The Salting Lands the September Cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, But Founders Plan Growth Carefully

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: While many brands fortunate enough to land the cover of O, the Oprah Magazin” tend to ramp up production, The Salting has taken a much more measured approach.
Eighteen months after the sharply edited unisex label was launched by Michael Smaldone and Michael Ward, Winfrey donned a gold-colored fedora and caftan on the September cover of her magazine. After O’s creative director Adam Glassman e-mailed to share the news, Smaldone said, “I think I almost fell off my chair. It was pretty great.”
Glassman, whom Smaldone has known for years, liked the looks of The Salting and sent a few of his colleagues in to photograph the collection, and later pulled some items and requested a few hats to be made in Winfrey’s size for her personally. Additional clothes were later sent. About a month ago, Smaldone and Ward were tipped off that a cover shot was a possibility with the caveat that nothing is ever certain.

Marks & Spencer, Founders Factory Form JV to Support Retail Start-ups

START ME UP: Marks & Spencer is embracing the future with a joint venture aimed at finding and developing retail start-ups. M&S has teamed with Britain’s Founders Factory, a well-funded incubator for start-up businesses, on the project.
M&S said Monday the partnership will give it “direct access to cutting-edge technologies” through investment in talented entrepreneurs and businesses. M&S will become the majority shareholder in the JV, which wants to build a portfolio of investments that it will seek to grow and scale.
The retailer will become Founders Factory’s exclusive U.K. retail partner, and invest in a number of start-ups that will be sourced through Founders Factory’s global network.
M&S said it’s looking to discover new technologies, business models and entrepreneurial thinking as it seeks to put digital at the heart of its transformation strategy.
Steve Rowe, chief executive officer of M&S, said he’s hoping the start-ups and entrepreneurs “will provide disruptive thinking and questioning to the way we work at a time of critical transformation within the business. By investing in new innovative technologies and products we hope to change the way we work and operate.”

WWD: In your opinion, what in the market is necessitating the focus on the plus-size market?
Chastity Garner: Retail is struggling. Brick-and-mortar locations of major retailers are closing. The offerings for straight-sized women are oversaturated. Plus-size women are the majority of the women in the U.S., but have the least clothing options. If you want to stay alive in the retail market, you have to sell more to current customers or find new ones. The plus-size woman is that new customer. 
CeCe Olisa: Social media has been key to expanding the plus-size market. Until recently, any conversations about plus[-size] bodies or fashion was dictated by the media — it was shameful and lackluster. Now consumers are taking the reins. A plus woman who expresses herself through fashion can be interesting, aspirational and accessible, which can translate easily into sales.

Chanel Buys Founder’s Villa La Pausa

HOUSE PROUD: Chanel said Wednesday that it has purchased Gabrielle Chanel’s villa La Pausa in the south of France. It is the only one of her homes that she entirely imagined, constructed and decorated.
During the Twenties, the designer had visited the area with the Duke of Westminster. She decided to build a home overlooking the Mediterranean and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.
Chanel bought the land on Sept. 30, 1928, and the construction of the villa ended in January 1930.
The house’s architecture has numerous references to that of Aubazine, the orphanage (and former abbey) where Chanel spent her adolesence. The furnishings were “new, simple and modern,” and caused an immediate sensation, according to the house of Chanel.
Its founder informally hosted the likes of Misia Sert, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí and Paul Iribe at La Pausa.
Following the death of the Duke of Westminster in 1954, Chanel sold La Pausa and its contents to the American author and editor Emery Reves, who welcomed friends such as Winston Churchill, Greta Garbo and Jacqueline Onassis there.
“It is therefore an essential witness to the life of Gabrielle Chanel, which today joins the patrimony of Chanel,” the house stated.
La Pausa is to be renovated in the spirit of its origins.
