CFDA and NYCEDC Highlight Graduate Fashion Collections

The CFDA and New York City Economic Development Corp. earlier this week held the Fashion Future Graduate Showcase, a three-day showcase of design talent from some of the top fashion schools in the U.S. at Industria Studios. Collections by 53 graduates from schools including Academy of Art University, California College of the Arts, FIT, Kent State University, Parsons, Pratt, Rhode Island School of Design and SCAD were exhibited July 9 and 10, with the top four collections presented on July 11. The students selected for Wednesday’s presentation included Zhouyi Li of the Academy of Art University, Taliah Leslie of Pratt, and Britt Luttio and Peng Ye of Parsons.
All four students took the conceptual route, with Li working her garments with three-dimensional geometric shapes inspired by Richard Serra. Luttio worked with the concept of identity. “Within our persona we have multiple identities,” she said. “How I am in this space is not how I’m going to be with my lover or with my mom.” Her collection featured transformative pieces with a definitive Nineties attitude, that was influenced by things from her childhood — Victoria’s Secret and Betsey Johnson. Ye based his collection on the word 刹那, which represents the shortest accountable

Ralph Lauren to Be Honored at 2018 CFDA Awards

It’s fair to say that Ralph Lauren is the most iconic American designer, and the most successful. He’s celebrating the 50th anniversary of his brand this year and the CFDA is not going to let it go unnoticed. Lauren will receive the first-ever CFDA Members Salute during the CFDA Fashion Awards June 4. A representative for the CFDA could not disclose what the honor would entail during the ceremony, but a statement described the salute as a special honor “on behalf of the 500-plus membership in recognition of Lauren’s immeasurable impact on American and global fashion as well as his leadership and philanthropy as he marks his 50th anniversary milestone.”
The 2018 CFDA Awards will be held at the Brooklyn Museum and hosted by Issa Rae. Other special honors of the night are being given to Kim Kardashian, Carolina Herrera, Donatella Versace, Narciso Rodriguez, Edward Enninful and Diane von Furstenberg.

Exclusive: Kim Kardashian West to Be Honored at CFDA Awards

If Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell and Carolina Herrera, along with most of the biggest names in American fashion and various celebrity dates/presenters weren’t enough, Kim Kardashian West will grace the CFDA Fashion Awards next month as an honoree. Kardashian West is to be the first recipient of the CFDA Influencer Award.
According to CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb, it was all Tommy Hilfiger’s idea during the board meeting to decide the recipients of this year’s special honors. “Tommy Hilfiger said, ‘If you think about influencers and how they’ve changed our industry, I think we should acknowledge that,’” said Kolb. “[The board] all agreed that Kim was someone who has really impacted the industry and has changed the way brands are presented. She’s a friend of a lot of the designers and has had great influence on fashion globally.” Kolb said that with few exceptions — Rei Kawakubo and Johnny Depp among them — a condition of receiving a special award is mandatory attendance, to which Kardashian West agreed almost immediately.
Kolb couldn’t say whether the Influencer Award would be an ongoing thing after this year, but he did note the benefits that come with honoring a one-woman tentpole like

CFDA and LIFEWTR Partner to Boost Three Young Designers

JUST ADD WATER: Three up-and-coming designers are getting a visibility boost thanks to the strategic partnership between the CFDA and LIFEWTR, Pepsico’s premium water brand.
Adam Dalton Blake, Tiffany Huang and Ghazaleh Khalifeh have each been tapped to have their designs displayed on nearly 40 million bottles of LIFEWTR for its Series 3. All three designers are among the participants in the CFDA+ spotlight program. Each will present their collections, which will incorporate patterns from their respective Series 3 bottle designs, on the first day of New York Fashion Week.
“I’m from Taiwan, which is an island so we are always surrounded by water. So water is something that feels very natural to me,” said Huang, who developed prints with a friend skilled in augmented reality. “This is an incredible opportunity. Because when you are starting out as a young designer, it’s very hard to find people who just believe in you.”
She, Blake and Khalifeh will also receive mentoring and networking opportunities in the months ahead.
Olga Osminkina-Jones, vice president of hydration at PepsiCo Global Beverage Group, declined to comment on its financial commitment but said the goal was to help emerging fashion designers “get their names out there, to be discovered and

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, in partnership with the Accessories Council, has unveiled the participants in the inaugural Elaine Gold Launch Pad business innovation program.
The Elaine Gold Launch Pad is a four-year partnership underwritten by a $ 1.5 million donation to the CFDA Foundation. It is in honor of Elaine Gold, the accessories executive, who died in 2015.

The six designers are: Alexis Isabel of her namesake brand (footwear); Emily Adams Bode, Bode (men’s wear); Lucy Jones, Ffora (accessories, innovation); Ali Rose, Jack Burns, Mark Richardson, Genusee (optical); Maria Kazakova, Jahnkoy (women’s wear, men’s wear), and Jameel Mohammed, Khiry (jewelry).

The participants will take part in a six-month virtual residency, which will combine creative and business mentorship with micro awards totaling $ 175,000. The goal of the program is to develop visionary ideas

The Best, Worst And Wildest Looks At The CFDA Awards

The red carpet is to an awards show as the cocktail hour is to a wedding: It’s the indisputable best part.

So when the annual CFDA Awards honor the designers who make those red carpets possible, needless to say, the arrivals area is nothing short of a fashion spectacle.

This year, the likes of Kenneth Cole, Pat McGrath and Calvin Klein’s Raf Simons were honored inside the event, but our accolades ― for best, worst and wildest looks ― were awarded outside. Janelle Monae maintained her position as resident risk-taker in asymmetrical Christian Siriano, Gabrielle Union knocked it out of the park in Rodarte and Gloria Steinem wore sparkly black Michael Kors bell bottoms.

Need we say more? Check out all the most memorable looks from the 2017 CFDA Awards below.

CFDA Awards Under New Creative Direction

The CFDA Awards will have a new look this year, thanks to a change in the creative teams that will work on the awards. After years of working with Laird + Partners, the CFDA has enlisted The Creative Group, Condé Nast to develop all of the print digital materials surrounding the event, including the invitations and the nominees’ videos.
“It’s always nice to try something different and freshen it up,” said Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA, of the decision to work with The Creative Group over Laird + Partners. “We put out an RP and got a number of proposals and landed on The Creative Group.”
The invitation design, which features quotes from designers — “I don’t design clothes. I design dreams,” Ralph Lauren; “We need leaders,” Public School — in graphic, colorful blocks, will also be distributed as a poster, and will be plastered around the city leading up to the event. “We want the awards to have a sense of playfulness and also New York casualness. The quotes give a voice to designers and the members of the CFDA,” Kolb said.
The printed CFDA Awards journal has been discontinued in favor of a digital portfolio. Portraits

Suntchi’s CEO Paul Fang Talks Potential of CFDA Deal

NEW YORK — The Council of Fashion Designers of America last month forged a five-year partnership with Suntchi Brand & Technology Co. Ltd., a full-service management company with offices in Shanghai, Tokyo and New York. Through the partnership, CFDA’s 500-plus members gain access to the Chinese market and an opportunity to take advantage of Suntchi’s network of business partners in China.
Here, Paul Fang, founder and chief executive officer of Suntchi, discusses via an interpreter what type of American brands are most desirable to the Chinese consumer and the potential of the collaboration.
WWD: Which U.S. brands would have the most commercial potential in China?
Paul Fang: For many years, China has been following what the world wants, but now they’re really into the streetwear brands. In China, the biggest consumer influence is coming from streetwear, and consumer lifestyle. There are a lot of approachable lifestyle brands coming in, without naming specific brands. It’s now slowly influencing China.
WWD: Are you offering something that an American designer couldn’t do on his or her own?
P.F.: We humbly have to say that you don’t have to come through Suntchi, because that’s not what the collaboration is exclusively for. We want to basically have a platform with the CFDA. There are lot of

CFDA Stays Positive Despite Loss of Amazon Sponsorship

New York Fashion Week: Men’s may have wrapped up its most successful edition to date last week but it’s already facing a hurdle for next season: Amazon Fashion, which has been the principal sponsor since the shows started two years ago, has ended its association.
The decision comes even though the web giant is making an evermore aggressive push into fashion, and views it as one of its fastest-growing categories.
Despite Amazon’s move, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, organizers of the shows, is putting a positive spin on things, pointing to the ongoing commitment of at least two of the other sponsors — Cadillac and men’s grooming brand Axe.
“This season of NYFW: Men’s was a creative and commercial success,” the CFDA said in a statement to WWD. “We look forward to the next season taking place July 10 to 13. NYFW: Men’s continues to thrive because of the ongoing commitment of partners such as Cadillac and Axe.”
Samsung is also a sponsor and its participation will continue, said Mark Beckham, business director of Fashion Week for CFDA.
Beckman stressed that even though Amazon’s two-year contract with the men’s shows has ended, the company continues to work with the organization on other projects. He also

Forward by Elyse Walker, CFDA Link for Retail Mentorship, Capsule Collections

Online retailer Forward by Elyse Walker and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have linked to launch the CFDA & Forward Rising Talent Retail Program, in which Walker, her buying team and partners Mike Mente and Mike Karanikolas of Revolve.com will mentor up-and-coming luxury fashion designers with retail strategies as well as guiding them in the development of exclusive capsule collections for Forward.
Designers Juan Carlos Obando, Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis of Suno and Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard of Veronica Beard were hand-selected by both parties for the inaugural program, a two-day workshop in Los Angeles on best practices across various verticals through a retail market lens to achieve the next stage of growth. There will be a celebratory cocktail party Tuesday in Los Angeles at the W Hollywood.
“Forward has always been a champion of emerging designers, and with the current shake-ups in the fashion industry, from e-commerce and fast fashion to social shopping, it’s a challenging time for early talent to achieve that critical next stage in their growth,” said Walker, fashion director of Forward. “We really care how their brands are evolving and want to sit back outside the hustle and bustle of fashion week

CFDA Plans Second Jewelry Design Showcase

DISPLAY CASE: The Council of Fashion Designers of America will hold a second iteration of its CFDA Jewelry Showcase at its New York City headquarters on Oct. 26. The showcase, comprised of 17 CFDA-member labels, will act as a group press day for participants. The CFDA held its first jewelry showcase in October 2013, and has revisited the idea after an outpouring of interest from jewelry design members.
“It helped each of the participants be in front of editors that they might not have been otherwise be in front of. The power of a group is stronger than the power of one — it’s about creating a collective force,” CFDA chief executive officer Steven Kolb said of the outcome of the 2013 showcase.
Of the CFDA’s approximately 500 member labels, some 79 are jewelry designers.
Kolb said of the organization’s showcase concept: “It’s to really put a spotlight on jewelry designers; women’s fashion week is always a big deal and  gives lot of attention to women’s designers. We launched men’s fashion week this past summer and that put a significant spotlight on men’s, so it seemed natural…to categorize other segments of membership.”
This same idea will soon extend to realms outside jewelry as well.

CFDA Honors Rachel Zoe

CFDA HONORS RACHEL ZOE: The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Refinery29 and Neiman Marcus launched their Spotlight series in Los Angeles Wednesday night honoring Rachel Zoe. CFDA chief executive officer Steven Kolb, Refinery29 editor in chief Christene Barberich and Neiman’s fashion director Ken Downing hosted the dinner at Terrine that drew designers Greg Chait, Jennifer Meyer, Claire Vivier, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, Rosetta Getty, Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy and Louis Leeman along with actresses Grace Gummer, Sara Foster and Rebecca Gayheart. “This series puts a spotlight on successful women who entered the business with non-traditional backgrounds. The message that you can succeed regardless of your training is a positive one that we hope will resonate with the Refinery audience,” said Kolb, noting the new partnership with the media company, which he hopes will garner a younger audience for the CFDA. The next Spotlight series will take place in New York in June honoring Tabitha Simmons. Kolb was also busy checking out the Los Angeles manufacturing scene, with visits to BCBG, Simon Miller, Nasty Gal and Reformation. “We’re looking at ways to do an event here that contributes industry knowledge and rallies support from the city,” he said.
