Independents’ Day: Canada’s Harry Rosen Has Owned the Men’s Market for Decades

TORONTO — Harry Rosen has a lock on the Canadian men’s wear market, but that hold hasn’t come without a lot of hard work.
The company was founded in 1954 by Harry and his brother Lou Rosen in a small storefront in Toronto to provide made-to-measure suits for men. The firm has since grown into a 300 million Canadian dollar ($ 228.3 million), 18-store chain with locations in the seven largest cities around the country and some 1,000 employees.
Although Harry stepped back from the day-to-day operation of the business in 2005, he still serves as an ambassador, often stopping by one of the stores to chat with customers. But he left the company in good hands: as chief executive officer since 2000, his son Larry Rosen has built on his father’s legacy. Waiting in the wings is Ian Rosen, Larry’s son, who is joining the family business this summer to oversee its digital marketing initiatives, and at the same time, ensure the eventual transition to the next generation will be seamless.
But Harry Rosen has also branched out beyond its core business, teaming up with Ermenegildo Zegna to open flagship stores for the luxury Italian label in Canada. In August, a 3,000-square-foot Zegna

Decades’ Cameron Silver Marks a New Era

If clothes could talk, those worn by Cameron Silver would have quite the stories to tell.
The founder of Hollywood vintage retailer Decades, Silver has spent nearly four decades buying and curating his wardrobe, which contains more than 1,000 items, 300 to 400 pairs of shoes, 100 tuxedos and 100 pairs of jeans. Now he’s divesting himself of some 400 pieces from his collection of avant garde and vintage fashion.
Silver championed men’s fashion before men’s wear was fashionable. “I’ve seen how men’s fashion has become so much more socially acceptable,” he said. “For a man to have a sense of style is almost a requirement for success. I bought with the intention of looking at fashion as a way of life. I’d buy from a collection the best pieces that showed the social commentary of the times.”
Silver bought with abandon. “I acquired an obscenely large amount of clothing,” he admitted. “I doubt that there are many men’s collections that are this vast or extreme. It’s a very eclectic style.”
The sale of Silver’s cache began Monday at Decades. “In June, we’ll curate something specific for Grailed.com, a pre-owned men’s wear site selling luxury brands. The hero pieces and most avant-garde pieces will

Gap Flashes Back Nearly 50 Years, and Decades In Between, for Collection

Ah, memories.
Gap Inc. will launch Archive Reissue — Logo Remix, a collection for men and women that includes T-shirts, sweatshirts and rugby shirts, designed with logos from across the decades of the brand, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019. Logo Remix will be available at gap.com on Jan. 27 and select Gap stores globally beginning Jan. 29.
A limited-edition Logo Remix capsule featuring 30 one-of-a-kind items, made by deconstructing and reworking vintage Gap logo sweatshirts and T-shirts from the brand’s archives, was assembled by hand at Gap’s New York design studio.
A Logo Remix film is populated by a cast of  global talent that’s creating culture on their own terms through music, acting, comedy and activism. “They’re the world’s leading culture remixers,” said Craig Brommers, Gap’s chief marketing officer. “Gap is always one to celebrate and bring culture to the mainstream.”
The group, which includes Awkwafina, Bria Vinaite, Connor Franta, Maya Jama, Metro Boomin, Miles Heizer, Naomi Watanabe, Sabrina Claudio and SZA, will appear in a 30-second version of the film that will air on Sunday during the Grammy Awards.
If the music for the film sounds familiar, it’s Eighties anthem “Hold Me Now,” by the Thompson Twins, remixed by Boomin, who updated the original with his signature 808 beat, making it relevant to today’s hip-hop culture.

Parke & Ronen Fetes Two Decades

NEW YORK — It all started in 1993 when Parke Lutter and Ronen Jehezkel met under a disco ball at the Sound Factory nightclub here. Four years later, the duo joined forces to create Parke & Ronen, and eventually transformed their brand into a successful label in the men’s fashion swimwear market.
To mark their two decades in business, the designers will unveil a special 20th anniversary capsule of some of their signature pieces during their spring show at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Skylight Clarkson Square for New York Fashion Week: Men’s.
But while the brand has built its business on colorful men’s swim and casualwear, it actually started out quite differently.
The Israeli-born Jehezkel arrived in New York in 1991 after graduating from the Istituto Europeo Di Design school in Rome with a degree in haute couture design and starting making unisex vests that he sold at street fairs around New York. Lutter, a design student at The New School’s Parsons School of Design, started interning for him in 1995 and by the next year, they collaborated on a collection of contemporary women’s party dresses.
They showed that line at the Boutique show in New York and then took a space of their own
