Ron Diamond’s Animation Show of Shows Coming to Comic-Con, Getting Ready for Nationwide Debut

Toon fans rejoice! The Animation Show of Shows will soon be coming to a theater near you.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter, this animation industry favorite will now transition from being an insider-only exclusive to becoming a program that film fans around the world can participate in and enjoy.

2015-07-02-1435865026-7316782-Diamond2.jpg

For those of you who don’t know: The Animation Show of Shows has long been Ron Diamond‘s baby. For the past 16 years, this veteran animation producer has circled the globe seeking out the very best new animated short films. Which sounds like it might be a fun way for a cinema fan to spend their time, but is actually a quite challenging task.

“Just recently, I sat through a screening of over 200 student films. All because I was looking for those one or two short animated films that I might consider adding to the line-up on my next Animation Show of Shows,” Ron explained during a recent phone interview.

And previously — once Diamond has selected all of that year’s animated gems — he’d then truck this feature-length compilation to animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Blue Sky. All with the hope that — by exposing these creatives to what the next generation of animators was up to — he’d then inspire these folks to explore unexpected ideas.”

2015-07-02-1435865079-1292332-Diamond3.jpg

“And while I don’t mean to brag, I think that I’ve got a pretty good eye for this stuff. 29 of the films that I’ve showcased in previous Animation Show of Shows have gone on to get Academy Award nominations. And 9 of those animated short films then went on to win the Oscar,” Ron continued.

But after 16 years of annually assembling this great collection of animated short films which was then meant to educate and inspire industry insiders, Diamond was looking to broaden his horizons. He wanted the general public to now be able to get in on the fun. Which is why Ron set up a not-for-profit organization that would then make it possible to The Animation Show of Shows to expand its mission.

“After all, it’s one thing to show these new animated short films to industry insiders who then might have some knowledge of who these fledgling filmmakers are, the reputations of their teachers and/or their independent work. And it’s an entirely different thing to show these great new animated short films to an audience that’s going in cold. That has absolutely no context when it comes to who these filmmakers are and where the ideas for each of these new animated shorts may have come from,” Diamond stated.

2015-07-02-1435865118-6502741-Diamond1.jpg

That was what really drove Ron to get a Kickstarter campaign going for the Animation Show of Shows. If he was going to transform this showcase of new animated short films into something that members of the general film-going public could genuinely understand and appreciate … Well, that then meant that Diamond would have to craft profiles of the talented individuals who had created these animated short films. And given that Ron prides himself on always putting together a program that represents what is going on internationally in animation that year, that then meant Diamond was going to need to send film crews around the globe to create these contextual pieces that would profile that year’s top animators.

Thanks to the generous pledges of the people who supported Ron’s vision for a more ambitious, broader reaching Animation Show of Shows, those profiles will now be included in Diamond’s next feature-length compilation of the finest animated shorts from around the world. Not only that, but Ron will be using these funds to expand into the field of restoration. Singling out great animated short films from the past that need to be preserved and shared.

By the way, if you’re headed to San Diego next week for the 2015 edition of Comic-Con and want to get a sense of the sort of show that Ron Diamond plans on presenting very soon at a theater near you, the 16th Annual Animation Show of Shows will be presented in Hall H on Friday, July 10th from 10 – 11:30 a.m. Hopefully — as part of the Q & A session that’s supposed to follow this presentation — Diamond will then discuss his plans for this award-winning series of animated short films.

Teen Cosplayer Sexually Assaulted And Beaten Near Comic-Con, Police Say

A teen cosplayer who had been attending Comic-Con in San Diego was attacked, sexually assaulted and left bloody and unconscious on the side of a road early Sunday, according to reports.

Police said late Tuesday that they had arrested a 29-year-old man at the nearby Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, and charged him with sexual contact with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The suspect has not been identified.

“The victim, a juvenile female, was transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment,” the Port of San Diego Harbor Police said in a statement posted on G33K-HQ. “This investigation is ongoing.”

Earlier in the day, the victim’s parents posted a plea for information that was widely circulated on Facebook and Twitter as well as in fan forums and blogs.

The victim, who had been dressed in a creative take on a Roger Rabbit costume, was out with friends on Saturday night but left them after a disagreement, Raw Story reported.

Messages from family and friends posted on social media indicate the victim is currently in the ICU and may be suffering from bleeding in the brain. However, a more recent post on Facebook says “each day she is getting better.”

The Huffington Post is not linking to these posts so as to avoid revealing the identity of the victim.

It’s not yet clear whether the suspect attended Comic-Con, although the hotel where he was arrested is the event’s official headquarters and as a result is popular among attendees.

The assault has led to renewed calls in the cosplay community for a strict and more formal anti-harassment policy at the annual comic book and movie convention. Earlier this week, the group Geeks for CONsent presented a petition calling for a new policy, saying some women — especially those who attend in costume — report being being groped, harassed and insulted.

Sexual Harassment At Comic-Con Leads To Call For New Convention Policy

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Amid the costumes and fantasy of this weekend’s Comic-Con convention, a group of young women drew widespread attention to a very real issue — allegations of sexual harassment at the annual pop-culture festival.

Geeks for CONsent, founded by three women from Philadelphia, gathered nearly 2,600 signatures on an online petition supporting a formal anti-harassment policy at Comic-Con. Conventioneers told Geeks for CONsent they had been groped, followed and unwillingly photographed during the four-day confab.

Meanwhile, what Geeks for CONsent and others regarded as blatant objectification continued on the convention floor. Scantily clad women were still used as decoration for some presentations, and costumed women were described as “vaguely slutty” by panel moderator Craig Ferguson. When Dwayne Johnson made a surprise appearance to promote “Hercules,” 10 women in belly-baring outfits stood silently in front of the stage for no apparent reason.

Groping, cat-calling and other forms of sexual harassment are a larger social issue, not just a Comic-Con problem. And many comics and movies still portray women as damsels in distress. But Geeks for CONsent says things are amplified at the festival, where fantasy plays such a large role.

“It’s a separate, more specific issue within the convention space,” said Rochelle Keyhan, 29, director of Geeks for CONsent. “It’s very much connected (to the larger problem) and it’s the same phenomena, but manifesting a little more sexually vulgar in the comic space.”

“Comic-Con has an explicit Code of Conduct that addresses harassing and offensive behavior,” said Comic-Con International in a statement on Sunday to The Associated Press. “This Code of Conduct is made available online as well as on page two of the Events Guide that is given to each attendee.”

Earlier, Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer told the Los Angeles Times that “anyone being made to feel uncomfortable at our show is obviously a concern for us.” He said additional security was in place this year, including an increased presence by San Diego Police.

Keyhan’s focus on Comic-Con began with a movement launched in her hometown called HollabackPhilly, to help end public harassment against women and members of the LGBT community. She and her colleagues developed a comic book on the subject in hopes of engaging middle- and high-school students, which is what brought them to Comic-Con.

Costuming, or cosplay, is a big part of the popular convention, with male and female fans dressing as their favorite characters, regardless of gender. A man might wear a Wonder Woman outfit, and a woman could dress as Wolverine. Keyhan and her colleagues — all in costume — carried signs and passed out temporary tattoos during the convention that read, “Cosplay does not equal consent.”

In addition to the existing Comic-Con’s Code of Conduct, Geeks for CONsent wants the 45-year-old convention to adopt a clearly stated policy and says staff members should to be trained to handle sexual harassment complaints.

“It makes it feel safer for the person being harassed to report it and also for bystanders who witness (inappropriate behavior),” Keyhan said.

Toni Darling, a 24-year-old model who was dressed as Wonder Woman on Saturday, said the issue goes way beyond Comic-Con.

“I don’t think it has anything to do with cosplay or anything to do with costumes,” she said. “People who are the kind of people who are going to take a photo of you when you’re not looking from behind are going to do that regardless, whether you’re in costume or not.”

Still, she’d like to see an advisory in the Comic-Con program against surreptitious photography, and a clearer statement from Geeks for CONsent. She found some fans were afraid to take photos, even when she was posing at a booth on the showroom floor.

“The kind of behavior that needs to be modified,” she said, “is somebody taking a photo of you bent over while you’re signing a print.”

Guillermo del Toro Unveils Comic-Con ‘Pacific Rim,’ ‘Crimson Peak’ Fan Experiences

Guillermo del Toro is in the world-building business. The director of Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim and the upcoming gothic tale Crimson Peak is known for signature visuals, and an ability to craft rich universes on the movie screen.

And beginning tonight at San Diego Comic-Con, he and film production company Legendary Pictures are bringing those universes to life with a new initiative that allows attendees the chance to immerse themselves in the movies through “experiential exhibits.”

Before it was unveiled at “Preview Night” of the pop-culture mega-event, which officially opens tomorrow, Huffington Post received an early walkthrough with del Toro of the Legendary booth, which centers around a virtual reality Pacific Rim experience and a “gothic gallery” for next year’s Crimson Peak.

“We are giving them a taste of the set, a physical representation of how elaborate the set can be,” said del Toro of the custom environments. “For a moment, they will be in the world of the movie, even if it’s a brief visit.”

That visit includes the Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot “Drift With the Rift” Experience. Based on last year’s blockbuster about giant monsters vs. giant robots (or kaiju vs. jaeger), the combat simulator utilizes Oculus Rift’s virtual reality tech and original film assets from Industrial Light & Magic. After strapping on the Oculus Rift headset, users will enter a 250-story fighting machine and go head-to-head against a kaiju.

Much like within the film, a pilot links with a co-pilot and “drifts” into an alternate state of being, where it feels like you’re really operating at dizzying heights. As you turn your head, so does your VR character take a look around within the world. It is necessary to do so as well, since the kaiju Knifehead shows up to make wreak havoc. After getting lost within the Oculus VR world, users receive a personalized Jaeger Pilot badge for going through the adventure.

The exhibit, said del Toro, will allow visitors to immerse themselves and feel what it’s like to be a jaeger pilot, and since he was involved in each step of the development, he “knows exactly the experience fans are going to get.”

Even though the film came out last year, the Pacific Rim space at the Legendary booth exists because it is a universe del Toro and Legendary want to keep alive.

“So this is one stone in the building of a continuous bridge by expanding the experience and mythology,” he said. “We create a world and we’re keeping it alive.”

Whereas the Pacific Rim presence is designed to promote an expanding brand that includes a comic, a 2017 sequel and planned animated series, the Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery is dedicated to welcoming fans into the world of the October 2015 film. A handcrafted tiny hallway set from del Toro, the gallery is like a cabinet of curiosities that includes props and costumes. It feels alive, and for a few moments, it is as if one is exploring a haunted house – but one that has so many more mysteries beyond ghosts. Accompanied by a soundscape designed by Academy Award winner Randy Thom, the brief tour allows one to touch rotted, peeling wallpaper; examine the portrait of character within the film; look through the simulated destroyed roof into a snowy sky and peer down a hallway where specters occasionally appear. It is intimate and personal, and serves to tease clues from the Crimson Peak tale. Everything attendees see is part of a larger story within the movie — including a lot of butterflies, an obvious symbology del Toro will play with in the plot.

“It functions as a mini haunted attraction in a way, and has an eerie beauty that the movie has,” said the director. “You’re given a mini mini version of the set, and the atmosphere of what the film Crimson Peak is going to be.”

“We wanted the atmosphere of the house to eke into you, to touch you,” said Emily Castel, Chief Marketing Officer, Legendary Entertainment. “It is very layered like the film so you become have a vested interest in the journey [del Toro] is taking you on.”

In fact, the two spaces at comic con this year sum up Castel’s mission. A principal of the 533 Marketing Agency, a leading experiential marketing agency bought by Legendary two years ago, she is charged with crafting unique ways for fans to connect to movies.

“The best way is to immerse them into that and create natural extension to the world,” she said. Moreover, she said del Toro is an ideal filmmaker to do just that.

“He’s versed in worlds you want to live in and be in, and both these films are so rich and so ripe for this type of marketing experience”

For del Toro, these installments serve as the next step for a storyteller.

“The purpose is to share part of that storytelling in a very tangible way. It is more than a story or series of images but part of a memory to hold; it really is a beautiful effort to curate and build for their enjoyment.”

“I’m a very big fan of attractions, rides and exhibits,” he added. “They are by no means a whole attraction but it’s a taste of the spirit of it.”

Although Legendary is evangelizing its mission that they are more than movie trailers and old-school marketing via del Toro’s projects, it’s not the first time the company has activated a large-scale experience.

It went with a monster-sized installment at last year’s con with the Godzilla Experience. An enormous warehouse-sized environment, the attraction involved walking through Tokyo streets before a Gojira rampage. Attendees went from a busy marketplace into a simulated underground bunker to a Tokyo skyscraper, and were treated to glimpses of the creature. It was a highlight in San Diego in 2013 and was part of a goodwill campaign to reinsure fans that Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla wouldn’t be a repeat of the 1998 film disaster.

“We treated this icon with the demonstrative reverence worthy of the icon, and made him relevant to a whole new audience,” said Castel. “We set the tone, then that tone was maintained.”

While she admits it is difficult to measure marketing like the Godzilla or the Jaeger Pilot experiences, but said she believes it does correlate to box office receipts.

“These stay with you, it touches you. You feel something and therefore will react differently than if you’re a passive recipient of a marketing message, such as a trailer.”

As such, Castel said fans can expect more from Legendary, and even hopes to take the exhibits beyond the con. She said the plan is to work early and directly with filmmakers on future releases to become a “more immediate conduit between their vision and the experience of a consumer.”

“It allows you to actually have a sensory experience within worlds that come to mean a huge amount to fans; the minute you can live it and experience it, you have a rapport with it, and live with it on a different level.”

“For me, it’s creating conversation,” said del Toro. “There is no tangible, quantifiable upside that you can prove with the research and numbers — but comic con is about celebrating the things we love.”
