Joely Fisher: I Knew Debbie Reynolds Wouldn’t Survive If Carrie Didn’t

Joely Fisher opened up about the heartbreaking last moments at her famous half-sister Carrie Fisher’s hospital bedside, revealing a hunch she had about the late actress’ mother, Debbie Reynolds.

“I knew that if Carrie wasn’t going to survive this that Debbie would not,” she said in an interview with ABC News this week. “She would not last without her on the planet. She wouldn’t, and she didn’t.”

The “Star Wars” heroine died on Dec. 27, 2016, days after suffering a heart attack onboard a flight bound for Los Angeles. Reynolds, a Hollywood icon, died just one day later following a stroke.

“I’ve been having an out-of-body experience,” Joely said about the tragic loss. “The world lost Carrie and Debbie … and we lost our hero.”

Joely and her younger sister, Tricia, share a father, Eddie, with their well-known older half-sister. The two women told ABC’s Chris Connelly that Carrie was extremely generous and sensitive.

“She was the coolest big sister in the world,” Tricia, 48, said. “She was a badass body gun-toting princess. Who has that?”

Joely says she shared a final conversation with her late half-sister via text message the night before Carrie boarded the flight where she would suffer a fateful heart attack.

“We talked about age because she was floored that she just turned 60. We talked about children. We talked about our frail mothers,” Joely, 49, said. “And I promised to see her for Christmas.”

Joely kept her promise, though under tragic circumstances. She visited the beloved actress and mental health advocate in the hospital over the holiday.

“I remember just holding [Carrie’s] hand and telling her that we were there,” Joely said. “That we would make sure that her daughter was whole, which she will be.”

Joely described Carrie’s 24-year-old daughter Billie Lourd as “soulful” and “smart.”

“She was obviously rattled to the core,” Tricia said of Lourd. “But she’s handling it.”

The Legacy of Debbie Reynolds

Artistic gifts aside, Debbie Reynolds made it her mission to help preserve Hollywood history by collecting iconic costumes.
The multitasking actress died Wednesday at the age of 84 in Los Angeles.
Deborah Nadoolman Landis, director of The David C. Copley Center for Costume Design at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, said she suffered from whiplash while reading the tags walking down the aisles of Reynolds’ San Luis Obispo storage facility. “Anyone would,” she wrote in an e-mail, singling out Cecil Beaton’s “Ascot Dress” for Audrey Hepburn in “My Fair Lady” and Irene Sharaff’s gold gown for Barbra Streisand in “Hello Dolly” as examples.
Further building her case, Landis noted designs worn by Greta Garbo in “Anna Karenina,” Norma Shearer in the 1937 film version of “Marie Antoinette,” Joan Crawford in “Mildred Pierce,” Donna Reed in “It’s A Wonderful Life,” Gene Kelly in “Singing’ in the Rain,” and Marilyn Monroe in “Bus Stop” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”
Landis referred to how Reynolds once sat on her sofa and cried after her dreams of a costume center had been crushed by a series of setbacks. “To her lifelong frustration and disappointment she received little respect from our industry (and Los Angeles) for this valiant

Debbie Reynolds And Carrie Fisher Will Be Buried Together In Joint Funeral Service

Mother-daughter duo Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher will be buried in a joint funeral service together at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills, the Associated Press reports.

No date has been set for the private service, but a large public memorial is also being considered. The pair will rest nearby a number of other actors and celebrities, including Lucille Ball, Bette Davis and Liberace.

After experiencing a heart attack onboard a plane, Fisher died Tuesday at age 60. Just one day later, after helping arrange plans for her daughter’s funeral with son Todd Fisher, Reynolds was rushed to the hospital and died of a stroke at age 84

“She wanted to be with Carrie,” Todd told Variety.

A star of old Hollywood, Reynolds’ most notable film appearance is in 1952’s “Singin’ in the Rain,” although she remained in the tabloids for years thanks to continued screen appearances and famous friendships. Her marriage to singer Eddie Fisher produced two children, who both followed in their parents’ showbiz footsteps.

But the mother and daughter seemed to have a particular connection.

A photo by Lawrence Schiller showing a 6-year-old Fisher watching her mother perform seemed to perfectly depict the pair, and was shared widely following news of their deaths.

Their relationship was not always so easy, though ― mother and daughter were often estranged for long periods of time.

Having been raised with all the glitz, glamour, cameras and spotlights of her famous parents, Fisher began experimenting with party drugs in her teenage years, and pursuing an acting career for herself meant she would only be leaning further into the Hollywood scene. Later, a bipolar diagnosis would provide another hurdle to her well-being.

Fisher’s big break came with the first “Star Wars” installment in 1977, released when she was 20. At age 28, she went to rehab for drug abuse; around that time she was also diagnosed with her mental health condition. Fisher translated her memories of this tumultuous time into the loosely biographical Postcards from the Edge, which she later adapted into a movie starring Meryl Streep.

Fisher was a staunch and candid advocate for mental healthcare, along with her mother. But Reynolds has admitted that her daughter’s disorder, and struggle with drugs, took a hefty toll. At one point, they didn’t speak for about a decade.

After decades of turmoil, however, the two seemed to become closer than ever in their final years.

“I would say that Carrie and I have finally found happiness. I admire her strength in survival,” Reynolds told Oprah Winfrey in a 2011 interview largely about her relationship with her daughter.

“I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears, but she was worth it,” Reynolds said.

“There’s very few women from her generation who worked like that, who just kept a career going all her life, and raised children, and had horrible relationships, and lost all her money, and got it back again,” Fisher told NPR’s Terry Gross in November. (Reynolds’ three marriages ended contentiously; she declared bankruptcy in 1997 after a casino investment failed.)

“I mean, she’s had an amazing life, and she’s someone to admire.”

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds’ Family Considering a Joint Funeral, Todd Fisher Says

The family of Debbie Reynolds and her daughter Carrie Fisher are reportedly considering a joint funeral for the late stars, according to Todd Fisher, Reynolds’ son.

TMZ reported the Hollywood icon’s family members are leaning toward a dual service for the mother/daughter team, with a private, small ceremony staged before a larger memorial service.

“That is my preference,” Reynolds’ son Fisher, 58, told E! of the joint plans. “Obviously it’s not finalized, but I think that sounds like a grand idea given the beautiful story between them.”

Todd explained that while there is currently no date and no confirmed location for the mother-daughter funeral and memorial, plans are in process, ABC News reported.

Carrie, 60, was aboard an 11-hour flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday when she went into cardiac arrest. She later died Tuesday in the hospital.

Reynolds died a day later at the age of 84. According to reports, she was only thinking about daughter Carrie in her final moments. Todd said she told him hours before she was rushed to the hospital: “I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie,” according to TMZ.

After their deaths, Todd tweeted a touching drawing of his mother and sister — writing, “This is a beautiful love story to witness in my 58 years. I miss them both so much. Love is everlasting.”

In addition to Todd, both are survived Carrie’s daughter Billie Lourd, 24.

Debbie Reynolds’ Last Words Show The Power Of A Mother’s Love

It seems that the loss of her daughter may have been too heavy a burden for Debbie Reynolds to bear.

The 84-year-old Hollywood icon died after suffering a stroke Wednesday, just one day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher, was pronounced dead following a heart attack.

But it’s her final words that show just how much the “Singin’ in the Rain” star loved and missed her daughter.

Todd Fisher, Reynolds’ son, told TMZ that he and Reynolds were planning Carrie Fisher’s funeral Wednesday morning when she began grieving and told him, “I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie.”

Fisher confirmed Reynolds’ last words to E! News saying, “She went to be with Carrie. In fact, those were the last words she spoke this morning.”

After news broke of Carrie Fisher’s death on Tuesday, Reynolds thanked her daughter’s fans on Facebook for their thoughts and prayers.

Reynold’s would also often share vintage photos of her children on Facebook, giving the world a peek into their lives as Hollywood fixtures.

More recent posts promoted the release of “Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds,” a documentary about Reynolds, her children and their lives in show business through the decades, which will air on HBO in March.

While Reynolds’ love for her children was expressed in her last words, she could rest assured that her daughter felt the same way.

Mother and I live next door to each other, separated by one daunting hill,” Carrie Fisher explained in the upcoming documentary, as quoted by Deadline.

“I usually come to her,” Fisher added. “I always come to her.”

Shepard Fairey and Debbie Harry Join Forces for Obey

Two of pop culture’s intrepid forces — Shepard Fairey and Blondie’s Debbie Harry are polishing up a collaboration for the artist’s Obey clothing label next fall.
Forty years to the day that Blondie made its debut at CBGB’s in the East Village, the draw for her indelible style remains intact. Fairey has described Blondie as one of his all-time favorite bands since he discovered them as a kid on pop radio. That interest only intensified as he got into punk and learned more about Blondie’s evolution from the CBGB’s scene with bands like The Ramones, and Talking Heads. Along with always appreciating Blondie’s “stylistic diversity, tackling genres such as rock, girl group, soul, disco, hip-hop and reggae, Fairey has described Harry as “an amazing vocalist, lyricist, style icon, beauty and embodiment of NYC cool.”
“Really excited” about what’s in store for the upcoming Harry-infused special-edition women’s line, Fairey said late last week, “I’ve been a Blondie fan my whole life and have collaborated with them in the past, which has been a dream come true. But working with Debbie on this project has been totally inspiring,” Fairey said. “She’s been very involved and hands-on for the whole process, just another display of her

Remembering Debbie Ford: Author Shares Major Lesson Learned From Cancer (VIDEO)

When the late Debbie Ford was diagnosed with cancer, she kept it a guarded secret for 11 years. In 2012, the Courage author revealed her diagnosis on an episode of OWN’s “Super Soul Sunday,” telling Oprah that she spent a long time in denial — even after doctors removed a five-pound tumor from her body.

Ford finally came to terms with her diagnosis and began to understand that she knew nothing of true courage until she battled cancer.

“What I would say to anybody facing any life challenge or disease is that that is courage — to choose life, to keep looking at what’s good,” Ford said

For Ford, having a supportive friend made a big difference in her outlook. “Cheryl Richardson used to send me texts every day, ‘Just believe that I believe,'” Ford told Oprah. “I would call her crying, ‘I lost my faith.'”

Even in the darkest moments, Ford found that courage could emerge. “We just have to make it a choice. We have to choose faith even if we don’t feel it,” Ford says. “Or hold on to a friend who has faith.”

“What was your lowest moment?” Oprah asked.

“When I got home from the hospital,” Ford answers. “Still, I didn’t know that they were thinking I was going to die. I thought I was just going to live and have no energy.”

For those who don’t understand what it’s like to live with disease, Ford attempted to explain the feeling. “Empty. It felt so lost, like, ‘Why am I here? Why do I want to be here? What am I doing?'” she said. “It just felt like I didn’t belong anymore.”

By making a conscious choice to fight, Ford found her courage and refused to give up. She found strength in her supportive loved ones, kept a “gratitude journal” to remind herself about the good things in life and made the most of every moment she had.

A year after her interview with Oprah aired, Ford passed away on Feb. 17, 2013 at her home in San Diego, lovingly surrounded by friends and family.

“God never gives us more than we can handle. Everything that comes our way is coming our way so that we can grow and evolve. If we look at it like that and we’re willing to open our hearts and see where we’re shut down, where we’re trying to resist life, then we have a great opportunity to step into who we always wanted to be.”

— Debbie Ford

Debbie Wasserman Schultz On Bill Maher’s Obamacare Lie Claim: ‘Let Me Knock That Down Right Away’

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) denounced the notion that President Barack Obama had lied about Americans’ ability to maintain their health insurance under Obamacare.

In a Friday appearance on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Wasserman Schultz batted down Maher’s suggestion that “the ship has sailed” on Obama’s “credibility.”

“It was not a lie, let’s just be very clear,” Wasserman Schultz said. “So let me knock that down right away. When the president and myself and every other Democrat that talked about that if you like your health care, you can keep it, that was referring to the overwhelming majority of Americans who had health care.”

During his Wednesday speech in Boston, Obama attempted to clarify the controversy surrounding a wave of cancellation notices received by employees of small businesses and individuals purchasing their own plans. The president argued that “you’re going to get a better deal.”

“If you’re getting one of these letters, just shop around in the new market place,” he said. “That’s what it’s for.”

Maher worked off that point, questioning whether the issue for Americans was one of truth over quality of the plans. Wasserman Schultz responded that the lie debate was “arguing over minutiae” — a point that Maher fired back at in disagreement.

“To a lot of Americans, it’s not minutiae and I think they’re insulted when you say that because they think it’s something important when the president doesn’t square up with them,” Maher said.
