Harper’s Bazaar Australia Editor in Chief Kellie Hush Quits to Launch Fashion Venture

SYDNEY – Harper’s Bazaar Australia editor in chief Kellie Hush announced on Saturday she will step down from her position after six years to launch “a unique fashion brand.”
Hush will leave the magazine on Aug. 31, with the September 2018 edition her final issue.
Deputy editor and beauty/features editor Eugenie Kelly will take over as acting editor.
A representative for publisher Bauer Media confirmed Hush has resigned but declined to comment further, noting the company will be releasing a statement on Monday.
“I’m not Anna Wintour,” said Hush, “but I think people start speculating about [editors] moving on and I made the decision, it was a personal decision, I’m doing something really exciting which I want to do.”
She added, of her abrupt announcement, which blindsided the fashion industry, “When I spoke to my publisher Fiorella Di Santo [after resigning on Friday], I was very clear I wanted to control the message. The business is in great shape, we have just smashed our September budget for advertising. At this stage our sales are up 13 percent on budget, which in this kind of market is smashing it. I wanted to leave on my own terms.”
Hush declined to disclose any other details about her new

David Levin to Retire as DXL Chief

David Levin, the longtime president and chief executive officer of Destination XL Group Inc., is to retire at the end of this year.
Heidrick & Struggles has been retained to search for a successor to helm the country’s largest big and tall men’s retailer. Candidates from within and outside the company will be considered. Levin, 66, has said he will be available to provide support during the transition period.
The company made the announcement at the same time it reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $ 3.3 million as compared to net income of $ 1.8 million in the same period last year. On a non-GAAP basis, adjusted EBITDA was $ 5 million compared to $ 10.8 million in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EBITDA for the year was $ 17.1 million, down from $ 31.6 million in the prior year.
Comparable-store sales increased 4.3 percent in the quarter and total sales were up to $ 135.5 million from $ 122.6 million last year.
Levin attributed the earnings decline to an increase in marketing expenses and said the company would cut back on its store openings to only three stores in fiscal 2018 as it seeks to lower capital expenditures. The company also said Jim Davey, a former Timberland executive, has joined DXL

Spencer Hays, Chief of Oxxford and Tom James, Dies at 80

Spencer Hays, a genteel Southerner who parlayed a career as a door-to-door Bible salesman into a multimillion-dollar men’s wear business, has died at the age of 80.
The cause of death was a brain aneurysm that he suffered in New York on Wednesday, according to a spokeswoman from Tom James, one of Hays’ companies. No services have been set at this time.
Hays, who split his time between New York and Nashville, was also the owner of Oxxford Clothes and Individualized Apparel Group and the executive chairman and majority owner of the Southwestern Company, a firm that recruits students to sell books and educational materials door-to-door.
A native of Oklahoma, Hays traveled to Nashville in 1959 during his freshman year at Texas Christian University as a salesman for the Southwestern Company. Hays joined the company full time after graduation, eventually becoming president and chief executive officer. Under his leadership, the business has grown to 12 companies under the umbrella of the Southwestern Family of Companies.
He took the skills he learned in direct selling to the men’s wear business in 1966, creating the Tom James Co. in Nashville. Tom James is credited with inventing the business of selling high-quality suits to men in their

Trump’s Chief Strategist Steve Bannon Is Making Millions Off ‘Seinfeld’

As if Donald Trump’s upset presidential victory wasn’t a bitter enough pill to swallow, he’s also officially tainted America’s favorite sitcom “Seinfeld” by appointing Steve Bannon — executive chairman of Breitbart News, a site that traffics in white nationalism — as his new White House chief strategist

Bannon has had his hands in many different business ventures over the years, but one of his most lucrative deals was helping broker an agreement between the company that produced “Seinfeld,” Rob Reiner’s Castle Rock Entertainment, and Ted Turner.

In order to compete with rival film studios, Reiner and company made a deal with Westinghouse Electric in 1989 for around $ 48 million in exchange for 15 percent of the company. Years later, when Castle Rock was sold to Turner, Westinghouse hired Bannon’s company, Bannon & Co., to advise on how to proceed with their share of Castle Rock.

“Part of the deal was that Westinghouse could either sell or hold on to whatever TV series we had,” Reiner told The Daily Beast in a recent interview. “At the time we had eight pilots, and one of them was ‘Seinfeld.’ We didn’t know if it was going to be successful or not. But as payment, Bannon advised them to stay in and hold on to their profit participation in the series, and Westinghouse said, ‘Well, if you think it’s so good, why don’t you take a piece of this instead of us giving you a fee?’ And apparently that’s what Bannon did, and he wound up with a small piece of Seinfeld that he’s had forever.”

At the time of the deal, “Seinfeld” was only in its relatively low-rated third season, so no one expected the sitcom to become the cultural phenomenon we know today. But when the series was sold into syndication and nabbed the top spot in the Nielsen ratings, all involved, including Bannon, struck gold.

As The Wrap notes, if Bannon owned even 1 percent of the estimated 3.1 billion “Seinfeld” accrues in reruns, according to The Financial Times, then Bannon & Co. has probably earned around $ 31 million since the series was cancelled in 1998.

Bannon has reportedly since used these royalties to fund a bevy of endeavors like films such as “Fire from the Heartland: The Awakening of the Conservative Woman” and the ironically titled Sarah Palin documentary, “The Undefeated,” as well as Clinton Cash, a book indicting the Clinton Foundation for corrupt practices.

“It’s crazy,” Reiner said. “When I first heard about it, it made me sick. It makes me sick. Because I had no idea. I didn’t know who he was, or that he was representing Westinghouse. So there you have it. I think The Huffington Post had the headline right: ‘Trump Hires a White Supremacist.’”

Chief Executive to Chief Justice: Taft betwixt the White House and Supreme Court

Chief Executive to Chief Justice: Taft betwixt the White House and Supreme Court

As our 27th president from 1909 to 1913, and then as chief justice of the Supreme Court from 1921 to 1930, William Howard Taft was the only man ever to lead two of America’s three governing branches. But between these two well-documented periods in office, there lies an eight-year patch of largely unexplored political wilderness. It was during this time, after all, that Taft somehow managed to rise from his ignominious defeat by both Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt in the 1912 election to achieve his lifelong goal of becoming chief justice. In the first in-depth look at this period in Taft’s singular career, eminent presidential historian Lewis L. Gould reveals how a man often derided for his lack of political acumen made his way through the hazards of Republican affairs to gain his objective. In the years between the presidency and the Supreme Court Taft was, as one commentator observed, “the greatest of globe trotters for humanity.” Gould tracks him as he crisscrosses the country from 1913 through the summer of 1921, the inveterate traveler reinventing himself as an elder Republican statesman with no visible political ambition beyond informing and serving the public. Taft was, however, working the long game, serving on the National War Labor Board, fighting for the League of Nations, teaching law and constitutional history at Yale, making up his differences with Roosevelt, all while negotiating the Republican Party’s antipathy and his own intense dislike of Woodrow Wilson, whose wartime policies and battle for the league he was bound to support. Throughout, his judicial ambition shaped his actions, with surprising adroitness. This account of Taft’s journey from the White House to the Supreme Court fills a large gap in our understanding of an important American politician and jurist. It also discloses how intricate and complicated public affairs had become during the era of World War I and its aftermath, an era in which William Howard Taft, as a shrewd commenta

By the author of acclaimed books on the bitter clashes between Jefferson and Chief Justice Marshall on the shaping of the nation’s constitutional future, and between Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney over slavery, secession, and the presidential war powers. Roosevelt and Chief Justice Hughes’s fight over the New Deal was the most critical struggle between an American president and a chief justice in the twentieth century. The confrontation threatened the New Deal in the middle of the nation’s worst depression. The activist president bombarded the Democratic Congress with a fusillade of legislative remedies that shut down insolvent banks, regulated stocks, imposed industrial codes, rationed agricultural production, and employed a quarter million young men in the Civilian Conservation Corps. But the legislation faced constitutional challenges by a conservative bloc on the Court determined to undercut the president. Chief Justice Hughes often joined the Court’s conservatives to strike down major New Deal legislation. Frustrated, FDR proposed a Court-packing plan. His true purpose was to undermine the ability of the life-tenured Justices to thwart his popular mandate. Hughes proved more than a match for Roosevelt in the ensuing battle. In grudging admiration for Hughes, FDR said that the Chief Justice was the best politician in the country. Despite the defeat of his plan, Roosevelt never lost his confidence and, like Hughes, never ceded leadership. He outmaneuvered isolationist senators, many of whom had opposed his Court-packing plan, to expedite aid to Great Britain as the Allies hovered on the brink of defeat. He then led his country through World War II.

Mind Over Matter: Why Intellectual Capital is the Chief Source of Wealth

Praise for Mind Over Matter Why Intellectual capital is tHe Chief Source of Wealth”Ron Baker has written another great book on the thoughts and theories on intellectual capital. As usual, he has an awesome depth of content, knowledge, and thought. A great read.”Reed Holden, founder, Holden Advisors Corp., www.holdenadvisors.com, and coauthor, The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing and Pricing with Confidence: 10 Ways to Stop Leaving Money on the Table”At a time when the virtues that made America greatindividualism, hard work, and free tradeare openly debated by well-meaning politicians, Ron Baker gives us Mind Over Matter. It is a story detailing the triumph of human spirit, imagination, and creativity. Ron tells us what the ‘knowledge economy’ really means. He gives a prescription for transforming human and intellectual capital into the foundation for sustainable prosperity. Mind Over Matter is a provocative book deserving of a thoughtful read. It is a timeless message to be treasured for generations.”Robert G. Cross, Chairman and CEO, Revenue Analytics, Inc., www.revenueanalytics.com”Ron Baker is an absolute master at challenging the ‘physical fallacy,’ e.g., the basis on which we assign value to businesses by focusing on tangible rather than intangible assets. This book builds on his previous books and helps the reader understand how critical intellectual capital is to the key to success in the twenty-first century. Ron pulls from the greatest business thinkers and economists,?from Drucker to Karl Sveiby as well as current company success stories to fund his rich gold mine of proof. The biggest benefit of the book is to change the paradigm of those who are the passive keepers of the ‘books.’ This is a must-read for anybody who wants to flourish in the age of intellectual capital.”Sheila Kessler, PhD, President, Competitive Edge, www.CompetitiveEdge.com”This book helps us understand some of the origins and sources that have led Ron Baker to the many contributi
