Three Victims of Deadly Hostage Shooting at a California Veterans Home Identified

The names of the three female victims of Friday’s deadly shooting at a Veterans home in Napa County, California, have been released by the coroner’s office.

Christine Loeber, 48, Dr. Jennifer Golick, 42, and Dr. Jennifer Gonzales, 29, were killed after an armed gunman entered a staff meeting at Yountville Veterans Home campus in Yountville — the largest veterans home in the country — and took hostages, CNN reported.

June Iljana, a spokesperson for the California Department of Veterans Affairs, confirmed to PEOPLE that all three women were staff of the Pathway Home, a non-profit at the Yountville Veterans Home. The facility provides mental health and case management services for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Iljana said.

Loeber was the Pathway Home’s executive director, while Golick and Gonzales were both psychologists — Golick a staff psychologist and Gonzales a clinical psychologist with the San Francisco Department of Veterans’ Affairs Healthcare System, ABC-7 reported.

“These brave women were accomplished professionals who dedicated their careers to serving our nation’s veterans, working closely with those in the greatest need of attention after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan,” The Pathway Home said in a statement to ABC-7 reported. “All of us at The Pathway Home are devastated by today’s events. We stand with the families, friends, and colleagues who share in this terrible loss.”

The gunman, who has been identified at Albert Wong, 36, was a former patient who had been treated at the Pathway Home, USA Today reported.

Shots from a rifle were first fired at about 10:20 a.m. in the dining room of the veterans home where Pathway employees were having cake for a going-away party for their coworkers leaving the job, CNN reported. The gunman took several hostages into one room before letting all but three escape.

After an 8-hour long standoff with police, he killed himself and three hostages, KCRA reported. Law enforcement officials found the bodies of three women and the gunman in a room inside the property.

Days before the shooting, Wong been asked to leave the program for unknown reasons, State Sen. Bill Dodd told the San Francisco Chronicle.

California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Chris Childs told the Associated Press it was “too early to say if were chosen at random.”

According to Napa County Sheriff John Robertson, police had “tried numerous times” to reach the Wong via his personal cell phone and the phones within the facility but could not reach him, The Mercury News reported.

Larry Kamer told the wire that his wife, Devereaux Smith was at a staff party and said the gunman had entered the facility and allowed multiple people to leave before taking others hostage.

The Pathway Home has helped more than 450 veterans cope with the effects of their deployments since opening its doors in 2008, its website states. The facility has a staff of 18 people.

One of it’s graduates, Adam Schumann, was the subject of the book, Thank You For Your Service, according to the home’s website. It was turned into a 2017 film starring actor Miles Teller.

California Governor Jerry Brown issued a statement after the shootings, saying, “Anne and I are deeply saddened by the horrible violence at the Yountville Veterans Home, which tragically took the lives of three people dedicated to serving our veterans. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones and the entire community of Yountville.”

He ordered flags at the capitol to be flown at half-staff in memory of the women, USA Today reported.

Never Heard Of ‘Dry Drowning?’ What You Need To Know About The Deadly Condition

The Question: Dry drowning was recently ruled as the suspected cause of death for a 4-year-old boy from Texas. What is this medical condition and what are the signs that someone might be suffering from it?

The Answer: We don’t yet know what happened in the tragic case of the child in Texas, but drowning is an issue of heightened concern in the summer.

About 3,500 people die per year in the U.S. due to unintentional drowning. One in five of those deaths is a child under the age of 14. And there’s a large disparity by race: African-American children between the ages of 5-19 are 5.5 times as likely to drown in swimming pools than their white peers.

But to understand any of the terminology about drowning ― and it is confusing ― it’s important to understand what happens when someone drowns.

“Wet drowning,” which is drowning while submerged under water, is what most people think of when they hear the word “drowning.” This refers to when a spasm in the larynx ― a muscular organ in the throat  ― occurs and relaxes the opening to the throat’s airway, allowing water to enter the lungs.

In the event of dry drowning, on the other hand, a laryngeal spasm also occurs, but the muscle at the top of the airway doesn’t completely relax, and so less water enters the lungs, according to Dr. Wassam Rahman, medical director of the emergency center at Johns Hopkin’s All Children’s Hospital.

There’s no clinical difference in the outcome of wet versus dry, Rahman says. In both cases, without medical intervention, death is quick: The laryngeal spasm makes it hard to breathe and oxygen is cut off from the brain. Usually an autopsy determines if a death was wet or dry ― and one can quickly die in a body of water, or shortly after getting out of it, by dry drowning.

But there’s an additional danger with dry drowning ― it could lead to “secondary drowning,” a deadly and hard to spot condition if you don’t know what to look for.

“Suppose a child ducks their head and chokes on some water and is fine,” Rahman told HuffPost. “Then within 24 hours he starts to have some respiratory symptoms ― [secondary drowning] is a delayed [reaction].”

During secondary drowning, a little bit of water gets inside the lungs from say, a near-drowning experience or even something as seemingly benign as being tossed around by waves.

The only difference with secondary drowning is that in the hours following, the lungs respond to the trapped water by swelling, essentially starting to pool with the body’s own water, Rahman explained. Ultimately, the fluid in the lungs makes it hard for the body to produce oxygen. Oxygen blood levels eventually drop, which can cause a slowed heart rate and, in rare cases, cardiac arrest.

If a child develops a cough a couple of hours after swimming or submersion, or cannot catch his or her breath, something might be wrong, according to Rahman.

Chest pain, vomiting, irritability or a drop in energy in the hours after swallowing a large amount of water can also be signs of secondary drowning, according to the American Osteopathic Association.

If you see any of these signs, get medical attention immediately since patient outcome gets worse with the progression of time, Rahman notes.

And watch your kiddos when they’re in the pool or ocean: Drowning is the second most common cause of death by unintentional injury, behind car accidents, among children ages 1-4 years-old, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For every child that dies from drowning, another five go to the emergency room for nonfatal submersion injuries, according to the CDC. Nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage, including long-term learning disabilities, memory impairment and the loss of basic cognitive function.

Some of the top factors that influence drowning risk are lack of swimming ability, a lack of barriers, such as a pool fence, to prevent unsupervised water access and a lack of close supervision while swimming, according to the CDC.

You can never have too many eyes on kids when they’re playing in the water. And learning CPR is a great skill. Seconds count: The more quickly CPR is started on a drowning victim, the better the chance their outcome will improve.

‘Turn to Love’: People Post Signs of Unity at London Bridge After Deadly Terror Attack

Just hours after a terror attack in and around London Bridge killed seven and injured nearly 50 people, mourners descended on the famous structure to post messages of hope and optimism.

Video posted to Twitter showed people posting signs that stated #TurntoLove #ForLondon and #ISISwillLose #LoveWillWin at the London Bridge cordon Sunday morning.

The gesture came the morning after three attackers careened a white van into pedestrians on London Bridge, in the heart of the British capital, Sunday evening. The men then pulled knives and got out at the crowded area of Borough Market and attacked victims on the street and at pubs, Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, said in a statement.

The latest violence come less than two weeks after a deadly terror attack outside an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester killed 22 people plus the attacker, and injured approximately 116 — included children and parents waiting to pick up their kids from the concert.

The London attack occurred just one day before Grande and other stars will take the stage for the Manchester One Love benefit in Manchester, and the pop star’s manager Scooter Braun vowed that the show will go on despite the latest attack in London.

“After the events last night in London, and those in Manchester just two weeks ago, we feel a sense of responsibility to honor those lost, injured and affected,” Braun said in a statement on Twitter Sunday. “We plan to honor them with courage, bravery, and defiance in the face of fear. Today’s One Love Manchester benefit concert will not only continue, but will do so with greater purpose,” Scooter Braun wrote on Twitter Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, as the world reels from yet another tragedy, stories of ordinary citizens stepping up to help the victims have emerged.

Witnesses told of people throwing glasses, chairs and other objects at the attackers to fend them off as they stormed into a pub in Borough Market in central London, threatening to kill people during an eight minute rampage.

Others offered free places to stay or to arrange rides for people who were stranded after the attack, reports The Telegraph, noting that the response mirrors the outpouring of support after Manchester.

The Sun reports that Sainsburys, a popular supermarket chain, delivered sandwiches to emergency worker at London Bridge.

In a statement made outside Downing Street Sunday morning, Prime Minister Theresa May praised “the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from attackers.”

She also declared that “we cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are.”

Deadly Auroras? The Carrington Event Threat: Solar Superstorms and the Risk of Devastating Blackouts and Electric Grid Damage from Massive Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMD)

This comprehensive and up-to-date ebook presents the complex story behind the threat posed by massive solar storms to the electric grid. There is growing concern that a repeat of the colossal “Carrington-event” storm of 1859, or even the lesser 1921 solar storm, could wreak unprecedented havoc on America’s electric power system, potentially causing prolonged blackouts. In a worst-case scenario, some researchers believe that a giant solar storm could catastrophically damage hundreds of huge high-voltage transformers critical to the grid; since the replacement of these components could take years, unimaginable consequences are possible. Here we have compiled dozens of official documents and reports that explain the threat and explore possible measures to limit the risk. Contents: Part 1: Overview of the Threat * Part 2: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Material * Part 3: U.S. Congressional Hearings * Part 4: Department of Homeland Security Evaluation * Part 5: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Material * Part 6: Secure Grid ’11: Electrical Grid Crisis Tabletop Exercise * Part 7: Large Power Transformer Study Report * Part 8: Space Weather * Part 9: The Sun, the Earth, and Near-Earth Space: A Guide. The nation’s power grid is vulnerable to the effects of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a sudden burst of electromagnetic radiation resulting from a natural or man-made event. EMP events occur with little or no warning and can have catastrophic effects, including causing outages to major portions of the U.S. power grid possibly lasting for months or longer. Naturally occurring EMPs are produced as part of the normal cyclical activity of the sun while man-made EMPs, including Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) devices and High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP), are produced by devices designed specifically to disrupt or destroy electronic equipment or by the detonation of a nuclear device high above the earth’s atmosphere. Wedding Saves Bride And Groom From Deadly Tornado

When a tornado with 200 mph winds ripped through Mark Patterson’s Arkansas home on April 27, he and his family were spared an almost certain death due to a strange but wonderful miracle.

Instead of spending that Sunday night at home like they always do, Patterson and his fiancée were several towns away getting married.

“There’s a definite, 100 percent chance we would have been home,” Patterson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “No question about it. We wouldn’t be alive.”

Patterson and his family live just outside Mayflower, Arkansas, where the recent EF4 tornado destroyed an estimated 328 homes and killed 15 people statewide.

Luckily, their wedding took place in Roland, Arkansas, where the couple and their three kids avoided danger. And in another twist of fate, April 27 wasn’t always the date they had in mind; according to the report, Patterson says he and his fiancée first settled on April 26 but changed their minds.

Now, instead of heading off to their honeymoon in Mexico, the couple is sorting through their home’s wreckage, hoping to find important sentimental items like photographs and family heirlooms. Luckily, they already found their two dogs, Daisy and Dixie, who both managed to survive the winds.

Despite the damage, Patterson says he feels lucky and told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that when people ask him about his wedding day, he’ll have the perfect answer.

“I’ll just say it saved our lives,” he said.

Rashad Charjuan Owens, Suspect In Deadly South By Southwest Crash, Charged With Murder

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The drunken-driving suspect who police say killed two people after he smashed his car through a street barricade at the South By Southwest festival did not use his brakes and even accelerated as he approached crowds, according to an arrest warrant released Friday.

Rashad Charjuan Owens was charged with one count of capital murder, though additional charges can be added later. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo has said Owens intentionally steered toward pedestrians early Thursday in hopes of escaping an officer who was trying to pull him over. Acevedo has suggested Owens could face two capital murder charges and as many as 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle. The 21-year-old from Killeen, about 70 miles north of Austin, remains in police custody after a district court judge set his bail at $ 3 million. Jail records did not list an attorney for him.

According to the arrest warrant, Owens told police that he “got scared” when he saw police lights behind him around 12:30 a.m. Thursday because outstanding warrants meant he could go to prison for five years. Owens told police he’s facing old kidnapping warrants issued as part of a custody battle over his daughter.

A breath test indicated Owens’ blood-alcohol content was .114, exceeding the legal limit of .08, the arrest warrant released Friday says.

The officer who tried to stop Owens was looking for suspected drunken drivers when he spotted a 2012 gray Honda Civic that didn’t have its headlights turned on, the arrest warrant says. Owens then made a turn from a middle lane and “would have caused a crash” with the police cruiser had the officer not turned to avoid it, according to the warrant.

Investigators say Owens then cut through a gas station and sped the wrong way down a one-way street before crashing through police barriers blocking a street closed for South By Southwest festivities — forcing another police officer manning the roadblock on foot to dive out of the way.

Police say Owens then plowed into a crowd of concertgoers, hitting and killing a man from the Netherlands on a bicycle and an Austin woman on a moped. Investigators say he eventually crashed into a taxi and parked van and tried to run before police subdued him with a stun gun.

The warrant says a video from the police unit giving chase “shows the Honda accelerating into crowds, not simply crowded areas but crowds of people who are hit by the car and flung into the air.” It adds that Owens drove “for almost three city blocks, accelerating into crowds and does not use his brakes, as in the video there are no brake lights visible from the rear of the Honda.”

Court records indicate that Owens pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Fairbanks, Alaska, in October 2011, when he was 19. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but that was later dismissed.

Owens also faced 2012 charges in Alaska of criminal mischief, and a warrant was issued for him after he failed to appear in court. In 2010, meanwhile, he was arrested in Texas by Killeen Independent School District police for criminal trespassing and pleaded guilty.
