Comedian Muses on Canada’s ‘Hoser’ Style

TORONTO — Happy Canada Day, eh!
Come July 1, every Canadian with a hoser in his or her heart — and there are millions of them — will take to their cottages, stretch out on those sun-warmed decks, beer in hand, and let those words trip off their lips in celebration of the Great White North’s 150th anniversary.
Indeed, for actress Ann Pornel, one of the new generation of actors performing in The Second City in Toronto, Canada’s milestone birthday offers the perfect opportunity to revisit the very essence of that “bad in plaid” persona made so famous in the Seventies and Eighties by SCTV’s hapless hosers, Bob and Doug McKenzie, portrayed by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. (Details about Pornel’s milestone performance for the company will be released in July.)
“I was five years old when I immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, so plaid flannel shirts and bed linen did not fill my home or define me as a human being. I never wore denim on denim. And my go-to stores were never Hudson’s Bay or Roots — although the stuff they sell is top drawer. But when you look past all those ‘eh’s’ and brewskis [slang for beers], there’s definitely more to

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy Surprises Mother At The Grocery Store By Paying Her Bill

Here’s a touching story to brighten up your Monday morning.

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy paid it forward, literally, over the weekend when he decided to foot the bill for a woman named Robin McFadden at the grocery store.

McFadden told Fox 5 she decided to go “couponing” at the store with her three sons after one of them finished a basketball game.

“I was at the register and between me worrying about my items and the kids fussing, I didn’t even know that Jeff Foxworthy was standing behind me,” she said.

McFadden said that she overheard a man ask the cashier how much cash she needed to cover the bill, which was a total of about $ 25. When she turned around, she realized it was Foxworthy.

“He laughed, walked around me, put his card in the machine and said ‘watch this.’  I told him that he was going to make me cry, gave him a hug, thanked him and took the photo!”

McFadden shared the photo of herself with the comedian on Facebook, writing, “The kids were restless and look who was behind me. He paid for my order when I wasn’t looking! I love Jeff Foxworthy!”

Larry David Was Pretty, Pretty Good As Bernie Sanders, But This Comedian Is Even Better

The Internet agreed that “Seinfeld” co-creator and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Larry David did a pretty, pretty good impression of Democratic presidential candidate (and fellow Brooklyn native) Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on “Saturday Night Live.” Even Sanders himself loved it, joking that he’ll invite David to his campaign rallies because “he does better than I do.”

But here’s one that rivals David’s portrayal, from comedian James Adomian, who performed his own Sanders impression last week at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York.

Watch Adomian as Sanders in the clip above, participating in a “debate” with Donald Trump, played by comedian Anthony Atamanuik.

And here’s David again, in case you missed it.

Comedian Who Lied About Surviving 9/11 Opens Up For The First Time

Comedian Steve Rannazzisi, in his first public comments since he was exposed for lying he was in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks, explained how he believed his deception protected him from “cruel” fellow comedians and defined his career.

Rannazzisi, star of “The League,” apologized Tuesday during a 40-minute interview on Howard Stern’s radio show and addressed last months’ New York Times story that revealed he wasn’t working in the Merrill Lynch office on the 54th floor of the World Trade Center south tower when the north tower was hit. Rannazzisi recounted the fake experience to interviewers for years and claimed the ordeal motivated him to follow his dreams of being an entertainer.

“Do you think of yourself as psychologically disturbed? How do you view yourself after doing this thing?” Stern asked.

“Psychologically disturbed — I don’t know if that’s the way to put it,” Rannazzisi said. “I do see someone and am starting to figure out more about myself: codependency and wanting people to like me and to make people happy.”

The “why” is still unclear, he said.

“It wasn’t calculated at all,” he said. “It was as simple as sitting at the Comedy Store and everyone being like, ‘Hey, you’re from New York?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Were you just there? You were around?’ ‘Yeah, I was downtown.’ ‘You worked there?’ ‘Yeah, I did.’”

Within seconds, Rannazzisi said he felt he couldn’t set the record straight.

“You have like 15 seconds, I think, to kind of go, ‘Wait, hold on. Stop. I’m sorry. That’s not true.'” he said. “If you pass that 15 seconds … now, it becomes a thing where you’re like, ‘Now, I have to be the guy that’s very strange and weird and just said I lied about 9/11.’”

Once the fake story gained traction, Rannazzisi said the resulting sympathy gave him security in the brutal comedy community.

“I think it might have been like, comedians are cruel people, especially in the beginning,” he said. “And I kind of was like, well maybe people will not be as mean to me or not make as many jokes about me because they think that this is what I went through.”

When the Times confronted him last month with conflicting versions of his 9/11 story, Rannazzisi responded with a statement confirming that he had lied. The confession may be damning to his career, but he said he feels relief and is glad he can finally apologize.

“I know what I did was terrible, and I know that I hurt a lot of people — people that lost people, people that helped people survive — and those people, those are the people that I truly am sorry,” he said. “That’s why I wanted to come on here.”

Comedian Tracy Morgan Weds 14 Months After Surviving Car Wreck

Tracy Morgan, a star of comedy series “30 Rock” and cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” married his long-time fiancee on Sunday, 14 months after suffering life-threatening injuries in a deadly car wreck, People magazine reported on its web site.

Morgan, 46, sustained a brain injury and broken bones when a Walmart tractor-trailer hit his limousine on the New Jersey Turnpike as he returned from a gig in Atlantic City in June last year.

The comedian’s wedding to Megan Wollover on Sunday night was attended by close friends and family, the couple’s 2-year-old daughter, Maven.

“After almost losing Tracy last year, I am so grateful to finally be married to the love of my life,” Wollover told People.

“We have been through so much and our love is stronger for it,” Wollover was quoted as saying.

The magazine reported that Morgan’s representatives also confirmed the marriage.

Morgan has not performed since the crash, in which a close friend died, but will host an episode of sketch show “Saturday Night Live” on Oct. 17, NBC said earlier this month. He was once a regular cast member of the long-running show.

In a television interview two months ago, Morgan wad seen wiping away tears and holding a black cane, saying he needed to heal.

His friend, comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair was killed and nine other people were injured in the wreck.

The National Transportation Safety Board held a speeding Wal-Mart truck driver who had been awake for 28 hours responsible for the accident.

Comedian Jim Breuer’s Father’s Day Message of Hope and Healing

“If we don’t find the funny, there’s not too many other ways of healing.”

— Jim Breuer

Jim Breuer knows funny. The comedian who was named by Comedy Central as one of the greatest standup comedians of all time has been entertaining us since his days on “Saturday Night Live” to his recent Epix special, “Jim Breuer: Comedy Frenzy.” But it was his movie “More Than Me,” a documentary of Breuer’s experience taking his elderly and sick father on his comedy tour, which was perhaps one of the pinnacles of his career.

At the end of the movie, Breuer tearfully contemplates losing his father. Breuer’s father died of cancer in August 2014, making this Breuer’s first Father’s Day without his father. And Breuer is sharing a simple but powerful message that he learned from, and with, his dad:

You don’t have to hide from life’s uncomfortable truths — sickness, death, fear — you can look them in the eye, laugh and move on.

Breuer described how his relationship with his dad changed over time. “Well, with my dad, he was a solid-rock man. For me, fearless. I’m going to assume that came from his World War II days. And really quiet. We never had big talks. They were always short conversations,” he explained. “But every pivotal move in my life, he gave the perfect man, fatherly advice. Leaving school, chasing my career, to getting married — everything. One little line here, one little line there. He was so big and powerful.”

But as time went on, Breuer’s dad became older and struggled with his health. The comedian was taken aback as his father appeared to be aware of his own waning health. “So when he started getting old, I remember being in this kitchen, and he looked a little off, and I’m like, ‘What’s the matter, Dad?’ And he goes, ‘I think I’m coming into my last days,'” he recalled. “So, why would you say that? ‘Do you feel like you’re having a heart attack or something?’ [He said] ‘No. I’m just coming into the end of my days.'”

This was a powerful lesson for Breuer. His dad was calmly and assertively facing sickness and death. And this may be the healthiest choice. Studies suggest that far from improving well-being, suppressing or avoiding one’s experience can actually worsen mental and physical health.

And it meant that Breuer himself had to face that reality. “It was so profound. He just knew. ‘I want you to know, I’m out of here soon,'” he said. “When I heard my dad say that, he was the one thing where I was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to live forever.’ Then I went, ‘Oh, my G-d, he’s leaving.’ And I didn’t know when or what.”

It was then Breuer started to see a different side of his father. Breuer describes: “[F]or the first time, I saw him vulnerable. Never saw him vulnerable,” he explained. “And I’d get him in the shower and get over that whole ‘I’ve got to get over looking at my father naked, and clean his rear end and scrub him.’ I know he’s embarrassed. He’s not going to say he’s embarrassed. But I can tell by his face he’s embarrassed. He’d be completely humiliated.”

So Breuer took the lesson from his dad and explored how to make the best of a terrible situation. The comic started by remembering how what his dad had done for him. “And then as he started deteriorating, I just remembered all the little things he’d do for me to keep me going. And they were so little. But they were huge,” he recalled. “And so when he started going down, it’s those moments when you look at what’s really important. I’m going to start lifting him up.”

And so Breuer turned to what he knew best — humor. This was a wise choice; not only because of his chosen profession, but also because of the evidence that humor can improve many aspects of functioning from mood, to immune functioning to learning.

“[W]e’re going to laugh about it. I’m going to drive him nuts. I’m going to do what I do best. I’m going to drive you nuts. … I would laugh so hard, busting his chops,” Breuer said. “And he loved George Carlin. That would be the only thing that would make him belly-laugh. It’s just something you take on. And I did everything in my power, and I think I succeeded to make that the best I could. We laughed. We’d make it a project. We’d laugh about it. It sucked at first. But then I’d overcome it.”

And it was a two-way street. “As much as I’d bust his chops, he’d bust mine in different ways. He knew I’d get mortified when I’d say certain things in public. He got off on that,” Breuer recounted. .”The laughing was always the healer.”

For Breuer, the laughing was not an attempt to avoid the truth, but rather what made it easier to embrace truth. “Sometimes, people don’t want to acknowledge the raw truth. Sometimes the truth is dark and ugly and hurts,” he explained. “And that goes with death and everything else. And sometimes it’s not pretty. Some of it’s just plain evil.”

And there’s one raw truth that Breuer found he was able to accept over time.

“Men like that don’t say ‘I love you so much.’ They say, ‘I did the oil in your car.’ That means, ‘G-d damn. I love you.'”

‘There’s $ 20 on your bed means ‘G-d damn. I love you.’ That’s their way.”

“And that’s up to you to figure out what that means.”

Comedian Grace Helbig Credits All Her Success To These Three Words

Comedian Grace Helbig is a YouTube phenomenon, the star of her own new show on E! and a New York Times bestselling author, but the self-proclaimed “awkward older sister” says she owes all her success to failure.

In a commencement speech she delivered Friday at her alma mater, Ramapo College, Helbig, 29, recalled an epiphany she had while working an unfulfilling office job while dreaming of being a professional comedian.

“Quite honestly I think it is way more terrifying to be boring than to be a failure,” she said. “Failures are what make you interesting, and they’re what give you perspective and they’re what get you millions of views on YouTube.”

That mindset, she told the graduates, comes from a mantra she picked up while doing improv in New York after graduating in 2007: “Follow your fear.”

“When you’re uncomfortable, that’s when things get really interesting,” she said. “The more I kept doing improv and the more I kept following my fear, the more I realized that being uncomfortable is truly being alive,” Helbig added later. “The only thing you can do in this life is pursue your passions, celebrate your bloopers and never stop following your fear.”

That philosphy, she explained, led her to one of her most laughable learning experiences.

“I’ve auditioned for SNL in front of Lorne Michaels wearing a belly chain and doing my best Jersey girl accent. Oh my gawd, can you believe I didn’t get cast?” she said, flipping on the accent. “Oh my gawd.”

Dave Ware’s Jimmy Fallon Lego Mosaic A Hit With Comedian (PHOTO)

In case you missed it yesterday, my #lego mosaic of Jimmy Fallon. pic.twitter.com/8rgXPx56vT

— Dave Ware (@Brickwares) December 15, 2013

“You never really know how people are going to take the Lego art. He seemed like a guy who would be into it,” Ware told The Huffington Post Alberta.

While there has been no official response by Fallon, Ware’s friend tells him he was impressed by the portrait and thought it was unbelievable that a Lego portrait was even possible.

The mosaic is 3D in nature, with the main portion of the bricks a bit higher than the rest.

This isn’t the first time Ware has made a Lego portrait of a popular personality. He’s been working on mosaics for over six years and created portraits of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and the Dalai Lama among others.

An oil and gas software analyst by day, Ware says he’s been a Lego fan “forever,” and is still hoping to hear back from Fallon personally.

Here’s a look at more amazing creations by Dave Ware:
