Destination XL Results Improve, but CEO Separation Costs an Issue

Destination XL posted improved results in the fiscal first quarter, but there was a bit of pushback from one Wall Street analyst on the transition costs for a new chief executive officer expected later this year.
In the period ended May 5, the men’s big and tall retailer cut its losses to $ 3.1 million compared with $ 6.1 million in the same period last year. Comparable-store sales rose 2.2 percent while total sales rose 5.3 percent to $ 113.3 million from $ 107.6 million in the prior year’s first quarter. On a non-GAAP basis, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization more than doubled to $ 5.1 million from $ 2.5 million last year.
In a conference call Wednesday morning, David Levin, president and chief executive officer of the 300-unit-plus company, said the “sales momentum” it had enjoyed in the fourth quarter of last year continued in the first quarter with increases in transactions and dollars-per-transaction. He said results in May have also continued to be strong, with gains in the mid- to high-single digits.
Even so, the company on May 16 “took an important step toward achieving acceptable EBITDA margins by reorganizing and rightsizing our corporate workforce,” Levin said. The company eliminated 56 positions, or 15 percent

25 Ways To Cut Your Wedding Catering Costs

By Sharon Naylor for Bridal Guide

Take a bite out of your food and drink budget with these clever ideas.

1. Hand pass pricier appetizers, like shrimp, scallops or other seafood items, rather than setting them out for guests to serve themselves. Caterers say guests consume 40 percent fewer pieces this way.

Related: 101 Ways to Save Thousands on Your Wedding

2. “Put out big bowls of colorful, lush salads with grilled vegetables, which allows you to show generosity without spending a whole lot,” says Shai Tertner, award-winning chef at Shiraz in New York City. Tertner suggests adding punch to your presentation by using colorful bowls, giant woks and other unusual platters.

3. Comparison shop for seafood. For example, calamari and mussels are often half the price of shrimp cocktail and scampi. Ask your wedding caterer for a list of less costly seafood appetizers.

Related: Secret Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding Vendors

4. Skip the big cubed-cheese platter. It’s often the least popular item at a wedding cocktail hour, because most guests have had cheese platters at office parties and family get-togethers. No one will miss it.

5. Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean your crudités have to show it. Instead of carrot sticks and cucumber rounds, choose artichoke hearts, broccoli flowers, radishes cut in heart shapes or other creative choices, with flavored dipping sauces.

Related: 50 Fun Menu Innovations for Your Reception

6. Use unique plates. Leila Miller, award-winning event planner at Feastivities Catering in Philadelphia, says, “People eat with their eyes first, so focus on the presentation. Serving trays that are a bit different, like small tapas-style plates, can add a twist to the fare without adding to your bill.”

Related: 7 Unique Ways to Display Your Wedding Food

7. Serve macaroni and cheese in martini glasses, mini grilled cheese bites made in sandwich presses and tiny crab cakes with tartar sauce. These perennial crowd-pleasers come at about one-third the cost of traditional cocktail party fare.

8. Offer theme stations, such as a fajita station or Thai station. “The Asian station, where it’s more about the display, is very popular now,” Tertner says. “We set out large woks or serve food in take-out containers that coordinate with the wedding’s theme or colors. We also create pyramids of basmati and jasmine rice, lots of egg noodles and a range of condiments. These ingredients are not costly, but it looks as though you’ve invested a lot.”

9. Skip the raw bar — though trendy, it’s one of the most exorbitant kinds of stations. Instead, Miller suggests a hand-passed hors d’oeuvre, like tequila-cured salmon served in martini glasses.

Related: Wedding Splurges: What's Really Worth the Cost?

10. You don’t need to have a carving station. Prime rib, ham and pork loin are too heavy and filling, not to mention quite pricey, for the cocktail hour, says Bill Chriswell, catering director at The Park Savoy in Florham Park, New Jersey.

11. In cool weather, serve mini cups of clam chowder (again, you’re serving seafood at a minimal price), lobster bisque, acorn squash, or any other flavors that are easy on the wallet.

Related: 100 Ideas for Winter Weddings

12. No one will need a five-course feast after cocktails — three will do just fine. If you offered salads at the cocktail party, eliminate the salad at dinner (double savings!).

13. Keep the salad and combine it with an appetizer. A salad with two grilled shrimp is a budget success because the chef can buy less for both courses.

14. Use a great sauce on less expensive chicken or pasta dishes. Tertner suggests doing something unusual — an espresso sauce over chicken, for example.

15. Miller says, “Forget a top-dollar filet! Less costly braised boneless short ribs are a wonderful choice, served plated or at food stations.” Ask your wedding caterer to show you price options for different cuts of lamb and pork as well as beef.

Related: 50 Cost-Cutting Wedding Swaps

16. Make pasta more interesting by choosing pumpkin ravioli, or spinach and goat-cheese manicotti.

Related: Finding Your Wedding Caterer

17. Instead of offering a choice of three entrées, design a platter with beef medallions and grilled shrimp or crab cakes. You’ll use far less food than if you had to plan for a large quantity of all three entrées to have on hand should guests change their minds.

18. For savings of up to 20 percent, consider family-style dishes. Try platters of sliced meat or pasta that guests can pass around.

19. If you plan to have children at the reception, choose a wedding caterer who offers free or half-priced meals for children up to age 16.

Related: 10 Ways to Make Your Wedding More Kid-Friendly

20. If you design a tasting menu of seven or eight small courses instead of four big ones, you’ll save about 15 percent.

21. Go bite-size with desserts, like tiny chocolate-covered cheesecakes. By controlling portions, you’re saving one-third the price of a full dessert buffet.

Related: 25 Delicious Wedding Cake Alternatives

22. Instead of a full bar, serve beer and wine with one or two signature cocktails that you’ve personalized with a clever name and your wedding colors.

Related: 25 Creative Ideas for Your Wedding Bar

23. Dress up your signature drinks with fun garnishes, suggests Miller. Ask the bar manager to provide curled lemon and lime peels, orange slices or mini fruit kebabs on toothpicks to coordinate with your wedding colors. These garnishes are often free, and because they add to the festive look, everyone thinks you’ve spent more than you really have.

Related: Stock the Bar: What You Need for Your Wedding

24. If you can’t negotiate the corkage fee out of your contract entirely, at least discuss lowering it. At up to $ 2 per bottle, it’s worth a try. If you’re stocking your own bar, research less expensive wine vintages on winespectator.com.

Related: 30 Unexpected Wedding Costs Brides Forget to Budget For

25. Skip the champagne for your wedding toast. Guests can toast you with the drinks they have in hand. Or look into serving easily available sparkling wines from France (cremant), Spain (cava) or Italy (prosecco) instead.

This Stupid Rock Costs $85 At Nordstrom. Seriously.

In the latest sign that the rich should be eaten and the end is nigh, Nordstrom has apparently started selling a totally regular-looking rock for $ 85.

Yes, in what is apparently not a joke but in fact real life, the department store is selling a rock in a little pouch for an amount that is frankly insulting to humans who spend their money on things like rent or food or, well, anything besides $ 85 rocks.

Surely by now you must be wondering whether this is the sort of fake news that has infiltrated the internet and clouded our collective judgment. But no, it is not. This is the reality we live in now. And in the blurb attached to what is just, really, a rock, the creator of said rock doesn’t even pretend that there’s some specific purpose for it. Because again, it’s just a rock:

A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you, but this smooth Los Angeles-area stone—wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast whipstitching—is sure to draw attention wherever it rests. A traditional hardening process gives the leather a beautiful ombré effect. Like all Made Solid leather pieces, this one is cut, shaped, sewn and finished by hand in artist Peter Maxwell’s Los Angeles studio. Using vintage leatherworking tools and traditional saddle-stitching techniques, Maxwell aims to create beautiful designs that embody both simplicity and functionality, and that develop rich character and patina over time.

Made Solid, the “creator” of this “product,” states that most of the rocks are around 3 inches by 4.5 inches by 2 inches, but makes clear that “Each piece is unique and will vary slightly,” which makes sense. Because they are rocks.

Not able to afford an $ 85 rock? The wallet feeling a little light because of student debt, rent and food? Hey, don’t worry, because there’s another rock you can buy for just sixty five dollars

When historians look back on the year 2016, the year when the first real cracks in democratic capitalism began to show, will they mention the rock? Will they see it as a sign of a people searching for meaning in all the wrong places? Of a society that spread its collective wealth incorrectly? Or will they simply look the other way, face to the wind, as they shout into the ethers, “WHAT HAPPENED? HOW COULD THE GREATEST NATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD SO QUICKLY CRUMBLE TO ITS KNEES?”

We don’t know yet. But for now, at least the shipping on this rock is free. And that’s pretty sick.

Higher SG&A Costs Hitting Retailers

It’s time for retailers to trim payroll, turn the lights down and eliminate supply-chain inefficiencies.
Retailers are getting pummeled by higher selling, general and administrative costs, according to an analysis by WWD of publicly traded mass, off-price and specialty apparel companies. Of the 33 retailers analyzed, 18 posted higher SG&A-to-sales ratios in the most recent quarter over the prior year. By channel, 10 of those companies were specialty retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, New York & Company Inc., Urban Outfitters and Pacific Sunwear of California Inc.
Within the 18 retailers that showed higher SG&A to sales costs, nine posted changes of more than 100 basis points, which is a red flag to investors who prefer not to see triple-digit changes. More tolerable increases would be between 10 and 50 basis points.
SG&A line items include things such as employee payroll and pensions as well as commissions. Other items include utilities, rent and insurance as well as general maintenance costs. Marketing costs are also included in SG&A line items. All of these items differ from “cost of goods sold,” which are the direct, attributable costs related to selling (or making) a product.
From an investor’s perspective, SG&A-to-sales ratios reveal how effectively a retailer uses

5 Ways to Cut Costs on Your Wedding Flower Budget

Flowers seem to be one of the most frustrating items for brides and grooms to contemplate ordering and paying for during the wedding process. To be fair, unless you’ve been through a wedding flower order before, the cost can be surprising at first glance. But then you have to take a lot of different things into account.

Your flower selection, your wedding location, and the time of year will all come into play when you create your wedding décor budget. I recently laughed when I read another wedding planner’s comment in an article where she said “yeah, sure, you can have hundreds of individual orchid blossoms (real or fake) hanging from your reception venue ceiling. But you have to pay somebody to string all of those, hang all the individual blooms, and then take it all down again the next day.” Exactly. There’s labor involved.0

Reality check, right? But it’s true. Lots of the complicated decors featured in bridal magazines are staged sets – or they’re from “platinum” weddings. I’ve had some brides with decent budgets, but I’ve never had the pleasure of planning on an unlimited budget. And that’s what you have to have if you want to recreate some of the pictures brides and grooms are finding today on wedding websites and Pinterest and Instagram. Don’t forget Lover-ly, as if Pinterest didn’t offer enough torturous ideas for wedding planners.

Here are some ideas to help you choose bouquets and centerpieces that won’t end up costing as much as a new car:

1) Consider flowers that do not require a lot of hand-wiring and special work in order to be used in a bouquet. Those cascading bouquets with Stephanotis blooms hanging off the ivy are lovely, but they didn’t grow that way. Somebody has to wire or tape each individual bloom. And let’s talk about orchids – if you know what they look like on the stem, you know each individual bloom only has a maximum of a two inch stem. In order to put them in bouquets, each bloom has to be put into a water tube and fixed onto a faux stem that can then be incorporated into the bouquet in a manner that you cannot tell those stems aren’t real. Choosing flowers with legitimate stems – like roses, lilies, calla lilies, Gerbera daisies and many, many more – can seriously reduce your bouquet budget.

2) Simple and elegant trumps overdone any day of the week, and if you’re getting married someplace that is already beautiful, you do not need large floral centerpieces.
True life: Your guests hate them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cringed watching a wobbly groomsmen remove a centerpiece so he can see the people on the other side of the table. Candles, hurricane vases, lanterns and many other things can cost you a lot less than flowers. But you can also have some flowers on your table to give you pops of color without doing massive arrangements. Consider using three different heights of cylinder vase with three individual stems of gorgeous calla lilies or orchids.

3) You can have flowers on the table without using them in centerpieces. Consider tying one simple orchid blossom to each napkin, or stuffing the bottom of a hurricane vases with vibrant rose petals as a nest for a pillar candle. Sometimes just sprinkling petals can give a rich look to things with candlelight.

4) Remember that if you choose flowers that aren’t happy in the climate you’re getting married in (or it’s totally the wrong time of year for them everywhere), you won’t be able to re-use the bouquets in your décor because they will likely be dead. If you choose flowers that thrive in your area and in that climate, you can put those bouquets on the cake table or guest book table and they’ll look gorgeous all night. They shouldn’t even need to be in vases – they look much prettier displayed laying on their sides. If you use hydrangea, or tulips, or peonies, for example, or something else that is extremely heat sensitive, it’s likely dying by the time your photos finish and won’t look pretty on display at the reception.

5) Limiting the variety of flowers you use for your bridal party and décor will reduce the cost.
It’s more extreme for a remote location that has to bring in your flowers in bulk – but really, any décor plan involving nine different kinds of flowers is simply going to cost more than sticking to several specific blooms. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have variety, but be aware that variety may cause a little sticker shock as the supplier charges more for smaller quantities to the florist creating your bouquets and centerpieces.

Finally, keep in mind that your wedding ceremony itself isn’t going to last 30 minutes. Whatever you’re spending on décor for that short time period costs you a lot considering how long you won’t be seeing it. The most beautiful thing at the wedding is supposed to be the bride. While I’m a fan of rose petal aisles and special chair décor, huge arches and canopies dripping in expensive flowers cost an arm and a leg – sometimes more than all the bridal bouquets combined. Think carefully about how many flowers you really need at your actual wedding ceremony. You and your bridesmaids are already holding armfuls.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!
