What Is Captain America’s Plan in Avengers: Endgame?

As if life in the post-Infinity War world weren’t already complicated and terrifying enough, the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame has only served to make things seem even more daunting. With even more questions and very few answers to go around, we’ve been left to start speculating wildly about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and we keep circling back to one very specific moment in the trailer as a jumping off point. Scott Lang has apparently returned from the Quantum Realm in one piece — and he’s arrived at the Avengers compound with his Quantum Tunnel-toting van in tow, which we’re guessing will play a key role in finding a way to defeat Thanos.

The surviving Avengers are, demonstratively, pretty down and out at the start of Endgame. They lost the fight in spectacular fashion and have no Infinity Stones to their name, no real magic users to speak of save Thor who, honestly, seems a little worse-for-wear in the trailer, and no real resources at their disposal. But, Steve and Natasha have a plan — and, though it’s clearly a Hail Mary play, it’s certainly better than nothing. Using what we know based on what little we have, it’s not a total stretch to say that the Quantum tech in Scott’s van is really the only potential ace in the hole Steve and Nat have at the moment, and, because getting really, really small probably isn’t a great combat advantage, given the circumstances, it’s more likely that there’s something else in play here.

Star Wars: Gwendoline Christie on Going ‘Deeper’ with Captain Phasma in The Last Jedi

Captain Phasma may finally get to show why she’s the shiniest of Stormtroopers in The Last Jedi.

The character is back with a vengeance in Episode VIII and literally ready to fight. Phasma’s signature armor “was redesigned and made for movement,” says Gwendoline Christie, the 6-foot-3 Game of Thrones knight who has a gift for playing towering fighters. “It has been completely made-to-measure for me, and every part of my body, to make it as flexible as possible.”

Watch our full Star Wars: The Last Jedi special, streaming now on PeopleTV! Download the PeopleTV app on your favorite device or go to PEOPLE.com/peopletv.

That change is already clear in The Last Jedi scenes of Phasma’s rematch with her nemesis Finn (John Boyega), who forced her to shut down the shields to Starkiller Base near the end of The Force Awakens. Phasma moves fast and fierce.

But this time, Christie hints that the audience will see more of what’s under all that chrome in a “deeper” side of Phasma (could the character simply be a misunderstood phantom menace?).

“The dark side has very little humanity and empathy, so I’m looking forward to seeing the human ,” she says.

Will we see the actual human in Phasma, with Christie unmasked on screen? That’s difficult to see since always in motion the future is.

But for more clues to Episode VIII, pick up PEOPLE’s new special issue Star Wars: The Ultimate Guide to The Last Jedi (on newsstands now) and watch the exclusive PeopleTV special.

The Last Jedi is now in theaters.

There are a variety of unique character prints in this collection; these prints include popular Marvel characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Flash, Thor, Spiderman and many more. The Patent Protected design of this case also allows the wheels to ‘protrude’ out. This protrusion keeps the case elevated, so that even when being rolled at a very low height off the floor, the wheels will be the only point of contact and the case will continue to roll with ease. The cases weigh in at a mere 3.7 lbs, and feature our inline skate wheels that make their rolling even smoother, so any child can easily wheel these fun cases around. Robert Downey Jr. Will Reportedly Star In ‘Captain America 3’

“There’s no plans for an ‘Iron Man 4,'” Robert Downey Jr. told David Letterman during an interview on Oct. 7. “There’s no script for ‘Iron Man 4,’ but they do have a plan, and I think [Marvel is] going to announce it. You know, they’re very secretive about it.” As it turns out, not secret enough: According to Variety, Downey will reprise his role of Tony Stark for “Captain America 3” in a storyline that will pit Stark against Captain America and set off a new wave of Marvel films. Downey’s representatives had no comment on the story when contacted by HuffPost Entertainment.

Having Downey continue his reign as Tony Stark was far from a forgone conclusion. The 49-year-old had only two films left on his current Marvel deal, “Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3,” and frequently discussed a desire to maybe back away from Iron Man.

“To me, it comes down to what’s the half-life of people enjoying a character?” Downey said to Deadline.com in a recent interview. “It’s different on TV, where you expect the longevity over seasons while movies get a two or three year break. Marvel keeps stepping up its game, and I appreciate the way Kevin Feige and all the creatives there think. They are as in the creative wheelhouse as any great studio has been at any point. So it becomes a matter of, at what point do I cease to be an asset to what they’re doing, and at what point do I feel I am spending so much time either shooting or promoting these films that I’m not actually able to get off the beachhead and do the kind of other stuff that is good for all of us. […] It all has become this thing that has to be figured out. It has come to a head, right now, where the points of departure will be.”

As it turns out, the departure for Downey will be in the character himself. According to Variety, Downey’s starring role in “Captain America 3” will kick off Marvel’s Civil War storyline, which will find Iron Man, as a de facto villain, battling Captain America over the Superhero Registration Act, “which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.” The ensuing plot from the 2006 comic book connects multiple Marvel characters, including the current Avengers roster, Ant-Man and Luke Cage (as well as members of the “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” franchises, neither of which are part of Marvel Studios at the moment). Earlier on Monday, Marvel tweeted that Civil War #1 was coming in the summer of 2015, but offered no further information about the comic beyond its artwork — fittingly, a shot of Iron Man and Captain America in the throes of conflict:

Anthony and Joe Russo will return to direct “Captain America 3,” which is due out May 6, 2016. The film was initially set to go against “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but Warner Bros. moved that film to March 25, 2016 in an effort to move away from the Marvel blockbuster. Now that it’s Iron Man vs. Captain America, that date change looks even smarter.

For more on Downey’s “Captain America 3” role and how the negotiations went down, head to Variety.

Zaki’s Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Read my 2011 review of Captain America: The First Avenger here

Read my 2012 review of Marvel’s The Avengers here

For those of you keeping score at home, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the second solo flick from Marvel Studios featuring the shield-wielding Nazi-smasher created by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby, the third film to feature the character (not including this one, natch), and the ninth overall in their mammoth cinematic universe. What all that means is that while it has a particular story to tell and its own specific beats to hit, The Winter Soldier is also subservient to the larger brand that it’s comfortably nestled in, dutifully queuing things up for the next movie(s) in the pipeline (August’s Guardians of the Galaxy and next summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Ultimately, that sense of interconnectivity is both blessing and curse. It allows each entry to feel like it builds on the one previous as part of a larger mega-narrative, but there can also be a sense of static equilibrium at work as well, resulting in action without consequences, and movement without momentum. This is a problem that particularly afflicted the previous “Phase 2” sequels in the Marvel assembly-line: last year’s Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Both did their job well enough, and were far from bad, but they still felt more functional than exceptional. Like they were treading water until the whole gang can get back together and do something that matters.

Thankfully, static equilibrium is one phrase you can’t use to describe this one in the slightest. If The Avengers marked the culmination of the studio’s world-building efforts in the previous wave of movies (beginning with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in ’08), then The Winter Soldier is all about tearing down bits of that world just to keep us from getting too complacent. Based on one of my fave arcs from the comics, it’s focused from beginning to end on forward thrust, placing our hero at the center of a story that not only resets the chessboard in some pretty substantial ways moving forward, but it drives home Cap’s essential utility in a universe filled with super-folks whose power sets easily outclass him.

Picking up shortly after we left him at the end of Avengers, we learn that unlike his heroic teammates, who all have “normal” lives to return to, Captain America, a.k.a. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Chris Evans (who wears the role as comfortably as a glove his third time out) is still trying to find a sense of purpose some seventy-plus years removed from the World War II-era he left behind. As such, he’s signed on with super-spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., serving as their secret weapon of sorts. As we join this entry, Cap is in the process of kiboshing a terrorist takeover at sea, and comes into possession of a memory stick containing the classified info that serves as our McGuffin.

Without getting too much into the weeds in hopes of preserving as many of the surprises as possible, that treasure trove of hidden data launches Our Man headlong into a conspiracy whose hydra-like tendrils threaten to ensnare not only his Avenging colleague Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson, making her third Marvel appearance), but also S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, his sixth) as well as his superior Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford — yep, Robert Redford!). Along the way Rogers is joined by de facto sidekick Sam “Falcon” Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and oh yeah, he has to face off with the deadly Winter Soldier of the title, who may or may not have some connection to Steve’s previous life.

If you’ve been reading my reviews for awhile, you know I tend to enjoy all these Avengers flicks to some extent or another. Part of that may be that I’m still in the “honeymoon” phase of disbelief that we’re even seeing these things getting made, but I think another, more valid reason is simply how well the Marvel Studios operation, honchoed by uber-producer Kevin Feige, works at conceptualizing its storylines and picking the right creatives to pull them off. In this case, while writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely return from the previous film, directors Anthony & Joe Russo step in for Joe Johnston, who ably helmed Captain America: The First Avenger.

Although the Russos’ list of credits, heavy on TV sitcoms like Community and Arrested Development, made them unlikely choices at best for a project of this sort, they display such a preternatural confidence in this genre that you’d think they’ve been doing this stuff for years. While I have my beefs with the overuse of CGI in many action movies of late (Marvel included), it’s perfectly deployed here to enhance and add-on to the practical effects in a way that makes both seem more impressive. There’s a concerted effort to show that when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, there’s no one more skilled than the good Captain. In fact, all the shield-slinging business here is at least as impressive as anything we see Thor do with his magic hammer just one franchise over.

This is demonstrated throughout, but most especially during a claustrophobic elevator-set fight sequence, and later in a no-holds-barred street brawl with the titular soldier. By film’s end, we’ve got several balls in play that we can be assured will develop in different directions across multiple platforms. I’m being coy about much of the story because this is an experience best imbibed with as little clue to its machinations as possible, but suffice it to say, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is everything the Marvel Studios brand represents. It’s the best of the sequels, the best of “Phase 2” (thus far), and not only has it raised the bar for this year’s barrage of superhero flicks (Spider-Man and X-Men sequels, from Sony and Fox respectively, hit next month), but also for Avengers 2 next year. Captain Harding’s Six-Day War

Captain Harding’s Six-Day War

Assigned to baby-sit a loose-cannon colonel at remote Wheelus Air Base, Libya, handsome, hard-charging Captain Joe Harding spends his off-duty time bedding an enlisted medic and a muscular major, then begins a nurturing friendship with the American ambassador’s teenage son. The boy swiftly develops a crush on the man, feelings that Joe, a Southern gent with a strong moral sense, feels he cannot acknowledge or return. Joe’s further adventures and misadventures during the course of the novel involve a clerk’s murder, a flight-surgeon’s drug abuse, a fist-fight in the officers’ club bar, a straight roommate whose taste for leather gets him in trouble, the combat death of Joe’s former lover, and participation in an all-male orgy witnessed by two very married but somewhat confused fighter jocks. In the run-up to the 1967 war, a mob attacks the embassy in nearby Tripoli and the deranged colonel sets out to attack an Arab warship. To bring the pilots and their airplanes safely home – and keep the United States out of the war – Joe has two choices: either come out to his closest, straightest buddies or know himself to be a coward, a failure and a traitor to everything that he holds dear.

Zach Sherwin has released the music video above entitled “Goose MCs” that has absolutely everything you could imagine in it and more. Is there a hip-hop sound and smooth lyrical rhyme that gets your head bobbing to the beat? Check. Are there ballerinas dancing and dressed up as both Captain Sullenberger and a flock of geese? Yup.
