Family of Baby Girl, Who Was Stabbed and Put in Heated Oven, Hold Funeral for the 20-Month-Old

Royalty Floyd, the 20-month-old Mississippi toddler who was allegedly stabbed and then placed in a heated oven by her own grandmother, was laid to rest on Saturday in Clarksdale.

The family of the slain baby girl came together to say their final goodbyes dressed in pink, per request of Royalty’s mother Veronica Jones, who said it was her daughter’s “favorite color” on Facebook.

“You are gone from this earth but you will forever be here in my heart. You were really truly one of the most beautiful creations that God had ever made and I would like to thank God for bringing you into my life,” Veronica wrote ahead of Royalty’s service.

At the funeral, Royalty’s grandfather delivered a tearful eulogy about his late granddaughter.

“She was ‘Big Girl.’ But from the day she was born, she was granddaddy’s baby girl. And she knew it,” Royalty’s grandfather James Harris said, WREG-TV reported.

“I miss her,” Harris continued. “But she’ll always be with me. Always.”

Royalty’s father John Floyd, who is still in shock over his daughter’s gruesome death, also managed to say a few words at the funeral.

“I still find it unbelievable to tell you the truth,” John said, WREG-TV reported.

“And to try and make heads or tails of what happened, it’s still something I can’t comprehend right now. It ain’t soaking in for some reason. I’m thinking one day this is all something that isn’t real,” John added.

On Oct. 15, authorities were called to a residence in the small city of Shaw after a family member discovered Royalty’s lifeless body burnt and stabbed inside a heated oven.

Royalty was alive when her grandmother, 48-year-old Carolyn Jones allegedly placed her inside the oven.

A deputy coroner at the Bolivar County Coroner’s office in Mississippi told The Bolivar Commercial that the young child died “from sharp stab wounds and inhaling the heated air in the oven.”

On the night of the little girl’s death, Carolyn was immediately taken into custody and has been charged with first-degree murder, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to PEOPLE.

Carolyn is currently being represented by a public defender.  PEOPLE could not immediately reach the public defender.

When contacted by the Associated Press, a public defender declined to comment, saying he’s still learning about the case.

The Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department also told PEOPLE, the child “was living at the residence with Jones at the time of the murder.”

“I’ve been in law enforcement a long time, 26 years almost. Some of the most horrific scenes I’ve seen in law enforcement involve children. Those are some of the— they have an effect on us. We don’t want it to happen, but unfortunately, things like this happen,” Bolivar County Sheriff Kevin Williams said in a press conference on Oct. 16, WREG reported.

When asked for a motive, Williams said, “We are trying to figure that out ourselves. We have no idea at this point.”

Royalty’s mother also created a GoFundMe and raised over $ 6,000 to cover Royalty’s funeral costs.

When Families Can’t Afford Their Child’s Funeral, Patricia Quinn Is There to Help

For Philadelphia funeral director Patricia Quinn, helping bereaved families bury their children is tough enough.

But finding out they can’t afford to hold a funeral for their children, let alone bury them, was heartbreaking.

“It’s so devastating,” says Quinn, 49, the mother of a 15-year-old girl. “Most of the parents are young. They barely have insurance on themselves, let alone on their kid.”

So she decided to do something about it.

In March 2006, she founded Final Farewell (finalfarewell.org), a nonprofit that has so far paid for funerals, headstones, graves or urns for more than 500 children in Pennsylvania and across the country.

“She’s probably the single most dedicated human being I’ve ever met,” says Sylvia Urrata, a former bereavement care coordinator at the Philadelphia medical examiner’s office. “She’s never once declined to help with any child I had.”

The very first family Quinn helped was that of Eddie Lichtenhahn, the 9-year-old son of a Philadelphia police officer who died suddenly of a brain aneurysm in February 2006. She saw a flier for a ‘Beef ‘n Beer’ fundraiser for the boy’s funeral costs and knew she could help—ultimately negotiating a lower price for his headstone and then pitching in with a $ 500 donation.

“I couldn’t thank her enough,”  the child’s father, Ed, 59, tells PEOPLE. “It meant a lot to us and it always will. I’ve always said to her — whatever she needed, I’d be there for her.”

For the first couple of years Quinn had to seek out families to help through death notices in local newspapers. But after a while, she developed a network of social workers at local hospitals and the local medical examiner’s office who would contact her when they had someone in need, she says. Finances are often tight but Quinn refuses to turn anyone down.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” she says. “I cannot imagine having your child pass away.”

Debbie Reynolds And Carrie Fisher Will Be Buried Together In Joint Funeral Service

Mother-daughter duo Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher will be buried in a joint funeral service together at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills, the Associated Press reports.

No date has been set for the private service, but a large public memorial is also being considered. The pair will rest nearby a number of other actors and celebrities, including Lucille Ball, Bette Davis and Liberace.

After experiencing a heart attack onboard a plane, Fisher died Tuesday at age 60. Just one day later, after helping arrange plans for her daughter’s funeral with son Todd Fisher, Reynolds was rushed to the hospital and died of a stroke at age 84

“She wanted to be with Carrie,” Todd told Variety.

A star of old Hollywood, Reynolds’ most notable film appearance is in 1952’s “Singin’ in the Rain,” although she remained in the tabloids for years thanks to continued screen appearances and famous friendships. Her marriage to singer Eddie Fisher produced two children, who both followed in their parents’ showbiz footsteps.

But the mother and daughter seemed to have a particular connection.

A photo by Lawrence Schiller showing a 6-year-old Fisher watching her mother perform seemed to perfectly depict the pair, and was shared widely following news of their deaths.

Their relationship was not always so easy, though ― mother and daughter were often estranged for long periods of time.

Having been raised with all the glitz, glamour, cameras and spotlights of her famous parents, Fisher began experimenting with party drugs in her teenage years, and pursuing an acting career for herself meant she would only be leaning further into the Hollywood scene. Later, a bipolar diagnosis would provide another hurdle to her well-being.

Fisher’s big break came with the first “Star Wars” installment in 1977, released when she was 20. At age 28, she went to rehab for drug abuse; around that time she was also diagnosed with her mental health condition. Fisher translated her memories of this tumultuous time into the loosely biographical Postcards from the Edge, which she later adapted into a movie starring Meryl Streep.

Fisher was a staunch and candid advocate for mental healthcare, along with her mother. But Reynolds has admitted that her daughter’s disorder, and struggle with drugs, took a hefty toll. At one point, they didn’t speak for about a decade.

After decades of turmoil, however, the two seemed to become closer than ever in their final years.

“I would say that Carrie and I have finally found happiness. I admire her strength in survival,” Reynolds told Oprah Winfrey in a 2011 interview largely about her relationship with her daughter.

“I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears, but she was worth it,” Reynolds said.

“There’s very few women from her generation who worked like that, who just kept a career going all her life, and raised children, and had horrible relationships, and lost all her money, and got it back again,” Fisher told NPR’s Terry Gross in November. (Reynolds’ three marriages ended contentiously; she declared bankruptcy in 1997 after a casino investment failed.)

“I mean, she’s had an amazing life, and she’s someone to admire.”

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds’ Family Considering a Joint Funeral, Todd Fisher Says

The family of Debbie Reynolds and her daughter Carrie Fisher are reportedly considering a joint funeral for the late stars, according to Todd Fisher, Reynolds’ son.

TMZ reported the Hollywood icon’s family members are leaning toward a dual service for the mother/daughter team, with a private, small ceremony staged before a larger memorial service.

“That is my preference,” Reynolds’ son Fisher, 58, told E! of the joint plans. “Obviously it’s not finalized, but I think that sounds like a grand idea given the beautiful story between them.”

Todd explained that while there is currently no date and no confirmed location for the mother-daughter funeral and memorial, plans are in process, ABC News reported.

Carrie, 60, was aboard an 11-hour flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday when she went into cardiac arrest. She later died Tuesday in the hospital.

Reynolds died a day later at the age of 84. According to reports, she was only thinking about daughter Carrie in her final moments. Todd said she told him hours before she was rushed to the hospital: “I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie,” according to TMZ.

After their deaths, Todd tweeted a touching drawing of his mother and sister — writing, “This is a beautiful love story to witness in my 58 years. I miss them both so much. Love is everlasting.”

In addition to Todd, both are survived Carrie’s daughter Billie Lourd, 24.

There is Nothing Dead in This Grandiose Former Funeral Establishment of the City of Paris.

2015-09-27-1443379118-5206737-104mainpix.JPG

Art Galore.

The 104, as it is called, spelled out in French as Le Centquatre-Paris, is a multimedia art center partly funded by the city of Paris. Located in a vast compound of gigantic halls and structures, it houses dance floors, exhibit halls, stores, libraries, workshop classes and stages. Calling itself an artistic and cultural factory, the place is geared towards public service — Art as a public service is definitely a great concept!

On any given day a buzz of artists, dancers, yogis, actors, painters, sculptors, fill the cavernous space with laughter and life. Visitors pop up at the arts library, shoppers stroll through the Emmaus thrifstore. It’s at the same time neighborhoods hang-out for young skaters, and an elite art space for openings and happenings.

Its success is real and tangible. You can witness art in various forms glow right under your eyes, and see how art really is a street expression in its best form. Over 60 percent of the performing artists at the 104 are not French.

2015-09-27-1443380423-538875-104logo.png

The fall schedule of exhibition is heavy with many new shows coming up: dance performances, visual arts, circus acts, theater and music fests. Solo acts or ensemble pieces, no matter what month you are able to go, several art forms will be on display or happening, including a ball in April open to all. About 50 artists in residence are planned to offer their creations for the 2015-2016 season.

An official opening was held Sept. 26 to present the 25,000 square feet of available galleries and open spaces to the public for the new season. On Oct. 3, a Nuit Blanche (White Night) is planned, when the space will stay open all night. The calendar is so full of events that it would be impossible to see and hear everything offered to each senses.

Les Pompes-Funèbres : From Death to Life.

Located on the site of a former municipal undertaker, the name comes from the original entrance’s address, at 104 rue d’Aubervilliers. This was not the mom and pop funeral home where one would visit one deceased family member in a flower-filled room and weep. This was where hundreds of horse-drawn hearses used to park and be maintained. Now an artistic factory, it churns out events and gatherings at a vertiginous speed.

The buildings were erected in 1873 by the diocese, ruled by religious staff; later on, with the separation of state and church, the city created in 1905 the Service municipal des pompes funèbres (Municipal Service of Funeral Process), considered at the times as a liberal progress, as it meant that from then on, regardless of religion or condition, everyone was due a proper funeral.

Before that, divorced women, suicide victims, atheists, all were to be buried at night without any dignified ceremony or family members present. The municipal monopole was taking care of everything, from coffins to hearses, from porters to cemeteries. One of the important rituals after a death was to wrap the front door of the building where the deceased laid with massive black curtains on each side of the front door – those were called the pompes.

This black veil was used until the 1980s. The Municipal Monopole was still in practice until the middle of 1997. Since then, the ceremonial is now left to family and private companies.

2015-09-27-1443379187-2043800-104hearse.jpg

At the Pompes Funèbres, 27,000 hearses were in use, with a staff of 1,400, only forty of which were women. Carpenters, wood workers, steel workers, mechanics, auto body specialists, seamstresses, cooks for the on-site workers’ cafeteria. Civil servants, horse caterers and other employees were lodged on the premises. There was even a football team, musicians, and firefighters dedicated to the ensemble of constructions. The funeral parlor did not handle corpses – that was done in private parlors. Except in times of war, when the bodies of soldiers were given back to their families.

Creativity at its Best.

So the place was truly always alive (pun intended) in a way, but for some 15 years when it was closed down, before the re-birth as an art center in 2008. When I last visited at the beginning of September, I saw several artists using the multi-levels center floor as a dance stage and yoga space, kids running around huge sculptures, workers having a sandwich on beach chairs, the feel of community involvement was very tangible.

2015-09-27-1443379310-119530-104weipei.jpg

At each end of the space giant art pieces jetted to the open sky – this is a place that could easily accommodate one of Louise Bourgeois giant spider sculptures. Not every art space can. An enormous funky piece made of hundreds of bicycles wheels and frames in a sculpture by Chinese Al Weiwei named “Stacked” was taking one end of the forum – representing the transportation mode of his native country, while a metal snake of rust-color boxes was being installed for the upcoming vernissage.

2015-09-27-1443379253-9869926-104sculpture.jpg

Concerts for all ages and all style are planned for the fall schedule. Several art shows will also open at the various venues encompassed in the buildings. It’s a real artistic community all housed under one roof. A glass roof that is.

The architecture is reminiscent of the former market halles (market halls) that were once famously popular in the center of the capital. Why waste beautiful edifices? The eco friendly turn-around of the classic buildings is a testament of the creativity of its new users, all artists.

Side Shows.

A food truck selling pizzas is permanently parked inside the Centquatre. The Emmaus store resales clothes and furniture pieces at very low prices, and involves members of the community to work there. Canvas beach chairs invite people to lounge at will. Several corners are meant to be used as sitting areas, or even picnic settings.

The café’s menu is full of childhood favorites, such as toasts, soft eggs, fries and milk-shakes. It is named the Café Caché (the Hidden Café). Another resting place for food is the Grand Central restaurant, the loft-like space offering traditional French dishes at a medium range price – think sausage and lentils, beef cheeks, mussels and fries, rabbit with granny smith apples, steak with Béarnaise sauce, etc..

2015-09-27-1443379498-4706031-grandcentral.jpg

The CentQuatre had a challenge — to fill the enormous spaces spread on several city blocks, and despite its sheer size, the place works — it is both a community haven and a convivial space for all. Despite being located in an untrendy area of Paris, that has not stopped Parisians of every corner to make the trip for the sake of art. Over half a million visitors/spectators came by last year. Bravo!

2015-09-27-1443379416-1982463-104wide.jpg

If you go:
Le CentQuatre is at 5 rue Curial, Paris 75019.
Open Tuesday-Friday noon-7 p.m. Weekends 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Closed Monday.
Métro stop: Riquet.
Bus 54 or 60.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. Chris Martin paid tribute to Vice President Joe Biden’s son Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer last week, during his funeral Saturday.

Martin volunteered to perform at Biden’s funeral service in Wilmington, Delaware, when he found out that the former Delaware attorney general was a big Coldplay fan, according to a White House official. Martin performed an acoustic version of Coldplay’s “Til Kingdom Come” near the end of the service. Afterwards, Martin hugged the vice president and his wife, Jill Biden.

Earlier during the ceremony, President Barack Obama gave an emotional eulogy, praising the former attorney general. “Beau Biden was an original,” Obama said at the St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church. “He was a good man, a man of character, a man who loved deeply and was loved in return.”

Joseph “Beau” Biden III was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013, three years after suffering a minor stroke. He died at age 46.

Funeral For B.B. King Held In Mississippi Delta Hometown

INDIANOLA, Miss. (AP) — B.B. King’s early life personified the blues: He was born to dirt-poor sharecroppers in the cotton country of the Mississippi Delta and left alone by the deaths of his mother and grandmother when he was a child. But he never let those circumstances hold him back or define him, a minister said Saturday at the funeral of the blues legend.

“Hands that once picked cotton would someday pick guitar strings on a national and international stage. Amazing,” the Rev. Herron Wilson said in a standing-room-only sanctuary at Bell Grove Missionary Baptist Church in King’s hometown of Indianola, Mississippi. King, whose distinctive guitar style influenced generations of entertainers, was 89 when he died May 14 in Las Vegas. At his request, his body was returned to his native Mississippi for a final homecoming.

“He will forever be the king of the blues,” Stevie Wonder said in a spoken tribute that was played at the funeral, although he did not attend.

About 500 people filled the sanctuary of the church, a red brick structure that sits in a field off of B.B. King Road in Indianola. More than 200 people who couldn’t get into the sanctuary watched a live broadcast of the funeral in the church’s fellowship hall, many waving hand-held fans with a black-and-white photo of a smiling King hugging his black electric guitar, Lucille.

At the beginning of the service, family members filed past King’s open casket, which had an image of Lucille embroidered on the padded white cloth inside the lid. Later, the casket was closed and covered with a large arrangement of red roses.

Christopher Clouser, a businessman and longtime friend of King, said King instructed him to deliver several messages during the funeral. He sent love to family and friends and thanked his bandmates and other entertainers.

Clouser said King also wanted people to know how uncomfortable he was “riding in the back of the car that Eric was driving” — a reference to “Riding With the King,” an album that King and Eric Clapton released in 2000 with a cover photo of the two guitarists on a road trip.

Country singer Marty Stuart said King created a musical legacy for the home state they share.

“As a fellow Mississippian, I’m so proud to stand in his shadow as I walk across the world,” Stuart said.

On the way into the church, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant recalled spending time with King in the bluesman’s tour bus before a concert last year in Indianola. Bryant said King was proud of being from Mississippi.

Noting the thousands of people who came to Indianola for the public viewing Friday and funeral Saturday, Bryant said: “He would have loved to know that one more time he’s helping the Mississippi Delta.”

Silvan Zingg, a boogie-woogie pianist from Switzerland, played with King at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2011 and described it as one of the best days of his life. He booked a last-minute flight from Milan to Memphis on Friday so he could attend the funeral, and he ended up playing during the service.

“To be here today … with his all family and his friends — it means everything to me,” Zingg said.

Tony Coleman, King’s drummer for 37 years, said King never referred to himself as King of the Blues, an honorary title others used.

“He felt like the blues was the king, and it was his responsibility to keep it king,” Coleman said as he entered the church.

A children’s choir based at the B.B. King Museum clapped as they sang gospel songs, including one with the chorus: “Let’s all get together, bring peace to the world.”

President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton each sent a letter, and those were read aloud by Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, a friend of King.

“The blues has lost its king and America has lost a legend,” Obama said. “No one worked harder than B.B. No one did more to spread the gospel of the blues.”

Clinton recalled playing two gigs with King: “I was his backup sax man.”

As rain fell after the funeral Saturday, King was buried at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, which opened in 2008 to tell his life’s story. The museum will develop a memorial garden, with benches and a water wall, around the gravesite.

This Is What Joan Rivers Hoped Her Funeral Would Look Like

Joan Rivers accomplished an incredible amount in her life, and it was apparent that she was always thinking of what was next to come.

As a woman of very particular tastes, Rivers knew exactly how she hoped her funeral would be when the day came, and she wrote about it in her 2012 book, “I Hate Everyone … Starting with Me.”

She was also a woman who loved the death reel at the Oscars:

A good death reel can almost compensate for five hours of French actors trying to make adorable acceptance speeches. One of my favorite things to do is guess which of the dead actors will get the most applause and who’s going to be surprisingly underappreciated. It’s tricky you can’t always tell. Some years the most applause go to whoever died young and tragically; other years it goes to the old and beloved. I really love it when the Academy leaves a deadie out of the reel and the error of omission becomes a huge cause célèbre. Remember a few years ago when they left Bea Arthur out of the death reel [at the Oscars]? Bea Arthur! How did they leave Bea Arthur out? She was in “Mame;” she was in “All in the Family;” she was in “Maude;” she was a “Golden Girl,” for God’s sake! Bea was not only one of Hollywood’s leading ladies, she was one of Hollywood’s leading men! There are still people talking about that horrible gaffe and to this day, in Beverly Hills, when the subject comes up, people say Bea Arthur’s name in a muffled whisper like they used to do when they said “cancer.”

Rivers died on Sept. 4 at the age of 81 following complications from a procedure on her vocal cords. Her actual funeral is planned for Sept. 7 at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan, the temple’s spokeswoman Elizabeth Fezrine told CNN. Details, including the time and if the public will be invited to attend, are not known at this time.

‘Mike & Molly’: Victoria Convinces Molly To Smoke Marijuana, Leading To Hilarity In The Funeral Home

One side effect of Molly’s mid-life crisis on “Mike & Molly” is that she’s open to having a lot more fun and taking more chances. While Mike was discovering some rather explicit writing on her laptop, Molly was spending some quality time with her sister, Victoria. Molly had always been the good girl, while Victoria was the wild child who knew how to party, and score great weed.

She convinced the new-and-improved Molly to loosen up and light up, which led to a hilarious romp through the funeral home where Victoria works as a beautician. Molly was able to get over her fear of dead people, and even participated in one of Victoria’s favorite pastimes: climbing into caskets.

The two jumped inside a pair of side-by-side caskets and tried to hide when the cleaning lady came in. But they were high and snacking and could not control the giggles, or their own impish behavior. When the cleaning lady came up for a closer look, Molly popped up and offered her a Bugle. The woman, understandably, was terrified.

While we have no idea where Molly is going in her life — we suspect she doesn’t either — it sure is proving a blast watching Melissa McCarthy bring something new, and yet familiar to her legions of big-screen fans, to the role.

Keep up with the hilarity on the all-new “Mike & Molly” every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
