Hong Kong Designers Channel Color, Art into London Collections

FASHION EXCHANGE: Hong Kong fashion has landed in London with local brands Loom Loop, House of V, Yeung Chin and Doris Kath presenting their fall collections as London Fashion Week kicked off.
The initiative, supported by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, spotlighted a diversity of styles and inspirations from the four brands.
Loom Loop’s designer Polly Ho served up a colorful mix of prints and fabrics to represent Hong Kong’s fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Dubbed “Concrete Jungle,” the collection balanced solid colors with prints featuring floral and animal motifs for kimono dresses and other ensembles.
The standout look was a print-on-print number: Ho layered a long shirt with ruffles and dolman sleeves with a vest, leggings and gloves, in a color palette that ranged from forest green to bright red.
House of V channeled a spare, Scandinavian-style aesthetic, with designer Vickie Au drawing inspiration from Damien Hirst’s famous series of spot paintings. She placed colorful, round buttons on the cuffs of shirts and minimal outerwear, adding dimension to the clean silhouettes.
Yeung Chin went in a different direction from his fellow designers, opting for a darker palette. Themed “Utopia,” the lineup revisited military inspiration with boyish, asymmetric and oversized silhouettes.

N.Hoolywood’s Creative Casting Sets Tone for Collections

TOKYO — Over the past several seasons, N.Hoolywood has become a staple on the New York Fashion Week: Men’s calendar, and it’s not only for its stylish collection. The brand is well-known for street-casting the models who walk in the show, and often the models draw nearly as much buzz as the clothes themselves.
“After the show ends, there are people from casting companies and modeling agencies waiting outside every time,” said N.Hoolywood’s designer Daisuke Obana. “Some models have even hit it big after walking in our show.”
Obana started his brand almost by accident. He had been working as a buyer for a popular vintage clothing store in Tokyo, making up to 10 buying trips to different parts of the U.S. every year. But after working in the vintage industry for about a decade, he noticed that the best items were getting harder and harder to find, and he started to question whether there was a future for him in his vocation.
“At that time there were a lot of things that were in terrible condition but had a good aura, or things that didn’t hold any value to most people but were still cool,” he said. “So I started to select and

DVF to Stop Using Fur in All Upcoming Collections

Diane von Furstenberg has decided to cease production and use of fur in all upcoming collections.
Concerned about the ethical and environmental impact of using farmed fur in fashion collections, and responding to the consumer’s desire for ethical fashion, DVF has partnered with the Humane Society of the United States and PETA to end the exploitation of animal fur in fashion
“It’s time for us to make this change and accept responsibility to ensure that we don’t promote killing animals for the sake of fashion,” said Sandra Campos, chief executive officer of DVF. “We are committed to supporting the shift to a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry by providing the consumer with innovative and sophisticated alternatives. Beginning with 2019, DVF will not incorporate the use of exotic skins, mohair, angora or fur.”
Von Furstenberg added, “I am so excited that technology has provided us a way to feel as glamorous with faux fur.”
Less than 15 percent of DVF’s fall collections since fall 2015 have included fur, angora and skin. DVF will continue to use ethically sourced shearling given the byproduct nature of this material.
DVF is working with the Council of Fashion Designers of America on a sustainability roadmap, and also focusing on innovative

Fila and Bandier Team up for Three Capsule Collections

THREE FOR THE ROAD: Fila is building on its ties to Bandier by developing three exclusive collections this fall.
The first capsule collection will debut in Bandier stores and on its site Thursday. Shoppers in the Bandier store at 108 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan will find the offerings hard to miss. Aside from the window displays, there will also be in-store displays and consumer activations. There will also be paid social media efforts, out-of-home advertising and a wheat pasting campaign.
The Fila collaboration will include pricier items than its standard athletic offerings such as a $ 625 suede jacket, while a flared skort is $ 108. The eight-piece range is designed in Fila’s signature red, white and navy color palette — with the addition of a light-blue hue — and classic pinstripes adorn fabrics like terry and suede.
A Fila spokeswoman said the Bandier collaboration “is a natural extension of the brand’s history as we continue to push forward as a fashion brand with a sports DNA. We continue to find like-minded partners like Bandier, whose DNA is in athletic lifestyle category.”

CFDA and NYCEDC Highlight Graduate Fashion Collections

The CFDA and New York City Economic Development Corp. earlier this week held the Fashion Future Graduate Showcase, a three-day showcase of design talent from some of the top fashion schools in the U.S. at Industria Studios. Collections by 53 graduates from schools including Academy of Art University, California College of the Arts, FIT, Kent State University, Parsons, Pratt, Rhode Island School of Design and SCAD were exhibited July 9 and 10, with the top four collections presented on July 11. The students selected for Wednesday’s presentation included Zhouyi Li of the Academy of Art University, Taliah Leslie of Pratt, and Britt Luttio and Peng Ye of Parsons.
All four students took the conceptual route, with Li working her garments with three-dimensional geometric shapes inspired by Richard Serra. Luttio worked with the concept of identity. “Within our persona we have multiple identities,” she said. “How I am in this space is not how I’m going to be with my lover or with my mom.” Her collection featured transformative pieces with a definitive Nineties attitude, that was influenced by things from her childhood — Victoria’s Secret and Betsey Johnson. Virgil Abloh, Kim Jones Design Nike World Cup Collections

Virgil Abloh and Kim Jones both have relationships with soccer — or football.
Jones has said he really doesn’t like football but appreciates the aesthetics. For his World Cup collection for Nike, he wanted to rework the typical uniform and infuse London punk style of the Seventies and Eighties into the collection.
Titled “Football Reimagined,” the assortment includes training shorts, hoodies, jackets and a pair of the Nike x Kim Jones Air Max 360 High.

“That whole punk era was all about proportions that gave power to the wearer. I was inspired by the idea of DIY of the time — cutting up and putting things back together — to create something new,” Jones said.
Abloh recalls high school soccer matches and for his collection, titled “Football, Mon Amour,” he mixed lifestyle with sport typography and designed the Nike x Off-White Zoom Fly Mercurial Flyknit.
“The great thing about the vocabulary and history of football is that aesthetically it has its own look,” Abloh said. “I was always inspired by the way European teams have a sponsor printed over the chest. When I was working on this collection, I wanted to celebrate the different variants of typography.”

Gosha Rubchinskiy to Halt Seasonal Collections

CHANGE AGENT: Gosha Rubchinskiy has a new mystery project up his sleeve. The Russian designer on Wednesday posted a message on his Instagram account announcing plans to “stop Gosha Rubchinskiy brand as you’ve known it.”
“We will have no more seasonal collections. Instead, something new is coming,” he said.

The designer, who is closely linked to the skateboarding scene, was not available for comment.
At his fall 2018 show last January in Yekaterinburg, Russia, Rubchinskiy hinted at changes ahead and a special collaboration with Adidas to be shown in Moscow prior to Europe’s biggest soccer tournament, the FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in Russia from June 14 to July 15.
“We won’t have a show before the World Cup, and the show in terms of presenting the collection will be happening after the World Cup, but [I have] no idea where. About other collections, I cannot say anything as it is early and we need to decide,” he said at the time.
Rubchinskiy, who is also a photographer and filmmaker, introduced his label in 2008 and presented his first three shows in Moscow. He catapulted on to the men’s wear scene with his edgy shows in Paris, where he showed for four seasons,

Central Saint Martins’ MA Students Present Graduate Collections at London Fashion Week

Student graduate shows can be hit or miss but the 19 MA students from Central Saint Martins presented an exciting mix that ran the sartorial gamut from extreme silhouettes and innovative textiles to sleek tailoring in more traditional fabrications.
Among the highlights: Liam Johnson, whose sculptural silhouettes opened the show; Elise Perrotta’s all cream collection featuring wardrobe staples in textural knits, and women’s wear designer Edwin Mohney, who closed the show with a provocative collection that included conceptual pieces made using inflatables wrapped in packing tape.
As in past seasons, craftsmanship in the men’s wear stood out. Particularly noteworthy was Olaf Tavares Vieira, whose draped men’s wear collection was awarded the L’Oreal Professional Creative Award. Inspired by utilitarianism and the stomach as the center of the body, his lineup included fluid ankle-grazing coats, along with sweaters with cutouts in the back and slouchy trousers enveloping the torso that had a monkish appeal.
“I like clothes that are close on the neck and belly and on the ankle,” Vieira explained. “It gives me a kind of strength, even if the clothes are soft.”

Martin Grant Leaps Into Men’s Wear Amid Shift in Collections Calendar

PARIS — Martin Grant, whose razor-sharp tailoring has earned him fans including Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Connelly, is launching a capsule collection for men as part of a broader plan to switch the focus away from his main women’s collection and toward the pre-collection seasons.
Grant is set to unveil the men’s line, featuring between 15 and 20 designs, during presentations at his Paris showroom between Jan. 17 and 24.
Starting in July, the Australian designer, whose last catwalk show was held in October 2015, will resume runway presentations during Paris Couture Week showcasing his men’s designs alongside his women’s pre-fall collections and a smattering of couture.
He will present a few additions to the pre-collection to coincide with the main women’s ready-to-wear shows in March and October, but will no longer produce separate collections. Grant said the decision made sense, as pre-collections now account for 80 percent of his business.
“Logistically it’s much better for us, because it’s what the buyers want anyhow,” he told WWD during an exclusive preview of the men’s collection. “They’re putting all of their budget into the pre-collections, because they need the time to sell. London College of Fashion Spotlights MA Men’s Wear Collections

FRESH TALENT: London College of Fashion’s graduating MA men’s wear students showcased their collections on Friday with a runway show ahead of London Fashion Week Men’s.
Ten students from the fashion design technology men’s wear course presented their ranges at St John’s Smith Square in Westminster, in the show styled by Adele Cany. The strongest lineups came from Hanni Yang, Ying Yi Lu, Hengmin Lu, Sohyeon Park and Xu Bo.
Yang, who has worked with Teatum Jones and Céline, explored pattern-cutting and worked scarves onto the garments. She sent out a range of tailored-yet-relaxed looks and draped burgundy and cream silk scarves over a white men’s wear shirt and burgundy trousers.
Ying Yi Lu looked to young boys of the Victorian era and focused on tailoring, as in a cropped blue pinstripe suit. Lu topped off the looks with sailor style hats done in collaboration with Atelier Millinery.
Hengmin Lu — who has worked with Ports 1961 — was inspired by the architecture of the Chairman Mao era. Lu explored functionality and pattern cutting as seen on a long brown coat, worn over a white shirt with a mandarin collar and white knee-length shorts. Maison Alaïa to Continue With Collections, Exhibitions

SECOND LIFE: An Azzedine Alaïa retrospective slated to open at London’s Design Museum in May figures among the ongoing homages to the recently departed couturier. But for anyone pondering the fate of the house, the show will go on.
Its next ready-to-wear and accessories collections will be presented in January and March, according to a statement released by Maison Alaïa on Monday. However, no information was provided on who will design them.
Caroline Fabre Bazin is Maison Alaïa’s studio director.
The house and its know-how is also set to live on through a series of exhibitions and events, working with various collaborators from the Alaïa “family” and kicking off with an exhibition timed for Paris couture week in January curated by Olivier Saillard, who was behind a major Alaïa retrospective that marked the reopening of Paris’ Musée Galliera in 2013. The new exhibition will be held at the house’s headquarters in the Marais district, at the Galerie Alaïa, on Rue de la Verrerie.

Woolmark and Facetasm Team for Capsule Collections

A WOOL PAIR: Facetasm and the Woolmark Company are teaming for two capsule collections, kicking off a relationship between the Japanese brand and textile company intended to last beyond the collaboration and foster ties between the Australian wool industry and Japan’s fashion sector.
Facetasm designer and founder Hiromichi Ochiai, who visited Australia to learn about merino wool production, will become the first “global wool ambassador from Japan,” said Woolmark managing director Stuart McCullough in a statement. McCullough noted that the country represents an important market in terms of creativity and quality, and that the partnership was meant to expand merino wool “beyond traditional tailoring.”
“I believe merino wool is an essential ingredient for the brand to move onto the next step in its creation,” said Ochiai, who spent time with sheep farmers on his visit. The first capsule collection will be shown in January in Paris.

Onward Luxury Group To Produce OAMC Collections

MILAN – Onward Luxury Group has signed an agreement with OAMC to produce the men’s fashion label’s collections.
Reached by phone on Thursday, OLG president Franco Pené said that the collaboration with the buzzy brand will start with the fall 2018 collection, which OAMC creative directors Luke and Lucie Meier will unveil with a runway show at Paris Fashion Week.
Last April, the designers were named creative directors of Jil Sander, which is owned by OLG parent company Onward Holdings, following the exit of former creative director Rodolfo Paglialunga, who joined the brand in 2014.
Although Pené confirmed the news, an OAMC spokesperson said “nothing is confirmed for the time being.”
OLG produces the collections of a range of international labels. In particular, the company manufactures the ready-to-wear lineups of Rochas, Antonio Berardi and Mulberry, as well the footwear lines of Rochas, Mulberry, Proenza Schouler and See by Chloé.
In addition, along with Jil Sander, Onward Holdings controls several fashion labels, including Joseph, J. Press and leather goods maker Moreau Paris. It also holds a stake in luxury footwear label Charlotte Olympia.

Collections: Fashion Met Emotion at the Most Theatrical Antonio Marras Show

“It was the longest week of my life,” Antonio Marras says, referring to the days before his runway show in September during Milan Fashion Week — a complex production that yielded a powerful emotional charge. As Marras’ wife Patrizia Sardo ironically put it, welcoming WWD at the show: “We always like simple things!”
The complexity stemmed from the fact that the event took place inside Milan’s Teatro Lirico, which is being gutted and restored after being closed for 25 years.
“As soon as I got into the theater, it was love at the first sight. It left me breathless,” says Marras, who was originally asked by the [artistic and cultural] Gianfranco Dioguardi Fondazione to present a project to decorate the façade. Shortly after, the designer was asked if it would be possible for him to hold the show at the theater. “I said ‘Everything is possible.’ So we started.”

Retailers Divided Over Milan’s Shorter Length, but Praise Collections

MILAN — Retailers were divided about the shorter fashion week in Milan, but they agreed that creativity was strong and that designers generally delivered.
Bruce Pask, men’s fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman, said “despite the fact there are fewer shows here, it is still a schedule packed with appointments, showroom walk-throughs and certainly runway shows. Milan Fashion Week is incredibly important and fruitful for us at Goodman’s, always.”
Retro sports looks, including track suits; oversized silhouettes and baggy pants; layering; strong outerwear; a fresh summer color palette that included shades of pale pink; fluid shapes and fabrics, and streetwear references were some of the main trends praised by retailers.
Maud Tarena, director of men’s fashion at Le Bon Marché, said brands are “mixing up lighter and warmer outerwear together” in a seasonless way. “Thom Browne, for example, offered down jackets and swimwear in the same show [Moncler Gamme Bleu]. Even the weight of fabrics is very versatile,” said Tarena, whose favorite show was Prada. It was “energetic and exciting,” she said. Tarena, however, was frustrated by the limited number of shows in Milan and said there were “no strong discoveries, no surprises.” The store’s budget remained stable compared to last year, she said.

G-III Licenses PVH for DKNY Men’s Wear Collections in the U.S. and Canada

G-III Apparel Group, Ltd. has entered into a multiyear license agreement with PVH Corp., under which PVH will design and distribute men’s wear for the DKNY brand in the U.S. and Canada. The license agreement includes DKNY Sport for Men, a new category for the brand; men’s sportswear; dress shirts; neckwear, and jeans.
The first collections will launch in spring 2018 and will be sold in department stores. Unlike the women’s DKNY collection, the men’s wear will not be exclusive to Macy’s.
G-III acquired Donna Karan International, parent company of DKNY, from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton in December 2016.
The last time there was a DKNY Men’s collection in the market was for fall 2015. During the three seasons that DKNY was designed by Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne (spring 2016, fall 2016 and spring 2017), the designers focused on women’s apparel.

Moschino to Show Men’s Spring, Women’s Resort Collections in Los Angeles

MILAN – Moschino said on Wednesday that it will present its spring 2018 men’s collection in Los Angeles. During the runway show, which will take place on June 8 at Hollywood’s Milk Studios, Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott will also unveil the brand’s women’s resort 2018 collection.
Exclaimed Scott, about his decision to return to show in California: “As Los Angeles is where I live, to quote Dorothy: ‘There is no place like home!’”
Last June, the brand had already combined its men’s spring collection with the women’s resort range in a runway show as part of the Made LA lineup, which included a variety of runways shows, parties and events held at downtown Los Angeles’ L.A. Live event space.
Moschino men’s fall 2017 collection, along with the women’s pre-fall 2017 line, was unveiled at a show in Milan last January.
In April, Moschino and Scott hosted an event at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in collaboration with mobile game Candy Crush and streaming video platform Tidal, which live-streamed musical performances from the party, including appearances from Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty.

DXL Adds Mo Vaughn’s MVP Collections Big and Tall Line

Mo Vaughn’s MVP Collection has snagged its first wholesale customer, and it’s the big and tall industry’s biggest player.
The men’s lifestyle brand created by Major League Baseball’s three-time All Star and Most Valuable Player was picked up by DXL Group, which is testing the collection in a limited number of doors, according to David Levin, DXL’s chief executive officer.
“We see a movement back into the urban lifestyle for some of our stores,” Levin said. “The lifestyle that the Mo Vaughn collection represents has been a void in our assortments for the last several years.”
Levin said early results for the line, which is also available online, are encouraging and he hopes that a new marketing campaign that was built by the two companies around the launch of the label’s spring collection, will further boost sales.
“We are co-branding an online sweepstakes with MVP where users enter to win a variety of prizes,” Levin said. “The objective is to drive awareness to the new MVP Collections at DXL in several key markets.”
The collection is carried at several DXL stores in the New York area as well as units in Chicago; Atlanta; San Jose, Calif.; Las Vegas; Dedham, Mass.; Dallas, and Towson, Mary.

Roc-A-Fella Records Cofounder Kareem ‘Biggs’ Burke to Launch 14 Capsule Collections Nationwide

Kareem “Biggs” Burke is executive producing a new type of project.
The cofounder of Roc-A-Fella records is overseeing the simultaneous drop of 14 Roc96 collections at 14 specialty stores throughout the U.S. starting in December. Each collection is inspired by a different song from “Reasonable Doubt,” Jay Z’s debut album that turned 20 this year.
“I was trying to do one drop a month and obviously there are 14 songs and there aren’t 14 months in a year, so we decided to consolidate it,” said Burke, who tasked his design team with thoroughly listening to the album before creating the collection. The line, which retails from $ 25 to $ 145, features T-shirts, hoodies, hats, beanies and reprinted “Reasonable Doubt” cassettes. The assortment has graphics and messaging that riff off of lyrics from the classic album.

VINTAGE GOLDMINE: Nasty Gal is getting back to its vintage roots. On Saturday, the retailer will drop the first of two curated capsule collections of designer vintage — referred to as its Vintage Goldmine series — at NastyGal.com.
Though Nasty Gal always offers a selection of designer vintage on its site and in stores, these annual capsule collections, which began in 2013, include one-off and limited-edition items. “The Vintage Goldmine capsule is the best of the best stuff: those really limited-edition, hard-to-find pieces that we absolutely cherish,” said Juliana McWilliams, the retailer’s vintage buyer. This year’s edition will include vintage clothing and accessories from Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, Chanel, Celine and more.

Tom Ford to Stage Show During London Collections: Men

FORD FORGES AHEAD: Tom Ford will unveil his fall 2016 men’s collection at London Collections: Men in January for the first time in a show format.
Ford, who usually holds appointments in his studio for press and buyers to view his men’s collections, has a provisional slot on the calendar for Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m., and the British Fashion Council is set to confirm the final schedule on Dec. 7.
According to a Ford spokeswoman, a decision on how the collection will be presented has not been made at this time.
Ford, who did not stage a runway show or presentation for his women’s spring 2016 collection, took it to the small screen last month with a  video shot by Nick Knight that featured Lady Gaga.
Ford is working on his second film, “Nocturnal Animals,” an adaptation of the 1993 novel “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is due for release next year.

The invitation read “Don quixotic black tie,” and whether that was a typo or an intentional blending of noun and adjective, the women who arrived at The Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Ball on Thursday were decked out in flamenco ruffles and matador-inspired outfits. The theme, “A Dance at the Spanish Court,” took inspiration from the museum’s special exhibition Coypel’s Don Quixote Tapestries: Illustrating a Spanish Novel in Eighteenth-Century France. Many were dressed by Lanvin, the evening’s sponsor, including chairmen Lydia Fenet Delaney, Elizabeth Kurpis, and Amory McAndrew. “I always love the Frick [gala], seeing what everyone’s wearing. People really dress for the theme, unlike many other parties,” Delaney said. “The setting lends itself to being really dramatically dressed,” McAndrew piped in. Adding to the drama—or the Instagram fodder at least—were customized fans emblazoned with “Lanvin [hearts] the Frick” in gold cursive.
