Nana Judy Emerges on Fairfax Avenue as L.A. Comes Into Focus for Brand

LOS ANGELES — Nana Judy is the latest brand to set up shop on Fairfax Avenue, marking the brand’s entry into retail.
The company’s 2,650-square-foot store is next to Tyler the Creator’s Golf Wang shop. The space, which the company will officially ring in on its Oct. 25 grand opening, will also serve a dual purpose as the company’s U.S. headquarters and showroom.
“The brand’s been around for 11 years in Australia and we have a flagship in Melbourne, which does extremely well,” Nana Judy founder Glenn Coleman said of the thinking behind opening a Stateside store now. “We’ve been in the U.S. market for two years and the demand has been a natural progression and it happened organically through our consumers.”
The company’s had its eye on Fairfax Avenue for a few years now, Coleman said, jumping at the chance to sign a lease when space became available.
Coleman pointed to the street’s culture and the existing brands on Fairfax that made it a primary focus for Nana Judy’s first store.
The Fairfax flagship will carry in-store exclusives, including the Oct. 26 launch of a men’s and women’s collaboration with Disney’s “101 Dalmatians.” Disney has been on a tear of late with collaborations marking

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING: As any politician can attest, setting the stage is essential to an public appearance. While First Lady Melania Trump is once removed in terms of being an elected official, she made today’s visit to Cairo – the finale of a four African nation tour, a cinematic one with a visit to the Pyramids in Ginzi.
Her arrival in Egypt began with some of the ingredients of the standard airport meet-and-greet: Schoolchildren, her fellow First Lady Entissar al-Sisi and a red carpet. But what was the third of four diplomatic entrances this week bordered on silent, according to a press pool. No music played and “very tough security” kept a close eye. In addition, police manned rooftops as the motorcade made its way through the city streets. Although work weeks can reel into Cairo as many as 25 million people, traffic was not an issue, partially due to Saturday being a holiday, the pool said. Media types were advised to leave their electronic devices behind, when the caravan stopped at the presidential palace. There, Trump and Egypt President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi met behind closed doors for under an hour.

Nearly a year after numerous models alleged on-the-job mistreatment and sexual abuse, leading forces in the the fashion industry have adopted policies to try to ensure their well-being.

Visitors to the Upper West Side museum will also find his first camera, an Olympus Pen-D 35mm, and his signature sparrow blue jacket. Other mementos include photographs of Cunningham with friends and correspondence, including handmade Valentines he liked to send to friends.

CEO Talks: Tailored Brands’ Doug Ewert and His Unwavering Focus

It was a David-and-Goliath-type of situation when the Men’s Wearhouse was negotiating to buy its archrival Jos. A. Bank a little more than four years ago. There was a back-and-forth bidding war between the competitors and ultimately, the larger Men’s Wearhouse walked away victorious.
But be careful what you wish for.
While the merger created the largest men’s specialty store chain in the U.S., the $ 1.8 billion acquisition added a hefty amount of debt to Men’s Wearhouse’s balance sheet and the Bank business was in worse shape than its acquirer realized. The promotional strategy it used to drive sales — buy-one-get-one, two, three or even seven, free — was unsustainable.
For two years, chief executive officer Doug Ewert took heat from Wall Street as he worked tirelessly to turn the Bank business around. Today, the newly named Tailored Brands Inc. has turned the corner, quadrupling profits in 2017 and posting comparable-store sales gains at its flagship Men’s Wearhouse and the Jos. A. Bank division.
Here, Ewert discusses the challenging journey to prosperity, the outlook for both businesses as well as its Joseph Abboud brand, its Moores division in Canada, the K&G superstore concept, and the outsized growth the company is experiencing in custom clothing.

HOLIDAY READY: Net-a-porter is putting more focus on holiday wear as it looks to answer to the needs of an increasingly global and mobile consumer who is big on experiences, travel and her social media image.
The e-tailer has launched a new category, Jet-a-porter, offering a curated selection of resort, swimwear and ski clothing. According to the company, skiwear has increased by more than half since last year. Given its significant growth trajectory, it made up almost three-quarters of Net’s Cruise 2017 buy.
“We’ve seen major growth year-on-year since launching the sports category, Net-a-sporter, in 2014 and we don’t see this slowing down any time soon,” said Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net’s global buying director.
She said that among the best-selling brands were Fendi, Perfect Moment, best known for their onesies, Moncler Grenoble and the knitwear label Chinti and Parker, which recently created an exclusive capsule for the retailer.

Adidas Opens Largest Originals Store Globally in Chicago With Focus on Local Community

Thursday’s opening of the Adidas Originals flagship in Chicago will be the largest in the world, and the seventh one in the U.S.
With nearly 5,000 square feet of shoppable space, the 10,000-square-foot store at 1532 North Milwaukee Avenue is taking a hyper-local approach. In the never-ending chase to bridge the online community with the in-store experience, the company is playing up the city’s heritage through design accents. A fitting room reflects the materials and route of the L train, with walls wrapped with ribbed brush steel reminiscent of the elevated line’s cars. There is also a bench that is modeled after the ones found in all CTA stations.
The city’s transit system was also the inspiration for custom signs displayed throughout the store, which are similar to the ones displayed on the L train line and in its stations. The Adidas versions direct shoppers to silhouettes from the brand’s past, highlighting the year each model made its debut and other information. Wednesday night’s opening party, featured performances from BJ The Chicago Kid, Knox Fortune and DJ ELZ. The site is near two other streetwear and sneaker stores, RSVP Gallery and Saint Alfred.

Intimate Apparel Brands Focus on Innerwear as Outerwear

NEW YORK — As innerwear begins to function as apparel — click through any music festival gallery for proof — brands showing at the Curve New York trade show, which took place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center this week in New York, continue to think about functionality, duality and Instagram appeal when developing their collections.
“We are seeing a shift with lingerie. It’s becoming the main focal point,” said Jessica Pfister, vice president of Le Mystère. “Girls are wearing bodysuits with pants; bra tops with jackets. The expectation is comfort and quality.”
Le Mystère previewed its Infinite sheer T-shirt bra with an elastic-free, engineered edge that can be worn seven ways. It retails for around $ 65. They also showed a bodysuit anointed “smoothwear,” which retails for $ 89, and a sheer illusion demi scoop bra, which retails for around $ 60. According to Pfister, navy and peach are trending and retailers are looking for larger cup sizes.
“When I started out, everyone was a 34B. Now at minimum everyone is a D. Women are becoming more educated about the fit of bras,” said Pfister.

Guo Pei to Be Focus of SCAD Exhibition and Upcoming Rizzoli Book

EXHIBIT SET: The Savannah College of Art & Design has confirmed the dates for what will be Guo Pei’s first solo museum exhibition.
The show will bow Sept. 7 at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta, and will feature 30 of the designer’s intricate gowns, footwear and accessories, including the imperial yellow gown worn by Rihanna at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in 2015. Although the musician and designer have not collaborated since that most-photographed choice, the blizzard of publicity their pairing established two years ago introduced Pei’s work to millions.
SCAD is counting on a New York-based creative collective HOWL that includes three photographers who are alumni — Jim Lind, Patrick O’Brien and Elliot Ross — to capture Pei’s designs in a monograph. The fourth member Forest Woodward is the only non-SCAD graduate. While individually the lensmen have worked with Patagonia, Carhartt and National Geographic, among other well-known brands, this is the four-year-old group’s first major fashion undertaking. Corneliani to Focus on Americas, Strengthens Management Team

MILAN — Corneliani is focusing on the Americas, building its executive management team to further develop business in the region.
The Italian men’s wear company has tapped Maurizio Mantovani as its Americas chief executive officer, and he is charged with boosting the brand’s wholesale network and its retail business. He reports to Corneliani ceo Paolo Roviera. Most recently, Mantovani was senior vice president of operations and outlets at Ermenegildo Zegna in New York, leveraging 20 years of experience at the men’s wear group holding different roles in the North American division. Roviera, who joined Corneliani from Pal Zileri in September, is also a Zegna alum.
Corneliani has also appointed Sean Hieter senior vice president of sales. Hieter was previously vice president of Robert Graham Designs. His strong  relations with retailers will be key in growing the brand’s business through department stores and high-end specialty stores, the company said.
“North America accounts for less than 10 percent of sales and it is only a wholesale business,” Roviera said. “This can’t be. We aim for the region to represent more than 20 percent of total.”

Eleventy to Focus on International Expansion

Italian label Eleventy is planning big moves. Creative directors Marco Baldassari and Paolo Zuntini, both chief executive officers of the company along with Andrea Scuderi, held a press conference in Milan late last month to share the positive results registered and the upcoming strategies for the brand.
The nine-year-old company is expected to close the year with a revenue of 20 million euros, or $ 21.8 million at current exchange, registering a 35 percent increase compared with 2015, when it totaled 14.9 million euros, or $ 16.2 million. The positive outcome is also due to the support of Vei Capital, Palladio Holding’s private equity fund, which became the major shareholder of the company in 2014 and currently owns 50 percent of the shares.
“It’s also thanks to them that today we are able to be in conversation with the world,” Baldassari said. “In order to make this kind of progress, it’s essential to find partners that can support you with capital and, most of all, human resources,” he said, underscoring how these “enable us to dialogue with foreign countries, ranging from the U.S. to China and Japan, where there’s a different background.”

Tyra Banks Quits ‘FABLife’ Show After Two Months To Focus On New Company

Tyra Banks was too fierce for the “FABLife,” as TMZ is reporting that Banks has left the talk show after only two months.

Banks is an executive producer for the show, which also features model Chrissy Teigen, editor in chief of Yahoo Style Joe Zee, home expert Lauren Makk and YouTube star Leah Ashley. 

“This is a very difficult decision, but necessary,” said a rep for Banks in statement to The Huffington Post.

Tyra, via her rep, sent the following statement: “I will be devoting more time to my new, growing cosmetics company, Tyra Beauty, which is expanding faster than anticipated, as well as overseeing my company’s other entertainment ventures. I will however continue to support the growth and success of ‘FABLife’ and greatly admire my fellow co-hosts and the talented production team behind the show.”

Banks is already looking for people to come work for her beauty startup, according to her Twitter. 

The announcement comes less than a month after the CW canceled Banks’ long-running “America’s Next Top Model” after 22 seasons.

Luckily, her rep confirmed that Banks is still working on “Life-Size 2” with the Disney Channel.

Menlook.com Sets Focus on Mobile Commerce

PARIS — French men’s e-tailer Menlook.com feted its fifth-year anniversary on a slick new party boat docked on the shores of the Seine River in Paris on Wednesday night.
“I admit, we have never done anything on this scale before,” beamed Marc Menasé, the Web site’s founder. “But then, we are an international company -75 percent of our business happens outside of France,” he added, noting the site logs 3.7 million visits a month.
The e-tailer operates offices in Paris, London, Hamburg, Singapore and also Barcelona, which opened this summer with a special platform for personal shopping.
“E-commerce is a solo experience – you sit alone in front of a computer. But men need advice. Our works via email, telephone, and Skype,” said Menasé.
Menlook started in 2010 with 50 brands, and today boasts more than 800. Customers spend on average 170 euros, or $ 190 at current exchange, per visit, with the number of recurring visitors “increasing significantly” each year, according to Menasé.
“With the style advice and the CRM that we have done, we are getting close to 2.5 orders per client per year,” he said.
The executive expects sales to climb 60 million euros, or $ 67 million, by year-end, aiming to attain 100 million euros, or $ 112 million,

Big Slick: Celebs gather in Kansas City to focus on family, charity this Father’s Day weekend

Back in 2010 I called two friends from my hometown of Overland Park, Kansas with an idea for a charity poker tournament. The friends were Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, and the goal was to have fun with our family and friends while raising $ 50K or so for Children’s Mercy Hospital. It took nine weeks to plan. I named the event Big Slick, and celebrated as year one exceeded expectations both in regard to total money raised and the generosity of all those involved – including friends like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, George Wendt and Will Forte who flew in for the cause.

This weekend marks the 6th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser. It’s also Father’s Day. And while the holiday overlap wasn’t intentional, it beautifully highlights everything Big Slick has grown to be about over the past five years. The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family – and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet – who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $ 2.2MM it’s raised (a record $ 1MM in 2014) possible.

Throughout the months leading up to Big Slick, it really is a familial effort that makes it all happen. My sister Julie and brother-in-law Mark are on the organization board along with Paul’s mother and sister, Jason’s mom, David’s sister, Eric’s sister… not to mention volunteer committees full of countless childhood and college friends. It’s an annual family reunion of sorts that keeps us connected to our roots, introduces new friends to a city that we love, rallies the entire region around charity and continually humbles and inspires us – all while having fun.

The fun of Big Slick weekend includes a variety of fundraising events ranging from celebrity vs. celebrity softball on the field at Royals’ Kaufman Stadium to song and dance numbers and high-ticket auction items. However, the best part of the weekend is always away from the crowds. It’s the hours spent in the halls at Children’s Mercy. Those moments in the hospital are also what brings us, all the volunteers and our celebrity friends – most of whom have no personal connection to Kansas City or the Midwest – back to support Big Slick year after year. Once you meet the children and their parents, hear their stories, meet the nurses and staff… there’s no denying that it’s worth taking the weekend to help these individuals – even if it means being away from your own kids on Father’s Day in order to support these fathers.

There’s an incredible documentary called Inside Pediatrics that was filmed at Children’s Mercy last year, narrated by Paul Rudd and including a glimpse of Big Slick weekend. Whether you’re familiar with the Kansas City area or not, it’s a moving look at the current work being done in child medicine and the challenges faced by our neighbors impacted by illness. It’s what inspires me. This Father’s Day or any day – whether in your hometown or current town – I encourage you to find what inspires you to act. 3 Uncommon Ways to Maintain Your Real Focus

2015-06-05-1433514790-4550924-AlmaArtePhotography.jpgPerfectly healthy young people have been taking themselves to doctors, worried that their forgetfulness is a sign of Alzheimer’s, according to a report last month about doctors in Australia who are studying the phenomenon. But for most of us, growing forgetfulness is little more than a natural reaction to information overload.

Our brains are simply not wired to process the vast amount of information and choices we are exposed to these days–and the impossible effort to do so can lead to indecisiveness, bad decisions and stress, according to Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D., a psychologist and author of Find Your Focus Zone.

Information overload can also tempt us to tune out or simply slide across the surface of life — like a water strider on a pond, robbed of the pleasure of a place to land. So what genuinely helps people navigate this Information Age (which, perhaps not coincidentally, has also been called the Age of Anxiety?)

There are lots of suggestions out there in publications such as, Fast Company, Forbes and Aeon. Many discuss the dangers of email and multitasking and the value of daydreaming, taking breaks, going for walks, writing things down, and doing the most important things first. Daniel Goleman also recently wrote about the topic in Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, in which he explores the benefits of mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental “prosthetics.”

As someone who has an insatiable desire to know and do everything, I’ve also come to find three insights particularly helpful. Rather than concrete actions, they serve more as mindsets or perspectives to take on all that is available to us now — and stay centered on what truly matters to us as individuals.

What’s new is not (necessarily) important. In a recent interview on Krista Tippett’s podcast, On Being, Maria Popova, the creator of Brain Pickings, observed that the way information comes to us today via the Internet constantly reinforces the idea that what is new is what is important and valuable. But this, of course, is not true. Much of what is delivered up as new is neither important nor valuable. To the contrary, it can be a great distraction from what is meaningful — which is often old, timeless, contained in books, in music, in art, and in the hearts and souls of human beings who need only the expanse of quiet, leisure, stillness, and each other to bring their wisdom to life. Put another way: It helps to remember that trying to keep up with what is new is not necessarily what’s most likely to make you happy, healthy, or successful.

Sensitivity to other people’s expectations can spin you in circles. Being overly influenced by other people’s expectations can make us vulnerable to being reactive instead of deliberate; and those of us who are sensitive to other people’s expectations need to figure out how to manage that. When I was growing up, for example, my father on more than one occasion became furious at me for reading a book rather than volunteering to help around the house. While he clearly did not remember what it was like to be a kid or enjoy himself, his reaction had an impact on me. And to this day, I need to remind myself to be conscious of my motivations before I act so I do not unconsciously relinquish the reins of my life to the helter-skelter whims of others.

Focusing on what makes you feel like you is the best guide there is. Like most writers, I have spent a lot of time living a dual existence: “professional” by day, and “writer” by any early or late hour I have to myself. I am fortunate that I am adept at my professional work, I enjoy it, and I find it meaningful. But when I think it is me, instead of what I do, I tend to lose my focus–and, often, lots of things start to go wrong. But when I am know that I am a writer first–because that is where I feel most fully me–I make smarter decisions, my energy flows more smoothly, and things tend to go better in my working life, my writing life, and my personal life. I can look at the information that comes my way and not feel overly reactive and spun about by distractions because I am acting from what I can only describe as the core of my being.

In short, it comes down to those familiar words: Know yourself — and then trust yourself. It is as simple and remarkable as that.

Waste in Focus: What America Throws Away (PHOTOS)

Photographer Peter Menzel captured America’s attention with his last photo project, What the World Eats, and his book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets. In that project, Menzel’s images powerfully portrayed differences in income, nutrition, and lifestyle.

His latest project, centering on what Americans across the country throw away and recycle, is no less powerful. The images that make up Waste in Focus feature eight American families surrounded by their weekly waste broken down into what is recycled and what goes to the landfill. The images make it impossible to deny how much waste some households generate, or that it is possible to reduce the amount of waste in our homes by making a few simple changes.

She was initially supposed to appear on the show with boyfriend Brian Dawe, but he backed out at the last moment. Dawe later revealed to Starcasm that his relationship with Abraham had been a sham, concocted to get her on “Couples Therapy,” and that he could not, in good conscience, go through with the plan.
