House of Horrors Dad Accused of Lewd Act on Child as Couple Plead Not Guilty to Abuse Charges

The California couple who allegedly abused and held captive their 13 children pleaded not guilty Thursday to torture, abuse, and false imprisonment charges.

David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louis Anna Turpin, 49, of Perris, were charged with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, six counts of child abuse or neglect and 12 counts of false imprisonment, Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin said in a press release.

David Turpin was also charged with one count of lewd act on a child under the age of 14 by force, fear, or duress.

Both of the Turpins — who wore dark suits and, according to CBS News, showed no emotion at their arraignment — are next due in court Feb. 23.

If convicted, each faces up to 94 years to life in prison.

RELATED: Prosecutor Details Alleged Abuse in House of Horrors: Beatings, Starvation, Showers Once a Year

The Turpins were arrested after their 17-year-old daughter, who had allegedly been planning her escape for two years, climbed through one of the windows of their home early on Sunday and called 911 using a disconnected cell phone she had found, authorities have said.

Police allege that the 13 Turpin children — ranging in ages from 2 to 29 — were found living in squalor, with some “shackled” to furniture.

At a news conference Thursday, authorities alleged that the children were allowed to shower no more than once a year and were regularly fed very little. They alleged the kids were restrained by ropes and later chains as a form of punishment.

Malnutrition apparently stunted their growth, Hestrin said. One of the victims, 12, has the weight of an average 7-year-old, police said. The 29-year-old victim weighed just 82 pounds when found.

Medical officials treating the siblings say they face a long recovery.

“In more than 20 years as a prosecutor in Riverside County, this is one of the most disturbing cases I’ve seen,” Hestrin said in his press release Thursday. “We are fully prepared to seek justice in this case and to do so in a way that protects all of these victims from further harm.”

Meanwhile, authorities said two Maltese terriers found in the home are healthy and trained.

“The animals, one white and one black, appear healthy and friendly and are leash-trained, according to Christina Avila, a senior animal control officer,” a press release from the City of Perris said of the two female one-year-old dogs, who are siblings.

Authorities released images of the two seemingly well-fed dogs, who are being put up for adoption.

Expecting high interest in the pair – who must be adopted together – the City of Perris will hold a raffle to place the dogs in a new home, according to the release.

Prosecutor: ‘It is a Horrible Case’

Speaking to reporters after their court hearing on Thursday, attorneys for David and Louise declined to comment beyond broad reactions about the allegations against them.

“It doesn’t get much more serious in terms of severity of the conduct being alleged and also the exposure in prison,” said Jeff Moore, Louise’s attorney.

He tells PEOPLE, “The allegations carry life in state prison. In terms of possible sentences this is about as serious as it gets.”

Echoing that, David’s attorney, David Macher, says, “It is a very serious case. Anytime you are talking about a century of imprisonment is a very serious case.”

Prosecutor Kevin Beecham says, “It is a horrible case. It is unfortunate for everyone involved. Thank goodness they are out now.”

If you have any information about this family or these alleged crimes, please call Senior District Attorney Investigator Wade D. Walsvick  at 951-955-5400.

Texas Couple Awarded $3.4M After Wrongful Convictions for Abusing Kids in Satanic Rituals: Reports

A Texas couple was awarded approximately $ 3.4 million on Tuesday, decades after they were accused of sexually abusing children during alleged satanic rituals outside of their Austin child care care facility, according to multiple news reports.

Dan and Fran Keller spent more than 21 years in prison after they were found guilty in 1992, the Austin American-Statesman reports. The money they are set to receive is from a state fund to compensate wrongfully convicted people.

The Kellers were accused of sexually abusing a 3-year-old girl after children at the day care they operated out of their home told investigators of “satanic rituals, drinking blood laced cool aide, taking children to Mexico by plane to be raped-dismemberment of bodies, there were even stories of putting children in a pool with sharks,” according to local TV station KTBC.

They were each sentenced to 48 years in prison but were freed in 2013 and a Texas appeals court overturned their convictions in 2015, the Statesman reports, writing on Tuesday night:

“The Keller case made national news after three children accused them in 1991 of leading ghastly satanic rituals. … No evidence of such activities was discovered at their in-home day care facility, and the case against them collapsed about two decades later when the only physical evidence of abuse was acknowledged as a mistake by the examining physician.”

In June, the Travis County, Texas, district attorney, Margaret Moore, dismissed the cases against the Kellers and declared them “actually innocent,” citing “no credible evidence” that they committed the crimes of which they were accused, according to station KXAN.

The wrongful convictions have been cited as examples of a widespread “satanic panic” of the ’80s and ’90s.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“They are now compensated and no longer must fear homelessness or lack of health insurance,” the Kellers’ attorney wrote in an email, KXAN reports. “They are buying a home and can live out their lives in peace and quiet. I am very happy for them.”

The Kellers’ wish list includes buying a house, a car, health insurance and better hearing aids for Dan, 75, according to the Statesman.

Fran, 67, told the paper that she and her husband were ecstatic with the news.

“This means we don’t have to worry about pinching pennies on Social Security, and late bills,” she said. “It means we will actually be free. We can start living — and no more nightmares.”

Utah Couple Who Lost Five Babies in 11 Months Honor Their Children’s Memory: We Wake Up to ‘Raw Hearts and Pain’

After losing their second child, Shanna, to a congenital heart defect three months after she was born, Jason and Clarissa Osborn of Spanish Fork, Utah, were overjoyed six months later to learn that they were expecting quadruplet daughters with the help of infertility treatments.

Through baby showers put on by friends and family, they filled their home with four of everything: four bassinets, four high chairs, four strollers, four car seats and case after case of formula and diapers.

Then, on June 11 this summer, they were hit once again with heartache.

Clarissa, 28, went into labor in her 23rd week of pregnancy, requiring an emergency C-section. Kylie, Ellie, Savannah and Lexi, who were each born weighing less than one pound, all died within three days of each other.

“We were able to say goodbye to them all, and we were grateful for that,” Jason, 32, who works in human resources for Nestle, tells PEOPLE. “But after already losing one daughter, to lose another four was heart-wrenching. I kept thinking, ‘Why all four? Couldn’t just one have made it?’ It was extremely difficult to realize that none of them were coming home.”

“I knew that it would be emotionally hard to go home and see all of those baby things piled up,” adds Clarissa, a homemaker, with one son, Carter, 4. “So we arranged to have somebody come and get everything and donate it to families who have babies born with heart defects like Shanna, through a charity called Intermountain Healing Hearts. It was important to us to pay it forward somehow.”

Now the Osborns have decided to honor the five daughters they lost within 11 months an additional way: They started the Shanna K. Osborn Foundation to award $ 500 educational scholarships every year to college students who have survived heart defects.

“We wanted our daughters to go to college, so this is a way for us to follow some other young people through their journey and support them, even though we don’t have our little girls,” Jason tells PEOPLE. “It’s a way to keep them in our lives and keep their memories alive, and bring smiles instead of pain.”

The Osborns, who met when they were attending college at Brigham Young University-Idaho, dreamed of having a large family after they married in 2010. Then, shortly after their son was born in 2013, Clarissa developed brain tumors that required radiation treatment and affected her ability to conceive naturally again.

Through IUI (intrauterine insemination) treatment, Clarissa was soon pregnant with Shanna and discovered at her 20-week ultrasound that her daughter didn’t have pulmonary and aortic arteries. “We were told she would require open heart surgery a few days after she was born,” she tells PEOPLE.

Born four months later on April 17, 2016, Shanna spent a month in the hospital after surgery, then the Osborns took her home to meet her older brother.

“Carter got to love on her and was thrilled to have a little sister,” says Clarissa. “Things were going well. Then one Sunday morning, we awoke to a cry we had never heard before.”

She and Jason ran to check on Shanna, who felt cold to the touch. Minutes later, the infant stopped breathing, so Jason performed CPR until paramedics arrived to race her to the hospital. “They tried and tried to resuscitate her,” says Clarissa, “but it was too late.”

To endure four times the sorrow with the deaths of the quads was numbing, she says, with her and Jason waking up daily to “raw hearts and pain.”

Overwhelming support from family, friends and strangers who learned about their plight on a Facebook page they’d started to remember their daughters, “helped pull us through and made us realize we still had a lot of living to do,” Jason tells PEOPLE.

“There are tough nights when we wish we still had our five little girls,” he says, “so it’s therapeutic to talk about them and remember the brief time they were with us and felt our love. Remembering that has been very healing.”

Couple Celebrates The Arrival Of Their Baby Girl With The Sweetest Shoot

You don’t need to have a baby on the way to do one of those trendy “gender reveal” photo shoots.

Missouri couple Kennedy Sartwell and her boyfriend of five years Jake Terry decided to celebrate the arrival of their pup Raven in April with a super cute photo shoot inspired by the ones moms- and dads-to-be often do to announce the sex of their babies.

The couple filled a box with pink balloons to introduce their baby girl, and then snapped some pics with the most photogenic little face you ever did see.

“I’ve been looking for a puppy for quite a while and I’ve been wanting some way to announce it to the world,” Kennedy told ABC News. “Mom and I were coming up with ideas and thought of a [gender] reveal.”

Initially, the photos were just supposed to be just for the couple’s friends and family to enjoy. But after Kennedy’s mom, Cristy Sartwell of Infinite Smiles Photography, posted them on Facebook, they went viral with more than 100,000 likes and 160,000 shares.

Kennedy told Inside Edition that Raven, a Labrador-German shepherd mix, got a little fussy while getting her picture taken and kept getting distracted by dandelions.

“We had to chase her for the entire photo shoot,” she said.

But the fur-tastic photos made it all worthwhile:

Terrifying Tornado Gives Couple A Proposal Story They’ll Never Forget

A storm chaser in Texas used a terrifying tornado as the perfect backdrop to a proposal.

Alex Bartholomew popped the question to girlfriend Britney Fox Cayton near McLean on Tuesday, as a twister struck the ground about a mile away. Fortunately, she said yes.

Bartholomew shared photographs on Facebook of the couple’s epic engagement, with the tornado visible in the background. They are now going viral:

”I was completely overjoyed when he asked me and could not help having tears in my eyes,” Cayton told HuffPost on Thursday. “I almost forgot about the tornado behind us because all I could see was him and how happy I felt in that moment.”

The two 25-year-olds have been together for just over 18 months. “He’s a storm chaser but I’ve been fascinated by it since we started dating,” Cayton said. “He’s been taking me out with him every chance we’ve had since.”

Bartholomew wrote on Facebook that he was “elated,” “ecstatic” and “overjoyed” at Cayton’s answer. “I seriously couldn’t ask for a better life and I can’t wait to spend it with her by my side,” he added.

The Tornado Intercept page on Facebook also shared footage of the memorable proposal online:

This Power Couple Got Married In The Middle Of A Marathon

Running a marathon is a major commitment. One couple took that notion to the next level

Anthony Johnson and James Makokis veered off course during the Vancouver Marathon on May 6 for the best reason: to get married in front of friends, family and lucky marathon spectators.

The couple, who wed around mile 20, had been looking for fun wedding options when the idea struck Makokis, Runner’s World. Both were training for separate races when they decided to use the running event as their wedding venue.

“We kind of started seeing marathon training as a metaphor for a relationship in terms of you have to put in the work and you have to have a good attitude,” Johnson told Runners World. “So we thought it would be a great way to celebrate our union by getting married.”

In honor of the occasion, the pair dressed up in tuxedo T-shirts that read “We said ‘I Do’ at 32 km” and put on jackets for the 30-minute ceremony, according to Runner’s World.

Long distance physical activity appear to be a theme in the couple’s relationship. As Johnson explained to The Cut, a marathon of sorts marked the beginning of the couple’s relationship, too. “[Makokis] visited me in New York for my 30th birthday where we biked the entire city and had one of those only in New York romantic kind of days,” he said. “That’s the day that really started our relationship.”

Their wedding comes a month after a woman named Jackie Scully got married right before the London Marathon and raced in her wedding dress as she recovered from cancer.

Sounds like the most rewarding way possible to multitask.

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough For This Couple Who Wed On Mount Everest

These newlyweds wanted to take their love to new heights ― literally.

California couple James Sissom, 35, and Ashley Schmieder, 32, tied the knot at the end of March in the most unlikely of places. The pair got married at Everest Base Camp after spending three weeks hiking to get there.

“After much deliberation, we decided a traditional wedding was not the right fit for us,” Schmieder told the Daily Mail. “As much as we would have loved to share our special day with our family and friends, we were both drawn to the idea of eloping during an incredible vacation.”

There are two Everest Base Camps on opposite sides of Mount Everest. South Base Camp in Nepal, where the pair tied the knot, is located at an altitude of 17,500 feet. North Base Camp in Tibet is located at an altitude of nearly 17,000 feet. Hikers position themselves at base camps because it’s safer than the harsher conditions on Mt. Everest above.

Despite the unlikely venue, Sissom and Schmieder did not shirk the traditional wedding wardrobe. Sissom wore a suit and Schmieder wore a gorgeous wedding dress.

The wondrous day was documented by adventure wedding photographer Charleton Churchill.

Churchill detailed the trek in a blog post on his website. He wrote: “It started snowing hard a few days into the journey. According to our Sherpa guide, it dumped more snow on us than it had all winter. The temperatures ranged from -8 degrees to 10 degrees Fahrenheit from 14,000 ft. camp and above, so your hands would quickly freeze if left out of the gloves, like when I tried to film and take photos.”

“James and Ashley married in the -5 degrees to 5 degrees Fahrenheit range, and in her wedding dress. We especially had to keep her warm, on top of keeping warm, downing soup, food, drinking hot liquids, and moving, all vital.”

Despite the hardships, the crew made the wedding magic happen.

“When we arrived to base camp, we were told we have 1hr and 30 minutes to eat, get married, pack up, and get on a helicopter. So, we ate, drank, and got married in an hour. James and Ashley exchanged vows at Mt. Everest Base camp right in front of the famous Khumbu ice-fall where people use ladders to maneuver over crevasses, and with the beautifully carved Nuptse Face in the backdrop. Their epic wedding was surrounded by all these famous mountains. It was beautiful, short, and we captured a few photos before packing and getting ready to leave,” Churchill wrote in his post.

Photographs of the nuptials do not disappoint. See more beautiful pics from the wedding below:

This Interfaith Couple Refuses To Let Their Parents Keep Them Apart

Two years into dating, Allie and Mat say they have no qualms about being in an interfaith relationship. Their parents, on the hand, are a different story.

In a new video from The Skin Deep documentary series, the couple discuss their religions ― Allie practices Judaism and Mat is a Catholic ― and how their families have suggested their relationship will end in heartache.

“My dad was just like, ‘Oh, her family’s not going to like you just because you’re Catholic and she’s Jewish,’” Mat says. “But I don’t really date you for your family.”

Allie, though, admits that she initially worried that their parents were onto something.

“I remember being so terrified that, what if they’re correct? What if I’m fighting and it’s not going to work?” Allie admits.

Interestingly enough, when Mat asks Allie to share when she feels closest to him, she says it’s when their families meddle.

“It doesn’t matter with all the battles,” she says. “You’re my best friend.”

Watch the clip above to hear more of the couple’s story, including how they intend to raise their future kids in both religions.

Austin Couple Turns Their Love of Ice Cream Into Sweet Success: ‘We Know How Happy It Makes People’

Ice cream has always played a sweet role in Chad Palmatier and Anthony Sobotik’s relationship.

In March 2005, when Chad, 43, introduced his then-new boyfriend Anthony, 35, to his family in Lancaster, Pa., the first thing they all did was head to their favorite ice cream corner shop to celebrate. And Sobotik, a self-taught chef, couldn’t get enough of the homemade treat.

“I was fascinated that they were using local ingredients and it was a family-run shop,” he tells PEOPLE.

Three years later, during a visit to Sobotik’s family home in Austin, the pair wanted to go out for ice cream again — but found only chain shops nearby. “And I was like, ‘Why isn’t anyone opening a shop here that uses local milk and cream and all the ingredients we have in Austin?’ ” recalls Sobotik.

So they did. In 2010, the couple sold their home in Ohio, moved to Austin, Texas, and opened Lock Honest Ice Creams with a mandate to use only wholesome ingredients from local farmers. “We want to support our local dairies and farmers,” Sobotik says. “That’s really important to us.”

With Sobotik dreaming up inventive flavors (Cilantro Lime, Texas Sheet Cake and Dewberry Corn Cobler), and Palmatier, a former store designer for Victoria’s Secret, focusing on branding, they’ve learned that starting a business with your partner can take a toll.

“The first year was so stressful,” says Palmatier. “Creating something together is all-consuming, and we were both just exhausted. But we’ve weathered every storm, it’s made us stronger as a couple.”

Three stores later (and a fourth opening this spring), it all comes back to the simple art of scooping. “We make a product that brings joy to people,” says Sobotik. “We know how happy it makes people.” And, of course, themselves. Adds Palmatier, “Anthony will still polish off a pint every now and then!”

This Couple Got Married On A Sandbar In The Middle Of The Caribbean Sea

Bride Susana Zamos and her groom Jovany had dreamed of getting married in the middle of the ocean, but their original wedding planners promptly shot down the idea.

“We had a wedding planner who told us, ‘No, you can’t get married in the ocean, it’s far too complicated,’” the bride said in the video above. “So I said, okay, he’s right. We’ll just get married on the beach like everyone else and that’ll be it.”

But photographer Sol Tamargo and her team at Del Sol Photography were committed to making it happen. In November 2016, Susana and Jovany’s dream became a reality when they, along with 100 of their guests, were boated to the El Cielo sandbar in Cozumel, Mexico for the wedding ceremony. The photos are nothing short of breathtaking.

“I have always loved the water,” the bride said in a blog post on the Del Sol Photography website. “I’m a scuba diver and was fortunate enough to grow up with a pool in the backyard and the sea not far away. My happiest days were always in the water.”

Holding a wedding ceremony in the middle of the Caribbean Sea was a challenge that involved a lot of logistical planning and the proper camera equipment. But the end result made it all worth it.

“I was shooting from the boat, then I jumped into the water wearing a snorkel, mask and wetsuit and mermaid cap in the middle of a wedding!” the photographer said. “When do you ever get to do something like that?”

Below, more photos from the couple’s beautiful big day:

Ashley and JP Up in Flames? See How the Bachelorette Couple Confronts Issues Wrecking Their Relationship

Ashley and J.P. Rosenbaum aren’t necessarily known for having fiery marital spats, but that could soon change.

In an exclusive sneak peek at Friday’s Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars, the Bachelorette couple participates in a therapeutic exercise, acknowledging their anxieties, weaknesses and personal roadblocks, in order to move toward accepting their flaws.

Ashley admits she struggles with social anxiety and becoming overly emotional. And while J.P. owns that he doesn’t understand her neuroses, he also confesses to being frustrated that he’s “not made a priority.”

He acknowledges in a separate interview with Ashley that, “In the last year and a half ever since we had our son, it’s been all about him, but we can’t forget about us as a couple.”

After airing their relationship grievances, which are written on papers, the couple symbolically sets them all aflame so they can set themselves free once and for all.

J.P. met Ashley (née Hebert) and won her heart on The Bachelorette in 2011. They married in December 2012 and had their first child, Fordham Rhys, on Sept. 30, 2014. This past November, they welcomed daughter Essex Reese, and Rosenbaum tweeted at the time that little Essie “Already has me wrapped around her little finger. I’m in trouble!”

7 Resolutions Every Married Couple Should Make Together

For BRIDES, by Elizabeth Mitchell.

New year, new marriage. Well, sort of. Whether you just got hitched in 2016 or are coming up on your 10-year anniversary, it’s never too early (or too late) to start working on your relationship and building toward a healthier, happier future together. But exactly what goals should you set, and more importantly, how in the world will you actually get yourselves to stick to them? That, couples, is the question.

According to research from the Journal of Clinical Psychology, approximately 8 percent (yep you read that right) of Americans actually make good on their New Year’s resolutions, which, admittedly, doesn’t look so promising. The biggest problem, however, is the goals themselves. Instead of thinking big (i.e. we’ll do spinning together five times a week), in reality it’s best to start small (i.e. we’ll do one spinning class a week) and work your way up from there.

You’ll also want to get much more specific with your resolutions, as opposed to keeping them very vague and general. For example, don’t just vow to be more affectionate in 2017; find measurable ways you can achieve this goal, like touching each other every time you watch TV, and make that your New Year’s mission. See, easy right? And definitely not nearly as overwhelming as just trying to get in more physical touch.

From learning his “love language” to playing the appreciation game, we’ve put together 18 New Year’s marriage resolutions to get the love flowing and the bonds growing in 2017. Remember: you can tailor any and all of these to make them reachable and achievable for your own relationship.

See More: The 50 Most Beautiful Wedding Cakes Ever

1. Plan a weekly (or bi-weekly) date night.

Even if it’s at home once in awhile, commit to a weekly (or bi-weekly) date night to reconnect and keep the romance alive in your relationship, suggests psychologist and relationship expert Paulette Kouffman Sherman, author of Dating from the Inside Out.

2. Practice more positive talk.

Vow to say five positive things for every negative remark toward your spouse, recommends Sherman. Not only will this help nip the negativity in the bud, but it will also build both of you up and encourage you to focus on the good in each other — as opposed to dwelling on the not so good.

3. Play the appreciation game.

Every evening at dinner, practice telling your partner one thing you appreciate about him and have him do the same for you. It can be something specific like how he helped you solve a dilemma that day or more general like the fact that he works his booty off to support you and the fam! Switch it up nightly, and let the love flow.

4. Actively seduce each other.

And vow to make it a priority at least once a month (if not more), advises NY Times Bestselling author of 101 Nights of Great Sex, Laura Corn.

“Dream up something unique to do together in the bedroom, make a plan at least a week out and let your partner know something special is coming.” Drop hints along the way (sexting works well!) until the big, unforgettable night. “The elements of surprise and anticipation that this helps create are critical to a lasting, powerful sexual relationship.”

5. Fight fair.

According to marriage and family therapist Alicia Taverner, LMFT, owner of Rancho Counseling, the best New Year’s resolution for couples is to fight fair.

“This means refraining from things like name calling, criticism, attacking personality or character traits and bringing up past issues into a current fight. You want to fight about the topic at hand and discuss it until you feel there is resolution or an agreement to disagree.”

Here’s how she recommends structuring the gripe: “I’m upset/angry/sad about ____. In the future I’d like it if you could ____.”

6. Touch each other every time you watch TV.

One thing Crystal Rice, owner of Insieme Consulting, finds that couples in trouble have stopped being affectionate in non-sexual ways. So vow to do better!

“By simply sitting next to your partner on the couch, you increase the probability of affection, a commodity often seen far too little in long-term relationships,” she says.

7. Stop lying about the little things.

Like looking good in a sweater that’s gotten too small! Yep, you heard us right.

When we lie about the little things, it gets easier and easier to lie about the bigger stuff, explains Rice. “And then one day you wake up and realize you’ve been lying about feelings or thoughts or concerns that should have been brought to light many months or years earlier. You don’t have to be a rat about it. You can say, ‘I like you better in the blue sweater.’”

Whatever you do, just don’t lie.

Couple Married 63 Years Dies Hours Apart: ‘I Know They Are Together’

After 63 years of marriage, Dolores and Trent Winstead of Nashville, Tennessee just couldn’t bear to be apart.

On Dec. 9 at around 9 p.m., Dolores, 83, died after suffering a brain aneurysm; the following afternoon at 4 p.m., Trent, 88, died after his heart had weakened from kidney failure.

“I know they are together and happy for eternity, and that is a comfort to me,” the couple’s daughter Sheryl Winstead told Today. “But I never in a million years dreamed I would walk out of the hospital without either one of them.”

The pair would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in January.

When Trent was hospitalized at St. Thomas West earlier this month for kidney failure, Dolores was seemingly in good health. One day at the hospital, she appeared to have fallen asleep in a chair at Trent’s bedside after complaining of a bad headache. It wasn’t until Sheryl tried to wake her up and couldn’t that the family realized something was wrong. Nurses tried to revive Dolores but her brain activity was gone after the aneurysm, according to the Washington Post. They hooked her up to a ventilator and eventually moved her and Trent into the same room.

For their final hours together, the couple held hands as they laid in beds side by side.

The couple has two kids, three grandkids and eight great-grandkids. Their son Eddie was the one who told Trent that Dolores had died.

“I had to lean down next to him, and just kind of tell him, ‘Mom has passed,’” Eddie told ABC affiliate WKRN. “When that happened, it was kind of like his whole spirit just changed.”

He continued, “I told him, I said, ‘Dad, if you want to go be with Mom, that’s quite alright with Sheryl and I.’”

Losing both Trent and Dolores in such a short span of time was undoubtedly difficult for the family, but knowing the couple didn’t have to live long without one another brought them some comfort.

“It’s like God made their travel arrangements and they went together,” Sheryl told WKRN. “It’s just really sweet.”

Watch the video above for more on their story.

Wedded Couple Stuck In Traffic Take First Dance On Highway

The road to love isn’t always smooth, as Jeff and Rebecca Payne found out this week.

The couple were married in Dayton, Ohio, Saturday night, only to get stuck in a huge traffic jam on the way to their reception.

The bride and groom ― and everyone else ― were stalled for an hour before another motorist spotted the bride’s wedding dress and suggested they do their first dance right there on U.S. Route 35, according to local station WLWT.

“It was actually some strangers from Kansas,” the couple’s videographer, Levi Curby, told CNN. “They noticed the wedding dress and asked what (the newlyweds) would be doing if they weren’t stuck in traffic.”

The motorists suggested the couple take that first dance then and there.

Although “Life Is A Highway” may have been apropos, the couple instead danced to Alison Krauss’ “When You Say Nothing At All,” which one of the bystanders found on Spotify.

Others watched from their vehicles while Curby filmed the whole thing, according to “Inside Edition.”

“I think there were some tears at first, but no meltdowns,” Curby told “Inside Edition.” “They were two sports. They handled the whole thing so well. They did great. The dance turned it into a party.”

The couple were finally rescued from their gridlocked reception when a friend of the groom’s father pulled up in the opposite lane, so the Paynes could hop over a guardrail, get into the car and start the rest of their life.

Here’s a video of the rescue:

The Paynes are now reportedly vacationing in an undisclosed location. Hopefully, it has little or no traffic.

Donald And Melania Trump: The Nation’s First Live Apart Together Couple

The news that Melania Trump will live apart from her husband, President-elect Donald Trump for a few months until their son Barron, 10, finished school, was shocking to many people.

While it may seem odd that a married couple doesn’t live together, the Trumps’ decision to live apart is actually part of a growing trend  –  living apart together couples, also known as LATs, or apartners.

About one-third of U.S. adults who aren’t married or cohabiting are in LAT relationships. While some are young people in long-distance relation ships because of schooling or careers, or couples who want to live together but can’t for various reasons (such as military families), many include women like me  –  divorced, middle-aged empty-nesters who want nothing that resembles the married life we knew. In fact, more older divorced and widowed women are choosing live apart together relationships so they can enjoy their romantic relationships without the complications, caretaking and complacency of living together.

But a good portion are married, like the Trumps – who will be the highest-profile example of this demographic trend. Still, the number of couples who are “married, spouse absent,” according to the United States census, is a lot less than the numbers of couples living together – just a little more than 3 percent of the population.

How will they make it work? Does it help or hinder a relationship? What are the benefits? What about the kids?

Upsides of living apart

In researching LATs/apartners for The New I Do: Reshaping Marriage for Skeptics, Realists and Rebels  –  which offers a living apart together model as one of many marital options couples can chose from to individualize their marriage  –  I discovered that LATs/apartners feel more committed and less trapped than live-in couples. When you live apart, each person has to actively work on commitment and trust; it’s not taken for granted. Nor is sex – especially since so many couples are dealing with what they consider sexless marriages.

I also learned that many people who are in LAT relationships, or were in them for a while, say that they learned valuable relationship skills, such as trust, patience and better communication. Many also got better at time management, independence, and discovering intimacy that wasn’t just about sex and touch.

Those are the kind of skills can lead to a more satisfying relationship, and relationship satisfaction can make couples feel more committed to each other. Couples who feel committed to each other are motivated to show it; they act in ways that their partner can clearly experience as loving. And they don’t need to be under the same roof to act loving.

Isn’t that exactly what people want in a romantic relationship?

Living apart — good for women?

“It’s of particular interest to women, who often get the short end of the stick in marriage and cohabitation. They still end up doing most of the caretaking and household chores, even if they work full time,” says Montreal filmmaker Sharon Hyman, who is working on a documentary called Apartners: Living Happily Ever Apart that I will be a part of as well as apartners from around the world.

“Couples, especially women, who are apartners relish the fact that to have time and space apart, and believe it may just be the secret ingredient to keeping love alive and passions growing. When you remove the petty, annoying parts out of a relationship, like laundry on the floor or who’s spending too much on what, then you are left with the good stuff – the chance to truly be intimate and present with your partner. Many believe that it actually makes them a better spouse.”

Hyman has been an apartner for almost two decades and wouldn’t have it any other way, although she acknowledges it may not be right for everyone.

“I am not an advocate for couples living apart. What I am an advocate for is having options. I just do not believe that there is only one way to love, no one-sized-fits-all, cookie-cutter way to have a relationship,” Hyman writes in Psychology Today. “It is all about what works best for you and your mate.”

What about the kids?
Of course, living apart together isn’t that hard if you don’t have kids or your kids are grown and out of the house; it’s an entirely different thing if you’re trying to raise a child or children together. Barron’s schooling is supposedly why the Trumps made the decision to live apart for a while. Children add complications to the arrangement, but they aren’t insurmountable.

The Trumps will have to come up with a plan that addresses how Donald will maintain meaningful connection with Barron and have everyone feel like they’re part of one family. Technology makes that awfully easy nowadays.

Then they’ll just need to keep communicating. Trump will want to be sure to let Barron know when he’ll be home again, and assure him that they will have plenty of one-on-one time together, as well as family time, before he heads back to Washington.

In most cases, the person living apart from the family home would want to be sensitive to the spouse at home with the kids; you want to avoid the “super-parent” syndrome – making one person responsible for all the caretaking – as much as you can. Since that’s the arrangement the Trumps already have – and let’s face it, they have lots of paid help, too – this won’t be an issue for them.

A POTUS who looks like us

Say what you will about the Trumps, but here’s an upside to their planned arrangement: couples about to wed or even long-term couples who feel stuck in their marriage may look at the marital arrangement of the future POTUS and FLOTUS and decide that they, too, would like to become apartners. Since fewer of us in America are in traditional nuclear families, why wouldn’t we want a president who reflects who we actually are — beyond just a man of color like President Obama or a woman like presidential-hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Every couple is free to individualize their marriage so that it works for them, no one else. And that’s exactly what the Trumps, married almost 12 years, plan to do.

Unfortunately the Trumps’ arrangement will cost U.S. taxpayers money – an unknown amount right now, unless they plan to fund their lifestyle on their own, which is highly doubtful. There may be many things to not like about Trump whether you voted for him or not, but choosing an alternative marital model shouldn’t be one of them.

Jon Hamm And Jennifer Westfeldt Split After 18 Years As A Couple

You may have already lost count of how many celebrity couples have broken up this summer, but here’s one more right as Labor Day brings an unofficial close to the season: Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt have split after 18 years as partners, according to a statement they released Monday to multiple outlets.

“With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history. We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward,” the couple said.

People Magazine claims that the last time the two attended a public event was at the “Wet Hot American Summer” Netflix premiere’s after-party in July.

The two released a statement back in April denying rumors they had broken up.

The month before, Hamm completed a rehab stint for alcohol and noted Westfeldt had supported him during his struggle.

Couple Surprises Wedding Guests With An Epic One-Take Music Video

Newlyweds Robert and Teresa Ly know how to have a good time.

That couldn’t have been more evident at their August 22 wedding in Maitland, Florida. During the reception, the couple shot a surprise music video that included dancing and lip-syncing along with their 250 guests. Oh, and they filmed the whole thing in a single take.

Teresa told The Huffington Post that she and Robert considered doing a dance with just the bridal party, but decided against it because they wanted to include as many of their family and friends as possible.

“Robert and I stand for fun in our business and personal life so when it came time to plan our wedding, we wanted it to be fun for not only ourselves, but ultimately all our guests,” she said.

Under each table at the reception was an envelope that told guests what their role in the video would be.

“Each person in our bridal party was in charge of a song/section,” the bride told HuffPost. “They helped put our guests into position and briefed them for about 10 minutes. They really didn’t know what was about to happen.”

The music medley kicks off with Frozen’s “Love Is An Open Door,” followed by other jams including Silentò’s “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),” T. Swift’s “Shake It Off,” Maroon 5’s “Sugar” and a sweet finale to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”

“Our guests had a blast!” the bride said. “Before the wedding reception, we had already made the claim that it was going to be epic and I think we did a pretty good job at delivering on our promise.”

Watch the awesomeness above.

Couple Who Helped Win Marriage Equality Finally Ties The Knot

Two women who played an integral role in the Supreme Court’s ruling to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide have finally tied the knot, and Now This News has compiled a beautiful video documenting the occasion.

Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer, a Michigan couple who became plaintiffs in the recent historic legal battle for same-sex marriage rights, married one another in front of approximately 300 friends and family members last week, according to Detroit Free Press.

The pair, who have four kids, initially only pursued a legal case about adoption rights, since Michigan’s adoption code doesn’t allow for joint or second-parent adoption. However, Rowse and DeBoer became one of the couples to join other plaintiffs from Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky in a combined marriage equality case known as Obergefell v. Hodges, wherein the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay couples, thereby guaranteeing marriage equality across the nation.

“Little did I know that you would bring me four beautiful kids… and drag me into the Supreme Court,” DeBoer told Rowse during her vows. “I am honored to soon be your legal wife… You are my best friend. I promise to love you forever. I can’t imagine my life without you and without our kids. I promise to stand by you forever.”

Congrats, Jayne and April!

Tired Of Baby Questions, This Couple Took Pics With Their Pup Instead

Australian couple Matt Kay and Abby Lee were tired of people asking them when they were going to have kids.

With the the help of their photographer friend Elisha Collins of Elisha Minette Photography, the couple of two years came up with the idea of of doing a newborn-style photo shoot with their canine bundle of joy instead.

“Our families joke around about when are we having kids,” Abby told The Huffington Post. “We thought the newborn shoot would be a humorous response.”

“We came up with the idea when we were on the long drive home from picking Humphrey up from the groodle (golden retriever-poodle mix) breeder,” Elisha told HuffPost. “Abby and I have the craziest sense of humor and we feed off of each other with ideas.”

The pictures of the impossibly photogenic pup and his fur parents began to go viral after Elisha posted them to her Facebook page earlier this week.

“We did this shoot just for a little bit of humor between ourselves and our closest family and friends that have the same sense of humor as us,” she said. “We did not expect this to get as big as it has.”

Elisha stressed that the photo session was not intended to make fun of new parents or those who enjoying sharing about their kids on social media.

“This was just clean, simple Sunday afternoon fun,” she added.

How to Survive Your First Trip as a Couple

By John Agnew for the Orbitz Travel Blog
This article originally appeared on HotelClub.com

Ernest Hemingway said, “Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.” While you might not be in ‘L word’ territory just yet, a trip with your significant other is one that can either make or break your blossoming romance. Here are 10 tips to help survive your first trip traveling as a couple, to ensure your relationship remains intact all the way from take-off to touching back down on home soil.

Related: These 7 all-inclusive resorts are some of the Caribbean’s most romantic.

1. Avoid ‘hangry’ at all costs

When traveling, hunger induced rage or sulking is the most avoidable of potentially relationship-ending squabbles. Learn each other’s hunger warning signs, pack snacks if you’re doing a full day’s trekking around, and plan regular food stops. Adding cool restaurants and cafes into your travel itinerary is a great way to navigate a city.

HC_Jul_couple-travel_planning

2. Planner vs. passive

Is your partner an avid planner while you prefer madcap spontaneity? Risky.
Are you both hardcore organizers resistant to input from others? Potentially damning.

It’s important to find a balance in who plans what (unless you’re fortunate enough to be perfectly in simpatico) so you can hit an agreeable middle-ground between your individual interests while taking turns donning the captain’s hat.

3. Space is essential

While the idea of traveling with your better half might invoke mental images of long sunset walks or passionate embraces in front of famous landmarks, the reality is that spending countless days in the company of a single person can drive even the most loved-up individual to the brink of insanity.

Throw some “me time” into your itinerary – be it a day of solo exploring or simply booking accommodation with separate living and sleeping quarters so you’re not on top of each other at all times – to avoid potential for personal space infractions. Plus, it’s fun to reunite with your loved one after a day away from each other, and help to fan the flames of romance throughout your trip.

4. Sort your budget before you bon voyage

Roughly map out the spending budget for daily expenses like food, transport, admission prices and so on, and how you’ll be paying throughout the trip. A good way to avoid any finance-related arguments down the track is just split everything down the middle. However, when it comes to shopping for personal souvenirs (art, clothing, fine wine, etc) it’s every man or woman for his or herself. You can always hide the receipts…

5. This time, it’s personal

From stomach bugs to seismic episodes of travel rage, prepare to see your partner at their absolute worst when traveling abroad. You might be known for having Zen levels of patience, but a 14-hour flight followed by a lengthy stint in the customs line only to be met with a “booking issue” at your hotel would make even Gandhi want to throw a hissy fit. Be patient and don’t sweat the small stuff, sweaty.

HC_Jul_couple-travel_testing

6. If you don’t walk at the same pace as your partner, your relationship is doomed.

Maybe opt for a cycling tour. Or a cruise.

7. Mapping out trouble

Too many cooks spoil the broth, and too many map-readers has the potential to catastrophically destroy your trip. Take turns at being the guide to avoid quibbles at crossroads – and if one of you is a regular Christopher Columbus behind the compass, while the other can barely navigate their way out of the hotel lobby, it’s best to save face and leave the map-managing to the former.

HC_Jul_couple-travel_map

8. Enhance the romance

It’s exciting to see how far you can stretch your money on an overseas trip (the breakfast buffet doubles as a DIY sandwich-making station for lunch? Somebody pass the cling wrap!), but it pays to fork out a little extra cash on a classy hotel stay or restaurant a few times during your journey to keep the romance flowing.

9. Cabin failure

One of the hardest parts of the journey happens before you even reach your destination. Yes, the flying portion of your trip is where you’ll be physically closest with your partner (and about 150 complete strangers) for the longest period of time – so remember, you don’t necessarily have to sit next to each other on the plane, and it’s okay to both request an aisle seat when flying non-stop from LA to Australia. Sometimes comfort and armrest space is more important for your mutual sanity and tolerance levels.

HC_Jul_couple-travel_plane

10. Test the waters

Sure, your love for each other is strong and true – but the trials and tribulations of travel can test even the most solidified relationships. Before you book that three month-long overseas jaunt with your honey, try a weekend away to see if you’re a good travel fit and go from there.

Oregon Bakery Must Pay For Refusing To Make Wedding Cake For Lesbian Couple

The owners of an Oregon bakery must pay $ 135,000 in damages for refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, a state official ruled on Thursday.

Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian agreed with a preliminary ruling that Sweet Cakes by Melissa illegally discriminated against a Portland couple in 2013 by turning down their request based on their sexual orientation, The Oregonian reported.

A judge had ordered owners Aaron and Melissa Klein to pay $ 75,000 in damages to Rachel Bowman-Crye and another $ 60,000 to her wife, Laurel Bowman-Cryer.

The Kleins had argued it was against their Christians beliefs to participate in a same-sex marriage. Supporters raised money for them earlier this year after an administrative law judge imposed the penalty.

The Bowman-Cryers, through their attorney Paul Thompson, said in a statement they were glad Avakian sent “a clear message that discrimination will simply not be tolerated in our state.”

“This has been a terrible ordeal for our entire family. We never imagined finding ourselves caught up in a fight for social justice,” they said.

“We endured daily, hateful attacks on social media, received death threats and feared for our family’s safety, yet our goal remained steadfast. We were determined to ensure that this kind of blatant discrimination never happened to another couple, another family, another Oregonian,” the statement continued. “Everyone deserves to be treated as an equal member of society.”

An email to HuffPost, the bakery said the decision was wrong, adding, “Americans should tolerate diverse opinions, not use the government to punish fellow citizens with different views. This case has become a poster for an overpowered elected official using his position to root out thought and speech with which he personally disagrees.”

The owners vowed in a Facebook post to appeal the decision:

“The final ruling has been made today. We have been charged with $ 135,000 in emotional damages, But also now Aaron has been charged with advertising. (Basically talking about not wanting to participate in a same-sex wedding) This effectively strips us of all our first amendment rights. According to the state of Oregon we neither have freedom of religion or freedom of speech. We will NOT give up this fight, and we will NOT be silenced. We stand for God’s truth, God’s word and freedom for ALL americans. We are here to obey God not man, and we will not conform to this world. If we were to lose everything it would be totally worth it for our Lord who gave his one and only son, Jesus, for us! God will win this fight.

The Sweet Cakes website features quotations from Biblical passages, such as, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” from the book of Proverbs. It also explicitly states the bakery is interested in baking for weddings between a man and a woman.

“We here at Sweet Cakes strongly believe that when a man and woman come together to be joined as one, it is truly one of the most special days of their lives,” the homepage said. “We feel truely [sic] honored when we are chosen to do the cake for your special day.”

They Were Just Trying To Protect Their Kids, But This Couple Won Marriage Equality

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse are one of the same-sex couples behind the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that all 50 states must allow gay marriage. But the two Michigan nurses barely thought about what they’re going to do for their own wedding.

“I do believe we have a wedding to plan and some kids to adopt,” DeBoer said, after learning of their victory Friday.

She and Rowse were at a live-streamed gathering in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with their lawyers and supporters, celebrating as other couples across the state headed to county clerks’ offices to obtain marriage licenses.

The two women, who started their legal battle in 2011, ultimately joined plaintiffs from Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky in the combined case, now known as Obergefell v. Hodges, that the Supreme Court heard. Other couples were fighting to have their home states recognize marriages performed elsewhere. DeBoer and Rowse, however, were originally seeking changes to state adoption laws.

Four years ago, the couple met attorney Dana Nessel while trying to prepare wills that would protect their children. Michigan law doesn’t allow adoption by two same-sex parents, so each of DeBoer and Rowse’s four kids has only one legally recognized parent. Each woman has adopted two of their four children, who are all age 6 or younger.

When they filed their lawsuit, U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman encouraged them to expand the case to challenge the constitutionality of Michigan’s gay marriage ban. They did, and he ruled in their favor in 2014. Friedman, who had been appointed by President Ronald Reagan, reportedly cried as he told the Detroit News on Friday that he had been praying for the Supreme Court’s decision.

“We never could have in a million years anticipated that this case … would become a marriage case at all, let alone the seminal marriage case,” Nessel said.

The Supreme Court’s majority opinion notes that protecting children is a crucial element of the case for same-sex marriage. “April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse now ask whether Michigan may continue to deny them the certainty and stability all mothers desire to protect their children, and for them and their children the childhood years will pass all too soon,” it says.

Though their kids have always been the primary concern, that’s not to say that DeBoer and Rowse aren’t looking forward to the wedding. So are Ryanne, Rylee, Jacob and Nolan, who have been hearing about marriage for years. Ryanne, 5, is eager to dress up like a princess. Rylee, 2, wants to be the flower girl, though DeBoer jokingly worried that she will throw flowers at the guests.

“To my beautiful children, we did this for you,” DeBoer said.

Polls show that public opinion has shifted in favor of marriage equality since the voters passed Michigan’s same-sex marriage ban in 2004. In a statement Friday, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) urged the state to “focus on the values we share” and “respect the judicial process.”

“Our state government will follow the law and our state agencies will make the necessary changes to ensure that we will fully comply,” Snyder said. “As Michiganders we should move forward positively, embracing our state’s diversity and striving to treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.”

The victory for marriage equality does not end the debate over lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in Michigan, though, where it is still legal to fire someone based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Earlier this month, the governor signed a law that allows publicly funded, faith-based adoption agencies to cite religious beliefs as a reason to deny services to gay couples and others. And last week, a Republican state legislator introduced a bill that would require a member of the clergy to sign off on all marriages — a potential hardship for same-sex couples.

But on Friday, county clerks in Michigan performed gay wedding ceremonies with gusto.

DeBoer and Rowse hope their own wedding will take place before the end of the summer.

Nessel described her clients-turned-friends as “ordinary people who are all at once also extraordinary and who could not have represented this case or this cause with any more dignity — or any more humor, really — than anyone else that I know.”

The attorney not only scored a win for her clients, but also will benefit personally from the Supreme Court’s decision. Speaking Friday, she thanked her two sons for often going without her presence as she fought for other kids and she thanked fiancée Alanna Maguire. Nessel proposed in April, standing on a stepstool outside the court on the afternoon that the justices heard arguments in the marriage case.

“Meeting your future same-sex spouse during your fight for same-sex marriage is kind of the most awesome story ever,” Nessel said.

This Couple Is Traveling The World To Find The Perfect Wedding Destination

In 2011, Alex Pelling and Lisa Gant sold all of their belongings and left their home in Manchester, England. They embarked on a four-year (and counting) journey around the world with plans to hold wedding ceremonies along the way.

“We wanted to meet local people, experience local culture and understand what makes the world tick,” Gant said. “We are crazy romantics and to give us some purpose, we decided to look for somewhere to get married [in each place].”

So far, Pelling and Gant have tied the knot 70 times in roughly 70 different countries, including Argentina, Morocco, Austria, South Africa and Jordan. None of the ceremonies thus far have been legally binding. At the end of their trip (they still have 10 to 15 more countries to visit), they will return to one of the locations with their friends and family and make the marriage official.

“After two years on the road — our initial plan — and 48 weddings, we realized that life is all about the journey, not the destination,” Gant told The Huffington Post. “We learned that our adventure is all about the people, making new friends and being made welcome into homes, lives and even the most sacred traditions.”

The couple live in a camper van to cut down on travel and lodging costs. Their biggest expenses? Fuel, car repairs and visas, they say. Many of the wedding photographers and other vendors they’ve used charge them little or nothing for their services. In exchange, Gant and Pelling recommend their businesses and write about them on their blog 2People1Life.com, where they document their adventures.

“What is amazing to learn is that every culture celebrates the union of two people,” Gant told HuffPost. “Making a commitment to one another is cause for celebration, sometimes a week or more of celebrations in some cultures. It is such an important part of everyone’s lives, literally every person on the planet. Even if [they’re] not the ones getting married, whole communities come together to wish the couple well and rejoice with them.”

Meet The Lovable Couple Who Got Married And Went Viral On The Same Day

A day before their wedding, an emotional video of Kristie Scherrer and Tavis Doucette aging 70 years in six minutes (thanks to makeup and prosthetics) hit the Internet. The collaboration between YouTube channels Cut Video and Field Day quickly became a viral sensation with more than 14 million views.

via Tribune Media

“We realized it was released when we were on our way to our rehearsal,” Scherrer told The Huffington Post. “When we got to the dinner, we told a few of our friends who knew about it that it released and they all admitted that they had seen it. By then the local news had even picked it up. At the wedding everyone had seen it but us. We really wanted to watch it together and there was no time the day of the wedding.”

So 12 hours after their big day, the newlyweds watched the video for the first time at a screening with family and friends. A crew from Field Day was there to capture their tender reactions.

“Like [Kristie] said in the film, we couldn’t be more sure of the person that we’re with,” a misty-eyed Doucette says after viewing the finished product.

Although you don’t get to see or hear much from the couple’s family in the reaction video, Scherrer told HuffPost that their entire family was “deeply moved” by it.

“We don’t live anywhere close to our family and never have as a couple, so I think it showed them a more intimate side of our relationship than they are used to seeing when we visit,” she said. “They laughed and cried and were really proud of us.”

The adorable couple first met at a cafe on their second day of school at Wagner College back in 2006. They were introduced by a mutual friend and stayed close friends until their senior year, when their friendship blossomed into something more serious.

The couple moved from New York City to Los Angeles last year. Scherrer is an account executive at a marketing firm and Doucette is an actor.

“Which means I am a very experienced bar tender,” he joked.

Doucette and Scherrer said that neither of them anticipated the massive and overwhelmingly positive reception to the original video, but feel honored to have been part of the experience.

“Tavis asked if I cared if he submitted us for it and I said sure,” she said. “We went to the audition during my lunch hour and I really didn’t think anything of it. Then we got cast and started to learn more about the project and who was behind it. The director told us we could ‘expect some people to see it.’ But this kind of reaction, the responses and messages we have received, it’s been incredible.”

After Meeting On Twitter, This Couple Is Live-Streaming Their Wedding On Periscope

Bryanna Mazzella and Kyle Harris met three years ago on Twitter. So it’s only fitting that they’re incorporating relatives and loved ones into their upcoming nuptials through Twitter’s very own live-streaming service, Periscope.

“We have a bunch of people in different countries and other states who can’t make it to the wedding, and we thought with all the live-streaming technology out now, it’s just a perfect way to let them be with us on our day,” Harris told HuffPost Live on Wednesday. “I just think it’s a great tool to have.”

Having accumulated an online following, the couple can also use Periscope to invite fans from Twitter and Instagram to witness their vows at no cost.

“Just to have our family and friends from other places to be able to be with us, at least just in spirit and vibe, is amazing for us,” said Mazzella.

Couple Had No Clue A Photog Was Snapping These Sweet Proposal Pics

Thanks to Facebook and what some would call fate, one lucky couple has photos of their picture-perfect proposal.

Andrew Smith grabbed an impromptu carriage ride through Central Park with girlfriend Cali Harrison during a trip to New York City on May 16. On their carriage driver’s recommendation, Smith planned to propose at Bethesda Fountain, but once they arrived, he got nervous about popping the question in front a crowd. As fate would have it, everyone suddenly walked away.

“The second I drop to a knee, this little girl who was not too far from us screams at the top of her lungs,” he told the Huffington Post. “She goes, ‘Oh my god! He’s proposing!'”

All eyes were on the Tampa, Fla.-based couple — as well as photographer Jessica Sharpe’s lens.

central park engagement

Sharpe, who owns Dalton Lane Portrait Co., happened to witness the couple’s engagement while she was waiting for a client at the fountain. She snapped some photos and turned to chat with her fellow photographer. When she looked back to share them with Smith and Harrison, they were gone.

Sharpe posted the photos on her photography company’s Facebook page, asking if anyone knew the couple. More than 100 shares and less than 45 minutes later, a woman Harrison knew from high school recognized her in the photos and tagged her. Sharpe was shocked.

“I am absolutely blown away with the fact that we even found them, not to mention how quickly it all happened,” she told The Huffington Post in an email. “Less than an hour, that’s insane!”

central park engagement

The proposal process didn’t start out so seamless, however. Smith ordered the ring in advance of asking his future father-in-law for his blessing, but it wasn’t delivered on time. Then, Smith landed in the emergency room with the stomach flu, delaying his plans further. Luckily, all the pieces came together in time for the couple’s trip to NYC.

“Everything went so wrong in the beginning, and then it was like the world kind of stood up straight and everything was right in the world for a moment,” he said.

The pair, who who met as students at Georgia Tech in 2008 and started dating three years ago, offered to pay for the photos, but Sharpe refused, saying she was “just in the right place at the right time.”

Harrison called Sharpe their “angel.”

“I think it is just such an awesome testament that social media can be such an amazing thing,” she said.

The happy couple have yet to set a wedding date, but they are thinking about tying the knot in spring 2017.

Watch What Happens When This Young Couple Sees What They Will Look Like In 70 Years

SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue

By Sue Campbell

If you haven’t yet seen the viral video showing a couple in their 20s get transformed by makeup artists to look age 50, 70 and 90, take five minutes to watch it (below). The video will make you think about sterotypes of aging and also about what it means to grow old with a partner.

It centers on Kristie and Tavis, who are to be married in a month. They’ve agreed to this experiement and are eager to share it with their families. “My mom thinks this is the coolest thing ever,” Kristie says. “She said, ‘What a treat for us because we’ll probably be gone when you’re that age, so we’ll get to see what you would maybe look like.”

The makeup artists get to work, and when the couple hits 50, Tavis is delighted by Kristie’s looks. They expect, they say, that they’ll be living a sterotypical kind of life, raising teenagers and joining the PTA. At 70, they turn a bit emotional. “I can’t help but think about what the potential last 50 years would hold,” Tavis says. “To see her look like this makes me think of where we have gone, what would have happened in between.”

To see a young couple ponder time’s passing, believe the years will keep them together and accept one another’s aging faces with love reveals the commitment they feel. It’s sweet and tender to watch.

At 90, they weep. The pair instinctively grasps that there’s deep comfort to be found in long relationships. They talk about what their last words to each other would be. “I would want to make sure he knew how much I love him and how important he’s been to me,” Kristie says. “I’m a better person because of you,” Tavis says.

Watch This Sweet Couple Age 70 Years In Six Minutes

A month before their wedding, engaged couple Kristie Scherrer and Tavis Doucette participated in a fun and surprisingly emotional experiment. Using makeup and prosthetics, the pair was able to get a glimpse of what they’ll look like as they grow old together.

Cut Video collaborated with Field Day on the sweet six-minute video, which shows Kristie and Tavis — currently in their late 20s — as people in their…

“I hope you look like this,” Tavis says. “You look fantastic.”

Seventies:

“To see her look like this makes me just think of where we have gone to be next to each other looking like this,” he says. “What would have happened in between.”

And nineties:

“There’s some strange, comforting feeling seeing him this way,” Kristie says.

A Cut Video employee told BuzzFeed that the makeup artists used the couple’s family photos as a guide to what they might look like at that stage in their life.

According to their wedding website, Kristie and Tavis tied the knot on Friday. The making of the video, filmed roughly a month before the wedding, couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Especially being about to get married and embarking on all that, I couldn’t be more sure that this is what I want,” Kristie says at the end of the video. And with that, our hearts have officially turned to mush.

Kanye West Bought Kim Kardashian ‘A Couple Thousand’ Roses For Mother’s Day

Even though Kim Kardashian is spending Mother’s Day in Brazil, away from husband Kanye West and their 1-year-old daughter, North, the rapper made sure his wife felt appreciated on the special holiday.

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star shared a photo of a room filled with bouquets of white roses to her Instagram account Sunday, writing:

I got to my room in Brazil and my amazing thoughtful husband had the sweetest note with a couple thousand roses covering my entire suite for Mothers Day! I’m so sad I’m so far away on this day but happy we celebrated yesterday! I love you baby & North soooo much!!!

Sweet? Yes. Over the top? Maybe. Surprising? Not really, especially considering what the rapper got for Kardashian on this day last year:

The 34-year-old reality TV star made sure to post tributes to her mother and grandmother to commemorate the occasion. See all the photos below:

This Possible ‘Harry Potter’ Couple Would Ruin Harry Potter’s Childhood Even More

Harry Potter might want to keep away from the latest edition of The Quibbler.

Following a recent Instagram post, the online speculation is that Harry’s dad, James Potter, aka actor Robbie Jarvis, may be dating Luna Lovegood, aka actress Evanna Lynch. And if Harry’s childhood wasn’t ruined before, it definitely is now:

That photo isn’t all, though. Despite the fact that E! wasn’t given conformation from Jarvis’ reps that the two were dating, other cute photos just seem to add to the evidence. Take this one for example:

Trying on hats with @msevylynch. Which one of us looks better? #fancy

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

And check out this one where they apparently took Polyjuice Potion and transformed into owls. Nice try, James and Luna, but we know it’s you:

Owls!

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

So why is this such a big deal? OK, first, let’s skip past the fact that in “Harry Potter,” Luna came in during Ginny’s year and is younger than Harry. Just forget that. But didn’t Harry also take Luna to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party? Now his dad might be taking her out? Oh, and what about Lily Potter, James? What about Lily?

Voldemort has done some pretty messed up things to Harry Potter before, but this might be crossing the line.

That being said, we wish all the happiness in the world to the potential couple because they are just actors and Harry Potter isn’t real. Or that’s what people want you to believe, anyway.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post’s requests for comment.

Couple Married 81 Years: ‘You’re Damn Right’ We’re Still In Love

After 81 years of marriage, Dale and Alice Rockey still haven’t lost their spark.

“You don’t see them together without holding hands,” their son Tom Rockey told Kansas City’s FOX 4 News.

On Saturday, the Rockeys were honored by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a Christian group based in San Bernardino, California, as part of the organization’s 2015 Longest Married Couple Project. The title is based on nominations, so this does not make the pair the indisputable longest-married couple in the country — just the longest-married among the 375 nominees.

The Rockeys — who tied the knot on December 29, 1933 — grew up just a couple blocks from each other in Hemingford, Nebraska. According to the Kansas City Star, their romance began one afternoon before a double date they had planned — but Alice was supposed to be going with another guy and Dale with another girl.

When the other girl was still at work, Dale Rockey pulled up in front of Alice’s house. She was sitting on the front porch.

“He came by and says, ‘You want to go for a ride?’” recalled Alice Rockey. “So we went for a ride, and that was our first date.”

The pair went on to have five sons, 15 grandkids, 28 great-grandkids and six great-great grandchildren.

When asked on Saturday, “Do you still love each other after all this time?”, Dale replied with a laugh, “You’re damn right!”

For more on their love story, watch the video above or head over to the Kansas City Star.

Tiffany Ad Features Gay Couple, Rings In New Year In A Big Way

Tiffany & Co. is engaging new customers.

The venerable jeweler features a gay couple for the first time in an ad, according to Time.

The photogenic men, who are a real couple in New York City, are pictured on a stoop for Tiffany’s “Will You” campaign, next to a picture of two rings.

Will you promise to never stop completing my sentences or singing off-key, which I’m afraid you do often?” the copy reads. “And will you let today be the first sentence of one long story that never, ever ends?”

Tiffany rep Linda Buckley told ELLE in a statement that love stories come “in a variety of forms.” “The Tiffany engagement ring is the first sentence of the story that a couple will write together as they create a life that is deeply intimate and exceptional.”

While it is still noteworthy that an iconic company like Tiffany is using same-sex imagery to advertise, the strategy has become increasingly common as gay marriage gains popularity. Advertisers such as Cheerios, Honey Maid and Ray-Ban have already paved the way.

10 Conversations Every Couple Should Have in the New Year

There are many articles that enumerate the types of conversations every couple needs to have prior to getting married, such as discussing their plans for how to parent, and their perspectives on money and religion. But I believe that there are 10 conversations that every couple needs to have on a regular basis in order to keep their emotional connection alive. They can help you realize what areas of their relationship may need to be worked on, whether this is done with more conversation or even with a couples counselor. In 2015, why not commit to having at least a few of these helpful conversations?

By the way, if you want to know when you would use these questions, a good thing to do is an Emotional Check In, which is a weekly time (yes, put it on your Outlook) that you and your spouse sit together for a a half hour, no more and no less, to discuss only how the relationship is going.  Many couples find this to be useful; it isn’t such a long time that the less emotionally expressive partner is terrified, and it is long enough for both people to feel heard. So try a weekly Emotional Check In, and use some of these questions during it. (Note: If you’re a devoted reader of this blog, you’ll realize that many of these are questions I use in my Functional Couple Fridays interviews.  So I walk the walk.)

we otter ask each other some of these questions We otter ask each other some of these questions

1. What do you love about me?
This question is wonderful to use on a regular basis.  It makes partners feel great to know that there are specific things about them that are valued and appreciated within their relationship.  Talking about this can bring partners back to the honeymoon stage, where all you ever did was talk about what you love about each other (and have sex). This conversation topic pumps out endorphins and makes both partners happy.

2.  What do I do regularly that makes you happy?
Not only does this give you the happiness benefits of having your effort noticed and recognized, but it can also be instructive to learn exactly what does and doesn’t resonate emotionally with your partner.  For example, if you’re busting your butt to get a delicious dinner on the table every night for your husband, but he never mentions this as something that makes him happy, maybe you can relax and order take out sometimes.  This can also lead into a productive discussion about love languages.

3. What is your favorite time we had together this week?
Note I didn’t say this month or today.  A week is a good unit because you can remember most things easily, but some days are going to go by in a normal relationship without many good things happening.  If you can’t think of any favorite time within seven days, that’s an indicator that you need to make more time as a couple, or that there are underlying issues with the relationship.  And reminiscing about good times together, even as recently as that morning or a week ago, builds feelings of intimacy and closeness.

4. What are you looking forward to doing together as a couple?
Looking forward to events can be even more enjoyable than the events themselves, according to research. So, figure out what you’re looking forward to, whether it’s tonight, next week, this summer, or as retirees. Or all of those! Talking about your plans together makes you feel like a team, and gives you positive thoughts to help you through tougher times in the relationship.

5. When did you first realize you loved me?
Another romantic one that brings you back to the hormone- and endorphin-fueled stages of early love.  These sorts of questions make people feel vulnerable and closely connected.

6. What do you think about our sex life?
This should be a frank and honest discussion, where both partners try their hardest to be non-defensive and non-judgmental.  If it was 20 years from now, wouldn’t you wish you had this open discussion today?  People have no idea what their partner wants if their partner won’t tell them outright.  I have treated couples where a man learned that a wife of decades never enjoyed or orgasmed from things he had been doing every time they had sex.  Don’t let this be you.

7. What do you think we have in common?
This discussion builds closeness and a team feeling.  Opposites don’t actually attract; in most basic ways, couples that succeed are fairly similar. Elaborate on the ways that you have similar thoughts, feelings, goals, values, and interests.  This will emphasize that you’re a unit, and reaffirm your choice in partner.

8. Which of our differences do you think complement each other?
In attachment theory, we’ve seen that avoidant partners often pair with preoccupied partners.  Similarly, assertive partners often pair with passive ones.  There are many ways in which two people with the exact same personality traits wouldn’t work.  One is often more laid back, one more responsible, one more intellectual, one more emotional, and so forth.  This conversation helps you learn more about your partner, as well as realize why it may not be a bad thing that your partner is different than you.  (Would you want to date you? Really? Completely?)

9. Do you trust me?
Many if not most couples have issues in their history that makes them wary of fully trusting the other, whether this is something huge like infidelity, or something like a partner picking their parent over you during arguments. Trust needs to be discussed, and each partner needs to make a good faith effort to repair trust that has been broken. Often, this can be done with a couples counselor, if open discussion does not work.

10. What concrete things could I do to make you happier?
This should be one to three things that a partner could reasonably do on a daily or monthly basis that would genuinely increase the other partner’s quality of life. Having more sex, cleaning or doing some chore on your wife’s timeline and specifications, scheduling more date nights, getting up with the kids, whatever.  Be open to trying new things with the goal of enriching your marriage and making your partner feel valued and cherished.

Hopefully those questions can make it into your conversation tonight.  Let me know how it goes, and share if you found this useful!  Till we meet again, I remain, The Blogapist Who Wants Your Marriage To Be Awesome.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Responds After Tuc Watkins Deems ‘Modern Family’ Couple The Gay Equivalent Of ‘Blackface’

Jesse Tyler Ferguson took to social media after a fellow actor criticized the portrayal of a same-sex couple on “Modern Family” as being “the gay equivalent of ‘blackface.’

The 39-year-old Ferguson, who has nabbed five Emmy nominations for his work on “Modern Family,” said he knew “lots of guys” who could relate to Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitch (Ferguson).

We can’t be expected to represent every gay person,” he wrote on Facebook. “We can only represent these two people. Also, Mitch is basically a version of me…so I never know how to take it when people say
that he is stereotypical. And in defense of Cam, I still can’t figure out how a clown & football coach who also happens to be gay is a stereotype.”

He went on to note, “As a closeted kid of the ’80s I would have loved to have had a show like ‘Modern Family’ to watch with my parents. It would have meant a lot to me to see who I secretly was reflected on television. TV has come a long way and it continues to forge new ground.”

You can check out Ferguson’s full Facebook post here.

Ferguson’s remarks followed those of “Desperate Housewives” actor Tuc Watkins. The openly gay Watkins, who played Bob Hunter on “Housewives” and can currently be seen on “Awkward,” said he had “a hard time laughing at the gay guys” on “Modern Family,” arguing that the show’s portrayal of a same-sex couple “doesn’t feel ‘modern’ at all.”

“It feels a little bit like the gay equivalent of ‘blackface,'” he added, according to reports. “Sure, people come in all shapes, sizes, etc. So why are we fed such ’80s stereotypes every week?”

Earlier this year, “Modern Family” came under fire from the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer, who argued that the ABC series was “designed to make you think that same-sex households are wonderful” and “the optimum nurturing environment for children,” while depicting heterosexual marriage as “bondage, dreary,” and “gloomy.”

“People are just watching TV to be entertained,” Fischer said at the time, “not realizing that their view of life is being twisted in a way that’s very harmful to them and harmful to our culture.”

Original airdate: May 21, 1991

Ben and Jean Williams moved to a peaceful Houston neighborhood in hopes of escaping the dangers associated with big-city living. What they didn’t know is that their idyllic new home was built on a cemetery and had attracted some most unwelcome guests.

Find Out Why This Couple Hired an Exorcist | The Oprah Winfrey Show | Oprah Winfrey Network

Original airdate: October 27, 1986

Thousands of insects growing to the size of mice and flying into the sky. All of the crosses in the house simultaneously spinning on the wall. Black-hooded demons roaming the hallways. These descriptions sound like they’re pulled from popular films like ‘The Amityville Horror.’ According to one Massachusetts couple, however, these supernatural occurrences were real and regularly happened in their home. Parapsychologist Max Toth, who had investigated homes looking for ghosts, maintained a more skeptical viewpoint and said many spooky moments have simple scientific explanations.

The Cute Food Ritual That Keeps This Couple Together

Pizza is a many-splendored thing. And for one Los Angeles couple, it’s also the very thing that keeps their marriage together.

Tina Sugandh and Tarz Ludwigsen, who starred on the Bravo reality show “Newlyweds: The First Year”, stopped by HuffPost Live on Friday to discuss their love contract — a legal document that establishes ground rules about how partners will behave within the relationship. One of their most important tenets? Pizza Fridays.

Article 4.4 of the contract states that they will continue having a “pizza picnic” at home every Friday night. Additionally, both parties “agree to keep this time free from all phone calls and other interruptions. No friends or business colleagues will be invited to Pizza Fridays.”

In the interview, Sugandh explained to host Ricky Camilleri why they take this lighthearted tradition so seriously.

“It’s very very easy to say, ‘Oh, I want to hang out with my sister. She’s having a thing on Friday night.’ Or ‘My dad’s going to pop by on Friday night,'” she said. “But if you don’t save one little time slot a week for your husband, how do you bond? You need time to talk about your week and get it all out.”

For more on Sugandh and Ludwigsen’s relationship contract, watch the video above. Then, head here to watch the full segment.

Couple Of 72 Years Proves It’s Never Too Late To Have The Wedding Of Your Dreams

By Kristen Klein for Bridal Guide

When Mira and Bob Graves tied the knot back in 1942, they did what many young couples of their generation did — they had a quick, no-frills ceremony before Bob was shipped off to war. They’d only been dating for a few months, but they decided to elope right after witnessing their friends exchange vows in Reno.

Seventy-two years later, the happy couple lives at Antioch’s Quail Lodge Retirement Home, where they were named king and queen of the home’s Valentine’s Day celebration. The only problem: When asked to provide a picture of their wedding, they couldn’t — because none were ever taken.

Though the couple has never regretted their low-key wedding ceremony, they jumped at the chance for a wedding do-over when the home’s director, Jennifer Noble, made the suggestion. Noble sprang into action, working with the local community to secure a gown, tux, cake, flowers, music and, most importantly, a photographer.

Watch the sweet video above.

This Married Couple Knows Each Other A Little Too Well (PHOTO)

After 32 years of marriage, couples are bound to start thinking alike.

This couple certainly is. A redditor posted this photo Monday with the caption, “My parents got each other the same Valentine’s Day card by accident.”

The long-married spouses were 240 miles apart at the time the cards were bought, the Redditor explained, so they didn’t buy them at the same store.

At least they can agree who the “fartsy” spouse is!

This Couple Really Loves Football — and Their Wedding Proves It

By Jamie Miles for TheKnot.com

This couple really knows how to stick to a theme! I guess it’s easy when you’re both die-hard football fans (she’s a Giants fan; he’s a Red Skins supporter). Everything from the boutonnieres to the cake toppers and even the wedding sign announcing the bride’s walk down the aisle were inspired by this couple’s shared love of the game. But they even went a step further. Rather than exchanging traditional vows, the couple wrote their own:

From preseason through the play-offs and Super Bowl, in good health and injury, despite tackles and fumbles, whether the New York Giants win or lose, I promise to support and always love you in our game of marriage. And take you as my wife.

This couple’s game-day-inspired wedding by Look Wedding Photography is a touchdown. Here’s why:

The Bride wore New York Giants blue shoes.
2014-01-31-LookWeddingPhotography_TheKnot06.jpg

Even her flowers fit with the Giants’s team colors.
2014-01-31-LookWeddingPhotography_TheKnot01.jpg

The groomsmen wore mini-football boutonnieres.
2014-01-31-LookWeddingPhotography_TheKnot04.jpg

And their formalwear matched the Red Skins’ maroon-and-gold team colors.

The wedding events were outlined in a “Game Day” schedule.

Hilarious Couple Shows Us It’s TOO Easy To Cut Your Wedding Guest List

Trying to narrow down your wedding guest list may seem like an impossible task at first. Consider all of the family, friends, family friends, neighbors, co-workers and ex-lovers who saw your engagement news on Facebook and are eagerly awaiting the invitation.

In a video posted to the Upright Citizens Brigade YouTube channel on Tuesday, comedians (and real-life couple) Laura Grey and Jordan Klepper discover that slashing the guest list isn’t quite as difficult as they thought.

Grounds for elimination include bra size (if bigger than bride’s), weird bangs, lack of black friends and a preference for the American version of “The Office.”

If you get cut, it’s nothing personal. Well, actually, maybe it is.
