Chanel Unveils First Campaign With Penélope Cruz

CRUZ FOR CRUISE: Chanel has unveiled its first advertisements starring Penélope Cruz, who joins the likes of Margot Robbie and Kristen Stewart as the latest star to be lensed for a campaign by Karl Lagerfeld.
The black-and-white images show the Oscar-winning actress dressed in items from the label’s nautical-themed cruise collection, shown in May in front of a 330-foot-long replica ocean liner constructed in the middle of the Grand Palais in Paris.
Cruz brings a sensual warmth to the line’s tweed jackets and striped knits. In one image, she wears a checked tweed beret and a sweater emblazoned with La Pausa, the name of the villa in the South of France built by founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in the Thirties, which Lagerfeld used to christen his spectacular boat.
“It’s such an iconic brand and Karl is a genius, and I’ve been admiring everything he’s done since I was a little girl, so it’s such a pleasure working with him. He’s like the king of fashion and we had a really, really interesting photo shoot, so to be in front of his camera is an adventure,” Cruz told WWD in July.

Penélope Cruz for Carpisa in Milan

MILAN — Penélope Cruz wowed the waiting crowd in Milan at the Carpisa store in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II on Wednesday evening with her appearance to promote her capsule collection with the brand.
In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-moment, the Spanish actress, wearing a maritime striped sweater, blue skinny jeans, a blue fedora and dark blue and black Isabel Marant over-the-knee boots, smiled and waved briefly to her fans outside the Carpisa boutique.
The Italian mass-market travel and carry-on manufacturing brand has tapped the Academy Award winner and her sister, Mónica Cruz, for a capsule that includes styles in different colors and models, ranging from pouches, shoppers, bucket bags and backpacks in suede, animal print and crocodile print. The collection hit stores last week. Penélope Cruz also appears in the ad campaign for the capsule for fall.
This is not the first venture for the look-alike sisters in the design world. The movie star and her younger sibling previously designed a collection of jewelry and handbags for Japanese retail chain Samantha Thavasa, as well as a 25-piece collection for Spanish chain Mango and collaborated on Agent Provocateur’s first diffusion line L’Agent.

Ellen Page Grills Ted Cruz While He Flips Pork At Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowans assume they’ll see plenty of familiar faces at their state fair as election season heats up, but witnessing a famous actress and a presidential candidate engage in a tense discussion over gay rights isn’t something most people expected.

As Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was grilling pork chops surrounded by media on Friday afternoon at the fair, actress Ellen Page, clad in a hat and oversized sunglasses, pushed her way to the front of the pack to ask the GOP presidential hopeful about discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

“LGBTQ people can be fired for just being gay, just being trans,” Page said. “How do you feel about that? That doesn’t sound very American to me.”

“At the end of the day, what we should not be doing is persecuting people,” Cruz replied, not appearing to recognize the Canadian actress.

 Watch the video above.

Page sought out the exchange, which occurred hours before Cruz’s religious freedom rally, for her Vice show called “Gaycation,” in which she shows how LGBT culture is perceived around the world. The Canadian actress came out as gay last year.

“I’m happy to answer your question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate,” Cruz said following one of Page’s interruptions.

“Religious freedom was often used to justify LGBTQ discrimination,” Page said, comparing the Texas senator’s argument to the one used to justify segregation. “A lot of religious people use the Bible to defend segregation.”

Cruz debated with Page about whether private business owners can refuse to serve customers based on religious beliefs, utilizing hypothetical scenarios but also citing an example of an Iowa couple who lost business after they refused to allow a same-sex couple to have their wedding at their venue.

“They were driven out of business … they laid off their employees.” Cruz said while flipping pork chops over a grill. “That is fundamentally wrong. It’s inconsistent with who we are.”

The two then got into a debate about gay right around the world.

“ISIS is executing gay people,” Cruz said. “Iran is executing homosexuals. On the left, you hear complete silence.”

“That’s not true,” Page interrupted.

“And yet, the Obama administration is sending over 100 billion dollars to a regime that murders homosexuals. That is fundamentally wrong,” Cruz continued.

The confrontation lasted a little over six minutes, abruptly ending as Cruz expressed his disapproval of the Obama administration’s lack of action on behalf of LGBT people who are being persecuted in other countries.

“In Iran, it is the governmental body that is executing them for being homosexual, and why does the Obama administration not stand against it?” Cruz asked.

“I don’t know; I would love to talk to Obama about that,” Page replied.

“Well, good, then we are agreed on it,” Cruz responded.

3X1 and Victor Cruz Create Capsule Collection

Victor Cruz has made another fashion play.
The New York Giants player, who fronts Givenchy’s fall 2015 campaign, has partnered with denim line 3X1 on a capsule collection that will be available this September. This is the first celebrity collaboration for the denim brand.
“We really like him as a person,” said Scott Morrison, founder of 3X1. “He came into the shop the first time after the Giants won the Super Bowl and we’ve always wanted to do something a little more unique and special on the men’s side.”
Cruz brought back ideas from a Japan research trip to help design the five-piece collection, which is called A Fall to Remember.
According to Morrison, the line is made from Japanese fabrics and features core items that can fill out a guy’s wardrobe. It includes a classic shirt-jacket with vintage-inspired patch details; a long-sleeve chambray shirt with ombré detailing on one sleeve; a coated denim pant with a tuxedo stripe; a pair of ripped jeans made from stretch selvedge denim, and an indigo dyed wool Melton military coat.
The line is priced from $ 325 for the tuxedo pant to $ 1,325 for the pure indigo wool coat and proceeds from the collection will go to the Victor

The Pentagon’s Response to Ted Cruz Regarding Jade Helm 15

Recently, Senator Ted Cruz from Texas asked the Pentagon to clarify its intentions with military exercises in Central Texas called “Jade Helm 15.” The Pentagon’s response follows:

Dear Senator Cruz:

Thank you for your inquiry into whether the Jade Helm 15 military exercise is the first wave of a federal takeover of Texas, the Trojan Horse, as it were, of the end of sovereignty in the Lone Star State. Our response, contrary to the long tradition of official correspondence and military bureaucracy, is concise: no.

But that’s just what you would expect us to say, isn’t it?

Perhaps, then, you would prefer not an official proclamation but a reasoned answer. As a master debater in college (Princeton, right?), you surely appreciate the reliability of logic, your public statements over the past few years notwithstanding. If you are disinclined to take the United States Armed Forces at their word when we promise no ill intentions towards Texas, then perhaps your considerable and vaunted intellectual powers, which once posited the regrowth of hymens as a guard against unauthorized incursions in domestic affairs, could be swayed by incontrovertible fact.

I know you think highly of our capabilities. Why else would you advocate for a short war with Iran? If we are indeed that powerful, we could probably launch an attack from any of the 15 U.S. military bases already within Texas’ borders. While Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher may have found it necessary, even attractive, to invade countries that can easily be overrun, the present DoD considers such lopsided contests at best unsporting.

As someone who was not born within the borders of this country, it might interest you to know that Texas is already part of the United States. In fact, Texas has twice joined the Union. The first time your adopted state joined the USA in 1845 it set in motion events that led to the Mexican-American War. Later, when Union troops conquered the Southern rebellion, Texas rejoined the Union. It is not, therefore, farfetched to think that Texas’ relationship to the rest of the United States could involve war, but please also keep in mind that when we refer to the United States of America, Texas is being implicitly included. We thought about calling it the United States of America and Texas, but we were afraid people might think Texas was a retrograde backwater of reactionary lunatics who think Moses was a Founding Father and laugh at you. This is way better.

Please also consider there are a great many things about Texas and Texan culture that could be threatened by another unnecessary armed conflict between Texas and the United States. We like Texas barbecue. That Green Beret who carried the flag out for the Texas Longhorn football team? That was pretty cool. The wildflowers along the highways are no joke. The late Texan Chris Kyle, the “American sniper,” is a hero to many. Texas gave the world Lyndon Johnson, a staggering gift for which America was perhaps not entirely prepared. Without the Lone Star State, the Western swing band Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys would have appeared under the performing name Robert Wills and His Playboys, which is ghastly, or not have existed at all, a possibility that DoD has officially classified as “too awful to contemplate”. And we really dig the self-awareness, the love of self that, while occasionally metastasizing into paranoid delusions such as those that motivated your original query, also make Texas a culture with an indelible sense of place.

But, we reiterate, that place is in the United States. On previous visits, we noticed that many of your residents enjoy Social Security and Medicare (you’re welcome), volunteer for the armed services, treasure federal parks, wildlife preserves, and wilderness areas, and earn and spend currency backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. With a quick Internet search, I also learned that nearly a third of Texas’ total revenue is from Federal funding. In fact, millions of your schoolchildren pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America almost every day. And unlike yourself, they apparently mean it.

There is a fundamental misapprehension that we feel is at the root of your query about our intentions was revealed in a recent comment you made to the press.

We are assured it is a military training exercise. I have no reason to doubt those assurances, but I understand the reason for concern and uncertainty, because when the federal government has not demonstrated itself to be trustworthy in this administration, the natural consequence is that many citizens don’t trust what it is saying.

If, Senator Cruz, you believe that the United States military is a political tool of its civilian leadership, you have reached a conclusion unsupported by fact, history and good sense. The troops swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States. To besmirch their loyalty to the country, even in the service of making hackneyed political points in the Republican primary, does not make you a patriot, but a partisan. Even a Princeton and Harvard Law man should know the difference.

Also, it makes you the rudest Canadian we’ve ever run across.

Sincerely Yours,

Secretary Ashton Carter

Elie Jacobs and Frank Spring, who along with Jason Stanford are political partners of the Truman National Security Project, contributed equally to this post but suffer lesser billing because of Stanford’s inability to figure out certain technological hurdles.

‘True Blood’ Turns Ted Cruz Fundraiser At George W. Bush Library Into A Bloodbath (SPOILER ALERT)

True Blood” fans know to expect plenty of bloodshed, often in unique circumstances. But on Sunday night’s episode, the show stepped it up a notch.

SPOILER ALERT: STOP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS EPISODE.

Vampires Eric and his progeny Pam attended a Ted Cruz fundraiser supposedly held at the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas to search for the parents of their enemy, Sarah Newlin.

Trying to blend in, Eric dons a Western-style suit with a bolo instead of a necktie while Pam puts on a purple dress worthy of a gala on either side of the aisle.

But when she catches a glimpse of herself in a mirror, Pam utters a line that would light up Twitter:

Even some on the right admitted they got a kick out of the scene:

When Sarah shows up with the yakuza in hot pursuit, a bloody massacre ensues.

“True Blood” is in its final season so you can expect even more bloodshed before the Aug. 24 series finale.
