Maskit Looks to Build U.S. Sales With NYFW Event and Art Installation

MASKIT TAKES NEW YORK: Friends of the Israel Defense Forces’ tristate region is hosting Maskit Fashion House’s NYFW debut today at Metropolitan West. Started in 1954 and known as the first fashion house of Israel, the company belonged to the Israeli government in its earlier years. The idea was to provide work for immigrants and to teach them craftsmanship as well as new techniques. In its prime, there were 2,000 employees and 10 freestanding stores, including a Fifth Avenue location. In 1994, it was shut down before being revived five years ago. Head designer Sharon Tal interned for Alber Elbaz at one point, before specializing in embroidery at Alexander McQueen. The brand is now backed by Lyn and Stef Wertheimer and is being shown for a limited time in New York.
In addition to the fashion show, the company is showcasing a large-scale art project titled “Mount Sodom” by Israeli fashion photographer Eyal Nevo. On view at 10 Times Square through Oct. 6, the project features dancers from the Inbal Dance Theater, Israel’s first and oldest modern dance company. Mount Sodom premiered in Tel Aviv in June in the presence of Israel’s first lady.

Pizza Inferno: John Travolta Channels Saturday Night Fever at Brooklyn Event in His Honor

John Travolta returned to Lenny’s Pizza in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, on Tuesday, over 40 years after his Saturday Night Fever character Tony Manero made the establishment famous.

Dressed in a white suit jacket and black shirt that mimicked the iconic outfit he wore in the 1977 film, the actor was all smiles as he was honored by the borough in what was dubbed “John Travolta Day.”

Wife Kelly Preston was by his side at the event, dressed in a long-sleeve black patterned dress. The two danced to the Bee Gees’ music from the film’s best-selling soundtrack, and sampled slices from Lennys as they were cheered on by thousands of admirers gathered along 86th Street.

Travolta, 64, put Lenny’s Pizza on the map in the opening credits of Saturday Night Fever when he ordered two slices from the eatery, stacked them, and ate them together as one. Lenny’s has since named the “double-decker slice” in Travolta’s honor, local outlet PIX-11 reported.

“It’s not often that we have an opportunity to recognize a great actor who helped turn Brooklyn into a cultural touchstone of the late 1970s,” New York State Senator Marty Golden told the crowd, in video captured by PIX-11. “John Travolta did exactly that.”

For his part, Travolta appeared to be overjoyed and humbled. “We love you. We love Brooklyn,” he told the crowd in the PIX-11 clip. “Thank you very, very much.”

“I’m so humbled, it’s amazing,” he added as police escorted him through the crowds, according to the outlet. “I never expected this big a turnout, it was awesome.”

Preston, 55, shared video and photos of the afternoon on Instagram.

“Having a total fangirl moment!!! 💁🏼‍♀️” she wrote. “Thank you Brooklyn for an insane day 😍.”

RELATED VIDEO: John Travolta’s Changing Looks!

Saturday Night Fever followed the dual life of Travolta’s character; a star on the discotheque dance floor but a working-class man with a dead-end job and an unsupportive family back at home.

The film — which was directed by John Badham — popularized disco music across the world. A Sylvester Stallone-directed sequel, Staying Alive, was released in 1983.

Travolta is in the Big Apple to support his new movie, Gotti, in theaters on Friday.

The week also marks the 40th anniversary of another one of Travolta’s treasured films: Grease.

Jennifer Lawrence Supports Ex and ‘Very Good Friend’ Darren Aronofsky at N.Y.C. Event

Jennifer Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky are amicable exes.

The former couple split in the fall after over a year of dating, but they were all smiles posing together at the BAM Gala in New York City on Wednesday.

The reunion didn’t stop there: according to E! News, the 27-year-old actress introduced Aronofsky, an honoree of the night.

“I am thrilled to be here tonight to present this honor to my very good friend, Darren Aronofsky,” she said.

Lawrence wore white for the event, pairing a dress with a structured bodice that fell below her knees with a pair of strappy silver heels and clutch. She wore her blonde locks in loose waves. Meanwhile, Aronofsky kept things simple in a navy suit with a black button-up and matching tie.

Lawrence and Aronofsky made their public debut for the Venice Film Festival photocall of their film mother! The pair began dating in September 2016 shortly after the movie’s production and their relationship blossomed despite their 22-year age difference.

She first talked about their romance after a year of staying mum in an interview with Vogue. Lawrence previously shared that she was immediately drawn to the director after meeting on the set of the film.

“We had energy,” she said. “I had energy for him. I don’t know how he felt about me. I’ve been in relationships before where I am just confused. And I’m never confused with him.”

RELATED: Can Exes Really Be Friends? 10 Celebs Weigh in on the Great Breakup Debate

After admitting she still loves Aronofsky in February, Lawrence explained on WTF with Marc Maron that she’s on good terms with all her former beaus.

“I’m friends with all my exes, actually,” she said. “For the most part, yeah, I have a theory: I think it’s because I’m blunt. I don’t think that you can have any sort of bad relationship with anybody if you’re just blunt.”

She continued, “Everybody always knows how you feel at all times and there’s no lying, it’s just honesty. Everybody’s a good guy to each other. All my boyfriends have been wonderful. Nick was a great boyfriend.”

Norma Kamali Talks 50th Anniversary Event, Sirius Radio Show and Health-Inspired Line

FAST FORWARD: While a 50-year anniversary usually calls for some reminiscing, Norma Kamali wants no part of it.
Looking back is counter to the designer’s way of being. “I really hate it,” she said.
Despite that tendency, Kamali has culled 70-plus clothing pieces and accessories for What Goes Around Comes Around and she “appreciates that there is interest in her previous designs.” Her fashion past, so to speak, will be showcased Tuesday in the “Vintage for the Future” event at the WGACA SoHo store and online. Kamali isn’t the only one celebrating an anniversary, the retailer is nearing its 25th year and is eyeing a Madison Avenue location.
WGACA cofounder Gerard Malone said he first met Kamali 10 years ago, and the pair stayed in touch. He thought what better time than fashion week to hold a launch party. Shoppers will find fringed eveningwear, bomber jackets, crop tops and other items mostly in the $ 750 to $ 3,500 retail price range. Kamali was hesitant to pick favorites. “I remember them being favorites, when I made them, and what the creative process was,” she explained. “But even now when I finish collections, I’m separated from it and I’m not connected to it anymore. ‘Black Panther: Welcome to Wakanda’ Fashion Event Features 10 Designers

“Black Panther: Welcome to Wakanda,” a nod to the fashion inspired by the new superhero movie, will be presented by Marvel Studios on Feb. 12 as part of New York Fashion Week.
The red carpet event takes place at Industria at 775 Washington Street from 8 to 10 p.m., and several stars from the movie are expected to attend.
Designers including Chromat, Cushnie et Ochs, Fear of God, Ikiré Jones, Laquan Smith, Sophie Theallet and Tome worked with Marvel Studios to create one-of-a-kind pieces interpreting different characters and themes from the movie. The designers were selected for their dedication to empowerment and individualism through fashion.
The seven bespoke pieces will be unveiled the night of the event and installed in a Wakanda-inspired venue that guests can explore. Following the event, the looks will be auctioned off via Charitybuzz.com in support of Save the Children.
Jones called the experience “awesome and great.”
“I was honored, and I saw the film with my partner. It’s an attempt to help uplift the voices of people who have been marginalized historically and in the present day, both in the U.S. and globally, and Ikiré Jones specifically does that by using fashion as a vehicle to address these issues. Boucheron Opens Vendôrama Show With Evening Event

MINGLING AT THE MINT: Guests at Boucheron’s interactive Vendôrama anniversary exhibit began their journey at the back door of the 18th-century Hôtel de la Monnaie. Who would guess that it would open on to a graffitied tunnel?
The uninitiated might be forgiven for missing the references in the tags: 1858 — that would be the year the house founder Frédéric Boucheron opened his first store — and Quatre for the jewelry line launched in 2004.
Inside a temporary exhibit space sitting in the courtyard, visitors were served up a mix of screens, live actors, and jewelry displays, set amidst rich green foliage including ivy — a traditional inspiration for the house. Even the guidebook was interactive, with pages folding out to reveal details of the jewelry on display.
“There’s a rock ‘n roll feel to it that I like,” said Charlotte Rampling, noting the unexpected presentation style, as the lighting on a collection of Quatre rings suddenly switched off behind her, making them disappear for a spell.
On one wall, guests could snap metal beads onto a giant replica of the asymmetrical Question Mark necklace—and have their photo taken there — while a display of Serpent Bohème necklaces jutted out of a tall, red lacquered

Natalia Vodianova Cuts Ribbon on Dior Event at Galeries Lafayette

THE BIG BLUE: Christian Dior painted Galeries Lafayette blue on Tuesday evening for a special event marking the 70th anniversary of the French fashion house.
Dior has taken over 11 windows at the retailer’s Paris flagship on Boulevard Haussmann until Oct. 10. In celebration of creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s blue-themed fall collection for the house, the store is offering 23 exclusive products at a pop-up space on the ground floor.
The event coincides with Paris Fashion Week, which is scheduled to run from Sept. 25 to Oct. 3.
Model and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova joined Chiuri, Dior chief executive officer Sidney Toledano and members of the Houzé family, which runs Galeries Lafayette, to cut the ribbon in front of the zodiac-themed window displays — a nod to house founder Christian Dior’s fondness for consulting astrologers.

Pausing to admire the hot-air balloon hovering under the flagship’s landmark cupola, attendees including Philippe Houzé, executive chairman of Galeries Lafayette Group, and Nicolas Houzé, ceo of its department store division, headed to the Galerie des Galeries exhibition space to take in a show of 12 original designs by Dior, titled “I Feel Blue,” which

Opening Ceremony won’t forget the victims of Hurricane Harvey even during New York Fashion Week.

LVMH Holds Start-Up Style Event for Employees

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT: Out to encourage its staff to think like entrepreneurs, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton this weekend staged the inaugural edition of its internal start-up style initiative DARE LVMH, short for Disrupt, Act, Risk to be an Entrepreneur.
The three-day event gathered 60 LVMH employees from across 40 of the group’s houses and based in 15 countries to develop pitches in a WeWork co-working space in the city’s center. They were whittled down from 500 candidatures sent in after a “call for ideas” made by the group to 4,000 of its collaborators.
Each of the 60 talents selected had to present their pitches on Friday. They were then split into 12 teams to develop the ideas that got the top votes from a jury comprised of independent consultants and LVMH executives, including the luxury group’s managing director, Antonio Belloni. Each team was joined by an independent coach or mentor from the executive ranks of a range of LVMH houses. Also joining the teams were 20 interns and students from the group’s partnering schools.
Following a final pitching session, three teams were selected by the jury and will be mentored by members of the group’s executive committee to help bring to life their respective

The Hidden Good-Luck Charm Sewn Into the Queen’s Coronation Gown – and 4 Other Secrets from the Historic Event

God save the Queen! Those were the shouts heard from inside Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, when Queen Elizabeth II took the Coronation Oath and officially became the ruling monarch of the U.K and the Commonwealth.

Although Elizabeth ascended the throne as a young 25-year-old princess on February 6, 1952, immediately on hearing of the death of her father, King George VI, it wasn’t until 16 months later on June 2, 1953, that she was crowned, such was the extent of the planning needed. Her first years as Queen are featured in the first season of Netflix’s hit series, The Crown.

Read on for five surprising facts on the 64th anniversary of the Queen’s historic day:

1. It Was the First Televised Coronation

Tech-savvy even back then, Princess Elizabeth was determined to have the ceremony broadcast (much against the disapproval of Sir Winston Churchill). It would be the first coronation to be televised (except for the anointing and the communion) and was broadcast in 44 languages. An estimated 20 million people gathered round their television screens (or those of their neighbors) to catch a glimpse of the pomp and ceremony of the momentous occasion. After the event, sales of televisions rocketed.

2. Her Gown Had a Hidden Good-Luck Charm

Trusted royal couturier Sir Norman Hartnell worked closely with Elizabeth to create a gown in the finest white duchess satin, richly embroidered with national and Commonwealth floral emblems in gold and silver thread. Encrusted with seed pearls, sequins and crystals, the designer added a secret detail for extra luck. Unknown to the Queen, Hartnell included an extra four-leaf shamrock on the left side of the skirt, which was positioned perfectly so that Her Majesty’s hand would rest on it during the ceremony.

3. Top-Secret Staff Were Recruited

There was a shortage of professional coachmen to help transport dignitaries to Westminster Abbey in horse drawn carriages, so millionaire businessmen and country squires offered their services – many dressing up as servants to help take people to the ceremony.

4. Footage Was Flown Across the Atlantic in Military Jets

To make the broadcast available the same day, Royal Air Force bomber jets known as Canberras flew film footage across the Atlantic so that the Canadian Broadcast Company could air it. It was the first non-stop transatlantic flight between the United Kingdom and Canada, and landed in Labrador.

5. The Romance!

Prince Philip was the first person to pay homage to the Queen after the Archbishop of Canterbury. After being lifted on her throne, her husband said, “I Philip, do become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks. So help me God.” He then kissed her crown and her left cheek.

Max Mara Awards High School Photographer at Miami Event

“I take my camera everywhere I go,” said Torrance Hall, a high school senior from Richmond, Va., who received the second annual Max Mara Young Visionary Award through the Italian fashion house’s ongoing partnership with the National YoungArts Foundation headquartered in Miami.
The budding photographer slung a Canon EOS Rebel T3i over his shoulder during the ceremony and reception for an exhibit of his works for sale at Max Mara’s store in the Miami Design District on April 12. The series of self-portraits depicts his coming of age as a cross between introspection and celebration. Themes touch on what defines manliness for his generation and suburbia as a place for a young artist to escape yet call home.
“I couldn’t believe how a 17-year-old could be so tormented,” said Maria Giulia Maramotti, Max Mara’s U.S. retail director, who purchased two photographs after presenting him with the $ 10,000 award. “You just don’t see work that powerful and meaningful outside of a major art gallery. It struck me right away, and I knew he was our winner.”
Hall competed with thousands of teenagers for the honor. Many are invited to Miami for National YoungArts Week in January, when they attend master classes by the nonprofit’s

L.A. Laker Jordan Clarkson and Chris Stamp Link for Fan Fashion Event

Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson took a moment off the court to join L.A. streetwear designer Chris Stamp of Stampd for the Delta Air Lines Beyond the Court event on Monday. Held at the brand’s La Brea Boulevard store, the early evening affair featured an interactive experience for 100 fans who clamored for selfies following a Q&A about Clarkson’s design aspirations.
“It’s been a process,” Clarkson told WWD beforehand, explaining he’s been “drawing out different things and exploring” the possibility of launching his own line once the basketball season ends. “A lot of it is probably going to be done this summer when I don’t have anything to do.”
The 24-year-old basketball player—who has reportedly dated models Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and Chanel Iman—describes his style as “kinda off the wall.”
Prior to the event, Stamp met with Clarkson to offer advice and discuss the design process. “It was cool to show him what we do and to see which of our pieces he was drawn to outside of what I maybe had thought,” said Stamp. “Style is about being comfortable, being yourself in your own skin, and I think he does a great job with that. I think he’s very natural

‘It’s a Danger to Our Students’: Illinois Student Dies During Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day Drinking Event

A student at the University of Illinois fell off a balcony and died Friday during “Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day,” an annual campustown event marked by its daylong drinking and rowdy celebrations, officials say.

The death of Jonathan Morales, 23, of Franklin Park, Illinois, is suspected to be an accident after he toppled over the balcony railing from his fourth-floor apartment and fell to the concrete courtyard in the interior of the apartment complex, Champaign police Sgt. Dennis Baltzell tells PEOPLE.

“He was on that balcony messing around somehow and accidentally went over,” Baltzell says.

Results from an autopsy, including a toxicology report, will take weeks but Baltzell said that Morales had been in his apartment with his roommate and friends who had come to town for the event, known commonly as “Unofficial,” and that Morales “had been drinking.”

Morales’s death was the third fatality during Unofficial, according to Robin Kaler, university spokeswoman. One woman died in 2006 after the motorcycle she was on crashed, and a man was killed in 2011 after two vehicles hit him, she said.

Unofficial was launched about 21 years ago by a Champaign bar owner after noticing he was losing business on St. Patrick’s Day because the holiday often falls during spring break, Kaler said. Instead, Unofficial takes place before students leave for break and “is typically celebrated by donning green clothing and regalia and consuming large quantities of alcohol with friends at a bar or private party, often starting early in the morning,” according to a history of the day.

“That’s the sole purpose of Unofficial: excessive drinking,” Kaler tells PEOPLE.

The “fake holiday,” she said, has become a “destination event,” attracting students from other Illinois campuses as well as those from around the nation, as determined by data compiled from police and hospital reports.

In the past, some students showed up to class drunk or tried to smuggle alcohol into classrooms, she said.

The university, police and city have tried reining in the revelry with a variety of measures the day of or in the weeks before Unofficial, including police officers going door-to-door talking to students about responsible drinking, raising the age at which patrons can enter bars to 21 that day from 18 or 19 the rest of the year, limiting packaged alcohol sales, banning guests in the dorms that weekend and sending letters to parents asking them to speak to their children about their behavior.

“We would like very much for it to never happen again,” Kaler says of Unofficial. “It’s a danger to our students …We lost a young man. That’s absolutely tragic.”

Robert Jones, the university’s chancellor, also lamented the loss of Morales. “We must find a way to work together as a community to end this event and avoid more senseless tragedy,” he said.

Morales was a junior studying communication at the Champaign-Urbana campus of the state’s flagship university, Kaler said.

One of his instructors described him as a “bright spot” in her business communications class.

“When you teach at 9 a.m. three times a week, it’s tough to have students who are consistently present, awake, and ready to jump in,” said Kate Ditewig-Morris. “Jon Morales was one of those students.”

Morales, she said, was “always engaged, smiling, and respectful to me and the other students in class. Slightly older than the others, Jon was establishing himself as a solid anchor among the others… I shall miss him very, very much.”

A GoFundMe page has been started to help Morales’ family with funeral expenses.

Colleen Atwood Talks “Fantastic Beasts” at Swarovski pre-BAFTA Event

BEAUTY AND BEASTS: “I have a more minimalist sensibility, so the rawness of New York in the Twenties really drew me in,” said Colleen Atwood, costume designer behind the BAFTA-nominated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
Ahead of the annual BAFTA awards in London on Sunday, Feb. 12, Atwood talked about the process of designing the costumes for J.K. Rowling’s adventure film, as well as for past works such as “Alice in Wonderland” and “Sleepy Hollow,” at Swarovski’s costume design master class this weekend.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them” is nominated for best costume design, alongside “La La Land,” “Jackie,” “Allied” and “Florence Foster Jenkins.” Atwood’s work for “Beasts” has also been nominated for an Oscar.
Atwood said she was primarily drawn to New York in the Twenties, the movie’s backdrop, and to the possibilities of a new life that the city presented at the time. “It was a time when ‘modern’ was becoming accessible. The city’s most developing neighborhoods, such as the Lower East Side, Harlem or the Bronx, drew a constant flow of immigrants, and became the background of the story, bringing it to life,” said Atwood who oversaw more than 3,500 fittings for the film’s extras.

Atwood said she was

The Dubai Film Festival Diaries: A Classy End to a Life-Changing Event

2016-12-17-1481972147-7016000-img.jpg OK, I’ll just preface this by saying that were the majority of film reviews written by women, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would never have been made. I’m probably a Star Trek girl through and through because I like a little reflection to go along with my entertainment. Not a whole lot of references to things I know nothing about nor want to particularly find out. But more on the film that closed this year’s Dubai International Film Festival later in the blog.

The reason that DIFF exists and just celebrated its glorious thirteenth edition is primarily to showcase and support the ever-growing Arab cinema industry. Yet we all know that a festival without international stars, great world premieres and exclusive parties would not be on anyone’s radar for very long. And this year, DIFF brought to Dubai Hollywood royalty like Andie MacDowell and Samuel L. Jackson, HBO’s Westworld stars Jeffrey Wright and Luke Hemsworth, filmmaker extraordinaire Asif Kapadia, world-class composer Gabriel Yared and Indian superstars of past, present and future Rekha, Om Puri and Ranveer Singh. Along with of course the great auteurs from the Region like Yousry Nasrallah and Magdy Ahmed Aly, as well as world festival favorites like Hedi by Mohamed Ben Attia and Layla M. by Mijke De Jong. The red carpets were plentiful, the atmosphere electrifying and the result of the seven days and eight nights was a festival like no other — where media, filmmakers and audiences alike could enjoy the beauty of Dubai and absorb as much cinema as their appetite allowed.

As I waited one morning to interview Jeffrey Wright and Luke Hemsworth about Westworld, I listened in on their conversation with other members of the media. I have loved Wright’s honest acting since I watched him in Julian Schnabel‘s Basquiat and I follow his blunt yet so needed Tweets on social media. The man doesn’t dwindle around serious issues. For example, see below.

So, I did what I did back in Berlin with Gianfranco Rosi, at the beginning of his journey with his documentary Fire at Sea — I used the waiting time to color my interview. The host of the Arabic version of a well-known US entertainment TV magazine asked Wright if he could say a few words in Arabic, and Wright admitted that he’d learned some Arabic twenty years ago and at that time “I learned to love Umm Kulthum then, I love her music!” It was warming to hear him say those words as the Egyptian singing legend has become for me inseparable from this Region. Everywhere I go, be it a shop in a mall, a restaurant or even at gala events, her haunting voice is the soundtrack of Dubai, and beyond.

When he was asked about the recent US election, Wright also managed to put into words what we’ve all been feeling by saying, “America is going through an interesting phase right now. I think it’s going to be an interesting next few years.” Most of us have been feeling like the real work begins now and hearing Wright address that by pointing out that the election had brought out “a real awakening of people who are concerned about tolerance and social justice all the things that the results of this election seem to have cast aside,” made me hopeful. He finally added, “America is a big country. And we’re stronger than any one person. America is really not defined by its presidents, it’s defined by its people. At the end of the day I hope we become a better country and progress forward. I’m hopeful that at the end of the day we’ll keep progressing forward as we have.”

When the time came for his co-star Luke Hemsworth, the young Australian actor wasn’t as lucky with his questions. “Do you feel bad that you’re the shortest of all the Hemsworth brothers?” The host chimed in. I am often baffled by the complete lack of any class in TV journalism. Not that print media is that much better, but at least we have a time delay from when we formulate stupid questions to when we actually transcribe the interview to realize the errors of our ways… Anyway, Hemsworth was kind, and quick on his feet. “They stole all my food when I was growing up!” He replied, and I secretly giggled, at the TV host, while clapping inside for the star.

I’d come to DIFF really craving to finally meet in person Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya, as well as watch on the big screen, where it belongs, their masterpiece creation The Cinema Travellers. Back when the film premiered in Cannes, their publicist and our common friend had sent me a link to watch the documentary and write a little something about it. Sitting in my favorite corner of my apartment, holding their jewel of a film in my hands, I felt like I had just been handed a gift. My world became part of theirs for nearly 100 minutes, and I was immersed in the wonderful joy of cinematic magic. But watching it then in Dubai, on the big screen where most films belong, was like discovering a whole new film within The Cinema Travellers, like finding new visual and emotional clues that I could never have imagined on the screen of my laptop. And meeting Abraham and Madheshiya in person finally solved the puzzle of how such a beautiful film could ever have been made… It took two beautiful human beings, that’s how!

DIFF this year was also about fashion. For me, the festival always holds its finger on the pulse of what Dubai fashionistas are wearing, but for its thirteenth edition, they went one step further. While people lined up for the Middle East premiere of the Will Smith starrer Collateral Beauty, we were all treated to a fashion show on the red carpet, organized by the Dubai Design District, also known as D3, and Fashion Forward Dubai. Five designers who create and sell in the Region — Zareena, Amato, Michael Cinco, Ezra and Hussein Bazaza — presented their evening looks in front of DIFF Managing Director Shivani Pandya, the Executive Director of Operations Mahsa Motamedi and yours truly, all sitting in the privileged front row. I loved the flavor of fashion on the red carpet, this time even overshadowing the celebrities and the films for a few minutes. But of course, I always feel fashion provides the perfect frame to cinema and art.

There was also an announcement during this year’s festival that felt like the right thing at just the right time. As the shortlist for the Foreign Language Academy Awards seems to have completely ignored cinema from the MENA region this year, the Arab Film Institute will hopefully step in. A new entity that promises to “promote, inspire, preserve, educate, support, influence and engage Arab film professionals under one roof,” the AFI has brought together producers, filmmakers, political figures and critics to create a database that may eventually give birth to an award platform for the Middle East, from the Middle East and within the Middle East.

Of course, there was cinema at DIFF, films to satiate even the hungriest of cinema goer. For me, the event closed with two works, one I loved, and one I could really have lived without.

2016-12-17-1481972765-7820547-still_124029.jpg

Magdi Ahmed Ali’s Mawlana (The Preacher) felt to me like it should have been named “The Prophet” since on the day it premiered it hauntingly foretold of the day’s events. Mawlana tells the story of a moderate Imam, a religious leader followed and beloved by those around him, yet whose tolerant views are being challenged every day, by what happens in the world. It doesn’t hurt that the film stars Egyptian actor Amr Saad in the lead role and his charisma and restrained demeanor as Sheikh Hatem El Shennawi really sell the film to the audience. But perhaps most haunting for me was discovering the scene of a Coptic Christian church bombing which had just occurred before the film’s red carpet, sending chills up my spine. When a beautiful, touching film has that prophetic feel to it, I can’t help but find it a winner.

2016-12-17-1481972844-8377946-150188_gal_968_645_poster.jpg

So now onto DIFF’s closing night film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This felt like an overdrawn, too dark and too full of references to things I know nothing about, video game. Granted, if you are a huge Star Wars fans it will be a treat to find Peter Cushing resurrected by CGI as the Imperial Officer Grand Moff Tarkin from the 1977 original Star Wars: A New Hope. Thrilling? Well it would have been if the 3D glasses I found on my seat weren’t used and therefore smudged beyond what any cleaning could do to them and the images of Cushing felt inconsistent throughout. His presence didn’t do it for me. I get it that Star Wars fans will celebrate anything to do with the franchise, from T-shirts (even I had to get an overpriced one of Darth Vader dressed as an Arab dictator) to merchandise to yes, tired old films. But what is up with Felicity Jones and those constant “meaningful” looks she shoots at her co-stars? Having just watched her in The Tempest, I can’t say her acting has gotten any better with age. And don’t get me started on Diego Luna, a brilliant actor who is completely miscast here. His accent gives Captain Cassian Andor a Speedy Gonzales feel I just could not get over and I giggled each time he opened his mouth. I did like Riz Ahmed, but I’ve liked him in each and every role he’s played since The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

Am I being PC about this? Probably not, but I haven’t felt this strongly about how much I hated a film in a long, long while… Yes, the red carpet with the Chewbacca crew was fun, but other than that, as I said, I’m a Trekkie through and through.

Finally, a thank you to the festival, its organizers and the publicists who made my life so perfectly organized and pleasant for the past week or so. This edition of the Dubai International Film Festival was indeed a “Lucky 13” one for me and receiving the thank you note that I’ve posted as the header image of this piece, the day after DIFF ended, was the cherry on the cake. From the opening gala and party to the closing night film and big bash, with a live soundtrack provided by the Reyes Heritage (the sons of the Gypsy Kings) there wasn’t a dull moment or a sour note for Dubai, throughout. And the logo created by local designer Ash Chagla of Science Sunshine proved to bring just as much luck as it promised.

Till next year DIFF, from December 6th to the 13th, 2017 — Inshallah.

Mini Creates A/D/O, a Design-Oriented Work and Event Space in Brooklyn

The root of the yet-to-be-opened shared space A/D/O in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, will be its Design Academy, a set-up that is meant to foster innovative work and interdisciplinary debate.
Installations, exhibitions, workshops and events will be held in the 23,000-square-foot former warehouse at 29 Norman Avenue, which will be aimed at design professionals. The inaugural one will be “Utopia vs. Dystopia: Designing Our Imagined Futures,” underlining the influence design has on this rapidly changing society. Brooklyn-based Narchitects created open spaces, more quiet breakout rooms, a 16-foot-high mirrored skylight with room for ancillary pieces from guest artists and designers. The first one on deck will be Brooklyn’s Mike Perry, who is working on a rooftop installation.
Interestingly, Mini founded A/D/O, as part of the company’s own design practice and interest in advancements that improve urban life. A/D/O will also be home to the headquarters of Urban-X, a start-up accelerator by Mini and SOSV that offers mentorship, seed capital investment, introduction to a network of global investors and access to leading technology and policy institutions in New York through citywide partners. The mission of it all is “Engineering the City as a Service.”
Through a series of alliances, the facility will offer design-minded initiatives including a

Deadly Auroras? The Carrington Event Threat: Solar Superstorms and the Risk of Devastating Blackouts and Electric Grid Damage from Massive Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMD)

This comprehensive and up-to-date ebook presents the complex story behind the threat posed by massive solar storms to the electric grid. There is growing concern that a repeat of the colossal “Carrington-event” storm of 1859, or even the lesser 1921 solar storm, could wreak unprecedented havoc on America’s electric power system, potentially causing prolonged blackouts. In a worst-case scenario, some researchers believe that a giant solar storm could catastrophically damage hundreds of huge high-voltage transformers critical to the grid; since the replacement of these components could take years, unimaginable consequences are possible. Here we have compiled dozens of official documents and reports that explain the threat and explore possible measures to limit the risk. Contents: Part 1: Overview of the Threat * Part 2: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Material * Part 3: U.S. Congressional Hearings * Part 4: Department of Homeland Security Evaluation * Part 5: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Material * Part 6: Secure Grid ’11: Electrical Grid Crisis Tabletop Exercise * Part 7: Large Power Transformer Study Report * Part 8: Space Weather * Part 9: The Sun, the Earth, and Near-Earth Space: A Guide. The nation’s power grid is vulnerable to the effects of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a sudden burst of electromagnetic radiation resulting from a natural or man-made event. EMP events occur with little or no warning and can have catastrophic effects, including causing outages to major portions of the U.S. power grid possibly lasting for months or longer. Naturally occurring EMPs are produced as part of the normal cyclical activity of the sun while man-made EMPs, including Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) devices and High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP), are produced by devices designed specifically to disrupt or destroy electronic equipment or by the detonation of a nuclear device high above the earth’s atmosphere. Young Royals Head to Charity Event and Rugby Match

DOUBLE DUTY: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were at work over the weekend, celebrating World Mental Health Day with a visit to a charity in London. They attended an event held by Mind, a charity that aids people suffering from mental health problems, at Harrow College, where they met with young people and joined a workshop to learn about some of the relevant issues. The Duchess wore a black and white printed Tory Burch dress, the same one she donned during the royal tour to New Zealand in 2014.
Later on Saturday, the royal couple headed to Twickenham Stadium to watch Australia beat Wales in the Rugby World Cup, where she wore a gray Reiss coat.
The Duke and Duchess are avid rugby supporters, and have attended a number of matches during the World Cup.

Calvin Klein Turns Up at Moncler Event, Highlights His Plans for a Book

CALVIN IN DEVELOPMENT: Latecomers to Moncler’s “Art For Love” dinner Thursday night at the New York Public Library missed Calvin Klein giving the exhibition his full attention.
Curious about Fabien Baron’s curation of the exhibition and how he wrangled the 32 featured photographers, Klein wanted to see for himself. Baron, whom Klein first worked with in the early Nineties, was one of several of his go-to photographers who mingled nearby. “It’s so well-done.” Klein said.
Another emissary of his past, Richard Avedon’s grandson Michael took a moment for a quick hello, telling Klein how he was recently looking at some of the work the designer had done with the prized photographer. And apparently so has Klein, who is in the early stages of a new book.
“I’ve been going through thousands of images that ran in advertising or that didn’t run. There are these amazing photographs that I think would be interesting to see, especially now because people don’t do that so much any more.” said Klein, noting how social media has cut short the long-form advertising he once favored. “I used to do 27-page campaigns. When I did a Vanity Fair outsert, I think it was 99 pages or something. I mean,

Donald Trump Discusses Ties With David Herzka at Campaign Event

ONLY IN AMERICA: Opportunistic designer David Herzka really tied one on with Donald Trump Sunday morning, but not in the colloquial sense. During a rise-and-shine breakfast at the Long Branch, N.J., home of his daughter Ivanka’s in-laws Seryl and Charles Kushner, Trump mingled with 100 or so of their inner circle. “It was pretty low-key. But he’s very serious and believes in what he’s doing,” Herzka said. “Everyone felt he’s really a potential contender.”
The Kushners’ enterprising son, Jared, made the rounds with Ivanka, but another power couple — his venture capitalist-skilled brother Joshua and Karlie Kloss — were not on the scene. Trump’s son-in-law no doubt has his reserve of potential campaign supporters as owner of Kushner Properties and the New York Observer.
Herzka, who started his direct-to-consumer online neckwear line David Fin earlier this year, showed his own moxie by having a word with The Donald and giving him a tie in what he thought would be the candidate’s favorite colors — red, white and blue. Herzka told Trump about the Battery Park-based start-up that makes all of its ties in the U.S. and donates $ 5 of each $ 85 sale to Hiring Our Heroes, a nonprofit that helps veterans find

Techniques of Event History Modeling

Techniques of Event History Modeling

Including new developments and publications which have appeared since the publication of the first edition in 1995, this second edition: *gives a comprehensive introductory account of event history modeling techniques and their use in applied research in economics and the social sciences; *demonstrates that event history modeling is a major step forward in causal analysis. To do so the authors show that event history models employ the time-path of changes in states and relate changes in causal variables in the past to changes in discrete outcomes in the future; and *introduces the reader to the computer program Transition Data Analysis (TDA). This software estimates the sort of models most frequently used with longitudinal data, in particular, discrete-time and continuous-time event history data. Techniques of Event History Modeling can serve as a student textbook in the fields of statistics, economics, the social sciences, psychology, and the political sciences. It can also be used as a reference for scientists in all fields of research.

Reese Witherspoon Breaks Out The ‘Bend And Snap’ At Walmart Event

Elle Woods, is that you?

While hosting a Walmart shareholders meeting in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday, Reese Witherspoon taught one Walmart employee a little trick she picked up from her role in “Legally Blonde.” It’s called the Bend and Snap, and in case you didn’t know, it has a 98 percent success rate in getting a man’s attention and an 83 percent rate of return on a dinner invitation.

Apparently, it also helps Walmart employees look super cute while stocking shelves:

Don’t Miss Provincetown’s Film Festival, An Unofficially Queer Cultural Event By The Beach

Unassuming is the name of the game in P-town, a quirky beach community at the tip of Cape Cod. But the Provincetown International Film Festival, now in its 17th year, consistently delivers one of the finest cultural events in the region. As always, a delightfully queer lineup underscores the outstanding selection of narrative features, documentaries and shorts.

The festival kicks off on June 17 with writer-director Leslye Headland’s “Sleeping with Other People,” exploring the complexities of monogamy. From James Franco, “I Am Michael,” the dramatization of a buzzy 2011 New York Times article about gay activist Michael Glatze, closes out the week on June 21.

“The independent filmmaking community continues to produce remarkably high quality work, here and abroad, and our feature lineup is a testament to that!” said Connie White, artistic director of PIFF. “We are thrilled to welcome these new films and filmmakers to Provincetown in June, and we know that filmgoers will be engaged and entertained by these adventurous, thought-provoking and accomplished films.”

The lineup for PIFF 2015:

Boston Concertgoers Hospitalized After Experiencing Medical Issues During Avicii Event At TD Garden

BOSTON (AP) — Many people who attended an electronic dance music show featuring Swedish disc jockey Avicii at the TD Garden arena on Wednesday showed up intoxicated and several were hospitalized, authorities said.

TD Garden spokeswoman Tricia McCorkle said that at Wednesday night’s Avicii concert “there were a number of transports due to medical issues.” The Emergency Medical Service took 22 people to the hospital, and a dozen more were under evaluation, EMS Deputy Superintendent Mike Bosse told the Boston Herald. Bosse said he contacted the Boston Police Licensing Division, which cited the TD Garden for allowing lots of intoxicated concertgoers to enter.

Avicii spokeswoman Diana Baron said she was waiting for a full report from the venue and promoter.

Two people died over the weekend at a Las Vegas music festival attended by Avicii, one of the biggest names in electronic dance music. Authorities said Monday it will take several weeks to determine what caused the deaths of the Electric Daisy Carnival fans.

Police said nearly 800 people were treated for medical conditions and 25 were hospitalized during the three-night electronic music festival, which organizers said drew about 400,000 people at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Festival organizers told police that 134,000 fans attended Friday, Saturday and Sunday night shows featuring pulsing lights, Ferris wheels, seven stages of music and DJs including Avicii, Diplo, Afrojack and Tiesto.
