Ask 10 fashion editors what’s truly worth investing in for fall and at least half will say it’s a gorgeous coat. Outerwear is visible all season, instantly outfit-making, and remarkably practical. But what if you drained your savings on a brand-new one last year, only to find that it’s feeling tired for fall 2015? Enter: The Fixer. I’m here to make that baby feel brand-new again.
What you should do: Find a tailor you can trust (true story: I’ve baked brownies for mine on occasion so he’ll give my projects a little extra attention). Bring him photos you’ve swiped from street-style blogs, Pinterest, and magazines, of what you’d like your new coat to look like, keeping these ideas in mind for inspiration:
1. Recut, rework, reimagine: A long duster coat no longer your speed? Have anywhere from a few inches to a few feet hacked off to create a swingy little jacket. Still not feeling it? Remove the sleeves for a cool vest you’ll layer with everything this season.
2. Add some pizzazz: Statement outerwear is having a major moment (witness: every runway from Alexander Wang to Zero+ Maria Cornejo)—a classic peacoat just isn’t going to cut it this season. Solution? Embellishments in every form. Buy a couple of yards of bold-color leather or a cool metallic tweed and have it layered on top of your boring wool lapels. Add a bit of silk or suede fringe to the under-sleeves and at the hemline. Scour local thrift shops or Etsy for unique replacement buttons—all of these are easy-to-make-but-totally-impactful swaps.
3. Fake it, DIY style. If these projects sound too intimidating, expensive, or time-consuming, take matters into your own hands. A cool new belt can work wonders (and magically make you look like you’ve lost five pounds). A removable faux-fur collar can be tied on top to look like it’s part of the coat itself, and a bold set of gloves, a hat, or a scarf can make snoozy outerwear feel alive again!
