5 Dating Fears Everyone Has

As a dating mentor, I often hear from singles about the painful side of dating; the fears, the insecurities and the nagging voice inside each one of us that says, “You’re not good enough.” There are external fears that may have developed over the years. Maybe your mother, friend, matchmaker or random neighbor kept trying to set you up unsuccessfully and then blaming you when it didn’t work out. Your greatest fears may also come from within – your inner critic. “You aren’t doing what you should be doing, trying hard enough, or praying with enough intent. Otherwise, obviously, you would be married by now.”

Dating fears are normal and so are you! Let’s talk about some of the most common dating fears, and what you can do about them – starting now.

1. I’m never going to get married.

This fear hurts. It is the core of all the other fears. It has crossed the mind of virtually every person who has ever been hurt in the dating process. If you are like most singles, you aren’t married because you haven’t yet identified the right one. I’m confident you’ve been keeping your eyes open. While you may have had an expectation of when you wanted to get married, God has the master timeline. I don’t pretend to have an answer as to why you are not married yet. I can’t predict the future. What I do know is that God specifically prepares a match for each soul.

If you have the fear that you’ll never get married you’re in good company. Having not yet met the right one is pretty common these days. However, just because you haven’t met the right one doesn’t mean you won’t meet him or her and get married. Being single is your current situation, not your destiny. Now is the time to work on loving yourself. You are getting married, and you’ll need self-love and love-of-other to keep you married.

2. What if I have to settle?

Let’s define “settle.” Many singles think of settling as defeat or a concession to mediocrity. But settling can also mean adjusting your list of “absolute musts” that Mr. or Mrs. Right requires in order to merit consideration. Look at your list. Is it time to update or reprioritize? Certain qualities, like kindness, respect and loyalty, should never be considered unimportant. I am talking about the other bullet points, such as “well-traveled,” “has a PhD,” “wealthy,” “6’2” or “snappy dresser”… Just take a look. Settling may not mean what you think it means.

3. I’m not attractive/thin/wealthy/young/(insert your favorite self-criticism) enough.

God did not make you the way you were by accident. We know that God has an Ultimate Plan and that it is for the good. You were born at exactly the right moment, to precisely the right parents and unique circumstances to allow you to become the inimitable person reading this article. You are not only enough; you are just the way you are supposed to be in this moment. This doesn’t release you from the obligation to continue becoming who you need to be. Growth is good, but so is self-acceptance!

4. No one wants me.

Sit down in a quiet place and make a list of all the positive qualities, talents and skills that you have. Leave nothing out, big or small. Read this list twice daily, morning and evening, for a week. (Trust me and do this. It really makes a difference!) I hope you will realize that just as you have family and friends who love you and want to be around you, so too you will have a spouse who wants and loves you.

5. There must be something wrong with me.

Maybe there is something wrong, maybe not. Now is the time for some honest soul searching. Is there a negative character trait or two that you have always wanted to get rid of? If so, this may be the right time to do some spiritual housecleaning to make you into a better version of yourself.

We will never be perfect beings; we were created imperfect intentionally. So yes, there is something wrong with you, and with me too! You don’t have to be perfect to be married; you just need to be working on perfecting yourself. Those who are faced with a physical handicap, an emotional disorder or are a carrier of genetic disease face another hurdle: Realizing that what you have doesn’t define you. You are every bit as worthy!

Pay attention and notice what tales your inner storyteller is spinning. This is the same voice that tells you not to bother asking for that promotion because you won’t get it anyway, the same one that instructs you not to even try to reach your dreams. It is unlikely you would ever say these things to anyone else, yet you speak to yourself this way!

Where there is darkness, insert light. Fear and depression come to fill a hole inside us. Instead of fears, fill that hole with kindness and laughter. Fear overwhelms us when we neglect to appreciate the beauty in our lives. It’s true, you cannot control where, when and how you will meet the right one. You can, however, control how you spend your time until you meet your soul mate.

Live now. Be present. Be joyous. Be nice to yourself. Be the best version of yourself.

What have you found works to banish your fears? Comment below.

Everyone Is Confused By This Student’s Prom Proposal Sign

Texas high school student Marlen Williams created a basketball-themed sign to ask his friend to the prom. He presented it to her with a toy basketball, she read the sign and, apparently, she said yes.

Williams shared the beautiful moment on his Twitter account on Monday. Happily ever after, right?

Wrong.

Twitter, being the cruel and fickle place that it is, pounced on Williams’ sign, claiming it was confusing, incoherent and disobeyed the laws of grammar. Hundreds of people took it upon themselves to tell him so.

“It’s crazy how viral something can get that’s unplanned,” Williams told The Huffington Post. “When I was making the poster, I never imagined all of this.”

Despite all the digital commotion, Williams’ sign does have a coherent and witty message. The words were just awkwardly placed.

The sign reads:

You’ll run the 1, I’ll be 2. I’d love to take a shot at prom with you. #12

It’s basketball jargon referring to players’ positions on the court, and Williams, a shooting guard for his school’s basketball team, was just being sweet.

If you still can’t read it, helpful Twitter users photoshopped the sign so it would be easier to read.

Even though his sign was a tad bit jumbled, Williams can ignore all the internet trolls. After all, his date did say yes.

Ed Sheeran’s First Date with Girlfriend Was Taylor Swift’s July 4 Party: ‘You’re Like, “Holy F—, I Know Everyone Here!”‘

Did Ed Sheeran‘s girlfriend get longtime friend Taylor Swift‘s stamp of approval? Yes — and then some!

“Well, our anniversary is her 4th of July party,” Sheeran, 26, tells PEOPLE of risk advisory consultant Cherry Seaborn, 24, whom he began dating in the summer of 2015 after Swift hosted them at her famous Independence Day fête at her Rhode Island home.

“I’ve known Cherry since I was 11,” adds the “Shape of You” singer — whose third album ÷ debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — of his girlfriend. “She worked on Wall Street in New York, and I had like six shows .”

“It was around then, and we reconnected. I went on tour again, and then I went to Taylor’s 4th of July party. I was texting , and she was like, ‘I’m in Rhode Island at a 4th of July party,’ and I was like, ‘So am I.’ I kinda said to Taylor, ‘Can I invite one of my old schoolmates?’ The rest is history.”

Indeed, last summer, Sheeran and Seaborn celebrated their one-year anniversary at Swift’s 2016 soirée, as documented by Swift’s childhood pal Abigail Anderson on Instagram.

Swift’s annual summer bashes have fueled headlines the past few years, with squad members from Karlie Kloss and Blake Lively to Gigi Hadid and Cara Delevingne descending on her estate for the holiday weekend.

“It’s just a load of like-minded people that you would never expect to see in the same place, together,” Sheeran says of the parties. “I found myself chatting to Ryan Reynolds for a long time, and I did not expect to see him there. ’s kind of a magnet for like-minded people, and they’re always super-sweet. Anyone that’s around her is very, very nice. It’s a fun party. But it’s a lot of stories. You walk in, and you’re like, ‘Holy f—! I know everyone in here!’ It’s cool.”
For more on Ed Sheeran, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands everywhere Friday.

FROM COINAGE: This Is How Long You’ll Have to Work to Make as Much Money as Rihanna’s Hit ‘Work’

In addition to providing a space for Sheeran’s relationship to blossom, Swift and Seaborn have become friends themselves, the “Castle on the Hill” singer says.

“Her and Taylor have hung out without me quite a few times; I think they have gal chats,” he says. “I don’t know what they get up to, talking about cats or whatever.”

Sheeran’s new album ÷ is out now; he’ll kick off his North American tour on June 29.

People Are Putting Makeup On Their Thighs. Is Everyone OK?

There are plenty of more pressing matters in the world to make sense of right now, but in the name of self-care, it’s important to ponder the “whys” of some smaller, non-sensical happenings on the internet.

Like, for example, the fact that people have been painting full faces of makeup on their thighs, and sharing them on Instagram

Teen Vogue spotted a phenomenon of people applying makeup on their upper thighs, and a quick Instagram search shows people are doing the same on their upper arms, as well.

There’s quite a bit of skill required to pull off some of these looks, but still ― we have to ask of the more than 1,000 Instagrammers who published arm makeup posts … why?

Perhaps it’s a way for makeup lovers to get their fix without piling makeup on their faces. Or, like the 100 layers videos and other odd beauty fads before it, perhaps the trend is just visually stimulating and fun to watch.

Pantsuit Nation Is Becoming A Book, And Not Everyone Is Pleased

Just over a month after the private Facebook group for Hillary Clinton supporters exploded into a massive national support group, Pantsuit Nation has a book deal.

The group’s founder, Libby Chamberlain, shared the news in a Facebook post on Monday night, writing, “The book will further our mission and the premise that stories give meaning to action and that meaningful action leads to long-term, sustainable change.”

Founded not long before the 2016 election, the group originally was intended to encourage people to wear Clinton’s trademark outfit to the polls. In the days since, the Pantsuit Nation group became a space where Clinton voters retreated to bolster each other and share stories of their experiences with post-Nov. 8 shock, encounters with bigotry, and more ― some stories inspiring, some heartbreaking.

In her announcement, posted to the private group’s public page, Chamberlain emphasized that the book would be drawn from the group and would be a comfort object of sorts:

A Pantsuit Nation book. A book of YOU. A book BY YOU. A permanent, beautiful, holdable, snuggle-in-bed-able, dogear-able, shareable, tearstainable book. Your voices. Your stories. Our community. Our project. Our message of hope and change.

The post quickly sparked reaction ― but despite the cheery tone of Chamberlain’s original revelation, much of the response was outraged. Some members castigated her for capitalizing on the experiences of marginalized women and minorities, while others expressed frustration that the private, safe space of the Pantsuit Nation group would be mined for public content. Still, others expressed excitement, including Refinery29, which deemed it a modern Chicken Soup for the Soul in advance.

On Twitter, critics of the project aired their skepticism:

In her Facebook post, Chamberlain also announced that she had “filed the paperwork to establish Pantsuit Nation as 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations. These organizations will support the advocacy, education, and political action efforts we have already seen grow out of Pantsuit Nation.”

More information on the plans for these nonprofit efforts were not included, nor did the announcement include details as to where proceeds from the book would be channeled. A query to Pantsuit Nation’s press contact had not been answered as of publication time.

“You are a force, Pantsuit Nation,” Chamberlain concluded. “Let’s see if we can harness that force within the pages of a book and see it on nightstands and coffee tables all around the world.” As powerful as books can be, channeling a large, politically motivated group into a coffee table anthology might seem to be aiming a little low.

10 Things Everyone With An Opposite-Sex Bestie Knows To Be True

Rom-coms like “When Harry Met Sally” are at least partially responsible for planting the misguided idea that men and women are incapable of being “just friends” without eventually falling in love or having sex.

We recently asked real-life, opposite-sex best friends to set the record straight once and for all. Below, 10 things opposite-sex besties wish other people understood about their bond:

1. We love each other (as friends!) but We. Are. Not. Attracted. To. Each. Other.

“Ryan and I have been best friends for 16 years. He’s been my roommate on two separate occasions, including once with my then-boyfriend. We have never so much as even kissed. Truly no attraction, just a deep bond. Our respective significant others have handled it differently over the years, but eventually they all realized it will forever be platonic. He is my best friend. My big brother. He taught me to drive a car, I taught him how to cook. We love each other like family. We fight like family sometimes too, but that’s what makes it special.” ― Channing L.

2. The friendship isn’t a threat to our romantic relationships.

“If the trust is there between you and your spouse and your best friend, it works fine. My best friend Jason was in my wedding and is now good friends with my husband. And my husband’s best friend Christen was also in our wedding and has become one of my closest friends. If anything the best friend is an ally to your spouse because they can exchange advice on how to deal with you!” – Kayla D.

3. But some romantic partners just won’t understand it.

“I’ve had problems in dating where people don’t trust me or the other person in my friendship. Too many people are putting too much emphasis on sex. I don’t know about you, but I can honestly say I’m not sexually attracted to every single person on the planet and I can find value in a person other than what’s in their pants. Imagine that.” ― Jesse E.

4. Everyone ― from waiters to people on the street ― assumes we are husband and wife.

“My friend Chris and I have been friends for 23 years and now as married adults (just not married to each other!), there is a stigma about our friendship. Our spouses don’t care that we are still great friends but when we are out together, people assume we are married to each other. So to counter those assumptions, we make jokes like, ‘I’m one of the wives…’” ― Erica W.

5. Or that we’ve had sex.

“Everybody will think you slept together. And even when you try to explain how that would be so unfathomable, unthinkable, and probably impossible, they think you’re lying.” ― Kira L.

6. Or that we’re secretly in love.

“Jeff and I are best friends and there are people that refuse to believe that after 28 years, we haven’t at some point liked each other or had something going on. Anyone who really knows us knows we are like brother and sister and protect each other as such. We have love and respect for each other’s spouses and I think the old argument that men and women can’t be just friends is sexist.” ― Lauren Carter

7. Well-meaning people will inevitably ask eye-rolling questions.

“Cole and I have been through a lot together. We’ve also been to a lot of parties or social gatherings together. At these gatherings, there’s always at least one person who will ask one of many annoying questions ranging from ‘Why we haven’t mashed our fun bits together?’ to ‘When will the wedding invitations will be in the mail?’ The one I’ve grown to resent the most is, ‘You guys should really date, you’re so perfect together!’ Please excuse me while my eyes roll completely to the back of my head. The fact that we are so good together and have managed to stay friends is because at some point in our 17-year friendship, we drew a line in the sand and we knew not to cross it if we wanted to keep our friendship strong. So that’s exactly what we’ve done.” ― Natalie F.

8. And critics might just be projecting their own insecurities.

“Any time a man or woman has expressed disbelief in the existence of opposite-sex, platonic friendships [to me], it has always been due to a serious case of projection. Just because you can’t maintain platonic, opposite-sex friendships doesn’t mean that everyone else is suspect. I’ve met a lot of men and women whose blanket disapproval of their partners’ opposite-sex friendships stems from a personal history of being unfaithful, and the inability to keep it in their pants.” ― David D.

9. It’s possible to be affectionate with your bestie in a completely platonic way.

“My best friend and I are of the opposite sex, even though I technically identify as gender fluid. Yes, we sleep in the same bed. Yes, we cuddle. Yes, we show affection. Are we in a romantic relationship? No. We’re both gay. I think it’s important to understand that you can be affectionate and show love to someone of the opposite sex without them being your significant other. I love my friend very much and he loves me. It really bugs me when people make gibes at us and call us ‘lovers,’ especially since neither of us is interested in the opposite sex.” ― Calley T.

10. And it’s even possible to have a non-sexual friendship with someone you’ve had sex with in the past.

“Chris and I have been BFFs for like eight years now. We were in the Marine Corps together, did the dirty twice, and beyond all of that, have formed an incredibly solid friendship. He actually introduced me to my boyfriend because he felt that my boyfriend and I would click. He was 1000 percent correct. The thing I wish people knew about different-sex friendships is that just because you may have been horizontal with them at one point doesn’t mean it’s something that will happen again ― especially after a certain number of years of being each other’s wingperson. You know things about them (and they you) that make having sex super weird.” ― Rachael G.

5 Times John Green Offered Advice Everyone Should Follow

John Green has a way with words, even when they’re not on the pages of his best-selling books.

Between building up his Nerdfighter community with his brother, Hank, and racking up more than 4.5 million Twitter followers, Green has found time to offer words of wisdom in interviews and vlogs, through Tumblr posts and Reddit “Ask Me Anything” sessions. In honor of his 38th birthday on August 24 (which the author is celebrating by matching donations to Water.org), we’ve gathered some of his most inspiring messages. From talking about dating to opening up about mental health, here are five times John Green offered some wonderful nuggets of wisdom.

1. When he had the perfect response to a fan whose boyfriend said she was too smart for him.

In a video from 2010, Green responded to fans after asking them on Twitter if they were dealing with any problems. “My boyfriend says I’m too smart for him, but I really like him. Should I start acting stupid?” a fan asked. After turning into “a giant squid of anger,” he gave the best answer.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The Venn diagram of boys who don’t like smart girls and boys you don’t want to date is a circle.”

2. When he offered some kind words to a fan on Tumblr.

A 22-year-old fan with cerebral palsy who identifies as bisexual reached out to Green on Tumblr, asking “How are we to deal with prejudice that comes from within our own families?” Though Green began his humble reply by stating he didn’t know “how to give advice,” he offered an inspiring message.

I don’t know how to give advice but I just want to say that you are a human being, and you are important and cared for. Neither your disabilities nor your sexual orientation make you less human than any other person–you are complex and important and worthy of love. There are people–and I’m very sorry if such people are in your family–who seek to dehumanize the other. Maybe the are [sic] scared and maybe they are acting out systemic biases they inherited and maybe they don’t know how to include you in their overly narrow definition of personhood, but that is not about you. That is not your fault. You are not broken or wrong; the social order is.

3. When he gave advice for those figuring out what to do with their lives.

Study broadly and without fear. Learn a language if you can because that will make your life more interesting. Read a little bit every day. But most importantly try to surround yourself with people you like and make cool stuff with them. In the end, at least in my experience, what you do isn’t going to be nearly as interesting or important as who you do it with.

4. When he opened up about his mental health.

During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, a fan asked Green if he had any advice for “people who suffer from depression and the like.” The author answered by talking about his own mental health before closing with some encouraging words.

There is hope. There is treatment. You are not alone, and while I know the struggle feels at times completely hopeless and futile, there is a far shore for the vast majority of people, and I wish you the best.

5. When he talked about what makes someone a “nerd” — and why it’s a good thing.

I love nerds! I am obsessed with nerds. I have a great affection for people who are intellectually engaged with the world, and who, who don’t treat everything superficially. And I think when people talk about nerdiness, what they’re really talking about is smart people who are trying to think hard about the world, and I don’t think that’s an insult, I think that’s a great thing.

And as a bonus, here’s one last quote from Green that might not count as wisdom, but still serves as some pretty solid advice.

Happy birthday, John!

Why Everyone Is Talking About Fan Bingbing’s Amazing Style

Students of red carpet glamour have certainly become familiar with Fan Bingbing—but everyone else? Get ready to have a new red carpet fave. The 33-year-old Chinese actress long-ago conquered international best-dressed lists (she was on Vanity Fair‘s tony Best Dressed list in 2012), but now she’s poised to get a bit more mainstream—Forbes just handed her the number four spot on its list of the year’s highest-paid actresses, reporting that she’s net a cool $ 21 million in 2015. For movie stars, there’s a pretty legit correlation between salary and red carpet know-how, so it’s no surprise that the well-paid actress has had plenty of time to nail formal wear, typically picking super-glam gowns.

We fell in love with her fairytale princess, blossom-covered Marchesa gown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but trust: It wasn’t an outlier, by any means.

A busy festival schedule had her packing multiple showstoppers. This Ralph & Russo couture beauty, with a long train and sleeves that draped elegantly behind her, was one of the red carpet’s most stunning numbers. Her jewels were by Chopard and clutch by Louis Vuitton (she’s an ambassador for the brand).

For the Shanghai Film Festival this summer she picked a velvet Stéphane Rolland couture gown with a partly sheer skirt. Her jewels are Chopard.

She wore Marchesa again to the Oscars in 2013, picking a vivid fuchsia ball gown that had walked down the label’s runway just days earlier.

And because two gorgeous gowns are always better than one, Bingbing changed before heading to Elton John’s post-ceremony party. Her peach Elie Saab couture gown had a regal embellished capelet that covered her shoulders and a skinny belt worn right at the waist. Her clutch is Roger Vivier.

For the Cannes red carpet that same year, she picked another strong solid-colored beauty. Her Elie Saab gown was a dusty goldenrod hue and featured an embellished top and belted waistline.

At Cannes the year prior it was more Elie Saab. This time, the gown relied on heavy beading and a high-necked cape rather than a princess skirt to make an impression.

A purple-pink strapless gown with a frothy skirt helped her make an extra-elegant appearance at the Shanghai Film Festival in 2011.

Bingbing pushed the sartorial envelope a bit more at that year’s Tokyo Film Festival. Her two-piece Jason Wu outfit paired an off-the-shoulder top with a high-low ball skirt (the raised front showed off super-high sparkly Christian Louboutin platform pumps). Her jewelry was Cartier.

Everyone Is Mad at Beyoncé, But for the Wrong Reasons

Mondays tend to be disorienting enough. But the events that transpired in the pop culture sphere this week set a particularly confusing tone to the day, forcing innocent consumers to question their loyalties and even, shockingly, suspect that the media may in fact not have the purest of intentions.

The action actually began on Sunday, when an unlikely source fiercely declared herself as a feminist, taking to social media to unleash an impassioned essay regarding the media’s dehumanizing depiction of women as mere arm candy accessorizing the appendages of successful men. “I… do not. belong. to anyone. but myself. and neither do you,” she wrote, chastising media outlets for perpetuating stale double standards and explicit misogyny. She name-dropped the likes of Gloria Steinem, called out the injustice of female slut-shaming and beseeched young women to recognize their truth worth and inherent value.

Ariana Grande: badass feminist.

Color me old (it’s cool, I am, what with being over 30and all that), but I am not intimately familiar with the nuances of Grande’s public persona. Perhaps she’s long been hailed a feminist icon, and I’ve simply been in the dark, but her essay felt groundbreaking, if not a little shocking (in the best way possible) when it came across my feed yesterday morning. In the context of famous young women continuously denying their right (obligation?) to identify as feminists, Grande stood up loud and proud and sent an incredibly important message to her young, impressionable fans, and to women all around the world: the media is fucked up, and you deserve better.

With the unexpected arrival of this declaration, things started out well on Monday. But quickly took a turn. It was early yet — just after 8 a.m. — and the day was filled with so much promise. But then Beyoncé appeared on my television screen and spent the next several minutes extolling the benefits of a vegan diet. Not the health benefits or the environmental payoff, however. No, Beyoncé really just wanted viewers to know that veganism is how she triumphed over her body, achieving that fit, trim figure admired the world over, and that we can follow in her dainty footsteps — all for the price of one best-selling diet book.

That’s right, just as Ariana Grande — pop princess, wearer of cat ears — revealed herself to the world as a strong, self-possessed female standing up for the empowerment of other women and girls, Beyoncé — fierce, outspoken feminist, champion of equality — told us her secret to flatter abs.

It was a confusing day, indeed.

I experience an overwhelming, almost visceral sense of uneasiness when I morally disagree on any issue with Beyoncé. I’m a superfan. I worship at her altar. I drink the Bey Kool-Aid. And she’s given me good reason to do so: Besides being a mind-blowing performer and entertainer, she’s an activist, arguably doing more to further the conversation on equality than any celebrity with her expansive influence. She drops speeches on feminism from Nigerian writer Chimamamda Ngozi Adichie smack dab in the middle of radio-friendly tracks. She performs proudly on MTV in front of a towering backdrop boldly emblazoned with the word “FEMINIST.” She’s dominated a notoriously male-run industry, successfully standing atop her own empire and supporting women every step of the way.

So when she has a slip-up, I wince a little.

And I wasn’t alone yesterday. I was heartened to log into Facebook and see a trending news story regarding the outrage Beyoncé fans were expressing over her morning announcement. I felt validated to know that others stood up and took notice, calling out the hypocrisy and degradation of this impossibly strong female role model taking to the airwaves to shill out a diet book.

But I quickly learned the legions of angry Beyhive members weren’t up in arms over the decidedly disempowering move. They were pissed because they expected a bigger announcement.

In fairness, the irritation is understandable.”Good Morning America” teased the three-minutes-and-change segment as if the singer were about to unveil a new album, tour, baby, documentary series and cure for cancer, all in one breath. The endorsement of a diet book she’d already publicly supported for months felt underwhelming to some, and insulting to many.

But I have yet to see any ire over the endorsement itself. The fact that a woman who has stood for so much more substance has stooped to plugging diet advice. A woman who has taken on society’s soul-crushing, oppressive beauty ideals in her song “Pretty Hurts,” is advocating veganism as a vehicle for sustained weight loss. A woman with over 35 million Instagram followers and sold-out stadiums worth of male and female fans is using her platform to sheepishly confess, “I am not naturally the thinnest,” on national television and that she’s finally found a food plan that “keeps the weight off.”

This isn’t the Beyoncé I know, love and admire, and the stumble is hard to stomach. It would be a flat-out lie to deny the fact that much of her fame has undoubtedly been influenced by her iconic body. But the agency Beyoncé took in displaying, flaunting, concealing and using her body onstage and onscreen differentiated her from other female performers who have seemingly been positioned as scantily-clad puppets selling iTunes singles. Beyoncé owned her body in a way that felt powerful. And surrendering that power in order to promote a diet book doesn’t feel relatable or real; it feels weak.

I’m grateful for the empowering messages Beyoncé and women like her have fearlessly put forward in the name of feminism. And I’m happily surprised to find that others in the public eye like Grande are opting to own their feminist convictions and unapologetically stand for something more than their looks, weight, or carefully-contoured faces. I just hope Beyoncé doesn’t continue to disappoint — the world is confusing enough.

Attention Everyone: The Rock Is Now An Experienced Wedding Officiant

What’s more romantic than entering into marital bliss with the love of your life, a pair of American flag pants, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson?

Thanks to Prank It Forward — the pranksters who believe in jokes for a good cause — “Screen Junkies” producer Nick Mundy thought he was walking into a disaster of a press junket for Johnson’s upcoming film “San Andreas.” Instead, he walked into his own wedding.

“I am officially ordained by the state of California. I go all out, because you’re my bestie,” Johnson declared, before walking Mundy down the aisle.

The two had built up a rapport over the course of past interviews — due in no small part to Mundy being a huge fan. But it’s clear that getting married by one of the wrestling world’s all-time greatest stars had never crossed Mundy’s mind. Johnson, for his part, delivered his lines smoothly.

“Nothing is more powerful than your union, carries more force than a bolt of lightning — or even the world’s largest earthquake,” he said. “Much like the one you’ll see in ‘San Andreas,’ in theaters May 29th. You can see it in 3D!”

Meahwhile, Mundy’s new wife Dilara deserves a trophy for Chillest Bride Ever.

6 Empowering Mantras Everyone Should Try

We already know the incredible benefits of meditation, and using a mantra can be a simple, profound (and totally free) way to impact your meditation practice and overall life. These mantras are designed to help you tap into the potential of your true spirit, and to make your sense of self and happiness more abundant and easy to access.

HOW IT WORKS:

There are many myths behind chanting, but it is widely agreed is that the more you chant and repeat a phrase, the more it becomes a part of you. Chanting a mantra can redefine your inner monologue, which is why they are used for more severe mental conditions such as anxiety. The more you repeat (chant) the mantra, the more you reframe your thinking to abide by it, replacing the old negative message which used to repeat in your head with the new more positive one.

DIRECTIONS:

These mantras are especially powerful in the aim to live your best life. Chant them internally or out loud for 5-20 minutes a day. If you can’t do a full five minutes, start with two minutes, and finish with 2-3 more minutes later the same day.

Keep the positivity going: Pin them, tack them up around your bathroom mirror or desk, or make them your iPhone background so when you check the time, you see these as a sweet little love letter to yourself.

These mantras are part of an 11-Day Mantra Challenge; you can find the complete series here.

I have everything I need
I have the power to love, to heal, and to grow. I need nothing else. I am not driven by worldly possessions or the affections of others. I exist to give rather than to take. My love is infinite, so I give it out freely without need for reimbursement. The less that I own, the freer I am.

I choose to be happy
I do not wait for happiness to find me. I cultivate happiness and love and express it outwardly, even in the face of fear. I have the power within me to let my happiness and joy shine outward, unblocked by uncertainty.
You can learn more about how to choose happiness in even your darkest times in this article.

I am a voice for peace
In all my actions and words, I speak for peace. I am an ambassador of peace and acceptance and compassion to myself and toward others. In everything I do, I take responsibility for my duty to create peace on this earth, and to share it and teach it to others. I practice peace deep within myself.

I am in control of my actions and emotions
Though I cannot control what happens to me, I can control my reactions. I am in control of how I treat and speak to others, and whether I take their comments and opinions personally. I am in control of what I share and give outwardly, and I choose to share love even during conflicts.

I am open
I am open to pain and to joy. I am open to the truth that I don’t have all the answers, nor do I need to have them. I am open to the universe revealing itself everywhere, all the time, even in unexpected places. I am open to possibility, to miracles, to the great surprises that life has to offer.

I will feed my soul, and allow it to bloom
I vow to feed my creativity, to fuel my curiosity. I vow to travel, to eat sweet treats and drink good coffee in the company of my fellow women. I vow to listen to inspiring music, to learn new skills and lessons and languages. I vow to dress up, to honor my body, to be sensual and loving. I vow to have fun dancing all night, and get rest taking glorious naps in the afternoon sun. I vow to drink more champagne and make more toasts with it. I vow to cook delicious meals for my family, to take my vitamins, to practice yoga whenever I feel like it. To speak kind words to myself. To indulge in new passions. And through it all, I vow to allow my soul to speak outwardly with excitement and abundant bliss. Because life is so short, and every day should be celebrated.

5 Things Everyone Should Know When First Diagnosed With Cancer

1. Do not read the Internet
There are many reasons I highly recommend not going to the Internet for answers, but the biggest one is that everybody’s experience with cancer is different. You will probably type on Google: “What is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma” and more than a million hits will appear. Eventually you will end up on a blog where someone tells you that the cancer you have is caused by something you did or didn’t do, is curable by doing something you’ve never heard of, or worse yet, told something so dire, it only serves to increase the sense of dread you are already feeling.

2. Ask questions
This is a far better solution than the Internet. When you have your first appointment with your doctor, ask him/her anything. If your doctor seems in a rush or doesn’t have time to answer your questions, then that is a good indication that maybe you need to get a new doctor. When first diagnosed, we (as cancer patients), are scared, vulnerable and often isolated. Our doctor is there to not only guide us, but our loved ones as well.

Have a list of questions. Have a family member or friend with you. Tape record the conversation. Anxiety will be high. It’s difficult to remember information when feeling anxious. Ask them anything because in most situations they will be more informative than the Internet, and should also be more reassuring. Your question could be as simple as “When do I start treatment?” Or as complicated as, “When should I start banking my sperm?”

3. Understand that there are no short-term solutions
As much as cancer sucks, you will not be better by tomorrow. Take a deep breath and try to take each day one step at time. Sounds cliché, but in reality that is the only way you will get through the hardest days. Giving yourself a goal (like getting back to work/school) is great, seeing that goal through is even better. Cancer is a diagnoses, not an identity conclusion. It is what you are battling, not who you are. Take a WIDE angle view of your life. It may be cancer for now, but it is not the story of your life, so don’t let cancer define you.

4. Enjoy the days when you feel good
Not every day is going to suck as a cancer patient. Yes, most will, but if you have chemo once every three weeks, most likely that second week you will start to feel more normal. So do normal things. Go to a concert, see a movie, go to a party (probably shouldn’t drink), but do things that will take your mind off of the hard situation you are in. If you have the ability to do fun activities in the midst of all the crap that you are or will be going through, then that will help you get through the tough days. It will also serve to remind you what you want to be getting back to when you are cancer-free!

5. Use the cancer card
No, I don’t mean like, “Hey guys. I have cancer, feel bad for me.” I mean like: apply for scholarships to help you or your family financially. There are many resources available. Be proactive with multiple websites that offer financial assistance (i.e., cuckfancer.org, hope4yawc.org, thesamfund.org). Be social. If you want to go out with your friends, drive yourself. And when you want leave because you aren’t having fun, no one will ever question why you are leaving. It’s okay to be a little selfish. The goal is to take care of yourself. Sometimes that means saying yes, and sometimes that means saying no.

Hugh Jackman Treated For Skin Cancer For Third Time, Urges Everyone To Wear Sunscreen

For the third time in under a year, Hugh Jackman has reportedly been diagnosed and treated for skin cancer.

The actor’s rep told E! News that Jackman was recently treated for basal cell carcinoma. The rep added that the “X-Men” star is “all good” now.

The 46-year-old Australian was previously treated for basal cell carcinoma in November 2013, and again in May this year. On both of those occasions, the cancer was removed from his nose.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of cancer in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health. It is usually entirely treatable; however, the Skin Cancer Foundation warns that the disease can cause disfigurement if not promptly treated.

Since his diagnosis, Jackman has spoken out on the importance of using sun protection as well as getting regular checkups.

On Monday, he posted an image on his Instagram account featuring the words “Everybody’s free (to wear sunscreen),” an apparent reference to the spoken word song by Australian director Baz Luhrmann. In May, Jackman posted a photograph of his bandaged nose post-treatment with the plea: “PLEASE! PLEASE! WEAR SUNSCREEN!”

Following his treatment last Spring, Jackman told The Associated Press that he believed his battle with skin cancer had not come quite come to an end.

“I’m realistic about the future and it’s more than likely that I’ll have at least one more but probably many more, which is not uncommon for an Aussie particularly from English stock growing up in Australia where I don’t remember ever being told to put sunscreen on,” Jackman told the news outlet. ”But the beauty of this is it’s all preventable, it’s just about getting proper check-ups. I can be typical man, a little lazy, I couldn’t be bothered and now I’m not lazy at all.”

Elizabeth Gilbert Explains What Everyone Gets Wrong About ‘Soul Mates’ (VIDEO)

How many times have you heard people say they’re looking for their “soul mate?” When she embarked on her now-famous Eat, Pray, Love journey, author Elizabeth Gilbert did end up falling deeply in love with her now-husband — but he isn’t the “soul mate” that so many people search for. And that’s exactly why Gilbert says their relationship has a lasting future.

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants,” Gilbert wrote in Eat, Pray, Love. “But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you will ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake.”

Before she journeyed to Italy, India and Bali for her book, Gilbert couldn’t make sense of the fact that she had found and subsequently lost a man she had believed to be her soul mate. Then, a friend of Gilbert’s carefully explained what a soul mate is — and why you don’t always want to marry him.

“He told me about somebody who I had lost — who I thought was my soul mate — he said, ‘He probably was. But you don’t understand what a soul mate is,'” Gilbert recalls her friend saying. “‘You think it’s all roses and happiness. A soul mate is somebody who changes you. And then, sometimes, they have to leave because the intensity of the relationship is so much that you can’t actually have [stability].'”

Rather than look to a “soul mate” for lasting love or marriage, Gilbert now believes in looking for something different.

“Your partner is something else,” Gilbert says. “That’s your friend. My husband is my best friend. He’s not the mirror that holds up my flaws. He’s just the guy who’s like, ‘I think you’re terrific’… It’s just simple, showing up for each other.”

Gilbert still admits that the fire and intensity of a soul mate isn’t without its merits. “Whatever they fired up in you, you might have needed fired up,” she says. “And then you might need them to go, so that you can go on your journey.”

The second part of Elizabeth Gilbert’s conversation with Oprah airs on “Super Soul Sunday” this Sunday, Oct. 12, on OWN at 11 a.m. ET, during which it also streams live on Oprah.com, Facebook.com/owntv and Facebook.com/supersoulsunday.

A Taekwondo Match Unexpectedly Turns Into a Dance Battle; Everyone Wins The Round

A Taekwondo match can sometimes look like a beautiful, choreographed fight, almost like a dance. But sometimes, it can be an actual choreographed dance.

Watch the fighters above get down to the “We No Speak Americano” song as they put the combat aside, and battle with their dance moves instead.

Kevin Bacon would be proud.

Though the video made rounds on the Internet in 2013, we are thankful America’s Funniest Home Videos reposted the clip this week to remind us that combining dancing and fighting never gets old.

If Everyone Was This Honest During Sex, No One Would Be Having Sex

Here’s a terrifying thought: What if no one was concerned with being polite during sex and instead said exactly what they were thinking?

In the video above, BuzzFeed gives us a glimpse of just how awkward sex would be if that were to happen. Some of the cringiest admissions? “This isn’t my O face. This is my holding-in-a-fart face” — and the one thing no man wants to hear right before sexy time begins: “Oh, cool penis!”

Shudders.

How To Throw A Wedding That Everyone Will Be Talking About

2014-07-02-brides_logocopy.jpg

By Elizabeth Mitchell for Brides

Obviously lush flowers and a gorgeous venue are some of the elements of a beautiful wedding, but picture-perfect décor doesn’t ensure an epic party. Score a 10 out of 10 for overall experience by following these simple yet effective tips that will have your guests talking about your wedding for years to come.

1. Ask for song requests.

To ensure everyone is having a great time and dancing the night away, have your guests request a song via the invitation response, recommends Key Largo wedding planner Lynn D’Ascanio of Dasignerevents.com. “Give this list of songs to your DJ, along with the name of the person who requested each song. That way, if the dance floor starts to thin out, the DJ can play songs off of the request list.” This pretty much guarantees that the person who requested the song will get up and dance and encourage others to do so as well.

2. Don’t let your friends and family talk forever.

“Many fun events have been driven into the ground by deathly long speeches,” points out Lynn Jawitz, owner of Florisan Wedding and Event Design in NYC. To keep the party popping, ask your speech givers to keep their toasts short and sweet.

3. Remember to thank your guests.

Speaking of speeches, it’s important to let your guests knows how much you personally appreciate them coming. “It’s hard to believe how often this simple step is overlooked,” notes Jawitz. “Bite the bullet, make a speech (keep it short, of course) and just genuinely thank your guests for dropping their lives that day to share it with you.”

4. And keep them in the know.

According to D’Ascanio, the best weddings are the ones that are organized and follow a timeline. “When the events of the day unfold in a timely manner, and the bridal party and guests alike are not left standing around wondering what’s next or where they should go or what they should be doing, the entire day seems flawless.”

5. Add in an element of surprise.

Who doesn’t love a special surprise at a wedding? “You could hire a group of singers or dancers disguised as wait staff to break out into song or dance during dinner,” suggests D’Ascanio. Or you and the groom could perform a practiced dance routine yourselves for the first dance, offers Greg Jenkins, founder of Bravo Productions. “A ‘wow’ factor can be memorable and will ensure your guests have a blast.”

6. Opt for a short ceremony.

If possible, try to keep your ceremony simple and short in length. “A long, drawn-out ceremony takes away that guest energy level at the onset, and sometimes it cannot be recovered for the reception,” warns Jenkins.

7. Give birthday shout outs.

Does your BFF have a birthday on the same day as your big day? Or is it his parents’ anniversary too? “Have your MC acknowledge any birthdays and/or anniversaries with a dedicated song during the reception,” advises Daniela Grafman, wedding & special events coordinator at Vision Entertainment Group LLC. People love attention. Plus, it’s just a sweet gesture.

8. Hire a great band or DJ.

After all, they can, in fact, make or break a party. Florida wedding planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss The Planner, recommends looking for a high energy performer, while being careful not to choose an annoying personality to be your MC. “Great vocals, great dance moves and great spunk will have everyone up on their feet until it’s time to go home. Seamless song transitions and the ability to read the crowd when they want to hear more of the same sound or a desire to switch to a different sound is where a DJ’s talent also comes into play.”

9. Provide transportation.

If you’re hosting a destination wedding or your wedding is in a remote location, be sure to provide transportation for guests from their hotel to your wedding and back, says Lauren Randolph, founder of My Hotel Wedding. “This way people don’t have to worry about driving home drunk, which guarantees that they can party harder.”

10. Allow your guests plenty of free time.

This is particularly important if you have a destination wedding or a bunch of guests in from out of town, says professional wedding planner Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques. “Back to back activities after a long trip will run them into the ground. Let them have some time and space to explore and they’ll be refreshed and excited at all of your events.” We concur.

Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight Show’ Welcomed By Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey & Basically Everyone Else

For Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” inauguration, over a dozen A-list celebrities showed up to pay homage to the newly minted host. And pay homage they did, with each giving him $ 100 — the sum that Fallon’s friends wagered that he would never host “The Tonight Show.”

Apparently, he had quite a number of “friends” who made that bet.

Robert De Niro threw down a bill, followed by a parade of celebrities, including of Fallon’s former Weekend Update co-anchor Tina Fey, Joe Namath, Rudy Giuliani, Mariah Carey, Tracy Morgan, Joan Rivers, Kim Kardashian, Seth Rogen, Lindsay Lohan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mike Tyson, Lady Gaga and finally Fallon’s former Best Friend Forever For Six Months — and now timeslot rival — Stephen Colbert.

“Welcome to 11:30, bitch!” Colbert exclaimed after dumping a pile of coins on Fallon’s desk. Watch the video above.
