Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Has More Freedom Than Ever

A few minutes into my demo of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, I realized I was experiencing something I’d never felt before in an Uncharted game: total freedom. Even in dozens of hours exploring with Nathan Drake, Uncharted has never given me the sense that I can do whatever I want in any order, but in The Lost Legacy, that changes.

The section of the game I played – chapter four in The Lost Legacy’s overall story – dropped me into an expansive area of Southern India’s Western Ghats. As new protagonist Chloe Frazer, the world was my oyster, with the franchise’s first completely non-linear experience and the largest single area ever in an Uncharted game.

While my ultimate goal to advance the story was clear (finding a few statues that match corresponding symbols on an artifact), the game never forced my hand. From exploring ruins to searching for treasure to just shooting down groups of enemies, there was never any pressure to do anything but wander. While Nadine Ross – Chloe’s reluctant partner on the journey – would occasionally give me a hint that could lead to an objective, I was able to discover everything from actual story moments to hidden treasures at my own pace.

Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad

Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad

The dramatic story of fugitive slaves and the antislavery activists who defied the law to help them reach freedom. More than any other scholar, Eric Foner has influenced our understanding of America’s history. Now, making brilliant use of extraordinary evidence, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian once again reconfigures the national saga of American slavery and freedom. A deeply entrenched institution, slavery lived on legally and commercially even in the northern states that had abolished it after the American Revolution. Slaves could be found in the streets of New York well after abolition, traveling with owners doing business with the city’s major banks, merchants, and manufacturers. New York was also home to the North’s largest free black community, making it a magnet for fugitive slaves seeking refuge. Slave catchers and gangs of kidnappers roamed the city, seizing free blacks, often children, and sending them south to slavery. To protect fugitives and fight kidnappings, the city’s free blacks worked with white abolitionists to organize the New York Vigilance Committee in 1835. In the 1840s vigilance committees proliferated throughout the North and began collaborating to dispatch fugitive slaves from the upper South, Washington, and Baltimore, through Philadelphia and New York, to Albany, Syracuse, and Canada. These networks of antislavery resistance, centered on New York City, became known as the underground railroad. Forced to operate in secrecy by hostile laws, courts, and politicians, the city’s underground-railroad agents helped more than 3,000 fugitive slaves reach freedom between 1830 and 1860. Until now, their stories have remained largely unknown, their significance little understood. Building on fresh evidence-including a detailed record of slave escapes secretly kept by Sydney Howard Gay, one of the key organizers in New York-Foner elevates the underground railroad from folklore to sweeping history. The story is inspiring-full of memorable characte

Ranger Up Freedom Isn’t Free Men’s Normal Fit T-Shirt

Ranger Up Freedom Isn’t Free Men’s Normal Fit T-Shirt

This shirt proudly shows VETERAN over the front left breast of the shirt (we said breast…heh, heh…) with the back stating “Freedom isn’t Free. I paid for it.”This shirt meets two awesome intents. One – We at Ranger Up firmly believe that every sailor, airman, coast guardsman, marine and soldier owns a piece of this country, paid for in his or her blood, sweat, tears, and time away from family and friends. We think this shirt celebrates that. Two – this shirt will aggravate the crap out of the people we hate. “Who do they think they are? Like he really paid for anything. All he did was propogate unbridled American aggression for oil…blah blah blah” We love it when these people are unhappy and this shirt will drive em nuts! Need to buy in bulk or on government contract? Just email us and we will be glad to send you a quote.

Free Trade and Freedom

Free Trade and Freedom

This ethnography examines farmers’ lives on the island of St. Lucia amidst the threat of market loss for their primary export product, bananas. Karla Slocum’s study demonstrates how, when prices for bananas declined and trade policies changes, St. Lucia’s banana producers formed a social movement. They deployed their labor and land use practices and discourses in ways that affirmed the meaning of their local communities and their nation rather than taking on global market pressure directly. Slocum reveals how local and national areas remain important to people’s lives even when they must live in a globalizing world. Specifically, Slocum’s work disagrees with popular claims that globalization overtakes local communities. This book will be of particular interest to those in the fields of social movements and activism, labor, Afro-Caribbean populations and those concerned with African Diaspora studies.

Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli Talks Creative Freedom and Next Steps for the House

Frank Sinatra put it like this: “I did it my way.”
Pierpaolo Piccioli’s way of life is unconventional, especially for a couturier. And that’s just how he likes it. Valentino’s creative director continues to live in Nettuno, Italy, a beach town 44 miles south of Rome where he was born, where he met his wife, Simona, and where they are raising their three children. Piccioli’s choice seems to mirror his understated and affable manners.
When he’s not traveling around the world, Piccioli rides the train to Rome and back each day like thousands of other commuters, and splits his time between the Italian capital, in the storied Piazza Mignanelli headquarters, Paris and Milan. At the moment of this particular interview, Piccioli has carved out a weekend between a trip from New York to Nettuno, back to New York and then off to Moscow, just to spend the All Saints’ Day holiday with his family at home.
While marked by a medieval hamlet and 14th-century towers, there is an additional claim to fame for Nettuno, or Neptune, the god of the sea in Roman mythology: in World War II, the Allies, led by the U.S. Army, landed on its sandy beaches and those of

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

This book is the first of its kind to bring together a collection of critical scholarly work on consumer culture in South Africa, exploring the cultural, political, economic, and social aspects of consumption in post-Apartheid society. From sushi and Japanese diplomacy to Queen Sophie''s writhing gown, from middle class Sowetan golfers to an indebted working class citizenry, from wedding websites to wedding nostalgia, from the liberation of consuming to the low wage labour of selling, the chapters in this book demonstrate a variety of themes, showing that to start with consumption, rather than ending with it, allows for new insights into long-standing areas of social research. By mapping, exploring and theorizing the diverse aspects of consumption and consumer culture, the volume collectively works towards a fresh set of empirically rooted conceptual commentaries on the politics, economics, and social dynamics of modern South Africa. This effort, in turn, can serve as a foundation for thinking less parochially about neoliberal power and consumer culture. On a global scale, studying consumption in South Africa matters because in some ways the country serves as a microcosm for global patterns of income inequality, race-based economic oppression, and hopes for the material betterment of life. By exploring what consumption means on the ''local'' scale in South Africa, the possibility arises to trace new global links and dissonances. This book was originally published as a special issue ofCritical Arts.

How To Succeed In Starting Your Own Business: A No-fail Plan For Achieving Financial Freedom How To Finish Rich

I, Spiros, G. Raftis, at age 26, started a manufacturing business because I was fired. I had no business plan, no real product, and more importantly, very little money -I was devastated. I had devoted maximum effort, abilities, and long hours as a salesman for the owners of the company; in fact, I bought shares. I was an owner and was fired. My decision to start my own business was to: PREVENT GETTING RIPPED OFF AGAIN. I was convinced I could do it. OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AFFORDS THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY OF BEING DIRECTLY REWARDED – THE MAXIMUM RETURN OF ONE''S ABILTIY. I wrote this book to share practical advice with anyone starting a business. This is a no-nonsense book with non-MA-theories. More practical advise than theory. Most of the messages, lessons, and Chapters within are my experiences. I did not anticipate most of these events. I know now going into business one will have to face most of what is written in these pages. For example, I thought after one year in business, getting a loan from a bank would be easy. Instead, I got a lesson from my banker. I still remember his words: Spiros, if something happens to you, how does the bank get back the money it loaned you for your valve business? The bank does not want to run a valve company. The pages repeat ideas that have been proven to be valuable for anyone seeking success in starting a business. It is a must-read, must-buy book.

The Naked Country: Sexual Freedom in Ancient Greece

The Naked Country: Sexual Freedom in Ancient Greece

Over a thousand prostitutes served in the Temple of Aphrodite in Corinth, and it was a mark of great piety if a woman went there and coupled with a stranger. Sex was at the heart of life in ancient Greece, and so was the beauty of the human body – which was why completely naked servants served at banquets, and athletes and wrestlers trained and competed in the nude – watched often by an enthusiastic audience of women none of whom were averse to a closer encounter. The Greeks loved to look at a beautiful naked body, and were not averse to a close encounter with one. In an exchange of letters, brother and sister Arsenius and Ligeia frankly describe their enthusiastic entry into adult life in Corinth (described by historians as sex-mad) and the more sophisticated capital, Athens. Their tastes developed quickly, and are surprisingly similar to those of today.

Slavery vs. Freedom?: A Cost Analysis

Is there an advantage to being a slave rather than a minimum wage worker, who lives on a subsistence salary? A slave is a piece of property that needs to be maintained, just like a car or tractor. Hence from a health point of view, the situation of the slave is better than that of many workers in America, who still struggle with health costs, despite the advances of Obamacare.

A slave, like a pet, also has to be fed and treated with plenty of TLC, otherwise it will become squirrelly and indolent. Repeated punishments and beatings have not been found to increase the effectiveness of slaves. Minimum wage workers, however, require little TLC. If a worker in a fast food joint doesn’t perform his job, there’s always a replacement waiting in the wings. Of course, freedom is the one thing that slaves don’t have. Everyone talks about freedom and dreams of it, but once it arrives its benefits fall far short of the promise that was once held out. Sure it’s nice to be free, but freedom like independence means that you end up having to fend for yourself. It’s nice to be free if you can hack it, but if you end up having a hard time in an increasingly competitive marketplace, then you may want think about relinquishing your freedom.

In general, when you create a spreadsheet and list all the pluses and minuses of freedom versus slavery, you’re going to find that it’s a very close call. Would you rather be enslaved by a relatively nice owner, say a Thomas Jefferson type, or work for McDonald’s for the rest of your life?

One Fart From Freedom on the Fourth of July

Fart. Poop. Underpants. I’m betting right now you’re chuckling. Or at least you have a smile on your face. Because according to any kid under five, those are some of the funniest words in the English language. And let’s face it, we all have a bit of “kid” left in us. Men probably more so than women.

Why, ask any mom with sons and invariably she’ll have a story about the night her boys told fart jokes at dinner, cracking themselves up so much that they started farting right then and there.

Women are a bit more subtle. We sometimes pretend that we don’t possess the bodily function of passing gas. But when someone accidentally cuts a tiny fart in public, we all giggle. Remember that scene with Miranda in the first Sex And The City movie?

I’ve never understood why these actions make people laugh. Perhaps because it’s an embarrassing situation and we tend to snicker when embarrassed. And never in a million years did I think that fecal matter would dominate my family’s conversation for days on end.

But it did.

It all started when my father became ill. Not to be too graphic, there was a miscommunication between the elimination systems in his body. We thought things were under control until suddenly, shit hit the fan — literally. The situation required a simple surgery. But operating on an 89-year-old man always involves some risk. Fortunately, it was a success.

And then there he was, several days later, lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by his entire family, waiting to be discharged. And waiting and waiting.

Because as everyone knows, you can’t leave the hospital until you perform two main functions: that of eating and that of pooping.

The eating part started with liquids, of which he consumed very little. After a few days, he graduated to that yummy hospital Jello. And then eventually on to the next stage — that of passing gas.

So, here there I was, telling my father that “gas is good.” Any kind. The “silent but deadly” type. The “loud as a rumbling train” variety. The “juicy fruity” sort. Just let it rip, I urged.

As did my sister, our kids, our husbands, my mother.

The days passed slowly with a little gas here and there. Which meant that surely, the poop was about to come.

By day ten, you could cut the tension that weaved itself into our family dynamics. We’re all very close and it was a beautiful hospital, as far as hospitals go. It offered fine cafeteria dining in an outdoor setting, Wifi, and an assortment of vending machines that only charged a little more than minimum wage for a few bottles of water. But too much togetherness can cause friction in the best of families.

What we needed was some good old farts to cut through the air. To release my father and to set our family back on the path to normalcy.

By day fifteen, we had met all the RNs, CNAs, orderlies, team doctors, administration personnel and cafeteria cashiers. The only place in the hospital that I didn’t visit was the gift shop. Although I was tempted to buy the “farting” pillow featured in the window.

And then it happened. On the Fourth of July, while fireworks lit up the sky, popping and crackling in the air, my dad’s internal organs opened up with explosives of their own. Our family cheers rivaled those of the partygoers on the street.

As promised, he was discharged from the hospital.

Life went back to normal, with one small difference. I now have a “fart” story of my own, should the need arise.

Freedom Is in the Air

Freedom is in the air.

Most of us are still reeling in disbelief, some in dismay and some in jubilation, from the Supreme Court’s rulings on marriage last week. Whatever our feelings, millions of people are suddenly free to take on the rights and responsibilities of that institution.

Also hard to believe is the news that the U.S. and Cuba have just agreed to open up mutual embassies, as their decades-long enmity begins to defrost. It won’t happen overnight, but the outcome of greater freedom for Cubans on the island is inevitable.

A symbol of oppression, subjugation and injustice for many, the Confederate flag is finally being taken down in one state after another. Yet sometimes it seems like the greater the light the longer the shadow, as this country works through — painfully — its heritage of racism. The recent rash of burning black churches in the south boggles the mind and weighs down the heart.

In our world, we still have a great deal of work to do regarding freedom. And that’s just for the more outward freedoms, such as the right to speech, to practice our beliefs, to vote, to be who we are, to pursue happiness.

If we are going to be free, really free, the question of freedom runs much deeper. Even among those of us fortunate enough to live in the developed world with a roof over our heads, access to education, plentiful food, electricity and water, choices and, to a considerable degree, freedom, a large majority is still caught up in a rat race trying to make ends meet at the end of the month – -barely surviving, certainly not thriving.

And how many of us are selling ourselves — our precious life-force and irreplaceable time — for the illusion of security that a measly bi-weekly paycheck provides? How many of us are still suppressing who we are for fear of losing our jobs, or simply for fear of abandonment? How many are selling out on our dreams, our true calling, out of fear of “how will I pay the bills?” How many of us have stuffed ourselves into little boxes and soul-devouring situations so as not to make waves or risk rejection? How many of us are stuck in self-made prisons, living under the tyranny of the ego mind, slaves to its fearful and reactive machinations?

To free ourselves we have to be willing to examine our belief systems and undo our conditioning, to dig deep underneath the lies and misunderstandings we have taken on. Only we can do it. No one can do this work for us. We have to be willing to question the beliefs, mores and dogmas handed down by family, society, religion, culture — a demanding process, certainly not one for the faint of heart. We are willing to be wrong. We commit to doing the work to understand what the ego is, see how it operates in ourselves, to pull back our projections.

In a real sense we are engaging in a “holy war” with our own selves. That is the real meaning of jihad: the inner struggle with the lower tendencies of the ego. Overriding our own reactivity, the need to be right and to win. Resisting the desire to strike back when someone does something hurtful, or to defend and erect defensive walls when we feel attacked. Overcoming our ego’s laziness and resistance, when it is time to go the gym or sit down and write. Letting go of the need to control people and circumstances.

The outcome of this holy war is self-knowledge, self-acceptance, self-mastery, inner peace. Eventually we free up energy from all the conflict and power sapping effects of the inner struggle. There are no more games to play and we discover freedom of expression: I am who I am wherever I am, no matter what. I am whole and complete within myself and I stand alone if need be. That’s freedom.

So, as we in the U.S. celebrate freedom this weekend, let’s be grateful for the freedoms that we have. Let’s also commit to go further, to go for freedom in the larger and deeper sense of the word!

A Voice That Could Stir an Army: Fannie Lou Hamer and the Rhetoric of the Black Freedom Movement

A Voice That Could Stir an Army: Fannie Lou Hamer and the Rhetoric of the Black Freedom Movement

A sharecropper, a warrior, and a truth-telling prophet, Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977) stands as a powerful symbol not only of the 1960s black freedom movement, but also of the enduring human struggle against oppression. A Voice That Could Stir an Army is a rhetorical biography that tells the story of Hamer’s life by focusing on how she employed symbols- images, words, and even material objects such as the ballot, food, and clothing-to construct persuasive public personae, to influence audiences, and to effect social change. Drawing upon dozens of newly recovered Hamer texts and recent interviews with Hamer’s friends, family, and fellow activists, Maegan Parker Brooks moves chronologically through Hamer’s life. Brooks recounts Hamer’s early influences, her intersection with the black freedom movement, and her rise to prominence at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Brooks also considers Hamer’s lesser-known contributions to the fight against poverty and to feminist politics before analyzing how Hamer is remembered posthumously. The book concludes by emphasizing what remains rhetorical about Hamer’s biography, using the 2012 statue and museum dedication in Hamer’s hometown of Ruleville, Mississippi, to examine the larger social, political, and historiographical implications of her legacy. The sustained consideration of Hamer’s wide-ranging use of symbols and the reconstruction of her legacy provided within the pages of A Voice That Could Stir an Army enrich understanding of this key historical figure. This book also demonstrates how rhetorical analysis complements historical reconstruction to explain the dynamics of how social movements actually operate.

Top 10 Moments From a Blockbuster Year for the Freedom to Marry

2014 was another blockbuster year for the freedom to marry. In January gay couples could marry in 19 states. By December that number had skyrocketed to 35 — covering two thirds of the American people. The momentum for marriage is off the charts, and the joy and security marriage brings are now shared by millions of gay Americans — and their families, their friends, and their communities. The conversation about the freedom to marry and gay people is now underway in every corner of the country.

But winning is not won, and it’s not a done deal until it’s done. Couples in 15 states are still denied the freedom to marry, and even those living in freedom-to-marry states risk discrimination and instability as they travel, work, or visit family and friends in other parts of the country. As we redouble our work to finish the job next year, let’s remember and celebrate the top 10 marriage moments of 2014.

Freedom by Any Means

Freedom by Any Means

In this powerful follow-up to her Essence bestseller Forbidden Fruit, Betty DeRamus explores the ingenious ways slaves wrestled freedom for themselves and their loved ones. In Forbidden Fruit DeRamus told the real-life love stories of enslaved African Americans whose relationships with each other and whites flourished in spite of the horrendous circumstances of the antebellum period. With the same lyrical style and attention to detail, Freedom By Any Means explains how African Americans resorted to using extraordinary methods to maintain their seemingly impossible personal relationships during this time of terror. Besides the tactics of running away together or raising money to buy their freedom, loved ones filed successful lawsuits, became military spies or counterspies, and used rumors of voodoo to create bluffs and tricks. Riveting and surprising, Betty DeRamus captures the tumultuous lives of the humans in inhumane situations who were able to salvage their families and marriages and achieve freedom together in spite of tremendous odds. Freedom By Any Means also features the return of many of the beloved figures from her previous book Forbidden Fruit, including Lucy Nichols, Al and Margaret Wood, and Sylvia and Louis Stark. This inspiring account steeped in rich historical research attests to the resolve of the human spirit and is a welcome addition to the library of American historical texts on this period.

Liberty and Freedom: A Visual History of America’s Founding Ideas

Liberty and freedom: Americans agree that these values are fundamental to our nation, but what do they mean? How have their meanings changed through time? In this new volume of cultural history, David Hackett Fischer shows how these varying ideas form an intertwined strand that runs through the core of American life. Fischer examines liberty and freedom not as philosophical or political abstractions, but as folkways and popular beliefs deeply embedded in American culture. Tocqueville called them “habits of the heart.” From the earliest colonies, Americans have shared ideals of liberty and freedom, but with very different meanings. Like DNA these ideas have transformed and recombined in each generation. The book arose from Fischer’s discovery that the words themselves had differing origins: the Latinate “liberty” implied separation and independence. The root meaning of “freedom” (akin to “friend”) connoted attachment: the rights of belonging in a community of freepeople. The tension between the two senses has been a source of conflict and creativity throughout American history. Liberty & Freedom studies the folk history of those ideas through more than 400 visions, images, and symbols. It begins with the American Revolution, and explores the meaning of New England’s Liberty Tree, Pennsylvania’s Liberty Bells, Carolina’s Liberty Crescent, and “Don’t Tread on Me” rattlesnakes. In the new republic, the search for a common American symbol gave new meaning to Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, Miss Liberty, and many other icons. In the Civil War, Americans divided over liberty and freedom. Afterward, new universal visions were invented by people who had formerly been excluded from a free society–African Americans, American Indians, and immigrants. The twentieth century saw liberty and freedom tested by enemies and contested at home, yet it brought the greatest outpouring of new visions, from Franklin Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms to Martin Luther King’s “dream” to Janis Joplin’s “not

Freedom to Serve

Freedom to Serve

On the eve of America’s entry into World War II, African American leaders pushed for inclusion in the war effort and, after the war, they mounted a concerted effort to integrate the armed services. Harry S. Truman’s decision to issue Executive Order 9981 in 1948, which resulted in the integration of the armed forces, was an important event in twentieth Jon E. Taylor gives an account of the presidential order as an event which forever changed the U.S. armed forces, and set a political precedent for the burgeoning civil rights movement. Including press releases, newspaper articles, presidential speeches, and biographical sidebars, Freedom to Serve introduces students to an underexamined event while illuminating the period in a new way. Critical Moments in American History is a series of supplemental books designed specifically for undergraduate history courses, providing students with the opportunity to examine a specific event within the context of both narrative history and primary source documents.

On the Road to Freedom

On the Road to Freedom

This in-depth look at the civil rights movement goes to the places where pioneers of the movement marched, sat-in at lunch counters, gathered in churches; where they spoke, taught, and organized; where they were arrested, where they lost their lives, and where they triumphed. Award-winning journalist Charles E. Cobb Jr., a former organizer and field secretary for SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), knows the journey intimately. He guides us through Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, back to the real grassroots of the movement. He pays tribute not only to the men and women etched into our national memory but to local people whose seemingly small contributions made an impact. We go inside the organizations that framed the movement, travel on the “Freedom Rides” of 1961, and hear first-person accounts about the events that inspired Brown vs. Board of Education. An essential piece of American history, this is also a useful travel guide with maps, photographs, and sidebars of background history, newspaper coverage, and firsthand interviews.

Psycho Steve – I Swam the Solent to Freedom. No Jail Can Hold Me

When a GBP 1 million construction deal starts to go pear shaped, and a London heavy mob working for the opposition ransack his house, Stephen Moyle is out for revenge. In a tale of violence and adventure via the North of England and Canada, Stephen recounts the events that led to a 3 and a half year jail term and his eventual sectioning. Having taken revenge of the mob that was terrorising his family and business deals, Stephen was imprisoned in HMP Lewis; but with the voices of God Almighty and the Devil guiding his thoughts Stephen’s actions on the inside were to get him moved to HMP Camp Hill, Isle of Wight, from which he was to make his daring escape. Having scaled the prison walls and made his way through the razor wire, a scratched and bloody Stephen set off to swim across the Solent back to his family. His escape mobilised the D11 specialist police unit and the hunt began…Whilst on the run, Stephen returned to his scamming and thieving ways, but despite it all he found time to marry his long-term girlfriend Judith. But after the wedding things went from bad to worse as the voice of God was still present in Stephen’s thoughts; after a publican is almost killed the D11 squad close in and Stephen is returned to prison. Stephen is eventually released but his spell on the outside is short lived when he is re-arrested for GBH on his wife. At the court hearing, Stephen was sectioned for life and sent to Broadmoor Secure Hospital.
