Bonobos Signs First Designer Collab With Thaddeus O’Neil

Bonobos has launched its first designer collaboration.
The digital brand, which was acquired by Walmart last year for $ 310 million, has tapped Thaddeus O’Neil for an upscale, casually skewed assortment of men’s wear that made its debut on its web site and in two of its Guideshop stores on Thursday.
The Bonobos x Thaddeus O’Neil collaboration was inspired by the work of American architect Buckminster Fuller and offers T-shirts, cabana shirts, swimwear, casual pants and shorts, sweaters, outerwear, swimwear, knitwear and accessories. Prices range from $ 78 to $ 348.
Katie Boiano, vice president of design for Bonobos, said about a year ago, the company decided it wanted to partner with a designer “and Thaddeus was a natural fit based on his personal style and aesthetic.” Bonobos was especially drawn to the “vibrant colors and easygoing styles” that are hallmarks of O’Neil’s collection.
Thaddeus O’Neil grew up surfing on Long Island and was a member of the CFDA Incubator program. He designs a unisex line that he describes as “playwear” — looks that are bohemian, beachy and inspired by surf culture. The Bonobos assortment pays homage to the ocean, the earth and wildlife.

The collection launched at Bonobos on Thursday.

Although O’Neil has a small business, that wasn’t

What Happens When a Fashion Designer Becomes a Critic?

As a fashion designer, Recho Omondi used to think that keeping her head down, toiling away in her studio and not offering her opinion was enough — but then she realized it wasn’t.
“Historically there has been this notion that designers shouldn’t talk, and I subscribed to that a little bit, but those rules don’t work,” said Omondi, who is Kenyan-American and grew up in the Midwest. “That integrity s–t is so out of the window. It’s not that I am selling out, but I have a point of view and I’m over it.”
Omondi, who graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011 and held pattern making and design stints at brands including Calvin Klein, The Gap and Suno before launching her women’s line in 2013, said she loves fashion but is over how shrouded it is in smoke and mirrors. And she’s hoping to use her podcast, The Cutting Room Floor, which debuted this week, to lift the veil on an industry she believes is riddled with misinformation.
“I felt a duty to the young people who followed me, who love this industry but they feel shut out and they don’t know how to get in,” said Omondi,

New Designer Spotlight: Retrofête

“The Retrofête girl likes to party,” designer Ohad Seroya mused of a shimmery rack of party-attire that made up the new brand’s playful debut pre-fall and fall 2018 collections. After years of sifting through vintage troves, from Chelsea Market to the street markets in Berlin and Copenhagen, and dressing friends and family in their fashionable finds, Seroya and his husband Aviad Klin decided to try their hand at designing their own vintage-inspired treasures. So evolved the duo’s passion and hobby into full-blown fashion brand, Retrofête, which takes its name from “Vintage Party.”
“She likes to have fun, pushes the envelope and takes risks. She’s an insider and trend setter,” exclaimed Ohad of the Retrofête girl, “She is ‘wow’! There are no boundaries for the Retrofête girl.”
Both the pre-fall and fall collections are filled with sparkle and shine, a majority of pieces adorned fully with their main fabric: sequins. But these aren’t your average sequin party dresses. The duo prides themselves on unexpected takes on sequins, always playing with their dimension and color. For instance, an asymmetrical red check with sequins in a check print for pre-fall, or velvet and sequin wrap dresses for fall. Whether putting on a multi-colored sequined

H&M Taps Moschino for 2018 Designer Collaboration

Moschino, who took the “cheap and chic” ethos to a literal level with a diffusion line of the same name, is getting back into the high-low game with an H&M collaboration unveiled in the wee hours of its annual Saturday night party during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The tie-up was made in a surprise reveal during the annual dance party at the Corona Yacht Club near the festival grounds, just after midnight. Designer Jeremy Scott, who presided over the star-studded party, his 12th turn at the festival, should have no trouble translating his Moschino designs into less expensive and just as cheerful versions for the Swedish fast-fashion retailer.
Every year, fashion lovers and bargain hunters alike anticipate news of H&M’s latest designer collaboration the way sports fans wait for draft day. It’s hard at this point, after 16 years of the high-low mash-ups — the first of which was with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 — to say which collaboration has been the most spot-on. The Moschino effort may just be one of the more popular, judging from the way fans have snapped up Scott’s designs since he took over as creative director in 2013.

Dior Homme Names Yoon Ahn Jewelry Designer

TWO’S COMPANY: Kim Jones will be in good company in his new role as artistic director of Dior Homme, which has appointed Yoon Ahn, a member of the designer’s inner circle, as the brand’s jewelry designer, according to an Instagram post.
Jones took to the platform on Thursday to welcome Ahn – known as Yoon – on her first day at work in Paris.

A Dior Homme spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time.
Ahn at Jones’ final men’s show for Louis Vuitton in January hinted to WWD that a big project was in the works. She was dressed in a women’s runway look from the show in a print based on an aerial view of Kenya.
Tokyo-based Ahn and her partner Verbal, a celebrated rapper in Japan and former member of M-flo, the Nineties hip-hop group, are super-connected in the fashion industry. The power couple, which has its own streetwear brand Ambush that figured among the finalists of the 2017 LVMH Prize, has appeared in campaigns for Louis Vuitton and Dr. Martens. They’ve also collaborated with brands including Colette, Sacai and A Bathing Ape. Ahn starred in A$ AP Rocky’s video “L$ D,” as well.

Judy Blame, Stylist, Jewelry Designer, Fashion Maverick Dead at 58

LONDON — The stylist, jeweler and underground club king Judy Blame has died at 58.
Known as a man of many trades, Blame ran underground clubs in London and later segued into styling where he worked with a range of talents including Boy George, Neneh Cherry, John Galliano and Kim Jones at Louis Vuitton.
He was also known for his outlandish jewelry designs made from artifacts that he dredged up from the mud of the Thames. He was a punk to his core.
Nick Knight described Blame as “always totally unique, always a champion of the underdog, always fiercely anti-fascist and anti-establishment, always inspiring, always so immensely talented and always one hundred percent brilliant. Judy, the world will be a much darker place without you, but your life’s work will continue to shine and to show this world that creativity and art are the highest forms of human achievement,” Knight added.
Blame started his career working alongside John Moore from The House of Beauty and Culture and the late photographer Rei Petri.

Meghan Markle, Amal Clooney and Cindy Crawford’s Go-To Shoe Designer Dropped Prices 50 Percent

This is a Black Friday sale that isn’t going away: Sarah Flint, the footwear designer who counts Meghan Markle, Amal Clooney and Cindy Crawford as fans, is slashing prices by 50 percent — and keeping them there.

The designer cultivated her celebrity following with stylish (and comfortable!) Italian-made shoes that can transition from day to night. Prices ranged from $ 500 to $ 1,200 when she launched the brand, but thanks to a new direction — and an investment from Cindy Crawford herself — Flint is slashing prices to $ 200 to $ 650 and taking the experience away from retailers and directly to consumers on her site sarahflint.com

“Cindy has been a fan of the brand since the beginning and has worn my shoes countless times,” Flint tells PeopleStyle. “As I got to know her, her support of the product and desire be an integral part of the brand really spoke to how much she believed in the product, and in our new business model. There’s no bigger honor than having a customer, and now investor, like Cindy Crawford believe in you.”

That means her most celeb-adored styles are now cheaper, such as the Lana flat, which is a favorite of Meghan Markle and Crawford. “It’s great for traveling,” Crawford tells PeopleStyle. “I love this shoe because it’s super comfortable yet I feel pulled together.” It’s now available for $ 365, originally it was $ 625.

Markle’s go-to flat, Flint’s Grear style, is also now slashed, available for $ 245, as opposed to its $ 525 original.

The Emma pump, which Amal Clooney and Meghan Markle own in multiple colors is also at a new price: $ 345, as opposed to its original, $ 595. “It’s a classic with the focus on subtle details that enhance the way a women looks in the shoe, without sacrificing fit and wearability,” Flint says of why it’s so popular.

Crawford predicts two more will rise in popularity soon, the Marina boot in olive, which is now $ 595, and the Andrea slide in gold, which is now $ 250. Perhaps, we even may see Crawford’s lookalike daughter Kaia in the latter soon enough. “I don’t want to ruin one of  her Christmas gift ideas, but she might just find a pair of the Andrea slides in gold under out tree,” says Crawford.

Tell us: Which of these Sarah Flint celeb-loved styles is your favorite?

MILAN — The Canali family is standing behind their 84-year-old namesake men’s wear company.
With a view to further expanding its collections, from formal to sportier looks and accessories, Canali has tapped Hyun-Wook Lee as its exclusive in-house designer.
“This is a very important step for us as it’s the first time we single out one designer to oversee all categories, and evolve the offer,” general manager Stefano Canali said Friday at the company’s showroom in Milan, ahead of the brand’s presentation on Saturday. Given Lee’s recent arrival at the company, his first collection for Canali will bow during Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June.
Born in Seoul in 1973, Lee comes to Canali with 17 years of experience in fashion, having worked at Berluti in Paris and contributed to its foray into men’s apparel. He previously worked at Ermenegildo Zegna, Versace and Gianfranco Ferré. Lee graduated in design and fine arts from the University of Chung-Ang in Seoul and has a background in art. Designer Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Husband and Brand Cofounder Divorcing

It looks like the married owners of cult favorite boutique and brand Maryam Nassir Zadeh are headed for a split.
Eponymous founder Maryam Nassir Zadeh and her husband and business partner Uday Kak, who is also a photographer, made a contested divorce filing in a local Brooklyn court late last week. Documents in the case are sealed, but a contested filing generally means there is either a dispute over child custody, assets or both.
The now-former couple shares two daughters and public profiles list Zadeh and Kak as partners in the boutique, which has a storefront in New York’s Lower East Side, along with a popular e-commerce business. There is also a Maryam Nassir Zadeh line of shoes and bags, priced roughly between $ 400 and $ 900, as well as design-forward apparel, which Zadeh designs and has expanded over the last year.
Zadeh held her second fashion show in September at the East River Track in New York, with seating on bleachers and a surprise performance by Solange Knowles. She’s been producing seasonal collections since spring 2015.

Princess Diana’s Wedding Dress Designer Is Launching a Very ’80s New Label

One of the designers behind Princess Diana’s wedding dress has a lot to be excited about in 2018.

Elizabeth Emanuel, who, with her then-husband David Emanuel, designed Diana’s 1981 gown, is set to launch a new fashion label. And she tells PEOPLE that the upcoming line, Emanuel Mayfair, will capture the energy of the 1980s and offer a dynamic twist on current trends.

Emanuel Mayfair is set to kick off in February after Emanuel received a new round of financial backing. She’s going to move into new, larger studios and is currently hiring a young and creative team, and recently appointed a CEO.

Elizabeth, whose most recent fashion label was been called Art of Being, says the new line will have the same “spirit” as her previous collections, but with a modern touch.

“It will have the spirit of Emanuel from the days when we made dresses some of the most of the most iconic women of the time like Elizabeth Taylor, Carolina Herrera and Joan Collins, but is taking it into the present,” she tells PEOPLE. “That whole period of time was wonderful but this will capture that but will also look contemporary and edgy. I’m bringing back the spirit in a new form after all these years. We will concentrate on bridal wear and evening wear – things to get dressed up in, pieces that are handcrafted and made to order.”

Emanuel, who spoke about her unique part in the life of the princess for PEOPLE’s The Story of Diana adds: “Our new studio is beautiful and is being renovated now for us to be ready in about a month.”

‘This is exciting. It shows that you if you never give up, good things happen. It is going to be a positive year.”

She hopes the first collection will emerge in July or September.

Victoria Beckham, Nina Garcia and More from the Fashion World Mourn Death of Designer Azzedine Alaïa

Some of fashion’s biggest names paid tribute to Tunisian-born couturier and shoe designer Azzedine Alaïa, who died Saturday in a Paris hospital after experiencing a bad fall 10 days prior according to a French media report in Le Point. He was 77.

Dubbed “the King of Cling,” Alaïa made a name for himself for his distinctive takes on classic silhouettes, his garments often moulding the body into remarkable and eye-catching proportions.

“I don’t cut clothes for a board,” Alaïa told PEOPLE in 1982. “The body of a woman is sublime. I follow it.”

Alaïa began his career studying sculpture at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux Arts in Tunis. He entered into fashion as a dress-maker’s assistant — eventually moving to Paris in 1957 and working for Christian Dior. He would go on to work for Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler before he broke out on his own and opened an atelier in the 1970s, dressing Hollywood stars in like Greta Garbo and Marie-Hélène de Rothschild.

It wasn’t until 1980 that he produced her first ready-to-wear collection, with couture leather-moulded pieces that would launch his name as a global brand. Over the years he would continue to make a name for himself for refusing to play by fashion’s rules, even eschewing the industry’s traditional seasonal collection calendars, which he retired from in 1992.

Still he was wildly popular with celebrities, including Kim Kardashian who often wore his designs. His last collection (and first since 2011) dropped in July, with Naomi Campbell making a rare catwalk appearance.

Victoria Beckham, Project Runway judge Nina Garcia, Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert, and Patrik Sandberg were just some of the names sharing memories of Alaïa on social media Saturday as news of his passing spread.

“A sad day. Rest in peace #azzedinealaia,” Beckham wrote on Twitter alongside a photo of Alaïa. “You were a true master and one of my biggest inspirations.”

“A fashion legend and true original. We will miss this creative genius,” Garcia said, sharing the same photo of Alaïa as Beckham.

Engelbert posted a series of photos of the two to Instagram. “Azzedine Rest in Peace, my N1 favorite,” she wrote in their caption. “My heart is broken, GENIUS #azzedinealaia @azzedinealaiaofficial. He is going to continue to make dresses for goddesses and Angels up in the sky now.”

Added Ines de la Fressange on Twitter of the 5-ft. 2-in. designer: “Small in size but huge in fashion. Farewell Azzedine Alaïa.”

Exclusive: Indian Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee Is Going Global

HONG KONG — Much like the Indian weddings he often designs for, an outfit by Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a mélange of colors, intricate patterns and delight. Over the course of 16 years since he started his namesake couture label, the Kolkata native has become feted not just for his design sensibilities, but also for utilizing near forgotten arts-and-crafts traditions from around India.
On Nov. 2, Lane Crawford department store launched an exclusive collection of 29 ready-to-wear pieces from Mukherjee, a chance to get his aesthetic but in a more pared-down silhouette, accompanied by a display of 39 of his couture pieces. It is the first proper foray into East Asia for the designer, who is starting to make more noise globally.
Last month, he debuted a spikes-meets-sari collaboration of men’s and women’s shoes designed together with his friend Christian Louboutin. This most recent collaboration with Lane Crawford, however, was inspired by a visit to China Club, the members-only social establishment set up by the late David Tang.
“This is ready-to-wear with a sense of couture, all the finishings and labor-intensive [work] that couture requires, but in much simpler silhouettes,” Mukherjee told WWD, while visiting Hong Kong.

Meet Zac Brown’s ‘Better Half’: How He and Jewelry Designer Wife Shelly Created an Inclusive Camp for Kids — Together

Zac Brown and his jewelry designer wife, Shelly, are proving they’re the definition of power couple.

In Opry Entertainment’s new YouTube series, “Better Half,” premiering exclusively on PEOPLE, the spotlight instead shines on the spouses of country superstars who are managing busy careers of their own.

“I’m so excited to be able to share my company and my passion for design with so many people,” Shelly, who is featured in the first episode of the series for her business Shelly Brown Jewelry, tells PEOPLE. “Designing is something that I’ve been doing my whole life and getting to create wearable pieces for every woman is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

From creating her own childhood jewelry to attending school for design, Shelly, 33, was able to launch her jewelry line — which includes a range of everything from statement necklaces to stackable crystal bracelets — in 2015.

“Design has always been something that has really come naturally to me,” she says in the clip. “It has been really fun to be able to bring that to the table now just the way that I did back then.”

An exciting part of the business to her is seeing celebrities like Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman and Kacey Musgraves sport her pieces.

“It’s fun to see people who have this amazing style really include our pieces in what they wear,” she says.

Whether it’s creating new jewelry pieces for her line or helping out on music videos for Zac Brown Band, Shelly keeps a “do it yourself” attitude.

“I have no idea how other people do it, but it seems like we have two days before this video is going to shoot so we have to get all this stuff together. It’s high-intensity and adrenaline,” she says, adding that some of the wardrobe items from shoots are on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame. “To see such a huge part of your life laid out in a way like that brought tears to my eyes, because there are so many memories. Just to really be able to look at how much has happened and how much has been accomplished is amazing.”

Along with running her business and raising her and Zac’s five children, Shelly also provides an incredible opportunity to other kids through the inclusive camp she created with her husband called Camp Southern Ground.

“Camp Southern Ground was Zac’s dream from the time he was 14,” she says. “Over 10 years ago, on our first date, he told me he was going to start a camp for kids.”

She continues: “Every time we would live somewhere, we would end up buying an extra piece of land like, ‘That’s going to be where the camp is going to go.’ So when we got our house that we’re in now, it was just so meant to be.”

Though Camp Southern Ground focuses on military families and children with neurological disorders, Shelly explains that they want to be able to serve everyone — and even gets emotional sharing the impact that the camp has had on these kids’ lives.

“Last summer, we had a lot of children who came to us who were on the autism spectrum,” she says. “We had one little boy in particular whose mom wrote us an email afterwards how he had never been invited to a birthday party or anything like that. he had all of these friends and went home and talked about that.”

Through the camp, Shelly is teaching her kids — son Alexander, 3, and daughters Joni, 6, Georgia, 7, Lucy, 9, and Justice, 10 — that helping others is the “most important thing” and that the “world does not revolve around” them.

As for what she’s teaching her husband, it’s “to slow down a little bit and look around.”

“But there’s nothing that he loves more than those kids and a daddy,” she says. “That’s what matters.”

The Colombian-American designer whose father operated a crocodile farm when she was a child has been making handbags from leather and exotic skins for several years, but this is her first foray into footwear and her first time selling with Moda, an online retailer that deals exclusively with high-end brands.

NEW BEGINNINGS: Amy Molyneaux, former designer of the British clothing label PPQ, is preparing to launch a collection of her own: a resort and swimwear brand called Lelloue.
Molyneaux has launched Lelloue with her business partner Helen Johnson, and the partners are taking a bold, unapologetically glamorous approach in order to stand out in an increasingly saturated resortwear market.
“With the new brand, I’m focusing on what I think is needed, where I see the gap in the market. There is a huge amount of resortwear that’s bohemian and hippie, but none that embraces this Nineties power glamour,” said Molyneaux of her debut range which includes bold maxi mesh cover-ups, leopard-print or polka dot bikinis and high-waisted pants and jumpsuits made from luxurious printed silks.

“I wanted to add gold foil printing, silk satins and pieces that have structure yet can stretch easily,” added the designer, who has previously designed lingerie or swimwear for various brands as a consultant. “I’m homing in on the skills I’ve developed in the past 20 years.”
The decision to launch resortwear was also a personal one for Molyneaux, who said she always enjoyed seeing PPQ’s young clientele wear her flowy, chiffon

Hermès to Honor Window Designer Leïla Menchari

WINDOW WORLDS: Regular passers-by of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris from across the past three decades will be familiar with the traffic-stopping, fantasy windows of Leïla Menchari for the Hermès flagship.
Paying tribute to the Tunisian designer’s love of craft and materials, the French leather goods house this fall is to dedicate a much bigger window to her work with a series of eight tableaux conceived by scenographer Nathalie Crinière in collaboration with Menchari set to go on display at the Grand Palais.
Titled “Hermès à tire-d’aile – Les mondes de Leïla Menchari,” which loosely translates as “The Hermès Worlds of Leïla Menchari,” the exhibition is set to run from Nov. 8 to Dec. 3.
A graduate of the Beaux-Arts, Menchari started working under Hermès’ former head of windows, Annie Beaumel, in the early Sixties. She took over designing the house’s windows from 1978 to 2013, working with a number of artisans from the Hermès universe and beyond, ranging from stone-cutters to sculptors, while also directing the Hermès color committee.
Windows created by Menchari have included giant waves crafted from marble, fantasy Kelly bags made out of metal, multicolored saddles with wings and a Paris-themed window with monuments in organza.

Dubai-Based Designer Rami Al Ali Considers Paris Location

TAKING FLIGHT: Syrian designer Rami Al Ali is thinking about establishing a permanent presence in Paris for his namesake label.
“Paris is an important window display for the world,” said the Dubai-based designer, who showcased his fall couture collection at the Ritz Paris hotel. Around 85 percent of his clients are from the Gulf region, he said, describing them as young jet-setters who want to stand out.
Al Ali, who usually works with neutral hues and metallics, ventured into new territory this season: dusty pink.
“Everyone was afraid it would be too girly,” he said, gesturing towards the array of structured gowns in tulle, organza and silk gazar. His inspiration came from a late 19th-century portrait of an angel by the American painter Abbott Handerson Thayer, which drew him with its mix of innocence and strength.
“The color gives lightness,” he said, lifting a heavy fold. He declined reveal what secret material sewn between the layers gave it heft. “That would be getting into the spices of the kitchen,” he said with a smile.
One bright dress brought a colorful tang to the collection. Deep crimson, it was made of the thinnest, airy silk. It was easy to see how the recurring theme of vertical

Meet the Young French Designer Dressing the Hôtel de Crillon

PARIS — One evening in 2015, Hugo Matha was having a drink at a café, telling a friend that he wanted to design uniforms. A man sitting nearby overheard the conversation and came over to ask him who he was.
They exchanged details — the other man, Jacques Oudinot, was already tapped to be the director in charge of operations of the Hôtel de Crillon, owned by the Rosewood hotelier group, whose renovation was well under way but many months away from completion. The deal was sealed not long after.
At the time, Matha was already making a name for himself in accessories, thanks to his treatment of the clutch as an objet d’art, mixing Plexiglas with exotic leathers, flexible stone or precious woods. The son of winemakers from the Aveyron region in central France, he studied women’s wear design at the Duperré school in Paris before friends convinced him to launch a brand based on the accessories he’d presented alongside his graduate collection.
Soon, a cadre of influential wearers were carrying them. Retailers were supportive: Colette stocked him from his first season and Moda Operandi selected him for a trunk show. Matha was nominated for the ANDAM awards in 2015 and 2016,

Designer Accusing Khloe Kardashian Of Copying Appears To Have Major Receipts

It’s hard to keep up with the allegations of copying facing Khloe Kardashian and her denim line, Good American. On this week’s episode, we have some receipts.

The controversy started last Friday, when fashion designer Destiney Bleu accused Kardashian on Twitter of copying designs from her line of bedazzled clothing for an upcoming Good American collection. She claimed Kardashian ordered a slew of items from her “DBleudazzled” line before similar-looking clothes appeared in an ad for Good American that Kardashian tweeted last week.

On Sunday, Bleu received a cease and desist letter from Kardashian’s attorney that denies Good American’s design team had ever seen her clothes. Now, she’s fighting back with documents that appear to show both orders of clothing billed to Kardashian and correspondence with Kardashian’s stylist and assistant.

The cease and desist called Bleu’s accusations “flagrantly false and defamatory” and detrimental to Good American and Kardashian’s business and reputation. It denies that the brand was even influenced by the DBleudazzled line of encrusted sheer bodysuits, citing bodysuit-wearing celebrities like Cher as inspiration.

“Good American’s design team had never heard your name and never saw your samples,” Kardashian’s attorney wrote to Bleu in a June 4 e-mail. “You are not the first person to ever design a mesh bodysuit with embellishments. You have neither a monopoly on nor copyrights for bodysuits, embellishments or mesh fabrications, which have been used over and over again in the fashion industry.”

Bleu’s attorney, Stephen McArthur, fired back June 8 in a letter obtained by HuffPost. It contains a timeline listing instances of correspondence dating back to October 2016 between Bleu and Kardashian’s assistant, as well as Kardashian’s former stylist Monica Rose, and includes dates for when Kardashian allegedly placed custom orders with Bleu.

The “receipts” don’t stop there. Bleu’s attorney attached invoices for three separate purchases from late 2016 through April that list Kardashian associates and “KK” as the customer.

McArthur told HuffPost that he has not yet received a response to his letter from Kardashian or Good American.

In a statement, a Good American spokeswoman told HuffPost Friday the entire controversy is “little more than a cheap publicity stunt”:

Ms. Bleu’s claim that Good American and Khloe Kardashian copied or stole her designs is flagrantly false and little more than a cheap publicity stunt and an attempt by Ms. Bleu to get her 15 minutes of fame.

Ms. Bleu did not create the concept or design of a bodysuit with crystals – a fashion style that has been around for decades as evidenced by the fact that Cher has been wearing these styles for over 25 years. The Good American design team designed a range of eleven bodysuits and had never heard of Ms. Bleu or seen her designs. The letter from her lawyer ― sent to the press for no legitimate reason –- is outrageous, defamatory and misleading in the extreme. Good American will absolutely not stand for anyone trying to damage its reputation and plans to deal with this through the proper legal channels.

Bleu’s attorney noted in his letter that “copying clothing and fashion is generally not intellectual property infringement.” Such a charge, he wrote, is not the point.

“It is not illegal for Khloe to copy Destiney’s designs — it is just tacky, disrespectful, and in bad taste. There is also something deeply uncomfortable about someone with Khloe’s wealth and power appropriating designs and fashion directly from a black woman with a small business without crediting her, making cheap knockoffs, and then attempting to threaten her into silence. You should be ashamed.”

“If Khloe wants to continue stealing designs from indie creators and mass produce them with no credit,” McArthur stated, “then Khloe will rightly face judgment in the court of public opinion.”

Remembering British Designer Gina Fratini

REMEMBERING GINA FRATINI: The British designer Gina Fratini, famous in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties for her dramatic ball gowns, has died aged 85, in London. Fratini had a long list of celebrity clients – including Princess Diana – and was best known for plying miles of silk, organza, velvet and taffeta into romantic dresses with ruffles, ribbons or soft prints. She later worked as a guest designer for Norman Hartnell.

Princess Diana wore a Fratini for Hartnell, sari-inspired white silk chiffon gown trimmed with pearlised sequins and beads for an official portrait by Terence Donovan in 1990, and then donned the dress once again for the ballet during an official visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in April 1991. That dress is currently on display as part of “Diana: Her Fashion Story,” a show of the late Princess Diana’s evolving style which is currently taking place at Kensington Palace.
Housed at the Pigott Galleries, the Kensington Palace show spans six rooms, part of the Queen’s Apartments that were built for Queen Mary II. The display includes 25 pieces ranging from the evening gowns Diana wore in

Bridget Foley’s Diary: Vuitton, Koons, ‘Mona Lisa’ and the Changing Status of the Big-Brand Designer

Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Titian and “Mona Lisa” herself — coming soon, to a handbag near you, if you happen by the Champs-Élysées, 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, or any of the 150 Louis Vuitton outposts where the brand’s new, flashy Jeff-Koons-has-his-way-with-the-Masters collaboration will be housed beginning April 28.
In a big, splashy, celebrity-laden party at the Louvre on April 11, under the gaze of Mona herself, Vuitton formally presented Koons’ collection of handbags and small leather goods, which had been on full view on the brand’s web site throughout the day. In pictures, at least, the bags look amazing. They’re a lot of fun, a little outrageous and beautiful — if your idea of beauty veers somewhere between bucolic romp and steely eyed Leonardo da Vinci diva, and whose doesn’t? They’re all marked with a little bunny charm indicating, “Koons worked here.” As for the rights to the paintings, just like “Happy Birthday” and “Hamlet,” these masterpieces fall under public domain, including the 500-year-old “most famous painting in the world,” whose legally co-opted image graces everything from refrigerator magnets and T-shirts to endless artists’ homages and satires. Still, the cost of this enterprise to Vuitton is unimaginable — and its anticipated returns,

British Designer Gareth Pugh Releases Short Film Ahead of London Fashion Week

CINEMATIC TEASER: British designer Gareth Pugh has released a cinematic teaser ahead of his fall show, which takes place during London Fashion Week. Pugh will stage a runway show at 8 p.m. in Collins Music Hall in Islington Green on Feb 18.
Filmed in black and white, the production was directed by Ruth Hogben and Andrea Gelardin, who worked with creative consultant Carson McColl.
The film — which runs in under three minutes — opens up to a phrase from William Shakespeare’s King Lear, “‘Tis the time’s plague when madmen lead the blind.” The movie features Latin American singer and songwriter Rebekah Del Rio singing “Llorando,” a Spanish-version of Roy Orbison’s “Crying” in a cappella. The “Mulholland Drive” star — wearing a fur coat — is pictured performing outdoors at an apartment complex.
Pugh said the moment was as “an iconic visual conceit, and a fitting metaphor for truth in a post-truth arena and a vision of a world on the precipice of anarchy.”
No stranger to a theatrical display, the designer’s spring show held last September took a cue from the opera. In addition, the designer unveiled more than 60 costumes on the stage of Palais Garnier in Paris.

Nicki Minaj Says ‘Racism’ Is The Reason This Designer Won’t Take Her Call

Giuseppe, what’s good?

Nicki Minaj put the acclaimed Italian luxury shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti on blast Friday after the brand’s PR people apparently refused to take Minaj’s call.

The rapper unleashed a tweetstorm about the incident, and here’s how it went down:

[Editor’s note: Minaj did wear the sneakers, though it appears she wore them for Glamour in 2011.]

The 34-year-old entertainer’s problems with Zanotti arose when she found out the designer was making capsule collections with other artists (most recently Zayn Malik and Jennifer Lopez), which would presumably give the collaborator a share of the shoe’s profits.

Minaj claimed that because she was black, she could only “inspire” Zanotti, but not partner with him:

Minaj retweeted a fan’s photo of some of the “Nicki” shoes that show up when you search for them in the designer’s collection:

Toward the end of her Twitter call-out, Minaj said she wouldn’t permit this “racism and disrespect.” She called on her fans to start Tweeting or Instagramming the hashtag #GiuseppeWhatsGood, a reference to her famous line to Miley Cyrus at the MTV Awards.

Soon enough, her #Giuseppe hashtag was trending on Twitter:

Minaj again clarified to fans that is wasn’t about the money, “just the disrespect:”

UPDATE, 3:21 p.m.:  Zanotti appears to have taken the “Nicki” shoes down from his website, which led to another round of tweets from Minaj:

The Huffington Post reached out to Minaj and Zanotti and will update this post accordingly.

New Designer Spotlight: Marina Moscone

SISTER ACT: Marina Moscone and her sister, Francesca, grew up in Vancouver and ultimately pursued different career paths: Marina in fashion and Francesca in business. Last spring, the duo came together to launch Marina Moscone, the New York-based women’s ready-to-wear label.
Marina earned a degree in fashion degree from The New School’s Parsons School of Design and started working for Total Management, where she was an agent for photographers and stylists. “I graduated Parsons during the recession, and designers weren’t being hired,” Marina said. “At Total, I met people who I work with in the industry now [as a designer]….It ended up giving me a 360-degree perspective of the fashion business.”
Two years later, Marina landed a design gig at Peter Som, eventually becoming the brand’s design director. She spent four-and-a-half years at the company before breaking out to launch her eponymous label last spring, all of it made in New York using Italian fabrics.
“We’re Italian, and we grew up a lot spending our summers in Italy, where our father is from,” Marina said of her and her sister Francesca, who focuses on business and production side of things. “For the first collection, I was thinking a lot about our girl and

Footwear Designer Beverly Feldman Talks about Theresa May’s Style Influence

MORE IS MORE: British Prime Minister Theresa May continues to draw attention in the British media for her fashion choices, ranging from her Amanda Wakeley leather trousers – which drew bitter criticism from former education secretary Nicky Morgan – to her love of over-the-top shoes. The politician’s style choices have been closely documented in the press since her appointment.
Beverly Feldman, the British accessories designer based in Alicante, Spain, is just one designer who’s been benefiting from increased media attention after May was snapped in some of her signature styles. May wears the label’s Caliente pumps, a pointed-toe, kitten heel style with crystal embellishments and contrasting panels in bold patterns, such as leopard print, fuchsia pony skin and metallic snake-effect leather.
Feldman said having a woman like May seen in her shoes has much more impact than celebrity endorsements.
“It’s true validity for the brand that a real woman in a powerful position believes in you – as opposed to a Hollywood celebrity whose choices are dependent on what their stylists have selected for them on an evening out,” said Feldman, adding that she admires May’s playful taste when it comes to accessories.
“She is already an icon for women because she became the

Interior Designer Tatum Kendrick Opens Fashion Boutique in Los Angeles

Tatum Kendrick is making a loop from fashion to interior design and back to fashion via her new boutique in Los Angeles.
On a gritty stretch between downtown and the hipster haven of Silver Lake, behind a black iron door shaped like a woman’s hourglass silhouette, the former DKNY publicist is putting the final touches on You’re So Baby before unveiling it to the public on Dec. 1. Reflecting what she dubs “the edgy, sexy, feminine point of view, rather than California cool,” which is the raison d’être of many retailers here, the 900-square-foot shop in Echo Park is decorated like an inviting apartment inhabited by a woman who assuredly mixes blush pink floors with a leopard spot couch.
In addition to vintage Cartier lighters and jewelry by Hervé Van der Straeten and Gabriela Artigas, Kendrick also offers lingerie by Bordelle and TyLynn Nguyen, fragrances from Serge Lutens and erotic wallpaper drawn by Natalie Krim. In her pursuit of exclusive fashion finds, she experiments with collaborations, like a cashmere-mohair cropped sweater designed by Grant Knits, made unique to the store with balloon sleeves and crocheted edges. SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Designer Sophie Theallet Vows Never To Work With Melania Trump

In her eight years in the White House, Michelle Obama became a sweetheart of the fashion world, beloved by designers thrilled to dress her. For at least one of those industry stars, those days are gone.

French designer Sophie Theallet vowed never to dress incoming first lady Melania Trump in an open letter posted to her Twitter account Thursday night.

Theallet, who is based in New York City and has designed collections for Lane Bryant, explained in the letter that her brand “stands against all discrimination and prejudice” and calls her runway shows, campaigns and celebrity dressings “a celebration of diversity and reflection of the world we live in.”

In that spirit, she decided not to dress Trump.

“As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady. The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by,” wrote Theallet.

Theallet called her work with Obama, someone whose “values, actions and grace” resonate with her, “a highlight and an honor.”

Obama wore and repeated Theallet’s designs over the years. One of the designs was even nearly cloned for a collection Theallet did with the Gap back in 2011.

It’s a bold move to weigh in on politics, one that Theallet said herself might not be wise. But she also called on her fellow designers to follow suit, reminding them that “integrity is our only true currency.”

Meanwhile, it’s unclear whether or not the future first lady even intends to be dressed by designers when her husband’s presidency begins in January. After all, she wore her own purchased clothing on the campaign trail. Business of Fashion recently declared “Fashion Will Learn To Love Melania Trump,” but InStyle editor-in-chief Laura Brown told the outlet her staff “have no plans” to cover Mrs. Trump.

Whatever happens in the future, this is certainly a big about-face from the last eight years.

Nasty Gal to Drop Curated Collections of Designer Vintage

VINTAGE GOLDMINE: Nasty Gal is getting back to its vintage roots. On Saturday, the retailer will drop the first of two curated capsule collections of designer vintage — referred to as its Vintage Goldmine series — at NastyGal.com.
Though Nasty Gal always offers a selection of designer vintage on its site and in stores, these annual capsule collections, which began in 2013, include one-off and limited-edition items. “The Vintage Goldmine capsule is the best of the best stuff: those really limited-edition, hard-to-find pieces that we absolutely cherish,” said Juliana McWilliams, the retailer’s vintage buyer. This year’s edition will include vintage clothing and accessories from Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, Chanel, Celine and more.
The first capsule will feature 80 accessories including jewelry and handbags — such as a Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Neverfull tote bag — from the Seventies to the early Aughts, ranging from $ 195 to $ 4,500. The second capsule, slated to launch online on Nov. 17,  will feature 50 items of vintage Yves Saint Laurent clothing ranging from $ 128 to $ 628. Highlights from the collection include the brand’s signature pussy-bow blouses — a style gaining traction in the media cycle lately — as well a Tom Ford-era

Heys Disney Frozen Designer Elsa Luggage Case

Heys Disney Frozen Designer Elsa Luggage Case

Designed Especially for Kids. The ”Designer Disney’ collection was created by Heys with the unique characteristics of children in mind, as it incorporates several design features that benefit children. These beautiful cases have Disney characters specially printed onto their hardshell surfaces. There are a variety of unique character prints in this collection; these prints include popular Disney characters such as Frozen, Princesses, Cars, Fairies, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Doc. Mcstuffins, Sofia and many more. In creating a ‘High-end’ series for Disney, our designers incorporated several children-specific features. One of these is the internal ‘reversed-curved’ handle system that curves the handle inwards & upwards closer to the child, making it much more comfortable for the child – at a low height – to hold and navigate the case. The Patent Protected design of this case also allows the wheels to ‘protrude’ out. This protrusion keeps the case elevated, so that even when being rolled at a very low height off the floor, the wheels will be the only point of contact and the case will continue to roll with ease. The cases weigh in at a mere 3.7 lbs, and feature our inline skate wheels that make their rolling even smoother, so any child can easily wheel these fun cases around. They also have a zipper closure system, that when opened reveals a beautifully lined interior as well as a zippered divider for internal organization.

British Designer Claire Barrow Stages First Solo Art Show

CLAIRE’S CREATIVITY: British designer Claire Barrow will be taking over East London’s M. Goldstein gallery for her first solo art show in April.
Titled “Bed, Bath & Beyond,” the mixed media exhibit will feature 17 pieces in ink, neon and acrylic.
The works juxtapose modern daily anxieties with medieval fables and religious iconography.
Barrow references the ritual of baptism against the daily habit of taking a shower or the fear of germs within a series of canvases, neons, shower curtains and toilet rolls.
“My initial reference point was social anxieties in British modern life. Then I was researching imagery from the Renaissance and Christianity’s depiction of hell, baptism and rebirth, so I started thinking about the similarities between that and the modern rituals of washing and feeling clean or free of guilt,” Barrow told WWD. “Once I had began painting and drawing, though, it was very much coming from my own imagination, I began referencing my feelings and instincts rather than taking any kind of direct visual inspiration.”
The NewGen recipient, who debuted her label as part of Fashion East during the spring 2013 season, has always blurred the lines between art and fashion.
“Every piece I create has art on it, there is a complete crossover

London Designer Katie Eary Teams With KFC on Capsule Collection

PLAYING CHICKEN: KFC has recruited edgy London men’s wear designer Katie Eary in its mission to demonstrate how much can be done in a lunch hour.
As part of the fast food brand’s #PackMoreIntoLunch campaign, KFC challenged Eary to create a capsule women’s wear collection for spring 2016 in 60 minutes.
On the day of the challenge, 25 machinists sewed like crazy to create 13 looks, worn by 10 models in a catwalk show at the Old Truman Brewery in London.
The collection, like the playful and irreverent men’s wear Eary is known for, was brightly colored, with a palette rooted in fluorescent orange and green.
Butterflies were the print motif, superimposed over hypersized KFC chickens — it shouldn’t have worked but it did. Floaty silk chiffon minidresses and cropped tops came with a lovely ostrich feather trim in neon green.
A red bias-cut slipdress that reached just above the ankles managed to be sexy and sophisticated, while the twist-front swimsuits had definite commercial appeal.
Of course, some preparations had been made. The collection had been finalized two weeks before: All the patterns had been made, and almost everything had been pre-cut for the 60-minute sew-a-thon.
There was a rawness to some looks that probably wasn’t intentional,

New Designer Spotlight: Gian Kamal

Everything is energy and the energy that one puts in something can be felt by others. That’s the premise that moved fashion publicist, energy worker and artist Corinna Springer to launch Gian Kamal loungewear.
The name stems from Springer’s spiritual name, which means “the consciousness of the pure lotus” in the Sikh tradition. “I like to refer to it as ‘energetically enhanced.’ It’s all about creating something that feels exceptionally good,” she explained.
The collection starts with Springer’s collages and paintings, which are photographed and then printed onto sustainable silk sourced in India. Pieces include languid caftans, kimono wraps, jumpsuits, pajama bottoms and silk T-shirts “ideal for meditation, sleep and lounging.” Prices range from $ 200-$ 800.

Cynthia Vincent Latest Designer to Partner With O’Neill

PRINT PLAY: The tribal and floral prints Cynthia Vincent is known for will soon be on the wetsuits and swimwear of O’Neill.
It’s the surfwear brand’s second time partnering with a designer and follows the rollout of fall pieces done in conjunction with Anna Sui, which hit stores a few weeks ago and saw quick sell-through on pieces such as a cream-colored kimono and crochet bikini.
“We’re really careful to partner with someone who will elevate our current looks,” said O’Neill women’s design director Rachael Hill. “There’s definitely synergy there. [The designer collaborations are] not necessarily a departure for us as much as it is an expansion and kind of captivating another customer we wouldn’t get otherwise.”
The collection for summer 2016 is expected to hit retail in April and is organized into three categories: sportswear, retailing from $ 59.50 to $ 99.50; swim, ranging from $ 46 to $ 110; and wetsuits priced between $ 140 to $ 200.
The company’s now turned to its holiday collection, which will also infuse designs from Vincent and could possibly include party dresses, chunky sweaters and giftable items, such as cosmetic bags or footwear. However, Hill said the collection is still in its early stages.
Additional designer collaborations are possible for the future

Caleres, Saint Louis Fashion Fund Name Emerging Designer Finalists

On Monday night, a bit of the Midwest came to New York City for the announcement of the Caleres Emerging Designer Award finalists, presented by the Saint Louis Fashion Fund. Designers from six brands were recognized in contention for the award, a $ 25,000 grant to be chosen on Nov. 4, during Saint Louis Fashion Week: Julie Haus and Jason Alkire of Haus Alkire, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of Eckhaus Latta, Azede Jean-Pierre, Katharine Polk of Houghton, Brandon Sun, and Jordana Warmflash of Novis.
The announcement came in the form of a cocktail party, held at the Caleres (formerly known as Brown Shoe Company) and Sam Edelman showroom in Midtown Manhattan, and hosted by Diane Sullivan, chief executive officer, president and chairman of Caleres, along with Sam and Libby Edelman, Tomoko Ogura, Roopal Patel, Lisa Perry and Gary Wassner. Before presenting the finalists, Elizabeth Tucker, creator of Saint Louis Fashion Week, gave a brief introduction about the importance of the program. “The startup scene is booming in the city of Saint Louis, so I would love to recognize Diane Sullivan for her vision and realizing that a huge part of this equation is attracting, retraining and developing designers as a part of

British Designer Claire Barrows Hosts Pop-up, Revamps Website

SECRET STORE: To coincide with the launch of her revamped Web site, Claire Barrow will host a “secret” pop-up store, offering limited-edition designs beginning Aug. 7. Shoppers can sign up on clairebarrow.com to receive a code to gain access to shop at the pop-up.
The online shopping area will offer 24 pieces including silk scarves, ruffle tops, tote bags, shirts, sew-on patches and leather coats and jackets. Designed exclusively for the store, the pieces have been hand-painted by Barrow. In addition, she’s selling a series of leather iPhone cases designed together with The Case Factory. The price range is 20 pounds, or $ 31, for a painted patch to 1,500 pounds, or $ 2,340, for a lambskin leather swing coat.
“It’s a pre-collection, but very limited edition, each thing having been hand-painted, dyed, etc. by myself,” Barrow told WWD. “Like all my collections, it has a story behind it. The idea of hand-painting things to sell online inspired the collection because it got me thinking about art you can wear and e-commerce; it’s a bit like being in the [museum] gift shop rather than the gallery. From this idea I constructed a curated ‘gift shop’ range of products for a make-believe museum of ancient erotic

This Designer Evening Gown Collection Is Straight Out of a Fairy Tale

With petal-soft colors, delicate lace, and frothy tulle, the gowns from Alberta Ferretti‘s limited-edition spring 2016 evening collection felt like they were sprung to life from the closet of a fairy-tale princess. The pieces were inspired by her castle too, with embroidery, golden accents, and sprays of flowers all created to mimic the ornate finishings that would have decorated a grand 19th-century estate.

The extreme glamour was completely intentional: Ferretti’s evening collection is priced approximately 25 to 30 percent higher than her signature range, per WWD, and is made with the most elegant of events in mind. In other words, add Queen Maxima’s pearl-and-diamond tiara and you’re ready to go.

And if you like princess gowns, you’ll obviously need a princess braid:

Rihanna’s Met Gala Dress Designer Didn’t Actually Want Her to Wear It

rihanna

Chinese couturier Guo Pei became an international fashion superstar the moment Rihanna took her first step on the Met Gala red carpet in May—but if the designer had her way, RiRi wouldn’t have worn it at all.

“I actually didn’t think the dress was the right one for her,” Guo told WWD. “I thought it would be too heavy and too hot, but she was so touched the moment she put it on.”

Bad-gal RiRi knows what works for her, though. The embroidered cape with fur trim and mile-long train was arguably the most photographed—and talked-about—dress of fashion’s biggest night. Pei revealed that the cape weighs 55 pounds and took nearly two years to make. Talk about conviction!

Breaking: Donna Karan to Step Down as Lead Designer of Her Brand

donna-karan
Donna Karan taking her final runway bow during New York Fashion Week in February.

Breaking designer news: Donna Karan is stepping down from namesake company, Donna Karan International.

WWD reports that the 66-year old designer is leaving the design world to focus on her philanthropic work with Urban Zen, which according to its web site, aims to “raise awareness and inspire change in the areas of preservation of cultures, well-being and education.”

“I have arrived at a point in my life where I need to spend more time to pursue my Urban Zen commitment to its fullest potential and follow my vision of philanthropy and commerce with a focus on health care, education and preservation of cultures,” Karan told WWD. “After considering the right time to take this step for several years, I feel confident that DKI has a bright future and a strong team in place.”

This announcement comes right on heels of the April announcment that Public School designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, would become designers for Karan’s contemporary brand, DKNY.

To say Donna Karan is a fashion industry icon is an understatement. She was an integral part of building the foundation of American fashion design, having come up alongside Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass in the ’80s. What’s more, she was one of the few female designers, designing for women—which earned her a devoted female fanbase who felt she really understood their bodies and their needs.

After assisting Anne Klein for several years, the New York native started her namesake label in 1985, with what would become her signature “seven easy pieces.” She envisioned the interchangeable jersey bodysuits, dresses, cocoon blazers etc, would become the foundation of a woman’s wardrobe. And they did.

Karan has been bestowed every significant fashion award there is and most notably, her eighth CFDA award came in 2003 for Lifetime Achievement. She was also one of Glamour’s Women of the Year in 2007.

Update: According to a statement from Donna Karan International, the firm will not seek to replace Karan as Chief Designer for the Donna Karan label quite yet. Shows and collections will be suspended for a period of time.

You Know That Waxy Turquoise And Purple Cup That’s So ’90s? Meet Its Genius Designer

You may not know its name, but we know you’ve seen the classic squiggly design that’s most recognizable from paper cups.

Yeah, you know what we’re talking about — that purple and turquoise pattern that hits you with giant pangs of nostalgia. The “Jazz” design began showing up on paper cups about 23 years ago. Recently, an AMA request came in from a Reddit user who wanted to know who the designer was. That pushed reporter Thomas Gounley of Missouri’s Springfield News-Leader to do some digging.

cup
The iconic design.

After much investigation, Gounley was successful and last week he discovered that 50-year-old Gina Ekiss, who lives in Aurora, Mississippi, is the iconic design’s creator, according to his piece in the News-Leader. Ekiss, who’s now a custom frame shop manager at a Hobby Lobby, was met with Internet acclaim as the discovery spread across social media outlets.

“I’m just still pretty stunned about the whole deal,” Ekiss told ABC News in reaction to her Internet stardom. “I’m thrilled that it’s still popular.”

http://solojazz.tumblr.com/post/121874087614/meet-gina-the-designer-of-the-solo-jazz-cup

The path to finding Ekiss wasn’t an easy one. The reporter only knew the designer’s first name as well as the fact that she had worked for the Sweetheart Cup Company, which was later bought by Solo Cup Company. He eventually found a tweet from a person claiming to be the creator’s daughter, according to his article. After looking through public records and coming across Ekiss’ name and address, Gounley drove to her house and confirmed his suspicions.

Turns out, Ekiss had created Jazz as part of an internal cup design contest at the Sweetheart Cup Company in 1989, after outside design firms had came up with unsatisfying results. Ekiss said that Jazz was among three or four different designs she had submitted, and its colors are just ones she felt meshed well.

“I just did turquoise, or teal, because that’s one of my favorite colors,” she told ABC News. “I wanted another overlapping color that would work well together. I just liked the purple with it and everybody seemed pleased with that.”

The 50-year-old still keeps a few products with the Jazz design in her house, and says it’s “insane” that her artwork has become such a memorable part of ’90s culture.

Phew! We can all breathe easy now that this pressing mystery’s finally been solved.

With the recent runaway success of its I’m No Angel campaign, Lane Bryant has the fashion industry buzzing. And the plus-size retailer is hoping to keep that momentum going through next year, with today’s announcement that Christian Siriano will become its newest guest designer.

The Project Runway alum, known for his curve-hugging red carpet gowns, will launch a capsule collection for the specialty retailer, which will bow in spring 2016. Siriano joins the ranks of Bryant’s former designer collaborators such as Isabel Toledo, Sophie Theallet, and Lela Rose.

“Fashion should never be defined by size,” Siriano said in a statement about the collection, which will range in size from 14 to 28. “Regardless if it’s for red carpet or a day at the office, every woman should feel stylish and comfortable in their clothes. I’m excited about this partnership with Lane Bryant because it allows me the opportunity to showcase my designs on the everyday woman and allow them the opportunity to feel as beautiful and fashionable as possible.”

FABRICATIONS: Meet Queer Fashion Designer And Artist Ben Copperwheat

This is the twelfth installment in a miniseries titled “FABRICATIONS” that elevates the work of up-and-coming queer individuals working in the fashion world. Check back at HuffPost Gay Voices regularly to learn more about some of the designers of tomorrow and the way their work in fashion intersects with their queer identity.

Originally hailing from the United Kingdom, Ben Copperwheat is a queer fashion designer and artist living and working in New York City. His clothing is heavily informed by both his background in screen printing and his work throughout a variety of facets of the fashion industry, and his designs have appeared on the likes of Boy George, Liza Minnelli and Pat Cleveland. Read the interview below to learn more.

ben copperwheat

The Huffington Post: What has your journey as a queer artist and fashion designer entailed?
Ben Copperwheat: I was born in Luton, England, 30 miles north of London and lived the first 28 years of my life in the United Kingdom. I had an interest in art at a very young age and drew pictures of Disney characters in my childhood and Madonna in my teens while listening to the pop music my mum would play. At 18 I enrolled in the local art college and, with the nurturing of wonderful tutors, I went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts at Bath Spa University. My aspirations led me to London and the Royal College Of Art of which I graduated with an MA in Printed Textiles in 2001. This jumpstarted my career and since then my journey has been a wondrous ride of exploration and growth.

After graduating I taught textiles for fashion at Northumbria University in England. This was great as I enjoy working with students, but it also enabled me to pursue print design projects with a variety of different people and companies. After two years working in London I felt ready for a big change. It doesn’t get much bigger than New York City! I had visited New York twice before and had fallen in love with its fizzy energy and sky-high possibilities. My cousin was already living in NYC, so this made the transition easier.

ben

Upon arrival in 2003 I applied for jobs, and almost immediately I was offered a position as a print designer at Calvin Klein Jeans. I worked at CKJ for five years and I had a great time. I learned a huge amount about the fashion industry, met some lifelong friends and travelled the world to cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, Paris, London, Barcelona, Dehli and Jaipur, shopping for inspiration. During my time at CKJ I also designed print collections for Stephen Burrows, Sue Stemp and Peter Som. In 2008 I desired more freedom so I left my job and transitioned to a freelance print designer.

In 2009, in partnership with my cousin Lee Copperwheat, came the formation of the clothing label COPPERWHEAT. We produced five seasons for New York Fashion Week in a variety of venues including Soho Grand Hotel, the Maritime Hotel and Cappellini store in SoHo. This was a huge learning curve, a tumultuous ride, the outcome of which was some beautifully made, very cool clothes. Ultimately, this label and partnership was not meant to be. In 2012 we went our separate ways, at which point I threw my creative energy into what I know best: screen printing. This juncture felt like a new beginning, and came with it a freedom of expression more vibrant and unrestrained than I had previously experienced. With a print area built into my duplex apartment in Bushwick, I went for leather and printed clothing, wallpaper and interior fabrics. I started selling pieces in Patricia Field’s store on the Bowery and producing commissioned outfits for clients.

liza

Where have your designs appeared?
Through my work with Stephen Burrows, my prints have adorned the bodies of Liza Minnelli, Pat Cleveland, Gail O’Neill, Alva Chinn, Anna Cleveland and Lily Cole. With the label COPPERWHEAT we were featured in Dazed, Surface Magazine, Vogue Italia, Style.com, collaborated with Palladium Boots, Singer Miguel and Bruno Mars. For my own brand, Ben Copperwheat, my prints have been worn by NBA star Russell Westbrook, commissioned for Will Sheridan, Rod Thomas of Bright Light Bright Light and, most recently, I designed the stage outfit for the Boy George/Culture Club reunion tour and merchandise T-Shirts. Boy George debuted this outfit on “American Idol” in March 2015.

boy george

What does it mean to you to be a queer designer? How does your queer identity intersect with your work?
Queer has always been a tough word for me to embrace, as growing up in England I was bullied for my sexuality from as early as I can remember to the age of 8. Queer was one of the words I was called, along with “bent” and “puffter.” I feel, as time goes on, the word “queer” is becoming more of a friend. So, therefore, to be a queer designer, living in New York City is a gift. I feel incredibly grateful to have the freedom to express myself through my clothing, art and interactions in such a vibrant culture — especially when there is so much oppression and suffering throughout the world. I have been openly gay/queer for over 20 years, so my queer identity is without a doubt synonymous with my work. Bright color and graphic pattern are predominant features in my designs, which is not the norm in current fashion and art. I feel “queer” represents that which is not the norm.

Who does Ben Copperwheat design for? Who is your audience and how do your designs cater to them?
I design for anyone who is looking for something different and visually exciting. My designs are a cross between artistic streetwear and high-end fashion. Whomever wears them brings their own personality and dimension to the prints. I have fans and clients of all ages and backgrounds. I wear my designs daily as I find this to be the most comfortable form of self-expression and I am regularly stopped on the street by a cross-section of admirers. I am inspired by the world around me — in particular New York City — and I feel my work reflects this.

Historically the fashion world has been extremely queer friendly — what role do you think the fashion world has played within mainstream acceptance of LGBT identity?
I feel it definitely has played a part in mainstream acceptance, especially Vivienne Westwood, with her embracement of all things queer. Also, other designers in tandem with popular music, specifically artists such as Madonna working with Jean Paul Gaultier, Lady Gaga with Alexander McQueen, Pet Shop Boys with Jeffrey Bryant to name a few. On the other hand, designers such as Dolce & Gabanna and Giorgio Armani are trying to turn the clock back with recent comments. Such is the push and pull nature of progress.

What does the future hold for Ben Copperwheat?
With 15 years working as a designer and turning 40 this coming September, I feel that I am only just starting to realize my full creative potential. To be an artist/designer is a lifelong vocation, so with, I hope, at least another 40 years left on this planet I have many great things to come. I am currently in a group show curated by my friend Walt Cessna, “#INTERFACE Queer Artists Forming Communities Through Social Media” at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York. I am also planning work for a solo art show in NYC. I would like to show solo again at NYFW when the time feels right — branch out more into interiors (wallpaper/murals/fabrics). I am turning my apartment into a “museum” of my work, where every surface is printed/painted. Design costume and sets for theater. Get back to painting — I started out as a painter while at art school. Continue to nurture relationships with recording artists and performers and design more stage outfits. My ethos is that prints can be applied to anything. The nature of my work is very versatile, and I intend to continue to evolve in this way.
