusetts are the most recent state agencies to establish such an initiative. Eight other states recognized such districts as tax free enterprises and have adopted similar efforts. The appointees to Art Councils, usually loyal friends of the elected Governor, don’t often take on issues of local economic development. But this seems to be changing, as many appointees are visionary leaders, action oriented, and making their voices heard.

States use a variety of tax incentives to encourage business development within local cultural districts. Examples of state incentives include sales, income, or property tax credits or exemptions for goods produced or sold within the district; or preservation tax credits for historic property renovations and rehabilitation. Maybe a state will offer an amusement or admission tax waiver for events within the district. All the plans vary and the funding is uniquely packaged to insure sustainability.

The “State Cultural District” designation from the Art Council seems to be enough for cities to apply, but you have to wonder what cities could do and whether smaller cities might apply if a little financial help were forthcoming. You have to wonder too, what might be possible if more organizations, chambers of commerce, economic development agencies and high tech companies in a region joined forces to help in the reinvention effort.

Daily Life during the California Gold Rush

Daily Life during the California Gold Rush

It is easy to see the vestiges of the California Gold Rush in the state’s modern culture. The San Francisco 49ers football team are named after the term given to those who flocked to California in 1849 in search of gold; California is nicknamed “The Golden State;” and the official state motto is “Eureka” meaning “I have found it” in Greek-a reference to mining success. But the Gold Rush was not only a pivotal event with lasting impact in California; it also greatly affected America as a whole and global society. This book examines the historical significances of the California Gold Rush, beginning with life in California prior to the Gold Rush and European colonization and concluding with information regarding contemporary California. Readers will gain historical insights from the highly detailed explorations of how life in California evolved and understand the enormous impact of an event over 160 years ago on present-day America.

Dr. Brent Fogel: Santa Monica, California, January 18, 2015

2015-03-03-APBDKINDSIGHTDRBRENTFOGELSANTAMONICAJAN182015sized.jpg

It was one or a combination of Fate, Destiny, Kismet, Serendipity, Chance, Luck or other that brought Dr. Fogel and I together. I had been searching for a diagnosis for my worsening mobility, balance and other bodily function impairment for some five years, at multiple facilities and with many practitioners both in and beyond Los Angeles, to no definitive avail, when my case came to the attention of Dr. Fogel, at UCLA. One thing that impressed me early on was Dr. Fogel’s reporting. Doctors write lengthy reports after seeing patients, as a key part of the patient’s medical record. I had seen many reports by doctors through the course of my quest and, while all well intentioned and laced with professional jargon, most if not all reports I had read up to this time contained inaccuracies and/or omissions. But Dr. Fogel’s reporting was on another level. It was one hundred percent accurate in detail and fully complete, like no other I had seen. This in itself won me over and gave me full confidence in him, something that I hadn’t known up till that point with other specialists. I really believed that Dr. Fogel could give me diagnosis. When there is confidence, all parties are empowered. In late 2010, after over seven years of testing and hoping, Dr. Fogel gave me a definitive diagnosis of Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease, a rare, untreatable, inexorably worsening genetic condition that affects mainly Ashkenazi Jews (Eastern European heritage). Dr. Fogel got me into a clinical trial at Baylor in Dallas and, while this didn’t pan out, it led me to connect with Susan Coddon, Dr. Jeffrey Levenson and other members of the Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease Research Foundation (www.apbdrf.org), a tight knit group of fellow sufferers and carers, mostly around my age, who together wield and radiate a powerful dynamic of experience, wisdom, concern and pro-activism. One initiative is that I now dedicate my photography exhibits to raising awareness and support for APBD. Here, I’ve invited Dr. Fogel to speak at the opening reception of my current exhibit in Santa Monica and, not surprisingly, he is a raconteur of the highest order, giving attendees a comprehendible understanding of APBD. Whether by Fate, Chance or other, I am eternally grateful to Dr. Fogel for my diagnosis and all else resulting from our connection, and for illuminating my path.

The reactor operated from 1957 to 1964. On July 12, 1957 the Sodium Reactor Experiment became the first nuclear reactor in the United States to produce electrical power for a commercial power grid by powering the nearby city of Moorpark. In July 1959, the reactor suffered a serious incident in which the reactor core was damaged causing the controlled release of radioactive gas to the atmosphere. The reactor was repaired and restarted in September 1960. In February 1964, the Sodium Reactor Experiment was operated for the last time. Removal of the deactivated reactor was completed in 1981. Recent competing technical analysis of the 1959 incident has produced contrasting conclusions regarding the types and quantities of radioactive materials released. Members of the neighboring communities have expressed concerns about the possible impacts to health and environment from the incident. In August 2009, the Department of Energy hosted a community…
