Hairstylist’s Touching Photos Capture The Raw Reality Of Depression

One hairstylist proved to be a cut above when she helped a client experiencing a mental health condition.

In February, a woman walked into The Salon, a haircut location inside of Ulta Beauty in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and began pulling every “All Soft” product by Redken off the shelf. Kate Langman, an employee the salon, noticed what the customer was doing and approached her to see if she needed any help.

The two began to talk, and Langman soon learned that the woman had depression. She hadn’t left her bed in six months due to her mental health condition, she told Langman, and had neglected to wash or brush her hair.

Instead, the woman had pulled her hair back into a bun, which over time became a giant, matted knot.

Langman offered to do the woman’s hair, making her an appointment for the very next day.

“I have a very close family member that went through similar [mental health struggles],” Langman told The Huffington Post. “If I would have let her walk away with all of those products that she spent a hundreds of dollars on, she would have gotten nowhere — which she would have possibly viewed as another failure for her.”

But the woman didn’t show up for the appointment. Two weeks later, she called and booked another appointment. And once again, she was a no-show.

“It actually, kind of, broke my heart,” Langman wrote on Facebook.

Then, on March 9, the woman came into the salon and asked Langman if she could do her hair.

“When she walked in that [day], I had a feeling of relief,” Langman told HuffPost. “That she still had the drive to feel like herself again.”

Langman worked with the woman for over eight hours, brushing, cutting and coloring her hair. The results were phenomenal.

After the experience, Langman posted the story to Facebook, where it went viral, receiving over 16,000 shares and 35,000 likes.

“By the end of this service, I could see the sparkle in her eyes,” Langman wrote in her post.

The anonymous client’s symptoms aren’t uncommon for the more than 300 million people worldwide who experience depression. The disorder can deplete a person’s energy and motivation, making simple routines like fixing your hair feel like an excruciating task.

Langman says she’s happy that she could be there for the woman, who confirmed the story to The Huffington Post.

“I wanted her to know that there is someone that is here to help her,” Langman said. “No matter the circumstances. She needed someone she could count on and I wanted to be that person for her.”

These ‘La La Land’ Engagement Pics Capture That Old Hollywood Romance

Let’s give this couple an Oscar nod for their dreamy “La La Land”-themed engagement photos.

Ellen Wleklinski and Corey Collins teamed up with photographer Marlies Hartmann of M. Hart Photography for the Los Angeles shoot, inspired by the Academy Award-nominated film that follows aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) and struggling jazz musician Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) as they fall in love and pursue their dreams.

Some of the engagement pics were taken on Jan. 29 at and around the Griffith Observatory, where parts of the movie were shot. The starry nighttime photos were taken two weeks later at the Hollywood Bowl Overlook.

“Ellen and Corey’s relationship encapsulates the same romance, passion, playfulness and chemistry that was felt between Mia and Sebastian throughout the film,” the photographer told The Huffington Post. “Not only did they resemble the characters physically, but their relationship embodies all the best elements of Gosling and Stone seen in the movie.”

The bride-to-be had suggested Griffith Observatory to Marlies as a possible location for the shoot since she often runs in the park nearby. At the time, Marlies had just seen “La La Land” and thought it would be a perfect theme to capture the couple’s own classic love story.

“I was initially hesitant to suggest it to them since I wasn’t sure if they had seen or even liked the movie, but I threw out the idea and they loved it!” she told HuffPost. “They were both huge fans of the film, and Ellen always felt that Corey looked like her own personal Ryan Gosling!”

The couple plans to tie the knot in September at the Redondo Beach Historic Library. Below, more photos from the utterly romantic shoot:

Overwatch’s Capture the Flag Is Made A Permanent Mode

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has announced that Capture the Flag will remain a playable part of Overwatch, with nine more maps being added to the roster – but there’s a caveat.

Capture the Flag was introduced during the Year of the Rooster event, which celebrates Chinese New Year. Previous modes introduced for timed festivities have included Lucioball and Mei’s Snowball offensive, both of which were made unavailable once their associated events ended.

However, Kaplan confirmed in a developer update that the decision to make Capture the Flag a permanent fixture of Overwatch will spark a few changes. The mode will only be available as a custom game (not Quick Play or Ranked), so in conjunction with this news Blizzard is introducing the server browser.

Get Ready To Capture Pokémon In The Real World With Your Smartphone

The Pokémon franchise is venturing into augmented reality for the first time, Nintendo announced Thursday, so soon you’ll be able to catch ’em all in the real world.

The offering, called Pokémon GO, will function as an interactive game that lets players use their iPhones or Android devices to “catch” Pokémon as they go about their lives.

“Pokémon GO will use real location information to encourage players to search far and wide,” a press release says. “Pokémon GO’s gameplay experience goes beyond what appears on screen, as players explore their neighborhoods, communities, and the world they live in to discover Pokémon alongside friends and other players.”

The whole concept sounds a little like Pokémon meets geocaching, the interactive treasure-hunting game whose finds are hidden in the real world.

Part of the newly immersive experience will involve wearing Apple Watch-like tech called the Pokémon GO Plus. Users can keep the Bluetooth-connected device on when their phones are stashed away, and it will vibrate and flash if a virtual Pokémon is nearby.

The Pokémon GO Plus looks a little like a Happy Meal toy in the official photos, although The Verge has some close-up shots from a Nintendo press conference in which it seems a bit nicer. It’s unclear how much the device will cost.

This isn’t the first version of Pokémon on smartphones. Nintendo partnered with Japanese game-maker DeNA earlier this year to bring original titles featuring its famed characters to the iPhone. The first Pokémon installment, a puzzle game called Pokémon Shuffle, was released in early September.

The move to smartphones is a notable departure from Nintendo’s past strategy, which relied heavily on selling its own game consoles and devices. The Japanese company has struggled over the past few years after disappointing sales of the Wii U.

Pokémon GO will be available for free in the App Store and through Google Play. The game will permit in-app purchases, a big moneymaker for some other apps. Players of the free Candy Crush Saga spent more than $ 1.3 billion on in-app features like extra lives and moves in 2014.

These Photos Capture The Spirit Of New Orleans, 10 Years After Katrina

It’s been a slow recovery since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans 10 years ago, but residents are hopeful that the city is returning to its roots.

New Orleanians are repopulating their city, reestablishing festive traditions, repairing historic landmarks, rebuilding churches and reinvigorating the educational system.

Things like “Who dat Saints” and Mardi Gras have always been staples in its rich history — but it is the people who have undeniably made New Orleans the cultural hub it is today.

President Obama described the city as a place where “the jazz makes you cry and the funerals make you dance,” during his speech in New Orleans on Thursday.

Here are 35 uplifting photos that show resilient New Orleanians and capture the spirt of the city, one decade after Katrina:

9 Harrowing Images That Capture The Lasting Impact Of Sexual Assault

Survivors of assault and abuse are sharing their experiences on a powerful new Tumblr, Lasting Impact.

(Story continues below.)

lasting impact

Founder Alison, who asked that her last name remain private, created Lasting Impact to raise awareness about the long-lasting impact that incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, and emotional and physical abuse have on those who experience them. The project is also a place for survivors to share stories of healing.

“As a survivor of childhood sexual assault, I struggled for many years with mental health issues that impacted almost every aspect of my daily life and left me feeling confused and alone,” Alison told The Huffington Post. “It wasn’t until I began to connect with other survivors that I came to realize that this is a common and valid response to trauma, and it was only then that I truly began to heal.”

lasting impact

The Tumblr entries come from survivors who write in to share how their experiences affected and changed them. Some also share how they have healed from their traumas and found hope for the future.

“Survivors often face a myriad of psychological, emotional, social, and physical challenges following an assault, and I wanted to expand the conversation about sexual assault and domestic violence to include the complex, long-term toll trauma takes on an individual,” Alison told HuffPost.

lasting impact

Alison also hopes that the Tumblr will be a positive place for survivors.

“While the campaign focuses primarily on the challenges faced by survivors, it also shows that we all have an incredible capacity for courage, resilience, and growth,” she told HuffPost. “Survivors’ stories do not have to begin and end with fear, violation, and despair. It is my hope that when survivors read these stories, they recognize that their experiences are valid and understand that no matter what they are feeling, they are never alone.”

Powerful Photos Capture Impact of ‘Narco Aesthetic’ In Medellín, Colombia

“Beauties” is a photo essay I shot on the interpretation of beauty and female culture in Medellín, Colombia.

Medellín is the second largest city in Colombia. During the ’80s and ’90s, it was at the epicenter of narcotics traffic in South America. Today, plunging homicide rates, a public campaign to reduce violence, and urban development have helped new libraries, parks, schools and sustainable infrastructure flourish. This combination has qualified Medellín as a city of change on the international stage.

However, when a big phenomenon and transition like this happens in a society, it is inevitable that it affects all aspects of it; in this case, one of them was the interpretation of beauty. During these years, the female body became a reflection of a lavish lifestyle. Drug lords would visit the U.S to conduct drug deals and return with images of beauty that they’d seen on prostitutes there: blonde and voluptuous, with thin noses. Back home, they had the money to transform any woman into that canon of beauty.

This understanding of the female body, usually called narco aesthetic, had a deep impact on the female culture of the city. In Medellín, women have historically been seen as strong figures, mothers and hard workers. For many, it is still like that, but the 1980s and ’90s brought a very materialistic approach that changed the role of women’s beauty and bodies.

This is how cosmetic surgery went mainstream in Medellín. The photoessay introduces the viewers to teenagers with casual familiarities with liposuction; a diet pill seller so desperate to be “as pretty as her friends” she allowed an unqualified doctor to put bio-polymers in her buttocks (a procedure she’s now seeking to reverse); and handfuls of women who’ve spent millions of pesos on plastic surgery besides.

Even so, my main objective wasn’t to focus on the popularity of plastic surgery in the city, but on how social factors changed the understanding of our own bodies. I just wanted to investigate how women and beauty are interpreted in a particular space and time frame. However, it was inevitable that the love for plastic surgery in the city showed up in the essay; not taking it into account would have meant ignoring a big part of the reality.

Provoking girls to realize there are alternative ways of seeing beauty is a huge priority in my reportage. I would like to believe that my work will inspire other women to analyze what they see around them and realize that it’s just a culturally formed interpretation of beauty; you don’t need to take it in full.

Photos Capture Tender Moment When Man Surprises His Wife In Hospital On Their 57th Anniversary

The sweet story of an elderly man’s tuxedoed surprise for his wife on their 57th anniversary has spread like wildfire on the Interwebs this week as netizens everywhere celebrated the Georgia couple’s enduring love.

James “Jim” Russell told ABC News that he and his wife Elinor don’t typically celebrate their wedding anniversaries in a big way, but this year, his family encouraged him to do something extra special.

So on May 20, Russell — who says he’s known Elinor “since she was in pigtails” — donned a tuxedo and, bearing an armful of flowers and chocolates, surprised his beloved in her hospital room. Elinor has reportedly been hospitalized for the past month.

The couple shared a meal in her room, then watched her favorite TV shows. Elinor told ABC News that the duo “had a wonderful time.”

“Being in a hospital bed, you get bored so when they came in, it made me smile like the younger days when we were dancing,” she said.

The couple’s granddaughter, Reid Russell, shared photographs of the special occasion on Twitter this week. Her tweet promptly went viral, racking up more than 25,000 retweets.

On Thursday, Russell wrote that she was “blessed” to have her grandparents in her life.

Electric Abstract Paintings Capture Life In A Constant State Of Metamorphosis

It’s a humbling feeling to look at an image and have no idea what it is you’re actually looking at. It’s one of the magical abilities of abstract art, to turn even the most knowledgable of viewers into a childish eye, searching for meaning and grasping for balance in the face of the unknown. Erin Loree gives us this stomach-jumbling feeling in the best of ways.

Loree’s electric abstract canvases feel at once heavy — largely due to the significant piles of paint that bulge off the page — and light — thanks to some unearthly energy radiating from their insides. The Toronto-based artist turns adjectives into nouns, and turns properties like weight, color and texture into the things themselves. Her psychedelic canvases shape shift before your eyes, resembling finger paintings from an alien being. We reached out to the artist to learn more about her work.

oasis

Oasis, Oil on canvas, 25” x 36”, 2014

How did you first become interested in art?

I’ve been making art ever since I was old enough to hold a crayon. When I was young, my Dad — a draftsman, painter, and musician — used to draw with me for hours every day on pieces of bristol board spread out on the floor. I always knew that I wanted to be an artist, so I never experienced any form of inner conflict about my life’s path. I’m extremely luck that both of my parents value growth and creativity as a way of life and that almost everyone in my family is involved in the arts in some way. Attending art school has also fostered my passion and opened me up to the infinite number of creative minds and possible artistic avenues.

Were there people in particular that inspired or motivated you?

There is one professor in particular who has changed the way I approach painting. Nicole Collins, an incredible abstract encaustic painter and my former professor at OCADU, introduced me to the idea that “making mistakes” is the most effective and creative way to learn. She encouraged exploration of new materials, trial and error, and having fun. I learned from her the important lessons of letting go and valuing the process.

A few of the artists that inspire my work are: Allison Schulnik, for her thick and gritty application of paint; Maya Hayuk, for her fresh technicolor palette; Harold Klunder, for his built-up organic forms and the rawness of his abstract self-portraits; and Francis Bacon for his bold and visceral strokes.

pink

State shift , Oil on canvas, 20” x 20”, 2014

How would you describe your style?

My work teeters between abstraction and representation but I would say it falls into the category of Abstract Expressionism. I attempt to depict an inner world of feeling or spirit and although there are representational elements in my work, I don’t consciously look to forms from the external world to express my ideas.

What about your process? How long does each work take and what kinds of materials are you using?

Without using references, I paint expressively with oil on canvas, panel, and mylar by combining diffused, multicolored gradients with thick and visceral marks, creating what can often be seen as human or ghostlike forms and anthropomorphized natural phenomena. In my most recent paintings, I have begun to experiment with different tools, allowing me to build up thick layers of paint or scrape these layers away to reveal lost or forgotten compositions. I work on one piece at a time without any preconceived idea of the final image in mind, thriving on the uncertainty that this process fosters. I begin each piece by intuitively laying down a few bold strokes on the surface and from there I piece the rest of the composition together like a puzzle, stroke by stroke, until it feels unified — each mark dictating the next. I often attempt to destroy a piece before I find something interesting to work with. This process allows the painting to come alive and evolve as needed. As a result, I am able to experience an ongoing and interactive relationship with the material.

In terms of how long it takes me to complete a piece, I like work wet-on-wet, so I tend to complete a painting in one or two sittings. However, lately I’ve started to explore layering paint on already dry works which creates some interesting gritty textures.

when it

When it rains, it pours, Oil on mylar mounted on panel, 30” x 24”, 2014

What do you hope to communicate through your work?

Most of my recent work is inspired by time spent in the Peruvian Amazon jungle. In the tangled paradise of the rainforest, I had the opportunity to really observe the cycles and rhythms in the natural world and, in doing so, began to understand how they reflect my own internal processes. Everything around us and inside of us is in a continuous state of becoming, birthing and dying, expanding and contracting. I’m fascinated by the transience of nature and its ability to remind us of the constant transformation within ourselves. Through my application of paint, I hope to communicate this understanding that everything in the universe, physical and non-physical, is impermanent and in a constant state of flux. The work inevitably resembles something in a state of transition or metamorphosis as the paint appears to melt and fold into itself. Although I use paint to create static images, I apply it in such a way as to suggest forms that are fluid and ever-changing.

See more of Loree’s work below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Playful Photos Capture What It Actually Looks Like To Be A Nun Today

When we imagine the life of a nun, we imagine scenes of reverent prayer, humble wisdom and constant piety. We don’t really conjure images of, say, trying to mow the lawn when a dog obnoxiously gets in the way and messes with your groove.

But, then again, someone’s got to mow the lawn.

dog

Today we’re smiling over photographs of modern day nuns doing their not quite so sacred duties, thanks to Scotland-based photographer Craig Buchan. The series, titled “Commitment,” features the sisters of the Poor Clare Monastery living lives of total devotion to the Bible, free of worldly possessions or desires. However, despite how different their lives may be from the average contemporary city-dweller, there are still moments of shared experience in the banal chores of everyday life.

“I had a chance meeting with sister Dominique and the idea, to start this project, grew from there,” Buchan explained in a statement. “I’ve always been drawn to individuals who seem to break the mold or challenge our preconceived notions of identity, the sisters of Humbie very much do so. I was welcomed into their private world and photographing in this environment for me was inspiring, to have the chance to capture the little moments that reveal themselves.”

Buchan’s images capture the sweet juxtaposition of divine calling and banal duty, revealing that the space between people living very different lives is often not as vast as it seems. Whether taking a drive or vacuuming a rug, the sisters of Humbie capture the contemporary reality of a lifestyle that’s often assumed to be from another time. “I hope to give an insight of what life is like as a nun in this day and age and to show a lighter side too,” Buchan continued. Mission accomplished.
