Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt Collaborate on a Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen Mashup for a Cause

The latest “Hamildrop” is more than just a theater lover’s dream come true — it’s a Broadway mashup with a powerful message and a plan to make change.

Lin-Manuel Miranda teamed up with Tony winner Ben Platt for a collaboration of songs from both of their hit musicals, Hamilton’s “The Story of Tonight” and “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen. The result, “Found/Tonight,” was released on Monday at midnight.

Platt and Miranda start out by swapping parts, with the 24-year-old Pitch Perfect actor singing the lyrics from “The Story of Tonight” before Miranda, 38, takes on a few lines from Dear Evan Hansen.

“Even when the dark comes crashing through/When you need a friend to carry you/When you’re broken on the ground/You will be found,” they sing together in the mashup arranged by Hamilton orchestrator Alex Lacamoire.

The song’s take on a new meaning in light of last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17, with both tunes encouraging listeners to persevere in the face of hardship.

A portion of the proceeds from “Found/Tonight” will go to the March for Our Lives, which is being held in Washington, D.C., on March 24 to protest gun violence.

“In the wake of Parkland, I was awestruck by the strength and leadership of the students and their ability to speak truth to power,” Miranda said in a press release for the song. “In the midst of their grief, they mobilized the youth of our nation and created a movement. This is their moment. Not just for themselves, but for all of us. This song is my way of helping to raise funds and awareness for their efforts, and to say Thank You, and that we are with you so let’s keep fighting, together.”

Platt added in his own statement, “These students are paving the way for future generations and it’s so inspiring to see young people standing up for what is probably the most important cause right now in this country, and demanding action.  I hope that this song can play some small part in bringing about real change.”

Parkland shooting survivors, along with celebrities like Zach Braff, praised the song.

“I just listened to it and I can’t stop crying I’m gonna listen to this forever holy heck,” tweeted Emma González, a Parkland student who has spoken out against gun violence in the month since the tragedy.

Alex Wind, another survivor, added, “Yeah, it’s incredible. Thank you so much to two brilliant minds @Lin_Manuel and @BenSPLATT for this beautiful song to help #MarchForOurLives.”

Miranda announced in December that he will be dropping new spins on the music from Hamilton every month of 2018. Previous releases have included Weird Al Yankovic‘s medley “The Hamilton Polka” and The Decemberists’ “Ben Franklin’s Song.”

My Cause, My Cleats: How Russell Wilson’s Shoes Are Inspiring Kids to Ask Themselves ‘Why Not You?’

Long before Russell Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl win in 2014, the athletically gifted future quarterback was drafted to the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the MLB draft on June 8, 2010. But just a day after the then-recent college graduate reached the milestone, his beloved father — Harrison Wilson III — passed away of complications from diabetes at the age of 55.

“Ever since that moment I knew I wanted to strive for something great,” Wilson, 28, who joined the Seahawks in 2012 after a short stint playing minor league baseball, tells PEOPLE. “I wanted to strive for something great. I wanted to be able to accomplish all the things I wanted to accomplish and the question, ‘why not you?’ kept coming up in my head.”

Wilson held on to that question — which his father asked him many times throughout keys points in his life — and in 2014, he formed the Why Not You Foundation, an organization focused on motivating and empowering today’s youth. Through the foundation, Wilson has become deeply involved with the Seattle Children’s Hospital, and was able to raise more than a million dollars for the medical facility and its Strong Against Cancer initiative last year.

As a part of the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign — which allows players to wear customized cleats that showcase their charitable causes — Wilson will be wearing specialized “Why Not You” cleats featuring designs submitted by kids from the Seattle Children’s Hospital during the Seahawks game this Sunday night against the Jaguars. About 1,000 players will be showcasing their causes during Week 13 games, according to the NFL, and players will be sharing pictures of their cleats and the stories behind them using the hashtag #mycausemycleats on social media.

Players who participate will be able to auction off their cleats to raise funds for their cause at NFL Auction after the game.

“Six kids from Seattle Children’s told us if they could dream one thing that could come true, one thing that could happen, what would that thing be?” Wilson says. “What would that why not you thing be? That’s what’s displayed on the cleats.”

The quarterback credits his parents with teaching him the importance of service, and it’s something Wilson wants to pass along to his daughter, Sienna Princess Wilson, whom he welcomed with his wife, Ciara, in April.

“I want my kids to know that this life is about serving others and loving others and giving back to others. That’s where the true reward is — making other peoples’ lives a little bit better,” Wilson says. “The mission of the Why Not You Foundation is to empower and change one individual, one child at a time.”

In many ways, the foundation is also helping to keep the spirit of Wilson’s father alive by striving to show children the potential in themselves that Harrison helped Wilson to see.

“He was always a big dreamer. He gave me an imagination, and he allowed me to dream,” Wilson says. “He used to ask me, ‘Why not you?’ and that was really the fundamental core question of my life, of my growth, and it still is today.”

Just like his father, Wilson is still dreaming big, and his next goal is to raise more than a billion dollars for Strong Against Cancer through his foundation.

For kids who are struggling to find motivation or confidence within themselves, Wilson has two suggestions for them: surrender and surround.

“Surrender to what you believe in, whether it’s your faith or what you want to be successful in. You have to strive for that every day. To be really great at something you have to strive for it every day and believe that you can make it,” he says. “And then surround yourself with those people who will encourage you.”

Mark Wahlberg Forces Journalists To Reenact Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’ Video Just ‘Cause

Usually it’s the journalists asking things of celebrities, but in this case, Mark Wahlberg turned the tables.

In London for a “Transformers: The Last Knight” press event, Wahlberg recently grouped together some male entertainment writers on the staircase where the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” video was filmed at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel.

To see just how well the ragtag boy band nailed it, here’s part of the original with the new footage:

Does Your Vision for Your Life Cause You to Look Up…or Down?

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a Cathedral.” ~ Antone de Saint-Exupery

Several years ago, while in Barcelona, Spain, I had the opportunity to visit Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi’s, one-of-a kind, “Sagrada Família.” While not officially a “cathedral” because it is not yet the seat of a Bishop, it is often thought of as such because it stands as high or higher than many ancient cathedrals. What is unique about the structure is that, while Gothic in design, it is also very “Art Nouveau” and unlike any other cathedral ever built; it is one-of-a-kind, in a class of its own. If you have ever seen pictures of it you’ll understand why I call it one of a kind. I encourage you to Google “Sagrada Família” and see for yourself–you’ll be rather stunned.

Gaudi designed and took over the construction of the project in 1883 and, the amazing thing is, to this day, it is still a work in progress. It stands higher than many skyscrapers; scaffolding and huge mechanical cranes loom in the skyline. The completion of the project is tentatively set for 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s passing. It is said that he devoted the best of his years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Can you imagine holding such a grand vision and not living to see it come to full fruition?

One-hundred and twenty-eight years after his vision was cast, I humbly stood at the base of this monolithic structure and gazed skyward wondering how much more had to be done to complete his vision. My mind raced back to the year 1883 when there was little more than barren land and rocks in that spot and I imagined him standing there, looking up, seeing his masterpiece in its completed form. That’s what visionaries do–they see their dream in its completed form long before it is realized in the material world. The transformation of concrete and rocks into a cathedral happened before Gaudi’s workers ever broke ground…and the fact that they are still working on the manifestation of it proves it was a very big vision.

Do you have a vision for your life and, if so, how big is it? Can you see yourself living that life now, even if the outer manifestation of it isn’t yet visible? While many say you have to see it to believe it, others are saying, you have to believe it to see it. Which are you? This is where and when the foundation for a life worth living is established. The practice is to contemplate your life as Gaudi contemplated his cathedral–as a completed idea in the creative Mind of a Universe that knows no limitations. In other words, the sky really is the limit; the only caveat is that this creative Mind is waiting for you to upload the design blueprints known as your belief system. What is your vision for your life? Are you looking up, or looking down? Be mindful of where your predominate thoughts go because, whether you are aware of it or not, that is the design plan you are uploading.

Clearly, Gaudi believed in his vision, so much so that it had no alternative but to become a reality, even years after his passing. That is a powerful vision when it takes on a life of its own. Turning a pile of rocks into a cathedral isn’t difficult once you have the vision–the Universe conspires to support you in your vision if you are willing to stand in it, own it and act on it. We are all visionaries–that is to say, we each hold in our mind a vision for our life; what it can or can’t be, might or might not be, or, will or won’t be. So the question really isn’t, do you have a vision for your life–if you are alive you have a vision. The real question is, what is your vision? Are you looking down at the rocks or up to the sky? Remember, the Universe is listening and it is already uploading your blueprints.

Peace, Dennis

12 Pieces Of Safety Pin Jewelry To Wear For A Beautiful Cause

The unsettling rhetoric from Donald Trump’s campaign, as well as the countless acts of hate that have been reported in the days since his election, have left many people wondering how they can be an ally to those targeted by hateful actions and words.

There’s one incredibly easy way to show your support ― wear a safety pin. Adapted from a movement that spread in the United Kingdom following the Brexit vote, Americans have been encouraged to wear safety pins on their clothing to signal solidarity. If you’re wearing a safety pin, it’s a sign that you’re a safe ally.

According to an Instagram posted by user b00kn00k, wearing the pin shows that “immigrants, refugees and anyone else threatened by the hate and fear mongering of Trump and his many supporters can know that I care and will do all I can to combat xenophobia, racism, sexism and ableism.”

As it happens, safety pins happen to be lovely in design on their own accord, and have been the inspiration for jewelry of all different types. If you are looking to show your solidarity and want something a bit more permanent than a safety pin, here are 12 lovely pieces of jewelry to consider.

Now You Can Buy Your Own Trump Blow-Up Sex Doll (For A Good Cause)

Syrian artist Saint Hoax claims not to pay much attention to the vitriol that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth. But last week, the presidential hopeful made some comments on Europe’s refugee crisis that he couldn’t ignore: If elected, Trump said that he would send all Syrian refugees in the U.S. back to their war-torn country. Because the refugees could, Trump opined, be ”a Trojan horse” for ISIS.

Saint Hoax is responding with a satirical project involving blow-up sex dolls made to look like Donald Trump. For $ 39, you can own a Trump of your very own, to do with as you see fit. Proceeds from the sale of the dolls, all made in China (obviously), will go to the UN Refugee Agency to provide blankets, water, dry clothes and food to Syrian refugees.

“I’m hoping to raise enough money to show people how a blow-up Donald is actually more useful than the actual Trump,” the artist told The Huffington Post in an email from Lebanon. In addition to dissing the candidate, Saint Hoax sees the dolls as a metaphor.

“People can fill him up with air and deflate him at any minute,” he wrote. “It’s a symbolic representation of how a political leader is made. Each box includes a Trump doll and a needle for you to pop him whenever you feel like it.”

DiFerdinando Collaborates with Kids of Ronald McDonald House for a Cause

Handbag designer Danielle DiFerdinando participated in some child’s play but for a serious cause — the Ronald McDonald House. At a party she hosted for the children and mothers at the Ronald McDonald House on Manhattan’s Upper East Side last February, “We had the kids participate in a contest to sketch a tote bag based on what made them happy — anything from animals, nature, superheroes, or love,” recalled DiFerdinando. “We combined the sketches from the children and came up with a tote design. The kids were so happy to see their designs come to life.”
The tote, now available on macys.com and danielle-nicole.com, retails for $ 70. A percentage of the sales will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House New York, which provides a temporary “home-away-from-home” for pediatric cancer patients and their families. “It makes you stop and think what is really important in life — health and family,” said DiFerdinando, designer of the Danielle Nicole handbag line and long-time volunteer at Ronald McDonald House.

Cause for Alarm: The Volunteer Fire Department in the Nineteenth-Century City

Cause for Alarm: The Volunteer Fire Department in the Nineteenth-Century City

Though central to the social, political, and cultural life of the nineteenth-century city, the urban volunteer fire department has nevertheless been largely ignored by historians. Redressing this neglect, Amy Greenberg reveals the meaning of this central institution by comparing the fire departments of Baltimore, St. Louis, and San Francisco from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Volunteer fire companies protected highly flammable cities from fire and provided many men with friendship, brotherhood, and a way to prove their civic virtue. While other scholars have claimed that fire companies were primarily working class, Greenberg shows that they were actually mixed social groups: merchants and working men, immigrants and native-born-all found a common identity as firemen. Cause for Alarm presents a new vision of urban culture, one defined not by class but by gender. Volunteer firefighting united men in a shared masculine celebration of strength and bravery, skill and appearance. In an otherwise alienating environment, fire companies provided men from all walks of life with status, community, and an outlet for competition, which sometimes even led to elaborate brawls. While this culture was fully respected in the early nineteenth century, changing social norms eventually demonized the firemen’s vision of masculinity. Greenberg assesses the legitimacy of accusations of violence and political corruption against the firemen in each city, and places the municipalization of firefighting in the context of urban social change, new ideals of citizenship, the rapid spread of fire insurance, and new firefighting technologies. Gifts that Give: How to Shop for a Cause This Holiday Season

Americans spend over 250 billion dollars annually on fashion. Take a moment to let that sink in, and read that statistic again. Yup, I said 250 billion. As a philanthropist and a firm believer in conscious consumerism, I am always thinking about how to create “products with a purpose” that give twice.

It is my belief, that by empowering the consumer to give back by encouraging them to feel a constant and engaging connection to giving, that the birth of a new world, where our dollars can act as a catalyst to accomplish the change we want to see in the world will be possible. After all, by encouraging money over involvement, we are perpetuating the notion that the problem, be it poverty or child soldiers, is far away, and we can absolve ourselves of any responsibility by signing checks.

With that said, since supporting important causes can be easy to forget amid the hustle and bustle of shopping during the holiday season, I decided to talk all about “gifts that give” on my latest NBC style segment on the Kerri-lee Mayland show. After all, I’ve said it before and ill say it again: it’s better to give than to receive. And what better time to tap into your altruistic spirit than the holidays? Here are some suggestions of holiday gift ideas that give twice:

Kiehl’s Since 1851 ‘Greatest Hits’ Collection
Delight every Kiehl’s lover on your list with this beautiful, ready-to-give gift collection featuring the brand’s signature advanced skincare technologies and natural ingrediants. With the purchase of the “greatest hits” collection, Kiehls will donate 100% of their profits (up to $ 100,000) from the US sales of this Limited Edition set to support Feeding America.

On Purpose -Kate spade

The Kate Spade “On Purpose” collection is the perfect gift for the fashionista in your life that has a heart as big as her closet. The brand has teamed up with local artisans in Rwanda for a new limited-edition collection with a purpose. The collection is handcrafted by 150 women in Masoro, a town in central Rwanda. The goal behind On Purpose is to give these women economic stability, and aims to teach these artisans how to become valued suppliers in the global marketplace.

Me to We
Looking for some accessories and gems that will excite and delight a loved one this holiday season? Look no further than “Me to We.” The company describes themselves as an innovative social enterprise that provides people with better choices for a better world. They offer socially conscious and environmentally friendly products. Best of all? Half of Me to We’s net profit is donated to Free The Children. The other half is reinvested to grow the enterprise and its social mission.

La Mer
A favorite of celebrities and those in the know, a La Mer product is the perfect way to spoil that special someone on your list. With the introduction of their limited-edition Hand Treatment, theres no better time than the present to send a message of hope to a woman in need while treating the woman in your life at the same time. For every purchase of the silky, smoothing hand treatment formulated to heal dry skin, La Mer will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Bobbi Brown Pretty Powerful
There’s a new-level pretty–one that reflects self-confidence and acceptance. Bobbi Brown Pretty Powerful product line supports her campaign that seeks to propel women and girls to a communal recognition of every woman being fundamentally beautiful. That’s why every penny earned from the sale of these products go to support organizations around the world that strive to empower women, such as Dress for Success, and HeartBeat.

“Shoes That Fit”
Give a special holiday gift this year to a child in need. As in years past, all Nordstrom stores will display a holiday tree with tags that represent deserving local children identified by national non-profit organization Shoes That Fit. Shoes That Fit works with more than 200 schools nationwide to determine those children who are most in need of new shoes and then measures the children’s feet so their shoes will fit comfortably. When customers purchase the tag for $ 10, the child will then receive New Balance athletic shoes.

Need a gift for a new boyfriend? Look no further than Anthonys skincare line. Anthony and Action donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of all products to support prostate cancer research so you can do as much good for his skin as you will for the health of men everywhere.

Adele Gives Rare Glimpse Into Her Private Life, For A Good Cause

Adele has achieved international superstar status at the tender age of 20 but she has managed to keep her personal life almost entirely private in the five years since. Until now, that is.

Promoting World Water Day on Saturday, March 22, Adele posted a four photo collage to her Twitter account. The clues we can glean are few but precious: Adele has a small fish tank, Adele looks positively stunning without makeup, and Adele’s 17-month-old baby boy Angelo is growing up so fast!
