Transgender TLC Star Reveals Her Parents Put Her in Conversion Therapy: ‘A Childhood Nightmare’

Lost in Transition star Karen is revealing the rocky road to living as her true self.

Though her wife Beverly — who she’s divorcing — supports her transition, growing up, her family sought answers in a destructive manner.

While getting fitted for a hair piece as she begins to present as female in PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at this week’s episode, Karen tells her stylist about the time she first realized she identified as a woman.

“When I was probably in the fifth grade, I didn’t like being a Boy Scout. I wanted to be a Girl Scout. My mom said, ‘You can’t be in the Girl Scouts. That’s for girls, you’re a boy.’ And that’s when I told my mom that I wanted to be a girl,” she says. “I don’t think she really took me seriously at first, but some months later her and my father both realized that something was wrong or different about me. And unfortunately they went to the Church and asked for guidance, and the Church recommended conversation therapy.”

“And then a childhood nightmare began for me, for about a year,” she tells the camera in an interview.

Lost in Transition airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC

Olivia Munn Surprises Her Mom with Massive Makeover of Her Childhood Home

Olivia Munn is giving one mother of a gift!

The X-Men actress, 37, is quick to admit that her childhood in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was far from quiet. “At my house there’s a lot of screaming going on,” she says in the latest episode of MyHouzz, adding that her family is “very blunt and sarcastic.”

Her mom, Kim, who was born and raised in Vietnam, is at the center of the spirited group, always playing host to their family and friends.

“My mom thinks that cooking is the most important thing,” she says. “There’s always an open door policy for dinner.”

But the kitchen, living room and dining room in her home were far from functional for Kim and Munn’s stepfather, Sam. Not only were the countertops too tall — “She’s a hobbit,” Munn jokes — but the overall layout wasn’t conducive for their big gatherings. So for the ultimate Mother’s Day gift, Munn sought out Travis Morelock of MIDMODERNdesign and together they transformed the dark, dreary and cluttered abode into a bright, open and modern retreat for the couple.

“If there’s anybody in the world that I think deserves it, it’s her,” Munn says.

In the kitchen, Morelock cleverly borrowed some space from the attic (the existence of which was a surprise to Munn) to raise the ceilings, and also incorporated extendable racks in the cabinets so Kim wouldn’t have to stand on a step stool.

The walk-in pantry is an immediate favorite of Kim’s when she’s finally able to see the space, however the rice cooker and steamer built into the island clearly take the top spots among the new features.

“All of the functionality is custom made to fit your tiny height,” Munn tells her ecstatic mom. Kim adds, “I’m very happy and I can’t wait to cook and invite a lot of people by to see my new house.”

The sectional sofa in the living room is a smart solution that allows everyone equal access to the TV. The dining room now sports modern light fixtures and a plenty of seating for parties. An old fireplace was also replaced with built-in shelves for her collectibles, although Munn notes Kim, “has a lot of dolls for a grown woman.”

While Kim says she is “very, very grateful” for the update, it’s Munn who is thankful she can give back to her role model.

“My mother and all of her uniqueness has definitely shaped who I am today,” Munn says. “My mom always instilled this feeling of self worth in me, and that I knew that my dreams mattered even if they were close to impossible. Without that I wouldn’t have even tried it in Hollywood.”

Selena Gomez Visits Childhood Home and Wonders If It ‘Could Have Been Better Than My Life Today’

Selena Gomez spent part of the weekend reflecting on her past — and taking a literal trip down memory lane.

The 25-year-old singer shared a photo of herself perched on the doorstep of the Texas home where she spent her youth, on Saturday, writing on Instagram, “The home I grew up in, from birth to 13… (no one was home when I knocked this time lol).”

“I visit this place every chance I get,” Gomez said. “In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you.”

There have recently been strains between Gomez and her mom Mandy Teefey, noticed by fans after the duo unfollowed each other on Instagram. But their recent estrangement wasn’t sparked solely by pop star’s newly rekindled relationship with Justin Bieber.

“It’s more complicated than just fighting over a guy,” a source close to the family previously told PEOPLE. “Mandy and Selena have had their ups and down before. This isn’t the first time.”

Though the mother and daughter weren’t on speaking terms toward the end of last year, Gomez “also wants to give her mom some space,” added the insider. “When they fight, they fight hard. But when they love, they also love hard.”

Multiple sources previously told PEOPLE Gomez’s family was concerned about the on-again romance and that Bieber was determined to show her loved ones he had matured.

An insider also confirmed that Teefey, 41, had voluntarily sought treatment at a hospital in Los Angeles in December but dismissed a report that it was because of an argument with her daughter over Bieber. “It’s been a stressful time for Mandy and she made the decision herself to go to the hospital and make sure everything was okay,” said the source.

After ringing in the new year together in Mexico, Bieber and Gomez headed to a private gym session in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

A source previously told PEOPLE that they welcomed 2018 in Cabo with friends, adding that the pair are “doing great.”

Christian Dior’s Childhood Revisited in Exhibition

HOMING INSTINCTS: “What can I say? My life and my style owe almost everything to its location and its architecture,” said Christian Dior of his childhood home, Les Rhumbs, in Granville, Normandy, which now houses the Christian Dior Museum.
Unfolding across three floors, a new exhibition at the site, “Christian Dior and Granville: the Source of a Legend,” seeks to recapture the atmosphere of the era when Dior lived there as a boy, drawing on archival documents, and the location’s influence on his designs.
Dior’s parents bought the grand villa, with its winter garden located in a park, in 1905. The event marks both the 20th anniversary of the museum and the 70th anniversary of the house of Dior.

The rooms on the site’s ground floor are themed around specific aspects that helped shape the designer’s personality, such as the Japanese exoticism of the entrance hall, the rococo décor of the grand drawing room, and the colors and scents of the garden, which are said to have fired his artistic flair and dreamer side.
The bedrooms on the site’s first floor evoke each member of Dior’s family, meanwhile, mixing portraits, photographs and personal objects with

Vladimir Putin’s Childhood Besties Defend Their ‘Petty’ Pal In ‘SNL’ Spoof

Saturday Night Live” poked fun this weekend at Vladimir Putin’s reported personal vendetta against Hillary Clinton.

Vanessa Bayer and Fred Armisen, playing two of the Russian president’s childhood friends, stopped by the “Weekend Update” segment to champion their lifelong bestie amid reports that he was directly responsible for his country interfering in the U.S. presidential election.

But after initially defending their “focused” and “disciplined” long-time pal, they admitted he could be “pretty petty” — and in hushed tones recalled a series of times when he’d turned on them following what they assumed was a trivial incident.

While not directly referred to, the skit was clearly mocking reports that Putin oversaw the interference as revenge for Clinton’s 2011 call for an investigation into his country’s parliamentary elections ― a reason that “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert said last week was “lame.”

Check it out in the clip above.

Dr. Ron Taffel, one of the country’s most sought-after child-rearing experts, draws on decades of counseling experience and extensive conversations with parents nationwide to offer an original and inspiring analysis of the distinctive challenges parents face in raising children today. He also introduces a breakthrough approach for guiding kids?from children to teens?in ways that bring out the best in both kidsand parents in these twenty-first-century times. With warmth and clarity, Taffel, who is himself a parent struggling with these issues, helps us to understand our sons and daughters in an entirely new way: as a distinctive? free-est? generation, born to the first generation of? post-baby boomer? parents and the products of a decades-long cultural sea change that intensified in the nineties. As a result, kids of all ages are now a bundle of contradictions: they exude entitlement, back talk shockingly, negotiate endlessly, worship celebrity, do ten things at once, conduct independent lives online, and engage in high-risk behavior at younger ages. Yet, they are also far more open with their parents and each other than kids in prior generations, are strikingly generous and empathetic, and care deeply about ethical issues. In addition, their high-speed multitasking is preparing them for the demands of the future. The key question, then, is how to encourage the good while steering them away from thebad. Taffel believes today’s parents, having lived through the beginning phases of the same social changes, are uniquely qualified to bring out kids’ best?and he shows you how. Using a wealth of examples, he walks parents through innovative methods to get children’s and teens’ attent.

Tom Hanks’ Brother Secretly Voices Woody When Tom Is Busy, AKA Your Childhood Is A Lie

If you’ve ever had a Woody toy, video game or — in a few cases — seen a “Toy Story” movie, you’ve assumed the voice you heard coming from the cowboy in the yellow-plaid shirt was that of Tom Hanks.

Well, reach for the sky, because there’s been a snake in your boot/ears this whole time. This town was big enough for two all along and the dual-sheriffs are actually Tom Hanks and his brother, Jim Hanks.

UK-based comedian Graham Norton used his show to confront Tom about this mystery back in 2011, bringing out a Woody doll and asking if he had provided the voice.

“No, it’s my brother Jim,” Tom responded smirking, and then continued on to explain, “There are so many computer games and video things and Jim just works on those all year long.”

Clarifying how this initial idea came about, Tom said that it had to do with him being too busy to handle all the extra voice work. He recalled to Norton, being asked rhetorically, “You don’t want to do this,” to which he appears to still respond, “No, get my brother Jim, he’ll do it.”

As my co-worker put it, this means “your child’s cute little Woody toys are a f**king lie.” Another surprised and uncharacteristically outraged co-worker added, “everything is bulls**t.”

How could this be?

Jim Hanks is an actor in his own right, with a long list of credits since 1992. One such recent role in 2015 was for a short titled, “The Other Brother,” where he plays the sibling of a famous Hollywood producer. His character’s job in the short is to give tram tours around Universal Studios, showing off the more well-known brother’s success.

Over a dozen credits are from his work voicing Woody in “Toy Story” properties. Many of these are for video games, but you’ve most likely heard his work in the popular doll versions of Woody (which Norton showed) or if you’re of a certain generation, perhaps in the 2000 movie, “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins.”

Jim can manipulate his voice to sound almost exactly like his brother’s, which is part of the reason why you’ve never noticed the difference. The other part, of course, being that you didn’t expect a beloved actor and Pixar’s first franchise to betray you.

In the video below, Jim shows off his relative talent, while also admitting what scares him about the level of fame that follows his brother.

The Huffington Post reached out to Jim Hanks’ representation, along with multiple producers from his early ”Toy Story” roles, but nobody wished to comment on the story.

With no further answers to console your shaken memories, it’s time to find your old Woody toy, pull its string and somehow accept that it has actually been pulling your string this whole time.

“You’re my favorite deputy,” Jim Hanks tells you in Tom Hanks’ voice as Woody.

You should have always known you were second string.

7 Childhood Trends From The 2015 Paris Couture Week Runways

Haute couture is often viewed as spectacle rather than practical wear. But here we are at the end of Paris Couture Fashion Week, thinking of all the things we could wear from designers like Elie Saab and Fendi

If there’s one trend we noticed it’s that some of our childhood outfits made it down the runway. Remember the Champagne-colored Jessica McClintock gowns from junior prom? Ralph & Russo is trying to make them a thing. Oh, and striped tights? Looks like Jean Paul Gaultier is calling for a resurgence.

Check out the childhood trends that sauntered down the runway and be inspired to play some dress-up this weekend.

This Possible ‘Harry Potter’ Couple Would Ruin Harry Potter’s Childhood Even More

Harry Potter might want to keep away from the latest edition of The Quibbler.

Following a recent Instagram post, the online speculation is that Harry’s dad, James Potter, aka actor Robbie Jarvis, may be dating Luna Lovegood, aka actress Evanna Lynch. And if Harry’s childhood wasn’t ruined before, it definitely is now:

That photo isn’t all, though. Despite the fact that E! wasn’t given conformation from Jarvis’ reps that the two were dating, other cute photos just seem to add to the evidence. Take this one for example:

Trying on hats with @msevylynch. Which one of us looks better? #fancy

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

And check out this one where they apparently took Polyjuice Potion and transformed into owls. Nice try, James and Luna, but we know it’s you:

Owls!

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

So why is this such a big deal? OK, first, let’s skip past the fact that in “Harry Potter,” Luna came in during Ginny’s year and is younger than Harry. Just forget that. But didn’t Harry also take Luna to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party? Now his dad might be taking her out? Oh, and what about Lily Potter, James? What about Lily?

Voldemort has done some pretty messed up things to Harry Potter before, but this might be crossing the line.

That being said, we wish all the happiness in the world to the potential couple because they are just actors and Harry Potter isn’t real. Or that’s what people want you to believe, anyway.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post’s requests for comment.

Dad Captures Beautiful Photos Of Son’s Childhood After Almost Losing Him

One morning in 2013, dad Adrian Murray and his wife Michelle experienced every parent’s nightmare. They woke up to find their 10-month-old son Emerson unresponsive in his crib.

The parents rushed their baby to the hospital, where he remained for three days. After severals rounds of tests, doctors still could not provide an answer as to what exactly was wrong with Emerson. A few days later, the Murrays brought their son back to the hospital after they found him unresponsive again. The baby was put on anti-seizure medication.

Emerson’s ordeal was an eye-opening experience for his father Adrian, who was inspired to take photographs of his son’s childhood. “I felt like life goes by in an instant and that I needed to try and capture those moments of wonder,” he told The Huffington Post in an email.

Murray’s photos of Emerson depict the little boy in moments of pure innocence and joy. Drawing inspiration from some of his own favorite childhood stories like Winnie the Pooh, Murray’s photos “revolve around the idea of adventure and discovery,” he explained.

“Our kids are bombarded by digital media, lights, and plastic. I wanted something closer to what child is all about, wonder and discovery,” Murray added. “That’s why we try to go to a park, or explore nature as often as we can.”

Today, 2-year-old Emerson is in good health and no longer needs to take anti-seizure meds. This past February, the toddler became a big brother to “his partner in crime” Greyson.

The below images are just a sample of Adrian Murray’s beautiful photos of his happy little boys on adventures. You can view more on his photography site, Facebook page, and 500px profile.

Mom Captures A Special Part Of Childhood In ‘Comfort Objects’ Photo Series

As a mom of three, photographer Anna Ream is no stranger to the concept of “comfort objects” — the blankets, stuffed animals, dolls and other items that children latch on to for emotional release and support.

In the fall of 2012, she decided to make those very comfort objects the subject of a stunning photo series of the same name. “I was pondering objects representative of childhood and wanted to focus a body of work on the 2-to-6-year-old age range,” she told The Huffington Post in an email, adding, “It is one of my favorite developmental stages because children are becoming more independent, their language skills are developing rapidly and they are becoming more aware of the world around them.”

To date, Ream has photographed over 70 children with their comfort objects. She started with her own kids and family, as well as children from their preschool. From there, the project snowballed as she photographed other children through community connections and even reached out to strangers.

“Childhood comfort objects seem to me like a very real and authentic example of how tangible things can provide emotional comfort,” the photographer said.

Ream’s children are 13, 8, and 3 years old, and they have all had comfort objects at some point in their lives. When Ream began the project, her middle child Eowyn had decided she was too old for her stuffed dog named Ginger. Eowyn handed the dog down to her younger brother, but a few months later, she found herself crying in the middle of a difficult day. “I need Ginger,” she told her mom.

“For me, this story illustrates both the intense emotional connection children have with their object, but also how the object is a part of what gets left behind in the process of normal childhood development,” Ream said. “As a parent, there is some sadness and loss associated with those transitions.”

Detoxing Childhood

Detoxing Childhood

When Sue Palmer wrote Toxic Childhood, her ground-breaking book that showed how problems of diet, education, fitness and mental health problems were all inter-related, she created a national debate. Understanding Childhood Obesity

Understanding Childhood Obesity

Almost fourteen percent of American children over age six and twelve percent of adolescents are obese, more than double the rate of thirty years ago. Although there are countless diet and weight-loss books on the market, few of them explain in jargon-free terms the basic factors, the body processes that can lead to childhood obesity, and the research currently underway to combat this growing health risk. In Understanding Childhood Obesity , Dr. J. Clinton Smith has created a comprehensive guide covering nearly every field of obesity research. He explores causes and methods of control, the body's physical and chemical make up, prevention strategies, new treatments and behavior modifications, and future research possibilities. Smith closely examines the genetic and environmental factors that can lead to childhood obesity. For parents, he answers the all-important question of whether an obese child needs help, and he outlines traditional diet and exercise treatments as well as aggressive medical and surgical techniques. He also introduces readers to the "continuous care and problem solving model" that has proved valuable in pediatric treatment clinics. Featured are: An explanation of how obesity is identified by using a child's height and weight.; A frank discussion of the health consequences of obesity.; A review of how the body breaks down food for energy and how and why the body stores energy.; An examination of the powerful environmental factors affecting childhood weight gain.; A thorough gathering of the treatments and research, and a view of exciting new discoveries in genetics and body chemistry. J. Clinton Smith is an associate professor of pediatrics and an assistant professor of preventive medicine at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He has taught at Louisiana State University, practiced privately in pediatrics, and has served as Medical Director to the Tennessee State Department of Health and Environment and as Executive Director of the Division of Medicaid to the Office of the Governor, State of Mississippi.
