We Tried It: Working Out in an N.Y.C. Studio That’s So Cold, Gloves and Hats Are Encouraged

What It Is: The Brrrn

Who Tried It: Grace Gavilanes, PEOPLE.com associate editor

Level of Difficulty: 7/10 The workout moves themselves weren’t super difficult, but something tells me the class’ colder temps definitely had something to do with my ability to withstand the fatigue for so long.

I didn’t know what to expect when I got off the train and began walking toward N.Y.C.’s new Brrrn studio. I had received an invite the day before to try out one of their three class offerings: Yoga-inspired Strength and Mobility Series, Core and Cardio Slide Board Series, and Battle Rope Infused Hit Series. As someone who’s eager to get back into her regular workout schedule, I opted for the third, a 45-minute class designed to improve strength and conditioning with dumbbell circuit training and battle rope exercises. I was sure it would help jumpstart my fitness journey.

The only catch? Each workout takes place in a studio with below-average temps, depending on the level of activity the class requires. In fact, wearing beanies and gloves (which can be purchased at Brrrn) during class is encouraged. The class I was taking was set at 45°F, the coldest of the three. The others are set at 60°F and 55°F, respectively.

Naturally, I had a few questions beforehand: What do I wear? Will I catch a cold? Will this make me as uncomfortable as hot yoga had that one time?

I started doubting myself during my walk over. I questioned the thickness of my leggings, wondered if I should have opted for a cotton shirt (per the invite email’s recommendation) rather than the lycra one I was wearing, and asked myself if I was even ready to put my body through such an intense class when the most physical activity I had done over the past month was lightly sprinting to a table in our office, where cake was being served.

But it was too late. I had already made it to 20th street, and was just around the corner from the studio. I walked up the few stairs and made it inside, which was at a nice temperature. I was greeted by one of Brrrn’s cofounders, Johnny Adamic, who asked me if I was looking forward to the class. “I’m really nervous!” I said within seconds of being inside. He was understanding but also assured me that I would be “just fine.”

As I walked in to the class, I was a little taken aback. It wasn’t that cold. But to be fair, I do think my reaction went hand-in-hand with my initial freakout. I mentally prepared myself for freezing temps and was met with a super brisk fall day. I felt good as I switched between two stations: battle ropes and free weights.

With the benefits of burning more calories and delaying fatigue (and going even harder for the duration of your workout sesh!), exercising in a 45°F fitness studio has been a long time coming. “Cold has been the backdrop of the human experience for millennia,” Adamic has said. “But we’ve engineered cold out of our lives. Now we live in these climate-controlled environments of 72°F from the time we wake up until we go to bed, but routine exposure to cooler temperatures is actually good for us. We are reuniting the cold back with exercise — where it belongs.”

I wasn’t shivering in class. I felt the hairs on my arms slightly raise during short rest periods but since we were constantly moving, I was comfortable and motivated to complete the moves. I felt energized. I probably could have kept going an extra 15 minutes.

The studio also provides “dessert” in the form of a communal infrared sauna. It’s the same price and length of time as a workout class, but the only difference is you’re experiencing warmth. Its not suffocating, but a welcoming dry heat. “It’s a nice way to chill and make friends,” Adamic told me of the eight-seater sauna.

The Verdict: As someone who’s pretty paranoid about getting sick, I was initially nervous about doing countless jump squats and renegade rows in a cold room, voluntarily. Spoiler alert: It’s been three days and I’m feeling perfectly healthy. Just really sore all over, which is totally expected after all those bicep curls and lunges. While I felt cool throughout the class, I was still sweating. Mission accomplished.

Netflix’s New True Crime Series ‘The Keepers’ Searches For Answers In 47-Year-Old Cold Case

There were a lot of things for true crime junkies to get excited about when Netflix released the teaser for its new series “The Keepers”: an unsolved murder, a missing nun, corruption, a possible Catholic school cover-up.

For all its promises, the series — from documentary veteran Ryan White, who also directed “The Case Against 8” and “Good Ol’ Freda” — delivers. The seven episodes center around the 1969 disappearance and death of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a young nun who taught English at a Baltimore-area Catholic high school and was beloved by students. Two months after Cesnik failed to return home from a routine shopping trip, her body was found by hunters in a remote wooded area five miles from her apartment. Investigations revealed she had suffered a mortal wound to her head. Her killer was never found.

“The Keepers” is as addictive and compelling as “Making a Murderer,” the documentary series that ran on the streaming network in late 2015, spurring theories, sprawling message board discussions and an acute hunger for more true crime stories. (The docuseries are entirely different, of course, but comparisons will be inevitable.)

Any good documentary needs narration, especially for one as layered, and with as many individuals involved, as this. While some of the key players in the story that unfolds surrounding Cesnik’s death have also since died, many are still around to keep the story alive — namely, a group of students at Archbishop Keough High School where the nun taught. It’s been more than 40 years, but the women are able to recount their memories of their former teacher as though they had just graduated.

Perhaps their sharpness is a result of running through those formative years over and over in their heads, trying to search their memories for anything that could explain Cesnik’s abrupt disappearance. Years after graduating, her former students have created a circle of amateur detectives, knocking on doors, looking up records and sharing information. They want to find out something, anything, about who killed their teacher.

Leading the crew are Gemma Hoskins and Abbie Schaub, a retired teacher and nurse, respectively. In the series, we meet Hoskins sitting down at a restaurant and inquiring about their chardonnay. When she discovers that they serve Yellow Tail, she answers with a laugh, “Oh, that’s fine, that’s what I drink at home. Only.”

Meanwhile, we are introduced to Schaub as she waits in line at a local library, stack of papers in hand. “We’ve been using your excellent services for about two years,” she tells the librarian in a high, warm voice when it’s her turn. “We’ve been looking into an unsolved murder case.”

It’s not the kind of thing you’d immediately expect to hear from Schaub, who comes off as a studious, cheerful grandmotherly type. She and Hoskins make an unlikely team, but one that easily becomes central to the series. In the first episode, Hoskins recalls her excitement upon walking into Cesnik’s class at 13 to learn they’d be reading The Scarlet Letter, describing her wonder that “a cool nun” would be teaching the somewhat scandalous classic. Cesnik, we learn, was supportive and eager to listen to her students, a rare source of comfort in a strict religious and academic environment.

“Gemma’s been the Nancy Drew, I think,” Schaub tells the camera while she and Hoskins are sitting side-by-side at a kitchen table, discussing their efforts to find more information about those fateful months in 1969. “She’s good at getting people to talk to her.”

“Abby does amazing research, like no one I’ve ever met,” Hoskins adds. Hoskins likes to pick up the phone and talk to people, which Schaub says is perfect — she does not. It’s hard not to fall in love with the idea of two old high school acquaintances teaming up to solve a long-cold case, proving that the yearning to solve a grisly crime is not confined to whatever notions of detectives we typically see on screen. Other former classmates, journalists and retired law enforcement join the two women in their search for answers.

Hoskins and Schaub’s passion for justice is inspiring, a torch through the darkness that will emerge most pointedly in the series’ second episode. It’d be inaccurate to paint the series solely as a thrilling caper — real traumas occurred within the halls of Archbishop Keough, the effects of which carry through to the present day. The pair of women leading the amateur search for answers provides a framework for the rest of the shocking narrative to reveal itself, a positive and endearing aspect of a tale with much abuse of power and darkness, where the possibility for true justice feels as long buried as its subject.

“The Keepers” begins streaming on Netflix Friday, May 19.

Spencer Pratt And Heidi Montag Are Bringing A Child Into This Cold, Dark World

We’ll never doubt the power of crystals again.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are expecting their first child together after nearly eight years of wedded reality TV bliss.

The couple, who’ve become a reality TV staple after appearing on the MTV series “The Hills,” announced the news of their growing family on Wednesday in peak Speidi fashion with an Us Weekly cover story

“The look on her face, I can’t even describe it,” Spencer told the magazine about the moment he found out he was going to be a father. “She was literally glowing. I thought she was about to say she made muffins or banana bread.”

“Heidi said, ‘I’m pregnant.’ I was like, ‘Whoa, that’s way more exciting than banana bread!’” he continued.

Montag has long expressed her desire to have a child, dating as far back as the infamous fake pregnancy storyline early on in “The Hills,” but the two have held off in recent years due to their appearances on a slew of reality TV shows.

“I wanted a baby three years ago. Spencer was a little hesitant. Then one thing after another came up. We had work obligations, like ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ in the U.K., which I did not want to be pregnant for,” Montag explained. “I’m actually really thankful we waited. I thought I was ready in my twenties, but with everything we had going on, it just wouldn’t have been a good situation for us.”

The 30-year-old mother-to-be is three months along, with a due date of October 19. The couple have chosen not to reveal the sex of the child, but both are hoping for a boy.

“It might never be the perfect time, so we said, let’s move forward,” she added. “We had all these conversations. We’re older, we have more life experience. Nothing is holding us back.”

You know what this means? Montag, her famous frenemy, Lauren Conrad, and Whitney Port are all pregnant at the same time and will likely deliver within months of each other. “The Hills” stars Audrina Patridge and Kristin Cavallari have also both welcomed baby girls in the last two years.

We’re sure they’re all thrilled by the coincidence.

Mandy Moore Throws Cold Water On ‘Tangled’ And ‘Frozen’ Fan Theory

Sorry fans, Mandy Moore has outright rejected the theory that connects Disney’s 2010 animated feature “Tangled” with its 2013’s animated blockbuster “Frozen.”

Fans have theorized that “Frozen’s” king and queen of Arendelle were on their way to the wedding of Rapunzel and Flynn from “Tangled” when their ship sank and they died. Fans believe that’s why the newlywed couple make a cameo in “Frozen” as they are obligated to be at Elsa’s coronation ceremony.

It’s a rather disturbing theory and Moore, who voices Rupunzel in the Disney Channel’s new “Tangled” TV series, as well as the 2010 movie, was not having it.

“That’s a pretty morbid fan theory,” Moore said while looking slightly horrified in an interview with TVLine, published Friday. “It feels like someone is really reaching, like into ‘Lost’ territory or something.”

“There is no connection as far as I know,” she continued. But I don’t think there is any connection. No. But sure, people can imagine what they will all day. That’s their prerogative.”

The theory actually goes a step further and connects the sunken ship that appears in Disney’s the “Little Mermaid” as potentially belonging to to the king and queen of Arendelle.

It’s all very creative and the co-director of “Frozen,” Chris Buck, further connected films within the Disney universe when he participated in a Reddit AMA in August 2015.

According to Buck, the king and queen didn’t die on that ship. Rather, they washed up on the shore of a “jungle island,” where the queen gave birth to a baby boy. Together they all lived in a tree house before tragedy struck and the king and queen were eaten by a leopard. The baby boy was left to be “raised by gorillas.” If that sounds like the start to Disney’s “Tarzan,” it’s no coincidence that Buck also directed that movie and further helps cement the theory that all Disney films are somehow connected.

Nearly 41 Years Later, Cold Case Murder of Righteous Brothers Singer’s Ex-Wife Finally Solved

The 1976 murder of Karen Klaas, the ex-wife of Righteous Brothers‘ singer Bill Medley, has finally been solved according to multiple reports — though the public will have to wait until Monday to find out just who did it.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators announced Friday that they’ve scheduled a press conference for Jan. 30 where they will finally reveal who killed the Hermosa Beach mother of two, The Daily Breeze reported.

Authorities said the case was solved through the use of “familial DNA” which helped identify the killer, the Associated Press reported. It’s a controversial technique that allows investigators to search law enforcement databases to identify likely relatives of suspects.

It is unclear whether any arrest has been made in the case, the AP reported.

Monday marks the 41st anniversary of the crime that would lead to Klaas’ death.

She was attacked on Jan. 30, 1976 as she returned home from dropping off her 4-year-old child at day care, CBS Los Angeles reported. The attacker strangled, beat, and raped her, authorities said. Neighbors found her in her home when they could not contact her. She died several days later. Klaas was 32.

Two witnesses described a shaggy-haired, bearded man in a trench coat and blue jeans leaving Klaas’ house — but the suspect was never found. Divorced from Medley and remarried, her husband was ruled out as a suspect, CBS L.A. reported.

Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Monday’s press conference is expected to be attended by members of Klaas’ family.

Medley and Klaas (then Karen O’Grady) married in 1964, and divorced in 1970. They have one son together, Darrin, born in 1965.

Decolonization and the Cold War

Decolonization and the Cold War

The Cold War and decolonization transformed the twentieth century world. This volume brings together an international line-up of experts to explore how these transformations took place and expand on some of the latest threads of analysis to help inform our understanding of the links between the two phenomena. The book begins by exploring ideas of modernity, development, and economics as Cold War and postcolonial projects and goes on to look at the era’s intellectual history and investigate how emerging forms of identity fought for supremacy. Finally, the contributors question ideas of sovereignty and state control that move beyond traditional Cold War narratives. Decolonization and the Cold War emphasizes new approaches by drawing on various methodologies, regions, themes, and interdisciplinary work, to shed new light on two topics that are increasingly important to historians of the twentieth century.

Adam Lyons Wants You to Get “Ice Cold”

Adam Lyons is a little emotional. It’s now midnight in London and June has turned into July. He is sitting in his London flat and received the e-mail. His debut album is now available on iTunes. The 22 year-old tweets out another link to his followers, but this time he attaches a screen-shot of the standard e-mail iTunes sends, stating his order (the order of his album) is ready. His group of loyal fans, who have supported him for a few years now, are busy tweeting up a storm in-excitement. Adam is busy engaging with them as they all celebrate this milestone in his career.

The debut album is called Ice Cold. The 15-track album is a mixture of many genres including Pop, R&B, and Soul. The album showcases Lyons vocal ability and range. No song sounds the same. It also showcases his talent as a songwriter. Every single track was written solely by Lyons. The album was produced by Uplink from Germany. The duo and Lyons started working and collaborating on this album over a year ago.

“It is filled with emotion, passion, energy and commitment.” Lyons states on his album. “I can’t wait for people to have the album, it will be so fulfilling to share the body of work with the loyal supporters and hopefully attract new fans.” Lyons states.

The first single off the album is also called “Ice Cold.” “Summer is my favorite season.” Lyons exclaims. “When Uplink sent me the track to write and record, it instantly gave me a feel good, chilled Californian vibe. I just fell in love with the track.” he states.

A music video for the single was shot in Los Angeles this past May. Adam sought out Mac Cleary, the director of his first music video “Psycho” to helm this project. “Marc is a very unique individual with a very creative mind. I love how fresh and cool he is and I am in love with his work.” Lyons states.

Cleary also only has positive things to say about working with Adam. “Adam’s always such a team player.” Cleary states. “Whether it’s getting half naked and dunking in a bathtub in public in the freezing cold, or slow dancing with a drag queen on Hollywood Boulevard he’s always 100% fully committed and never questions anything.”

The music video itself was a little different than the previous ones Lyons has done (This was his third). “It was incredibly fun, we basically had a day out and made a video of it. It was very free spirited and stress free. What makes this video unique is our relaxed approach to the shoot and the awesome people involved. My cheeks were hurting from laughing throughout the day. It was a very long day and by the time we wrapped, I was ready for bed, however we had to fit in a few drinks in Hollywood first.” He says with a laugh. The music video was officially released onVevo on June 16th.

While music is his passion, his other passion is dance. Lyons is currently one of Rita Ora’s dancers during her 2015 UK festival tour. Stops already included the Radio 1 Big Weekend, Capital FM Summertime Ball and Wireless Festival. This past winter he performed The Royal Albert Hall with Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton and Erin as one of the six world class ensemble dancers for their Christmas Show followed by the UK/Ireland Tour of ‘That’s Entertainment’. He has taught and performed all over the UK and beyond.

In the last two years, I have written about Adam Lyons numerous times. As someone who is not in his field of work, it has been interesting watching from the sidelines as he navigates the interesting, exciting, and sometimes chaotic entertainment world. His journey has not been easy and it is not over yet. However if anything this has helped to shape Lyons into the true artist that he is today. Lyons drive and determination for success in whatever he does is apparent and can even be felt from across the pond. Even though it has been a few years, it still surprises me the amount of time and energy he puts in every one of his projects. I see his career continuing to progress as time goes on. I can’t guess where it will end up, but what I can say is Adam Lyons will give everything he has on his way there.

Adam Lyon’s debut album Ice Cold is available on iTunes as well as other music streaming services and stores. To view the video for the single “Ice Cold” you can view it here. For more about Adam Lyons, visit his official website.

Cold War Infrastructure for Strategic Air Command (SAC): The Bomber Mission – Hangars, Command Posts, Major Commands, B-36, B-47, and B-52, Sixteen Air Force Bases from Barksdale to Whiteman

This is a fascinating survey and detailed history of Strategic Air Command (SAC) bomber mission properties addressing the history of flightline real property supporting these missions from 1947 to 1991, with an emphasis on buildings and structures of the 1947 to 1963 period. During the more than half-century that unfolded between the closing months of World War II and winding down of the Cold War in 1989-1991, the U.S. War Department evolved into the Department of Defense as it is now understood, with its primary supporting arms of the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force, and its reserve forces of the Army, Air Force, and Air National Guards. American military infrastructure is predominantly a phenomenon of the 1939-to-present period, thus precisely paralleling the modern movement in Western European and U.S. architecture and engineering. The years bracketed by 1945 and 1991 also mirror a particular world condition with regards to the development of nuclear weapons. During these decades knowledge within the scientific community emerged exponentially, yet was closely held by the two competing super powers of the U.S. and the Soviet Union into the 1980s. Coupled with strides in physics and mathematics accompanying the shifts from atomic to thermonuclear weaponry, were significant gains in computer capabilities, electronics, and the conquest of near- and far-space-all of which directly supported military activities such as higher order aircraft, radar surveillance, command and control, satellite monitoring, long-range missiles, smart weapons systems, unmanned devices, and general intelligence. The Endless Possibilities of Paper Mache: Imagination vs. Armageddon in the Cold War

The Endless Possibilities of Paper Mache: Imagination vs. Armageddon in the Cold War

Revolution is on the rise. From the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street, people are joining together to protest oppression and greed, and in this renaissance of resistance one of the world’s fastest growing movements is Food Not Bombs. With no leaders or central organization, Food Not Bombs operates on three basic principles: nonviolence, consensus decision-making and free vegetarian food for all. As of 2011, the group counted more than 400 chapters world-wide. How did this movement begin? A fact that many of its members may not know is that FNB’s first meal was intended to be street theater, and the original group consisted mainly of artists, actors, dancers, musicians and clowns. The Endless Possibilities of Paper Maché – Imagination vs. Armageddon in the Cold War, is Jo Swanson’s memoir of life as an actor and activist in Boston during the early 1980’s. It chronicles her experiences as a founding member of Food Not Bombs, director of Performers and Artists for Nuclear Disarmament, organizer with the Nuclear Free Cambridge Campaign, poet with the Underground Surrealists, puppeteer with the Northeast Kingdom Puppet Theater and inmate at Rockingham County Jail. Believing that ‘the personal is political,’ Swanson also pursues inner salvation through avant-garde theater workshops, poetry and dreams. As the decade unfolds and the cold war escalates, she must face the age-old dilemma of pursuing her unlikely ideals or ‘growing up and getting with the program.’Recounted with humor and frequent stabs at the powers that be, The Endless Possibilities of Paper Maché is a fond memory of idealism, camaraderie and creativity in the face of imminent annihilation. Its message is for young people starting out in their efforts to save the world and for the old ones who never gave up. Half the proceeds from this book will be donated to Food Not Bombs.

Waking Up Too Hot Or Too Cold? Try These Easy Fixes (VIDEO)

There are few things better than crawling into a cozy, warm bed on a cool evening and drifting off into a peaceful sleep. Until, that is, you wake up in the middle of the night too hot or too cold to fall back asleep. You might not know the exact cause of your sudden sweat or shivers, but one thing’s clear: You want it to stop.

Dr. Michael Grandner may have advice that can help. He’s a member of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the University of Pennsylvania and is Board-certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine. As he explains to the web series #OWNSHOW, your body temperature is very closely related to how well you sleep, and it fluctuates often during the night.

“In the beginning of the night, you might feel like you’re at the right temperature, but then your body temperature will drop during the night, then it will hit its minimum late at the end of the night, then you start coming up again,” Grandner says. To help your slumber be as comfortable and restful as possible, try these four tips for better sleep.

1. Keep the room between 62 and 72 degrees.

For the majority of people, there’s a clear 10-degree range that represents the sweet spot for deep, restful sleep. “Most people sleep most comfortably at around 62 to 72 degrees,” Grandner says. “Much hotter or colder than that can end up disrupting sleep.”

2. Dress in layers.

“How your body temperature is interacting with the room temperature and how that’s interacting with the blankets can end up leaving you uncomfortable,” Grandner says. “That’s why it’s good to have layers that you can take on or take off if you’re sensitive to temperature.”

3. Be aware of the spicy-food effect.

“A lot of people don’t realize this, but sometimes very spicy food — especially if you eat it close to dinnertime — can raise body temperature, which might make it more difficult to sleep,” Grandner explains.

4. Take a long, hot bath before bed.

“There’s some data showing that a really long, hot bath right before going to bed might temporarily raise your body temperature, but as soon as you get out of the bath, it will plummet,” Grandner says. “[This] might make it much easier to fall asleep, as your body temperature’s dropping.”

Still waking in the middle of the night? This counterintuitive strategy may be the key to falling back asleep.

Ben Affleck Jokes ‘Gone Girl’ Full-Frontal Happened On Cold Set

When accepting an award for your latest film, what better way to use the opportunity than to bring up your now-legendary full-frontal scene?

Ron Howard presented the top prize at the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday night, honoring David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.” Ben Affleck accepted the award on behalf of Fincher and the producers and used his moment on stage to comment on his infamous shower scene from the film. Affleck sarcastically thanked Fincher for keeping the set cool during the sequence: “If you’re going to have one chance for America to see your junk, you want it to be cold.”

The actor used the rest of his speech to poke fun at Fincher, saying the director couldn’t be there to accept the award because he was still busy shooting the film. “Just one or two more takes, we’re gonna have it,” Affleck said, mocking Fincher’s reputation of demanding multiple takes. Fincher may have betrayed Affleck’s trust with the temperature conditions on set, but the actor is still hoping 3-D will make up for it.

The Making of the Cold War Enemy: Culture and Politics in the Military-Intellectual Complex

The Making of the Cold War Enemy: Culture and Politics in the Military-Intellectual Complex

At the height of the Cold War, the U.S. government enlisted the aid of a select group of psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists to blueprint enemy behavior. Not only did these academics bring sophisticated concepts to what became a project of demonizing communist societies, but they influenced decision-making in the map rooms, prison camps, and battlefields of the Korean War and in Vietnam. With verve and insight, Ron Robin tells the intriguing story of the rise of behavioral scientists in government and how their potentially dangerous, “American” assumptions about human behavior would shape U.S. views of domestic disturbances and insurgencies in Third World countries for decades to come. Based at government-funded think tanks, the experts devised provocative solutions for key Cold War dilemmas, including psychological warfare projects, negotiation strategies during the Korean armistice, and morale studies in the Vietnam era. Robin examines factors that shaped the scientists’ thinking and explores their psycho-cultural and rational choice explanations for enemy behavior. He reveals how the academics’ intolerance for complexity ultimately reduced the nation’s adversaries to borderline psychotics, ignored revolutionary social shifts in post-World War II Asia, and promoted the notion of a maniacal threat facing the United States. Putting the issue of scientific validity aside, Robin presents the first extensive analysis of the intellectual underpinnings of Cold War behavioral sciences in a book that will be indispensable reading for anyone interested in the era and its legacy.

‘SNL’ Obama Resorts To Kissing Justin Bieber To Boost Health Care Sign-Ups In Cold Open

Well, you can’t get much more “buzzy” than booking the President of the United States on “Between Two Ferns,” so how else can President Obama spread the word about his health care plan?

“Saturday Night Live” explored his options in this weekend’s cold open sketch, which featured Noel Wells as an obnoxious social media expert with even more “totes viral” ideas on how get more people to sign up for Obamacare by the end of March.

When a photo op with Pharrell’s hat, Kim Kardashian and even The Pope can’t do the trick, they’re forced to bring out the big guns: a kiss with Justin Bieber.

Check out Obama (Jay Pharoah’s) hilariously passionate kiss with the Biebz (Kate McKinnon) in the GIF below, and check back for a video clip when available.

Soviet Baby Boomers: An Oral History of Russia’s Cold War Generation

Soviet Baby Boomers: An Oral History of Russia’s Cold War Generation

Donald Raleigh’s Soviet Baby Boomers traces the collapse of the Soviet Union and the transformation of Russia into a modern, highly literate, urban society through the fascinating life stories of the country’s first post-World War II, Cold War generation. For this book, Raleigh has interviewed sixty 1967 graduates of two “magnet” secondary schools that offered intensive instruction in English, one in Moscow and one in provincial Saratov. Part of the generation that began school the year the country launched Sputnik into space, they grew up during the Cold War, but in a Soviet Union increasingly distanced from the excesses of Stalinism. In this post-Stalin era, the Soviet leadership dismantled the Gulag, ruled without terror, promoted consumerism, and began to open itself to an outside world still fearful of Communism. Raleigh is one of the first scholars of post-1945 Soviet history to draw extensively on oral history, a particularly useful approach in studying a country where the boundaries between public and private life remained porous and the state sought to peer into every corner of people’s lives. During and after the dissolution of the USSR, Russian citizens began openly talking about their past, trying to make sense of it, and Raleigh has made the most of this new forthrightness. He has created an extraordinarily rich composite narrative and embedded it in larger historical narratives of Cold War, de-Stalinization, “overtaking” America, opening up to the outside world, economic stagnation, dissent, emigration, the transition to a market economy, the transformation of class, ethnic, and gender relations, and globalization. Including rare photographs of daily life in Cold War Russia, Soviet Baby Boomers offers an intimate portrait of a generation that has remained largely faceless until now.
