Shania Twain Was ‘Shattered’ by Divorce as She Battled Lyme Disease: ‘I Never Thought I Would Sing Again’

Shania Twain feared she would never sing again after a battle with Lyme disease affected her vocal cords and caused her to withdraw form the spotlight for over a decade.

The “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer is opening up to 60 Minutes Australia about the toll the illness took on her, both physically and emotionally.

“I never thought I would sing again,” she said.

The 52-year-old singer had to fight to regain her singing voice from the damaging effects of dysphonia, the result of Lyme disease.

She also said that her divorce from Robert Lange after reports of infidelity left her “broken” as she fought for her health.

“I was shattered,” she said. “How many more traumatic moments can I take?’ she said.  “I wasn’t just broken, I was shattered.”

In July, Twain also opened up to PEOPLE about her battle with Lyme: “I was very scared for a little while that I wouldn’t sing again, ever. I went through that moment, but I found a way. I found a way to do it.”

Now, using her voice requires lengthy warmups and physical therapy that Twain described as “very, very difficult.”

Twain was away from the music scene for 15 years, as she worked to recover from the disease

Twain’s 2015 attempt at a final tour was plagued by health issues, as she was forced to cancel several dates due to a “respiratory infection.”

Firsts and Faves with Shania Twain

Now, the singer is making another comeback. Twain recently announced the release of her latest album Now — her first in 15 years. She previously told PEOPLE that the self-penned project isn’t a comback,  it’s “a continuation. This is an evolution,” she said.
“It’s all about reflecting on what I’ve been through, owning what I’ve been through, not ignoring it and saying ‘forget about it, move on,’ ” she told PEOPLE. “I don’t want to forget about it. It’s made me who I am.”
The full interview will air on 60 Minutes Australia on Sunday.

Alec Baldwin Opens Up About Suffering From Lyme Disease and Thinking He Was Going to Die

Alec Baldwin went from singing “Hallelujah” on the season finale of Saturday Night Live to jetting to balmy California to talk for the first time since a 2011 casual comment to the New York Times about having Lyme disease.

“They had me hiding in the bushes over there at a Lyme disease benefit,” Baldwin said as he went on the stage for the Bay Area Lyme Foundation (http://www.bayarealyme.org) LymeAid benefit for research at a private home in the woodsy enclave of Portola Valley, Ca outside Palo Alto on Sunday. “I have ticks all over me. I’m joking.”

Baldwin has been reluctant to talk about the disease, and Bay Area Lyme Foundation Executive Director Linda Giampa said that she has been trying for years to get him to come to their event. He finally agreed to do it last year, but then the appearance was almost derailed by Baldwin’s decision to do the SNL finale.

“We had already sold out the event for 350 people on that night when I was told. I asked if he would do it the next night and he graciously agreed,” Giampa said. “I think he just felt the time was right to talk about it.”

Baldwin said that he believed he had chronic Lyme disease even before he was diagnosed with it. He was bitten about 17 years ago, and got a shot. Then he was bitten again a few years later.

“I got the classic Lyme disease (symptoms) for each successive summer, for five years, every August, like this black lung, flu-like symptoms, sweating to death in my bed,” Baldwin said. “The first round (was the worst), and then it diminished, at least that’s how I perceived it.”

“The first time was the worst of all,” he recalled. “And I really thought this is it, I’m not going to live. I was alone, I wasn’t married at the time, I was divorced from my first wife. I was lying in bed saying, ‘I’m going to die of Lyme disease,’ in my bed and ‘I hope someone finds me and I’m not here for too long.’ ”

Baldwin went on to say that now he and his wife Hilaria constantly check their children for signs of tick bites.

“I want my kids to grow up riding horses and bikes and enjoying themselves every day and not have to spend every day with us going over them with a magnifying glass to make sure they don’t have any ticks on their body or their dogs, but that is part of the lifestyle of where I live,” he said.

He then lightened things up with his impersonation of President Trump and a joke about New York being a Red State. After an audience groan, he shot back, “I have Lyme disease. A little sympathy here.”

The benefit dinner and concert raised more than $ 8 Million, of which 100% will go directly to fund research for Lyme disease.

Gina de Givenchy Launches Geeg Specializing in Headwear for Women Fighting Disease

WELL-COVERED: As a cancer survivor, Gina de Givenchy knows firsthand the complex emotions that women face while fighting disease.
Her new e-commerce business, Geeg, specializes in head coverings made of shirting material, turbans and other specialty items designed to help lift the spirits of the unwell.
After having a double mastectomy and starting treatment for breast cancer in 2013, the former fashion executive said she struggled to find any headwear that was “relatable” to her. Starting to think about going back to work, de Givenchy said. “I really wanted to start my own business. It really was like a bolt of lightning, after searching the Internet. It’s not really something that you’re walking the streets for. There was nothing that was really designer and luxury. And there was no real retail shopping for the cancer patient.”
That realization was “really strange” for de Givenchy who had always been connected to the fashion industry through her posts at Richard Tyler, Chanel and Jil Sander. She explained, “I sort of felt like the same person even though I didn’t look like same person. I just felt sort of shortchanged.”
Recalling her own purchases, she said, “What it really comes down to is I needed something that

Gallstones, Gallbladder Disease, and Surgery: A Patient’s Guide

Gallstones, Gallbladder Disease, and Surgery: A Patient’s Guide

Almost one million gallbladder surgeries are performed annually in the United States and often, patients have almost no understanding of what is happening to their bodies. As surgeons we do a poor job educating our patients, and patients are often too intimidated by the prospects of surgery to think of the right questions to ask! This brief, 7600 word text offers a description of the anatomy of the gallbladder and how that anatomy influences treatment options. Topics covered include: What is the gallbladder? What are gallstones? What are the symptoms of stones in the gallbladder? What about stones outside the gallbladder? Why surgery? Can’t you just remove the stones? How do you do the surgery? What should I expect after the operation? Specifically, this text gives an anatomic explanation for why gallstones are treated the way they are. It includes descriptions of what gallstones are, how their anatomic locations will cause varying symptom patterns, and the two main surgeries used to treat gallstone disease. The topics of stones in the common bile duct (choledocolithiasis and cholangitis) are also discussed, in addition to the ERCP procedure to clear the duct. There is also a discussion of post operative expectations based on commonly believed myths and commonly asked questions. This book is written by an MD who routinely performs gallbladder surgery. I have based this book on my many years worth of experience in answering patient questions and knowing what my patients are concerned about. If you or a loved one have been told that you have gallstones, it is my sincere hope that this book will shed some light on your condition and why the proposed treatment is what it is! Topics/subjects: gallstones, gall stones, gallbladder, gall bladder, cholecystectomy, laparoscopic, surgery, general surgery, jaundice, bile, abdominal pain, pancreas, ERCP.

Emerging Drugs and Targets for Parkinson’s Disease

Emerging Drugs and Targets for Parkinson’s Disease

Affecting over 1.5 million people across the world, Parkinsons disease is a progressive neurological condition characterized, in part, by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. It affects 1.5% of the global population over 65 years of age. As life expectancy is increasing, over the next few years the number of patients with Parkinsons disease will grow exponentially. To date, there are no available treatments that are capable of curing Parkinsons disease, and the current goal of therapy, dopamine replacement strategies, is to reduce symptoms. After several years of disease progression, treatment is complicated by the onset of motor fluctuations and dyskinesias. This information reveals the great importance and social need of finding an effective therapeutic intervention for Parkinsons disease. This exemplary new book reviews some of the most outstanding examples of new drugs currently in pharmaceutical development or new targets currently undergoing the validation process to try to reach the Parkinsons drug market in the next few years as potential disease modifying drugs. Providing up to date and comprehensive coverage, this book will be essential reading for researchers working in academia and industry in any aspect of medicinal chemistry or drug discovery.

Chronic Hepatitis B: An Update, an Issue of Clinics in Liver Disease

Dr. Anna Lok provides an authoritative review on the current issues and controversies of treatment of chronic hepatitis B. Dr. Stephen Locarnini, who has extensive experience in anti-viral resistance and its management, presents important issues in the usage of currently available anti-viral oral agents. Dr. Myron Tong discusses the current understanding of HBV carcinogenesis and updates HCC surveillance and treatment – the most dreadful outcome of this disease. Dr. Paul Martin discusses management of end- stage chronic hepatitis B – anti-viral therapy, montherapy vs combo therapy, choice of agent, when to start therapy and post-transplant patients including duration of HBIG therapy, HBcAb(+)only recipient) and Occult HBV infection. Dr. Tram Tran discusses the trea…
