Twin Peaks Creator David Lynch Says Trump Could Be ‘One of the Greatest Presidents in History’

David Lynch thinks Donald Trump‘s presidency has disrupted the America’s political system in a good way.

The Twin Peaks creator and director spoke to The Guardian about his political leanings, revealing that he voted for Bernie Sanders in the primary and thinks he voted Libertarian in the election. But although he didn’t support Trump, he now feels the real estate mogul’s administration could change the country for the better.

“He could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much,” Lynch said. “No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way.”

While Lynch says he supports an outsider changing things, he doesn’t think Trump is doing a good job himself. He just hopes his win opens the door to more options to serve as president.

“Our so-called leaders can’t take the country forward, can’t get anything done,” Lynch said. “Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this.

Selena Gomez Visits Childhood Home and Wonders If It ‘Could Have Been Better Than My Life Today’

Selena Gomez spent part of the weekend reflecting on her past — and taking a literal trip down memory lane.

The 25-year-old singer shared a photo of herself perched on the doorstep of the Texas home where she spent her youth, on Saturday, writing on Instagram, “The home I grew up in, from birth to 13… (no one was home when I knocked this time lol).”

“I visit this place every chance I get,” Gomez said. “In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you.”

RELATED: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Kick Off the New Year with a Sweaty Pilates Session

There have recently been strains between Gomez and her mom Mandy Teefey, noticed by fans after the duo unfollowed each other on Instagram. But their recent estrangement wasn’t sparked solely by pop star’s newly rekindled relationship with Justin Bieber.

“It’s more complicated than just fighting over a guy,” a source close to the family previously told PEOPLE. “Mandy and Selena have had their ups and down before. This isn’t the first time.”

Though the mother and daughter weren’t on speaking terms toward the end of last year, Gomez “also wants to give her mom some space,” added the insider. “When they fight, they fight hard. But when they love, they also love hard.”

RELATED VIDEO: Selena Gomez Isn’t Currently Speaking to Mom Mandy Teefey and Wants to ‘Give Her Space’: Source

Multiple sources previously told PEOPLE Gomez’s family was concerned about the on-again romance and that Bieber was determined to show her loved ones he had matured.

An insider also confirmed that Teefey, 41, had voluntarily sought treatment at a hospital in Los Angeles in December but dismissed a report that it was because of an argument with her daughter over Bieber. “It’s been a stressful time for Mandy and she made the decision herself to go to the hospital and make sure everything was okay,” said the source.

After ringing in the new year together in Mexico, Bieber and Gomez headed to a private gym session in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

A source previously told PEOPLE that they welcomed 2018 in Cabo with friends, adding that the pair are “doing great.”

Woman Who Sabotaged Fiancé’s Kayak Sentenced to 4 Years — But Could Be Released Next Month

Angelika Graswald, the New York woman who pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the drowning death of her fiancé as they kayaked on the Hudson River in 2015, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months to four years in state prison, her attorney confirms to PEOPLE.

Graswald had faced murder charges in the death of Vincent Viafore, 46, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in July.

Graswald’s attorney, Richard Portale, previously told PEOPLE he expects her to be home as early as next month due to time served since her arrest in April of 2015.

At the sentencing, Viafore’s sister, Laura Rice, told Judge Robert Freehill that she thinks of her brother’s “last moments alive…and I visualize him trying to survive hypothermia in the freezing cold river, confused and not understanding why the woman who said she loved him and wanted to marry him did nothing to help him,” reports the Poughkeepsie Journal

Viafore drowned on April 19, 2015 in the Hudson River after his kayak capsized in rough seas and windy conditions. He and Graswald were kayaking back to the mainland from an afternoon on Bannerman Island, an island in the Hudson River in Dutchess County.

Ten days later, Graswald was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after police said she told them she removed a plug from the kayak to destabilize it and had taken a connector off the paddle.

Once Viafore was in the river, prosecutors said Graswald pulled Viafore’s paddle away from him as he fought for his life, then waited until he had drowned before calling 911.

The motive was $ 250,000 in life insurance policies, prosecutors said.

In her plea deal to the reduced charges, Graswald admitted she knew that the locking clip to Viaforte’s kayak paddle was missing, that he was not wearing a life vest or a wet suit, and that the waters in the Hudson River were dangerously cold and rough at the time.

But it was Graswald’s lack of urgency in seeking help for Viafore after he entered the freezing April waters that Judge Freehill said led to Viafore’s death.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“It was the immediate act of your being in your kayak and Vincent floundering in the water, and you taking no action to help him,” Freehill said, according to the Times-Herald Record.

Graswald has long maintained her innocence regarding the murder charges. In a statement her attorney released after the sentencing hearing, Graswald said: “I am not a murderer. I’ve said that from the beginning. If I could do anything to bring Vince back, I would.”

Graswald is a native of Latvia, and Viafore’s family wants Graswald deported after she finishes her sentence — a sentence they feel is far too short, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

In an interview with reporters after the hearing, Viafore’s mother, Mary Ann Viafore, told reporters that “justice was not served for my son. Four years for taking someone’s life? No way.”

7 Pokemon Decks That Could Win the World Championships

With the 2017 Pokemon World Championships just around the corner, from August 18 to 20, we’ve got our eye on a handful of decks that could win the TCG tournament. The grand prize for the TCG Masters division tournament is $ 25,000, which is the largest payout of the whole championship (the VGC winner gets $ 10,000), making it a super competitive field.

Before we get to our picks for the top decks, we want to give a reminder of the craziness that happened last year. Everyone thought the metagame would be predictable with all the same popular decks that had been played all year long, but Japan’s Shintaro Ito surprised everyone when he took 1st place using Mega Audino-EX. That card was considered binder trash by most, but it also happened to be the silver bullet to last year’s metagame, allowing Ito to sweep the finals match in under 25 minutes. The lesson here is to take note of these powerful and popular decks, but also to always expected the unexpected.

Amazon’s Grip On The Book World Could Silence The Stories That Matter

This morning, Amazon ― the online bookseller-turned-everything store ― opened the doors to its latest brick-and-mortar outpost in New York City’s Columbus Circle. The company added in-person retail to its arsenal of buying options in 2015, when it opened a store in Seattle. Beginning today, it occupies a space where a Borders once was.

Unlike its competitors ― which mostly include independent bookstores, after the company’s rise lead to the fall of Borders and many Barnes & Noble locations ― Amazon’s physical bookstore relies on sales data to determine which titles will be prominently displayed. At the Columbus Circle location, a table labeled “Highly Rated: 4.8 Stars & Above” sits near the entrance. On it, are such titles as 100 Days of Real Food: Fast & Fabulous: The Easy and Delicious Way to Cut Out Processed Food by Lisa Leake and Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat by Chrissy Teigen.

For publishers, especially those who support the work of emerging authors, disempowered authors or authors whose voices aren’t in chorus with the mainstream, this data-based approach to bookselling is disconcerting.

Michael Reynolds, the editor-in-chief of Europa Editions, told HuffPost that Amazon’s ratings-based system isn’t conducive to discovering writers like the lyrical, wave-making Elena Ferrante, whom Europa publishes.

“Things like Tolstoy are going to have lower ratings than the new book by the new YouTube star.
Dennis Johnson, co-publisher of Melville House Books

“While a new bookstore, any new bookstore, is generally good news, I can’t see how Amazon applying its unsatisfactory recommendation engine to a physical space is going to result in the kind of discovery experience a reader has when she enters any good brick-and-mortar store,” Reynolds said. “It is certainly not going to help with bringing about the kind of bibliodiversity that, with authors like Elena Ferrante, Muriel Barbery, Boualem Sansal and Domenico Starnone, we seek to cultivate, and that I think is more important today than ever.”

Dennis Johnson, the co-publisher of Melville House, agreed. “Things like Tolstoy are going to have lower ratings than the new book by the new YouTube star,” he told HuffPost. “Real literature is slowly not going to be available there.”

Caroline Casey, the managing director of Coffee House Press, was more optimistic about readers’ appetite for well-told stories, and the tenacity of indie presses.

“I don’t expect [Amazon’s] experiments to damage independent bookstores, because what people value them for isn’t replicable in the Amazon model,” she told HuffPost. “So those booksellers, who are our very best advocates and sell our books better than I ever could hope to, should be fine. And so will we.”

Coffee House Press describes itself as “committed to diversity and inclusion,” and that mission statement is reflected in the titles it publishes, including Valeria Luiselli’s The Story of My Teeth, Saeed Jones’s Prelude to Bruise and Jade Sharma’s Problems. Casey says that while a “significant portion” of Coffee Houses’ sales come from Amazon, she doesn’t expect the seller’s physical locations to have either a positive or negative impact. Instead, she expects that indie bookstores will continue to account for most of the press’ in-person sales.

“A good bookstore offers not just curation, but also personality and the opportunity not [just] to find what you want, but to also find out what you want,” Casey said. “Amazon might have a lot of customer data, but it’s not the kind that yields a surprising, joyful bookstore visit.”

The decision to open brick-and-mortar stores isn’t the only recent change Amazon has made to its bookselling approach. Last month, the retailer tweaked its online buying options, so that publishers are no longer automatically granted the right to be listed as the default sellers for their titles. Instead, third-party retailers are now allowed to compete to become a book’s default seller. So, prime real estate on the site is often granted to those with the lowest costs.

Casey declined to comment on this new development. But, Johnson and Reynolds agreed that the move could hurt publishers and, consequently, authors, who aren’t owed a cut of the sale from third-party distributors.

I cannot be anything but concerned by Amazon’s insistence on chipping away at the perceived and actual value of books.
Michael Reynolds, Editor-in-Chief of Europa Editions

“The Amazon paradigm sees books as a function of a hyper-competitive market rather than cultural products that create a market, shape it, and at times disrupt it,” Reynolds said. “The most recent development concerning Amazon’s buy box will make it increasingly difficult for authors to be paid adequately for their work when it is sold through Amazon, and for publishers to invest in bringing new and diverse voices to the market and maintaining a robust backlist. As a publisher animated by an abiding belief in the broad and lasting value not only of books but of ‘bibliodiversity,’ I cannot be anything but concerned by Amazon’s insistence on chipping away at the perceived and actual value of books.”

“It’s another instance of Amazon killing the goose that lays the eggs,” Johnson said. “Screwing their partners in the ecosystem that naturally grows around any kind of product. What they’re doing now is something that nobody makes any money from, except Amazon.”

And it’s not just indie presses who could suffer from Amazon’s business decisions. In fact, Johnson said that Melville House ― which only relies on Amazon for around 25 percent of its sales ― will likely fare better than big-five publishers such as Random House, which leans on Amazon to sell classics and other backlist titles.

“This is treacherous for everybody in the business,” Johnson said. “Everybody’s threatened by this.”

“Amazon is nothing if not Trumpian in their behavior,” he continued. “The ruthlessness, the naked capitalism. It’s all there. They’re positively Trumpian. They have that in them.”
