Celebrity Kids Are Getting in on Over-The-Top Dorm Room Trend: See Their Lavish College Digs

A simple bedspread and a poster stuck on the wall doesn’t cut it for college dorm decor anymore.

Today, incoming undergrads are upping their decorating agenda (and budget!) to give their dorms a more luxurious vibe. Many kids go all out, spending money on throw pillows, extra seating, beautiful storage and fun wall art to make their blank-slate digs feel like a Pinterest-perfect home.

In 2017, two Ole Miss students’ impeccably decorated dorm room went viral on social media. Their monogrammed pillows and tufted headboards looked incredibly high-end, but the girls did the whole thing on a budget, shopping at stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s to update their once-dreary space.

The same year, two freshmen at Texas State University showed off their lofted twin beds with canopies and faux brick wallpaper, which gave their room a city apartment vibe.

Now, celebrities’ kids are hopping on the trend of sprucing up their college living spaces.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards helped decorate her daughter Sophia Umansky’s suite-style dorm in Washington, D.C., with luxe velvet seating that doubles as shoe storage and gold wall fans that make it feel more like home.

“We really wanted this room to reflect her style so that she would feel like she was bringing a little piece of home with her here,” Kyle told PEOPLE of the space, which they decorated with pieces from HomeGoods. “It’s hard when you leave home, so we wanted her to feel comfy and just feel like it was her own personal space.”

“It’s not going to be a cookie-cutter dorm room where everybody’s room looks the same,” she said.

Umansky wanted a “retro glam” style, so the mother-daughter duo shopped with a blush and white color scheme in mind and added pops of gold.

Lisa Rinna‘s daughter Delilah Belle Hamlin moved into her first apartment in N.Y.C. in March ahead of her freshman year at New York University, where she starts in January. In decorating her two-bedroom, two-bathroom space, the 20-year-old runway model opted for youthful decorations like gold-accented bubble chairs suspending from the ceiling, furry millennial pink pillows and a delicate metal chandelier above her bed.

“Initially I wanted black, white, and gray, but the design team suggested a pop of color,” she told Town & Country in their August issue. “We went with pink, and I’m glad we did.”

Hamlin is hardly the first young celeb to forgo the college dorm experience for a swanky apartment. Before starting at NYU in 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen reportedly dropped $ 7.3 million on four penthouse apartments in Greenwich village, turning them into a massive 5,725-square-foot abode. Although they decorated the space, the Olsens never lived in the apartment, instead choosing to live separately. Ultimately, they both dropped out of the university.

However, many celebrities and their children have opted for the traditional dorm route, and have even found ways to transform their hall-style rooms (with shared bathrooms for everyone!) into glam college crash pads. Boston University alumna Olivia Culpo teamed up with eBay for an affordable line of dorm decor to make college feel more like home.

“My dorm room showcased my personality with a cozy white rug and fresh flowers. I also tried pink wallpaper,” she told PEOPLE. “Now, would opt for a more minimal, clean look,” she said. “I might also add some gold accents to make it even more stylized.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Just Took the Next Step by Getting a New Dog

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a new addition: a pup to share their lives, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The couple got the dog — believed to be a Labrador — in early summer, and the pooch has been joining them at their country getaway in the Cotswolds area and Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London, a source says.

Harry and Meghan’s new best friend will be a welcome addition to their rural walks. Dog lover Meghan, 37, had to leave one of her pets, Bogart, behind when she arrived in London from Toronto last November, when the couple got engaged. The rescue dog, a companion for Meghan’s Beagle Guy, was given to friends.

Guy, meanwhile, has been embedded into Meghan’s new royal life, and was at her feet as she sat for her hair and makeup on her wedding morning.

A spokeswoman at Kensington Palace declined to comment on the new arrival.

Harry and Meghan’s move mirrors that of his brother Prince William and Kate Middleton, who got Cocker Spaniel Lupo shortly after their wedding, settling him into life with them in Anglesey, North Wales.

While Harry and George played basketball, Meghan lounged by the pool with Amal and helped look after the Clooneys’ 14-month-old twins, Ella and Alexander, according to the outlet. The Clooneys also reportedly held a dinner party to celebrate their guests.

Lingerie Is Getting a Lift From Newcomers Harnessing Digital, Fit Technologies

LONDON — A sea change in how women view bras — along with fit technologies and social media — is helping a clutch of direct-to-consumer entrants make headway in the lingerie category as some of its brick-and-mortar stalwarts grapple with slowing sales.
This includes American lingerie brand Lively, founded by a former Victoria’s Secret executive, who spied an opportunity in more inclusive brand messaging and fit innovations.
“Victoria’s Secret owns a third to 40 percent, depending on what data you look at, of the U.S. lingerie market, which is around $ 13 billion,” said Michelle Cordeiro Grant, founder and chief executive officer of Lively. According to Zion Market Research, the global lingerie market was valued at $ 38.9 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach $ 59.5 billion by 2024.
Cordeiro Grant is a former Victoria’s Secret executive and it was during her time at the brand that she noticed a potential for differentiation in the sector. Sales were down 5 percent across Victoria Secret stores in the U.S. and Canada for 2018, according to L Brands’ June 2018 sales report.
“Their point of view on lingerie is how do women feel when their significant other is looking at them. What I felt from a branding

Meghan King Edmonds Is ‘Getting Miserable’ 33 Weeks into Pregnancy with Twins

Meghan King Edmonds is feeling the strain of carrying twins.

The pregnant Real Housewives of Orange County star, who is expecting twin boys with husband Jim Edmonds, is 33 weeks pregnant and officially in the discomfort stage.

“I’m getting miserable,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively, laughing. “I feel like the babies are like, in my ears. And most definitely in my lungs. I am really struggling with breathing. You can really tell in my Instagram Stories. I’ll listen to them back and I’m breathing so heavily just doing nothing. Plus, I can’t feel my legs. And bending over is, like, a thing in the past.”

“I’m so ridiculously pregnant, I can hardly move off the couch,” she adds. “We just had a cleaning lady come today — I don’t even know how she did, because I’m too tired to look. That’s where I’m at.”

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

Making matters even harder is that Meghan has 1½-year-old daughter Aspen moving around.

“I have a nanny and she’s been so good — and Jimmy’s been so helpful too — but waking up with Aspen in the morning, that’s even hard,” Meghan, 33, explains. “I can get her out of the crib and stuff, but going up and down my stairs is tough. I want her to be able to have fun and go to the park, but I can’t walk around the park anymore. It makes me sad. It’s a hard place to be.”

Luckily, Meghan’s situation is temporary. While 40 weeks is a full-term for a single baby, twins are considered full-term at 37 weeks, with the average twin pregnancy lasting 36 weeks.

“I just left the doctor and basically, it could be any day,” Meghan says. “Ideally I’d like to make it to 34, 35. They’ll be fine if I gave birth right now. They might have to spend some extra time in the hospital, but they’ll be fine.”

With her boys on the way any day now, it’s no surprise that Meghan plans to take it easy on Mother’s Day.

“My mom just invited us to go over to her house for breakfast,” she says. “My step-son has sporting games all day long on Mother’s Day. I’m just hoping I have babies cooking inside me more than anything. The longer they’re in there, the better!”

It’s a far different day from last year, Meghan’s first Mother’s Day. Having not yet moved to St. Louis — where they live close to Jim’s two stepchildren, ages 9 and 12 — full-time, Jim joined Meghan in California, taking her out to “a great dinner” and buying her a “fabulous present.”

Asked if Jim had planned anything special this year, Meghan wasn’t sure. “My husband, he didn’t even remember it was Mother’s Day until a few days ago. Now that he’s reminded, he may have something up his sleeve!” she says.

RELATED VIDEO: The Real Housewives of Orange County Go Makeup-Free For PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue

Not matter what he does, Meghan — who announced on her blog in late November that she and Jim, 47, were expecting sons after undergoing in vitro fertilization again — says that motherhood has been present enough.

“Everything has become so fulfilling,” she says. “Jimmy and I were just talking about the fact that we’ve forgotten what life is like before Aspen existed. It’s been a complete shift in my lifestyle. My life is just about my baby now. What did we do? We don’t remember. It’s like nothing matters anymore except what she’s doing and what we’re going to do with her. That’s been crazy and amazing.”

The Rocketeer is Getting an Animated Series Reboot

The Rocketeer is finally getting a reboot, but probably not the way you imagined.

Disney Junior has announced production on a new animated adventure series inspired by the 1980s Dave Stevens comic books and the 1991 film of the same name.

Aimed at kids aged 2-7 and their young-at-heart relatives, The Rocketeer will follow Kit, a young girl who receives a surprise package on her birthday revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who has the ability to fly with the help of a rocket-powered jet pack. The Bookish Magic Of Black Women Is Getting A Literary Festival

The Well-Read Black Girl has come a long way in just a couple of years.

Founded by creative strategist Glory Edim, the digital book club started as a way for her to talk about books with her friends. She took the name from a custom T-shirt her boyfriend gave her ― a nod to her bookishness ― and began posting book recommendations on Instagram. Now it’s an online community of more than 20,000, and Edim has begun regularly hosting in-person meetings as well.

Next up: A conference and festival held in Brooklyn, New York, which will be all about celebrating black women authors and creating a space for black women to share their literary passions and experiences.

The timing and location of the festival is telling ― just one week before the annual Brooklyn Book Festival. On a practical level, the choice will likely make things easier for authors to appear at both; the Well-Read Black Girl has already arranged meeting discussions with major writers such as Angela Flournoy and Margo Jefferson, and asks potential festival attendees to “Imagine the world’s best book club featuring an array of outstanding authors and writers, including Tayari Jones, Naomi Jackson, LaShonda Barnett, Tiphanie Yanique, Tia Williams, Jenna Wortham, Doreen St. Félix, and more.”

More important, the book world still frequently fails to make its spaces welcoming and inclusive of people of color, especially black women, or relegates them to token events addressing diversity or race in literature. Preceding the established festival with an event for black women provides a counterbalance to the whiteness of most shared literary spaces, an opportunity for black girls and women to celebrate their nerdy sides in a sisterly atmosphere.

In addition to author panels, talks and networking events, the festival promises special treats like a VIP kickoff party featuring a screening of author and filmmaker Kathleen Collins’ seminal, and rarely shown, 1982 film “Losing Ground.”

The festival addresses a long-neglected group of book readers, so it should be no surprise that Well-Read Black Girls has seen a surge of demand. Edim launched a Kickstarter on June 3 to support the event, and as of Tuesday morning had been funded to $ 17,000, exceeding its $ 15,000 goal.

HuffPost reached out to Edim about the project via email and will update the article accordingly. In the meantime, check out our past interview with Edim, for which she suggests 10 new books by women of color you should add to your 2017 TBR list.

Royal Trouble! Prince George Sobs After Getting Scolded by Kate at Pippa Middleton’s Wedding

There are usually a few tears at a wedding, and Pippa Middleton’s nuptials to financier James Matthews on Saturday were no exception.

Prince George, who served as a page boy for his aunt’s big day, appeared to cry after the ceremony at St. Mark’s Church in Englefield. According to reports, the 3-year-old royal was seen sobbing outside for a brief moment.

Determined to ensure nothing dampened the mood of her sister’s wedding day, Princess Kate was pictured giving her son a scolding. Photos showed Prince George pouting, seemingly embarrassed by the situation, but he perked up again soon after.

A video of the bride and groom leaving the church appears to show Kate having a strong word with George after he wanders behind Pippa and can be seen playing with her dress as she makes her big exit.

All eyes were on Prince George and 2-year-old Princess Charlotte, who served as a bridesmaid at the royal affair.

Proud parents Prince William and Kate watched as their royal toddlers, who were dressed in adorable outfits by Pepa and Co., prepared to make their way down the aisle.

After the ceremony, wedding guests told reporters that the children in the bridal party were “very” well-behaved during the ceremony. Unfortunately for George, it looks like he got into a bit of mischief afterwards!

Charlotte wore an ivory silk dress with a frilled collar, a nude pink sash and matching trim across the sleeves and neckline with hand-embroidered detailing. The bodice featured a vintage style lace panel and the dress carried a net petticoat with lace trim underneath. She also wore ivory opaque tights, beige soft leather shoes and a floral headband.

George wore an ivory double-breasted silk pleated shirt with Peter Pan collar and coordinating trim detail paired with knickerbockers in pale olive Vienne silk and a matching cummerbund.

WATCH: How Princess Kate Is Changing the Royal Parenting Rules

George adorably channeled dad William, who was a page boy in his uncle Prince Andrew’s wedding to Sarah Ferguson in 1986.

No doubt mom Kate passed along a few helpful tips to her 2-year-old daughter before the big day. She and Pippa made an adorable pair of bridesmaids as little girls in their uncle wedding ceremony in 1991.

RELATED: A Side-by-Side Comparison of Kate and Pippa’s Weddings

Pippa, 33, and Matthews, 41, became engaged in July 2016. The longtime couple has a “deep desire” to disappear from the spotlight in the longer term, a source told PEOPLE.

Another source said they are looking forward to settling down and “having children and leading a quiet life.”

We’ve All Felt Like This Little Girl Getting Dragged Around A Tiny Carousel

Sometimes you ride the horse. Other times, you get dragged.

A video shows a little girl named Sienna putting a hilarious twist on riding a carousel by lazily letting it pull her around.

The video, which was posted to YouTube late last month, shows Sienna slowly make a full revolution on the soft foam pads surrounding the small carousel.

The video’s description on YouTube reads, “Most children like to ride the animals on a roundabout. Not our daughter. Perhaps a future role as a zombie child in the Walking Dead awaits.”

Sienna responded to her newfound stardom in a follow-up video posted on Thursday that shows her rewatching her antics on a phone.

Who’s up for round two? Or as we call it, a Monday.

He’s ‘Excited but Nervous!’ How George Clooney Is Getting Ready to Be a Dad to Twins

When Amal Clooney visited her husband on the set of his upcoming film, Suburbicon, late last year in L.A., the Oscar winner displayed an unmistakable sense of pride.

George and Amal were both glowing,” a set source tells PEOPLE in the new issue. “There were hints and rumors about her being pregnant. She seemed careful with food and didn’t have any caffeine.”

Always gracious, Amal “greeted everyone with a friendly handshake and a huge smile. She acted very down-to-earth,” the source adds. “She didn’t ask for anything and just wanted to hang out in the background. George wouldn’t really let her, though. He would bring her around the set, beam and introduce her as ‘my wife, Amal.’ It was very cute to see how excited he was.”

Now the world knows that the former perennial bachelor, 55, who stunned everyone in 2014 by proposing to Amal, a Lebanese-British human-rights lawyer, is about to become a first-time father — times two.

Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Amal, 39, is expecting twins — a boy and a girl — this spring.

“George is excited but nervous,” says a source close to the couple’s inner circle. “He is excited about the kids, but also has the normal amount of nerves that come with being parents.”

For her part, Amal “strikes me as someone who’ll be a fantastic mother,” says another insider. “Intelligent, loving, funny, smart, nurturing. She doesn’t seem someone who will let kids get away with being Hollywood children.”

With houses in L.A. and Lake Como, the couple has been spending more time at their newly-renovated mansion just outside of London that they purchased for a reported $ 12 million shortly after their wedding in September 2014.

Both have continued to work but Amal “stopped traveling for dangerous missions months ago,” says another source. Clooney “knows how brilliant Amal is in her work and how nurturing of a person she is,” adds the source close to the couple’s inner circle. “He knows she will be a wonderful mother.”

As for the actor, he “hinted that he might be taking some time off,” says the Suburbicon source. “That would be very rare for him, but now it all adds up. He’s going to be the best dad.”

For much more about how the Clooneys are getting ready for parenthood, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

We’re Already Getting A Miniseries About The 2016 Election

We are 26 days into Donald Trump’s presidency, and there’s already a miniseries about the 2016 election on the horizon.

That’s right, you can soon channel your crippling panic about America’s federal horror show via an eight- to 10-hour drama from “Zero Dark Thirty” scribe Mark Boal and producer Megan Ellison, according to Deadline. Boal, who won an Oscar for writing “The Hurt Locker,” is expected to make his directorial debut and pen part of the series.

Boal and Ellison will work with Hugo Lindgren, the former New York Times and Hollywood Reporter editor who in 2014 launched Page 1, a company that develops movies and TV series based on recent news stories. Lindgren is reportedly compiling a team of investigative journalists in New York and Washington, D.C., to work on the project.

Whether or not a few months provides enough distance to process the nutty election we just endured is yet to be seen. It seems like this endeavor most closely resembles Game Change, the meticulously reported behind-the-scenes account of the 2008 election. Game Change started as a 2010 book and became an Emmy-winning HBO movie in 2012.

There’s no network attached to Boal and Ellison’s series yet. Showtime has already contributed to the election postmortem with “Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time,” a documentary that aired Feb. 3. PBS also dedicated a January episode of “Frontline” to chronicling how the hell Trump made it all the way to the White House. It’s almost like the whole thing is so dreadful that no one can think of anything else! Fire up your Hillary Clinton casting wish list now.

WATCH: Getting More Than Your Money’s Worth

We’ve all heard the expression, “You get what you paid for,” but we also all have experiences of feeling like we got little value for something we paid a lot for, and lots of value for something we got for little or no money (I’m hoping that certain YouTube videos fall into that category…). Maybe the real truth is that we get what we choose to get – that we are responsible for the amount of value we receive. And if that’s the case, choose to get maximum value from whatever you invest your time and money into. I hope this helps you get the most from this new year.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

Getting Gamers

Getting Gamers

Video games are big business. They can be addicting. They are available almost anywhere you go and are appealing to people of all ages. They can eat up our time, cost us money, even kill our relationships. But it’s not all bad! This book will show that rather than being a waste of time, video games can help us develop skills, make friends, succeed at work, form good habits, and be happy. Taking the time to learn what’s happening in our heads as we play and shop allows us to approach games and gaming communities on our own terms and get more out of them. With sales in the tens of billions of dollars each year, just about everybody is playing some kind of video game whether it’s on a console, a computer, a web browser, or a phone. Much of the medium’s success is built on careful (though sometimes unwitting) adherence to basic principles of psychology. This is something that’s becoming even more important as games become more social, interactive, and sophisticated. This book offers something unique to the millions of people who play or design games: how to use an understanding of psychology to be a better part of their gaming communities, to avoid being manipulated when they shop and play, and to get the most enjoyment out of playing games. With examples from the games themselves, Jamie Madigan offers a fuller understanding of the impact of games on our psychology and the influence of psychology on our games.

Obama Gives Kanye West Some Advice About Getting Into Politics

President Barack Obama gave Kanye West some advice about getting elected on Saturday.

The rapper recently announced he was running for president in 2020. Obama, alluding to the inability of House Republicans to find a new speaker, suggested Kanye could be a candidate for that position instead.

“You may have heard that Kanye is thinking about running for Speaker of the House. It couldn’t get any stranger,” Obama said at a fundraiser in San Francisco. He dispensed some tips ”in case Kanye is serious about this whole POTUS thing, or as Kanye calls it, ‘Peezy.'”

“Do you really think this country is going to elect a black guy from the south side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States?” Obama said. “That’s cray.”

“Saying you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy — that’s what’s known as ‘off message’ in politics,” he continued.

Obama also suggested that West’s appearances on “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” might serve him well in politics.

“You got to deal with strange characters who behave as if they are on a reality TV show,” Obama said.

Getting Lost and Getting Found

2015-08-19-1439989086-7303801-lostinthewoods.jpg

We’ve all gotten lost. Most of us first have the experience as children. It may have been in the woods or a crowded department store. Wherever it occurs it is terrifying. Small children often find it so frightening they must deny it. They do not say they are lost but rather, “My mommy is lost.”

Being lost is less a place than a state of mind that frightens us no matter how old we are. As adults we get lost more often in our lives than in the woods. But there are many parallels between losing our way in wilderness and in life. It remains an enormously uncomfortable experience that threatens to overwhelm our equilibrium. We are motivated not to see that we’re off track. The more we have invested in a goal, the harder it is to change direction despite mountains of evidence that we’re on the wrong path.

As humans we have evolved to a time where getting lost in life is pretty easy. In the beginning, as primitive animals, we were guided by biological instinct. With the progression to hunter-gatherers (the way of life for the vast majority of human existence) there was a seamless transition from birth to death. Everyone was in the family business, so to speak. One’s social circle and work was defined. The goals were concrete and communal. Ambivalence and conflict about what one should do had yet to be invented. Success was clearly defined and usually attainable.

Paleolithic life may be experiencing a renaissance in dietary circles but is still perceived as a rather undesirable existence. We fancy our contemporary world of choices an obvious improvement. But what it means to be successful has gotten complicated. Whatever form it takes, many perceive it skeptically or overwhelming if not impossible. This does not make for greater happiness. I imagine the typical hunter-gatherer enjoyed a better mood than your average modern human.

How happy or sad we are is another way of saying how found or lost we are. It is determined in large part by the distance between our present self and that self we think we should be, our ideal self. That gap can create an uncomfortable tension. We usually try to silence the discomfort by chasing quick fixes. Often we create a false self and conform to someone else’s model of living. We chase more of the things we know do not translate into happiness. As Viktor Frankl observed, we accumulate more and more to live by and less and less to live for. This makes us feel less alive and more vulnerable to the seductive trappings of other people’s agendas.

We run deeper into the woods. It is precisely because money or cars or shoes or food or sex is not quite what we want that we find ourselves thinking that perhaps more would be satisfying. When we have too much, it is because we have too little of what we need.

Emotions evolved as a signal to direct us toward or away from something. The tension created by the gap between who we are and who we feel we should be is an essential signal that can direct us toward one path and away from another. It is our inner compass. We will remain lost if that signal is anesthetized.

So how do we find our way out of the woods?

We all have inhabited our best self, no matter how fleetingly. We know it by how it makes us feel. There is no conflict, ambivalence, sense of time. We sense we are doing the right thing. The experience flows. Athletes call it being in the zone. It feels good.

We find ourselves by paying attention to when we are our best self. What are we doing? Who are we with? Where are we? Armed with these answers we have our compass. Life is lived one moment at a time. It is in that time frame that we make decisions about what we invest energy in, what we make the focus of our attention.

Directing our energy to inhabiting our best self has its challenges.

We tell ourselves stories to explain why we can’t be that person. We usually write this story at an early age when we did not have the tools to make changes. The story needs a rewrite. How do you understand the difference between what you have done and what you believe you ought to have done?

Many things are beyond our control. But we are free to choose what we will pay attention to, the meaning we will give to our life. If the goal is to improve the quality of our lives, happiness may be the wrong metric. Pleasure or happiness is simply the side effect of living our best self.

Federico Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita’ Getting A Remake Is Proof We’ve Gone Too Far

Clearly the film industry has run out of any and all good, original ideas. Sadly, the unstoppable remake machine is about to touch a cinematic classic.

On Thursday, AMBI Group announced plans to remake Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita.” The company has reached an agreement with the Italian director’s family and estate to make a modern retelling of the 1960 film. The filmmaker’s niece, Francesca Fellini, said in a statement that while the family has been approached about remakes and sequels before, AMBI Group’s Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi changed their minds.

The original “La Dolce Vita” follows Marcello Mastroianni’s gossip journalist over a week traveling through Rome. In a statement, Iervolino said that the contemporary remake of the film will be “every bit as commercial, iconic and award-worthy as the original.” We can’t help but wonder one thing, though: Why?

With nearly every movie being remade, adapted into a musical, reworked for a sequel, revamped for a modern interpretation or rebooted for the small screen, nothing is safe these days. Nope, not even a Palme d’Or-winning, influential Fellini classic. While there are some noteworthy and partially original recreations in the works, like Paul Feig’s all-female “Ghostbusters” and Netflix’s clever take on a “Wet Hot American Summer” prequel – it takes us back to the first day of Camp Firewood – the majority of other remakes are simply unnecessary.

What’s next, a “Citizen Kane” remake? Hey, why don’t we turn Ingmar Bergman’s filmography into a musical web series? What about a reboot of Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake? Brilliant!

Open Letter to Same Sex People Getting Married in Red States

Dear Same-Sex Wedding Participants in Red States:

If you live in one of the 14 states that have to suddenly grant marriage licenses to same sex couples, you may be tightening your tie and singing Old Fashioned Wedding on your way to City Hall. I’d like to help you navigate a few of the issues you may face when you go to get your marriage license. In 2005, my partner and I traveled to Toronto, Ontario to marry — same sex marriage was as new then in Toronto as it will be today in your red state. Many marriage offices will be unprepared. Here are four tips for dealing with the processes and people you may encounter.

Rejoice if your clerk is kind and helpful. Of course you’ll feel a certain trepidation about coming out to your Marriage Court clerk. You may be surprised, then, when you catch a clerk — like we did in Toronto — who is excited to help a bunch of same sex people obtain the full liberty of government benefits. When you get a good one, celebrate them just like you celebrate the union.

Decide who is the “husband” — for the form. To talk to the government, you fill out a form — getting married is no different. Until today, only marriages comprised of a “husband” and a “wife” were eligible to fill out the papers, so the forms will be gender coded. It can be an uncomfortable moment when you’re standing at the clerk’s counter, pen in hand, one looking over the other’s shoulder, and that’s the moment you have to decide which name goes over “husband” and which goes over “wife.” In advance, flip a coin, have a heavy talk, allocate a gender between the top and the bottom. But, work it out on the way. Our clerk in Toronto picked for us, and I still disagree with his choice.

If you get a bad clerk, take a minute…. You may encounter a nasty clerk. Don’t jump to the conclusion that the nastiness comes from hate — he might be an indifferent government worker. Just this year, at a city hall “gay” wedding, we encountered a cranky clerk and an imperious officiant — in San Francisco. It’s not always bigotry — sometimes, it’s just bad manners. You should still push back, but on their conduct, not their motives.

Make Your Own Choice. You may get a bona fide homophobe, hissing, “You want to get married to each other?” Of course, if the clerk refuses to issue a license or an oath, call Lambda or your own lawyer and raise some hell. But, what if the knuckle-dragger starts the licensing process — with contempt? Should you stay and suffer? Or should you walk away, find another city hall, another clerk, another day? The answer is not as clear today as it was before Justice Kennedy spoke. When our rights were neither clear nor dependable, you owed it to yourself and our gay and lesbian ancestors to stare down disdain, stand your ground and get that license. But, now, the most powerful ally is on our side — the United States Constitution. Your dignity owes it to no one to take a punch, certainly not from a bureaucrat using the power of the counter to ruin your day – after all, you’re a human, a taxpayer, an adult and a fiancé. Those of us who came before you brought an edge of defiance on an undercurrent of rage to our ceremonies. Today, it is so ordered that you can feel the same jitters and excitement and doubts as every other bride or groom without the political angst. You’re like everyone else — you can take, leave or complain about bad customer service, because now that’s all it is.

Mazel Tov and Happy Pride!

Ron Diamond’s Animation Show of Shows Coming to Comic-Con, Getting Ready for Nationwide Debut

Toon fans rejoice! The Animation Show of Shows will soon be coming to a theater near you.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter, this animation industry favorite will now transition from being an insider-only exclusive to becoming a program that film fans around the world can participate in and enjoy.

2015-07-02-1435865026-7316782-Diamond2.jpg

For those of you who don’t know: The Animation Show of Shows has long been Ron Diamond‘s baby. For the past 16 years, this veteran animation producer has circled the globe seeking out the very best new animated short films. Which sounds like it might be a fun way for a cinema fan to spend their time, but is actually a quite challenging task.

“Just recently, I sat through a screening of over 200 student films. All because I was looking for those one or two short animated films that I might consider adding to the line-up on my next Animation Show of Shows,” Ron explained during a recent phone interview.

And previously — once Diamond has selected all of that year’s animated gems — he’d then truck this feature-length compilation to animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Blue Sky. All with the hope that — by exposing these creatives to what the next generation of animators was up to — he’d then inspire these folks to explore unexpected ideas.”

2015-07-02-1435865079-1292332-Diamond3.jpg

“And while I don’t mean to brag, I think that I’ve got a pretty good eye for this stuff. 29 of the films that I’ve showcased in previous Animation Show of Shows have gone on to get Academy Award nominations. And 9 of those animated short films then went on to win the Oscar,” Ron continued.

But after 16 years of annually assembling this great collection of animated short films which was then meant to educate and inspire industry insiders, Diamond was looking to broaden his horizons. He wanted the general public to now be able to get in on the fun. Which is why Ron set up a not-for-profit organization that would then make it possible to The Animation Show of Shows to expand its mission.

“After all, it’s one thing to show these new animated short films to industry insiders who then might have some knowledge of who these fledgling filmmakers are, the reputations of their teachers and/or their independent work. And it’s an entirely different thing to show these great new animated short films to an audience that’s going in cold. That has absolutely no context when it comes to who these filmmakers are and where the ideas for each of these new animated shorts may have come from,” Diamond stated.

2015-07-02-1435865118-6502741-Diamond1.jpg

That was what really drove Ron to get a Kickstarter campaign going for the Animation Show of Shows. If he was going to transform this showcase of new animated short films into something that members of the general film-going public could genuinely understand and appreciate … Well, that then meant that Diamond would have to craft profiles of the talented individuals who had created these animated short films. And given that Ron prides himself on always putting together a program that represents what is going on internationally in animation that year, that then meant Diamond was going to need to send film crews around the globe to create these contextual pieces that would profile that year’s top animators.

Thanks to the generous pledges of the people who supported Ron’s vision for a more ambitious, broader reaching Animation Show of Shows, those profiles will now be included in Diamond’s next feature-length compilation of the finest animated shorts from around the world. Not only that, but Ron will be using these funds to expand into the field of restoration. Singling out great animated short films from the past that need to be preserved and shared.

By the way, if you’re headed to San Diego next week for the 2015 edition of Comic-Con and want to get a sense of the sort of show that Ron Diamond plans on presenting very soon at a theater near you, the 16th Annual Animation Show of Shows will be presented in Hall H on Friday, July 10th from 10 – 11:30 a.m. Hopefully — as part of the Q & A session that’s supposed to follow this presentation — Diamond will then discuss his plans for this award-winning series of animated short films.

Getting Your Photography Published 2.0

2015-06-19-1434744626-4798858-MSConeyIsland.jpg

Firstly, let me say that I have written about this topic before – hence the 2.0. Regardless, it is still the number one question I get asked, “How did you publish your photography? What can I do to get my work published?” There no simple answer to these questions. However, there are a number of things you can do, and a few things you shouldn’t do, that are worth pointing out.

Do you have a project worth publishing? This is perhaps the most important first step. Answer this question not only with honesty, but with the input of others, ideally a professional editor. You would be surprised at the number of “press-ready” projects I see that are, if anything, absolutely not ready for publication. Publishing a book of photography has to be more than merely making a photo album and then sending it out into the world. The narrative needs to be tight, there needs to be a story. You also need to make sure the work is well edited. If your project contains two hundred images, you should aim to publish around fifty or sixty, not the entire two hundred. Photographers often drown out their good work in a sea of “okay” work. This is a very common mistake. Be selective and edit without mercy, then, do it again! Also, like I said, seek help. Portfolio reviews are one of the best ways to do this. Many photographers, including myself, offer portfolio reviews for peers and friends. It’s not me saying I know more than you, it’s me saying as a fellow photographer – a peer – allow me to review you work and provide you with a sober second opinion. Shelve the ego from the very beginning or you will never make it to press!

Next, I highly recommend making a mockup book. Use a self-publishing service like Blurb or Lulu and make a book which represents, as closely as possible, what it is that you want the actual publisher to produce. Publishers will be able to actually see what you are proposing, rather than simply a pile of photos. This process may also help you to see what it is you have and whether or not you feel it is the right moment to press ahead with the work.

Consider your proposal from an outsiders point of view. Are you known as a photographer? If not, what makes you feel your work would be of interest to anyone, especially at a cost? Publishers are not into stroking egos, so you will have to find something about your work which is unique and attractive from a business point of view. Remember, presses, even small ones, are in for a profit. Even “nonprofit” presses frown upon publishing books which are nothing more than a colossal expense. If you’ve never been published in magazines, or exhibited in galleries, chances are your project will be a hard sell to a traditional publisher. Rather than chasing this impossible dream, I recommend spending more time entering contests and submitting to magazines and galleries to try and build a better resume prior to approaching a book-length project. There are also other alternatives too.

Artist books are a great alternative. That is, produce the book yourself. Self-publishing is not to be discounted. It’s true that there is still some stigma attached to this route in the literary word, but that is not the case with art and photography. Photographers have been publishing their own work from the very beginning. Famous photographers like Martin Parr have been at this for decades with great success. Because the books are more objets d’art, and less books, they usually accumulate higher value. Some of Parr’s out-of-print books sell for hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Because you are in control, and are usually producing in small numbers, you can produce books which are of a higher quality. Milk Books is a great service for this option. Produce in a limited number and hand-sign and number your books. This method has often been more successful and profitable for many photographers anyway.

Whatever you do, don’t simply mass mail your book project out to every press you can find on the internet. This is a waste of time, money (in the case of mockups) and you will likely also annoy editors and publishers, who will not be so quick to forget your name. Be careful, your career will hopefully be long and successful. Just because Taschen doesn’t want to publish your book today, doesn’t mean they won’t want it a decade later. As is the case with everyone, they save databases of correspondence, if you tell them off now, you may regret it later on. Be smart. Submit appropriate mockups that are truly ready for publication to selective presses. If you get several rejections this is not an indication that presses are evil and you should teach them a nasty lesson in a hastily written email, it is rather an indication that likely your work is not ready for book form.

2015-06-19-1434747259-4559855-HumanFragment.jpg

I asked my own publisher to weigh in with his thoughts on this process. Here’s what Joe Pan, publisher at Brooklyn Arts Press, had to say:

“Style in photography is elusive, meaning it’s incredibly difficult for a photographer to develop a style that doesn’t come off as a direct emulation of a more well-established photographer. Plus, we’ve been overexposed to images our whole life, so finding true unique qualities in photography is rare. That said, when someone is capturing something in a way that works on a deeper level, it leaves you breathless. That’s the mark, when it hits you like the perfect haiku, bewilderment borne somehow from the common. You can deconstruct a photo a hundred ways, yet you can’t deconstruct so easily presence of mind, or the architecture of urgency, or a gaze’s natural empathy, each of which any person standing in front of a photograph for the first time can experience without being told what to expect. When looking over photography books for BAP, we look for these indescribable qualities made present. The biggest mistake, honestly, is people thinking they’re ready for a book when they aren’t. Or misunderstanding how images in close proximity are speaking to each other, or purposefully clashing, or aren’t speaking at all. In terms of what MUST be present: vision.”

Indeed, Joe has nailed it. Most projects are premature. Successful books of photography are almost always produced by photographers who have developed a distinct and recognizable style of photography. It also has to be somewhat innovative in approach, that is you don’t have to be unique, but no one is interested in publishing a Gilden copycat either. Be different. Take time to find out what that means in terms of your work. It took me many years of all kinds of approaches and techniques to develop my style. I only knew I was finally onto something when I began to see photographers copying me. Imitation being the highest form of flattery, right? It was still annoying, but it told me to press ahead as something was happening. I also received a lot of criticism, both positive and negative. That too indicates some degree of success. No one is interested in criticizing work that is pointless and irrelevant because it is unnoticed to begin with. No, people criticize work because it is coming up on the radar. As Andy Warhol used to say, “I measure criticism by the inch”.

Artist Chuck Close offers some good insight here too. He comments in the documentary, Smash His Camera that “photography is the easiest medium in which to become competent. Anybody can take a competent picture, but it’s the hardest medium in which to express some kind of personal vision. The fact that you can have something that is recognizable from 50 feet across the gallery, like an Arbus or a Penn, it means they really have done something.” Does your work have that recognizable quality that is your own? If not, maybe continue to work on your craft and style. If you do have this, perhaps it is time to look toward publication and getting that work into a permanent home.

So, you do in fact land a book deal. Great. Beware of the publishing process. You will not be in control, the publisher will. You may, especially if you work with a small press, have some input into cover image and title etc., but often times you will not. You must be ready to sacrifice your work to a compromise. You also need to be prepared to do a lot of leg work. Unless you are with Steidl, you will be the one doing most of the promotion and selling. This may even be formally stated in your contract. However, if it isn’t don’t think for a second that any press is going to be amused with your hands off artiste approach. If you don’t think you can sell your book, don’t publish it. Simple. Furthermore, realize that no books, especially today with democratic access to publishing, sell themselves. It just doesn’t happen. Publishing a book and calling it a day is like digging a hole and burying your photography. Think about all this stuff carefully. Perhaps you don’t even want a book!

Finally, one of the biggest things you can do to help get your book of photography published is to BUY PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS. I’m not talking about the classics either. Those books have already paid for themselves and the photographers, for the most part, are dead. I mean buy books by emerging artists, by your peers. If you’re not interested in buying a book of photography what makes you think anyone is going to run out to the Strand and buy yours? Photography should be about community and supporting one another in a way which, collectively, benefits everyone. If everybody is merely self-absorbed, jealous, and too cheap to buy a book, then nothing is going to happen for anyone. Game over.

Getting Unstuck : 3 Simple Ways to Get Back in the Groove

Has this ever happened to you?

You’re cruising. Business is good and the days fly by. You’re accomplishing a lot. In fact, getting stuff done is almost effortless! Life is satisfying and fulfilling.

You’re physically strong, energized and healthy. Your relationships are solid and secure. Life feels joyous. You’re happy and in the flow.

Then, all of a sudden, something happens and kapow! Everything comes to a screeching halt.

Maybe you get physically sick and can’t get out of bed for two weeks. Maybe you lose a major client and it sends you into a tailspin. But suddenly, you’re out of the flow. Now life feels hard.

Where did that energy, that desire, the vibrancy go?

From the vantage point of this new lackluster place, your former “productive” self feels like a dream.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because we can ALL relate.

Similar scenarios occur on and off throughout our lives in both small and huge ways. Maybe it’s a day of feeling off your game, maybe it’s six months.

I used to think, “when this issue is gone, it’ll be smooth sailing from here on out.” But then one day I realized, NO. Life is always providing challenges for us to overcome and some of those are curveballs.

The question is, how do we get back into the game?

Here are Three Ways I’ve Learned to Get Out of the Funk and Back in the Flow:

1. Stop Judging
Part of what happens when I slip out of my groove is that I judge myself. Suddenly I feel less productive, less energetic, and a lot more apathetic.

When I judge that place, and make it wrong, it becomes much harder to move through it. However, if I can accept and acknowledge what it is — just a moment rather than a weakness – I’m more easily able to step out of it.

2. Ease Back In
Think about yourself like a car. Very few can go from 0 to 60 mph instantaneously. We have to regain that speed over time. Ask yourself, what’s the first thing I can do to resume my regular schedule?

If you typically run two miles a day, can you start with one or perhaps even a half a mile?

If you normally make 20 calls a day, how about starting with five or maybe even ten?

3. Recognize It For What It Is: Temporary
What we’re experiencing is simply a reset. All of us want to be going strong 24/7 but the reality is we can’t. Sometimes we need breaks.

So ask yourself, What does self-care look like?

Is it a late evening walk, a relaxing bath, a quiet chat, uplifting music?

Incorporate self-care and small ways to relax into your regular life. By scheduling these, you’ll likely be able to maintain your groove longer and more easily without getting blindsided.

And even when you do need a timeout — remember that it’s temporary and necessary.

Life is full of ups and downs. It’s just that most of us like the ups more than the downs. But when we remember that it’s all part of the journey, we can accept those down times and embrace them for what they are — a reminder to go slower, a reset or some time to stop and think.

When you find yourself in a down cycle, be gentle and see if incorporating more self-care will enable you to move through them a bit more quickly. Most importantly, remember that what you’re feeling is what we all feel and is part of the human experience.

10 Tools to Help You Give Without Getting Drained

In our society, where we have a tendency to constantly be in a state of “go go go” it can be a real challenge to find the energy to give anymore without feeling stressed, tired, exhausted and just flat out, well, drained.

Maybe it’s after a long day of work and you find yourself getting a call from a family member with another problem and you just don’t have the energy to deal with it. Or maybe it’s struggling to have patience with that one difficult customer.

Regardless of the exact scenario, these situations can all be really challenging. If we don’t take time out of our day to really tune into ourselves and give ourselves some good ol’ self-care, we can find ourselves in this constant place of being drained and stressed out. And frankly, that’s not good for you or anyone around you.

So here are 10 simple tools that can help you give without feeling drained:

1. Spend time in nature. Go out and soak up some sun, breathe in the fresh air, walk barefoot in the grass, and marvel in the blissful sound of birds chirping.

2. Exercise! When we strengthen our bodies, we also strengthen our entire being. So go for a run, do some yoga, or hit up the gym.

3. Eat well. Are you finding yourself always in a hurry and rushing over to McDonald’s? Well if you really want to replenish yourself so you’re not drained and stressed out all the time, then find some alternative foods to eat that are much nutritious for you. Eat some fruit and veggies. Have a salad. Maybe even try out going paleo, vegan or gluten free. Find food that energizes you and makes you feel like you’re at your optimal health.

4. Get enough sleep. One of the most important factors of our mental health and overall well-being is the amount and quality of sleep we get each night. After all, our brains can’t function optimally if we don’t give it a chance to rest! The general rule of thumb is to shoot for somewhere between 7 to 9 hours each night, depending on what your body needs.

5. Support yourself. We can’t really support others, nor can we fully receive support from others, if we don’t support ourselves. So support yourself in the work you do by praising yourself for a job well done, rather than be super critical about it not being “good enough.” Support yourself in relationships by being in relationships with people who are kind, loyal, and respectful of you.

6. Meditate — often. Enough said.

7. Breathe! When we’re stressed and worn out, we habitually forget to breathe. So bring everything back to the breath and do it often! Take deep breaths and then let it all out.

8. Do things that light you up. Be sure that you’re taking time each week (or even day) to do things that you really truly enjoy doing. Do what you feel passionate about. Take time to write, take photos, grow a garden, take your dog for a walk, dance… do whatever helps bring more fun to your life and energizes you.

9. Bring passion into what you do. While it is important to do things that you already feel passionate about, it’s also important to put forth the effort to bring passion into what you do already. Bring passion into regular exercise routine, bring passion into your not-quite-dream-job, and bring passion into your new diet. When we bring passion into all aspects of our life, we can then find ourselves much happier — which supplies us with plenty of joy and love to share with others.

10. Give yourself some alone time. While it can be easy with our busy lives to always be socializing and doing things with others, it is also important to give yourself some “me” time to do whatever with yourself. Take some time to yourself to journal, read, or reflect on your day. Take some time to go someplace by yourself so you have space to deal completely with your own thoughts, emotions, and overall experience. Allow yourself to take some moments to stop and look within — for it is within that our endless supply of love dwells.

Getting to Maybe

Getting to Maybe

A practical, inspirational, revolutionary guide to social innovationMany of us have a deep desire to make the world around us a better place. But often our good intentions are undermined by the fear that we are so insignificant in the big scheme of things that nothing we can do will actually help feed the world’s hungry, fix the damage of a Hurricane Katrina or even get a healthy lunch program up and running in the local school. We tend to think that great social change is the province of heroes – an intimidating view of reality that keeps ordinary people on the couch. But extraordinary leaders such as Gandhi and even unlikely social activists such as Bob Geldof most often see themselves as harnessing the forces around them, rather than singlehandedly setting those forces in motion. The trick in any great social project – from the global fight against AIDS to working to eradicate poverty in a single Canadian city – is to stop looking at the discrete elements and start trying to understand the complex relationships between them. By studying fascinating real-life examples of social change through this systems-and-relationships lens, the authors of Getting to Maybe tease out the rules of engagement between volunteers, leaders, organizations and circumstance – between individuals and what Shakespeare called “the tide in the affairs of men.”Getting to Maybe applies the insights of complexity theory and harvests the experiences of a wide range of people and organizations – including the ministers behind the Boston Miracle (and its aftermath); the Grameen Bank, in which one man’s dream of micro-credit sparked a financial revolution for the world’s poor; the efforts of a Canadian clothing designer to help transform the lives of aboriginal women and children; and many more – to lay out a brand new way of thinking about making change in communities, in business, and in the world. From the Hardcover edition.

Getting Married This Month? That’s What You Think

June is the traditional month for weddings. The weather is nice; not too, hot. School is over. Graduations have passed. White is in season. Daylight seems destined to last all night. The season vibrates with promise. It seems an auspicious time for making commitments about the future. Spring has dosed all of our senses with the promised rewards of love. At one time, as you may have heard, weddings were the condition precedent to obtaining the rewards of love. June it seems is the month for weddings because nature has filled it with swelling buds, shoots of tender new growth, a drenching haze of pollen, and the awakening of bees to collect it.

So you may be having a wedding this month, and if so, you have my sincere wishes for a perfect day and the spouse of your dreams. But, don’t think for a minute that just because you’ve had the wedding ceremony, the champagne and cake, that now, lo and behold, “by the powers vested in me,” etc., you are “married”. Not by a long shot.

Marriage isn’t an event, it’s an achievement. You have to work at it. It takes years, typically many years to become truly married. The best description I’ve found comes out of the old, tobacco growing, south. Cigar makers blend different varieties of tobacco, each with its own traits and characteristics. Then they would then pair and roll the different varieties of leaves together and stack them on racks in a special room called a “marrying room“. There the tobacco would be left to age and mellow. Over time, thanks to the skills of the blender, the undesirable traits and characteristics of each variety would be mellowed, or overshadowed by the best traits and characteristics of the others. The result was the best of what each tobacco variety was capable of offering.

People are not tobacco. We’ve pretty much abandoned professional “blenders” for computer matching algorithms. The marrying process requires more time and much more effort and struggle, than for tobacco. We do not give up our rough edges, our egos and competitiveness nearly so readily as tobacco leaves. Mellowing for people usually requires that the rough edges be chipped off and filed smooth. It requires going through a process; determining what is truly important to our being who we are, and what only seems important because of our vanity, ego, and stubbornness. It requires installing a control valve on our deep well of oppositional defiance – the thing that makes us want to stay standing when someone says, “Sit down.” It requires recognizing, that our efforts at ‘correcting’ and ‘removing’ the flaws and short-comings of our spouse create more problems than they fix. It takes quietly giving up on ever ‘fixing’ anything about them, and at last truly accepting them and loving them, as they are – great, good, and bad. So marriage comes, not easily, but after all our efforts at making over our spouse have worn us down. Once the battling is exhausted, marriage still requires persistence, patience, and a great deal of acceptance and giving in.

These adjustments are not easy. They do not happen quickly. But the result – the peace, the depth of love that transcends feeble passions, the merger, the dance, the song of two souls, makes the struggle and the years seem insignificant. The result may be bold and fiery, or placid and cool, but this is what it takes to become ‘married’. It will pay great dividends in the long run. This is the first generation in history that can access help and a head start before the wedding by putting some time and effort into collaboratively planning life after the wedding. There are collaborative marriage planning teams out there that can help. But, with or without professional guidance in the process, you should practice working collaboratively with your spouse-to-be. You will need a vision for where you want to get once you are wed, a plan for how to get there, and a picture of how your partnership is going to work once the honeymoon is past and “real life” takes over. Then as you walk down the aisle, you can have confidence that you’re prepared for the long, and challenging journey you are embarking upon; you will have a valuable head start toward – ‘marriage’. Your wedding is the embarkation point for your life’s journey and marriage. Bon Voyage.

It Took Getting Engaged For Me To Learn The Truth About Marriage Proposals

2015-05-15-1431713785-1163422-whatgettingengagedtaughtmeabout2.png

Few people get to spend their workdays watching heartfelt proposal videos all day, and I count myself lucky to be one of them. As the Senior Editor of HuffPost Weddings, I also read tons of meet-cute stories, attend bridal fashion shows and scroll through hundreds of gorgeous wedding photos. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

When I first started doing this job two years ago, every flash mob, Jumbotron and writing-in-the-sky marriage proposal could bring me to tears. This is the best proposal ever, I thought again and again. How perfectly suited this Bruno Mars song is to marriage proposals! We featured flash mob after flash mob after flash mob. We — and our audience — couldn’t get enough.

Now, as Associate Editor Kelsey Borresen and I joke, it takes a lot to impress us. Run-of-the-mill flash mobs usually result in eye rolls. And don’t even get me started on the latest wave of fake arrest marriage proposals (who wants to be scared to death before one of the happiest moments of your life? No one).

When a staff writer from another department pitches a proposal video, they’ll often tell me it’s the “best marriage proposal ever.” Their copy exudes a lovely naiveté, the writing filled with over-the-top adjectives and pronouncements. I’m not really a fan of calling anything “the best ever.” Certainly there is something out there that is even bigger, better, more meaningful and over the top. Why put all our eggs in one Tiffany blue box — err, basket?

But after my boyfriend of 10 years (hey, I edit HuffPost Divorce too) popped the question recently, it became clear that, in fact, my proposal was the best proposal. He did it in a completely surprising way — on a Friday morning before I had left for the office, during a routine workday task. It was the last story idea in Kelsey’s morning pitch e-mail: High school sweetheart proposes to long-time girlfriend. I clicked and found out that the proposal was mine.

What followed (after the initial crying, tackling him to the floor and calling everyone I know) was a full day of surprises including lunch at our first date spot, dinner with our families (with a surprise visit from my sister, who flew in from Arizona), and a surprise party at my parents’ house with all my closest friends. It was perfect. And everyone I told about my proposal agreed.

In the week after we got engaged, I joked with colleagues that I was going to write a story called “10 Signs My Marriage Proposal Was The Best Proposal Ever” (that, or “Proof That My Marriage Proposal Was The Best Proposal”). What I realized in recounting the story again and again was that my proposal was the best proposal because it was just that — my proposal. My boyfriend — err, fiancé (still getting used to that!) — could have asked me to marry him in any number of ways and all of those ways would have been perfect because he is the perfect person for me, and me for him.

So go ahead — plan an elaborate flash mob, a scavenger hunt or simply roll over in bed and say, “Hey, wanna make this official?” Your marriage proposal will be the best proposal ever because it’s yours. And I promise, no more eye-rolling from me.

Getting ‘The Bird’ From a Bird

Filming with animals can be a lot more complicated than filming with people and it takes a lot more preparation than one might think. One wants it to go well, so one can never be prepared enough. One example of how filming with animals can be complex is the following story:

I shot a western in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a great deal of fun. I would get up early and watch the wranglers herd the cattle to their pens. I would have breakfast with real cowboys and eat fresh tamales along the banks of the Rio Grande. Some of our locations could only be accessed on horseback. We utilized stagecoaches and buckboards. We hired many of the enthusiastic local residents and dressed them in western garb.

One shot required the services of a trained hawk. The hawk was to swoop low over the outlaws as a symbolic image of impending retribution. Out came a man with a trained hawk. It stood on his wrist, its head covered by a cloth hood while it awaited instructions.

The guy never stopped bragging about how well the bird was trained, how faithful it was to him and how obedient to his every whim and will.

“It will fly when I tell it to and swoop when I signal. It will fly in a straight line and come back upon my command,” and on and on and on.

Came the moment. The trainer removed the hawk’s hood. The bird straightened up in preparation for flight. It trained its laser-like gaze on some distant object. The director barked “action” and the trainer made a signal with his arm. Off went the bird… and went, and went, and went.

“Make it swoop,” ordered the director. The man made an arm signal. About 200 yards out, the bird looked back over its shoulder and must have said to itself what they say when someone hits a home run in Yankee Stadium, “See ya!”

Have you seen this bird? “Cause I sure as heck haven’t and neither has anyone else.

The last I saw of its trainer, he was standing in a field of daisies mumbling: “But the bird loves me. It spirals when I signal and swoops when I call. And it always comes back.”

To which I say… “uh huh.”

Here is another example of a film depicting an animal:

You can’t ask too many questions… you can only ask too few.

A young woman sat in the first row at one of my many safety seminars. I do 18 safety seminars a year. I was just finishing my speech about our close relationship with the American Humane, when she raised her hand.

“If I have my own horse, can I use it in my film?”

Easy enough question, you would say. But this is a film student. Ever hear the expression “two people separated by a common language?”

Or, better yet, “the devil is in the details.”

“What will your horse do,” I asked?
“It will be coming into the barn,” she replied.
“Will an actor be riding it,” I queried?
“Yes,” she readily admitted.

“Okay,” I said. “What you will need to do is contact American Humane and get the name and number of a reputable horse trainer. Work with him or her and your actor until both the horse and the performer are comfortable with one another.”

She dutifully jotted down what I said and assured me she would do as I suggested. I continued on with the seminar.

Six weeks passed.

One day she strode into my office and asked: “Remember me?”
“Yes,” I said. “The horse-in-the-barn lady.”
“Right. And I’m ready to shoot.”

We went over the requirements for filming with animals and she had done everything I had asked her to do. We were all set to go.

And then, out of sheer dumb luck, or maybe an instinct developed over a thousand conversations with film students, I asked: “How does the horse actually enter the barn?” I simply meant, did it walk, did it trot, or did it gallop?

She said, “Oh… it crashes through the window.”

Yikes… gulp…

She had seen the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, True Lies, and been inspired by a scene in which Schwarzenegger rode a horse into a glass elevator on the side of the hotel. Unfortunately for her, her budget and timeframe was considerably shorter than that of James Cameron who directed the film.

I explained the complexities of training a horse, any horse, to jump through wood and glass, even breakaway wood and candy glass. She had also never bothered to mention her plans to the owner of the barn, nor explain, nor account for “scoring” the wall to break, be replaced and busted again. The term “scoring” in this context, as opposed to scoring the music for a film, means pre-cutting something so it will give on a small amount of contact. She had neither the time nor the money to accomplish her surprisingly complex vision. And apparently her communication skills were of a somewhat limited nature as well.

I am reasonably sure, somewhere out there in Southern California, there is a barn owner, a stuntman, an animal trainer, a carpenter and an actor who is happy I asked that last question.

Somewhere, out there in Southern California, I am positive, there is a horse that is glad I asked that last question.

You can’t ask too many questions… you can only ask too few.

Peyton Manning Made An Unfunny Joke About Getting ‘Hit In The Head A Lot’ Last Night

During the opening monologue of the 40th anniversary episode of “Saturday Night Live” on Sunday, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning made a joke about the brutal hits to the head professional football players deal with during almost every game.

“I gotta say I was so flattered backstage when you said I had a natural gift for athletics,” Steve Martin jokingly told Manning on stage.

“Steve, I get hit in the head a lot,” Manning replied. “I get hit in the head a lot.”

Manning’s joke occurs around 4:30 in the video above.

It’s likely an “SNL” writer, and not Manning himself, who wrote the joke, but it’s nevertheless of questionable taste. The NFL reported last month that its players registered 111 concussions during the 2014 regular season. That number is down from previous years, but it’s still far from zero, and PBS’s “Frontline,” which kept a concussion tracker throughout the season, says there were actually at least 12 more than that.

Quarterbacks actually registered fewer concussions than almost every other position, according to the “Frontline” concussion tracker. But that doesn’t mean they are immune to the brain trauma that can occur on the field. Cullen Finnerty, once a star college quarterback, was found to have the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after he was found dead in 2013.

And just last week, former San Diego Chargers quarterback Jesse Freitas was found dead in a parked car. Authorities have said there were no initial signs of foul play. Freitas had been struggling with mental illness during retirement, and his family decided to have Freitas’ brain checked for signs of trauma.

“Frontline” reported last year that 76 of 79 former NFL players who posthumously donated their brains to the Department of Veterans Affairs brain repository showed signs of traumatic brain injury.

A ‘Minority Report’ TV Show Is Getting A Pilot On Fox

If you’re a fan of the Philip K. Dick short story, the Steven Spielberg film adaptation or of sci-fi in general, we have good news: “Minority Report” is coming to the small screen.

A TV adaptation of Spielberg’s 2002 film has been one of the most buzzed about projects for months, and now Fox has given it a pilot order. The drama will be a follow-up to the film, which starred Tom Cruise as a cop who stops crime before it happens using psychic Precogs. Set 10 years after Precrime is over in Washington, D.C., it will follow a female detective and a Precog who has trouble leading a “normal” life while still suffering from visions of the future.

The pilot, which has yet to be cast, was written by Max Borenstein (“Godzilla”), who will also executive produce along with Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Kevin Falls (“The West Wing”) will serve as showrunner.

The Over-It Girl’s Guide to Getting Better Oral Sex

Getting Schooled

In recent years, the American education system’s efforts to “teach to the test” or insist on a “common core” approach to curriculum have been met with hostility from parents and teachers alike. While classroom instructors have frequently been demonized as lazy, ineffectual, and presumably overpaid babysitters (who are often charged with the responsibility of educating obnoxious, obstreperous, and outsourced offspring), few critics have ever dealt with the reality of standing in front of a classroom for a protracted period of time. It ain’t easy.

In his recent article on The Huffington Post, Peter Greene delivered a brutal reality check on what it’s like to have one’s professional life tyrannized by Teacher Time. With all of the pressures that fall on a teacher’s shoulders, it should come as no surprise that no two teachers are exactly alike.

  • Some are beautiful, others look beastly.
  • Some befriend their students, others berate them.
  • Some are merely bland, others are downright boring.
  • Some are benign, others tend toward bombastic and bellicose behavior.

In an idealized situation (where all expenses are borne by the royal court and the king’s wives and concubines are on hand to act as teacher’s aides), an educator need not worry about class size or concealed weapons. In the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I, a teacher could delight in the simple joy of being taught by her pupils.

Students are often far more perceptive than school administrators might like to believe (anyone who has worked as a substitute teacher can offer up their fair share of horror stories). However, because of a teacher’s unique position as a role model (and, hopefully, an inspiration), a good teacher can light a fire under a student’s intellect which will help that child view life as a grand adventure rather than a quest for vengeance.

When teachers are graded on their performance, there is rarely enough time to assess the out-of-classroom impact they might have on students as a result of such intangible qualities as personality, patience, tone of voice, and willingness to listen.

When the term “special ed” enters the conversation, many assume it refers to the learning challenges faced by developmentally disabled students. They rarely stop to consider the plight of teachers who might be struggling with a unique constellation of challenges in their personal lives.

Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu is one such teacher. Educated at Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawai’i, she is currently the Cultural Director at Halau Lokahi (a public charter school dedicated to using Native Hawaiian culture, history, and education as tools for developing and empowering the next generation of warrior scholars).

The protagonist of an extremely moving documentary that was shown at the 2014 Frameline Film Festival, she is also a founding member of — and outreach specialist for — Kulia Na Mamo, a community organization established to improve the quality of life for mahu wahine (transgender women). In Kumu Hina, filmmakers Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson focus their attention on this unique dance teacher as she shares her strength and wisdom with her students. As the film’s creative team explains:

Kumu Hina is a different type of film that has its roots in pre-contact Polynesian culture. Like many ancient civilizations, the original Hawaiians regarded those who displayed both male and female characteristics as gifted and special. They called these people mahu and valued and respected them as caretakers of family and guardians of culture. Mahu were also admired for their healing skills; according to legend, mahu soothsayers brought their healing mana, or spirit, to Hawai’i from Tahiti many centuries ago, a visit commemorated by the healing stones of Kapaemahu, four basalt boulders located on Waikiki Beach. This documentary portrays a world where instead of transgender people being marginalized because of who they are, they are actually visible, included and honored. A world where youth who are searching for their own creative forms of gender expression are embraced and encouraged to be themselves rather than to hide in fear or pretend they are just like everyone else.”

Some of Hina’s male high school students may seem lazy or uninspired as they prepare for their school’s end-of-year hula performance. The notable exception is the tomboyish Ho’onani, a spunky sixth-grader with an abundance of kû (male energy), who insists on joining the boys. Her potential to mature and become a mahu (a community leader with the power to heal and teach) is impossible to ignore.

Having lived the reality of being a little boy who grew up to be the woman of his dreams, Hina is determined to make sure that a young girl can rise to become a leader among men. Helping Ho’onani understand that there is a place for all “in the middle” is only one of Hina’s challenges.

Keeping the culture of Pacific Islanders and their values alive in modern Hawaii is easier said than done in an increasingly Westernized society. Hina is a respected cultural guardian who is involved with affairs of Hawaii’s state government. Traditional Hawaiian values have suffered throughout 200 years of colonization, violence, and religious oppression by Mormon missionaries.

Hina was appointed by Hawaii’s governor to the O’ahu Island Burial Council, which oversees the management of native Hawaiian burial sites and ancestral remains. Her task was to investigate whether railroad construction on Oahu had disturbed traditional Hawaiian graves. In the following video, she can be seen on November 13, 2013, offering the opening oli (chant) at the ceremony when Hawaii’s Governor, Neil Abercrombie, signed the Hawaii Marriage Equality Act of 2013 into law.

In their Directors’ Statement, Hamer and Wilson recall that:

“We met Hinaleimoana in early 2011 and were immediately captivated by her presence. Physically large, and covered in striking tattoos, she is easily identifiable to most as a transgender Polynesian woman. But rather than being cast as an outsider (as would likely be the case if we were in the continental United States or most other places), Hina is an important and respected person in her home town of Honolulu and throughout Hawai’i. When out on the streets of Honolulu, people call out and wave to their Kumu, or teacher, Hina (as she is affectionately known), respecting her for the leadership she provides in educating their children and for being a steadfastly Hawaiian voice on important issues of the day.”

“What most compelled us to grab our cameras and begin to follow Hina as the central character of a new film was her brief mention of an upcoming trip to Fiji to pick up her Tongan husband [Haemaccelo Kalu, from Niuafo’ou Island in the Kingdom of Tonga], a man she had married a year earlier but had to leave waiting while she returned to Hawai’i to get his immigration papers in order. We imagined that the trials and tribulations of this unusual Pacific Islander couple navigating the most universal terrain of the human experience (romantic love and marriage) would be fascinating, entertaining, revelatory.”

Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu relaxes with her husband, Haemaccelo

Hina’s patience while trying to handle her responsibilities as a cultural leader is frequently challenged by her younger husband, who will call her on the phone when he misses a bus and doesn’t know how else to get to his job. Although Haemaccelo has no problems with the fact that Hina is transgender, he is subject to intense moments of jealousy when she is enjoying the companionship of her male friends or other transgenders. While Hina works to share native Hawaiian values which stress unconditional love and respect for all, sometimes her husband’s petulance can really get on her nerves.

Kumu Hina offers fascinating insights into the challenges of teaching one’s native culture in a contemporary charter school (in 2014, Hina announced her bid for a position on the board of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, making her the first transgender candidate to run for statewide political office in the United States).

Hina and her husband granted the filmmakers a rare level of access in recording their moments together. As a result, Kumu Hina is an especially intimate documentary wherein the personal becomes political and the political is most definitely personal. Here’s the trailer:

While Hina and her husband see themselves as “two people who just want someone to care for, and love us, someone to accept us, and someone to give us the aloha that we seek,” George Bernard Shaw left no doubt that Henry Higgins saw himself as “a confirmed old bachelor and likely to remain so!” A curmudgeon to the core, the notorious phonetics professor was a lot more abrasive in Shaw’s original script for Pygmalion than in the beloved 1956 musical adaptation known to one and all as My Fair Lady.

Shaw wrote Pygmalion in 1912 (the same year that the sinking of the RMS Titanic brought Great Britain’s strict class society into sharp focus). In the original script, Mrs. Eynsford Hill beseeches Mrs. Higgins to keep inviting her son Freddy to the garden parties at Mrs. Higgins’s home. Why? Because the family is poor enough that Mrs. Eynsford Hill sees no hope for her daughter, Clara, but feels that the incompetent and fairly useless Freddy at least deserves a chance at happiness.

Directed with a grand sense of sass by Jonathan Moscone, Pygmalion (which opened in London on April 11, 1914) turns out to be remarkably timely more than 100 years after its English premiere. In a world being wrenched apart by income inequality, Alfred Doolittle’s description of himself as “one of the undeserving poor” seems to have become the mantra for misguided Republicans like Congressman Paul Ryan.

Because the harder edges of Shaw’s social criticism were softened for the musical, theatregoers who attended the California Shakespeare Theater’s raucous production of Pygmalion might have been shocked to hear Professor Higgins call Eliza (Irene Lucio) a slut during one of his ill-mannered temper tantrums. Any questions about the origins of the current “war on women” can be traced to Higgins’s pompous misogyny (especially his vicious outbursts whenever Eliza pushes back against his preening self-absorption and genuine assholery).

In truth, Eliza is a hard-working young woman constantly alert to any opportunity which might help her escape her social class. More than ever, the words of Mrs. Pearce (Catherine Castellanos) — who chastises her employer for his insufferable behavior — and Mrs. Higgins (Sharon Lockwood), who accuses both her esteemed son and Colonel Pickering (Peter L. Callender) of acting like two little boys playing with their newfound toy, lay the foundation for Eliza’s transformation from a scruffy Cockney flower girl with little hope of a future into a genuine feminist threat — an educated and self-determined woman who sees a path to economic freedom for herself that will never again force her to rely on the vicissitudes of vain and foolish men. Carpe diem, indeed!

The CalShakes production played out on a unit set designed by Annie Smart which was brightened by Anna Oliver’s period costumes for Shaw’s women. Casting was rock solid, with Anthony Fusco seemingly born to play Higgins as an arrogant sexist pig bereft of any civil graces. While James Carpenter nearly stole the show as Eliza’s father, Alfred P. Doolittle, Nicholas Pelczar delivered one of the best portrayals of Freddy Eynsford Hill I’ve ever seen (as a clumsy young member of the upper class enthralled with the raw vitality of Eliza’s presence and her thrilling use of street vernacular).

There was a very interesting shift in the play’s power dynamics and collective wisdom as Mrs. Pearce, Mrs. Higgins, Mrs. Eynsford Hill, and Eliza continued to pay careful attention to human nature and psychological detail with a basic level of understanding that, as men of position and privilege, neither Higgins nor Pickering could ever master. Eliza’s final triumph over Higgins left him deflated, helpless, and at a loss to comprehend why she would not want to return to a subservient lifestyle “for the sheer fun of it.”

Even Some Humanitarian Hounds Are Getting In On The Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALS ice bucket challenge has taken the world by storm as people have dumped buckets of ice over their heads for an important cause. (To date it has raised more than $ 100 million for the ALS Association.) Most recently though, the challenge has caught on with some adorable members of another species.

Watch these hilarious (and dog-safe!) spins below — perhaps you’ll even be inspired to get your own furry friend involved.

We love this for two reasons: 1. Ammo the dachshund has a shower cap on. A SHOWER CAP! 2. The owner uses warm water on Ammo, making the challenge completely dog-safe, and a whole lot more pleasant.

An ice bucket challenge in which doggie treats come out of the bucket? No wonder these pooches were completely thrilled to be “splashed!”

Ya know, just another heroic day in the life of this police pooch.

By now, you’re probably familiar with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, because of this viral challenge, but did you know that dogs can be affected by a similar condition?

Degenerative myelopathy (DM) affects canines in a similar way ALS affects humans. DM is a progressive spinal-cord disorder that starts out causing weakness in the hind legs, and may eventually lead to paralysis of the dog’s entire back end within six months to a year, according to the GA Veterinary Rehabilitation, Fitness & Pain Management clinic. There is currently no cure for DM.

Help support ALS research through the “Donate” button above. And learn more about DM here.

Are You Getting Your Purpose and Your Process Mixed Up?

Figuring out your life’s purpose — what you came here to Planet Earth to do — is a massively scary undertaking. In fact, it can turn even the most headstrong entrepreneur into a quivering, commitment-phobic mess.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

You see, we’ve been looking at this purpose thing all wrong. We’ve been defining it too narrowly. We’re forcing ourselves to fit into a neat, little box and thinking that that’s where we’re supposed to stay for the rest of our lives.

But that ain’t the case.

The reason for all this confusion and angst is that we’re getting our purpose and our process confused.

So what is ‘purpose’?

Your purpose is the BIG HAIRY thing that you want to accomplish in your lifetime. It’s the change you want to effect in the world. When you’re old and grey and reminiscing on the years gone by, it’s the thing you want to be able to say ‘WOW, I did that’.

Your purpose is broad enough to take you in different directions.

It’s got enough scope that you can achieve it in a number of different ways.

And it’s expansive enough that it can be reinterpreted and reimagined at different stages of your life.

But it’s so, so connected and engrained in your being that once you’ve tuned in to its siren song, it will always be your guiding light.

Which is different to your ‘process’…

Your processes are the things you do to follow through on your purpose. The things you do to bring it to life. So for us heart-fuelled entrepreneurial gals, that means our businesses.

There are many, many different processes you can use to bring your purpose into form. And that’s where we get tripped up.

We think that being a life coach or a doctor is our purpose, but it’s not. That’s simply the way we’re fulfilling our purpose.

Both a doctor and a life coach could have the same purpose: to heal others and help them on their journey. Or they could have very different purposes: to inspire others to live their dream life (coach) and to educate others about their physical beings (doctors).

The key takeaway is that each of these professions is just one path to the overall end goal. Once you discover your greater vision, the options for how you bring this purpose to fruition are endless.

My own journey

It’s true what they say — life doesn’t unfold in a straight line. My journey has been a squiggly one, sometimes with full-blown loop-de-loops. Yet, with the benefit of hindsight, I know that everything I’ve done has been a manifestation of my purpose. It just took me a while to figure this out.

Firstly, I studied marketing, media and communications in my business degree. I wanted to help companies achieve their goals. Then I went on to study event operations, convinced I wanted to help businesses create mind-blowing experiences for their customers. Then I sidestepped and started studying speech pathology, because I wanted to help people communicate. And meanwhile, I’d also started a blog to help guide people on their spiritual journey.

Talk about a melting pot of processes! It wasn’t until I finally sat down to plan out this year’s big business goals that I finally saw through this hodge-podge of passions and realized what my underlying purpose was: To help raise the vibrations of the world.

Connecting the dots and having this massive ‘aha’ moment filled me with relief. My endless career chopping-and-changing wasn’t because I was flaky and indecisive; it was just that I was trying to find the best way to align with my true purpose.

So as I planned my next business move, instead of being filled with angst over where I wanted to be in 10 years time and trying to figure out my life-long career, I was able to focus on just one question:

How was I going to fulfill my purpose right now?

Phew! What a relief to realize that I didn’t have to waste time trying to guess what Future Me wants to do! Because I sure as hell don’t know the answer to that question.

But I can definitely answer it for me, right here, right now.

I want to fulfill my purpose by helping female entrepreneurs create real and viable businesses doing what they love. And I want to do it through coaching, consulting and kick-ass information products.

Cue the fireworks and champagne corks!

It’s the perfect combination of everything that’s led me to this point — my experience, my education, my passions, my interests. And best of all, it lights me up. In an incandescent, chest-swelling, heart-thumping kinda way.

I knew I was on to something big.

But…

It might not be what I do forever.

Hell, it might not even be what I do next year. I know that this is just one permutation of my overall mission, and although I’m loving it right now, I also know that it will grow and change and evolve into the next wave of delivering this vision.

It’s not the be all and end all, it’s just one manifestation of what I’m here to do.

Maybe it will morph into something bigger — perhaps an ecourse, or a book, or a full-blown bricks-and-mortar center? I don’t know yet. But that’s cool because I know that right now, I’m living on purpose.

And figuring that out has changed everything.

So tell me, what’s your purpose? And what process are you using to bring it to life right now?

Administrators and Teachers: Getting Profitably in Print 75% of the Time

Administrators and Teachers: Getting Profitably in Print 75% of the Time

Why would school administrators and teachers write articles and books unless they had at least a 75% probability of getting their words profitably in print? In fact, professional writers expect to do that almost every time they write, and to know that before they even do the research, interviewing, or whatever is needed to create the valuable text that others want and need. So why don’t we have a professional writer (as well as a publisher with 30 years of experience) simply explain the process, step by step, that puts superintendents, principals, teachers, and other education leaders on the profitable, winning path from the outset? That’s the purpose of Gordon Burgett’s Administrators and Teachers: Getting Profitably in Print 75% of the Time. It’s a no-nonsense godsend for article writing for magazines, newsletters, newspapers, and journals or for books written for their education colleagues (or any other niche market). How can we believe the author sharing this “inside” process? Gordon has 38 published books and 1,700+ articles in print, the most recent being the industry standard, Niche Publishing: Publish Profitably Every Time. He recently also wrote Writer’s Digest’s Sell and Resell Your Magazine Articles. As important, he is the editor and publisher of four popular education books: What Every Superintendent and Principal Needs to Know, The Perfect School, Teachers Change Lives 24/7, and Finding Middle Ground in K-12 Education: Balancing Best Practices and the Law. A how-to success guide for writing and publishing in the education field sounds like a teacher and administrator’s dream!
