Dead or Alive 6 First Hands-On: Can Team Ninja Balance Familiar and Fresh?

When Dead or Alive 6’s producer/director Yohei Shimbori handed us the controller, the first thing we did was mash the punch button. The series’ heroine Kasumi performed a series of familiar open-handed strikes. Our opponent, Zack, tried to punch her in the face, but we were able to successfully time a hold counter attack, and Kasumi twisted Zack’s incoming hand, dropping him to the ground. As soon as he was back on his feet, we executed a throw. Kasumi jumped on top of Zack and mercilessly stamped on his head multiple times. Barely 10 seconds had passed, but it was enough to confirm one thing: This was still the good old Dead or Alive that gamers have come to love since the series’ first entry way back in 1996.

At Least 14 Dead in Bus Crash Involving Canadian Junior Hockey Team

At least 14 people are dead after a passenger bus carrying a junior league hockey team in western Canada’s Saskatchewan province crashed into a tractor-trailer on Friday, police confirmed to PEOPLE on Saturday.

The Humboldt Broncos, a team made up of athletes aged 16 to 20, were on their way to a Saskatchewan Junior League playoff game in the town of Nipawin, according to a statement on the team’s website.

Police said on Friday the crash happened on Highway No. 35,  approximately 18 miles north of Tisdale.

A total of 28 people — including team members, coaches, and the bus driver — were on board at the time of the crash, authorities confirmed in a statement Saturday morning. 14 were killed while the other 14 were sent to a local hospital where they are being treated with “a variety of injuries.” Of the 14 hospitalized, three are in critical condition.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke out about the tragedy on Twitter.

“I cannot imagine what these parents are going through,” Trudeau tweeted, “and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy, in the Humboldt community and beyond.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

“We are not confirming the identity of the victims at this time, including whether the deceased are players or coaches,” a statement from Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. “We will be working with our partner agencies to ensure families are notified as soon as possible and the appropriate supports are provided to families and others who are impacted by this extremely tragic incident.”

Family members of those on the bus are being asked to call 306-752-8700 for more information. A gathering spot for families has been set up at the Nipawin Apostolic Church.

The scene is still being investigated by Nipawin RCMP, police officers from the surrounding detachments and investigators, police said.

Broncos president Kevin Garinger shared his condolences in a statement on the team’s website.

“Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the families of our staff and athletes as well as to all who have been impacted by this horrible tragedy,” his statement read. “Our Broncos family is in shock as we try to come to grips with our incredible loss.”

Ala. Mom Found With Dead Baby in Her Trunk During a Traffic Stop

Last November, police in Jackson, Alabama, made a gruesome discovery during a routine traffic stop when they found the body of a dead newborn in the car’s trunk. This week, a 23-year-old mother of four is behind bars, accused of killing the baby.

Jalesa Gaines was indicted by a grand jury this week on a single manslaughter count, PEOPLE confirms with authorities in Jackson.

Gaines has yet to enter a plea to the charge and information about her lawyer was unavailable Thursday.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The indictment was returned on Wednesday.

Gaines’ car was stopped on Nov. 14, 2017, along Highway 43 in Jackson, for having an expired license plate, according to police.

The deceased infant was discovered in the trunk in a box that was wrapped with a sweater.

While an exact cause of death has not been releaed, officials believe the baby was alive at birth.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

Following the traffic stop, Gaines was detained on an abuse of a corpse charge.

She was also arrested for allegedly providing investigators with a false name.

According to investigators, Gaines has refused to discuss how the baby died.

Colo. Mom Arrested After Dead Baby Found in Backyard With Umbilical Cord Still Attached

A 23-year-old woman is behind bars in Colorado where authorities have accused her of killing her newborn child, PEOPLE confirms.

A statement from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office alleges a lifeless infant was found Tuesday evening in the backyard of her residence.

“Dispatch received reports of what a citizen believed to be a lifeless infant left in her back yard” in Highlands Ranch, the statement alleges.

According to police, the umbilical cord was still attached to the baby.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Detectives were summoned to the scene, and, “through investigative leads,” they identified Camille Wasinger-Konrad as “a suspect” in the baby’s murder.

The statement does not indicate what led investigators to Wasinger-Konrad.

Deputies arrested Wasinger-Konrad on suspicion of murdering her newborn baby.

She remains in custody at the Douglas County Detention Center on a no-bond hold.

The cause and manner of death has yet to be determined, but an autopsy is being performed by the Douglas County Coroner’s Office.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

“This is an open and active investigation,” the statement reads, noting all of the evidence authorities have amassed against Wasinger-Konrad has been turned over to prosecutors. “We’ve asked that the charge of murder in the first degree be filed against Wasinger-Konrad.”

Wasinger-Konrad has not entered a plea. It was unclear Thursday if she has retained legal counsel who could comment on her behalf.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s statement ends with a reminder that the Colorado Safe Haven Law allows a parent to hand over an infant, up to 72 hours old, to an employee at any fire station or hospital with no questions asked.

As long as the baby is unharmed, the parent will not be prosecuted for abandonment.

Adopted Woman Whose Family Thought She Was Dead Reunites with Siblings 60 Years Later: ‘I Feel Whole’

For decades, Sylvia Kewer’s family thought she was dead.

Kewer, who was adopted as a toddler, grew up in Emporia, Virginia, believing she was an only child. All of that changed in August when she learned she has four half-siblings.

“ was saying her whole life she didn’t know what she was. She kept saying, ‘What am I?’ ” Kewer’s daughter, Natalie Graves Tucker, tells PEOPLE.

“Here she is thinking she’s alone all these years and doesn’t know her story … She’s always been a loner and here she has four siblings with children and grandchildren!”

On Nov. 11, Kewer met her half-siblings (and dozens of other family members) at a sweet reunion in Abingdon. Tucker rented a home for the family where they had a cookout and shared old photographs.

“It was a culmination of pictures and conversations and emails that we’ve had with the family over the past few months. It was exciting,” Tucker says. “They just opened their arms with love and so it couldn’t have happened any better. I couldn’t have planned it any better.”

Kewer spent a day and half with her newfound siblings: Billy Ray, 63, Nancy Goode-O’Donnell, 69, Ralph Duff and Curtis Duff, 72.

Tucker says the reunion left her mother feeling loved, she recalls Kewer saying: “I feel whole, reborn, refreshed and stronger than ever.”

A Family Journey

The siblings’ reunion was months in the making, and it all began with a DNA test on Ancestry.com. Tucker and Kewer submitted tests and soon learned that their DNA matched that of several other people — including Ray’s son.

“When I told her that her brother wanted to FaceTime her, she was just like, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ ” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “It’s just so amazing for her. She’s like there’s no longer a question mark. ‘I know who I am and I know what I am.’ ”

Tucker, Ray and Kewer began communicating and, over the next few months, Tucker says she received Facebook messages from cousins, nieces, nephews and more, all eager to attend the cookout Tucker had planned for the family’s reunion.

As the family met and exchanged stories at the rental home from Crooked Cabin Properties, they began to piece together Kewer’s story.

Many of the siblings went their separate ways as children, one was raised by a grandmother, another by their father, and others were adopted. Kewer’s four half-siblings had long known about each other, and reunited at their mother’s funeral in the ’80s.

However, Kewer, born Dorothy Mae Goode, was the mystery.

“Billy found and everybody kept saying, ‘I guess Dorothy was dead,” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “My mom only remembers an orphanage and she remembers my grandparents coming to get her.”

A Fresh Start

Now that Kewer has found her family, she never plans to let them go. Tucker says the siblings exchanged phone numbers, noting that Kewer talks to her half-sister Nancy almost every day.

“There is talk about having another get together next year in the spring or the summer,” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “Everybody wants to get together next year.”

Sneak Peek of Family Portrait: Ben & Daniel’s Road to Adoption

She adds of her mother: “Now that she has everybody’s information, she definitely plans to connect with everybody.”

With the reunion, Tucker says a special bond was formed between Kewer and Nancy.

“Her and her sister just stuck together like glue when they were there,” Tucker tells PEOPLE.

Avildsen had been suffering pancreatic cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, his son, Anthony, said by phone.

Avildsen won the Academy Award for best director for “Rocky” while the film was named best picture and other successes included the “The Karate Kid” series in the 1980s. He directed seven actors to Oscar nominations.

In the years before “Rocky,” Avildsen won praise for two dark character studies: “Joe” (1970) with Peter Boyle and Susan Sarandon and “Save the Tiger” (1973) starring Jack Lemmon, who won the Academy Award for best actor for the role.

He also had his share of career setbacks, directing some clunkers and being fired as director of 1970s classics “Saturday Night Fever” and “Serpico” because of disputes with producers.

“Rocky” proved to be as much of an underdog success story as the fictional Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa portrayed by Stallone, who wrote the screenplay. Stallone was an obscure actor at the time but stubbornly refused to allow studios to cast anyone but himself in the role. Producers Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler consented to let him take the role under Avildsen’s guidance.

“Rocky” was made for a modest $ 1 million and generated $ 225 million in ticket sales to became a cultural phenomenon, with a series of unforgettable characters and scenes and a blend of romance with pugilistic action.

The film centers on charismatic champion Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers, plucking Balboa, known as “The Italian Stallion,” from obscurity for a dream shot at the world heavyweight boxing title.

Rocky, who earns money as a collector for a loan shark, falls in love with the mousy Adrian (Talia Shire), the sister of his miserable friend Paulie (Burt Young), and gets help from a gruff trainer named Mickey (Burgess Meredith) who long felt Rocky had wasted his considerable potential.

Avildsen took the “Rocky” job only because funding fell through for another movie he was set to direct.

“My friend sent me this (”Rocky”) script and got me to read it,” Avildsen told the Birmingham, Alabama, News in 2000. “And on the third page, this guy is talking to his turtles, and I was hooked. It was a great character study.”

There were low expectations. “It had to be done in 28 days for less than a million bucks, and nobody bothered you because there was so little money involved,” Avildsen said. “There was no anticipation of it being anything but on the bottom bill of a drive-in in East Podunk.”

“Rocky” was nominated for 10 Oscars and won three. In accepting the Oscar for best director in March 1977, Avildsen told the audience, “I guess what ‘Rocky’ did was give a lot of people hope and there was never a better feeling than doing that.”

Avildsen’s professional stumbles included tangling with stars John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd on the comedy “Neighbors” (1981), then made the crass male-stripper movie “A Night in Heaven” (1983).

His next film, “The Karate Kid” in 1984, triumphed with an underdog theme similar to “Rocky” as a bullied teenager played by Ralph Macchio overcame the odds with the help of a wise martial arts master, played by Pat Morita. He also directed “Karate Kid” sequels in 1986 and 1989.

Avildsen returned to the “Rocky” franchise to direct the critically panned “Rocky V” (1990) about a protégé who turns on Rocky. Avildsen intended for the Rocky character to die in the film but studio bosses disagreed. “They told me James Bond doesn’t die. Superman doesn’t die. Rocky doesn’t die,” Avildsen told USA Today in 2014. “So Rocky didn’t die. But the movie died.”

Avildsen also directed Burt Reynolds in the likable caper “W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings” (1975), George C. Scott and Marlon Brando in the thriller “The Formula” (1980), Morgan Freeman in school drama “Lean on Me” (1989) and the apartheid tale “The Power of One” (1992).

Avildsen was born on Dec. 21, 1935, in Oak Park, Illinois. After serving in the military, he made industrial films for companies and worked as an assistant to directors, including Otto Preminger before directing his first film in 1969, “Turn On to Love.”

Adam West, ‘Batman’ Star, Dead At 88

Longtime actor Adam West died Friday night, June 9, at the age of 88. He famously played the title role in the 1960s television series “Batman.”

A rep confirmed to Variety that the actor died after being treated briefly for leukemia.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” said his family in a statement.

The West family also tweeted from his account:

West remained a working actor until his death, notably with recurring voice work for animated projects such as “Family Guy” and “Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders.”

On “Family Guy,” the actor voiced a character with his own name. “Adam West” seemed to be immortal no matter what medical catastrophe came his way. A memorable moment from the show involved a doctor telling West he had lymphoma ― “Probably from rolling around in that toxic waste.” The doctor goes on to ask, “What in God’s name were you trying to prove?”

West’s response, “I was trying to gain super powers.”

The actor also made cameos as himself on shows like “30 Rock” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

Over the past 50 years, he never fully retired his role as Batman, voicing the character as late as 2017 in the upcoming video “Batman vs. Two-Face.” Since the original show, West also appeared in various non-lead roles in the “Batman” series.

West’s “Batman” is now remembered as being comically over-the-top, as he was in relatively low-budget action sequences and often uttered cringe-inducing dialogue. Perhaps the most famous line from the series was when West yelled, “Quick! To the Batmobile!”

The actor embraced the humor of his take on the Dark Knight throughout the rest of his life. In 2006, West appeared on the game show “I’ve Got A Secret” and revealed that he even got a “tattoo” of the Batman logo on one of his teeth.

West graduated from Whitman College as a literature major. After being drafted into the United States Army, he got a gig as the announcer for an internal television service for the military called the American Forces Network. It wasn’t until 1959 ― when West moved his then wife and two children to Hollywood, California ― that he took the stage name Adam West, adapted from his given name, William West Anderson.

After moving to Hollywood, West secured small roles in numerous shows and movies, many of which were Westerns. But when he landed the role as Batman about a decade into his career, West became extremely famous.

Once the original run of “Batman” ended in 1968, West had a bit of a lull in his career, with serious work being hard to come by. To support his family, he had to do “things that I wasn’t very comfortable doing,” the actor explained in the 2013 documentary “Starring Adam West.” He had exploit his fame for money with celebrity event appearances and risky ventures, such as a daredevil stunt where he drove a car through a truck.

West’s persistence eventually started earning him more comedic roles, though, as he embraced the love fans had for his zany Batman.

In April 2012, West was finally awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. To begin his acceptance speech, West addressed the crowd as “citizens of Gotham.”

The actor is survived by his wife, Marcelle Tagand Lear, whom he married 1970. West has four children over three marriages ― Hunter Anderson and Jonelle S. Anderson with his second wife, Nga Frisbie Dawson, and Nina West and Perrin West with Lear. West also has two stepchildren from the Lear marriage, Moya and Jill.

The Robin to his original Batman, Burt Ward, is now 71.

Gregg Allman, Classic Rock Legend Of The Allman Brothers Band, Dead

Gregg Allman, one of the two brothers from legendary rock band the Allman Brothers Band, has died. He was 69.

He “passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia,” according to a statement on Allman’s official website. “Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.”

Allman was born on Dec. 8, 1947, in Nashville. He was also born a ramblin’ man, if his band’s 1973 classic rock hit was any indication. He, along with his brother Duane, helped to create one of the most successful classic rock bands of all time. With that came not just music, but drugs, women and ― at times ― tragedy, including the early death of Duane.

In his later years, Allman developed hepatitis C, and suffered from an irregular heartbeat and a respiratory infection and had to have a liver transplant. In 2017, he canceled a planned summer tour, sparking worries about his health.

Allman was born to Willis Allman, a WWII veteran who stormed Normandy Beach, came back to his bride after the war, and had two sons. His father’s life was cut short when Gregg was just 2 years old. After Willis Allman offered a stranger a ride home from a bar one night, the man fatally shot him in the back.

Neither Gregg nor Duane showed any interest in emulating their father’s military career. The boys hated the military school their mother sent them to, but found their footing in music while there, according to Rolling Stone.

“I learned to play mostly from black people,” Allman told The Guardian in 2015. “We used to listen to a station that called itself ‘The black spot on your dial.’ It played Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and it hit Duane and me like spaghetti hitting a wall.”

By the time the Allman Brothers Band was formed in 1969, Gregg and Duane were legitimate country hippies ― long-haired, drug-smoking free-loving spirits. Duane played guitar, with Gregg on vocals. Other founding members of the band included drummers “Butch” Trucks and Jai “Jaimoe” Johnny Johnson, along with “Dickey” Betts on guitar and Berry Oakley on bass.

The Allman Brothers Band blended country, jazz, blues and Southern rock in such seamless riffs, pounding drums and twangy vocals that it earned them a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and a Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys in 2012. The movie “Almost Famous” was also, in part, inspired by the band.

The Allman Brothers Band produced their biggest hits in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, including “Ramblin’ Man,” “Midnight Rider” and “Whipping Post.” During this time, the band experimented heavily with drugs and attracted many groupies on tour.

“Gregg was just a pretty boy,” drummer Butch Trucks told Rolling Stone in 1999. “He had blond hair, and the girls were hanging all over him.”

In his book My Cross To Bear, Gregg bragged about his sexual exploits.

“I would have women in four or five different rooms,” Allman wrote about staying in hotels while on tour. “Mind you, I wouldn’t lie to anybody; I’d just say, ‘I’ll be right back.’”

During those earlier years, he and his bandmates were also experimenting with drugs, including (but not limited to) PCP, cocaine and speed. The band loved psychedelic mushrooms so much, they made them their unofficial logo and tattooed a mushroom on each of their calves, according to Rolling Stone.

In 1971, just as the band found itself being propelled into stardom, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. He was  24.

“Duane was the king of laughter, always making jokes,” Gregg Allman told The Guardian in 2015. “You’ve got to keep laughing. It was what Duane would have done, and wanted us to do.”

At Duane’s funeral, Gregg played songs on his older brother’s antique guitar.

“This is a very old guitar, a very beautiful piece,” he said to a crowd of 300. “It was made in 1920 and I’m very proud to have it. And I’m very proud that you all came.”

In 1975, Allman married singer Cher in Las Vegas. The marriage lasted nine days, ending after Allman allegedly pulled a knife on her while trying to score heroin. They reconciled after learning Cher was pregnant with their son, Elijah Blue.

In 1977, Cher divorced Allman for good. The final straw was reportedly at an awards show, when Allman passed out face-first in a plate of spaghetti.

“Every now and then,” Allman wrote in his 2012 memoir, “I’ll think of all the hell I caused other people over the years.”

Allman eventually embraced sobriety.

“I’m doing great,” Allman told the Savannah Morning News in 2013. “I’ve been clean and sober for 19 years.”

Rest easy, midnight rider.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story gave the wrong year of Allman’s birth. Language has also been changed regarding Allman’s role in “Ramblin’ Man.”

Rosario Dawson Opens Up About Finding Cousin Dead Inside Her Home

Rosario Dawson is breaking her silence on her cousin’s death weeks after discovering the 26-year-old’s body.

Earlier this month, the actress found Vaneza Ines Vasquez unresponsive inside her Los Angeles home. Vasquez was later transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after. Early autopsy results suggested Dawson’s cousin died due to natural causes. Vasquez, who was working for Dawson at the time of her death, was also reportedly experiencing migraines and hypertension.

“My cousin just died, Vaneza [Ines Vazquez], and I’m coming up on the 6-year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing,” Rosario told Build Series on Wednesday in a conversation about her work with The Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York. “And from 75 to 26, you just don’t know when your time is. I just don’t want to be in any kind of position where I’m looking back going, ‘Ah, I should’ve, could’ve, would’ve, didn’t, damn!’”

In the week’s following her cousin’s death, Dawson has pledged not to take things for granted, reevaluating her priorities and finding comfort in her family.

“Tomorrow is not guaranteed, and you want to make sure the people that you love know that, and that you’re doing things with your time that you’re proud of, because it goes by so fast. It gets really easy to get caught up in the minutiae,” she said.

“I’ve been dealing with a lot of loss lately and reconnecting with my family and my friends in a different way,” she continued. “I’m realizing how much I’ve pulled myself back, and I’ve been just really humbled by this opportunity tonight.”

Later in the evening, Dawson was honored for her work at The Lower Eastside Girls Club, which provides a safe and enriching space for girls from low-income families. The actress is a founding board member and grew up in the same neighborhood the Girls Club operates in.

The HoloLens Inventor Thinks “the Phone Is Already Dead”

Microsoft’s Alex Kipman, HoloLens inventor has proclaimed that mobile phones as a device are dead.

While discussing the medium, Bloomberg reports that Kipman is sure that the phones will soon be replaced by hybrid devices more akin to the HoloLens. “The phone is already dead,” he says. “People just haven’t realized.”

This sentiment is seemingly echoed throughout Microsoft as the company focuses on their other devices, despite the potential 1.5 billion smartphones likely to be sold this year.

Microsoft has said it would rather stay out of the mobile phone market entirely unless they can offer something truly different. Marketing chief Yusuf Mehdi has even stated  “We’re not going to come out with another device that someone’s done,” remarking on the stagnant nature of innovation within the industry.

Pepe The Frog Is Dead: Cartoonist Kills Off Stoner Amphibian Hijacked By Alt-Right

Pepe the Frog is dead.

Cartoonist Matt Furie made it official by drawing Pepe in an open casket. The funeral parlor scene was part of a single-page strip he created for Fantagraphics’ “World’s Greatest Comics” to mark Free Comic Book Day on Saturday.

Furie turned on his creation after the alt-right fringe began using the frog as a kind of mascot.

“It dawned on me that Pepe was channeling some evil shit,” Furie said last year. “It just kind of melts my spirit a bit because a cartoon I had made becomes somebody’s symbol for hate. It’s pretty terrible.”

Furie said he was using the situation as an opportunity to speak out against hate. Pepe’s “not a hater, he’s a lover,” he said.

Pepe and his three 20-something slacker pals debuted in the deadpan “Boy’s Club” zine on Furie’s MySpace blog in 2005. Their exploits were later published in a collection by Fantagraphics.

But the little frog’s life took a creepy turn when he was repeatedly hijacked for hate messages, particularly during the 2016 presidential election. Pepe was redrawn leering with malice and featured alongside vile sentiments. Things got so bad that Pepe was officially classified as a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League.

President Donald Trump even retweeted an image of himself as Pepe.

Later, Donald Trump Jr. reposted a meme titled “The Deplorables” on Instagram, which featured various Republicans as a crew of action heroes. The meme was created after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used the phrase “basket of deplorables” to describe some of Trump’s supporters. The meme included Trump Jr., his dad and Pepe. (Junior said he was “proud” to be so honored.)

Frustrated, Furie launched a #SavePepe campaign to keep the slacker frog true to his once-chill self. Some followers of the hashtag were crushed by Pepe’s death while those on the alt-right celebrated what they saw as Furie’s surrender.

The thing to worry about now: alt-right zombie Pepe.

‘Happy Days’ Star Erin Moran Dead At 56

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Erin Moran, best known for playing Joanie Cunningham on the 1970s sitcom “Happy Days,” has died. She was 56.

According to TMZ, Moran’s body was found unresponsive Saturday afternoon by authorities in Indiana. The cause of death is unknown.

The California-born actress, who also starred in the “Happy Days” spinoff “Joanie Loves Chachi,” had fallen on hard times in recent years. She was reportedly kicked out of her trailer park home in Indiana because of her hard-partying ways.

Henry Winkler, who starred opposite Moran as The Fonz in CBS’ iconic series, tweeted: “OH Erin…now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth. Rest In It serenely now…too soon.”

Moran was just 14 when she signed on to play Ron Howard’s sister in the family comedy, which aired from 1974 to 1984.

“What happened with all of us was like we were this family,” Moran said in a 2009 interview with Xfinity. “It was so surreal with all the cast members…They were my family, get it?”

The actress, however, apparently wasn’t as happy about appearing in “Joanie Loves Chachi,” the short-lived sitcom spin-off which co-starred Scott Baio.

“I liked working with the people. But I didn’t even want to do it. I was talked into it,” she said. “I wanted to stay on ‘Happy Days.’ They were running them at the same time.”

“Joanie Loves Chachi” only lasted one season (1982-83) before it was pulled off the air.

Moran’s TV credits also included “The Love Boat,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

She most recently appeared on VH1’s reality show “Celebrity Fit Club” in 2008 and low-budget film “Not Another B Movie” 2010.

In 2012, Moran and some of her “Happy Days” co-stars — Anson Williams, Marion Ross, Don Most and the widow of Tom Bosley – filed a $ 10 million lawsuit against CBS, claiming they never received merchandise royalties they were owed under their contracts. The case was later settled out of court. Neither Henry Winkler nor Ron Howard were part of the lawsuit.

Most said in a statement, “I am so incredibly sad to hear about Erin. She was a wonderful, sweet, caring, talented woman. As I write this I can’t really comprehend this right now. A very painful loss. It gives me some comfort to know that she’s with Tom, Al, Pat and Garry. Rest In Peace, sweetErin.”

Williams, who played Potsie in “Happy Days,” said, “Erin was a person who made everyone around her feel better. She truly cared about others first, a true angel. I will miss her so much, but know that she is in God’s hands. RIP sweet angel.”

David Letterman’s Pie-Loving Mom, Dorothy Mengering, Dead At 95

Dorothy Mengering, the mother of David Letterman who made occasional appearances during his time hosting “Late Night,” died Tuesday. She was 95.

From her kitchen in Carmel, Indiana, Mengering ― known simply as “Dave’s Mom” ― showed up often via satellite to play a heartwarming pie guessing game, in which her son guessed which types of pie she’d baked. With her sweet temper and charming sincerity, she became an audience favorite.

Letterman also put his mother to work as a foreign correspondent of sorts for the show during the Winter Olympics in 1994, 1998 and 2002. In the first, held in Lillehammer, Norway, she interviewed then–first lady Hillary Clinton, asking a hard-hitting question about the Connecticut speed limit, which nabbed her an invite to the White House.

“After Lillehammer, I couldn’t believe how it all took off,” Mengering told The New York Times about her role on “Late Night” and taste of fame after releasing her cookbook, Home Cookin’ with Dave’s Mom, in 1996. (You can find it on Amazon.)

She went on: “I think it’s about the idea of mom and of a family. People are eager for families to be like they used to be. Even though there are lots of working moms and single-parent families now, you can still be a family in spite of the size and form it takes.”

As Letterman, who turned 70 on Wednesday, prepared to retire from his longtime role as host in 2015, he aired a special Mother’s Day montage honoring Mengering. (Catch the clip, which includes a peek at Dave’s Mom’s beer-stocked fridge, below.)

Late Tuesday, Letterman’s successor, Stephen Colbert, shared a heartfelt note of condolence over Twitter about Mengering, saying he feels “so grateful that Dave shared her with us.”

‘Walking Dead’ Star’s Reaction To Surprise Reunion Will Melt Your Heart

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “The Walking Dead” Season 7.

The Walking Dead” has already made us cry our eyes out with its Season 7 finale. Now it’s trying to melt our hearts, too.

In Sunday’s emotional episode, we said goodbye to Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) after she took a suicide pill and nearly killed Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as a zombie. Before the revelation of Sasha’s death, however, the episode gave us flashbacks to moments between her and her boo, Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), who met his end in the Season 7 premiere thanks to Negan.

Later Sunday night, Martin-Green showed up to discuss her run on the show on “Talking Dead,” where she got a surprise visit from a familiar face ― and her reaction was almost better than the finale.

As you can see above, Cudlitz, who was supposedly filming a project in Canada, dropped by to surprise his former co-star with flowers.

Twitter couldn’t handle it:

Like Beyoncé’s alter ego, Sasha on “The Walking Dead” was always fierce. But who cares about being fierce after this? R.I.P. to Abraham and Sasha, but their love will never die. Neverrrrr!

Pop Art Pioneer James Rosenquist Dead At 83

Artist James Rosenquist, a leading figure of the 1960s pop art movement known for his room-sized works, has died at the age of 83, his studio said.

Rosenquist helped define the genre of color-bursting displays of common objects that was also championed by the likes Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

He died on Friday, the studio said, without providing further details.

Rosenquist had early experience as a billboard painter, which became a springboard for presentations of images that he culled from sources including print advertisements and magazines, it said.

He had shows in some of the world’s most celebrated museums, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, it said.

“Painting is probably much more exciting than advertising,” Rosenquist was quoted as saying by the Museum of Modern Art.

“So why shouldn’t it be done with that power and gusto, with that impact.”

One of his more celebrated works is “F-111,’ which is billboard in size and made in 1964 and 1965, during the U.S. war in Vietnam. It combines images including a U.S. military warplane, a bombing and scenes of American prosperity, including a smiling blonde girl sitting under a hair dryer reminiscent of a missile, the museum said.

His celebrated 1962 painting of Marilyn Monroe was created shortly after her death and shows fragmented images of the global star that includes a segment of the Coca-Cola brand name, it said.

Rosenquist was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he had a nomadic life that took him and his parents to about a half dozen places including in Minnesota and Ohio. He studied at the University of Minnesota and moved to New York in his twenties.

“Painting has everything to do with memory. Images of the unexpected, the surreal, well up unbidden in your mind – as do things you haven’t resolved,” he said in his autobiography written with David Dalton titled “Painting Below Zero.”

Darlene Cates, ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ Star, Dead At 69

Darlene Cates, who starred as Bonnie Grape in 1993’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” died in her sleep on Sunday morning, her family told TMZ.

Cates, best known for playing Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio’s housebound and overweight mother in the Peter Hedges novel-turned-movie, was 69. Her daughter, Sheri, took to Facebook to share the news, writing, “We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of our Heavenly Father.”

Cates was reportedly cast in “Gilbert Grape” after Hedges watched her on a 1992 segment on “Sally Jessy Raphael,” entitled “Too Heavy to Leave Their House.” Casting directors offered Cates ― who was close to 600 pounds and housebound at the time ― the role of Bonnie, and she accepted. It was a standout performance by Cates, who went on to appear in shows like “Picket Fences” and “Touched by an Angel.” She is also set to star in the new movie “Billboard,” which is currently in post-production.

In 2012, Cates revealed she lost 250 pounds after years of health problems. She told the Dallas Morning News that she hoped to act again, as she had such a lovely experience with “Gilbert Grape.”

Her on-screen son DiCaprio wrote her a note after the film, telling Cates, “I’m not really the best in expressing my words in writing but you are the most special person I have ever [met]. I’ll always remember you as the best acting mamma I ever had. You triumphed in your role.”

Rest in peace, Darlene Cates.

Rock ’N’ Roll Legend Chuck Berry Dead At 90

Rock ’n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry has died, Missouri police said Saturday. He was 90.

“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry,” police said in a statement posted to Facebook.

First responders were called out to a home on Buckner Road around 12:40 p.m. and found a man later identified as Berry unresponsive “and immediately administered lifesaving techniques,” the statement reads. They were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m.

Berry penned a great number of hits in the 1950s and 1960s like “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Rock and Roll Music” that influenced generations of rock groups, including The Beatles. Merging a captivating stage presence with his own blend of blues, country and jazz, Berry helped define the fledgling rock’n’ roll genre, later becoming one of the first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

Born into a middle-class family in St. Louis, Missouri, Berry picked up the basics of guitar from a neighbor and started performing music as a teenager. In 1952, he formed a trio with Johnnie Johnson on piano and Ebby Harding on drums that rose to fame in the local nightclub scene. To pay the bills, Berry worked as a hairdresser. But soon enough he wouldn’t have time for that ― a trip to Chicago netted a recording session with Chess Records, during which Berry performed an old hillbilly tune called “Ida Red.” Changing the name to “Maybellene,” Chess sent the track to an influential New York DJ, and it became a hit among the teenage set.

According to an oft-cited line by John Lennon, “If you tried to give rock ‘n’ roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry.’” Berry’s music became so well-known, he toured the country with only a guitar, trusting he’d be able to find musicians in each city he played who could serve as his back-up. Many of his lyrics focused on teen culture, although he was significantly past that age by the time he started traveling around singing about cars and dates.

Chuck Berry’s signature “duck walk.”

But in the nascent era of the Civil Rights Movement, Berry’s status as a black man with a following of young white people ― a lot of them girls ― caused certain conflict. He’d been known to take refuge in police stations to dodge protesters after his shows, which sometimes featured police presence themselves, according to an Esquire profile. After a teenage coat-check girl who worked briefly at a club he owned alleged Berry had an affair with her, the guitarist served two years in prison. A tax evasion charge sent him to prison again, briefly, in 1979. Then, in 1990, a police raid on a recording compound he owned turned up a stash of marijuana and images of Berry with nude women ― including one underage ― but charges were later dropped.

Notoriously interview-shy, Berry had been living out his later years in Ladue, Missouri ― near his hometown. He never stopped writing music, and performed regular gigs at a local restaurant and club called Blueberry Hill.

Open-internet rules look dead. Now what?

Open-internet rules look dead. Now what?President Trump’s new head of the Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, hasn’t been in office long, but he’s has been quick to make his policy priorities clear. The rules currently remain in force, and still bar internet providers from stopping or slowing down legal websites and apps — or straight up charging them for faster delivery of their data. One of Pai’s first moves as chairman was to propose a five-year extension of an expired waiver that had let smaller internet providers out of reporting requirements mandating disclosure of “network management practices, performance and commercial terms,” otherwise known as fees and surcharges you may owe them.

‘Walking Dead’ Star Josh McDermitt Goes Off On Co-Star’s Body-Shamers

Negan isn’t the only one who will “shut that s**t down.” Now, it’s Eugene’s turn.

The Walking Dead” actor Alanna Masterson was brutally body-shamed after a recent episode featured her character, Tara. Masterson, who gave birth to her daughter right before filming began on Season 7 (and went back to work anyway), revealed the abuse in a powerful Instagram post, and this all just doesn’t sit right with her co-star Josh McDermitt.

While talking with The Huffington Post during a Build Series interview, the actor went off on Masterson’s body-shamers.

“She just had a kid. That’s why she hasn’t been in the first six episodes because she was recovering from pregnancy and then people are talking trash about her appearance, and it’s like, screw you,” he said.

McDermitt continued, “I’m going to bully you into stop bullying. That’s what I feel like we need to do. I don’t know how this is gonna work, but we have to stop bullying each other and calling people out for their appearance.”

The actor said he often acts self-deprecating to take the wind out of the bullies’ sails, but he explained, “Not everyone’s gonna do that, and, honestly, I wish I didn’t have to do that.”

“People need to chill the F out with the crap that they’re putting on the internet. It’s very disturbing because we are people, everyone. And I’m not talking about actors. I’m talking about anyone on the internet. I mean, I just read something on CNN the other day where a teenage girl committed suicide who was cyber bullied. This is bullshit. This should never happen,” he said.

McDermitt said social media companies aren’t doing enough and called on them to go after bullies and shut down accounts.

In the meantime, Tara from “Walking Dead” has her own message for bullies:

‘Walking Dead’ Basically Confirms That Theory You Suspected

We’ve already learned who took Morgan’s peanut butter bar, but “The Walking Dead” answered even more questions in Sunday’s Season 6 episode, “JSS.”

(Warning! Spoilers! There is no sanctuary!)

First of all, yeah, it was the Wolves sounding that horn we heard in the season premiere. While Rick and the other survivors are out leading a zombie parade, the Wolves break into Alexandria and just start smashing people’s faces. The horn was from a truck they crashed into the walls during the assault.

Morgan made it back in time to kick the crud out of people with his bow staff, Napoleon Dynamite-style, but the real MVP of the episode was Carol. She finally gave up her goody-goody act this week by disguising herself as a Wolf and then completely destroying the attackers.

The most important part of the episode, however, was that it might’ve confirmed a popular theory fans have had online:

The theory: Enid is helping the Wolves.

Image: Tumblr

No! Just when Carl finally finds something he likes besides pudding! Typical, right?

Enid’s possible involvement with the Wolves has been speculated on for a while. As evidence, fans point to the fact that she has a mysterious past and doesn’t seem to share the same fear of the walkers as the other Alexandrians, she frequently goes outside the walls and, of course, there’s this Easter egg from Season 5 showing Carl looking at Enid’s comic:

“Wolf Fight.” Yeah, we see what you did there, AMC.

It turns out the title of the episode, “JSS” is actually Enid’s mantra: Just Survive Somehow. This week opens with a flashback showing Enid’s parents getting killed and then follows her through all the unpleasant JSS situations she gets herself into, one being a pretty graphic scene involving a turtle.

Let’s just say Bear Grylls would be proud. (And then he would probably drink a gallon of his own pee or something.)

(Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff.)

Enid is pretty nonchalant about the Wolves attacking the whole time. People are dying everywhere and she doesn’t even care. She just walks to Carl’s house to say goodbye because it’s suddenly time for her to peace out. Oh, and she has keys to the whole town, apparently.

When Carl asks her about the Wolves, she says they’re “just people” and that Alexandria is “too big to protect.” She goes on saying, “There are too many blind spots. That’s how we were able to …” Then Carl cuts her off.

Uh, what now? “We”? Let the girl finish, Carl!

Considering Enid’s motto, ”just survive somehow,” it makes perfect sense that she’d do whatever she could to stay alive. And if she encountered the Wolves outside the walls before, surviving may even include giving them intel and helping to bring down Alexandria.

Is Enid actually helping the Wolves? Only time will tell. But at this point, we can at least be pretty sure she’s just this kid in disguise:

“The Walking Dead” airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on AMC.

Update: An earlier version speculated that the photos Aaron found on the dead body were given to the Wolves, but actually they were photos that were previously lost.

Andrew Lincoln Dropped His Script Over Crazy Upcoming ‘Walking Dead’ Episode

Look at the flowers, “Walking Dead” fans. Season 6 is going to blow your minds.

(Warning! Spoilers!)

The Season 6 premiere of “The Walking Dead” aired Sunday, and wow. After discovering an army of walkers trapped not far from Alexandria, Rick convinced everyone to follow his pretty insane idea to lead all the walkers away at once. Then, just when you think they’re finally in the clear, a mysterious horn sounded from the direction of Alexandria, leading all the walkers directly there.

Holy crud. And it’s about to get even more nuts.

The Huffington Post caught up with star Andrew Lincoln at the “Walking Dead” fan premiere. He said the show eclipses its zombie count from all of last season in the first three episodes of Season 6, and ”every single episode is like a season finale.”

“The fallout in those last 30 seconds sort of propels the story arc for the next maybe eight episodes, and get ready — because two and three are like body blows and then four spins out into this indie arthouse movie — then five, six, seven, eight – I think nine is the most crazy episode we’ve had. I dropped my script when I read it. I was just like, ‘Nooo! We’re doing that?'” said Lincoln. ”So yeah, it’s crazy. It’s amazing storytelling. I think [showrunner] Scott Gimple and the team have just outdone themselves this season.”

Yep. Time to get excited. And crazy episodes aren’t the only thing coming. Rick Grimes also told us a fallen friend is making a return to the show.

“The beard is definitely coming back. I was campaigning for it,” said Lincoln.

Hallelujah! It’s back! Rick Grimes‘ heavenly beard is back! Fear the beard, walkers.

Fear. The. Beard.

Now You Can Pay $19.99 For A Big Handful Of Dead Leaves

BOSTON (Reuters) – People who want to see New England’s colorful fall foliage no longer need to travel for the experience. A Boston-area man is offering to ship bundles of the dried up, multi-colored vegetation straight to your door for $ 19.99.

Kyle Waring, of Somerville, Massachusetts, set up the website shipfoliage.com earlier this year and began sending his first packages of hand-picked leaves to U.S. customers this week.

“I’ve hit over 200 sales so far,” he said.

Waring came up with the idea while contemplating “seasonal monetization opportunities” with his wife. They settled on leaves, he said, because “fall in New England is especially gorgeous and really strikes an emotional chord.”

It is not Waring’s first foray into seasonal offerings. Last winter, he shipped snow from Boston’s record snowfall for $ 89, using the website ShipSnowYo.com. He said he received requests for 718 pounds (326 kg) of snow from around the United States.

According to shipfoliage.com, Kyle offers bundles of three leaves of red, yellow and green, ranging from 3 to 6 inches (7.5 to 15 cm) in size. The leaves are preserved in a mixture of glycerin and water and shipped.

New England states bring in an estimated $ 3 million in tourism revenue during the autumn foliage season, which typically lasts for a couple of weeks in October.

Is Monogamy Dead?

2015-10-08-1444317267-520131-Mormon_Family_Russells_Polygamy_in_Low_Life.jpg

William Baude’s Times Op-Ed piece (“Is Polygamy Next,” 7/21/15) gives voice to a fear that legalizing same sex marriage has opened up a Pandora’s Box. If we allow people of the same sex to be married why should people who want to be married to more than one person be excluded from expressing their heart desire? Why should those who are genetically or culturally disposed to polygamy be prevented from expressing their true selves? Polygamy has been a part of the Mormon culture and since Mr. Baude believes Justice Kennedy’s line of reasoning in the same sex marriage decision (Obergefell v. Hodges) leads to the possibility that “future generations could read the language to include polyamory or plural marriage” it may be useful to look at some of the pluses and minuses. Says Baude,
“To be sure, there are many potentially sound legal arguments against plural marriage. It might be administratively difficult to modify some of our marital laws, currently designed for pairs of people, to handle large numbers of spouses. And if one thinks the well-being of children can justify restricting marriage rights, it is possible that plural marriages could present difficulties. On the other hand, it may turn out that plural marriages are very good for children, because more adults are available to share the physical, financial and emotional demands of caring for them.”

But let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Polyamory, polygamy, or whatever you want to call it, increases the number of naked bodies you’re legitimately going to be allowed to see and touch, whatever your sex or sexual orientation. The increased population of sexual partners is going to increase your chances for getting laid. It’s simple math. If you marry one person he or she can say no. But is it likely that all five of your husbands and wives will feel the same way by the time you’re ready for bed? Then there’s the question of shopping. Depending on whether you live in a matriarchy, patriarchy or transarchy someone is going to have to play the role once part of the job description for the average American wife. But let’s say you’re a matriarch with five husbands. Despite the fact that all five of your husbands may be involved in Robert Bly’s “mythopoetic” male self-actualization seminars, you can still divide up the dirty work with husband A getting the milk, husband B, the head of lettuce etc. If you have a fight with one of your wives, you still can cry on the shoulders of the other four. The advantages go on and on. Everyone takes on a serious juridical expression when the question of polygamy comes up and few people want to say it. But once the court rules in favor of polygamy, hubba hubba, let the games begin.

Artist Shot Dead While Working On Oakland Anti-Violence Mural

SAN FRANCISCO — An artist was shot to death Tuesday while working on a public mural in Oakland, California, sponsored by a group trying to reduce violence in the troubled and changing neighborhood.

An argument broke out between the artist and shooter beneath a highway overpass around 10:30 a.m. as the artist worked on a painting called “Self as Superhero,” authorities said. The work had been designed as a collaboration between West Oakland middle school students and area muralists. Students were scheduled to work with artists at the site on Wednesday.

The gunman fled after the shooting and remained at large. The victim’s name wasn’t released, but police described him in a statement as an adult man. Police didn’t release a description of the shooter.

“All they were doing was painting, trying to beautify a neighborhood that has seen its challenges,” Oakland police Lt. Roland Holmgren told the Oakland Tribune.

The shooting took place in West Oakland, beneath Interstate 580 on West Street. Violent crime in the area historically has been above average. Recently, the neighborhood has experienced rapid changes from gentrification.

Oakland has had 71 homicides in 2015, compared with 56 at this point in in 2014.

Plans called for a 4,000-square foot mural. Portions that are in progress show children on an a tree-lined street of homes. according to the Oakland Tribune. It’s supposed to be the third in a series of six murals by the Attitudinal Healing Connection.

“The murals serve as a constant reminder of the importance of dreaming big,” says a description on a fundraising site. “Its long-term impact on our youth and community is something Oakland can celebrate.”

The online fundraising campaign underway before the shooting sought to raise $ 10,000 for supplies and some compensation for the artists working with the middle schoolers.

There is Nothing Dead in This Grandiose Former Funeral Establishment of the City of Paris.

2015-09-27-1443379118-5206737-104mainpix.JPG

Art Galore.

The 104, as it is called, spelled out in French as Le Centquatre-Paris, is a multimedia art center partly funded by the city of Paris. Located in a vast compound of gigantic halls and structures, it houses dance floors, exhibit halls, stores, libraries, workshop classes and stages. Calling itself an artistic and cultural factory, the place is geared towards public service — Art as a public service is definitely a great concept!

On any given day a buzz of artists, dancers, yogis, actors, painters, sculptors, fill the cavernous space with laughter and life. Visitors pop up at the arts library, shoppers stroll through the Emmaus thrifstore. It’s at the same time neighborhoods hang-out for young skaters, and an elite art space for openings and happenings.

Its success is real and tangible. You can witness art in various forms glow right under your eyes, and see how art really is a street expression in its best form. Over 60 percent of the performing artists at the 104 are not French.

2015-09-27-1443380423-538875-104logo.png

The fall schedule of exhibition is heavy with many new shows coming up: dance performances, visual arts, circus acts, theater and music fests. Solo acts or ensemble pieces, no matter what month you are able to go, several art forms will be on display or happening, including a ball in April open to all. About 50 artists in residence are planned to offer their creations for the 2015-2016 season.

An official opening was held Sept. 26 to present the 25,000 square feet of available galleries and open spaces to the public for the new season. On Oct. 3, a Nuit Blanche (White Night) is planned, when the space will stay open all night. The calendar is so full of events that it would be impossible to see and hear everything offered to each senses.

Les Pompes-Funèbres : From Death to Life.

Located on the site of a former municipal undertaker, the name comes from the original entrance’s address, at 104 rue d’Aubervilliers. This was not the mom and pop funeral home where one would visit one deceased family member in a flower-filled room and weep. This was where hundreds of horse-drawn hearses used to park and be maintained. Now an artistic factory, it churns out events and gatherings at a vertiginous speed.

The buildings were erected in 1873 by the diocese, ruled by religious staff; later on, with the separation of state and church, the city created in 1905 the Service municipal des pompes funèbres (Municipal Service of Funeral Process), considered at the times as a liberal progress, as it meant that from then on, regardless of religion or condition, everyone was due a proper funeral.

Before that, divorced women, suicide victims, atheists, all were to be buried at night without any dignified ceremony or family members present. The municipal monopole was taking care of everything, from coffins to hearses, from porters to cemeteries. One of the important rituals after a death was to wrap the front door of the building where the deceased laid with massive black curtains on each side of the front door – those were called the pompes.

This black veil was used until the 1980s. The Municipal Monopole was still in practice until the middle of 1997. Since then, the ceremonial is now left to family and private companies.

2015-09-27-1443379187-2043800-104hearse.jpg

At the Pompes Funèbres, 27,000 hearses were in use, with a staff of 1,400, only forty of which were women. Carpenters, wood workers, steel workers, mechanics, auto body specialists, seamstresses, cooks for the on-site workers’ cafeteria. Civil servants, horse caterers and other employees were lodged on the premises. There was even a football team, musicians, and firefighters dedicated to the ensemble of constructions. The funeral parlor did not handle corpses – that was done in private parlors. Except in times of war, when the bodies of soldiers were given back to their families.

Creativity at its Best.

So the place was truly always alive (pun intended) in a way, but for some 15 years when it was closed down, before the re-birth as an art center in 2008. When I last visited at the beginning of September, I saw several artists using the multi-levels center floor as a dance stage and yoga space, kids running around huge sculptures, workers having a sandwich on beach chairs, the feel of community involvement was very tangible.

2015-09-27-1443379310-119530-104weipei.jpg

At each end of the space giant art pieces jetted to the open sky – this is a place that could easily accommodate one of Louise Bourgeois giant spider sculptures. Not every art space can. An enormous funky piece made of hundreds of bicycles wheels and frames in a sculpture by Chinese Al Weiwei named “Stacked” was taking one end of the forum – representing the transportation mode of his native country, while a metal snake of rust-color boxes was being installed for the upcoming vernissage.

2015-09-27-1443379253-9869926-104sculpture.jpg

Concerts for all ages and all style are planned for the fall schedule. Several art shows will also open at the various venues encompassed in the buildings. It’s a real artistic community all housed under one roof. A glass roof that is.

The architecture is reminiscent of the former market halles (market halls) that were once famously popular in the center of the capital. Why waste beautiful edifices? The eco friendly turn-around of the classic buildings is a testament of the creativity of its new users, all artists.

Side Shows.

A food truck selling pizzas is permanently parked inside the Centquatre. The Emmaus store resales clothes and furniture pieces at very low prices, and involves members of the community to work there. Canvas beach chairs invite people to lounge at will. Several corners are meant to be used as sitting areas, or even picnic settings.

The café’s menu is full of childhood favorites, such as toasts, soft eggs, fries and milk-shakes. It is named the Café Caché (the Hidden Café). Another resting place for food is the Grand Central restaurant, the loft-like space offering traditional French dishes at a medium range price – think sausage and lentils, beef cheeks, mussels and fries, rabbit with granny smith apples, steak with Béarnaise sauce, etc..

2015-09-27-1443379498-4706031-grandcentral.jpg

The CentQuatre had a challenge — to fill the enormous spaces spread on several city blocks, and despite its sheer size, the place works — it is both a community haven and a convivial space for all. Despite being located in an untrendy area of Paris, that has not stopped Parisians of every corner to make the trip for the sake of art. Over half a million visitors/spectators came by last year. Bravo!

Kim Dickens Reveals Answers About That ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Premiere

There’s a big reason to be scared on Sunday nights, and it’s only partially because you have work on Monday.

The much-anticipated “Walking Dead” companion series, “Fear the Walking Dead,” finally premiered on AMC, and it was intense. Things got started when Nick (Frank Dillane) woke up from a drug binge to discover that a bunch of people are dead and his friend is eating them. Realizing this isn’t normal, he runs into the street, gets hit by a car and winds up in a hospital bed, a la Rick Grimes – and the series gets underway.

Image: MoviePilot/AMC

We’ve heard the companion series would be way different from “Walking Dead,” and the premiere finally showed us what that meant. While the original show has been a lot about cool zombie head shots, the “Fear” premiere focused more on the struggles of Madison Clark (Kim Dickens), a school guidance counselor who couldn’t care less about being sentimental, and her boyfriend Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis), an English teacher, as they try to blend their families in the midst of a zombie outbreak. (Great timing, y’all.)

The premiere answered a lot of questions, but it raised quite a few as well. For instance, while struggling with a zombie at the end, did Madison actually get bit? And why do Madison’s kids hate Travis so much? Plus, Travis fixes a leak and says he saved them $ 300. Would it really cost that much? If so, why didn’t we all just become plumbers?

Luckily, “Fear” actress Kim Dickens talked with The Huffington Post about the premiere to answer those questions and more:

There’s a struggle between you and a zombie at the end of the first episode. Did you actually get bit?

It doesn’t appear that my character gets bitten. That’s for sure. There’s definitely scuffling, as our characters are certainly naïve of the dangers of what exactly is going on. So we get dangerously close to them.

What’s scarier: fighting zombies or raising the teens?

I personally have not raised any teens, but I have been a teenager. I jokingly said my character’s training is that she’s been wrangling teenagers for a while.

Why do the kids hate Travis so much? He seems cool.

I don’t know if they hate him. I think it’s just sort of daily dramas that go with blending a family when you have teenagers, and there’s a new authority in the house and everyone’s adjustment to that.

Since a lot of the series focuses on Los Angeles, are we going to see health-conscious or vegan zombies?

They may have been healthy before they were zombies. But I don’t think they’re very discerning in their appetite. Or they are discerning but certainly not healthy. Our zombies are fresher because they’re less decomposed. It’s an earlier place in this outbreak. So our infected — we’re not calling them zombies or walkers, we’re calling them “infected” because that’s all we know — so they look different. They’re fresher.

Though you call them infected, on “Walking Dead” they’re called walkers. LA isn’t known for people walking a lot. Do you think that gives you an advantage?

[Laughs] Well, you know, you can get in your car, and you’re stranded in traffic, so I don’t think it’s necessarily an advantage.

Will we see any LA celebrity zombies?

Wouldn’t that be great? Or go see a zombie ruin somebody’s red carpet moment. I don’t think so. Not in the first season, at least.

Image: YouTube/MakeAGif

What is the symbol your character’s daughter Alicia gets drawn on her arm? Just a spiral?

I don’t know. That’s between her and her boyfriend’s character.

While in the hospital talking to the cops, Nick says he doesn’t even know what viscera is. Can you explain to everyone what is viscera? And can we expect more big words on the show?

[Laughs] I would imagine so. Viscera. Isn’t it parts inside the body?

Yeah, I think it’s like entrails and stuff. Speaking of that, when you guys go to the drug den there’s blood everywhere. Why don’t you call the cops at that point?

I’ve had a lot of dealings with the cops and probably wanted to get to my son first. [Madison’s] son on the show is an addict, so I think her instinct was just to try to get him on her own rather than go to the cops.

Early on, Travis repairs a leak and says it saves you $ 300. Would it really cost that much?

I don’t know. You’re gonna have to talk with the writers because that seems kind of pricey.

If the zombies don’t scare ya, the repair bills sure will.

“Fear the Walking Dead” airs Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on AMC.

‘Archie’ Cartoonist Tom Moore Dead At 86

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Tom Moore, the “Archie” cartoonist who brought to life the escapades of a freckled-face, red-haired character, has died in Texas. He was 86.

Moore, who began drawing cartoons while in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, died early Monday morning while in hospice care in his hometown of El Paso, his son Lito Bujanda-Moore told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He said his father was diagnosed with throat cancer within the past week and chose not to undergo treatment.

Moore drew Archie Andrews and his friends on and off from 1953 until he retired in the late 1980s. Annual sales of the comic regularly surpassed half a million during the 1960s, according to the El Paso Times.

“I did one comic book a month,” Moore told the newspaper in 1996. “I did everything. We always worked six months ahead. I’d be doing Christmas issues in June and beach stories with a foot of snow outside my window.”

After the war, Moore used funding available through the GI Bill to attend a school in New York for cartoonists. He studied under “Tarzan” comic strip illustrator Burne Hogarth.

Soon after, Moore signed up with Archie Comics in New York. Bob Montana created “Archie” in 1941, and Moore took over in 1953.

But by 1961, Moore couldn’t ignore the itch to be closer to the mountains of far western Texas, according to his son. He and his family moved from Long Island, New York, back to his native El Paso that year, and he later took a break from comics and worked in public relations.

“He always felt that his heart belonged at the foot of the Franklin Mountains,” Moore’s son, Lito Bujanda-Moore, told the newspaper.

Bujanda-Moore said he father loved every aspect of nature: trees, rivers, mountains and deserts. One year the family cooked their Thanksgiving meal at home, then took all of it out to the desert just east of El Paso.

“We would be able to have a great Thanksgiving dinner under the stars,” he said.

Archie Comics’ editor in chief, Victor Gorelick, who has worked at the company for more than 50 years, said Moore “was a cartoonist’s cartoonist.” He noted that Archie Comics invited Moore back to help revamp Archie’s friend, Jughead, and remained with the company until he retired.

“Tom was very funny and had a knack for putting together really great, hilarious gags and special pages when he worked at Archie,” Gorelick said. “He was probably best known here for inking our ‘Jughead’ relaunch decades ago. We’re all sad to hear this news and wish his family the very best during this time.”

Archie Comics is saddened to hear of the passing of artist Tom Moore. Our thoughts are with his family and fans.

Posted by ARCHIE COMICS on Tuesday, July 21, 2015

After retiring, Moore kept tabs on Archie — and disagreed when the comic book company decided to kill off the character.

The El Paso Museum of Art displayed some of Moore’s work and his vast comic collection about 20 years ago.

“I have enjoyed what I’ve done and I am pleased that others liked it, too,” Moore said at the time. “I think it’s such a kick that my stuff is going to be hanging at the museum. Who knew Archie would have such universal appeal?”

Along with his son, Moore and his wife of 63 years, Ruth, also raised a daughter, Holly Mathew.

Bujanda-Moore said there will be a celebration of his father’s life in coming weeks.

‘Walking Dead’ Zombie Trainer Reveals How To Walk The Undead Walk

Something is eating Theresa Beyer: Too many zombie applicants are brain dead about how to walk the walk.

“You see a lot of bad zombies,” Beyer told The Huffington Post.

She should know. Beyer is the vice president of promotions for AMC, the network home of the popular zombie show “The Walking Dead,” and part of her job is job is training actors to be zombies at promotional events like the San Diego Comic-Con.

A dozen or so “undeadheads” will be shambling around the AMC “Walking Dead” installation. Beyer has spent the better part of the last week casting and training them.

Of most importance, Beyer said, is the walk.

“If someone’s dead, you don’t have muscle structure so you can’t do the [stiff-armed] Frankenstein thing,” she said. “You have to loosen up. Your spine gets kind of serpentine and your mouth gets a little [slack-jawed]. You have to kind of drag your foot as well.”

Beyer said her team has to go look at a lot of wannabe “walkers” before narrowing it down to the chosen few.

“It’s always difficult. Even if people have had experience in horror, this is different,” Beyer said. “We want to make sure [the zombies] can take direction, lose that muscle structure and be as realistic as they are on ‘The Walking Dead.'”

But even the best zombie actors might not get hired if they lack certain other physical attributes.

“We look for height. We want them tall and as bony as possible,” Beyer said. “We look for no facial hair because ‘walkers’ facial hair starts to fall out [after death] and get super super thin.”

Beyer said only freshly-killed “walkers” would have a full beard.

Beyer won’t reveal the going price for a zombie actor, but the potential payoff could be big for the ones who really stick out.

“There have been times when zombies I’ve hired for a promotion have impressed the producers enough that they were cast on the show,” she said.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
